- 0:00Matthew chapter 14, Let's pray. Heavenly Father, we love you, we
- 0:08love you, Lord Jesus, we love everything about you.
- 0:11Lord, teach us your ways today. We sit at your feet today.
- 0:15We are your disciples, Father. Let us produce fruit, Lord.
- 0:20Let us produce a harvest, Father, in the name of Jesus, I
- 0:24pray that we'll be your workers, Lord, that we'll get out of our
- 0:29own way. We'll get out of our own minds,
- 0:31God, and we will put our hands to the plow.
- 0:34We'll lock eyes with you. We'll be found.
- 0:37Faithful God to you, Lord, I pray in the name of Jesus, you
- 0:41supernaturally fill us and fuel us.
- 0:44Holy Spirit, teach us your ways today.
- 0:47We love you, Lord Jesus. It's all about you, Lord Jesus,
- 0:51and it's in your name we pray. Amen.
- 0:55Start in verse one. At that time Herod the Tetrarch
- 1:01heard of the fame of Jesus. Who is this Herod the Tetrarch?
- 1:04History has a lot to say about these characters.
- 1:08Here history proves the Bible. Friends.
- 1:11This is Herod who was ruler over 4 parts, but actually there were
- 1:17only three. It was just a name that was
- 1:19given. The tetrarch means 4 parts 2.
- 1:23And he said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist, He has
- 1:26risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works he does
- 1:29show forth themselves in him. So here his guilty conscience,
- 1:34which Matthew's going to tell us all about.
- 1:36But Herod's guilty conscience was eating at him. 3 For Herod
- 1:42had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for
- 1:46Herodias's sake, his brother Philip's wife.
- 1:49So here Matthew was so slick in how he portrays this whole scene
- 1:56here, and you can actually see these are accurate historical
- 2:01figures that lived and they are proven by sources outside of the
- 2:09Bible. And I want you to know
- 2:11something, friends, that the Bible is an accurate source to
- 2:18go by. And all the miracles, The
- 2:20Walking on the water, the coins in the fish's mouth, the rolling
- 2:25of the stone, it's all proved to be true, friends.
- 2:30The great flood, the Egyptian, the Israelites coming out of
- 2:36Egypt, All of it, friends, is true.
- 2:39And it's real and we can trust it.
- 2:43And here, Matthew being the tax collector, being the detail
- 2:48oriented person that he would have to be to hold that office,
- 2:52he's showing you that there is trustworthy evidence of all of
- 2:58these things that he is showing us.
- 3:01You can put your faith in it, friends.
- 3:03You're not going to be duped by believing every single word in
- 3:08the Bible, no matter what the world says.
- 3:13So here you can see this character, Herodias.
- 3:17She was a a true historical figure and she was the
- 3:28granddaughter of Caesar Augustus.
- 3:32And you can see Herod, his brother Philip, and they, Philip
- 3:37would have been Herodias's uncle and she was married to him.
- 3:41And this was all they kept it in the family here.
- 3:45And John the Baptist knew that Herod the Tetrarch taking her as
- 3:53his wife was wrong and that it was going to bring about the
- 3:59judgment of God upon the Jews in that land.
- 4:02And he was calling it out. And perhaps he didn't just call
- 4:05it out once. Perhaps he made a campaign of it
- 4:09and it bothered Herodias so much.
- 4:12And Matthew's going to tell us what happened, John for 4/4.
- 4:17John said unto him, It is not lawful for you to have her five.
- 4:23And when he would have put him to death, he feared the
- 4:26multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
- 4:29So here Herod feared man more than he feared God, and a lot of
- 4:34us get into trouble with the fear of man.
- 4:37We fear what men would say about us more than we fear what this
- 4:41good book that we hold in our hands has to say. 6:00 But when
- 4:47Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced
- 4:51before them and pleased Herod. This was a very promiscuous
- 4:57dance. This is what you still see in
- 5:01your culture of mothers who they have some kind of sick pleasure
- 5:09in seeing their daughters grow up too fast and they don't teach
- 5:13modesty and purity, and they are dressing their daughters in
- 5:20despicable garb and manner and hear Herodias in the nature of
- 5:28our human, our fallen human nature.
- 5:30She has put her daughter to dancing in front of her stepdad
- 5:41and he had guests there and it pleased him so much, this
- 5:47despicable dance that her mother has put her up to.
- 5:51Let's see what he has to say. 7 Whereupon he promised with an
- 5:57oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.
- 6:00So he made this promise in front of all of his dinner guests, and
- 6:05I'm sure they were debaucherous in their drink with alcohol.
- 6:13And he had promised her anything she asked for, and Herodias had
- 6:18put her up to it. And let's see what she asks for
- 6:25A and she being before instructed of her mother said
- 6:30give me here John the Baptist's head in a charger.
- 6:34This was premeditated friends. You can see the debased levels
- 6:43that this woman had gone to. She was kept up at night by her
- 6:47conscience and you can see it has eaten away.
- 6:52It's much like Jezebel. It's much like whenever she was
- 6:58in charge of Ahab. You can see it here how she has
- 7:03charge of Herod, and you can see it all playing out here.
- 7:07And she's using her young teenage daughter to win over the
- 7:12favor of her drunken stepfather. And he could have said
- 7:17absolutely not, but he feared being made a fool in front of
- 7:21these men, his guests, his dinner guests, that he gave in
- 7:26to the sick, monstrous request of this young teenage daughter
- 7:39of Herodias 9. And the King was sorry,
- 7:44nevertheless, for the oath's sake, and them that sat with him
- 7:49at dinner, he commanded it to be given to her.
- 7:54This would have been, and is, one of the most demonstrous
- 8:02attacks on the faith that could ever be thought of.
- 8:06John the Baptist had done nothing wrong.
- 8:10He had run the race well, and here, because he had called them
- 8:16out on their sin, he was murdered. 10 And he sent and
- 8:22beheaded John in the prison. 11 And his head was brought in a
- 8:25charger and given to the damsel, and she brought it to her
- 8:28mother. You know, all of this is being
- 8:31played out in a sick and twisted way, but it is reality and it is
- 8:36what is actually what has happened in history, and it is
- 8:40proven here. 12 And his disciples came and took up the
- 8:44body and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
- 8:47So the disciples went and tried to give him a proper burial.
- 8:51But just remember that the blood of the martyr is the seed of the
- 8:55gospel. 13 And when Jesus heard of it, he departed there by ship
- 9:01into a desert place apart. And when the people had heard
- 9:06thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.
- 9:10Jesus was desirous to get alone with the Father.
- 9:13Jesus often withdrew to desolate places.
- 9:16He heard of this, his cousin being murdered, brutally
- 9:21beheaded and brought about and paraded and showcased in a
- 9:25charger which would have been a plate and his head's on the
- 9:32plate. And the daughters giving this
- 9:34gruesome scene being painted out for us on the pages and Jesus
- 9:41his desires to go and be alone with the Father.
- 9:44And here comes the multitudes out. 14 And when Jesus went
- 9:50forth and saw a great multitude, he was moved with compassion
- 9:54towards them, and he healed their sick.
- 9:57Imagine that Jesus desires to be alone with the Father, but he
- 10:02gives in and has compassion. He's moved in his innermost
- 10:06being. He's moved in the deepest parts
- 10:08of himself, and he heals and he gives.
- 10:11Even whenever he's troubled, He gives.
- 10:14And he's still interceding on your behalf, friend.
- 10:17He's never, you are never a problem for Jesus.
- 10:25I want you to know that Jesus is never annoyed with you, Fran.
- 10:33You're never just a distraction to Jesus.
- 10:36He never just wants to move through with whatever it your
- 10:40request is so he can get on to the next thing.
- 10:44Jesus is intentional with us. Jesus takes time with us.
- 10:47Jesus cares about everything. He was moved with compassion.
- 10:51He healed their sick. Imagine that friends.
- 10:56Imagine how Jesus, we're not a disruption to Jesus.
- 11:03We're the thing. We're the main thing at that
- 11:05time for Jesus. 15 And when it was evening, his disciples came
- 11:13to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now
- 11:17passed. Send the multitude away, that
- 11:19they may go into the villages and buy themselves food. 16 But
- 11:25Jesus said unto them, They do not need to depart.
- 11:29You give them something to eat. Jesus told Peter, If you love
- 11:39me, you'll feed my sheep. He's telling the disciples here,
- 11:44He's saying, no, they do not need to leave.
- 11:48And he's testing their faith here.
- 11:51He's showing them that he is God.
- 11:54You know, they had not yet come to that epiphany.
- 11:58They had not yet come to the reality that he was omnipotent
- 12:04and can do anything. He's telling them they don't
- 12:08need to depart. He's about to.
- 12:11He's about to bring forth a miracle.
- 12:13And if they could call back the time of the wedding whenever he
- 12:18turned the water into wine, they would know that he is able to do
- 12:23anything. And their first request should
- 12:27have been, Lord, what do you want us to do?
- 12:31These people are here and they've been here for a while
- 12:34and they're getting hungry. What do you want us to do?
- 12:37Should have been their first response, not send them away.
- 12:42And that is what it looks like when we don't see people as a
- 12:48distraction, when we see them as the main thing that we're going
- 12:52to do for that period of time is to engage with these people and
- 12:56share with them the love of Jesus.
- 12:59That's the main thing, friends, sharing the love of Jesus.
- 13:02Love your neighbor as yourself, and love the Lord thy God with
- 13:07all your heart. They don't need to depart.
- 13:11You give them something to eat. What a charge for us as
- 13:14believers. They do not need to depart.
- 13:16Don't send them away. You ask the Lord God to provide
- 13:20for them and let it flow through you his hands and feet. 17 And
- 13:25they say unto him, We have here but 5 loaves and two fishes.
- 13:30He said Bring them here to me. Bring the little bit that you
- 13:34have. Don't discount the little bit.
- 13:36Don't think that it doesn't matter.
- 13:38Every little bit counts and God can multiply it.
- 13:41Praise God. 19 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the
- 13:48grass, and he took the five loaves and the two fish, and
- 13:51looking up to heaven he blessed and he broke.
- 13:53And he gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to
- 13:57the multitude. Here is a great banquet.
- 14:00He tells everybody this is a celebratory time.
- 14:03Sit down, let's dine and Sup together.
- 14:06And it's no different today, friends.
- 14:07God is still doing miracles. He can make the bread truck
- 14:11breakdown in front of the orphanage.
- 14:13He can back that up with the milk truck right afterwards and
- 14:17the orphans get fed and we get fed.
- 14:19Friends, praise God, Hallelujah how He brings about our feeding.
- 14:25He is Our Daily Bread. He is the bread of life.
- 14:29He is the wine. He is the bread broken for us.
- 14:34He is the living water. Praise God, Hallelujah there is
- 14:38no lack in His house. Friends, don't waste what He
- 14:41gives you. Don't discount the small things,
- 14:45bring them here to me, he says. Sit down on the grass. 20 And
- 14:50they did eat all and were filled.
- 14:56Everybody ate, they were filled and they took up the fragments
- 15:02that remained 12 baskets full. So not only did the little boy
- 15:08get back what he gave, but he gave he got back more.
- 15:13And that's what happens in the Lord's house.
- 15:15The little bit that you get somehow God in his God math, God
- 15:20is able to give you back even more than what you give.
- 15:24Friends, do not forget this biblical principle.
- 15:28It is seen right here in the pages of Matthew chapter 14.
- 15:33You can see how there was much leftover and all the little boy
- 15:39had to do is bring it to the Master. 21 And they that had
- 15:44eaten were about 5000 men. Besides the women and children.
- 15:49Perhaps 15,000 people were fed that day and it would have
- 15:53looked like Jesus was amassing this army to overthrow the Roman
- 15:57government. 22 Straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get
- 16:04into the ship and to go before him unto the other side, while
- 16:09he sent the multitudes away. So there was some urgency here,
- 16:16and Jesus says, go, go, go, go, go.
- 16:19There is an urgent sending away of the disciples.
- 16:22These people would have wanted to make Jesus the king.
- 16:26They would have tried to King Jesus right then and there and
- 16:30it wasn't his time, and it would have he knew it was going to
- 16:33come a different way, that he did not come to overthrow the
- 16:37Roman government in the way that they wanted him to or expected
- 16:41him to. He came to be the Savior of the
- 16:43world. He is coming back friends.
- 16:47The second time He's not coming back.
- 16:49Meek as a lamb led to the slaughter.
- 16:51He's coming back with fire in his eyes.
- 16:54He's coming back with A2 edged sword out of his mouth.
- 16:57He's coming back the way that they wanted him to at this time.
- 17:00But it wasn't his time. And he told the disciples, go,
- 17:03go, go, go, go, go out of here. And what happens next?
- 17:10He sent the multitudes away, 23 And when he had sent the
- 17:17multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray, and
- 17:22when the evening was come, he was there alone.
- 17:24So he got what he wanted. If you remember, before the
- 17:27multitudes came, he was trying to get a loan, 24 But the ship
- 17:33was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with the waves, for the
- 17:36wind was contrary. 25 And in the 4th watch of the night, Jesus
- 17:41went unto them, walking on the sea.
- 17:43This was literal, friends. This is not figurative.
- 17:46This is not allegorical. This is literal, Friends, Jesus
- 17:49walking on the water. It's probably around 3:00 in the
- 17:53morning. Between 3:00 and 6:00 in the
- 17:55morning, Jesus is walking on the water.
- 17:58There is a great sea. There's a great storm on the
- 18:01sea, tossing this boat to and fro, and here comes Jesus. 26
- 18:07When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were
- 18:11troubled, saying It is a spirit, and they cried out for fear.
- 18:14They thought it was a ghost. 27 But straightway Jesus spoke unto
- 18:19them, saying, Be of good cheer it is.
- 18:21I be not afraid. That's what he says to you,
- 18:23friend. Don't be afraid. 28 Peters
- 18:28answered him and said, Lord, if it be you, bid me to come unto
- 18:33you under the water. This is him calling out to the
- 18:35King. 29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out
- 18:40of the ship, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.
- 18:43So two people have walked on water before, Friends. 30 But
- 18:47when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid, and beginning to
- 18:50sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. 31 And immediately
- 18:54Jesus stretched forth his hand, and he called him, and he said,
- 18:57Oh, you of little faith, why did you doubt?
- 19:01And when they were come unto the ship, the wind ceased.
- 19:04And when they were in the ship, come and worship him, and
- 19:06saying, Of a truth, you are the Son of God. 34 And they were
- 19:11gone over. They came into the land of
- 19:13Geneser. And when the men of that place
- 19:16had knowledge of him, they sent out into all the country
- 19:19roundabout, and brought unto him all that were diseased.
- 19:22And they besought him that they might only touch the hem of his
- 19:26garment. And as many as touched were made
- 19:28perfectly whole. Goodness gracious, we've covered
- 19:32a lot of ground there. Peter fell because he was
- 19:37duplicious in his mind. He was not locked eyes with
- 19:42Jesus. And you can see just touching
- 19:44the hem of His garment, you can see the miracle of making it
- 19:47over to the side in moments. Notice there's so much here in
- 19:52this chapter and it has been preached on so many times, but
- 19:56just know that we need to keep our eyes on Jesus and we will
- 20:00not sink. That is the premise here.
- 20:05Jesus says don't be afraid, don't doubt.
- 20:09O you of little faith, increase your faith, friends, raise the
- 20:14faith over your head. Your head's going to tell you
- 20:17that there are so many things that we need to.
- 20:22Think about your head's going to tell you that the reality is
- 20:25everything that you can see and taste and smell and hear and the
- 20:28reality is all around you, the physical world.
- 20:31But Jesus speaks a better word. He says don't doubt owe you a
- 20:36little faith, increase your faith.
- 20:39Know that he can do anything. Know that he is the God of ages.
- 20:45Know that He is able and He is willing and believe with all
- 20:49your heart. Believe with all your mind that
- 20:52God can do anything, that Jesus is God.
- 20:56Believe with all your heart and mind that the Holy Spirit lives
- 21:00inside of you. Believe with all your heart and
- 21:02mind that everything is going exactly according to plan.
- 21:07Let's get out of the boat friends, and walk on the water
- 21:09with Him today. I hope you've been blessed by
- 21:12this chapter. I know I sure have.
- 21:14I'm praying for every single one of you.
- 21:20I love you. We'll see you back here
- 21:26tomorrow. God bless you.
