- 0:01Speaker 1: Chapter ten of Raymond Louell, first Missionary to the Moslems,
- 0:03Speaker 1: by Samuel's Wemer. This LibriVox recording is in the public domain.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Chapter ten. Who being dead yet speaketh, He who loves
- 0:12Speaker 1: not lives not, He who lives by the life cannot die.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Raymond Loull one step farther but some slight response from
- 0:20Speaker 1: his church or his age, and Raymond Louell would have
- 0:22Speaker 1: anticipated William Carey by exactly seven centuries. George Smith Neander
- 0:29Speaker 1: does not hesitate to compare Raymond Lowell with Anselm, whom
- 0:32Speaker 1: he resembled in possessing the three full talents uncommon among
- 0:35Speaker 1: men and so seldom found in one character, namely a
- 0:39Speaker 1: powerful intellect, a loving heart, and efficiency in practical things.
- 0:44Speaker 1: If we acknowledge that Lowell possessed these three divine gifts,
- 0:47Speaker 1: we at once place him at the front as a
- 0:49Speaker 1: true type of what a missionary to Moslems should be today.
- 0:52Speaker 1: He whom Helferic calls the most remarkable figure of the
- 0:55Speaker 1: Middle Ages, being dead yet speaketh. The task which he
- 0:58Speaker 1: first undertook is still being for the church unaccomplished. The
- 1:01Speaker 1: modern missionary to Islam can see a reflection of his
- 1:04Speaker 1: own trials of faith, difficulties, temptations, hopes, and aspirations. In
- 1:08Speaker 1: the story of Lul, only with his spirit of self
- 1:11Speaker 1: sacrifice and enthusiasm can one gird for the consult with
- 1:13Speaker 1: this goliath of the Philistines, who, for thirteenth centuries has
- 1:17Speaker 1: defied the armies of the Living God. Loul's writings contained
- 1:21Speaker 1: glorious watchwords for the spiritual crusading against Islam in the
- 1:24Speaker 1: twentieth century. How up to date is this prayer which
- 1:27Speaker 1: we find at the close of one of his books.
- 1:30Speaker 1: The Lord of Heaven, Father of all times, when thou
- 1:32Speaker 1: didst send thy son to take upon him human nature,
- 1:35Speaker 1: he and his apostles lived an outward peace with Jews, Pharisees,
- 1:39Speaker 1: and other men. For never by outward of violence did
- 1:41Speaker 1: they capture or slay any of the unbelievers or of
- 1:44Speaker 1: those who persecuted them. Of this outward peace, they availed
- 1:48Speaker 1: themselves to bring the erring to the knowledge of the
- 1:50Speaker 1: truth and to a communion of spirit with themselves. And
- 1:54Speaker 1: so after thy example should Christians conduct themselves toward Moslems.
- 1:58Speaker 1: But since that ardor of devotion which glows in apostles
- 2:00Speaker 1: and holy men of old, no longer inspires us love
- 2:03Speaker 1: and devotion through almost all the world have grown cold,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and therefore do Christians expend their efforts far more in
- 2:09Speaker 1: the outward than in the spiritual conflict. England's war in
- 2:12Speaker 1: the Sudan cost more in men and money a hundred
- 2:14Speaker 1: times and all missions to Moslems in the past century.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Yet the foremore is only to put down a Moslem
- 2:19Speaker 1: usurped by fire and sword. The latter represents the effort
- 2:23Speaker 1: of christenem to convert over two hundred millions of those
- 2:26Speaker 1: who are in the darkness of Islam. There was a
- 2:29Speaker 1: thousandfold more enthusiasm in the dark ages to rest an
- 2:32Speaker 1: empty sepulcher from the Saracens than in our day to
- 2:34Speaker 1: bring them the knowledge of a living savior. Six hundred
- 2:38Speaker 1: years after Raymond Lowell, we are still playing at missions
- 2:40Speaker 1: as far as Mohammedanism is concerned. For there are more
- 2:43Speaker 1: mosques in Jerusalem than there are missionaries in all Arabia,
- 2:47Speaker 1: and more millions of Moslems unreached in China than the
- 2:49Speaker 1: number of missionary societies that work for Moslems in the
- 2:51Speaker 1: whole world. In North Africa, where low witness to the truth,
- 2:56Speaker 1: missions to Moslems were not begun again until eighteen eighty four.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Now there is again daybreak in Morocco, Tripoli, Tunis, Algiers
- 3:04Speaker 1: and Egypt. Yet how feeble are the efforts in all
- 3:07Speaker 1: Moslem lands compared with the glorious opportunities, How vast does
- 3:10Speaker 1: the work still be forests six hundred years after lull.
- 3:14Speaker 1: According to recent and exhaustive statistics, the population of the
- 3:17Speaker 1: Mohammedan world is placed at two hundred fifty nine million,
- 3:20Speaker 1: six hundred eighty thousand, six hundred seventy two. Of these,
- 3:24Speaker 1: eleven million, five hundred fifteen thousand, four hundred two are
- 3:27Speaker 1: in Europe, one hundred and seventy one million, two hundred
- 3:29Speaker 1: and seventy eight thousand and eight are in Asia, nineteen thousand,
- 3:32Speaker 1: four hundred and forty six are in Australia, seventy six million,
- 3:36Speaker 1: eight hundred eighteen thousand, two hundred and fifty three are
- 3:38Speaker 1: in Africa, and forty nine thousand, five hundred sixty three
- 3:42Speaker 1: are in North and South America. Three percent of Europe's
- 3:45Speaker 1: population is Moslem, Asia has eighteen percent in Africa. Thirty
- 3:49Speaker 1: seven percent. Out of every one hundred souls in the world,
- 3:52Speaker 1: sixteen are followers of Mohammed. Islam's power extends in many lands,
- 3:57Speaker 1: from Canton to Sierra Leone and from Zanzaba to the
- 4:00Speaker 1: Caspian Sea. Islam is growing today even faster in some
- 4:04Speaker 1: lands than it did in the days of Loll, and
- 4:06Speaker 1: yet in other lands, such as European Turkey, Caucasia, Syria,
- 4:11Speaker 1: Palestine and Turkestan, the number of Moslems is decreasing. In
- 4:15Speaker 1: Lul's day, the empire of Moslem faith in Moslim politics
- 4:18Speaker 1: nearly coincided. Nowhere was there real liberty, and all the
- 4:22Speaker 1: doors of access seemed barred. Now five sixths of the
- 4:26Speaker 1: Moslem world are accessible to foreigners and missionaries, but not
- 4:29Speaker 1: one sixtieth has ever been occupied by missions. There are
- 4:32Speaker 1: no missions to the Moslems of all Afghanistan, Western Turkestan,
- 4:35Speaker 1: Western Central and Southern Arabia, Southern Persia, and vast regions
- 4:38Speaker 1: of North central Africa. Mission statistics of direct work from
- 4:42Speaker 1: Moslems are an apology for apathy rather than an index
- 4:45Speaker 1: of enterprise. The Church forgot its heritage of Lull's great
- 4:48Speaker 1: example and was ages behind time to Persia one thousand
- 4:52Speaker 1: years after Islam, the first missionary came Arabia waited twelve
- 4:56Speaker 1: centuries in China, Islam has eleven hundred years to start.
- 5:00Speaker 1: This neglect appears the more inexcusable if we consider the
- 5:03Speaker 1: great opportunities of today. More than one hundred and twenty
- 5:06Speaker 1: five million Moslems are now under Christian rulers. The keys
- 5:10Speaker 1: to every gateway in the Massam world are today in
- 5:12Speaker 1: the political grasp of Christian powers, with the exception of
- 5:15Speaker 1: Mecca and Constantinople. Think only for example, of Gibraltar, Algiers, Cairo, Tunis, Khartum, Batum,
- 5:22Speaker 1: Aiden and Muscat, not to speak of India and the
- 5:25Speaker 1: farther east. It is impossible to enforce the laws relating
- 5:29Speaker 1: to renegades from Islam under the flag of the Infidel.
- 5:32Speaker 1: One could almost visit Mecca as easily as loaded Tunis,
- 5:35Speaker 1: where the same spirit of martyrdom alive among us and
- 5:37Speaker 1: inspired the pioneer of Palma. The journey from London to
- 5:40Speaker 1: Baghdad can now be accomplished with less hardship and in
- 5:43Speaker 1: less time than it must have taken lull to go
- 5:45Speaker 1: from Paris to Bougia. How much more promising, too, is
- 5:49Speaker 1: the condition of Islam today. The philosophical disintegration of the
- 5:53Speaker 1: system began very early, but has grown more rapidly in
- 5:56Speaker 1: the past century than in all the twelve that preceded.
- 5:59Speaker 1: This strength of Islam is to sit still, to forbid thought,
- 6:02Speaker 1: to gag reformers, to abominate progress. But the Wahabies drew
- 6:06Speaker 1: a bow at a venture and smote their king between
- 6:08Speaker 1: the joints of the hardness. Their exposure of the unorthodoxy
- 6:12Speaker 1: of Turkish Mohammedanism set all the world thinking Abbat Ulwahab
- 6:16Speaker 1: meant to reform Islam by digging for the original foundations.
- 6:19Speaker 1: The result was that they must now prop up the House.
- 6:22Speaker 1: In India, they are apologizing for Mohammed's morals and subjecting
- 6:25Speaker 1: the Koran to higher criticism. In Egypt, prominent Moslems advocate
- 6:30Speaker 1: abolishing the veil. In Persia, the Bobby movement has undermined
- 6:33Speaker 1: Islam everywhere. In Constantinople, they are trying to put new
- 6:37Speaker 1: wine into the old skins by carefully deluding the wine.
- 6:40Speaker 1: The new Turkish Party is making the rent of the
- 6:42Speaker 1: old garment worse by its patchwork politics. In addition to
- 6:45Speaker 1: all this, the Bible now speaks the languages of Islam
- 6:49Speaker 1: and is everywhere preparing the way for the conquest of
- 6:51Speaker 1: the Cross, even in the Moslem world, and in spite
- 6:54Speaker 1: of all hindrances, it is daybreak everywhere. The great lesson
- 6:58Speaker 1: of Loll's life is that our weapons against Islam should
- 7:00Speaker 1: never be carnal love, and love alone will conquer, but
- 7:04Speaker 1: it must be an all sacrificing and all consuming love,
- 7:08Speaker 1: a love that is faithful and to death take him
- 7:10Speaker 1: all in all, says Noble. Lull's myriad gifts and graces
- 7:14Speaker 1: make him the Evening and the morning star of missions.
- 7:17Speaker 1: He presaged the setting of medieval missions and heralded the
- 7:19Speaker 1: dawn of the Reformation. The story of his life and
- 7:22Speaker 1: labors for Moslems in the dark Ages is the challenge
- 7:25Speaker 1: of faith to us, who live in the light of
- 7:26Speaker 1: the twentieth century, to follow in the footsteps of Raymond
- 7:29Speaker 1: Lull and win the whole Mohammedan world for Christ. End
- 7:33Speaker 1: of chapter eight read by Alathia Karis. End of Raymond Lull,
- 7:37Speaker 1: first missionary to the Moslems by Samuel's Wemer
