- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: Hi folks, welcome to the episode of Film Study.
- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: This is Ken McKewsick and it's time for this week's match-ups episode for the defense here.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_00]: As I'm going to join again this year by Frazier Tafar, my co-host Frazier, how are you doing?
- 0:16[SPEAKER_01]: Here we go, Ken.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_01]: We'll have you back on for another Raven season, a lot of excitement, a lot of new change.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_01]: Really, one of the true unexpected week ones we've had in recent years on what to look for.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_00]: Many we don't know what's going to happen in a lot of ways because the new coaching right yeah completely agree absolutely well let's jump right into it as you know folks we do to each on the on defense and on offense please look for the offensive path that'll be out tomorrow
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: But the defense is here today.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to start with the Raven's defensive line versus the cult's offensive line in the run game.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_00]: Now, little background first, the Ravens really need to contain Jonathan Taylor in this game, the the the cult's top back.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: He's been good after contact at 3.52 yards per carry was fifth the National Football League.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_00]: That's a PFF recording of it.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: There is a lot of differentiation of definition of what contact means.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: that effectively leads you to different yards after contact numbers.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, you look at it.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: Jonathan Taylor's going to be one of the better backs in a league in terms of yards after contact.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_00]: He was 352, Henry was 359 last year.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_00]: 68 miss tackles for some 323 carries is 0.19 per carry.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_00]: Henry was only at 0.14 last year.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_00]: It was the second worst year as career.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: The worst in fact since his rookie year.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: But Taylor, a darn good tackle breaker when he's up there and in Derek Henry territory.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: There are a few guys better.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_00]: Be John Robinson right now really dominating the NFL in that category.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_00]: 4.7 yards per attempt in total for Taylor.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: 1.38 of that is yards before contact.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_00]: That's high, but Henry, for example, is at 161 to give you a relative size.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: Any comments on the backs here before going on with what I think the line needs to do?
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think you make a really good points about Jonathan Taylor.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's probably coming in with a chip on his shoulder this year in terms of people aren't putting him in that hierarchy of Derek Henry's sake on Barclay, B. John Robinson.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_01]: They really, I think he's looking to get to that next paycheck and starting off the year what a bang is probably what he's really focused on the beginning of the year.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_01]: So I think the ribbons are going to be keen to that making sure he's not a focal point of the offense.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, definitely a major weapon that the Colts had both in the run and the past games.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_00]: But let's talk about the run game here, because that's what this particular moment was.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_00]: The Colts led the league in Gap Runs last year and Taylor in particular, a big gap runner in terms of usually gap runners, the big thing they try and do, and this is true of all running backs, but it's more true of gap runners.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_00]: They try and get the level two for first contact, because they tend to be the better tackle breakers, and we've kind of seen that in some of the other numbers.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_00]: The Ravens need to manage space and maintain their gap discipline in this game.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_00]: They do have a size advantage at the line of scrimmage, particularly if they were to put both Jenkins and Jones on the field.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_00]: There should be an interesting option for the Ravens, I think, in this game, to try some one-three Jenkins Jones to try and mitigate that gap, run scheme, so there'll be lots of duo blocking in this game, I expect to see, you know, obviously double teams, they've got a massive right tackle,
- 3:34[SPEAKER_00]: the cold stew and they have a Quentin Nelson at left guard who's a earth mover as well.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_00]: The edge defenders certainly need to keep the place turned to the inside that should be young and Robinson on early downs.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_00]: If we see what we expect to see, I think it'll be Mike Green and Hendrickson on a lot of the passing downs and young and Robinson on early downs.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_01]: We've been on early downs, too.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_01]: On first hands, okay.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we may see a lot of him.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_00]: I hope it's not the kind of where that he went through last year, where he does that.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_00]: And the inside linebackers and Hamilton need to find that first contact in the backfield.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_00]: So that's my summary of that.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_00]: What do you have to say out of those about this?
- 4:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I really agree with you, especially on the inside linebackers.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_01]: I'm looking for Rokuan to have a real active name, making statement early to let us know that, hey, I'm back and really last year was a fluke, maybe a little bit by the defense of coordinator and his guidance, but under just the manner he wants to make a statement via the leader along with Hamilton, who has a...
- 4:34[SPEAKER_01]: Funny tidbit is listed as a DVD, not a safety.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, whatever.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_01]: You missed him as a pineapple.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but it's just looks like he's going to be probably playing a lot more in the box.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_01]: Probably next to Rokuan on Kushu Downs this year.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_01]: Moving on to my next point, I have the Ravens line backers versus the Colts pass attack, specifically looking for Trent and Simpson and Rhoquan to be able to protect that second and third level throw, we have had pass, pro, I mean, I'm sorry, pass defense issues in the previously in terms of
- 5:17[SPEAKER_01]: getting to the spots or giving up those throws those digs over the middle, not being able to be keen on what's behind you.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_01]: And this is a big year for Trent and Simpson.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_01]: And to Teddy Buchanan's ready to go 100% he needs to be able to carry his and the load and really going to be trying to see if he's going to get caught on the play action fake.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: Or is he going to take fall steps
- 5:44[SPEAKER_01]: in the past game, and that's where I'm really focused on is going to be less thinking this year for our linebackers and more reading react that we're used to in the Raven of the Defense.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty darn good year, honestly, for both Trent and Enroquon in coverage last year.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_00]: Enroquon, a lot about seven yards per target plane in the middle of a defense and certainly had some problems.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: And Trenton was good.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: He was under five yards per target last year.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_00]: They both have, they're acquiring not only in that level two level three area, but also to take care of Jonathan Taylor, the receiver.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: And that's that's very important to make shadowing him.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_00]: I think Taylor had over 50 targets last year.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_00]: So they're not shy about using him.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_00]: He should probably get the ball that four times in this game.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: And that rave is easy to be there and ready to stop him.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I think specifically
- 6:35[SPEAKER_01]: going to see how they're going to put two in that middle line backer, are they just going to rotate Simpson and Hamilton in that role or could we see Teddy this week on a limited snack out or also can we see, um,
- 7:00[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I've got my predictions on that.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: No Higgins at all.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't think we'll see the Kennedy there.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think they may just dress three linebackers for the game.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_00]: They may bring up one from the practice squad.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: So we might see the Luca activated for the game potentially.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_00]: But I don't believe that Buchanan's going to play.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's on the roster because he'll return at some point.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't think he's going to start when it gets back.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: I think it'll be Simpson's job to lose.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: Even though we had big hopes,
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: All right, I'll move forward.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: My next one is the Raven's Secondary Versus, the very talented set of Colts Receivers.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_00]: This is a game where I'm not sure if we'll see fix sides from Humphrey and Wiggins because you have some very specific target types.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_00]: And Alec Pierce has been the leagues premier deep throughout the past two years.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: He's at 11.9 yards per target and each of the last two seasons that's phenomenal.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: His success rate, this is an interesting one to watch.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: His success rate is essentially his catch rate.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_00]: Because he is a dot is so deep that every time he makes a catch it's essentially a first down and and obviously then a success
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: He's a fairly even split of left block receiver right wide receiver.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_00]: So you can play that act so you can be over on the right side as well.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: And it may just be a case where they want Wiggins to follow him and kind of try and take away that deep threat on an island.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_00]: And it's it'd be interesting to see if they really think they could do it that way or if they have to rotate safety help to do it.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: But if they could use Wiggins only on pierce that would obviously be a big advantage.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_00]: Josh downs is primary a slot wide receiver.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_00]: He's a tough match up for Hamilton on early downs, but he has size limitations.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: He's only about five nine.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_00]: So either rivers are key out in Morton should be able to contest him very well.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_00]: I think in dime, and the Ravens always seem to do what they can effectively with Hamilton on early downs playing in that slot position.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: Keenan Allen is now 34 years old.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_00]: He was more last year with the chargers,
- 8:59[SPEAKER_00]: a right-wide receiver than a left-wide receiver, and he's a better matchup for Humphrey, honestly.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: So if this could be a game where they really try and just roll with those guys in that way to the extent that those are the two on the field or two of the three on the field, they could do really well with that matchup directly.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_00]: and then war on a very straightforward matchup for Hamilton.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_00]: Good player, but Hamilton is plenty big to cover him.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_00]: When these flux 12 or a two by two or even a three by one wide, I think Hamilton is an excellent matchup for him.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_00]: One of the things I'm a little concerned about is that the Colts may go three by one wide with the one being the tight end warren to effectively take Hamilton
- 9:47[SPEAKER_00]: of the matchup process on the strong side of the field, which by the way, that could be a big advantage for the cults if they're able to do it if they think they can win like that.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I think the receiver I'm really worried about,
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: Could potentially be pierced because of the different linemen that he has across the field, whether it's left or right, he doesn't really have a certain side.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_01]: So like you said, it's going to be hard for either way, specifically I want Wiggins on Alex pierced just in terms of the recovery speed that he brings it in a table, because pierced can be a burner.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_01]: And then we have, of course, like you said, Josh Downs, we're going to look for Martin and Rivers to be able to step up
- 10:39[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see a lot of dime.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, this game.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think it makes all kinds of sense against a team like the cults for a couple of reasons.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_00]: First of all, you still pose the threat of war and unthurt down, and you want to be able to use a dime back, almost in a man coverage role against war.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_00]: But also, you want to get a shiftier slot corner out there to take care of Josh Jones on some potential for his anthros.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I think we'll see.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_00]: what I expect to be the standard this year, which is big nickel on early downs and dime later.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, big nickel up.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_01]: So with that being said, my next matchup is the Ravens Sim and since for situational past rush versus the cold past protection, a big theme that we had last year and really the years past is getting past rush, not just in general, but in the
- 11:38[SPEAKER_01]: Jesse Menter has really emphasized all year is being your best when your best is needed and I think this first game is something we really need to show out of the gate that we can close games close have close quarters and really not have to send the house like we've done with
- 12:01[SPEAKER_01]: uh, Martin uh, sorry, or awake martin down.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, that we have a McHarndale sending the house and getting pressure that way.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think uh, Magnet McDonald and Jesse Minner has shown us that we can use sim pressure in terms of confusing the offensive line and their blocking scheme and sending more than what they have in terms of their slide.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, and I think this colds offensive line is a veteran offensive line, so it could be a little trouble.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_01]: Some
- 12:27[SPEAKER_01]: Jonathan Taylor is really good in past row as well, which really builds what boasts to his greatness as a running back, but really I'm looking for them to bring to skies really looking for those corner blitzes, those slot corner blitzes, Hamilton off the edge.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_01]: uh, sending trend on these uh, just fires own blitzes and really seeing how we can generate more past rush pressure and putting real onus on the offense to be damn near perfect to move the wall down field.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_00]: Definitely a good pass-bocking line.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_00]: One of the best in the NFL that the Colts have, one guy is a little bit weak, potentially, as Jaylin Travis, a rookie last year.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_00]: I had a pretty damn good season, frankly, for a rookie, but he's 6, 7, 6, 8, 3, 40.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_00]: He may have a lot of trouble with the quickness and the bend of a mic green on that right side.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_00]: So that's what I'm really hoping is the good matchup for the Ravens that they're able to exploit.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_00]: All right, always a pleasure talking football with you.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_00]: Frazier will cut it out right here for the defense and we'll come back to the offense tomorrow.
