- 0:00Psalm 12/1 states that help, O Lord, for the godly man ceases
- 0:05to be. That was our text on Father's
- 0:09Day and continues to be our text even today.
- 0:13And my plan is to to finish that outline this morning.
- 0:19We trust that that will happen, but the the verse itself is very
- 0:24convicting. It's very challenging because
- 0:29the living and abiding Word of God applies to every generation,
- 0:37no matter when that generation is.
- 0:40And it is true that that the godly man ceases to be.
- 0:44And so we need to understand what God is looking for when he
- 0:47looks for someone to stand in the gap or someone to intercede
- 0:51for him as he looks for a man to do that kind of thing.
- 0:54And so are are we that kind of man?
- 0:59What does a godly man look like? You see, my greatest concern as
- 1:06a pastor is, is not that you, you fail.
- 1:14My greatest concern is that you will succeed at doing the wrong
- 1:18thing. That's my greatest concern,
- 1:22because fail you will. But that's not my greatest
- 1:25concern. It's that you'll succeed at
- 1:29doing the wrong thing. And there are many people who
- 1:34are successful at doing that which is wrong or that which is
- 1:39not the best. What is best is that you, you be
- 1:44the kind of man that honors and glorifies the name of God so
- 1:48that the godly man is here in his family, in his church, in
- 1:58the workplace. When I was growing up as a as a
- 2:03young man, my father instilled certain principles in me.
- 2:09Those principles have been with me to this day.
- 2:12I hold on to them dearly because it is what led is what led me to
- 2:17where I am even even today at at my age and where I am at Christ
- 2:23Community Church. They were principles that that
- 2:27governed his life and he wanted me to understand them in such a
- 2:33way that I would be able to follow them.
- 2:38So by way of introduction, I'm going to give you those
- 2:40principles. There are six of them.
- 2:42It will lead us into the completion of our outline this
- 2:46morning. He used to always tell me, Son,
- 2:49if if you want to be a a man of God, you must number one, find a
- 2:55glorious church, you must find a glorious church, that is a
- 3:04church that gives glory to God. Ephesians 321 says, let there be
- 3:11glory in the church from generation to generation.
- 3:20But the theme is, let there be glory in the church.
- 3:23In other words, let there be a display of the magnificence of
- 3:26Christ. May Christ always be on display.
- 3:30May may the the majesty and splendor and beauty of God be
- 3:34seen in the church. Let there be glory in the church
- 3:42and in Christ Jesus from generation to generation.
- 3:47The church is to give glory to the Lord.
- 3:50Some people say, well, well, this is a good church, or this
- 3:54church over here is a good church.
- 3:56So a good church can only be a good church if it's a glorious
- 3:59church. How do we know that?
- 4:01Well, in Exodus chapter 34, when when Moses said, Lord, show me
- 4:05your glory, and God said, I can't let you see my glory and
- 4:08live, but I will let all my goodness pass before you, and I
- 4:15will proclaim the name of the Lord.
- 4:18In other words, the goodness of God describes the glory of the
- 4:22Lord. So a good church is a church
- 4:25that gives glory and honor to God, that puts God on display.
- 4:30That's a glorious church. That's a good church.
- 4:33A good church can only be good if it glorifies the name of God.
- 4:39It's so important. John MacArthur, who said that
- 4:45the only reason to choose a church is to choose it based on
- 4:50the preaching of the Word. No other reason.
- 4:54That's a quote. The only reason to choose a
- 4:58church is to choose the church that preaches the word of the
- 5:02living God. There is no other reason to
- 5:05choose the church. Why?
- 5:06Because when you proclaim the name of God, you glorify the
- 5:10person of God. You put him on display.
- 5:14That is so important. And so you preach the word of
- 5:17God. And how do you know?
- 5:18The church preaches the word of God.
- 5:22It practices the word of God. It lives it out.
- 5:28First Timothy 315 says that the church is the pillar and the
- 5:31foundation of the truth. Everything about the church is
- 5:35about the truth of God, nothing else.
- 5:41So how would you know a glorious church?
- 5:44The Bible says in Matthew 4 man should not live by bread alone,
- 5:47but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
- 5:50How do you live each and every day by the word of God that
- 5:55proceeds from the mouth of God? That's it.
- 6:01Psalm 138, verse #2 says thy word, O Lord, is magnified even
- 6:04as thy very name, the word of God, is magnified to a level of
- 6:11the name of God. And one day at the name of
- 6:14Christ, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that
- 6:17Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
- 6:21So how do you know a church is a glorious church if you have to
- 6:25find a glorious church? And this is my, my dad's biggest
- 6:29beef throughout his life. It became my biggest beef as
- 6:35well. How do you know you have found a
- 6:38glorious church? And there are many facets to
- 6:41that. We, we wrote a little booklet
- 6:42called How to Choose a Church and in there are a lot of
- 6:46descriptions on how do you know a church that glorifies and
- 6:50honors the Lord. But let me just give you a
- 6:51couple of things by way of suggestion.
- 6:55Think of it this way. God is is holy, holy, holy.
- 7:05God wants his bride to be holy. When he saves us, he sanctifies
- 7:10us. He sets us apart.
- 7:11That's what it means to be sanctified.
- 7:14We're set apart under God for his purposes.
- 7:17We are, we become holy children of the living God.
- 7:23And so a holy God wants a holy church.
- 7:30A holy God doesn't want an unholy church.
- 7:34He wants a holy church. So how do you get there?
- 7:39You get there by understanding the very first instruction that
- 7:44Jesus gives about the church. If if Jesus gives us
- 7:51instructions about the church and he gives them an order of
- 7:56priority and he gives them as #1, then it should be the number
- 8:01one element in the church itself to know whether that word, that
- 8:06church is preaching the Word and living the Word.
- 8:10And so the very first instruction that Jesus gives
- 8:13about the church is before the church is ever born.
- 8:18The church is born in Acts 2. But before the church is ever
- 8:23born, Jesus says these words. If your brother sins, go and
- 8:32show him his fault in private. If he listens to you, you have
- 8:35won your brother. But if he does not listen to
- 8:39you, take one or two more with you, said by the mouth of two or
- 8:43three witnesses. Every fact may be confirmed.
- 8:46If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church, the
- 8:55church. And if he refuses to listen even
- 8:59to the church, let him be to you as a a Gentile and a tax
- 9:04collector. And truly I say to you that
- 9:06whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever
- 9:09you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
- 9:11And again I say to you that if 2 of you agree on earth about
- 9:14anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by my
- 9:17Father who is in heaven. For where two or three are
- 9:20gathered together in My name, I am in their midst.
- 9:23This is the Lord's first instruction to the church.
- 9:28If her brother sins, you go to him in private.
- 9:33If he does not repent, you take two or three witnesses, that
- 9:35they might be witnesses to your confrontation, that it might be
- 9:38true and honorable before the Lord.
- 9:40And if he your brother doesn't repent, you tell it to the
- 9:44church. So the church then goes after
- 9:48that brother, that they might learn to hear the word of God
- 9:51and repent, and that person doesn't repent after the church
- 9:55has gone after them. Christ says you treat him as a
- 9:57task, gather as a Gentile. You treat him as if they don't
- 10:00know the Lord because they manifested the fact that they
- 10:02don't know the Lord. You see here, here is Christ
- 10:07concerned about the purity of the church.
- 10:09Let the church be holy. This is his first instruction.
- 10:14It's got to be the number one. So if a church is not involved
- 10:18in disciplining its members who live in sin, that's not a
- 10:21glorious church. That's a bad church.
- 10:24That's a bad church. Don't go to that church.
- 10:27Why? Because they're more concerned
- 10:29about popularity than they are purity.
- 10:32If they're more concerned about popularity than they are purity,
- 10:35it's always going to be detriment to the people in the
- 10:37church. You got to love the people
- 10:40enough that you want them to honor the Lord and serve the
- 10:43Lord and glorify His name and live pure and holy lives.
- 10:47And so you go after them. They might live a righteous and
- 10:51pure and holy life. The Word of God has preached,
- 10:57and the word of God is a cleansing agent.
- 10:59Anyway, you've been made clean through the word I preached to
- 11:01you, Christ says in John 15. Then then we know that that the
- 11:05members of the church are concerned about the purity of
- 11:08the church. Why?
- 11:09Solomon tells US1 Sinner destroys much good.
- 11:13Just one, one little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough.
- 11:19So if there's one person living in sin, living in disobedience
- 11:22to God, not wanting to honor God, you go to that brother.
- 11:26You plead with that brother to repent and turn from their sins.
- 11:29If he doesn't, you go and take two or three witnesses with you
- 11:31that they might hear you as you plead with your brother.
- 11:34And then if they don't repent, you take you to the church.
- 11:37Tell the church. Let the church pursue them
- 11:41relentlessly because you care about the spiritual condition of
- 11:46their soul. The church must be concerned
- 11:50more about your spiritual condition than anything else.
- 11:57So you find a glorious church. That church is seen by its
- 12:03desire to make sure its members live pure and holy lives.
- 12:09Therefore, they are engaged in church discipline if need be.
- 12:12I remember when, when Kate went off to Indiana State play
- 12:17football, Lori went out with him to help him find a church.
- 12:24They found a church and and he went to the pastor and he asked
- 12:27him, do you guys practice church discipline?
- 12:30And the pastor said no, Kate was out of there, he was gone.
- 12:35Didn't want to be a part of a church that's not concerned
- 12:39about the purity of the church. That has to be the number one
- 12:43concern. It was Christ's first
- 12:45instruction to the church. It must be our first priority as
- 12:50a church. That's why Acts 5 is so crucial.
- 12:53And anasses of fire were killed in church because they lied
- 12:57about how much they sold their property for.
- 13:00It wasn't like they committed immorality or idolatry or
- 13:03involved in fornication with other people in the church.
- 13:06No, they just lied to the Holy Spirit about how much they they
- 13:09sold their property for and they died in church.
- 13:13And what happened? Great fear came upon the church,
- 13:18and great fear came upon the community in Jerusalem.
- 13:21I don't go to that church. You might die.
- 13:25But the church grew immensely because that's the kind of
- 13:31church God wants and to honor so important.
- 13:39Here's another one. Here's another one.
- 13:44Paul says it this way, First Timothy chapter 2.
- 13:51He says I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority
- 13:55over a man, but to remain quiet. For it was Adam who was first
- 13:59created and then Eve, and it was not Adam who was deceived, but
- 14:02the woman being deceived fell into transgression.
- 14:06But women will be preserved through the bearing of children
- 14:09if they continue in faith, love, sanctity and self restraint.
- 14:17Women pastors are characteristic of an unglorious church, not a
- 14:22glorious church. I permit not a woman to teach
- 14:27nor your super authority over man.
- 14:30All the qualifications for elder are in the masculine tense.
- 14:36If you have a woman pastor, you're in a unglorious church,
- 14:42not a glorious church. Read the Book of Revelation,
- 14:46Revelation chapter 2, Church of Thyatira.
- 14:50They had a woman pastor and God said that corruption has
- 14:54permitted the entire church and God was concerned about that.
- 15:00So you must understand these these are things that are
- 15:02important. Why?
- 15:04Because the church that preaches the word practices the word and,
- 15:07and, and what what Paul does, the first thing to do is if he
- 15:10crosses all cultural bounds, he says, I permit not a woman to
- 15:13teach no usurp authority over the man.
- 15:15Why wait? Because 4000 years ago this was
- 15:21set in motion. It's not about culture, it's
- 15:26about creation. And in the very beginning when
- 15:30God created a male and female, he created Adam first because he
- 15:33was the leader. And it was a woman who was
- 15:36tempted and fell into temptation.
- 15:40And therefore, it's important to realize that the order of
- 15:44creation determines the order of conduct in the church, no matter
- 15:48what the culture. People say, well, today's
- 15:52culture is different. No, it's not.
- 15:55No, it's not. You don't base your decision
- 15:56based on culture, you based it on the scriptures and what God's
- 16:00Word says. So that's why He goes back 4000
- 16:02years to show you the order of creation, to make sure you
- 16:05understand that men are to lead in the church and be pastors and
- 16:09shepherds in the church. That's a glorious find a
- 16:14glorious church, a church that preaches the Word, that honors
- 16:17the Word, that practices the Word that does not compromise
- 16:21the truth of the living God. That's where it all begins.
- 16:24As a father, you need to realize this as you lead your family and
- 16:29your own children. Where do your children go to
- 16:31church? Are they going to a glorious
- 16:33church? If not, what are you doing about
- 16:36that? Do you show them what the Word
- 16:38of God says? Teach them the truth of the word
- 16:41of God. They might not, they might not
- 16:44accept it, but you least you're held accountable for that
- 16:47because you know that's not the best and you want the best for
- 16:51your children. And so you teach them.
- 16:54I don't care how old they are, you still have to to teach them
- 16:56the truth of the Scriptures. That's so important.
- 17:00Why would you let your family member go to a church that's an
- 17:03unglorious church when they could go to a glorious church?
- 17:08Why would you have them go to church that's not good when they
- 17:10can go to a good church? As parents, we we still are
- 17:14protectors and providers and prophets and priests of our
- 17:18homes to lead and guide our children no matter what their
- 17:21age is. That's our responsibility.
- 17:24That's a godly man. Man, stand strong.
- 17:30You know, it's so important to realize that, that when a
- 17:34psalmist says help Lord, the godly man ceases to be that.
- 17:38That is just so true. You got to be strong.
- 17:44You got to stand firm on the truth of the living God without
- 17:49compromise. Find a glorious church #2 follow
- 17:57a godly man in that church. Find a glorious church.
- 18:02You follow a godly man in the church, follow that passionate
- 18:07person wherever they go. You go if they're there on
- 18:11Wednesdays, you're there on Wednesdays, they're there on
- 18:14Sunday for two services, You're there on Sunday for two
- 18:16services. They're in a Bible study, you're
- 18:18in a Bible study. You follow them wherever they
- 18:21go. You follow that godly man and
- 18:24you can see that the godliness of that man exercised in the
- 18:27life of his wife and his children.
- 18:30His children are in submission to his authority.
- 18:32His wife loves him and clings to him and is around him all the
- 18:35time. That's that's a godly man.
- 18:37That's the man you want to follow.
- 18:39See, that's why that's why Paul said follow me as I follow
- 18:41Christ. That's why in second
- 18:42Thessalonians are, excuse me, First Thessalonians chapter 2
- 18:45that they that those in Thessalonica became mimics and
- 18:48imitators of Paul and Silas. I'm sorry, that's that's first.
- 18:51That's one six. They they became imitators of
- 18:53them because they saw and fallen Silas something they didn't see
- 18:56anybody else. Godliness, holiness, purity,
- 18:59steadfastness, perseverance. They say I want that they follow
- 19:04them. Remember my father used to take
- 19:07me to prayer meeting on Wednesday nights and I was the
- 19:10only high school student in prayer meeting.
- 19:13You know, the high school student was there.
- 19:15My parents made me go. Parents today don't make their
- 19:17children do much, if anything. I don't, I don't understand
- 19:20that. I don't get that.
- 19:21If you're in that category, I feel sorry for you.
- 19:27You need to tell your children what they can and cannot do.
- 19:30They live in your house. They're under your authority.
- 19:34You're in charge, and God holds you responsible if they live
- 19:38under your roof. And so my parents said, you're
- 19:42going to primary and I was the only high school student there.
- 19:45But my dad said, I want you to follow the men.
- 19:47Follow these godly men in the church.
- 19:49When they pray, you pray. When you, when, when they
- 19:51preach, you listen. So I did, I just followed them
- 19:56and I heard and I saw and I watched their families and I
- 20:01watched their impact in the church.
- 20:04And I realized that they they were setting an example for for
- 20:07others to follow. And so I gleaned from that
- 20:11experience that I learned from them when, when, when they went
- 20:14out witnessing, I went out witnessing.
- 20:17When they went out in visitation, I went out in
- 20:19visitation. When they did this or did that
- 20:21in the church, I went along with them just to observe, to watch,
- 20:25to follow them. I begin to learn, I begin to
- 20:31grow simply because I had found a glorious church and began to
- 20:39follow the godly men in the church #3 foster your growth
- 20:48spiritually, foster your growth spiritually.
- 20:54We're to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ our
- 20:57Lord. Second Peter 3 verse #18 We're
- 21:01the kind of people God, God has given us His Word, the inspired
- 21:04word of God. That's profitable, that the man
- 21:07of God will be thoroughly furnished, thoroughly equipped,
- 21:10totally put together. You want your life put together.
- 21:14If your life is like Humpty Dumpty and you falling off the
- 21:17wall and it's everywhere, the only thing that's going to bring
- 21:19it back together is the word of God, not some kind of therapist.
- 21:24It's the word of the living God, that the man of God will be
- 21:27thoroughly furnished, totally equipped, totally put together
- 21:31for the glory and honor of God. Only God's Word can do that.
- 21:38So you must foster your growth spiritually.
- 21:40You must be in the Word. You must be on your knees.
- 21:43You must be understanding that God is doing a great work in and
- 21:46through your life. And so you begin to grow
- 21:48spiritually by being in the Word of God, on your knees, learning,
- 21:53growing step by step, moment by moment, day by day, as you walk
- 21:57with the Lord and you grow in the knowledge of His Word so
- 22:04incredibly important. When Paul left the church in
- 22:10Ephesus, he said in Acts chapter 20 verse #32 I commend you to
- 22:15God and the word of his grace, which is able to build you up,
- 22:21make you strong. I commend you to God and the
- 22:25word of his grace. I'm going to leave you with
- 22:27this. Just God and His grace, God and
- 22:30His Word, because that's all you need to be the men God wants you
- 22:36to be for the glory of His Kingdom.
- 22:40Find the glorious church. Follow a godly man in that
- 22:43church. Foster your growth spiritually
- 22:45#4 fulfill the Great Commission as you go.
- 22:51Matthew 28. As you're going, make disciples.
- 22:57The assumption is you're going to be going.
- 23:00Why not? As the Father has sent me, so
- 23:02send I you. John 2021.
- 23:05We are ambassadors for Christ. We're ministers of
- 23:08reconciliation. We had this great calling where
- 23:11we're representative of the Kingdom of God.
- 23:14So as you go, make disciples. As you're going, baptize them in
- 23:18the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
- 23:21Teach them to observe all that I've commanded you.
- 23:25And lo, I'm with you always, even to the ends of the earth,
- 23:29fulfill the Great Commission. So many times we, we forget
- 23:33about the opportunity that God puts before us.
- 23:35How many times have I told you over the years that the only
- 23:37reason God leaves you here after you're saved is for one reason
- 23:40and one reason only? And it's not to worship him,
- 23:43because when you get to heaven, your worship's going to be
- 23:45better is to share Christ, to be a living testimony to the
- 23:49testimony of, of what Christ has done in your life, to make
- 23:53disciples that others will hear the gospel and respond and
- 23:57follow the Lord. That's why God leaves you here.
- 24:01You're his representative, You're his ambassador.
- 24:03You're the minister of reconciliation.
- 24:05And God says I've sent you into the world to be my
- 24:10representative of my Kingdom. And when you represent me and
- 24:16you speak about me, you glorify my name.
- 24:19That great fill, the Great Commission #5 I love this one.
- 24:25Fear God and keep his commandments enthusiastic 12/13
- 24:30right? Fear God and keep his
- 24:32commandments that that's a summation of everything that
- 24:36that was Solomon's summation of life.
- 24:38It all comes down to 1 phrase. Fear God and keep his
- 24:45commandments. You want to be a godly man?
- 24:51Find a glorious church. Follow a godly man in that
- 24:55church, foster your growth spiritually, fulfill the Great
- 25:00Commission. Do that and the next thing you
- 25:05know you'll be fearing God and and keeping His commandments.
- 25:14Then lastly #6 fire up the next generation that they may serve
- 25:27the Lord. Fire up the next generation
- 25:32because now you can. Now you're well on your way to
- 25:37fire up the next generation to live for the Lord.
- 25:43Let me take you back to to the book of Deuteronomy and listen
- 25:46to what Moses says. It's so good he says, See, I
- 25:49have taught you statutes and judgments, just as the Lord
- 25:51might. God commanded me that you should
- 25:53do thus in the land where you are entering to possess it.
- 25:57So keep and do them, for that is your wisdom and your
- 26:00understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all
- 26:04these statutes and say surely this great nation is a wise and
- 26:09understanding people. Wow, just keep the statutes.
- 26:17Just just obey the statutes and everybody will know that you're
- 26:22a wise and understanding people. For what great nation is there
- 26:28that has a God so near to it as the Lord our God whenever we
- 26:33called on him? Or what great nation is there
- 26:35that has statutes and judgments is righteous as this whole law
- 26:40which I am studying before you today?
- 26:41Only give heed to yourself and keep your soul diligently set.
- 26:45You do not forget the things which your eyes have seen and
- 26:49they do not depart from your heart all the days of your life,
- 26:52but make them known to your sons and your grandsons.
- 26:59What are you made known to your sons and grandsons?
- 27:03They says this in chapter 5 of Deuteronomy verse 29.
- 27:11Oh, that they had such a heart in them that they would fear me
- 27:15and keep all my commandments always, that it may be well with
- 27:20them and with their sons forever.
- 27:26What a testimony that it may be well with them and their sons if
- 27:31they just hear the Word of God and keep the Word of God.
- 27:38And then he says over in Deuteronomy 6 verse #1 Now this
- 27:42is the commandment, the statutes and the judgments which the Lord
- 27:45your God has commanded me to teach you, that you might do
- 27:48them in the land where you go or where you are going over to
- 27:52possess it. Excuse me, so that you and your
- 27:54son and your grandson might fear the Lord your God and keep all
- 27:59His statutes and His commandments which I command you
- 28:02all the days of your life and that your days may be prolonged.
- 28:05O Israel, you should listen and be careful to do it, that it may
- 28:09be well with you and that you may multiply greatly, just as
- 28:13the Lord the God of your Father's has promised you in the
- 28:16land flowing with milk and honey.
- 28:17He says God, God wants to make you well in the land.
- 28:21He wants it to be well with you in the land.
- 28:25That's why he goes on to say in verse 24, he says the Lord has
- 28:28commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the Lord
- 28:31our God for our good always and for our survival as it is today.
- 28:39This is the key to surviving in this generation.
- 28:44It's the key to surviving in any generation, in any community, in
- 28:48any culture. It's learning and listening to
- 28:50the laws of God and keeping the statutes that it may be well
- 28:54with you. No matter how bad the culture is
- 28:56around you, no matter how bad the city is around you, no
- 29:00matter how bad everybody is at your school or at your work,
- 29:03keep the commandments. Love the Lord, honor the Lord,
- 29:07worship him, serve him. It will be well with you.
- 29:12This is for your survival. Wow, such great words.
- 29:23Having said that, let me go back to my outline and say this.
- 29:31The godly man goes to God incessantly in prayer #2 obeys
- 29:39God instantly without reservation and hesitation.
- 29:49The godly man disciplines himself implicitly.
- 29:57The godly man is the one who loathes his sin intensely, and
- 30:05the godly man is the one who yields to the Holy Spirit
- 30:09intently, and the godly man is the one who manages his own home
- 30:15impressively. That's how far we have come in
- 30:20the last three weeks. That's what we have covered.
- 30:24Let me give you the last two this morning.
- 30:27The godly man aspires to imitate the Lord intimately.
- 30:35He aspires to imitate the Lord intimately.
- 30:42The Bible says that if we say that we have come to know him
- 30:46first. John 26 that we are to walk as
- 30:50He himself has walked first. John 2 verse #6 In Ephesians
- 30:57chapter 5 verses one and two, it says that we are to be follows
- 31:00the Christ, we are to be imitators of Christ, and we are
- 31:03to walk in love. We, we are to mimic the Christ,
- 31:10and the godly man wants to imitate the Christ.
- 31:14Listen, every one of us imitates somebody or someone in some way
- 31:19throughout our lives, but we should be focused on imitating
- 31:22the Christ and walking with him. That requires that you walk very
- 31:30closely with the Lord. Remember Peter in Mark's gospel,
- 31:38it was they, they had left the, the upper room and they, they
- 31:41ascended the Mount of Olives, having crossed the kids run,
- 31:44kids run Brooke and they ascended the Mount of Olives
- 31:47and, and, and Christ takes his men there.
- 31:49He takes Peter, James and John a little further into the garden
- 31:52and says, stay with me, stay with me and, and, and pray with
- 31:57me for one hour. And Christ then goes a little
- 32:01further into the garden, begins to pray, and comes back to his
- 32:04men, and they're asleep. And he says to them, Could you
- 32:11not pray with me for one hour? I'm about to die for your soul.
- 32:17I'm about to give my life for the sins of man, but you
- 32:21couldn't pray with me for one hour.
- 32:24Pray, he says, lest you enter into temptation.
- 32:27So he says, you know what? I'm going to go away again and
- 32:30just just pray, lest you enter into temptation.
- 32:32So he goes away. He comes back again and guess
- 32:34what? They're still snoozing.
- 32:39It's like, really, fellas, you've got to be kidding me.
- 32:47But they couldn't stay awake. So listen to the words of Mark's
- 32:53Gospel in the 14th chapter when it says in verse 53, they led
- 33:05Jesus away to the high priest and all the chief priests and
- 33:09the elders and the scribes gathered together.
- 33:13Peter had followed him at a distance.
- 33:22That phrase right there was a killer for Peter, and Peter
- 33:29followed him from a distance. It says earlier that all the
- 33:33disciples had already forsook him and fled.
- 33:36They'd already left the scene even though they had seen the
- 33:40power of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane.
- 33:44Peter followed at a distance. If you aspire to imitate the
- 33:51Lord intimately, you cannot follow the Lord from a distance,
- 33:54from afar. You must follow Him up close and
- 33:58personal. You must be with him, communing
- 34:01with him, praying with him, reading His word, being close to
- 34:05him every day. Christ had told Peter, Peter,
- 34:08Satan, his ass has sift you like wheat.
- 34:10But I prayed for you that after you fall you will come back and
- 34:17strengthen your brethren. Christ had prayed for him.
- 34:23In spite of all that, Peter couldn't stay awake to maintain
- 34:27intimate communion with the Father of the Universe in spite
- 34:32of great turmoil. And so you end up following from
- 34:38a distance. You can't do that.
- 34:43You got to follow close Christ up close and personal.
- 34:47You must be with Him all the time.
- 34:49You must walk in the Spirit so you don't fulfill the lust of
- 34:52the flesh. You must live in communion with
- 34:56the true and living God. For every godly man aspires to
- 35:01imitate the Lord intimately, to walk with God.
- 35:04Remember Noah, Genesis 6? He walked with God, He did.
- 35:10And the culture he lived in was more corrupt in our culture.
- 35:17How do we know that God destroyed that culture?
- 35:20It was so bad, But the flood, so it can be done.
- 35:25It can't. You can't walk with God in
- 35:27intimacy. You can walk with God closely
- 35:29like Noah did because he did it in a culture that rejected God.
- 35:36The Bible says in Genesis 6 that the Lord looked upon upon man
- 35:41and saw that his heart was only evil continually and every
- 35:49thought of a man was only evil continually, and sin had run
- 35:54rampant throughout the world. But Noah, he walked with God.
- 36:01He aspired to live close to his God.
- 36:05He was a righteous man. That culture was so bad that God
- 36:10destroyed everyone and everything except that which was
- 36:16on the ark. Enoch was another who walked
- 36:22with God. He also aspired to live first.
- 36:29God. How about you?
- 36:29Do you aspire to imitate the Lord intimately, To walk in
- 36:40love, to walk in light as He is in the light, to walk in wisdom,
- 36:47to walk in humility? Lastly, to finish our outline,
- 36:57the godly man narrates the gospel instinctively as well as
- 37:09insightfully. Narrates the gospel
- 37:13instinctively and insightfully. He's like Jeremiah when Jeremiah
- 37:20said in Jeremiah 20 verse #9 but if I say I would not remember
- 37:24him or speak anymore in his name, then in my heart it
- 37:27becomes like a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary
- 37:31of holding it in, and I cannot endure it.
- 37:35That that's the godly man. If I try to hold in what God has
- 37:40said, if I had to hold back the word of God, it's just like,
- 37:43it's like burning in my bones. I got to let it out.
- 37:47Jeremiah says even though he ain't letting it out, nobody
- 37:51paid attention and nobody listened.
- 37:52Jeremiah was still going to preach it and teach it because
- 37:55it was instinctive to his lifestyle, because he was a
- 37:58prophet of the living God. Amos.
- 38:01Amos said this way. Amos chapter 3 verse #8 The Lord
- 38:05God has spoken. Who can but prophecy?
- 38:12If God has spoken, how can you keep quiet?
- 38:17And the godly man just can't keep quiet about the truth about
- 38:22the holiness of God, about his his God and His Kingdom.
- 38:28He just can't keep quiet about it.
- 38:32So he narrates the gospel instinctively and insightfully
- 38:35because his whole life centers around the gospel of Christ.
- 38:40That's the godly man. That's the man that God's
- 38:44looking for, the stand in the gap, gap to, to, to stand as an
- 38:48intercessor on his behalf. The kind of man that God uses
- 38:54for the glory of His Kingdom. In my prayer, that God will use
- 39:00us in that capacity. As fathers, we have a huge
- 39:04responsibility. We have a huge responsibility.
- 39:10There is nothing greater than being a father.
- 39:16Again, my concern is not that you you will fail as a father,
- 39:19but that you succeeded doing the wrong thing.
- 39:21Outside of being a father, outside of being a husband.
- 39:24That's where you need to be great.
- 39:27I, you know, I don't care if you're, you're a great preacher.
- 39:30I don't care if you're, you're, you're a great coach.
- 39:32I don't care if you're, you're a great teacher.
- 39:34I don't care if you're a great doctor or great nurse.
- 39:36Those are a dime a dozen. But be a great father, be a
- 39:42great husband, be a godly husband, a godly father.
- 39:46Those are few and far between. That's what psalmist said.
- 39:49Help Lord, the godly man ceases to be.
- 39:53Where is he? That's what you need to pursue.
- 39:59You pursue that. Wow.
- 40:03Your life, your family, your legacy will live on for
- 40:12generations to come simply because you said I want to be
- 40:18that godly man. Let me pray with you.
- 40:24Father, thank you for today. Lord, You are a great God and we
- 40:33as your people want to represent you and honor you.
- 40:41And Lord, we do fail many times. We fail our families, we fail
- 40:46our church, we fail our workplace.
- 40:49Most importantly, we fail you so many times.
- 40:51But yet, yeah, you pick us right back up again that we might move
- 40:56on to maturity in Christ to live for the glory of your Kingdom.
- 41:02My prayer, Father, is that each and every one of us would
- 41:05realize the great responsibility we have before you are God.
- 41:11Sometimes we forget about that. We we think of our
- 41:14responsibility at home or our responsibility at work or at
- 41:17school. And those are those are all good
- 41:19things, but our responsibilities to you, primarily our God, our
- 41:24King, our Master, our Lord, and we want to represent you.
- 41:31That's the key aspect that we represent you and our
- 41:36communication. We represent you and our
- 41:39conduct. We represent you and our
- 41:42conversation. We represent you everywhere
- 41:48because you Lord are everything. Pray this in Jesus name, Amen.
