- 0:00Do you have a case to bring before the courtroom
- 0:05of heaven? Do you have a burning question to
- 0:08ask of God? Why? Why did this happen? Why did I go
- 0:13through that divorce? Why did my child die of leukemia?
- 0:17Why was this reversal,
- 0:21this catastrophe, this disaster allowed into
- 0:24my life? Do you have a case to bring before
- 0:28God to the courtroom of heaven?
- 0:33Job had a case to bring before the Lord,
- 0:36and in the chapters we read today, he lays out his case.
- 0:41And the judge of Israel, the judge of all the nations,
- 0:45the judge of the universe will be answering
- 0:49Job and in Similarly, he will be
- 0:53answering us. We can bring our case before
- 0:56the Lord. He will hear us out, and then he
- 1:00will reply. Listen in and let's
- 1:04learn more. The courtroom of heaven.
- 1:07Welcome to the Daily Audio Torah. Today is August 27th.
- 1:12Now let's continue our journey reading through the entire Bible in
- 1:16one year. This week we are reading from the New Living Translation
- 1:19for the Old Testament and for the New
- 1:27Testament. Deuteronomy 14:16-29.
- 1:33The little owl, the great owl, the barn owl, the desert
- 1:37owl, the Egyptian vulture, the cormorant, the stork,
- 1:41herons of all kinds, the hoopoe, and the bat.
- 1:46All winged insects that walk along the ground are ceremonially
- 1:50unclean for you and may not be eaten. But you
- 1:54may eat any winged bird or insect that is ceremonially clean.
- 1:59You must not eat anything that has died a natural death.
- 2:03You may give it to a foreigner living in your town, or you may sell
- 2:06it to a stranger, but do not eat it yourselves, for you
- 2:10are set apart as holy to the Lord your God.
- 2:13You must not cook a young goat in its mother's
- 2:17milk. You must set aside
- 2:21a tithe of your crops, 1/10 of all the crops you harvest
- 2:25each year. Bring this tithe to the designated place of worship,
- 2:30the place the Lord your God chooses for his name to be honored,
- 2:34and eat it there in his presence. This applies to
- 2:37your tithes of grain, new wine, olive oil, and the firstborn
- 2:41males of your flocks and herds. Doing this will teach
- 2:45you always to fear the Lord your God. Now,
- 2:49when the Lord your God blesses you with a good harvest, the place of
- 2:52worship he chooses for his name to be honored might be too
- 2:56far for you to bring the tithe. If so, you may sell
- 3:00the little portion of your crops and herds, put the money in a
- 3:03pouch, and go to the place the Lord your God has chosen.
- 3:07When you arrive, you may use the money to buy any kind of food
- 3:11you want, cattle, sheep, goats, wine, or other
- 3:15alcoholic drink. Then feast there in the presence of
- 3:19the Lord your God and celebrate with your household.
- 3:22And do not neglect the Levites in your town, for they will receive
- 3:26no allotment of land among you. At the
- 3:29end of every 3rd year, bring the entire tithe of that year's
- 3:33harvest and store it in the nearest town. Give it to the Levites,
- 3:38who will receive no allotment of land among you,
- 3:41as well as to the foreigners living among you, the orphans
- 3:45and the widows in your towns, so that they can eat and be
- 3:49satisfied. Then the Lord your God will bless you in
- 3:53all your work.
- 3:57Job 23:1-27,
- 4:0423. Then Job spoke again: My
- 4:09complaint today is still a bitter one, and I try hard
- 4:12not to groan aloud. If only I knew where to find God!
- 4:16I would go to His throne and talk with Him there. I would lay out
- 4:20my case and present my arguments. Then I would listen to
- 4:24His reply and understand what He says to me.
- 4:27Would He merely argue with me in His greatness? No, He would
- 4:31give me a fair hearing. Fair and honest people can
- 4:35reason with Him, so I would be acquitted by
- 4:39my Judge. I go east, but He is not there.
- 4:43I go west, but I cannot find Him. I do not see Him
- 4:47in the north, for He is hidden. I turn to the south, but I cannot
- 4:51find Him. But He knows where I am going,
- 4:55And when he has tested me like gold in a fire, he will pronounce me
- 4:59innocent. For I have stayed in God's
- 5:03paths, I have followed his ways and not turned
- 5:07aside. I have not departed from his commands but have treasured
- 5:11his word in my heart.
- 5:15Nevertheless, his mind concerning me remains
- 5:19unchanged.
- 5:22And who can turn Him from His purposes?
- 5:25Whatever He wants to do, He does. So He
- 5:28will do for me all He has planned. He controls my
- 5:32destiny. No wonder I am so terrified
- 5:37in His presence. When I think of it, terror grips
- 5:41me. God has made my heart faint.
- 5:44The Almighty has terrified me. Darkness is all around me; thick,
- 5:49impenetrable darkness is everywhere.
- 5:53Why doesn't the Almighty open the court and bring judgment?
- 5:56Why must the godly wait for Him in vain?
- 5:59Evil people steal land by moving the boundary markers.
- 6:03They steal flocks of sheep, and they even take donkeys from
- 6:08the poor and the fatherless. A poor widow must surrender her valuable ox
- 6:12as collateral for a loan. The poor are kicked aside;
- 6:16the needy must hide together for safety. Like the
- 6:20wild donkeys in the desert, the poor must spend all their time just
- 6:24getting enough to keep body and soul together. They go into the
- 6:28desert to search for food for their children. They harvest
- 6:32a field they do not own, and they glean in the vineyards of the wicked.
- 6:35All night they lie naked in the cold, without clothing or covering.
- 6:40They are soaked by mountain showers, and they huddle against
- 6:43the rocks for want of a home. The wicked
- 6:48snatch a widow's child from her breast. They take the baby as
- 6:51a pledge for a loan. The poor must go about naked,
- 6:55without any clothing. They are forced to carry food while they themselves
- 6:59are starving. They press out olive oil without being allowed to
- 7:03taste it, and they tread in the winepress. As they suffer
- 7:07from thirst. The groans of the dying rise from the city,
- 7:11and the wounded cry for help. Yet God does not respond to
- 7:15their moaning. Wicked people rebel against
- 7:19the light. They refuse to acknowledge its ways. They will
- 7:22not stay in its paths. The murderer rises in the early dawn
- 7:26to kill the poor and needy. At night, he is
- 7:30a thief. The adulterer waits for the twilight,
- 7:33for he says, no one will see me then. He masks his
- 7:37face so no one will know him. They break into houses
- 7:41at night and sleep in the daytime. They are not acquainted with the light.
- 7:45The black night is their morning. They ally themselves with the terrors
- 7:49of the darkness, but they disappear from the earth as quickly
- 7:53as foam is swept down a river. Everything they own
- 7:57is cursed so that no one enters their vineyard.
- 8:03Death consumes sinners just as drought
- 8:07and heat consume snow. Even the sinner's own mother will
- 8:11forget him. Worms will find him sweet to eat.
- 8:15No one will remember him. Wicked people are broken like a tree
- 8:19in the storm, for they have taken advantage of the childless who have
- 8:22no protecting sons. They refuse to help the needy widows.
- 8:27God in His power drags away the rich. They may
- 8:31rise high, but they have no assurance in life.
- 8:34They may be allowed to live in security, but God is
- 8:37always watching them. And though they are great now, in a
- 8:41moment they will be gone like all others, withered like heads of grain.
- 8:45Can anyone claim otherwise? Who can prove me wrong?
- 8:50Then Bildad the Shuhite replied, God is powerful and
- 8:54dreadful. He enforces peace in the heavens. Who is
- 8:58able to count His heavenly army? Does His light
- 9:01not shine on all the earth? How can a mere mortal stand before God
- 9:06and claim to be righteous? Who in all the earth is pure?
- 9:09God is so glorious that even the moon and stars scarcely
- 9:14shine compared to Him. How much less are mere people, who are
- 9:17but worms in His sight!
- 9:21Then Job spoke again, How you have helped
- 9:25the powerless! How you have saved a person who has no
- 9:29strength! How you have enlightened my stupidity!
- 9:32What wise things you have said! Where have you gotten all
- 9:36these wise sayings? Whose spirit speaks through you? The dead
- 9:40tremble in their place beneath the waters. The underworld is
- 9:44naked in God's presence. There is no cover for the
- 9:47place of destruction. God stretches the northern sky over empty
- 9:51space and hangs the earth on nothing. He wraps the
- 9:55rain in His thick clouds, and the clouds do not burst with
- 9:59the weight. He shrouds His throne with His clouds.
- 10:03He created the horizon when He separated the waters. He set
- 10:07the boundaries for day and night. The foundations of heaven
- 10:10tremble. At his rebuke. By his power the sea
- 10:15grew calm; by his skill he crushed the great sea
- 10:18monster. His Spirit made the heavens beautiful, and his power
- 10:22pierced the gliding serpent. These are some of the minor
- 10:27things he does, merely a whisper of his power. Who can understand
- 10:31the thunder of his power?
- 10:35Job continued speaking, I make this vow by the living God
- 10:39who has taken away my rights, by the Almighty who has embittered my soul.
- 10:43As long as I live, while I have breath from God,
- 10:47my lips will speak no evil, and my tongue will speak no lies.
- 10:51I will never concede that you are right.
- 10:55Until I die, I will defend my innocence. I will
- 10:59maintain my innocence without wavering. My conscience is
- 11:02clear for as long as I live. May my enemy be
- 11:07punished like the wicked, my adversary like evil men.
- 11:10For what hope do the godless have when God cuts them off and takes away
- 11:14their life? Will God listen to their cry when trouble comes
- 11:19upon them? Can they take delight in the Almighty? Can they call
- 11:22to God at any time? I will teach you
- 11:26about God's power. I will not conceal anything that
- 11:30concerns the Almighty. But I don't need to, for you yourselves
- 11:33have seen all this. Yet, You are saying all these
- 11:37useless things to me. This is what the wicked will
- 11:41receive from God. This is their inheritance from the
- 11:45Almighty. If they have a multitude of children, their children
- 11:49will die in war or starve to death. Those who
- 11:53survive will be brought down to the grave by a plague, with no
- 11:56one to mourn them, not even their wives. Evil people may have
- 12:00all the money in the world, and they may store away mounds of clothing.
- 12:05But the righteous will wear that clothing, and the innocent will divide all
- 12:08that money. The houses built by the wicked are
- 12:12as fragile as a spider web, as flimsy as
- 12:16a shelter made of branches. The wicked
- 12:19go to bed rich but wake up to find that all their wealth is
- 12:23gone. Terror overwhelms them, and they are blown away
- 12:27in the storms of the night. The east wind carries them
- 12:30away, and they are gone; it sweeps them
- 12:33away; it whirls down on them without mercy.
- 12:37They struggle to flee from its power, but everyone cheers
- 12:41at them and mocks them.
- 12:482 Corinthians 1:12-2:11.
- 12:53We, Paul and his coworkers, can say with confidence and a
- 12:57clear conscience, that we have been honest and sincere in
- 13:00all our dealings. We have depended on God's grace, not on
- 13:05our own earthly wisdom. That is how we have acted toward everyone,
- 13:09and especially toward you. My letters have been
- 13:12straightforward, and there is nothing written between the lines and
- 13:16nothing you can't understand. I hope someday you will
- 13:20fully understand us, even if you don't fully understand
- 13:24us now. Then, on the day when our Lord Jesus comes
- 13:27back again, you will be proud of us in the same
- 13:31way we are proud of you. Since I was so sure of your
- 13:36understanding and trust, I wanted to give you a double blessing.
- 13:40I wanted to stop and see you on my way to Macedonia and again
- 13:43on my return trip. Then you could send
- 13:47me on my way to Judea. You may be asking why
- 13:50I changed my plan. Hadn't I made up my mind
- 13:54yet? Or am I like people of the world who say yes when
- 13:58they really mean no? As surely as God is true,
- 14:01I am not that sort of person. My yes means yes
- 14:05because Jesus Christ, the Son of God, never wavers between
- 14:09yes and no. He is the one whom Timothy, Silas,
- 14:13and I preached to you, and he is the divine yes,
- 14:17God's affirmation. Where all of God's promises have
- 14:20been fulfilled in him.
- 14:24That is why we say amen when we
- 14:28give glory to God through Christ. It is God who gives
- 14:32us, along with you, the ability to stand firm for Christ.
- 14:35He has commissioned us, and he has identified us as
- 14:39his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts
- 14:43as the first installment of everything he will give us.
- 14:47Now I call upon God as my witness that I am telling
- 14:50the truth. The reason I didn't return to Corinth was
- 14:54to spare you from a severe rebuke. But that
- 14:58does not mean we want to tell you exactly how to put your faith
- 15:02into practice. We want to work together with you so you will be full
- 15:06of joy as you stand firm in your faith.
- 15:11So I said to myself, no, I won't do it. I won't
- 15:15make them unhappy with another painful visit. For if I cause you pain
- 15:19and make you sad, who is going to make me glad?
- 15:23That is why I wrote as I did in my last letter,
- 15:26so that when I do come, I will not be made sad by the very
- 15:29ones who ought to give me the greatest joy. Surely you
- 15:34know that my happiness depends on your happiness. How painful
- 15:37it was to write that letter! Heartbroken,
- 15:41I cried over it. I didn't want to hurt you, but I wanted
- 15:45you to know how very much I love you. I am not overstating
- 15:49it when I say that the man who caused all the trouble hurt
- 15:54your entire church more than he hurt me.
- 15:57He was punished enough when most of you were united in
- 16:01your judgment against him. Now it is time to forgive
- 16:05him and comfort him. Otherwise, he may become so discouraged
- 16:08that he won't be able to recover. Now, now show him that
- 16:12you still love him. I wrote to you as I did to find
- 16:16out how far you would go in obeying me. When you forgive
- 16:20this man, I forgive him too. And when I forgive him for whatever is to
- 16:24be forgiven, I do so with Christ's authority for
- 16:28your benefit, so that Satan will not outsmart us.
- 16:32For we are very familiar with his evil schemes.
- 16:39Psalm 41:1-13.
- 16:45Oh, the joys of those who are kind to the poor!
- 16:48The Lord rescues them in times of trouble.
- 16:51The Lord protects them and keeps them alive. He gives
- 16:54them prosperity and rescues them from their enemies.
- 16:59The Lord nurses them when they are sick and eases their
- 17:03pain and discomfort. O Lord, I prayed,
- 17:06have mercy on me. Heal me, for I have sinned against
- 17:10you. But my enemies say nothing but evil about me.
- 17:14How soon will he die and be forgotten? they ask. They visit
- 17:18me as if they are my friends, but all the while they gather gossip,
- 17:23and when they leave, they spread it everywhere. All who
- 17:26hate me whisper about me, imagining the worst for me.
- 17:30Whatever he has, it is fatal, they say. He will never
- 17:33get out of that bed. Even my best friend, the one I trusted
- 17:38completely, the one who shared my food, has turned against me.
- 17:43Lord, have mercy on me. Make me well again so
- 17:47I can pay them back. I know that You are pleased with me,
- 17:50for You have not let my enemy triumph over me.
- 17:54You have preserved my life because I am innocent. You have
- 17:58brought me into Your presence forever.
- 18:01Bless the Lord, the God of Israel, who lives forever
- 18:06from eternal ages past. Amen and
- 18:09amen.
- 18:14Proverbs 22:5-6. The deceitful
- 18:18walk a thorny, treacherous road, Whoever values
- 18:22life will stay away. I want to speak to
- 18:26you today from our reading in Job chapters 23 through 27.
- 18:30And in the opening chapter of chapter 23,
- 18:34we have a picture that is being painted of Job coming
- 18:39to God, to the throne room, the courtroom
- 18:43of heaven, and he lays out his case.
- 18:48He basically says, I am asking for a fair hearing.
- 18:52I believe that God will give me a fair hearing. He goes
- 18:55on to say, I cannot find Him. I go east and north and south and
- 19:00west and I cannot find Him. But he lays out his case
- 19:04in the courtroom of heaven and he says, for I have
- 19:07stayed in God's paths. I have followed His ways and not turned
- 19:11aside. I have not departed from His commands but have treasured
- 19:15his word in my heart. Nevertheless,
- 19:18his mind concerning me remains unchanged, and who can turn
- 19:22him from his purposes? Whatever he wants to do, he does.
- 19:26So he will do for me all he has planned. He controls
- 19:31my destiny. Job recognizes that God is El Elyon.
- 19:35He is the Most High. He is sovereign, and He
- 19:42literally is laying out his case and presenting his arguments
- 19:47and basically saying, God, I am innocent.
- 19:51Why am I being punished? I am innocent.
- 19:56Why doesn't the Almighty open the court and bring judgment?
- 19:59Why must the godly wait for him in vain?
- 20:02And Job will soon get an
- 20:06answer from God from the very throne room and courtroom
- 20:11of Heaven. There is a courtroom
- 20:15in Heaven, and one of the ways
- 20:19that we approach God is He is the Judge.
- 20:22He is the Judge of the earth and the heavens. He is the Judge
- 20:27of the universe, and He is a righteous Judge.
- 20:30And yes, we can question Him.
- 20:35We can wrestle with Him, but ultimately we
- 20:39must yield and submit and bow
- 20:43to His kingship. And though we may
- 20:47not understand the why— why did this happen?
- 20:51Why did that person die? Why did that person get diabetes or
- 20:56cancer or leukemia? Why did my husband leave me
- 21:00and divorce me to go be with that other woman?
- 21:04Why? Perhaps we're asking the wrong question.
- 21:09Instead of why, we can say, God, I don't
- 21:12understand. It makes no sense to me,
- 21:17yet I trust you. Yet I trust you with
- 21:21my life. You have a plan for my life. You have a destiny
- 21:25for me. And I believe that even in this suffering that I'm going through,
- 21:30You're going to turn it all for good, that God works all
- 21:34things for good according to those who are called by
- 21:38God according to his purposes. So tomorrow
- 21:42when we pick it up in Job chapter 28,
- 21:45Job is finally going to have an answer from the
- 21:48judge as he's brought his case to the
- 21:53courtroom of heaven. He will hear from the judge tomorrow,
- 21:59and God will answer all of Job's questions.
- 22:04Don't miss tomorrow.
- 22:25Yeah, yeah,
- 22:36yeah.
- 23:10The Aaronic Blessing from Numbers chapter 6,
- 23:1424 to 26.
- 23:17Adonai bless you and keep you. Adonai make
- 23:22his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you.
- 23:26Adonai lift up his countenance upon you and give
- 23:30you peace.
