- 0:04Lucia Gomez called me and I' m fifty- eight years old. My
- 0:09life has always revolved around faith. I believe in God and have always done
- 0:14so, just like the generations of my family before me. My grandparents were
- 0:19very religious people, they were Catholics and they lived their faith every day.
- 0:25My parents inherited the same love for religion in their footsteps. They were also
- 0:32Catholics and taught me to live according to the teachings of our faith. Since
- 0:36I was a child and until today I go by the hand of my life
- 0:40partner, my husband Carlos. Since we crossed our lives, we have shared
- 0:47not only our joys and sorrows, but also our faith and belief in God.
- 0:53He, like me, has stood firm in his devotion and together,
- 0:57day after day, we strive to live according to the values and teachings of
- 1:00our Catholic religion. We both understand and believe deeply in the importance of faith
- 1:08in our lives. Our belief in God not only gives us strength and hope
- 1:15in difficult times, but also helps us to appreciate our daily blessings and joys.
- 1:22Together we work tirelessly to keep alive the tradition of our faith, transmitting
- 1:27our beliefs and values to our children and grandchildren, cultivating in them the love
- 1:33and respect for our religion, in our home. Faith is a part of
- 1:38our life, it is the core of our existence. It' s not
- 1:42just about going to Mass on Sundays, but how we live every moment of
- 1:47every day. Our house is full of love, kindness and compassion, values
- 1:52that our faith has taught us to value. Every night, before sleep,
- 1:57we say our prayers together, thanking for the blessings we have received and asking
- 2:04for guidance for the next day. Anyway, we have three kids. All
- 2:08three are men. Julio is twenty, Raul seventeen and the youngest Omar is
- 2:14fifteen. It was an ordinary Saturday and after a week of work and responsibilities
- 2:21that had left us exhausted, we had decided to go to the city center
- 2:27Tlaxcala. It is a very nice place and especially the center on weekend,
- 2:30our morning began in a small restaurant located in one of the long streets of
- 2:36the center. There the tables were made of rustic wood and the aroma of
- 2:42fresh coffee invited us to start the day with a smile. We have breakfast
- 2:47calmly, enjoying the flavors and our family company. After savouring the last sips
- 2:53of coffee, we went for a walk while eating an ice cream. After
- 3:00the show, we decided to go to a nearby park was very nice,
- 3:06surrounded by trees and with a lot of activity. That' s where we
- 3:09ran into a group of friends of my son Raúl. They had had a
- 3:15football match that morning and had stayed to chat under the shade of the trees.
- 3:21I' ve always liked those young people very much, so we settled
- 3:24in one of the stone benches and let Raul join his friends. In the
- 3:31meantime, we began to plan the time when we would go to Mass in
- 3:36the morning. The next day, in front of us was the Church.
- 3:40His bell tower was very nice and I just liked that park because it reminded
- 3:46me of Sunday mornings dedicated to faith and God. From our position we could
- 3:53listen to Raul' s friends speaking enthusiastically. They were talking out loud,
- 3:59but then something happened. A boy named Oscar asked them something unusual. He
- 4:05wanted to know if anyone in the Group knew the legend of the Church.
- 4:10The answers were negative. They all shook their heads. One of them encouraged
- 4:15Oscar to tell the story. Then, Oscar, with a mysterious smile on
- 4:21his face, began to narrate on our bench. My husband and two other
- 4:28children were immersed in their own conversation, talking about their tiring weeks at work
- 4:32and at school and about the latest events in the world of football. But
- 4:39I couldn' t concentrate on any of that. The history of Oscar had
- 4:44captured my curiosity more than anything about my religion and because every Sunday we went
- 4:48to that Church. I have been going to Mass for a lifetime, but
- 4:55one of them is the one that has marked me the most, because Oscar
- 5:00began to tell him that one of his uncles had told him that many years
- 5:03ago, in that same church there was an event that marked the life of
- 5:10all present. The protagonist of the story was Teresa, a woman deeply committed
- 5:15to her faith and devotion to the church. Unfortunately, it was possessed by
- 5:19a demon known as Sayatin, an evil spirit believed to be sent by Lucifer
- 5:26himself to perform evil acts in the bodies of people. The father of the
- 5:31time assumed the responsibility of carrying out the exorcism in Teresa. However, because
- 5:38of their lack of preparation and experience in these matters, everything went out of
- 5:43control. The demon managed to seize the priest' s body, causing him
- 5:49convulsions and drastically altering his voice, which acquired a grave tone similar to a
- 5:56voice coming from the hereafter with an enormous force Father R. The R or
- 5:59possessed began to attack those present, throwing them violently, as the exorcism developed
- 6:04in the midst of chaos, another priest realized the situation and decided to intervene
- 6:11courageously. He approached the devil and proposed a deal to protect the Community and
- 6:18themselves. The covenant was that the demon would cease to harm them and leave
- 6:25them alone in exchange for them to remain silent about what happened and allow the
- 6:30demon to return every thirty years to possess the church parents of that moment and
- 6:34to do with them as he wished. Surprisingly, the demon accepted the proposed
- 6:41deal and Oscar, who told the story, mentioned that his uncle had recently
- 6:46warned him that the thirty- year term was running out and it was rumored
- 6:51that the demon would be lurking ready to carry out his promise and possess one
- 6:56of the current priests of that church. At the time Oscar finished the story,
- 7:01I was so upset that I was going to take raul by the arm
- 7:05to leave, but something interrupted me from the church. Father Armando was coming
- 7:11out, but he was shouting things that didn' t understand. I don
- 7:15' t know if it was because we were away and we didn' t
- 7:20get it right or because I was really saying nonsense. He was completely naked,
- 7:25with a giant red cross painted on his chest. Father Ramón tried to
- 7:30reach him by yelling at him to stop, but Father Armando did not even
- 7:34change. I just kept running fast my family, Raul' s friends and
- 7:42I were totally surprised. Oscar said his uncle was right, that Father Armando
- 7:47was probably possessed. I yelled at my kids to get out of there.
- 7:54We took a cab that took us home. When we arrived we were all
- 8:00sweating cold and when my husband wanted to bring the matter up, I told
- 8:03him not to say anything, that those were rumors and that surely Father Armando
- 8:09' s incident had some explanation. And tomorrow we would ask the Father.
- 8:11Ramón knew that my husband had not heard the story that Oscar had told,
- 8:18but if he had heard when he said that Father Armando was surely possessed,
- 8:24for me all my son' s friend had told was a complete lack of
- 8:28respect for the church and he did not understand how it was possible for his
- 8:33uncle to be able to tell such twisted and false stories. I spoke privately
- 8:37to Raúl and told him not to mention anything about what his friend had told
- 8:41him, because he didn' t want him to be telling lies and blaspheming.
- 8:48Raúl told me that he would not comment and that I did not worry,
- 8:52because he already knew that his friend always told things that were not true.
- 8:56That afternoon we all ate in silence and after that. Someone knocked on
- 9:01the door when I opened I realized that it was the French neighbor who was
- 9:07going to tell me what they were saying about the father, arming that he
- 9:11had run away naked from the church and how undecent that seemed to him,
- 9:16I lied to him saying that I had seen nothing. It was a pious
- 9:20lie, but necessary in order not to continue to feed a gossip. I
- 9:24also told him that surely that was not true and if it was true,
- 9:30some explanation would have to be given the next day at Mass. We'
- 9:35d find out. The afternoon passed and gradually I thought about other things and
- 9:39no longer what I had heard and seen in the park. When night came,
- 9:45my family and I watched comedy movies and ate popcorn. It was about
- 9:50ten o' clock at night and about twelve o' clock at night,
- 9:54we all went to sleep, since the next day we had to go to
- 9:58Mass. Early I was very tired. So the dream overcame me, but
- 10:03around three o' clock in the morning, a loud sound woke me up.
- 10:07My husband was already awake, sitting on the bedside and when he saw
- 10:13me awake, he asked me why the church bell was ringing at three in
- 10:16the morning. That was unusual, almost impossible. Unless they had an emergency,
- 10:22my kids didn' t wake up, so we didn' t.
- 10:28It was best they didn' t find out anything. I was worried and
- 10:33I told him to ask for a cab to go over there as to whether
- 10:37something had happened. When we went out to wait for the taxi, we
- 10:43noticed that many people were also outside muttering about what was going on. Doña
- 10:46Francisca, told me that never in all the time I had lived there had
- 10:50the bell been heard. At that time I told him we' d go
- 10:56see what was going on and he told me he sent me up to the
- 11:00table. She was my friend, but sometimes I didn' t like her
- 11:05for gossip. The bell kept ringing and ringing while we were in the cab.
- 11:11When we arrived we noticed that there was someone where the bell was located.
- 11:16It was Father Armando, who was moving her repeatedly, but behind him
- 11:20was Father Ramón, who seemed to want to stop him, but did not
- 11:26succeed. Seeing that several people were spectators, Father Ramón yelled at us from
- 11:31there to go home, that everything was fine. It was just that Father
- 11:35Armando had had an anxiety crisis. The truth. I thought it was something
- 11:41else, but I decided to believe him and told my husband to leave for
- 11:46a while. After we get home. The sound of the bell stopped and
- 11:50was not heard again all morning. But the worst of all happened that Sunday.
- 11:58We got up at seven in the morning and got ready to go to
- 12:01the nine o' clock Mass. I was intrigued by all the events of
- 12:05the day before and at dawn. I wanted to know what was really going
- 12:11on with the father arming. My husband took my hand before entering the Church.
- 12:16By giving me security, we arrived and sat down, because as my
- 12:22family and I were always among the first to reach the Church, we had
- 12:26places to choose. Sometimes my children did not want to wake up so early
- 12:31on Sundays, but I always told them that, just as they had an
- 12:35obligation at school, they also had an obligation to God. It was eight
- 12:41twenty in the morning when we arrived so there was no one else in the
- 12:46Church. But the more time passed, the more people were coming, the
- 12:50people behind us were talking about the bell that sounded the night before and I
- 12:54was getting nervous. Suddenly it crossed my mind that perhaps what Oscar had said
- 13:01was true, although I was more reasonable thinking that a boy his age might
- 13:05not be right about something like that. It was certain that the events that
- 13:13had happened were just a coincidence. When the clock struck nine o' clock
- 13:18in the morning, the Church was completely full. In fact, there were
- 13:24even people standing outside to listen to the Mass. It started in due time.
- 13:30The choir, which was made up of children, began to sing and
- 13:33several men played their instruments, we sang the songs to start and a few
- 13:41minutes later the father came out wearing a white robe. We all get up
- 13:46from the wooden benches in a sign of respect. When I saw him there
- 13:50I felt calmer. That meant everything was fine. We all loved how the
- 13:58father arming gave the humility. For those who do not know the homily is
- 14:03the part where the priest gives a small sermon and reflection on the readings of
- 14:07the day. His way of speaking always filled our soul with peace, but
- 14:13when I saw him more carefully, I realized that the father arming looked different
- 14:16with a strange appearance and showing obvious signs of tiredness and paleness. Surprisingly,
- 14:26his usual smile was not seen on his face. He walked to the altar
- 14:31slowly and bowed. Before he began Mass, he gave the initial greeting and
- 14:37carried out the penitential act. However, his voice sounded weak, snoring and
- 14:43somewhat strange during the readings and the psalm preferred to sit in his chair looking
- 14:48into the void. His eyes were narrowed as if he intended to rest or
- 14:56even sleep. He also began to sweat, showing clear discomfort or nervousness.
- 15:05My husband looked silently at me, inquiring whether the father arming would be suffering
- 15:09from some illness, to which he answered yes with a concerned assent, although
- 15:16we both knew it was something else. The priest’ s countenance looked desolate,
- 15:24showing a very deteriorated state of health. Then he began the homily that
- 15:28we both longed to hear from all present. We looked forward to his words,
- 15:37hoping that he might share with us the details of his discomfort that told
- 15:41us that he felt bad or something like that, but that was not the
- 15:45case. He stood on the podium and looked at us with disgust on his
- 15:50face, and for a short moment he seemed to vomit. However, he
- 15:58tried to make an effort to read. He began by saying that morning during
- 16:03the sacred readings, Jesus transmitted his message to us. However, in the
- 16:10midst of his speech, the father, arming, abruptly stopped his words.
- 16:15He took his hand to dry his sweat. Suddenly a series of toces burst
- 16:19into the environment through the amplification system. The words uttered became unintelligible, subduing
- 16:27the faithful in a bewilderment, until suddenly he began to say very ugly things,
- 16:33rudeness and curses. We were all upset, for the fact that he
- 16:41was ill did not in any way justify the obscenities that came out of his
- 16:45lips in that sacred enclosure. Then he began to say sorry. I corrected
- 16:52myself in today' s readings and once again, his oratory was interrupted.
- 16:57His voice arns acquired a different timbre, a sinister depth. Sons of we
- 17:04were able to perceive the sighs of unbelief spread among the people who were there.
- 17:11There was even booing. We all listened perplexedly to the words he said
- 17:18next, words I will never forget. His throat began to clear and his
- 17:22eyes looked strange until he said they' re all going to burn in hell.
- 17:29That was certainly not the voice we knew of Father Armando. At the
- 17:33time I realized that what I was probably saying to Oscar was probably true.
- 17:40I didn' t understand how your uncle knew that information. I had probably
- 17:44heard it from someone else, but it hurt my soul to know that in
- 17:48the church we went to every Sunday there was a horrible demon hidden and that
- 17:52he had probably owned Father Armando' s life. After all of us heard
- 17:59such a disturbing statement, some rose up and left the church compound. The
- 18:06bewildered ministers did not know how to act or what measures to take. Father
- 18:11Ramon only denied his head, admitting his disapproval and becoming very nervous. My
- 18:18children looked at us for an answer, but we didn' t know it.
- 18:23Father Armando began to breathe with difficulty. His body seemed to fade,
- 18:30but he resolutely clung to the podium not to succumb. One of the ministers
- 18:36alerted him to his apparent fall, rose from his seat and ran to his
- 18:41aid, holding him to prevent his fall. However, the priest finally collapsed,
- 18:48unable to resist the forces that abandoned him. Witnesses of that dramatic episode,
- 18:55other people in the church quickly approached the NS, giving their support and
- 18:59uttering alarmed screams. They carried the father armed in their arms and rushed him
- 19:07to the parish offices. The Mass on that morning had ended abruptly and overwhelmingly.
- 19:15Father Ramón told us not to worry, that the father would be fine,
- 19:19that he was just going through attacks. Having anxiety, we went home
- 19:26and never talked about it again. I didn' t allow my children or
- 19:30my husband to say anything about it. But I couldn' t help thinking
- 19:34at night that it had really happened with the father arming. The following Sunday,
- 19:40Father Ramón informed us about the serious illness that was afflicting the father arming,
- 19:45although curiously he omitted to make any mention of the deep and snoring voice
- 19:49that had told us that we would go to hell. It was precisely on
- 19:55that occasion that we had the last opportunity to see the father arming himself in
- 19:59the Church. His words left in us uncertainty and amazement, But the lack
- 20:04of explanations from Father Ramón left us with a vacuum of answers, because,
- 20:10although several people approached to ask him what had happened, in fact, he
- 20:14completely ignored the questions. Since then, the absence of the father arming became
- 20:21evident in every Sunday celebration. We missed his comforting presence and his wisdom-
- 20:29filled teachings. The parishioners were looking for some news or additional information among themselves,
- 20:34but we only found humors, vagues and baseless speculations. The parish was
- 20:41plunged into a sense of bewilderment and nostalgia. The demon had seized him.
- 20:47Of that I have no doubt anonymous account
