- 2:32Speaker 2: welcome to the show now, Michael Masteller. Good morning, sir,
- 2:36Speaker 2: welcome to the show.
- 2:38Speaker 5: Good morning. Thank you for having me, Dave.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. All right, there's been a
- 2:42Speaker 2: lot of talk. You know, obviously, the two things that
- 2:45Speaker 2: have dominated conversations well up until the flood, of course,
- 2:49Speaker 2: the two things that's really dominated conversations here has been
- 2:53Speaker 2: data centers and also flock cameras. And I know you've
- 2:57Speaker 2: been very opinionated on both and it's fine, and I
- 3:01Speaker 2: do want to say full disclosure you are a candidate
- 3:04Speaker 2: for a House of Delegates.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Uh.
- 3:06Speaker 2: We'll get to that a little bit later on. But
- 3:07Speaker 2: you really hear more as a concerned citizen than what
- 3:09Speaker 2: you are as a candidate.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Uh.
- 3:11Speaker 2: So let's start with the data center. You've been to
- 3:13Speaker 2: all the meetings this proposed Google data center for Buffalo
- 3:17Speaker 2: and Putnam County. What can you tell us, what's the latest?
- 3:20Speaker 2: What are you hearing out there?
- 3:22Speaker 5: So the latest is that I actually went up and
- 3:25Speaker 5: drove to the data center that the that the Putnam
- 3:29Speaker 5: County Commission said that they drove to up in Ohio,
- 3:33Speaker 5: the one that they said was going to be more
- 3:36Speaker 5: like the one that was going in down here. And
- 3:40Speaker 5: I did one thing that they didn't do. I went
- 3:42Speaker 5: around and talked to neighbors and none of them liked it. Now,
- 3:48Speaker 5: they were in an electricity co op, so they were
- 3:51Speaker 5: lucky that their bill hadn't gone up, but anyone who
- 3:54Speaker 5: was not an electricity co op their bills electric bills
- 3:58Speaker 5: had doubled. Another thing was that the lady is an
- 4:04Speaker 5: older couple that lived right across the street from the
- 4:08Speaker 5: data center, and she was telling me that if they
- 4:12Speaker 5: needed to go to the restroom at night, they didn't
- 4:15Speaker 5: have to turn on any light inside their house, I mean,
- 4:20Speaker 5: because the whole inside their house was lit up like
- 4:23Speaker 5: it was daylight, so they could navigate their house without
- 4:26Speaker 5: even turning on a single indoor light.
- 4:31Speaker 2: This was a new Albany, right Was this a new
- 4:33Speaker 2: albody on high which is outside Columbus? Is that right?
- 4:36Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 4:36Speaker 2: Okay, go ahead.
- 4:38Speaker 5: So if they talk about noise abate or not not
- 4:44Speaker 5: noise abatement, but light abatement, that is still going to reflect,
- 4:51Speaker 5: you know, from their reflectors back down to the ground,
- 4:54Speaker 5: back into people's houses. And then as far as noise abatement,
- 5:00Speaker 5: I don't think that people are picking up on how
- 5:03Speaker 5: important the infra us sound is. The part that we
- 5:07Speaker 5: can't hear. That's the deeper that's below a deep rumble,
- 5:11Speaker 5: and that's what causes the physiological issues. So to be fair,
- 5:15Speaker 5: when I went to that data center, there was no shrill,
- 5:19Speaker 5: loud sound to be heard. But I only made it
- 5:24Speaker 5: to the gate, and I was several hundred yards away
- 5:28Speaker 5: from any operational buildings, and I could hear and feel
- 5:33Speaker 5: a deep rumble from the gate. And I didn't have
- 5:39Speaker 5: any date or I didn't have any sensors to record
- 5:43Speaker 5: with so I couldn't get any data, but I just
- 5:46Speaker 5: wonder what the infra sound would be on a facility
- 5:51Speaker 5: like that, because that's what gives the physiological effects on
- 5:57Speaker 5: the human body, and that includes the heart. They're studying
- 6:03Speaker 5: the effects on the brain, and there's a lady right
- 6:06Speaker 5: now studying the effects on fetuses in the world.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Is this data center, Michael, that you looked at in
- 6:15Speaker 2: New Albany, Ohio, which again is outside in the general
- 6:18Speaker 2: Columbus area, is it comparable to the one that they're
- 6:21Speaker 2: proposing in Putnam County, the Google Data Center. Are they comparable?
- 6:24Speaker 5: Size?
- 6:24Speaker 2: Comparable? I mean, how do the two compare to each other?
- 6:26Speaker 2: As far as you.
- 6:27Speaker 5: Know, according to the County Commission, they are very comparable
- 6:33Speaker 5: to each other because they both were well, the one
- 6:37Speaker 5: that's in New Albany runs under one gigawack capacity, the
- 6:43Speaker 5: County Commission. They claim that the one's going in at
- 6:46Speaker 5: Buffalo is going to be running at just under one
- 6:49Speaker 5: gigawack capacity, and so they they've been told and they've
- 6:55Speaker 5: been repeating that it's very similar to the one that's
- 7:00Speaker 5: going to be coming in down here at Buffalo.
- 7:04Speaker 2: We're talking to Michael Mosstettler again nine to fourteen The
- 7:07Speaker 2: Dave Island Show on five, Adeline Brown to impired by
- 7:10Speaker 2: the Charleston Dirty Birds. Of course, the Birds are going
- 7:11Speaker 2: to make up a they're actually playing to tonight. The
- 7:14Speaker 2: game on Tuesday because of the stormy weather had to
- 7:16Speaker 2: be postponed, and they're making that one up this evening
- 7:19Speaker 2: and then they'll go on with their regularly scheduled game
- 7:21Speaker 2: against Gastonia. After that. It is one dollar beer night
- 7:24Speaker 2: a Gomark Ballpark, one dollar beers as the Bird salute
- 7:26Speaker 2: the healthcare workers at CAMC. Check out Dirty Birds Baseball
- 7:29Speaker 2: dot com if you need more information about that. So,
- 7:32Speaker 2: what what would your message be to citizens? Michael So,
- 7:37Speaker 2: now that you have visited what you say is a
- 7:39Speaker 2: comparable facility in New Alberdy, Ohio to the one that's
- 7:41Speaker 2: being proposed in Putnam County, what would your message be
- 7:46Speaker 2: to the residents of Putnam County? And more importantly, to
- 7:49Speaker 2: the people that want that we're really pushing for the
- 7:53Speaker 2: Data center, County Commission and whatever Putnam County. What would
- 7:55Speaker 2: your message be to them? Then we'll move on.
- 7:58Speaker 5: I think that we need more ratorium until we can
- 8:01Speaker 5: find out more about what the effects of this data
- 8:04Speaker 5: center are going to be in the buff in the
- 8:07Speaker 5: Buffalo area and as well as Mason.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Okay, so here just a moratoriment so we can find
- 8:13Speaker 2: out more. Which so that's what you're asking for, that's
- 8:16Speaker 2: what you think should happen, right, Yes, yes, okay. I
- 8:20Speaker 2: want to ask you about Flock cameras because you've been
- 8:22Speaker 2: kind of vocal about this as well, and of course
- 8:24Speaker 2: this has been the topic du jour of the last
- 8:27Speaker 2: week or so the Huntington City Council last week, you know,
- 8:30Speaker 2: they had that Marathon City Council meeting that went to
- 8:33Speaker 2: four a m. On last week. And I interviewed the
- 8:37Speaker 2: Putnam County Sheriff, Bobby Egleton on Metro News Midday and
- 8:40Speaker 2: he said, basically put out a statement everybody saw it
- 8:43Speaker 2: on social media basically saying that Putnam County had entered
- 8:45Speaker 2: into an agreement with the Flock camera company. But he
- 8:48Speaker 2: was asking for us to just kind of be put
- 8:50Speaker 2: on hold for right now.
- 8:52Speaker 5: Your thoughts, Well, the sheriff either doesn't understand the tech
- 9:00Speaker 5: technology that he just deployed or he liked because once
- 9:05Speaker 5: those things are mounted on the polls, they are operational,
- 9:09Speaker 5: and that means that any federal agency can get that data.
- 9:14Speaker 5: They can any hacker can get that data. And so
- 9:20Speaker 5: it's yeah, they're online and transmitting as soon as they
- 9:23Speaker 5: are up. And I went to one and you didn't
- 9:29Speaker 5: even have to use a special lens. Every time a
- 9:32Speaker 5: car passed. You could see the flicker of the infrared
- 9:36Speaker 5: light every time that that a vehicle passed. So that
- 9:39Speaker 5: was the it's the alp R, the automatic license plate rear,
- 9:45Speaker 5: and that was that part of it. Uh. These things
- 9:48Speaker 5: also have facial recognition. It's not something that that flocked
- 9:54Speaker 5: likes to talk about, but it can identify people. I mean,
- 9:59Speaker 5: I've got several pages of notes of bugs that have
- 10:05Speaker 5: been found in the system, but I'll get into that
- 10:09Speaker 5: here later. I just think that, I mean, at what
- 10:13Speaker 5: point do we sacrifice enough of our secure, yeah, security
- 10:21Speaker 5: to lose our liberty? Because those who sacrifice a little
- 10:25Speaker 5: security to gain a little bit of temporary safety will
- 10:30Speaker 5: lose both.
- 10:31Speaker 2: But isn't it true though, that with these cameras, just
- 10:34Speaker 2: like with any other piece of technology, they can do
- 10:36Speaker 2: as much or as little as you want. I mean,
- 10:38Speaker 2: they don't all do facial I mean, if I'm wrong,
- 10:41Speaker 2: you correct me. They don't all do facial recognition. They don't.
- 10:45Speaker 2: You could have them on you can buy the deluxe model,
- 10:47Speaker 2: or you can buy the base model for lack of
- 10:49Speaker 2: a better term. Isn't that the way that these things work.
- 10:52Speaker 5: Well? Kind of? So the base model, it still collects
- 10:58Speaker 5: data that goes to the They go to the nationwide
- 11:03Speaker 5: the actually could be worldwide database. And so the police
- 11:08Speaker 5: department or the county commission, they didn't buy these cameras,
- 11:12Speaker 5: they're leasing them. And since they signed the contract, even
- 11:17Speaker 5: if they wanted to take them down, Let's say that
- 11:20Speaker 5: sheriff able someone around and just took them down. That's
- 11:24Speaker 5: what happened in Denver, Colorado, because the people kept being
- 11:29Speaker 5: misidentified or license plates kept being misidentified, and so people
- 11:35Speaker 5: were being charged for things that they didn't do. And
- 11:38Speaker 5: then the city had to pay out a lot of
- 11:41Speaker 5: money in lawsuits for wrongfully arresting people. And so they
- 11:47Speaker 5: realized that it just wasn't worth the hassle. So mid
- 11:51Speaker 5: contract they went to get rid of these things, and
- 11:54Speaker 5: so they took them down. This was in Denver. Flock
- 12:01Speaker 5: forced them to put them back up. Actually, Flock came
- 12:05Speaker 5: out and put them back up themselves. Because they were
- 12:09Speaker 5: made contracts.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Okay, all right, so what would you like to see?
- 12:14Speaker 2: I'll ask you some question. You ask about the data
- 12:16Speaker 2: center of those I ask about the data says, what
- 12:18Speaker 2: do you want to see happening with the flock cameras?
- 12:21Speaker 5: What I would like to see happened with flock cameras
- 12:24Speaker 5: because it's they're not for safety. They they feed into
- 12:28Speaker 5: an AI system that then and we all know that
- 12:32Speaker 5: AI produces flop results. So I would like to see
- 12:38Speaker 5: to see those those flock cameras go away if they
- 12:43Speaker 5: want to put in regular traffic cameras where they're not
- 12:48Speaker 5: trying to fight crime with them. Because one thing that's
- 12:52Speaker 5: that's for sure is that Flock makes these claims where
- 13:01Speaker 5: they say, you know, well, they claim that ten percent
- 13:05Speaker 5: of all crown in America is solved using their services.
- 13:09Speaker 5: The source of that number was created by Flock safety
- 13:12Speaker 5: employees and it doesn't outline regional analysis, So basically the
- 13:19Speaker 5: numbers are cooked. And so I'd rather see something that
- 13:25Speaker 5: only our local officials can see, something that you know,
- 13:31Speaker 5: the federal agencies can't get into very easily, and something
- 13:38Speaker 5: that can't be hacked as easily as flocked flock cameras.
- 13:44Speaker 5: There's a button on the side of these and you
- 13:47Speaker 5: just push them a certain amount of time and you
- 13:50Speaker 5: have root access to the device, which that's like giving
- 13:55Speaker 5: the keys to your car to someone.
- 13:57Speaker 2: All right, Michael, Unfortunately we got to wrap it up there.
- 13:59Speaker 2: I do appreciate you join us and appreciate your concerns.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Thanks a lot. We'll talk soon.
- 14:04Speaker 5: Hi, Thanks Dave, Michael.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Masteller, and again I will mention this he reached out
- 14:09Speaker 2: to come on to talk about those two subjects. He

- 14:17Speaker 2: He didn't really he didn't really come on to as
- 14:19Speaker 2: a candidate. Came on more as a concerned citizen out

- 14:43Speaker 2: You've seen all he's seeing all of our coverage, Brian

- 14:53Speaker 2: here eleven eleven, Virginia, Stree Niece and Charleston seven am

- 18:46Speaker 2: Subcommittee of city councils.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Is that right? Yes, sir?
- 18:48Speaker 9: All right?
- 18:48Speaker 2: And what you been working on here late? Because I
- 18:50Speaker 2: know there was some talk at the city council media
- 18:52Speaker 2: the other night.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Yeah, we just passed.
- 18:56Speaker 11: In order for the east end to help the re
- 19:00Speaker 11: It's a certain like an area in near Washington Street
- 19:02Speaker 11: that needed to be redone like for a business and residential.
- 19:05Speaker 3: So we passed the past the ordinance.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Okay, and this was in what Washington Street.
- 19:10Speaker 11: Yeah, Washington Street eat, so on the east end. So
- 19:12Speaker 11: it's like near I can say Sharp Shopping goes out
- 19:15Speaker 11: to the name of it is a.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Farmor Awa near parm More that area over there.
- 19:18Speaker 11: Now, this it had went back in from two thousand
- 19:21Speaker 11: and five, so I guess it's been in process and
- 19:22Speaker 11: we just brought it back up. And there was there's
- 19:25Speaker 11: a few vacant vacant spots and a few homes they
- 19:27Speaker 11: want to try to reinov well, I guess redo and
- 19:30Speaker 11: also like at a businesses of that way.
- 19:32Speaker 2: You know, it is interesting when you talk about these
- 19:35Speaker 2: different sides of Charleston because and it's true of any
- 19:38Speaker 2: city councilman, is there are it seems like one area,
- 19:41Speaker 2: this area is really growing in this area is not,
- 19:43Speaker 2: and it changes. Oh yeah, and there's been so much
- 19:46Speaker 2: development on in Elk City the west end, you know,
- 19:50Speaker 2: for I mean the last couple of years, business after
- 19:52Speaker 2: business from restaurants and on down uh either opening, relocating
- 19:56Speaker 2: and and not as much on the East End. That's
- 19:59Speaker 2: not a slight thing some people on the East End
- 20:00Speaker 2: of Charleston because this time ten years it could be
- 20:02Speaker 2: the other way around.
- 20:03Speaker 1: You know.
- 20:04Speaker 11: Well it's first, you know, first east End had got
- 20:06Speaker 11: the you know, the East and Neighbor to Side Association.
- 20:09Speaker 11: East End had got the first big redo. Then it
- 20:13Speaker 11: went to the west side. Will now starting on the
- 20:15Speaker 11: far east of the west Side and hopefully it eventually
- 20:17Speaker 11: goes down towards the farther end of the west Side,
- 20:19Speaker 11: the end of Washington Street.
- 20:20Speaker 3: So we're trying to work on that too.
- 20:22Speaker 2: What about the community involvement there on the east Side
- 20:25Speaker 2: that you're talking about now, I mean, because that's very important.
- 20:27Speaker 11: Yeah, there's some people in the East End and they
- 20:29Speaker 11: have a great neighborhood association. So the East End really
- 20:31Speaker 11: has been trying you know, well they've been have been
- 20:34Speaker 11: doing a great job of you know, redivitizing the neighborhood.
- 20:37Speaker 11: And you know, just because Easton is so historical, especially
- 20:39Speaker 11: over there because it's near Roosevelt, so that whole area
- 20:43Speaker 11: down the side of Washington from Virginia, but the other side,
- 20:45Speaker 11: going towards like the Interstate, that side.
- 20:48Speaker 2: It is I mean there's some of the architecture there
- 20:50Speaker 2: in the buildings and the residences is just unmatched. I
- 20:53Speaker 2: mean that's one of the and when people come to
- 20:55Speaker 2: Charleston from out of town. You know, I've heard I've
- 20:58Speaker 2: talked to people and said, man, they're on the way
- 21:00Speaker 2: to the capital and they'll say, man, I drove by
- 21:02Speaker 2: those old homes on the East End and those those
- 21:05Speaker 2: are great, and they really are. They look fantastic and
- 21:09Speaker 2: east then it's a great place to live.
- 21:10Speaker 11: Like you said, you're right right by the Interstate, right
- 21:13Speaker 11: by the Capitol, the Boulevard and right close to downtown too.
- 21:16Speaker 11: So and like you said, the historical factor of it.
- 21:18Speaker 2: All, what is it that you'd like to see in
- 21:20Speaker 2: that area, Like you.
- 21:21Speaker 11: Said, like this, my thing is like we're trying to
- 21:25Speaker 11: gain families and people and businesses into the city. So
- 21:28Speaker 11: this is the a uptick because what happens is that
- 21:30Speaker 11: people we bring in. It affects our schools, it affects
- 21:33Speaker 11: our community, It affects the numbers that we have with
- 21:35Speaker 11: people because like right now, we're in the process of
- 21:38Speaker 11: decline and so people are losing jobs, school systems, you know,
- 21:42Speaker 11: schools are closing. So the more people that we get
- 21:45Speaker 11: into the city that help build the city back up
- 21:47Speaker 11: and help you know, just just be I want to
- 21:50Speaker 11: see it this be flourishing again. I mean we're flourishing now,
- 21:52Speaker 11: but like to see it like you know, and I'm
- 21:53Speaker 11: not that old, but like just twenty years ago when
- 21:56Speaker 11: I was in high school, thirty years ago, to see
- 21:58Speaker 11: this that go back to that little.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Bit, yeah, I mean, and and that's an issue of
- 22:02Speaker 2: all of West Virginia, I mean, except for maybe the
- 22:05Speaker 2: eastern Panhandle, Morgantown area, Potdham County those areas or continuing
- 22:09Speaker 2: to grow with the rest of it. Uh needs to
- 22:10Speaker 2: do a little catching up. So how do you sell
- 22:12Speaker 2: this to people, Larry? I mean, yeah, how do you
- 22:15Speaker 2: sell this to people to say you we want you
- 22:18Speaker 2: as an individual, we want you as a family to
- 22:20Speaker 2: move to Charleston. How do you sell it?
- 22:21Speaker 11: Well, you come here, man, Like you said, Man, it's
- 22:24Speaker 11: great people, great place. We have a lot of like
- 22:28Speaker 11: natural resources here and just it's a great spot to
- 22:31Speaker 11: raise a family. Man, and you you will come here,
- 22:33Speaker 11: and you know, we get a bad deal until you
- 22:35Speaker 11: come for yourself. But bust Virginia is a great place.
- 22:36Speaker 11: I mean, we have a great city, the people in
- 22:38Speaker 11: the city. I love Charleston and West Virginia. Man, we
- 22:41Speaker 11: have great, great individuals that we're here to help. You'll
- 22:44Speaker 11: people here lend lend you the last dollar if they needed,
- 22:47Speaker 11: you know, and just to come here and you can
- 22:50Speaker 11: be a part of something like you'll be. It's like
- 22:53Speaker 11: a family. You're a community bus a family.
- 22:54Speaker 2: To talk to Larry Moore again, who's a Charleston City
- 22:58Speaker 2: Council in ward for what exactly? Areas are a ward force?
- 23:01Speaker 11: Okay, wardforce on the West side of Charleston and that
- 23:03Speaker 11: runs from like Park Avenue to part of the west
- 23:06Speaker 11: side of hill Over to like Little Page close throughout
- 23:09Speaker 11: twenty one.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Okay, why did you decide to run for office? To
- 23:12Speaker 2: begin with? I mean I had you, you were appointed, right, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 23:17Speaker 2: so but but you had to run.
- 23:18Speaker 3: You had to run again. So I'll give you the
- 23:20Speaker 3: whole story.
- 23:20Speaker 11: So my friend, my childhood friend, Tificany Wesley Pire was
- 23:25Speaker 11: the councilwoman at the time, but she had to take
- 23:27Speaker 11: a job and she couldn't do it anymore. Yeah, and
- 23:31Speaker 11: she came to me and she was like, would you
- 23:33Speaker 11: think about it? And I was like, I was like, nah,
- 23:36Speaker 11: it's not my thing. And then she just talked me
- 23:38Speaker 11: into it and she was like I know that you would.
- 23:40Speaker 11: You will do the right thing by people, and you
- 23:42Speaker 11: gonna you'll be good. So then I did it. I
- 23:44Speaker 11: finished out her term. So then I had to run again,
- 23:47Speaker 11: and for a second, I was like, I don't know
- 23:50Speaker 11: if I want to run again, And then I thought
- 23:51Speaker 11: about it. Then the things that you were able to do,
- 23:54Speaker 11: people you get to meet, and the things that I mean,
- 23:56Speaker 11: I've been able to do a lot since I've been here,
- 23:58Speaker 11: and uh, And I was like, man, people kind of
- 24:00Speaker 11: like depend on me, and not just on the West side,
- 24:03Speaker 11: just in the city of Charleston. I'll be able to
- 24:04Speaker 11: helping a lot of people. So then I went ahead
- 24:06Speaker 11: and I ran again. And it's and it's been a
- 24:08Speaker 11: great thing.
- 24:09Speaker 2: What's been the highlight you been on your time on
- 24:13Speaker 2: city Council? And what were what were some things that
- 24:15Speaker 2: maybe surprised you when you got there, maybe you weren't
- 24:17Speaker 2: ready for.
- 24:18Speaker 11: Like my very very first day, like when I got appointed,
- 24:22Speaker 11: I had they were doing about a neighborhood, and they
- 24:27Speaker 11: were talking about putting a cup I guess a brewery
- 24:29Speaker 11: in the end of the street in North Charleston. And
- 24:32Speaker 11: I was like, yo, and I just like and I
- 24:33Speaker 11: was explaining that my cousin's on that street. I'm like,
- 24:35Speaker 11: that's not a That street is not like a spot
- 24:38Speaker 11: where it's tight. It's right by the rec center too,
- 24:41Speaker 11: And I was like, whoa, you know, cause I didn't
- 24:42Speaker 11: really have no you know. I just came into it,
- 24:44Speaker 11: like my day and I just read over that same day,
- 24:45Speaker 11: I read over the order upsode. I'm my gosh, So
- 24:49Speaker 11: the declaration, I would say, and I read it and
- 24:51Speaker 11: I was like, well, you know in that one and
- 24:53Speaker 11: I can say, man, I got a few things. Man,
- 24:57Speaker 11: I can say North Charleston Rec Center getting the football
- 25:00Speaker 11: feel getting turf. That was a great thing to be
- 25:02Speaker 11: a part of. Then the Breen Street Basketball Courts, Works
- 25:07Speaker 11: Avenue Neighborhood Center. I was a part of that because
- 25:09Speaker 11: I was over at Parkston Wreck at the time when
- 25:11Speaker 11: they did that, and that's and if you go for
- 25:14Speaker 11: the bike races and you could see that the whole
- 25:17Speaker 11: playground area over there, it's beautiful and Works Avenue, so
- 25:20Speaker 11: that and just man, a lot of things just being
- 25:22Speaker 11: a part of I mean, I'm the send there thinking.
- 25:24Speaker 3: Man, it's a lot of stuff I've been a part of.
- 25:25Speaker 3: It's been great. Man.
- 25:26Speaker 2: I mean you you strike me as a kind of
- 25:29Speaker 2: guid I've known you for a few years now that
- 25:31Speaker 2: we're good and you've done it. You'll do some sort
- 25:33Speaker 2: of public service, you know, and you're in education. You
- 25:35Speaker 2: help a lot with the kids. Will talk about that
- 25:37Speaker 2: a little bit, but I think I think you were
- 25:40Speaker 2: probably called to do this. You know, this is kind
- 25:41Speaker 2: of your thing is to help people.
- 25:42Speaker 3: Man.
- 25:43Speaker 11: Yeah, I think so too, because like I said, I'm
- 25:45Speaker 11: part to keep your faith. So we have already been.
- 25:47Speaker 11: I've always been in the community doing things. I mean,
- 25:50Speaker 11: me and my partner of Derrel like I mean, we
- 25:51Speaker 11: were started out. We were mentoring kids at glenn Wood
- 25:54Speaker 11: and Chandler Elementary School, so we started out from then.
- 25:56Speaker 11: So and everybody always get on me for this because
- 25:59Speaker 11: I don't really talk about stuff that I do, and
- 26:01Speaker 11: I just kind of just do it. And I know
- 26:03Speaker 11: people say I need to get better at it, but
- 26:04Speaker 11: I just know and I always just do the work.
- 26:06Speaker 3: And you do the work at shows. Yeah, and when
- 26:08Speaker 3: you work, people see what you do.
- 26:09Speaker 11: You don't have to always beat your chest because if
- 26:12Speaker 11: you're doing it for chest beating, that's the wrong reason
- 26:14Speaker 11: to do it.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Talking to Larry More again is the city councilor out
- 26:17Speaker 2: of Ward four in Charleston. I invite you to join
- 26:19Speaker 2: me tomorrow morning, every Friday morning nine oh six or
- 26:21Speaker 2: the Adopt Me Please Pet of the Week from the
- 26:23Speaker 2: Cadaal Charleston You Main Association brought to you might almost
- 26:25Speaker 2: have an interiors family owned proudly serving the community for
- 26:28Speaker 2: over fifty years, specialized in custom blinds, shades, shutters of
- 26:31Speaker 2: polsterry and beautifully crafted sown goods, homes to hospitals, classrooms,
- 26:34Speaker 2: commercial spaces. They could do it all. Located at five
- 26:37Speaker 2: sixteen D Street in South Charleston. I would be remiss
- 26:39Speaker 2: if I didn't if I brought you on the show
- 26:41Speaker 2: and didn't ask you about what else you're doing, even
- 26:43Speaker 2: outside city Council, because you you were in the office
- 26:46Speaker 2: a couple of weeks ago. I think you went on
- 26:47Speaker 2: Woodies show. Yeah yeah, and we got into a conversation
- 26:51Speaker 2: out in the hallway with the with the with Jared
- 26:53Speaker 2: and with Bobby Sprian. We were out there just talking
- 26:55Speaker 2: about somebody. I got tired listening to you. And I
- 26:58Speaker 2: know you said you're not one wants to thump your chest,
- 27:01Speaker 2: and I completely I completely understand. But you're always doing something.
- 27:04Speaker 11: Yeah yeah, because I'm on a couple of boards committees.
- 27:06Speaker 11: So we had a football camp too, well, my fraternity did.
- 27:09Speaker 11: We had a Virginia State University. That was a great thing.
- 27:11Speaker 11: You'll make us. I five Attorney Incorporated. We had a
- 27:14Speaker 11: football camp, which is a free football camp.
- 27:16Speaker 3: We do that.
- 27:17Speaker 11: I also I am involved with I got a camp.
- 27:22Speaker 11: It's a stem camp called Camp Invention, and I'm partnering
- 27:25Speaker 11: with step by Step and we're gonna do it with
- 27:27Speaker 11: them this and starts Monday. I wish I had more time,
- 27:30Speaker 11: but the camp starts Monday. It's a great STEM camp.
- 27:32Speaker 11: I did it last year with the Median Center and
- 27:34Speaker 11: it's a great camp. I mean, kids learned Stam. They
- 27:37Speaker 11: come and they go to classes, and we have teachers
- 27:40Speaker 11: and we have like the local high school kids that
- 27:41Speaker 11: come and help out to with the camp.
- 27:43Speaker 3: And it's a great thing.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Now for those who maybe are a little bit younger
- 27:47Speaker 2: like me, uh and don't understand completely Stam. What when
- 27:50Speaker 2: you talk about Stam, explain what that is.
- 27:51Speaker 11: It's like science and yeah, technology science. Yeah, so again
- 27:55Speaker 11: and they build. You'll build stuff and you'll they have
- 27:58Speaker 11: a kit sent to them and they the classes and
- 28:00Speaker 11: it's I mean, it's it's crazy, man. They like I mean,
- 28:04Speaker 11: if I could, I wish I had like the all
- 28:06Speaker 11: the stuff that I could pull out back and yeah,
- 28:08Speaker 11: but it's like I mean, it's it's Yeah, they do
- 28:10Speaker 11: a whole week as classes. So you'll go in each
- 28:13Speaker 11: each thing, you'll have like the teachers, each like teacher,
- 28:16Speaker 11: well person teaching the class will have a kid and
- 28:18Speaker 11: you'll build stuff and you'll do it.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Yeah, so, uh, you're also, of course a big part
- 28:23Speaker 2: of Capitol High School.
- 28:24Speaker 3: Yeah right, yes, Sarah, Yes, Sarah.
- 28:26Speaker 2: A smile on your face talk about Capitol No.
- 28:28Speaker 11: I mean, you know, I you know, I love Capital man,
- 28:30Speaker 11: were you know? And it's because it's a great place.
- 28:33Speaker 11: Great school, man, great school, wonderful school.
- 28:35Speaker 2: When school start for Kampa, kids go back to nineteenth
- 28:39Speaker 2: of August. Yes, when does the staff go back a
- 28:41Speaker 2: week or so before that?
- 28:42Speaker 11: Yeah, August eleventh they come back to before it back
- 28:44Speaker 11: all right?
- 28:45Speaker 2: And and your role at Capitol High School is assistant principal.
- 28:47Speaker 2: All right, how's that been?
- 28:48Speaker 3: It's been. It's been cool, man, it's been.
- 28:50Speaker 2: I would think that when I if I were in
- 28:52Speaker 2: school to know that I had you make them calling
- 28:54Speaker 2: it are you mister more than.
- 28:55Speaker 3: Mister mister Moore coach hill So.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Coach, because I would think that have somebody like you
- 29:00Speaker 2: as a assistant principal would have been pretty cool.
- 29:03Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, it's it's it's been fun. My first start,
- 29:09Speaker 11: I first, my first vice principal type of tenure was
- 29:12Speaker 11: at South Charleston Middle School and I did that for
- 29:14Speaker 11: semester and that was that was real real, that was
- 29:17Speaker 11: like the cool experience in the Capitol High job opened up,
- 29:20Speaker 11: then I took the Capitol High job.
- 29:21Speaker 2: What is it about Capitol High, in your opinion, makes
- 29:23Speaker 2: such a special place.
- 29:24Speaker 11: Man Like, it's the real world man, Capitol High. Like
- 29:29Speaker 11: the slogan to Capitalize. Everybody someway to Capitol High. But
- 29:32Speaker 11: Capitol High is embodies the city of Charleston pretty much
- 29:34Speaker 11: like you have every fast of life there and then
- 29:38Speaker 11: the staff they care about the kids, ma'am. Because like
- 29:42Speaker 11: Capitol High gets for the for the world of me,
- 29:45Speaker 11: it has such a bad rep and people have never
- 29:47Speaker 11: been to Capitol High. I have never set food in
- 29:49Speaker 11: Capital High. Have his persona of Capitol High. It is
- 29:52Speaker 11: not true. And you think you can't get education at
- 29:54Speaker 11: Capital I mean we have people that are doctors, lawyers,
- 29:56Speaker 11: delicate's special, they're city council people. We have people that
- 29:59Speaker 11: do everything from Capitol High School. And it's just that
- 30:01Speaker 11: I and I don't know why that we have to
- 30:04Speaker 11: fight the stigma man like, people like I want to
- 30:06Speaker 11: make kid the Capitol because I can't.
- 30:07Speaker 3: Yes, you can, you can.
- 30:09Speaker 11: And it's the thing about Capital man like, you can
- 30:12Speaker 11: go there and you I'm telling you get your top
- 30:14Speaker 11: notch education, and you can be whatever you want to
- 30:16Speaker 11: be from Capital.
- 30:16Speaker 2: We've got too many success stories out of Capitol High
- 30:19Speaker 2: School for people that have gone on to much bigger
- 30:21Speaker 2: and better things for me to believe that it's not
- 30:24Speaker 2: that good. It's not a good place.
- 30:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:26Speaker 11: And I mean, like, you know, I went to the
- 30:27Speaker 11: Capital High School. I graduated in ninety seven, and and
- 30:29Speaker 11: people and I let people talk sometimes and they'll be like, oh,
- 30:32Speaker 11: you work at Capitol High And I'm like, so tell
- 30:35Speaker 11: me a boy Capital and they will be like, well
- 30:37Speaker 11: I heard I'm saying, man, that's a lie. And a
- 30:39Speaker 11: lot of times, you know, it's like I don't know why,
- 30:41Speaker 11: and just like is this the it's like the hardest
- 30:44Speaker 11: thing to get off when we're doing a good job.
- 30:45Speaker 11: And John Henderson up here are principal. He's a wonderful man.
- 30:48Speaker 11: He's doing a good job and bringing the school back
- 30:50Speaker 11: and getting us back to the top or well a
- 30:52Speaker 11: reputation back up where it needs to be.
- 30:54Speaker 2: All right, I want to I want to ask you
- 30:55Speaker 2: this question. I brought you on to talk about City
- 30:57Speaker 2: Council and we're going to the thousands. I do want
- 31:00Speaker 2: I want, I do want to say though about if
- 31:02Speaker 2: you could give a message to parents right now, whether
- 31:05Speaker 2: it's Capital High or wherever the kids are going to
- 31:07Speaker 2: school right now, is in a couple of weeks we
- 31:10Speaker 2: get ready to send the kids back to school, what
- 31:12Speaker 2: would the message for parents be for any school?

- 35:57Speaker 2: We're heading the parking lot tomorrow morning, eleven eleven, Virginia, sure, Charleston,
- 36:00Speaker 2: seven until six pm as we are going to try
- 36:03Speaker 2: to help out some folks in north central West Virginia.
- 36:05Speaker 2: And I'll tell you any everybody within the sign of
- 36:08Speaker 2: my voice has undergone flooding, you know, at one point
- 36:11Speaker 2: or another. But the pictures and the people that I
- 36:15Speaker 2: talked to both on and off air. Joe Kincer, the
- 36:19Speaker 2: old buddy of mine from my hometown who have livesim
- 36:21Speaker 2: Buchannan right now, you know, he and his family were
- 36:24Speaker 2: trapped in their house from the time the storm really
- 36:26Speaker 2: hit up there, which is about five thirty or six
- 36:28Speaker 2: on Tuesday afternoon, until they spent basically twenty of them
- 36:31Speaker 2: then their neighbors twenty four hours in their house. I've
- 36:35Speaker 2: seen lots of bits and pieces on the social media
- 36:38Speaker 2: of folks who were marooned at one place or another
- 36:41Speaker 2: and just had to spend the night in their car,
- 36:44Speaker 2: hanging out at this convenience store of that gas station
- 36:46Speaker 2: on Buckhannon Island. And here's what we want people to
- 36:49Speaker 2: understand too, is that I mean, and I'm not trying
- 36:52Speaker 2: to be morbid here, but we don't know the extent
- 36:56Speaker 2: of everything yet because there are areas that they couldn't
- 36:58Speaker 2: get to. There were literally people in trees yesterday and
- 37:02Speaker 2: the day before. Governor Morrissey is set to have a
- 37:05Speaker 2: press event at about ten o'clock this morning, and he's
- 37:07Speaker 2: supposed to have more information about that, because everybody's saying,
- 37:11Speaker 2: we're their fatalities at We don't know that was I
- 37:15Speaker 2: was on the area. You have to We didn't know
- 37:17Speaker 2: because and the governor may or may not have some
- 37:19Speaker 2: sort I don't know. He has a press event I
- 37:21Speaker 2: think sketched for ten this morning. We don't know what's
- 37:23Speaker 2: going to come out of that. Of course we'll be
- 37:24Speaker 2: covering it, uh but and I just don't know, and
- 37:28Speaker 2: let the news people and the first responders cover it. Please, yes,
- 37:32Speaker 2: don't be one of those lookie loues. Well I want
- 37:34Speaker 2: to drive up and see what's going on up there.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Please don't, please don't. Please just stay out of the
- 37:38Speaker 2: way and let us do the thing we are trained
- 37:41Speaker 2: to do that in ways that stay out of the
- 37:44Speaker 2: rescue efforts. All right, Tomorrow morning seven am till six
- 37:48Speaker 2: pm tomorrow evening on our parking not eleven eleven Virginia
- 37:50Speaker 2: Streetd's and Charleston. We will be collecting various things to
- 37:55Speaker 2: be given to the flood victims in north central West Virginia.
- 37:58Speaker 2: What are we looking for? So it's an emergent and
- 38:00Speaker 2: see flood relief drop. If you have experienced some of
- 38:03Speaker 2: the flooding, you know some of the things we are seeking.
- 38:06Speaker 2: Think five gallon resealable buckets, because we can fill those
- 38:09Speaker 2: with the various cleaning supplies and baby wipes and bottled
- 38:13Speaker 2: water and some non perishable snacks. Those are the sorts
- 38:17Speaker 2: of things baby supplies, diapers and such that we can
- 38:22Speaker 2: get folks either up and running or we can replenish
- 38:25Speaker 2: the stocks that they have already used to take care
- 38:28Speaker 2: of folks over the past couple of days. We're going
- 38:31Speaker 2: eight until six tomorrow here. I'm sorry, that's one of
- 38:35Speaker 2: the one of the changes that so we're having some
- 38:40Speaker 2: we're having some many hands make light work and the
- 38:42Speaker 2: West Virginia Association Affairs and Festivals is going to join
- 38:45Speaker 2: us with the collecting and the loading, and so we're
- 38:48Speaker 2: going to go eight until six tomorrow eleven eleven, Virginia
- 38:51Speaker 2: Street East. Plug that into your GPS. If you're not
- 38:53Speaker 2: one of those folks, if you're a if you're a
- 38:55Speaker 2: landmark kind of person and street names, use the Leonsulli
- 38:59Speaker 2: an exit. Take it to Virginia Street. Hang a left
- 39:02Speaker 2: at first pres that's the only way you should turn
- 39:05Speaker 2: onto Virginia Street. They should be in the keyword at
- 39:09Speaker 2: least once a week. Somebody's going the wrong way and
- 39:12Speaker 2: we'll be right there on your right. It is a
- 39:14Speaker 2: loop through our parking lot. You do not have to
- 39:16Speaker 2: get out of your nice, comfortable vehicle to make this donation.
- 39:20Speaker 2: We will have people to do that. We will load
- 39:22Speaker 2: it up eventually. Tightened Roofing is going to do the
- 39:25Speaker 2: transport and the distribution, so they are statewide. They are
- 39:29Speaker 2: helping with other efforts from WVRC media stations throughout the
- 39:33Speaker 2: state in order to contribute to this. So we've got
- 39:36Speaker 2: everything covered, but the stuff. You bring it to us
- 39:40Speaker 2: tomorrow eight until six, eleven eleven, Virginia. We're not looking
- 39:43Speaker 2: for clothes or anything like that. That's a big thing
- 39:46Speaker 2: we appreciate. We're kind of specific on what we need.
- 39:49Speaker 2: Bottles of water, cleaning supplies. You said, those buckets are great,
- 39:53Speaker 2: you know, because we can put stuff in those buckets.
- 39:56Speaker 12: Yes.
- 39:57Speaker 2: In fact, the last time we did a flood relief drop,
- 40:00Speaker 2: we based it on the buckets so that we could
- 40:03Speaker 2: we could create kits as we go. We ended up
- 40:06Speaker 2: with four stories high of those buckets. I would love, love,
- 40:10Speaker 2: love to have more and more of those to pass along.
- 40:14Speaker 2: But we appreciate the thought. When it comes to things
- 40:17Speaker 2: like clothes and bedding, we really do, and there are
- 40:21Speaker 2: other places that can use those right now. But anything
- 40:24Speaker 2: soft fibered is not going to be helpful right now.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Anything that's going to absorb water is not going to
- 40:30Speaker 2: be helpful. We need waterproof things. We need things we
- 40:32Speaker 2: can clean up, personal hygiene items so folks can get
- 40:35Speaker 2: themselves cleaned up. That's our focus tomorrow. And cash is king,
- 40:40Speaker 2: if you like to say, we can take cash and
- 40:42Speaker 2: we can take checks, and doing a little bit differently
- 40:44Speaker 2: this time. I understand we're working with the Red Cross
- 40:47Speaker 2: on this, so American Red Cross, American Red Cross. And
- 40:49Speaker 2: in that memo line, if you're a check writer, in
- 40:51Speaker 2: that memo line, you put West Virginia flood Relief. Yes,
- 40:53Speaker 2: that way it's already earmarked to go to the right
- 40:56Speaker 2: place and again, American Red Cross is a statewide, region wide,
- 41:00Speaker 2: nationwide organization so that you can on all of the
- 41:06Speaker 2: charity watchdogs. You can see where money goes and those
- 41:09Speaker 2: sorts of things. I know that we have already had
- 41:12Speaker 2: some of our partners step up to start writing checks
- 41:17Speaker 2: for themselves and lay down some challenges. Yeah, I want
- 41:20Speaker 2: to thank you for bringing that up, Harvey Peyton of
- 41:23Speaker 2: the Peyton Law Firm. Of course he does ask the
- 41:25Speaker 2: lawyer here Tom every Thursday morning at a twenty on
- 41:29Speaker 2: the air. Today, I was upstairs my office listening Harvey
- 41:33Speaker 2: pledging five hundred dollars on behalf of his law firm.
- 41:36Speaker 2: And so basically what he's doing is he's trying to
- 41:39Speaker 2: get other attorneys to pledge five hundred dollars if he
- 41:42Speaker 2: can get as if I understand it's correctly, if he
- 41:45Speaker 2: could get three others besides him to donate five hundred
- 41:49Speaker 2: dollars apiece, then he says he'll kick in another five
- 41:52Speaker 2: hundred dollars. And we are always grateful for Harvey joining
- 41:58Speaker 2: in these things, helping our friends and neighbors. He's always
- 42:01Speaker 2: one of the first ones to. When one of these
- 42:03Speaker 2: drop things happens, he will walk in start waving to check,
- 42:06Speaker 2: all right, who I make this thing out to? And
- 42:09Speaker 2: I love that he is challenging other folks. You know,
- 42:11Speaker 2: I don't know if he named any names. I mean,
- 42:14Speaker 2: we did, did he? I say, I wouldn't want to
- 42:15Speaker 2: start randomly throwing out names like JB Acres and den Selango.
- 42:19Speaker 2: He did exactly that. That's exactly the two he mentioned.
- 42:22Speaker 2: Y You know, I wouldn't want to, Actually I would.
- 42:25Speaker 2: I would be more likely to mention her honor Acres
- 42:29Speaker 2: because I would imagine she makes all the adjudications in
- 42:33Speaker 2: that particular household. No offense to JB. But I think
- 42:37Speaker 2: we all know who wears the robe in that relationship.
- 42:40Speaker 9: I mean that.
- 42:40Speaker 2: I mean that in the best way as somebody who's
- 42:42Speaker 2: been well, somebody who's over to let's put it all right,
- 42:46Speaker 2: eight am till six pm tomorrow on our parking. That
- 42:48Speaker 2: weather is going to be great. Yes, So we've done
- 42:51Speaker 2: this on all kinds of weather, from snow to these
- 42:54Speaker 2: similar things, snow to rain to but not going to
- 42:57Speaker 2: be too hot. Brian Hustay's Weather's God Goldilocks Day. It's
- 43:00Speaker 2: a perfect Day. Chamber of Commerce Day eight am six
- 43:03Speaker 2: pm on our parking lot Tomorrow eleven eleven, Virginia Treats
- 43:06Speaker 2: in Charleston and Rob, thank you for helping out with
- 43:09Speaker 2: this and all the all the ones that you've done
- 43:11Speaker 2: in the past, and we appreciate it.
- 43:12Speaker 5: Man.
- 43:13Speaker 2: We created this method, this drop hierarchy, this this structure
- 43:19Speaker 2: so that when the emergency happens that we can Okay,
- 43:22Speaker 2: we need to do a drop. Let's do it on Friday.
- 43:25Speaker 2: Got everything lined up and ready to go, so we
- 43:27Speaker 2: have the QR codes and stuff like that. I don't
- 43:30Speaker 2: have the answer that I know that the American Red
- 43:32Speaker 2: Cross will absolutely positively have a link. I think that
- 43:36Speaker 2: may already exist. I have not seen it, so I
- 43:40Speaker 2: will confirm, but I think and on social media as well.
- 43:43Speaker 2: All right, it was time to start putting some No, actually,
- 43:47Speaker 2: you've got an event tonight. I do. In fact, I
- 43:49Speaker 2: am willing to get the jump on this. If you
- 43:52Speaker 2: are a if you are a Putnam County person or
- 43:54Speaker 2: as I'm told the local say, a Putnam County person.
- 43:58Speaker 2: And I'm going to be at Valley and Hurricane. It's
- 44:01Speaker 2: rodeo night for the night market. So truck Norris, which
- 44:04Speaker 2: is what we call the vehicle for ninety six to
- 44:06Speaker 2: one k wus. We will be there this evening. If
- 44:10Speaker 2: you're like, I can't make it during the day tomorrow,
- 44:12Speaker 2: but I got stuffs. Bring it to me and I
- 44:15Speaker 2: can bring it back, so we can kind of get
- 44:16Speaker 2: a jump on things tonight at Valley Park and Hurricane
- 44:19Speaker 2: and this is part of the Night Market series and
- 44:22Speaker 2: we team up with them, you know, about once a
- 44:23Speaker 2: month or so to get to go there for these things.
- 44:25Speaker 2: And it's rodeo night. Tan't you you wearing the cowboy
- 44:27Speaker 2: hat and the whole deal, the cowboy hat, the boots
- 44:30Speaker 2: and the holster and everything. No, that's it, cowboy, No, No,
- 44:35Speaker 2: nobody wants to see that. Ain't nobody wants again?
- 44:38Speaker 3: All right?
- 44:38Speaker 2: Again? All right, So you'll be there tonight in Valley
- 44:41Speaker 2: Park for that and again starting at six. Yeah, I think, yeah,
- 44:45Speaker 2: I think it's six to nine tonight, six to nine.
- 44:47Speaker 2: It's free music. You'll be able to buy dinner while
- 44:49Speaker 2: you're there. There's plenty of shopping and lots of shenanigans
- 44:52Speaker 2: to be had. And so if you want to, if you,
- 44:54Speaker 2: like Rob said, if you can't make it to Charleston tomorrow.
- 44:56Speaker 2: Come out to Valley Park and see him tonight. He's
- 44:58Speaker 2: not hard to find. With truck Norris the tenth I
- 45:01Speaker 2: stand out. I mean, I'm I'm almost six to two
- 45:03Speaker 2: and about two twenty two twenty one. Whatever it takes,
- 45:07Speaker 2: I stick out in the crowd all right and on
