- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:18Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode and today
- 0:22Speaker 1: on the show, we're talking guns season. And to do that,
- 0:26Speaker 1: I'm first joined by my father to discuss our gun
- 0:29Speaker 1: hunting traditions. And then I'm going to be met with
- 0:31Speaker 1: Adam Weatherby and Kevin Welkerson to discuss firearm hunting gear setting,
- 0:36Speaker 1: an ethical max range, becoming a better marksman, and much more.
- 0:44Speaker 1: And now welcome to the Wired to Hunt Podcast, brought
- 0:48Speaker 1: to you by Onyx. And as I just mentioned, today's
- 0:53Speaker 1: episode is all about guns season. You know, many states
- 0:57Speaker 1: across the country right about now, give or take, have
- 1:00Speaker 1: or will be soon opening their firearms seasons for deer
- 1:04Speaker 1: and other species. So for many of us, this time
- 1:08Speaker 1: of season is all about a shift. You know, hunting
- 1:12Speaker 1: tactics change, gear choices change, dear behavior changes, and hunting
- 1:17Speaker 1: goals changed. So you know, all these changes, all these shifts,
- 1:22Speaker 1: that's what i want to talk about today. So first
- 1:25Speaker 1: I'm bringing on my father for our intro conversation. We
- 1:29Speaker 1: want to kind of talk about the history, the culture,
- 1:32Speaker 1: and the traditions of what guns season and gun hunting
- 1:36Speaker 1: means in my family. Now, we're just fresh off of
- 1:39Speaker 1: our first gun hunt of the season together, my dad
- 1:41Speaker 1: and I up at our Northern Michigan deer camp Ken
- 1:44Speaker 1: Ravan as we call that, So we're gonna talk about that.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Once we wrap that up, then we're gonna kick it
- 1:49Speaker 1: over to an earlier conversation I had with Adam Weatherby
- 1:52Speaker 1: and Kevin Wilkerson from weather Be Inc. To discuss all
- 1:55Speaker 1: sorts of more contactical and gear related questions around hunting.
- 2:00Speaker 1: So things like how to pick the right rightful, how
- 2:02Speaker 1: to pick the right cartridge, um, how to become a
- 2:05Speaker 1: better shoot, or how to I don't think about the
- 2:08Speaker 1: ethics of gun hunting, and a number of different things
- 2:11Speaker 1: along those lines. So we kind of cover both sides
- 2:13Speaker 1: of gun hunting, the the tangible tactical stuff and then
- 2:18Speaker 1: the intangible, bigger picture culture side of it, which which
- 2:22Speaker 1: I hope is going to make for an interesting conversation
- 2:25Speaker 1: and when you guys will benefit from. So without further ado,
- 2:30Speaker 1: I say, we just get right into it. I've got
- 2:33Speaker 1: to repeat guests here with me for the introduction, Mr
- 2:37Speaker 1: David Kenyon, thanks for hopping back on the show. Hey,
- 2:40Speaker 1: you're welcome. Uh do you have a good time this
- 2:44Speaker 1: past weekend? Pops? I had a great time. It was fun.
- 2:48Speaker 1: It was fun, and I kind of I screwed up.
- 2:51Speaker 1: As you know, we already talked about this, but I
- 2:52Speaker 1: meant to bring my podcast recording equipment to camp with
- 2:55Speaker 1: me so we could do this chat they're together sitting
- 2:58Speaker 1: in front of fire, but I forgot all that stuff. Um,
- 3:01Speaker 1: But what I wanted to do here was, as you know, UM,
- 3:06Speaker 1: the rest of this podcast conversation with when the main
- 3:10Speaker 1: two guests is going to be about, you know, kind
- 3:11Speaker 1: of like the tactical and gear related questions around what
- 3:15Speaker 1: it means once firearms season opens up. But for you
- 3:19Speaker 1: and me, I know, when gun hunting season opens up,
- 3:22Speaker 1: it means more than just changing our gear and changing
- 3:26Speaker 1: how we're hunting. It also kind of means something different
- 3:29Speaker 1: for I don't know us, like culturally. So that's kind
- 3:33Speaker 1: of what I wanted to talk with you about in
- 3:35Speaker 1: addition to just kind of talking about the weekend. But
- 3:38Speaker 1: how would you describe our tradition for guns season up north? Um?
- 3:44Speaker 1: I don't know We've talked about a little bit in
- 3:46Speaker 1: the past, but how would you describe kind of what
- 3:48Speaker 1: this past weekend meant for you this year and every year.
- 3:52Speaker 1: So there were two holidays in November for family Thanksgiving
- 3:59Speaker 1: where we got everybody together, we had a big turkey
- 4:01Speaker 1: dinner and um celebrated thankfulness for all that we've been given.
- 4:06Speaker 1: And opening day of gear season, big holiday. Yeah, and
- 4:12Speaker 1: you know, to your point, Grandpa would start talking about
- 4:15Speaker 1: the the the opening day of deer season back in June,
- 4:21Speaker 1: you know, and literally he'd start coming off the monks,
- 4:25Speaker 1: only five more months to deer hunting season, Dave, un
- 4:28Speaker 1: it's gonna be so excited to get out there, so
- 4:30Speaker 1: on and so forth, and so for us, it was
- 4:32Speaker 1: it was really a ritual. There was something we celebrated,
- 4:36Speaker 1: and getting everybody together and getting the guys together and
- 4:40Speaker 1: and being part of that that group, and especially you
- 4:44Speaker 1: know that first morning heading out for the for the
- 4:46Speaker 1: big hunt was kind of in our blood. It really was. Yeah,
- 4:52Speaker 1: And we talked about this over the past couple of days,
- 4:55Speaker 1: how the opening period of gun season just as a
- 5:01Speaker 1: different feeling than the opening of bow season because you
- 5:04Speaker 1: and me we started bow hunting when I was I
- 5:06Speaker 1: don't know, twelve years old or thirteen years old. So
- 5:08Speaker 1: at that point we had these Now we have two
- 5:10Speaker 1: parts of our season. We had both season and then
- 5:12Speaker 1: we had a gun season. And now today that's still
- 5:15Speaker 1: the case, a little bit more so for me since
- 5:17Speaker 1: I you know, I'm bow hunting a ton, um. But
- 5:20Speaker 1: I was telling you how it's it's a very different
- 5:23Speaker 1: thing for me now. Both season for me is this
- 5:26Speaker 1: this go go go go, blood, sweat and tears, hunting
- 5:32Speaker 1: like crazy, you know, trying to kill a mature buck,
- 5:35Speaker 1: traveling across the country up early, up late. Uh, just
- 5:39Speaker 1: a grind, especially during the rut. When it comes to
- 5:43Speaker 1: gun season. For me, it's a little bit of a shift. Um.
- 5:47Speaker 1: It was kind of even the case back when you
- 5:49Speaker 1: and I were both hunting together when we were younger. Um,
- 5:51Speaker 1: we bow hunted, We were out there quite a bit,
- 5:53Speaker 1: but it was much more of like a solitary activity
- 5:56Speaker 1: like you and me would go hunt. We're hunting behind
- 5:59Speaker 1: the house. But when guns season came, there was this
- 6:02Speaker 1: shift and it's the same the same shift we have today,
- 6:04Speaker 1: which is it shifts from more of a focus on
- 6:07Speaker 1: the hunt, a focus on getting out there kind of
- 6:10Speaker 1: solitary try to kill your deer. To this shift towards
- 6:13Speaker 1: the camaraderie and and all the pomp and circumstances around
- 6:17Speaker 1: the hunt, that kind of becomes a little bit more important.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Would you do? Would you agree? Is that kind of
- 6:24Speaker 1: when guns and opens, it's kind of more about the
- 6:26Speaker 1: experience and the people in the place than the actual
- 6:29Speaker 1: sitting out there is trying to shoot something. Yes, I
- 6:32Speaker 1: would say was both. I mean, it was absolutely the former, right,
- 6:36Speaker 1: It was getting us all together. We had some of
- 6:38Speaker 1: the people in our hunting group we hadn't seen since
- 6:41Speaker 1: the previous you know, rightefless season, So it was getting
- 6:45Speaker 1: anybody together. We talked about it, We had phone calls
- 6:48Speaker 1: and and no sent back and forth during the year
- 6:50Speaker 1: and how excited we were to get together and on
- 6:52Speaker 1: all of that. So finally getting together was kind of
- 6:55Speaker 1: this culmination of all this anticipation and all this excitement.
- 6:59Speaker 1: But you know, we're all talking about the big gear
- 7:01Speaker 1: we're going to get and talking about the sign we've seen,
- 7:04Speaker 1: and you know, and gee, I'm gonna go out here
- 7:06Speaker 1: and the big one of the big rituals mark and
- 7:08Speaker 1: I'm sure you remember this is the night before. We
- 7:10Speaker 1: typically would come up either the day before opening day
- 7:13Speaker 1: or a couple of days before opening day, whatever we
- 7:15Speaker 1: possibly could. And uh, you know, certainly not something that
- 7:21Speaker 1: you would probably suggest a hundred due, but we spent
- 7:25Speaker 1: that first day or two going out and scouting. Right now,
- 7:29Speaker 1: we've been up their previous weekends, maybe even a month
- 7:31Speaker 1: or two prior, and that sort of thing. But you know,
- 7:33Speaker 1: we just, uh, we would go out and kind of
- 7:36Speaker 1: checked a sign again, you know, check the trail camps
- 7:39Speaker 1: if they were out. Um, try to stay out of
- 7:41Speaker 1: the woods as much as possible, but if we if
- 7:43Speaker 1: we had that last bit of stuff to do, we
- 7:45Speaker 1: would And it was all excitement about the signing song.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I saw scrape here, and I saw you know, rubbed
- 7:52Speaker 1: there and a scrape and so and so forth. That
- 7:55Speaker 1: was part of the excitement that built up to that.
- 7:57Speaker 1: And um, and then usually the night before we usually
- 8:00Speaker 1: stay in. Sometimes we go up, but usually we'd stay in.
- 8:02Speaker 1: We'd make you know, if somebody would bring up a
- 8:04Speaker 1: big pot of chili or or venison stew or chop
- 8:08Speaker 1: suey or something, we have a great meal, you know,
- 8:11Speaker 1: talk around the table, and we've finished off the night
- 8:14Speaker 1: playing poker, right, But the whole time we're telling stories,
- 8:18Speaker 1: both telling stories about deer hunting season has gone past,
- 8:21Speaker 1: and looking up on the wall with all the antlers
- 8:24Speaker 1: and telling stories about each one of them, and you
- 8:26Speaker 1: know and saying, man, I remember that hunt, Dad, when
- 8:28Speaker 1: you were out and that deer came right up on
- 8:30Speaker 1: top of you, or at one with Uncle Steve where
- 8:33Speaker 1: you shot the deer the big eight point one weekend
- 8:35Speaker 1: and you know, you came home and you promised, you know,
- 8:38Speaker 1: I looked up at you as a dad, and we're
- 8:39Speaker 1: going to do the same thing the following weekend, and
- 8:41Speaker 1: lo and behold, we did, you know. So that was
- 8:43Speaker 1: just all of that, that storytelling and and the family
- 8:46Speaker 1: coming together and and you know, we were especially my dad.
- 8:50Speaker 1: My dad was running all the time. I mean, he
- 8:52Speaker 1: had two jobs. He was a director at the gas
- 8:54Speaker 1: company and he was a you know, a senior officer
- 8:57Speaker 1: in the army, and he never had a lot of
- 8:59Speaker 1: free time. So that was the time we spent as
- 9:02Speaker 1: a family. And and you know, really when we kind
- 9:05Speaker 1: of came together and it was okay just to kind
- 9:06Speaker 1: of stop and settle down and and share stories and
- 9:10Speaker 1: share time together. Yeah, and that is exactly what it
- 9:13Speaker 1: is now. I feel like for you and me and
- 9:15Speaker 1: the rest of the guys that come to camp now,
- 9:17Speaker 1: it's it's that chance to get away from everything else,
- 9:22Speaker 1: get up to the cabin, turn off your cell phones,
- 9:25Speaker 1: turn off your iPads, go off the grid, and just
- 9:29Speaker 1: be together and the hunting and the that is that
- 9:34Speaker 1: is the excuse to get up there and be together
- 9:38Speaker 1: and to tell these stories and to eat some good food. Um.
- 9:42Speaker 1: But at least for me now, the most important part
- 9:45Speaker 1: of gun hunting season, for me, at least here in Michigan,
- 9:48Speaker 1: is being with you guys and being up there at
- 9:51Speaker 1: Ken Rovan. And uh, of course, yes we'd love to
- 9:55Speaker 1: shoot a deer. But I would if you told me, like,
- 9:58Speaker 1: here's okay, here's a situation. If you told me I
- 10:01Speaker 1: could only choose one of these outcomes. I could go
- 10:04Speaker 1: up to kenn Ravan, what we call her deer camp.
- 10:05Speaker 1: I could go up there next year, and I could
- 10:08Speaker 1: kill a five year old hundred fifty buck next year.
- 10:12Speaker 1: That's option A. But I'm the only one there. Just
- 10:16Speaker 1: be up at Kenn Raven by shoot a hundred and
- 10:18Speaker 1: fifty five and half year old buck. Or option B
- 10:22Speaker 1: is that I get to go up there and I
- 10:24Speaker 1: don't kill buck, but I'm there with you and Uncle
- 10:27Speaker 1: Steve and Terry and Josh and maybe my son, and
- 10:31Speaker 1: we get to spend a week up there and just
- 10:33Speaker 1: have the best time telling stories and eating good food
- 10:35Speaker 1: and all that. I'm gonna take Option B every time.
- 10:40Speaker 1: That is what I would agree. And frankly, and you've
- 10:45Speaker 1: talked about this before in the show. That's kind of
- 10:48Speaker 1: the way it's been for the last ten years. So
- 10:50Speaker 1: the populations just kind of dwindles where we just have
- 10:54Speaker 1: not seen a lot of deer up there in the
- 10:55Speaker 1: last ten fifteen years. Prior to that, as we've talked about,
- 10:58Speaker 1: we saw more, and when we did get a chance
- 11:01Speaker 1: to bring in, you know, getting a deer every season
- 11:04Speaker 1: or a couple of year of the season was not
- 11:05Speaker 1: unheard of. It's been kind of, you know, kind of
- 11:08Speaker 1: slip pickens over the last fifteen years. And yet we
- 11:12Speaker 1: all still go up there. We all still love being together.
- 11:14Speaker 1: We all still go out and you know, start our
- 11:17Speaker 1: stands up and do the scouting and do all the
- 11:18Speaker 1: other things. Can we tell our stories not because quite honestly,
- 11:22Speaker 1: any of us expects to come home with a hundred
- 11:25Speaker 1: and fifty and you know, mature buck. But because we
- 11:28Speaker 1: love being together and we love what Ken Roban represents,
- 11:31Speaker 1: and we love God's creation and being outdoors. Yeah, it is.
- 11:36Speaker 1: It is that that culture, that tradition, that connection to
- 11:41Speaker 1: a place and the people that you share with makes
- 11:45Speaker 1: it one of my absolute favorite times of year every year.
- 11:48Speaker 1: And this weekend was a great example of that. I
- 11:50Speaker 1: mean had a blast. I know short, we had to
- 11:53Speaker 1: you know, two nights, two days, but so nice is
- 11:56Speaker 1: to be up there. And as you know, that first morning,
- 12:00Speaker 1: I said, you know what, guys, you guys go out,
- 12:02Speaker 1: head out at dawn, go hunt. I'm gonna take it
- 12:04Speaker 1: a little slow this morning and just kind of soak
- 12:07Speaker 1: it in and rejuvenate myself because I've been going NonStop
- 12:11Speaker 1: for three weeks, hunting every single day all day, kind
- 12:14Speaker 1: of just going after it during the rut, and I've
- 12:16Speaker 1: just kind of warmed myself to a pulp. So Saturday morning,
- 12:20Speaker 1: you guys headed out at you know, before first light,
- 12:23Speaker 1: and I waited. I drank a cup of coffee and
- 12:25Speaker 1: sat in the chair and I just looked up at
- 12:29Speaker 1: the wall with all the bucks on the wall and
- 12:30Speaker 1: thought through some of those stories that I remember, and
- 12:33Speaker 1: some of those moments I remember, and sat and looked
- 12:36Speaker 1: out the front window and imagine what it was like
- 12:39Speaker 1: when Grandpa and Jerry were sitting in the same chairs
- 12:42Speaker 1: looking out across the lawn and out in that field
- 12:45Speaker 1: it used to be a field. Now it's a forest.
- 12:47Speaker 1: And thought about, you know, the days when I was
- 12:50Speaker 1: a little kid up here, and imagined how cool it's
- 12:52Speaker 1: going to be next year or the year after that
- 12:54Speaker 1: when I bring my son up. And I just spent
- 12:57Speaker 1: I don't know, an hour and a half maybe when
- 13:00Speaker 1: typically i'd be out hunting. I just spent that first
- 13:02Speaker 1: hour and a half sitting there and just kind of
- 13:03Speaker 1: taking it in and just closed my eyes and just
- 13:06Speaker 1: took some deep breath and just try to smell it.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Just smell and think and taste, like just soak it
- 13:12Speaker 1: all in. It was. It was so nice. And then
- 13:14Speaker 1: I headed out to go hunt, and I just slowly
- 13:18Speaker 1: walked my way. I still hunted my way, uh to
- 13:21Speaker 1: the north, across that public land towards some of our
- 13:23Speaker 1: old stomping grounds back when you and I were hunting together,
- 13:27Speaker 1: and I just walked and took a couple of steps,
- 13:29Speaker 1: stopped glassed, looked around, took a couple of steps, took
- 13:32Speaker 1: I don't know, forty five minutes or something, maybe longer
- 13:35Speaker 1: almost an hour, I guess, to get to the location
- 13:38Speaker 1: where you and I used to hunt our old blind.
- 13:41Speaker 1: And I'm in the old blind and now it's all
- 13:44Speaker 1: I don't know if when the last time it is
- 13:45Speaker 1: you got out there to that spot, but it's all collapsed.
- 13:48Speaker 1: There's hardly anything left. There's just on one of the trees,
- 13:52Speaker 1: there's you can see a couple of nails, and there's
- 13:54Speaker 1: a little bit of that old carpeting that Grandpa used
- 13:57Speaker 1: to use as walls for the blinds um so that
- 14:00Speaker 1: some of that is on one of these trees. And
- 14:03Speaker 1: then you can see a couple of the posts that
- 14:04Speaker 1: have been cut. So I was just standing there in
- 14:07Speaker 1: the midst of what used to be are blind, and
- 14:09Speaker 1: I remember just touching the nails and rubbing my hands
- 14:13Speaker 1: against the old carpet and just like kind of touching
- 14:15Speaker 1: that tree and just like physically connecting with this place
- 14:19Speaker 1: that we've spent, you know, so many great times, so
- 14:23Speaker 1: long ago. And as I'm standing there just kind of
- 14:26Speaker 1: thinking about these things, I hear crunch, crunch, crunch, literally
- 14:31Speaker 1: breaking me out of my little reminiscence here come to
- 14:34Speaker 1: deer walking right up on me. And it was such
- 14:37Speaker 1: a cool moment and kind of like, I don't know,
- 14:40Speaker 1: one of those weird little things that UM just made
- 14:44Speaker 1: for a really cool experience out there that brought it
- 14:47Speaker 1: all back to why why we do this stuff in
- 14:49Speaker 1: the first place? You know, Yeah, it was you know,
- 14:52Speaker 1: it was interesting when you that morning when we were
- 14:54Speaker 1: talking about where we're going to go and that sort
- 14:56Speaker 1: of thing, and you said you were gonna, um, you
- 14:59Speaker 1: said you're gonna head out. Initially you said you're gonna
- 15:01Speaker 1: head south right and or you're gonna head north. And
- 15:05Speaker 1: I said, no, I want you to go buy the food,
- 15:06Speaker 1: bounce and and hunt south. And I said, well, gee,
- 15:09Speaker 1: that's why I worked on them all year for you.
- 15:10Speaker 1: I want you to get out hunting and I want
- 15:12Speaker 1: you to get the big mature here. And that's when
- 15:14Speaker 1: you said, but Dad, you don't understand this is this
- 15:16Speaker 1: is different for me. And you went through what you
- 15:18Speaker 1: just talked about, and I kind of the word I
- 15:21Speaker 1: used and I thought I had was kind of an
- 15:23Speaker 1: intermission for you, you know, UM, for us, this is
- 15:27Speaker 1: this is the peak of the season. Right, the rightful
- 15:30Speaker 1: season is uh, you know, I went out in both
- 15:32Speaker 1: hundred and archery hundred a number of times, but rightfless
- 15:35Speaker 1: season is this, That's the that's the pinnacle of the
- 15:38Speaker 1: season for us. It's your intermission and that's kind of
- 15:43Speaker 1: that's kind of a little bit of an insight for me.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Um And and yeah, that's really pretty cool that you
- 15:51Speaker 1: don't think of the cabin that way in the camaraderie
- 15:53Speaker 1: that we have, and I'm very thankful for that. To me,
- 15:56Speaker 1: it's the most important time of the year, not because
- 16:01Speaker 1: I'd love to get a big deer. You know, we
- 16:02Speaker 1: went through and I think they're probably going to talk
- 16:04Speaker 1: about the pictures we saw on the trail campra Man
- 16:07Speaker 1: I got excited about that. That was really cool because
- 16:09Speaker 1: we just have not seen that kind of evidence in
- 16:12Speaker 1: such a long time. To see it finally and see
- 16:14Speaker 1: the proofs of our labor and um see the benefits
- 16:17Speaker 1: of you know, the the management process that's going on
- 16:21Speaker 1: in Michigan finally start to come to fruition, that was
- 16:23Speaker 1: really exciting. But to be there with you is the
- 16:27Speaker 1: single most important part of deer hunting camp for me. Yeah,
- 16:31Speaker 1: and you're right, it was. It was encouraging to see, yes,
- 16:36Speaker 1: which had our trail cameras, we have more, you know,
- 16:40Speaker 1: relatively mature bucks on camera, more consistently than ever before.
- 16:44Speaker 1: I think there's at least three Bucks that might be
- 16:46Speaker 1: three year older, um, which is a big deal up there,
- 16:49Speaker 1: and we've never had that and just the how often
- 16:52Speaker 1: they showed up in the past. We've had some mature
- 16:54Speaker 1: Bucks show up over the last four years since we
- 16:56Speaker 1: started doing some improvements and started running trail cameras. As
- 16:59Speaker 1: you know, dead we've had a mature Bucks show up
- 17:03Speaker 1: or to show up most years now a time or
- 17:06Speaker 1: two on camera. But this year there's deer that are
- 17:09Speaker 1: showing up weekly daily, um off down and in daylight.
- 17:13Speaker 1: So that's exciting. Now, we didn't see him while we
- 17:15Speaker 1: were out there hunting, but I think that's more a
- 17:18Speaker 1: product a product of we just haven't had a lot
- 17:21Speaker 1: of time to spend up there this year, and and
- 17:23Speaker 1: then you know, tactical stuff, but but it's it's so
- 17:27Speaker 1: encouraging just to know they're up there and that some
- 17:29Speaker 1: of the things we're doing or helping some uh. And
- 17:32Speaker 1: it's you know, as we talked about this spring, I
- 17:34Speaker 1: think it gives me hope for the future when we
- 17:37Speaker 1: start bringing Everett up and Soun number two, when he
- 17:40Speaker 1: starts coming up and Josh is Soun Wade and and
- 17:43Speaker 1: all that. So, man, it's it's good to see you
- 17:47Speaker 1: talked about the importance of us getting a hunt together,
- 17:52Speaker 1: and now we haven't got to do that a whole
- 17:53Speaker 1: lot over the years since you know as a kid,
- 17:56Speaker 1: we got a unique opportunity to do that. Though earlier
- 18:00Speaker 1: in November on the Back forty, you came down and
- 18:03Speaker 1: hunted on the Back forty for a couple of days. Um,
- 18:06Speaker 1: we haven't talked about on the podcast. You wanna give
- 18:08Speaker 1: us a quick, uh story of of what that was
- 18:12Speaker 1: like for you. So you you came down and hunted
- 18:13Speaker 1: our new Back forty farm. It was bow season, it
- 18:16Speaker 1: was November seventh and eighth. I think, Um, I was
- 18:20Speaker 1: super excited to get you out because you've never really
- 18:22Speaker 1: been able to hunt a good area during bow season
- 18:25Speaker 1: during the peak of the rut. So I had these
- 18:27Speaker 1: hopes that we're going to see all sorts of activity
- 18:29Speaker 1: and you know you're gonna see a big buck and
- 18:31Speaker 1: get a chance at your biggest buck ever. Um, that
- 18:34Speaker 1: was kind of how I thought it was gonna go down.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Enter the scene on the night of November six, the
- 18:40Speaker 1: arriving camp. What do you think about it? What what
- 18:43Speaker 1: stood out to you from that hunt? Well, other than
- 18:48Speaker 1: the sausage being made, that was that was kind of
- 18:50Speaker 1: a trip by that. You by that you mean getting
- 18:54Speaker 1: to see how we produced the show. Yeah, yeah, that
- 18:57Speaker 1: was really fascinating. That was really interesting to see all
- 18:59Speaker 1: that go was into what what you and everybody does
- 19:02Speaker 1: and how exciting that is and and you know, it's
- 19:05Speaker 1: just kind of neat, especially for me because you know,
- 19:07Speaker 1: obviously I listened to the podcast all the time just
- 19:10Speaker 1: to kind of get a feeling for what goes on
- 19:11Speaker 1: there at camp and what goes into everything you guys do.
- 19:14Speaker 1: It was pretty fascinating for me. But you know, when
- 19:17Speaker 1: we went out to the blind Um Thursday morning and
- 19:21Speaker 1: then you know, subsequently Thursday afternoon and then Friday, a
- 19:25Speaker 1: couple of things, I guess just I mean, you know
- 19:28Speaker 1: for me that I almost choke up when I think about, uh,
- 19:32Speaker 1: you know, youth is wasted on the young. And if
- 19:35Speaker 1: I had known when I was thirty years old, when
- 19:38Speaker 1: I know now and uh, and you and I talked
- 19:40Speaker 1: about this all the time. Mark, you know that that
- 19:42Speaker 1: time when your son's in that blind with you, Um,
- 19:46Speaker 1: next year, year after that, whatever, you're gonna look back
- 19:49Speaker 1: on over the next forty years as the best times
- 19:52Speaker 1: of your life. And uh, that's the way I felt
- 19:55Speaker 1: when you and I were in the blind, even with
- 19:57Speaker 1: cameraman behind it. I mean, I still I was like, Wow,
- 19:59Speaker 1: this is really cool. Man. I got a chance to
- 20:02Speaker 1: do something and probably I probably thought I would never
- 20:04Speaker 1: be able to do again. And uh, it was just
- 20:08Speaker 1: so cool being there with you and and you know,
- 20:11Speaker 1: uh and kind of like I said, I mean, it
- 20:13Speaker 1: really was fascinating for me to be able to see
- 20:15Speaker 1: kind of what you go through and what you do
- 20:17Speaker 1: and kind of preparation. And and although you and I
- 20:20Speaker 1: hunted or never quite like that, Um, that was really
- 20:24Speaker 1: pretty cool. I really enjoyed it. And and yeah, I
- 20:26Speaker 1: know we didn't see real big deer, but I did
- 20:28Speaker 1: get a chance to see several deer and there was
- 20:30Speaker 1: a nice at least for general open standards, um, you know,
- 20:34Speaker 1: fairly decent five point And uh, it was my choice
- 20:38Speaker 1: not to shoot it. I was really tempted. I still
- 20:40Speaker 1: wonder whether I should or not but but just being
- 20:44Speaker 1: able to scope the deer, watching as it worked through
- 20:46Speaker 1: the field. Um, you and I chatting and talking about
- 20:49Speaker 1: you know, all that excitement, all the the adrenaline rushing
- 20:55Speaker 1: through you know, my veins, and thinking about that and
- 20:57Speaker 1: knowing that if I had there, that I would have
- 21:01Speaker 1: been there with you to to shoot and and find
- 21:04Speaker 1: and and you know either when we had that experience together, Um,
- 21:08Speaker 1: it was a really neat couple of days. So when
- 21:12Speaker 1: that we're sitting there together, it's the first evening and
- 21:16Speaker 1: it's getting to be towards the last I don't know, hour,
- 21:18Speaker 1: half hour of the day something like that, and we
- 21:21Speaker 1: hear this big grunt behind us. Remember that, Um, so
- 21:26Speaker 1: there was a there was a buck behind us. And
- 21:27Speaker 1: you know what, I got to think, And have you
- 21:29Speaker 1: ever heard a buck grunt in the while before? Because
- 21:31Speaker 1: I know I never heard one up a Kendra over
- 21:33Speaker 1: my whole life, and I can't remember ever hearing one
- 21:35Speaker 1: when we hunted behind the house. No. No, the only
- 21:38Speaker 1: buck frount I think I've ever heard is you. So
- 21:43Speaker 1: that's that's actually really cool. Like I remember, it wasn't
- 21:46Speaker 1: until I started like going to other states that I
- 21:48Speaker 1: started you know, hearing buck vocalizations that were real. Um,
- 21:53Speaker 1: so that's pretty cool. You have to hear that. Um,
- 21:56Speaker 1: it was actually I recognize it. So you said there
- 21:59Speaker 1: was a buck frount and and I heard it, but
- 22:01Speaker 1: I didn't realize that's what it was. That's that's how
- 22:03Speaker 1: rare that is in my experience to heart. So yeah,
- 22:08Speaker 1: it was really exciting to hear that, and then of
- 22:10Speaker 1: course getting ready and hoping that he was gonna because
- 22:12Speaker 1: it was behind us, like he said, and hoping he
- 22:14Speaker 1: was going to walk around to the last of us
- 22:16Speaker 1: and get a good shot. And um, you know that
- 22:19Speaker 1: that enthusiasm or that anticipation was was was great. Yeah,
- 22:24Speaker 1: and then that buck comes topping out over the hill
- 22:26Speaker 1: in front of us, and like, yeah, there's a buck,
- 22:28Speaker 1: there's a coming up. How you handled it like a champ?
- 22:32Speaker 1: I couldn't tell you were you were excited? But were
- 22:34Speaker 1: you pretty amped up when that buck was coming in?
- 22:36Speaker 1: I was. I was, because, like he said, he came
- 22:38Speaker 1: right over the hill and it was it was a
- 22:40Speaker 1: port It was a portrait picture, right. He was coming
- 22:45Speaker 1: right at his antlers. Even though they were only five point,
- 22:48Speaker 1: that was a pretty big five point. He looked he
- 22:50Speaker 1: looked like a bigger deer than what he actually was
- 22:53Speaker 1: as he got down. And so seeing this deer on
- 22:55Speaker 1: top of the hill coming down, I'm getting excited, one
- 22:59Speaker 1: of the class one, and I'm pot again the black
- 23:02Speaker 1: binoculars first, and then the crossbow of UM scope on
- 23:06Speaker 1: him next, and just Washington come on down. And that's
- 23:09Speaker 1: when I was debating back and forth. I mean I
- 23:11Speaker 1: could have shot him as he was coming down the hill, um,
- 23:14Speaker 1: and certainly when he was turning broadside to us. I
- 23:16Speaker 1: had a number of times when it was a good shock. Um.
- 23:19Speaker 1: And I still, you know, going to my internal debate.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Should I have shot that deer and not um, it
- 23:24Speaker 1: would have been venice amount of table, right, and uh
- 23:28Speaker 1: we didn't. So. But on the other hand, hopefully that
- 23:31Speaker 1: that will be a a bigger, more mature deer next year,
- 23:36Speaker 1: and and you and I would get a chance, maybe
- 23:38Speaker 1: without of it, to take another crack at next year. Yeah,
- 23:41Speaker 1: that would be cool. It made for a fun evening,
- 23:43Speaker 1: that's for sure. That was a fun experience. And as
- 23:47Speaker 1: we said many times, I wish that it had been
- 23:50Speaker 1: a more action packed deer hunt. Just the activity is
- 23:53Speaker 1: not like I was hoping and we got to work
- 23:56Speaker 1: cut out for us to try to improve things out there.
- 23:58Speaker 1: But you know, it comes back to the whole moral
- 24:01Speaker 1: of the gun season story, which is, you know, all
- 24:05Speaker 1: of this getting a hunt together up north with the
- 24:07Speaker 1: family and friends, getting a hunt with you at the
- 24:08Speaker 1: back ford the other day. Uh, it reminds me of
- 24:12Speaker 1: the things that are more important than shooting a deer.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Um and that. Uh that's a good thing to get
- 24:18Speaker 1: reminded of every once in a while. Yeah, it is.
- 24:20Speaker 1: You know, I think that's right on Mark, you know,
- 24:23Speaker 1: for me, I know for you, you were disappointed. I
- 24:27Speaker 1: was absolutely thrilled. And uh, and they're kind of you know,
- 24:33Speaker 1: they're kind of competing feelings, right because I was there
- 24:36Speaker 1: with you, because I was I was seeing deer and
- 24:40Speaker 1: and and being in this situation where there was a
- 24:43Speaker 1: good possibility that nice big buck was going to walk
- 24:45Speaker 1: in front, and I was it was going to be
- 24:47Speaker 1: it was gonna have an opportunity to shoot that deer
- 24:50Speaker 1: with you. Um, that meant more to me than anything else.
- 24:55Speaker 1: So I had a ball. I'm glad you still had fun.
- 24:59Speaker 1: That was very cool and hopefully we'll have some more
- 25:02Speaker 1: chances to do something like that in the future. Um,
- 25:05Speaker 1: I gotta ask you one more question while I got you,
- 25:07Speaker 1: because we're gonna keep this kind of short. But um,
- 25:11Speaker 1: in four days from the time this podcast drops. Yeah,
- 25:15Speaker 1: three or three or four days from when this podcast drops,
- 25:18Speaker 1: my brand new book, my first book ever, That Wild Country,
- 25:24Speaker 1: an epic journey through the past, present, and future of
- 25:27Speaker 1: America's public lands that will be officially released to the
- 25:30Speaker 1: world on Sunday, December one. You got an early copy
- 25:36Speaker 1: of the book and the audio book before anyone can
- 25:39Speaker 1: get the audio book. Um, do you have any thoughts
- 25:43Speaker 1: you want to share? I didn't coach you on this,
- 25:45Speaker 1: I didn't tell you what to say, so you are
- 25:47Speaker 1: You are welcome to say whatever you want to say.
- 25:49Speaker 1: If you hated it, you can tell me what do
- 25:52Speaker 1: you think about the book and is it worth anybody
- 25:54Speaker 1: picking it up? Yeah, so admittedly I'm biased, right, but
- 25:58Speaker 1: I gotta tell you so. Um. You know your audience
- 26:01Speaker 1: probably knows that I'm visually impaired. Um, So I tend
- 26:04Speaker 1: to listen to a lot of audiobooks. I read books
- 26:07Speaker 1: as well, but I like to read audio books because
- 26:09Speaker 1: they allowed me to multitask and do different things in
- 26:12Speaker 1: the cistence. I own probably two fifty audio books, UM,
- 26:18Speaker 1: because I've been a member of you know, audio book
- 26:20Speaker 1: services for twenty years or so, so I kind of
- 26:24Speaker 1: have a good feeling for good narrators and bad narrators,
- 26:27Speaker 1: and I typically like books where the author narrates this book, UM.
- 26:31Speaker 1: So I got your audiobook. So I've got the booth,
- 26:33Speaker 1: the book book, and the and the audio version of
- 26:36Speaker 1: it UM and have read the book portions of the book,
- 26:40Speaker 1: but I really wanted to get the audio version and
- 26:43Speaker 1: listen to that because I just my experience with with
- 26:45Speaker 1: authors and how that just makes a totally big difference.
- 26:49Speaker 1: And it absolutely did so when I listened to the
- 26:52Speaker 1: audio version of it UM and again recognized I'm biased,
- 26:58Speaker 1: but it was the one of the very best narrated
- 27:03Speaker 1: audio books I've ever listened to. And I think Mark,
- 27:06Speaker 1: because of your your passion for the topic. First of all,
- 27:10Speaker 1: I think that it's just a very well written book
- 27:12Speaker 1: with lots of great information, and some of it's very personal.
- 27:15Speaker 1: There's some very subspections of the book that are very
- 27:19Speaker 1: almost personally embarrassing to me, UM in the sense that
- 27:23Speaker 1: they're showing an aspect of you know, who I am
- 27:26Speaker 1: and what we did and when we went sort of
- 27:27Speaker 1: pictured Rocks trip that uh, you know. On the other hand,
- 27:31Speaker 1: I think it was done in a very loving, um
- 27:34Speaker 1: respectful way, and you did that throughout the whole book.
- 27:37Speaker 1: I mean it was just really well, a really interesting
- 27:41Speaker 1: blend of storyte storytelling and historical inter weaving those facts
- 27:47Speaker 1: and ideas and thoughts in a in a manner that
- 27:50Speaker 1: was very thought provoking for me. And going back to
- 27:54Speaker 1: the narration. So what what I have told people is
- 27:58Speaker 1: if you possibly can do it at the dal version
- 28:00Speaker 1: of it, whether it's you know, through one of the
- 28:02Speaker 1: services or a CD or whatever, because it's it's in
- 28:06Speaker 1: my opinion, it's it's exponentially better than even the great
- 28:12Speaker 1: book that it is in print because you hear your
- 28:16Speaker 1: your your passion for public land preservation, you hear your
- 28:21Speaker 1: compassion and and thoughtfulness around the people who went on
- 28:25Speaker 1: these adventures with you. It just all came through in
- 28:27Speaker 1: the audiobook. So I'll stop there, I know, gramble, but
- 28:31Speaker 1: but yeah, you get as I did ask, and you know,
- 28:35Speaker 1: it is kind of self serving right now. If you
- 28:37Speaker 1: if you gave the wrong answer, then it might have
- 28:40Speaker 1: been an issue. But you've been you you've been embarrassing
- 28:44Speaker 1: me though in front of like other people in public
- 28:46Speaker 1: when you start gushing about, like how your son about
- 28:48Speaker 1: this book, and I'm always like, Dad, don't go over
- 28:51Speaker 1: the top with it. I really appreciate it, but you know,
- 28:54Speaker 1: let's let's let's keep it mild. But right now, hey,
- 28:57Speaker 1: go for it away. So it doesn't help the fact
- 29:01Speaker 1: that I bought fifteen copies already ten copies because I'm
- 29:05Speaker 1: giving way to everybody I know the process that is absurd,
- 29:09Speaker 1: but thank you. I appreciate. Yeah. But but the reason
- 29:19Speaker 1: I started out with the Wold g I've listened to
- 29:22Speaker 1: a two D fifty bucks over the course of twenty
- 29:23Speaker 1: years blah blah blah, is because I think that gives
- 29:26Speaker 1: me some credibility in terms of knowing good narrators and
- 29:30Speaker 1: people who could really tell a story from people who
- 29:33Speaker 1: just blindly go through and tell their story, you know.
- 29:37Speaker 1: And you did a phenomenal job. I quite honestly, it's
- 29:40Speaker 1: the best audiobook I've ever listened to. It. Well, thank
- 29:43Speaker 1: you for saying that, even though it might be biased,
- 29:45Speaker 1: I do appreciate it. I'm glad you're liking it. I'm
- 29:48Speaker 1: glad that you liked the chapters that were written about
- 29:50Speaker 1: our trip together, UM and I haven't talked about the
- 29:53Speaker 1: book too much on the podcast yet, and I'm going
- 29:55Speaker 1: to talk about it more in some future episodes in detail.
- 29:58Speaker 1: But I do want to give you guys just a
- 30:00Speaker 1: heads up a little bit more about what is in
- 30:03Speaker 1: store within this book. It is the story of the
- 30:06Speaker 1: history of our public lands and across the country and
- 30:10Speaker 1: what's happening to them right now and what we might
- 30:12Speaker 1: need to be thinking about in the future to keep
- 30:14Speaker 1: them around. And I share all that information, UM through
- 30:19Speaker 1: the series of three series of my own public land adventures.
- 30:23Speaker 1: So things that you if you've listened to this podcast
- 30:25Speaker 1: for a while, uh, you know that I care about
- 30:27Speaker 1: public lands. You know that I've been following this current
- 30:30Speaker 1: controversy around them that's been taking place over the last
- 30:32Speaker 1: five years or so. And you know that I've spent
- 30:35Speaker 1: a lot of time out there doing these things, seeing
- 30:38Speaker 1: these these wilderness areas and national parks and national forests
- 30:42Speaker 1: and whatnot. So I tried to weave my own story
- 30:46Speaker 1: of trying to learn about these places. I tried to
- 30:48Speaker 1: weave that through a series of trips within those places.
- 30:52Speaker 1: So I went backpacking Yellowstone National Park with my wife.
- 30:56Speaker 1: I went shed hunting with further in western North Dakota
- 31:00Speaker 1: and we explored Theodore Roosevelt National Park. I went pack
- 31:03Speaker 1: rafting and fly fishing in the Bob Marshall Wilderness of
- 31:06Speaker 1: Montana with my buddy Andy Bradley, who was on that
- 31:09Speaker 1: Boundary Waters hunt with me. Recently. We went and I
- 31:13Speaker 1: did some camping and hiking with my wife. I caribou
- 31:17Speaker 1: hunted in Alaska. UM went on a bear hunt with
- 31:20Speaker 1: Randy Newburgh in Montana. A whole series of different things
- 31:23Speaker 1: like that, and then the backpacking trip I took with
- 31:25Speaker 1: you and my sister in pictured Rocks. All those personal
- 31:30Speaker 1: experiences I hoped would flesh out and engage people as
- 31:35Speaker 1: we learned about these places along the way. So that's
- 31:38Speaker 1: the books about. I poured my heart and soul into it. UM.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Like I mentioned, we'll talk a lot more about it
- 31:43Speaker 1: over the next couple of weeks as the book is
- 31:45Speaker 1: released here. UM, But it would and I don't do
- 31:49Speaker 1: this often. I don't know if I've ever done this
- 31:51Speaker 1: really ever on the podcast before. I'm gonna do it
- 31:53Speaker 1: a couple of times this month, UM, I have poured
- 31:58Speaker 1: myself into this podcast, in this audience, over the last
- 32:02Speaker 1: ten years of Wired to Hunt, in the last uh
- 32:06Speaker 1: five years with the Wired Hunt podcast, I hope I've
- 32:09Speaker 1: given you guys a lot of value. I hope I've
- 32:12Speaker 1: been able to entertain you and inform you and inspire you.
- 32:17Speaker 1: And that is what I have tried to do now
- 32:19Speaker 1: with this book. If if anything I've done has helped
- 32:23Speaker 1: you along the way, or inspired you, or helps you
- 32:26Speaker 1: shoot a deer or whatever might be, if you've ever
- 32:28Speaker 1: thought to yourself, I would love to give Mark a
- 32:31Speaker 1: high five or hand or a handshake, or support who
- 32:34Speaker 1: in some way. This is the best way you could
- 32:36Speaker 1: ever support me. Please purchase a copy of That Wild Country.
- 32:40Speaker 1: It would mean the world to me. This is a
- 32:42Speaker 1: dream come true to have been able to write this book.
- 32:45Speaker 1: And uh, I really am hoping I get a chance
- 32:48Speaker 1: to write some more. And you buying a copy of
- 32:50Speaker 1: this book or the audiobook, or buying one for a
- 32:52Speaker 1: friend or family member, that would help that be possible.
- 32:57Speaker 1: So that's my plug for That Wild Country. This week.
- 33:00Speaker 1: I'll give you a couple more as we lead into Christmas.
- 33:03Speaker 1: But um, thank you everyone for considering the book, and
- 33:06Speaker 1: thank you Dad for so shamelessly plugging the hell out
- 33:10Speaker 1: of it. Hey, you can't plug your son's book. I
- 33:16Speaker 1: guess that's right. I guess that's right. And thanks Dad
- 33:19Speaker 1: for for coming on here and helping me introduce this episode.
- 33:22Speaker 1: It's I'm glad we could talk about this because because
- 33:25Speaker 1: this is that there's there's two parts to gun hunting
- 33:27Speaker 1: for me. One is how to do it and the
- 33:28Speaker 1: gear to do it, and the other parts about the
- 33:30Speaker 1: people and the memories and the places. And I couldn't
- 33:34Speaker 1: think of anyone better talk about that part with than you.
- 33:37Speaker 1: So thanks for joining me, Thank you, thank you for
- 33:39Speaker 1: having me all right here with me now on the
- 33:43Speaker 1: line is Adam Weatherby and Kevin Wilkerson. How are you guys,
- 33:48Speaker 1: good doing well? Thanks for having us on. Hey, it's
- 33:51Speaker 1: it's my pleasure. I appreciate you getting up bright and
- 33:54Speaker 1: early starting the day straight off of the podcast. I
- 33:57Speaker 1: hope you've got some coffee at least, I know isn't
- 34:00Speaker 1: the best way. I'm on my second YETI full, so
- 34:04Speaker 1: I'm good. I'm a little weird. I don't drink coffee,
- 34:07Speaker 1: which always throws people off, but it's just because I
- 34:09Speaker 1: never have. So it's actually easy when when we go hunting,
- 34:13Speaker 1: Kevin doesn't eat breakfast and he doesn't drink coffee. So
- 34:17Speaker 1: I'm up usually a half hour before him, in the
- 34:19Speaker 1: tent or wherever, trying to get going. He just rolls out,
- 34:22Speaker 1: puts on his boots, and starts hiking. How do you function?
- 34:25Speaker 1: That's incredible? Yeah, I don't really know. Actually, well about nine,
- 34:30Speaker 1: he usually gets really angry. Yeah, I get really angry
- 34:33Speaker 1: around a little breakfast bar, and then I just keep going.
- 34:36Speaker 1: But it was first, the first couple of our adventures.
- 34:39Speaker 1: I could tell Adam was a little worried about me
- 34:41Speaker 1: because he was like, you know, getting ready and getting coffee,
- 34:44Speaker 1: and you know, I was just kind of like sitting there,
- 34:46Speaker 1: and I think he thought that I was just lazy.
- 34:49Speaker 1: He were lazy. No, I'm ready to go. That's all right. Well,
- 34:55Speaker 1: before we go too far, I guess I introduced the
- 34:58Speaker 1: audience to you really brief myself. But I'd love to
- 35:01Speaker 1: hear from you yourselves, just a little bit of a
- 35:03Speaker 1: cliff notes intro to to your story for each of you.
- 35:07Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe, Adam, do you want to lead
- 35:09Speaker 1: us off there? Sure sounds good. Yeah, I'm Adam Weatherby
- 35:14Speaker 1: Um CEO of weather Be Inc. Company my grandpa started
- 35:17Speaker 1: back in n in southern California. So I'm the third
- 35:22Speaker 1: generation leader of this firearms business, rifle, shotguns and ammunition.
- 35:27Speaker 1: Passionate outdoorsman and hunter. Father, A two husband to a
- 35:31Speaker 1: pretty hot wife that runs this company with me, and
- 35:34Speaker 1: uh so I get, yeah, the opportunity to what we
- 35:38Speaker 1: believe is make the world's finest firearms. I get to
- 35:41Speaker 1: carry that on being an American family owned business. Moved
- 35:45Speaker 1: our company out here to share it in Wyoming. Uh
- 35:48Speaker 1: this past year, which has been a huge move, built
- 35:51Speaker 1: a new facility. So we're just south of you guys,
- 35:54Speaker 1: uh here across the border into northern Wyoming and uh
- 35:58Speaker 1: absolutely loving it. That's that's a pretty incredible story from
- 36:01Speaker 1: everything I've heard about that move. Uh, what about you, Kevin?
- 36:05Speaker 1: I want, I do want to dive back into a
- 36:07Speaker 1: little bit more about the story of Weatherby. But but Kevin,
- 36:09Speaker 1: let's hear yours first two. Yeah. I mean, I don't
- 36:11Speaker 1: know how I'm gonna follow up Adam here, but keep
- 36:14Speaker 1: Kevin Wilkerson. I get to hang out here and hunt
- 36:17Speaker 1: with Adam. No. Uh Um, I moved out here when
- 36:21Speaker 1: when Weatherby decided to move from California to Wyoming. I've
- 36:24Speaker 1: been a hunter in my whole life and actually primarily
- 36:27Speaker 1: grew up hunting over in Tennessee and Arkansas and Indiana
- 36:31Speaker 1: and Kentucky for white tails and UM started as I
- 36:34Speaker 1: as I got into my college years, wanting to come
- 36:36Speaker 1: out west and started doing that. And then when weather
- 36:38Speaker 1: Be decided to move out to Wyoming, uh, it looked
- 36:41Speaker 1: like a perfect opportunity. I've worked UM for almost a
- 36:45Speaker 1: decade now, I think in the outdoor industry and UM
- 36:49Speaker 1: all mainly in hunting hunting brands, and so this just
- 36:52Speaker 1: seemed like a great fit for me. And uh, I'm
- 36:55Speaker 1: happy to be at Weatherby. I think there's a lot
- 36:58Speaker 1: going on here that people can get behind. And I also, uh,
- 37:02Speaker 1: you know, I love working for the weather Be family,
- 37:05Speaker 1: Adam and Brendy. Couldn't ask for better people to work for.
- 37:07Speaker 1: And uh we have a great time out in here
- 37:09Speaker 1: in Wyoming so far. So UM it's really not as
- 37:13Speaker 1: cool as adam story, but that is my story. So
- 37:16Speaker 1: me and my wife moved out here. I have a
- 37:17Speaker 1: wife and we have a dog, no kids, and uh,
- 37:22Speaker 1: you know, just kind of grew up on white tails
- 37:23Speaker 1: out east, so well, I gotta believe your story there
- 37:27Speaker 1: of moving out to Wyoming, having that having that dream
- 37:31Speaker 1: living in the midwest of the South, and then eventually
- 37:33Speaker 1: wanting to move out there. That's something that a lot
- 37:35Speaker 1: of people can relate to, UM and and that's something
- 37:39Speaker 1: I gotta believe has helped And maybe not, but I'm curious, Adam,
- 37:42Speaker 1: if that has helped you guys that weather Be moving
- 37:45Speaker 1: to Wyoming, UM, because that rocky mountain interior west has
- 37:50Speaker 1: such a draw for so many outdoors men and women.
- 37:52Speaker 1: What was that like, What's what does that move mean
- 37:54Speaker 1: for you guys? Why did you guys decide to shift
- 37:56Speaker 1: from California to Wyoming? What's that mean for you guys
- 37:59Speaker 1: to come enny in a brand? Yeah, No, it's it's huge.
- 38:02Speaker 1: I think, you know, ultimately, it represents our future. I
- 38:05Speaker 1: think I often have said here this past year that
- 38:08Speaker 1: California represents a rich history and heritage, my grandfather and
- 38:13Speaker 1: my father running it, a lot of great people working
- 38:16Speaker 1: for him over the years. Wyoming really represents a bright
- 38:19Speaker 1: future for weather be UM. You know, we have UM.
- 38:23Speaker 1: You know, about eighty percent of our workforce is new
- 38:25Speaker 1: here in the past year year and a half. So
- 38:27Speaker 1: it's it's a pretty incredible new beginnings of it. Like
- 38:30Speaker 1: you said, I mean we're right here at the foot
- 38:33Speaker 1: of the Big Horn Mountains. You know, I I tagged Antelope, Muley,
- 38:38Speaker 1: an Elk, you know, all well, mountain Lion, all right
- 38:42Speaker 1: here in Wyoming this year. Um, our employees are out
- 38:45Speaker 1: outdoors all the time. So I think it's it's authentically
- 38:49Speaker 1: you know who we are. We've been We're a hunting rifle.
- 38:52Speaker 1: We sell a ton of guns too, you know, places
- 38:55Speaker 1: east to here and south to here. And so a
- 38:57Speaker 1: lot of folks, even like Kevin that grew up UM
- 39:00Speaker 1: maybe either wanting to come west or started to but um,
- 39:03Speaker 1: you know we so so we're a national company. But
- 39:06Speaker 1: but our heart has always been and kind of just
- 39:08Speaker 1: even our location, who we are has been in the West,
- 39:11Speaker 1: and so obviously moved to Wyoming is huge. It was
- 39:13Speaker 1: a business move as well. I mean from taxes and regulations,
- 39:18Speaker 1: costa living, um, political climate everything in California that kind
- 39:22Speaker 1: of shoot us out of there, and you know, kind
- 39:24Speaker 1: of often said we we kind of ran as far
- 39:27Speaker 1: away from California as we could and we ended up
- 39:30Speaker 1: and shared in Wyoming at the far other end of
- 39:32Speaker 1: the spectrum, it's been it's been very very good for us. Um.
- 39:36Speaker 1: I mean it's it's been a ton of work. They're
- 39:38Speaker 1: gonna lie. Um. We've got a great team, UM, some
- 39:41Speaker 1: sweet new things we're working on, a great new facility. Uh,
- 39:45Speaker 1: some great new partnerships like with you folks. So it's
- 39:47Speaker 1: it's Uh, it's an exciting time for weather, be for sure.
- 39:50Speaker 1: And the move really was a catalyst for a lot
- 39:52Speaker 1: of that. Yeah, it sounds like you've been fawful busy
- 39:56Speaker 1: with all those tags you filled this year in Wyoming. Um,
- 39:58Speaker 1: but I have started heading out west too. I've I've
- 40:02Speaker 1: done a lot of the big game as well, but
- 40:04Speaker 1: I've also been tinkering with white tail hunting out there.
- 40:07Speaker 1: I've hunted in oh Montana, North Dakota, and Nebraska, some
- 40:12Speaker 1: of those western states and found this some pretty damn
- 40:15Speaker 1: good white tails out there. Uh, what's the Wyoming story?
- 40:19Speaker 1: Can you give me like a white tail scouting report?
- 40:21Speaker 1: I'll keep this one off air. This is just this
- 40:23Speaker 1: is just for me. I want the intel. Get Yeah,
- 40:26Speaker 1: you get on air, because it's not enough people out
- 40:29Speaker 1: here shooting white tails. Really. I mean, the weird thing
- 40:32Speaker 1: about Wyoming is well not weird. But when you buy
- 40:36Speaker 1: a deer tag, obviously you have to if you want
- 40:38Speaker 1: to hunted a good a draw unit, you're gonna have
- 40:41Speaker 1: to put in points or you're gonna have to get
- 40:43Speaker 1: lucky and get a random draw um as a nonresident.
- 40:46Speaker 1: But it's an either sex tag. It's not neither sex tag.
- 40:50Speaker 1: It's an either meal deer or war or white tail
- 40:53Speaker 1: tag when you get your tag. So for the most part,
- 40:56Speaker 1: people coming out to Wyoming, especially from out east or
- 40:59Speaker 1: more than likely looking for a mule here, but the
- 41:02Speaker 1: white tails don't really uh, get a lot of attention.
- 41:05Speaker 1: It's actually it's actually a funny little thing because you know,
- 41:09Speaker 1: me coming from out east, you would pass fields, you
- 41:12Speaker 1: know Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, whatever, uh, you know, see like
- 41:15Speaker 1: twenty deer in the field. You'd be like, oh man,
- 41:17Speaker 1: look at those deer. You know a d deer. Oh wow,
- 41:19Speaker 1: that's a lot of deer around here. You pass the
- 41:21Speaker 1: field and you'll see hundreds and hundreds of white tails
- 41:26Speaker 1: and you're like, whoa, that's different. They are very heavy
- 41:30Speaker 1: private land. The white tails is compared to you know,
- 41:33Speaker 1: your mule deer, elk and a lot of other things
- 41:35Speaker 1: you can find on public it's it's definitely a lot
- 41:37Speaker 1: harder because they are you know, in the in the
- 41:39Speaker 1: hay fields and irrigated areas and those different things. Like
- 41:43Speaker 1: I live. I live out on a little bit acreage,
- 41:46Speaker 1: and I have muleed here on my properly property exclusively. Uh,
- 41:52Speaker 1: once in a great while a white tail wander up.
- 41:54Speaker 1: I am probably at most a half mile from our
- 41:57Speaker 1: creek to which all those properties have white and and
- 42:02Speaker 1: I might see two white tail a year. Well, I
- 42:06Speaker 1: lived here for a year and a half. I'm talking
- 42:07Speaker 1: like I'm a local expert. But in the last year
- 42:10Speaker 1: that rarely come up. And so you have this kind
- 42:13Speaker 1: of weird mix of you'll drive by if you're driving
- 42:16Speaker 1: and you're driving by the creek beds, and there's a
- 42:18Speaker 1: bunch of white tail and people's fields, and then you
- 42:21Speaker 1: kind of come up and maybe there's a little state
- 42:22Speaker 1: chunk of land on the right, and there's a bunch
- 42:24Speaker 1: of mule deer antelope. And so it's really kind of
- 42:27Speaker 1: a weird thing that people untill they're kind of here,
- 42:29Speaker 1: can't can't really figure out. I mean, they're not monsters
- 42:33Speaker 1: in relation to a lot of things you're probably used to, uh,
- 42:36Speaker 1: you know, easy to hear for sure, but at least
- 42:39Speaker 1: from my experience, and I don't know if it's the
- 42:41Speaker 1: same in Wyoming, but I'm guessing it might be. You
- 42:44Speaker 1: kind of alluded to it. It's the fact that a
- 42:45Speaker 1: lot of people in the West seem to ignore the
- 42:48Speaker 1: white tails. They just aren't quite as sexy as the
- 42:51Speaker 1: elk and the mule deer and everything else you can chase,
- 42:54Speaker 1: So they're a little bit under the radar for at
- 42:56Speaker 1: least local people. So when someone like me heads out
- 42:59Speaker 1: there will While there are some big deer in the Midwest,
- 43:01Speaker 1: of course, coming from Michigan, it's a little bit different here.
- 43:05Speaker 1: We don't get to see a lot of old deer.
- 43:06Speaker 1: So when I came out to Montana or North Dakota,
- 43:09Speaker 1: the number of mature bucks you see is just so
- 43:12Speaker 1: astronomically higher that I'm used to back home. That was
- 43:16Speaker 1: just a blast. I mean, you're not maybe maybe they're
- 43:18Speaker 1: not maybe boone and crack of bucks, but I love
- 43:21Speaker 1: just seeing If you see a four year old in
- 43:22Speaker 1: Michigan once a year, that's a great year. You see
- 43:26Speaker 1: four and a night. Some spots up hunt in Montana.
- 43:29Speaker 1: Oh for sure. No, No, there's they'll they'll be around,
- 43:31Speaker 1: especially if you're looking for mature deer. It's just that
- 43:34Speaker 1: you know, and and there's gonna be a lot of
- 43:36Speaker 1: people that probably disagree there's big deer here. But generally speaking,
- 43:40Speaker 1: in my opinion, consistently big deer white tail wise in
- 43:44Speaker 1: this specific areas. Generally I going to be on private land.
- 43:48Speaker 1: But you I mean, I know a lot of people
- 43:49Speaker 1: that shoot big, big deer um in a couple of
- 43:52Speaker 1: little pockets of public land here and there because they're
- 43:55Speaker 1: just kind of when they're they're they're there. But what
- 43:58Speaker 1: happens too is some guys don't want to use their
- 44:00Speaker 1: tag on white tail. It depends so some guys like
- 44:03Speaker 1: depends on the zone kind of where I hunt locally
- 44:05Speaker 1: around here. You know, my mule deer, Uh, it's just
- 44:08Speaker 1: the last two weeks October. You know, it goes through
- 44:11Speaker 1: the end of October, and basically you can kind of
- 44:13Speaker 1: just hold out for a good mulei and if you
- 44:16Speaker 1: don't end up shooting that mulei, you just November one,
- 44:19Speaker 1: you kind of transition to white tail um. Like myself,
- 44:22Speaker 1: my wife, my daughter all got a MULEI my son.
- 44:25Speaker 1: He's playing football which shout out shared and just won
- 44:29Speaker 1: the state championship football game, by the way, But uh yeah,
- 44:33Speaker 1: I like anybody cares, but we're pretty excited. Uh but
- 44:37Speaker 1: but I'm taking him out Saturday and we're gonna go
- 44:40Speaker 1: try to try to find a white tail buck on
- 44:42Speaker 1: some public land and walk around for a little bit. So,
- 44:45Speaker 1: you know, it's kind of it's kind of fun that
- 44:46Speaker 1: you have that either or type of thing. If you
- 44:49Speaker 1: see some see a mule here, that tickles your fancy
- 44:51Speaker 1: and that's awesome. And if not, the white tail season goes,
- 44:54Speaker 1: you know, quite a bit further here in this area. Anyways,
- 44:57Speaker 1: most of them go through novem Um. It really kind
- 45:00Speaker 1: of extends that time for for rifle. Yeah. So, speaking
- 45:04Speaker 1: of that shift, you talked about how a lot of
- 45:05Speaker 1: people are shifting locally where you're at too, thinking Okay,
- 45:08Speaker 1: now it's time to try to get a deer, get
- 45:10Speaker 1: a white tail if we have to fill that tag
- 45:12Speaker 1: with a gun. There's there's a similar shift happening and
- 45:15Speaker 1: a lot of other parts of the country kind of
- 45:17Speaker 1: around where I'm at, where our bow seasons are ending,
- 45:19Speaker 1: in our rifles seasons, or firearm seasons are beginning. UM,
- 45:23Speaker 1: so that's happening for me personally. I'm heading up to
- 45:25Speaker 1: my northern Michigan deer camp tomorrow for the first time
- 45:28Speaker 1: of the year for my rifle hunt. UM. A lot
- 45:31Speaker 1: of other folks are doing the same across all sorts
- 45:33Speaker 1: of parts of the country. So would that be the case? Um?
- 45:37Speaker 1: What I kind of want to talk about is is
- 45:39Speaker 1: that shift in in first how that shifts in your mind?
- 45:43Speaker 1: Would you, guys go and head out there for a
- 45:46Speaker 1: firearm harnt? I know, Kevin, you used to work in
- 45:48Speaker 1: the archery industry, so I'm sure you have been a
- 45:51Speaker 1: part of this too. Write your bow hunt, bow hunt,
- 45:53Speaker 1: bow hunt, and then all of a sudden you make
- 45:54Speaker 1: that shift and you pick up the gun. A flip
- 45:57Speaker 1: is switched in your mind and in your tactics and
- 45:59Speaker 1: in your gear and your setups. Uh. What comes to
- 46:03Speaker 1: mind for you guys? First off, when you head out
- 46:06Speaker 1: on that first hunt with a different type of weapon,
- 46:09Speaker 1: When you're shifting to deer hunting now with a firearm,
- 46:11Speaker 1: how does that change your mindset? Well, for me specifically,
- 46:15Speaker 1: even if it was where I grew up or even
- 46:18Speaker 1: out here, generally, when I'm hunting with the bow, obviously,
- 46:22Speaker 1: I'm wanting to get closer. So a lot of the time,
- 46:26Speaker 1: if I've not filled my tag, or if i have
- 46:28Speaker 1: multiple tags for that specific animal in that state, at
- 46:33Speaker 1: that point, I'll kind of know it. It makes it
- 46:36Speaker 1: a little bit easier when you pick up that rifle
- 46:38Speaker 1: because you're having to get so close. You know, for instance, uh,
- 46:42Speaker 1: mule deer this year out here. I know we're kind
- 46:44Speaker 1: of talking about autise, but just the experience I was
- 46:46Speaker 1: having to really get within sixty sevent yards of a
- 46:49Speaker 1: mule deer and I didn't make it happen. But when
- 46:50Speaker 1: rifle season started, I was like, why nowhere, I'm gonna
- 46:53Speaker 1: be like, you knew where you were going to be
- 46:55Speaker 1: with the rifle on a bipod looking at a specific area.
- 46:59Speaker 1: You know, either that or you have the opportunity if
- 47:01Speaker 1: you have multiple tags to to set up on a
- 47:03Speaker 1: different animal um and try to fill that second buck tag,
- 47:06Speaker 1: or you know if you're in that area that you
- 47:09Speaker 1: have multiple buck tags. But you know, really, I think
- 47:12Speaker 1: the biggest shift is the area that you're hunting UM.
- 47:16Speaker 1: When I pick up a rifle, I generally don't try
- 47:18Speaker 1: to I generally try not to go into that that
- 47:21Speaker 1: thick timber um, whether it be for white tails or
- 47:24Speaker 1: for um or for mule deer or anything like that.
- 47:28Speaker 1: I like to make sure I can see things because
- 47:32Speaker 1: that rifle is gonna allow me to get out there
- 47:33Speaker 1: and and put a good shot on an animal. Also
- 47:36Speaker 1: that I mean, obviously you got weather moving stuff around,
- 47:40Speaker 1: so i'd here. I mean we're at a four thousand
- 47:42Speaker 1: feet but if you could drop a pin, get to
- 47:46Speaker 1: Black Tooth or Cloud Peak that's at thirteen thousand feet
- 47:50Speaker 1: and that's twenty five miles from here, so and we're
- 47:53Speaker 1: at four thousands, so I mean, you know, we're right
- 47:54Speaker 1: at the base of the mountains. Uh So, I mean, Kevin,
- 47:57Speaker 1: you are up as high as ten thousand feet hunting
- 48:00Speaker 1: for elk uh with with your bow. I was as
- 48:04Speaker 1: down as low as five thousand feet, you know, hunting
- 48:07Speaker 1: for elk here during rifle um. So obviously you know
- 48:10Speaker 1: that weather just you know, weather pushes things around. So
- 48:13Speaker 1: there's a lot of considerations you know there as well,
- 48:15Speaker 1: especially when you're out here with the different elevations, things
- 48:18Speaker 1: are just really starting to starting to move around as
- 48:22Speaker 1: soon as rifle season starts. Speaking of that weather influence.
- 48:26Speaker 1: One of the things that as a bow hunter we
- 48:29Speaker 1: always have to obsess about is wind and wind direction.
- 48:32Speaker 1: What's the wind doing? How is that going to affect
- 48:34Speaker 1: how we can set up for a shot at a
- 48:36Speaker 1: deer within twenty yards or forty yards or whatever it is.
- 48:39Speaker 1: It's it's so crucial to everything you do. How do
- 48:42Speaker 1: you guys think about wind differently at all when you're
- 48:44Speaker 1: out there with your with your rifle. Do you disregard
- 48:47Speaker 1: it completely? Do you still think about it? Or you saying, hey,
- 48:51Speaker 1: you know what, it's just as important now as when
- 48:53Speaker 1: I was out there with arch quin. I think it's
- 48:56Speaker 1: just as important. Yeah, I mean, I mean, well, obviously
- 48:58Speaker 1: you have wind as far as uh you're not getting
- 49:01Speaker 1: sniffed out by the animal. And then really you have
- 49:04Speaker 1: then wind to consider as far as bullet drift, especially
- 49:07Speaker 1: out here and why I mean, it can get a
- 49:08Speaker 1: little breezy, but it uh it uh you know, and
- 49:14Speaker 1: and I guess it's a little shout out to our
- 49:16Speaker 1: cartridges and different things like that that the faster moving
- 49:19Speaker 1: bullet you have depending on your ballistic co fish and
- 49:22Speaker 1: different things of the actual bullet you're shooting. I think
- 49:25Speaker 1: people overthink wind when it comes to bullet drift. Uh,
- 49:29Speaker 1: it really starts to play in at much longer distances
- 49:32Speaker 1: wre of people probably are not hunting, and so um.
- 49:37Speaker 1: You know, with a lot of the kind of especially
- 49:39Speaker 1: the faster cartridges we have, the wind really isn't as
- 49:43Speaker 1: much of a factor. It's one of the you know,
- 49:45Speaker 1: the great reasons about getting a bullet moving fast is
- 49:47Speaker 1: is a you don't have as much drop and be
- 49:49Speaker 1: it's in the air for less time. Therefore, you know,
- 49:51Speaker 1: wind being less of an effect, you know on it.
- 49:54Speaker 1: I think people can overthink wind certainly when it when
- 49:57Speaker 1: it comes to bullet drift. So what is that range
- 49:59Speaker 1: than wherein you do need to worry about? It depends
- 50:02Speaker 1: on the cartridge and depends on the bullet. I mean,
- 50:05Speaker 1: for instance, you know there's six five creed more super popular, right,
- 50:08Speaker 1: So maybe with the one forty grain, that thing's moving
- 50:12Speaker 1: feet per second, we have a six hundred weather be
- 50:15Speaker 1: that thing's moving more at thirty four feet per second.
- 50:20Speaker 1: And so between just those two again, you're gonna start
- 50:24Speaker 1: thinking about it more. Really, anything within three hundred yards
- 50:28Speaker 1: where a lot of people shoot, I mean, wind is
- 50:32Speaker 1: very rarely an actual factor, especially when you have a
- 50:36Speaker 1: fast moving cartridge. You know, when you get beyond five
- 50:38Speaker 1: hundred your wind starts to really you know, obviously make
- 50:41Speaker 1: a bigger difference. And then every fifty to a hundred
- 50:44Speaker 1: yards after that, I mean it had I mean difference
- 50:46Speaker 1: between shooting four hundred and five and fifty yards is
- 50:50Speaker 1: the world. You know, people don't kind of get where
- 50:52Speaker 1: those those things are. And so obviously with technology out
- 50:56Speaker 1: there now, it's it's helped quite a bit. You know,
- 50:58Speaker 1: you have your chestral units different things, but it I mean,
- 51:00Speaker 1: trajectory is just science. As far as bullet drop, that's
- 51:03Speaker 1: just pure physics. So you can dial up that dope
- 51:07Speaker 1: and you can have it on a card. You can
- 51:09Speaker 1: these days have it on your scope or your range finder,
- 51:11Speaker 1: you can have it on your phone. Wind especially when
- 51:14Speaker 1: you shooting cross canyon out here in different things, it's
- 51:16Speaker 1: a it's a pretty big factory terrain into the equation
- 51:20Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden you're shooting over a
- 51:23Speaker 1: little canyon or a little drop in a in a
- 51:26Speaker 1: hillside and the winds doing something totally different in that
- 51:29Speaker 1: in that bottom than it is. So when you guys say,
- 51:32Speaker 1: like how far out you know, when you shoot with
- 51:34Speaker 1: an animal, wind is is that number one my position?
- 51:38Speaker 1: You know, if I can be prone and you know whatever,
- 51:40Speaker 1: it's gonna help me shoot out further. But then obviously
- 51:43Speaker 1: that that wind is going to be I don't like
- 51:45Speaker 1: messing with it, you know, once it's out that far.
- 51:47Speaker 1: A lot of guys do, and they just try to
- 51:49Speaker 1: bucket and everything. But it's it's mother nature. Man, It's
- 51:52Speaker 1: a hard thing to predict. So this, this is something
- 51:56Speaker 1: that's definitely on my mind right now, and we might
- 51:58Speaker 1: as well just dive into it at this point. Given
- 52:01Speaker 1: where we're going. There is so much talk and interest,
- 52:06Speaker 1: especially out west, around long range shooting, shooting at long distances,
- 52:10Speaker 1: and you've got these wide open expanses to do that. Um,
- 52:13Speaker 1: that typically hasn't been as much of a thing back
- 52:16Speaker 1: east or in the Midwest, north South. Uh, it's typically
- 52:19Speaker 1: more of a short range game, sometimes by law because
- 52:21Speaker 1: you're only allowed to use a shotgun or straight wall cartridge.
- 52:24Speaker 1: Sometimes it's simply because of the terrain and the viewpoints
- 52:27Speaker 1: and all that. Uh. That said, with so much media
- 52:30Speaker 1: coming out of the West now and guys living in
- 52:33Speaker 1: Michigan seeing someone in Wyoming shooting six yards There's more
- 52:36Speaker 1: and more people experimenting with that and wondering about that
- 52:40Speaker 1: and thinking maybe I should try to shoot at a
- 52:42Speaker 1: deer across the cornfield five yards away or whatever it
- 52:45Speaker 1: might be. What can you guys tell us about and
- 52:48Speaker 1: and and assume this is to an audience that does
- 52:51Speaker 1: not know what they're talking about when it comes to
- 52:54Speaker 1: shooting rifles long range, because me, I'm the I'm the audience,
- 52:58Speaker 1: and I don't know. I don't do that kind of thing.
- 53:00Speaker 1: So how do we go about determining the right maximum
- 53:04Speaker 1: range for you and your weapon? What are the things
- 53:07Speaker 1: that should be thinking about? How do I test that?
- 53:09Speaker 1: How do I make sure I'm making a smart ethical
- 53:12Speaker 1: decision with that type of issue. Yeah, you know, lots
- 53:16Speaker 1: of things going through my head. I think, uh, you know,
- 53:19Speaker 1: I can start it off here and Kevin you can
- 53:21Speaker 1: talk about because we talk about this quite a bit.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Because we make rifles with the shoot bullets really fast
- 53:28Speaker 1: and so it it gives people a lot of confidence.
- 53:31Speaker 1: But there's a lot of people out there that maybe
- 53:33Speaker 1: shouldn't be shooting at the distances that they are. Um,
- 53:37Speaker 1: the you know, first off, if you uh, well, first off,
- 53:42Speaker 1: if you can go shoot on a bench rest, that
- 53:45Speaker 1: doesn't mean you can shoot in the field at that
- 53:47Speaker 1: same distance. So so rule number one for me would be,
- 53:50Speaker 1: have you hit that distance consistently in the same conditions
- 53:55Speaker 1: from the same position. So if I can go down
- 53:58Speaker 1: and I have a bench rest, sand, bad bags, a
- 54:00Speaker 1: lead sled, whatever, you know, I'm putting my things up,
- 54:03Speaker 1: and I can shoot at seven yards consistently at an
- 54:06Speaker 1: eight inch plate, let's say, or ten inch plate. That
- 54:09Speaker 1: doesn't mean I can do that in the field. And
- 54:12Speaker 1: so it's becoming you know, in other words, I have
- 54:15Speaker 1: I'll shoot longer prone, especially if I can even get uh,
- 54:19Speaker 1: you know, while I'm laying down on my bipod. If
- 54:21Speaker 1: I can get my pack or my bino pack even
- 54:24Speaker 1: kind of tucked up under the rear, I can get
- 54:27Speaker 1: bench rest solid from a prone position. If I'm sitting down,
- 54:31Speaker 1: say with sticks or resting it on a fence, it's
- 54:33Speaker 1: gonna be a shorter distance if I'm standing. I shot
- 54:36Speaker 1: a mule deer buck this year, and I had to
- 54:39Speaker 1: stand slash crouch through some trees, uh, and and I
- 54:43Speaker 1: had some sticks I could put up high. But obviously
- 54:45Speaker 1: my range is less. So I think understanding the difference
- 54:48Speaker 1: in that, and and I would really challenge and encourage
- 54:51Speaker 1: people depending on what type of range or land you
- 54:55Speaker 1: can go out to shoot from, because don't just go
- 54:57Speaker 1: down and shoot from a bench. Shooting of positions you're
- 55:00Speaker 1: gonna be shooting him because it makes all the difference.
- 55:02Speaker 1: A lot of guys, if they haven't shot prone a lot.
- 55:04Speaker 1: You'll sit down, your head will get up on that
- 55:06Speaker 1: scope a little bit, and people will will overshoot animals, uh,
- 55:10Speaker 1: because they haven't really practiced from those positions. So I
- 55:15Speaker 1: think that that's that's an important consideration. And so when
- 55:18Speaker 1: you talk about where you should shoot, if let's say
- 55:21Speaker 1: I know from my prone position, I have a piece
- 55:23Speaker 1: of steel out there that's the sign the size of
- 55:26Speaker 1: the vitals of the animal I'm gonna shoot, and I
- 55:28Speaker 1: can consistently hit that again and again, then yeah, I'm
- 55:32Speaker 1: comfortable to go out and shoot an animal at that distance.
- 55:34Speaker 1: But it's really gotta be apples to apples from the
- 55:37Speaker 1: way that you practice, from the way that you go
- 55:39Speaker 1: out in the field, and then also understanding when too.
- 55:42Speaker 1: So if I can shoot prone at five yards and
- 55:46Speaker 1: I'm real comfortable in hitting vitals and blah blah blah.
- 55:48Speaker 1: But I get out there in the field and it's
- 55:50Speaker 1: a gusty day and it's twenty five your things change.
- 55:53Speaker 1: So you need to understand those elements that that come
- 55:55Speaker 1: into to play as well. Um and then maybe lastly
- 55:59Speaker 1: and then all I can stop. I talked about this
- 56:01Speaker 1: all day, but but it's also understanding your bullet um,
- 56:06Speaker 1: your cartridge in the energy that it carries through at
- 56:11Speaker 1: different yardages, okay, And so it's important to know if
- 56:16Speaker 1: you're shooting a six five creed more, you can shoot
- 56:18Speaker 1: it accurately and maybe hit steel with no wind and
- 56:21Speaker 1: shoot that at eight hundred yards, But a six five
- 56:24Speaker 1: creed more energy wise at eight hundred yards um isn't
- 56:28Speaker 1: going to have a lot of foot pounds of energy
- 56:31Speaker 1: to take down an animal like an elk at that distance.
- 56:34Speaker 1: And so depending on the cartridge, Like my daughter shoots
- 56:38Speaker 1: a six five creed more a lot. She's younger, but
- 56:41Speaker 1: I'm gonna have that range be not necessarily because she
- 56:44Speaker 1: can't hit it. But it's like man at that point,
- 56:46Speaker 1: especially if you're shooting an elk or larger animal like
- 56:49Speaker 1: you better hit those vitals, you know, where you have
- 56:51Speaker 1: a little more room for air when you have a
- 56:54Speaker 1: larger cartridge that delivers more footpounds of energy as well.
- 56:57Speaker 1: So it's also understanding that what would you add, Kevin,
- 57:02Speaker 1: I think the footpounds of energy would be My My
- 57:04Speaker 1: main thing is when you run, you know, and I
- 57:07Speaker 1: guess like you say, and starting from from the base
- 57:10Speaker 1: level here, when you get muzzle velocities either off of
- 57:13Speaker 1: a box of ammunition which a manufacturer will put on
- 57:17Speaker 1: that box, um saying this is what this is, how
- 57:19Speaker 1: fast that cartridge that this bullet is coming out of
- 57:22Speaker 1: that barrel with a specific cartridge when you get that
- 57:27Speaker 1: like for whether but rather be rounds for instance, we
- 57:29Speaker 1: have velocity energy and inches a variation of drop at
- 57:35Speaker 1: every hundred yards to five yards yards yards. If you
- 57:38Speaker 1: look at some you know, just general studies, you'll start
- 57:41Speaker 1: to look and see about what people general opinions think
- 57:45Speaker 1: a bullet needs footpounds of energy wise to take down
- 57:48Speaker 1: an animal of different sized proportions. If you don't have
- 57:53Speaker 1: a box that has that, you could go to any
- 57:56Speaker 1: general ballistic calculator online and type in a couple of
- 57:59Speaker 1: key things which would be ballistic coefficient also called b C,
- 58:04Speaker 1: muzzle velocity size, of the bullet, and generally it will
- 58:08Speaker 1: spit out what that's gonna be at distances and you
- 58:11Speaker 1: can kind of decide if that's footpounds of energy that
- 58:14Speaker 1: you're comfortable with. I think that that's an important factor.
- 58:18Speaker 1: But really for me because I'm you know, generally, we're
- 58:21Speaker 1: kind of lucky because we're kind of comfortable with everything,
- 58:24Speaker 1: like our guns and our cartridges. We we kind of
- 58:27Speaker 1: do this every day, so we know like, oh, I
- 58:29Speaker 1: shoot this at this distance and this is But I
- 58:32Speaker 1: think my number one thing when you're talking about me
- 58:34Speaker 1: being in the field is that I just respect animals
- 58:37Speaker 1: and I don't want to I don't want to a
- 58:40Speaker 1: compromise a hunt or be compromise an animal because of
- 58:44Speaker 1: me wanting to shoot it at a further distance just
- 58:49Speaker 1: because I could put a bullet in it, I don't
- 58:51Speaker 1: shoot it. And I just one thing that I'm really
- 58:53Speaker 1: adamant about, and I think a lot of us here are.
- 58:56Speaker 1: Um you know, like if it's eight hundred yards away
- 58:58Speaker 1: and you're like, oh man, it's last day of the hunt, hunt,
- 59:00Speaker 1: but I don't have a gun to shoot it. I'm
- 59:02Speaker 1: just not gonna squeeze it. I just I think that
- 59:04Speaker 1: we have a responsibility I do to to be smart
- 59:09Speaker 1: with how we're hunting and to have respect for the
- 59:12Speaker 1: game that we get the opportunity to hunt. And I
- 59:14Speaker 1: think sometimes when you're talking about long range stuff, people
- 59:18Speaker 1: want to see how far they can scoop back to
- 59:20Speaker 1: shoot that animal. I just think sometimes that might not
- 59:22Speaker 1: be the best option. So I just say, from a
- 59:26Speaker 1: personal perspective, really think about that from how we have
- 59:30Speaker 1: the opportunity to hunt and the animals that we do
- 59:32Speaker 1: get to hunt, and how how awesome that is. I
- 59:35Speaker 1: just have a great respect for the animals that we
- 59:37Speaker 1: get that we get a chance to go after, and
- 59:38Speaker 1: I don't I don't want to compromise them. The worst
- 59:40Speaker 1: feeling in the world is shooting a deer and and
- 59:43Speaker 1: not finding it. And I think a lot of people
- 59:45Speaker 1: have been in that situation. So right, it's knowing the
- 59:50Speaker 1: size of your animal too. So you're out here and
- 59:52Speaker 1: I mean, you know in elks, vitals is a little
- 59:55Speaker 1: larger than a than a prong horn, and so you know,
- 59:57Speaker 1: it's also understanding that that size of your tard it.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: And I think people that haven't hunted maybe out out
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: in the western more mountainous regions to understand, like even
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: a lot of times with mule deer or elk. Certainly
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: there's there is a lot of cross canyon stuff and
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: I've I've shot a few elk in the last few years,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: and the fish range and yardage and and yet what
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: happened is there's a canyon in between. I closed the
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: gap as much as I could, and you know, sometimes
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: it's uh, you know, the likelihood of being able to
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: get closer is just a hard thing to do. And
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: until you've hunted in this terrain, that's maybe a hard
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: harder thing to understand until you've kind of been here.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: And sometimes you're you're sitting there glass and you're like, yeah,
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: well there's a big old gorge or drainage or creek
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: below me, and then it shoots up on the other side,
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: and like it's a hard thing to to go there,
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: and dependent on how the wind is. Um. You know,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: it's it's sometimes so so being able to have that ability, certainly,
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: you know, the more you can get confident where you
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: feel you can consistently hit that target, um, it does
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: up your odds of being able to tag your animal
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: and and make a make a great shot. I mean
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: my best, probably my best elk kill shot was a yards. Um,
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: not that they've all been great, but the best single
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: one I had. It was a hard shot. It was there,
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: there was no wind, you know, Um, I understood my
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: scope and and and made a clean shot. But I've
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: had bad shots. I've had bad shots at two yards
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: as we all have had. So it's you know, understanding
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: that proficiency. But I guess I'll kind of clothing and
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: push it back to you for sure. But is uh,
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: you know, optics does play a big part in it
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: as well. Is um, there's so many different ways to
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: dial in your scope. Are you gonna have a hold
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: over or are you going to have maybe an app
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: on your phone and you dial it in and then
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: you have you actually dial your scope, you know, with
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: a zero stop type of scope, and so there are
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: understanding the different methods of how you're gonna do that
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: when you're shooting out further, The bottom line is you're
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: either gonna need to hold over, You're gonna need to
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: dial something and uh, you're gonna kind of need to
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: to figure that out and and be be comfortable with it.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: And an error in that category there of not understanding
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: the way your optics work, you can mean a miss
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: or uh, you know, an injured animal that gets away,
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: So it is important to to understand that as well.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: You know. Actually, great example of this I was I
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: was mule deer hunting this past weekend in Nebraska, and um,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: I had brought a firearm with me that a friend
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: of ours was using for some for some stuff we
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: were doing here at weather being and I I, uh,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: we had a scope that had it was it was
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: actually a vortex lightweight hunter and it had m o
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: A drops under it to sixteen in and it goes
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: by two four or six eight. And I told them
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: where that holdover was at three because we wanted to
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: verify rifles. And he was a little bit unsure about
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: what the two four six state meant and we were
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: a little He was hard. He thought they were the
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: dashes and not, like it just depends on how that
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: scope is set up, if we were gonna dial it
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: or if we're going to use the hashes for the
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: hold over. Anyways, we took like four shots and they
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: were all really high, and he was like, are you
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: sure this thing is sided in? I was like, I'm
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: pretty sure this thing is sided in and I was like,
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: do you mind if I shoot it? And he was like, no,
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: that's fine. So I got behind it and we hit
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: the piece of steel and he was like, what was
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: I doing wrong? And I was like, you were holding
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: on the six, not the two. But it's just you
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: know exactly what Adam said, you know, especially, you just
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: gotta know that scope. You gotta know what menu of
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: angle means, or you gotta know what mill means depending
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: on which scope you're using. UM, and what those adjustments
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: mean at distances, not only at a hundred yards being
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: a quarter click, but also what that translates to at
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: three hundred yards being a clip. And it also means
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: you have to have your your rifle really dialed in
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: because so if you're two inches right at a hundred yards, well,
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: who who cares at a hundred yards? But if five
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: hundred yards you're now ten inches, you know, and it's
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: seven year fourteen and so UM, it's really making sure
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: that you're very dialed in UM and that your rifle
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: is accurate, because so if your rifle shoots a two
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: inch group, who cares at a hundred yards? Uh, well
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: it's six hundred yards. You know that could mean either
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: missing your animal or your vitals for sure. So there
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: are a lot of factors. I hope I don't know
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: if we answered your question, but obviously we can talk
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: about this all day. No, you certainly did. And I
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: feel like we need to rewind the tape just a
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: little bit and start a little bit earlier in the
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: process though, because you were talking about choosing the right
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: cartridge that has the right feet per second, that has
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: the right energy, and that's something that I do think, uh,
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: And I'm speaking a little bit from my own experience
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: here and from my own circle of friends and family. Um.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: But oftentimes you shoot the gun your gran your grandpa
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: gave you, or you shoot the gun you picked up
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: that one time. And if everyone that you hang out
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: with you it's a three or weight, you shoot a
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: three or weight, um, because you're out there and you
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: get a hundred fifty yards shot for a week a year,
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: and um, we typically there aren't as many people that
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: are getting as serious about really dialing in their firearms
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: and really knowing them here as they maybe might be
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: in Wyoming or Montana, where that's just so much more
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: of a possibility to take those types of shots. So
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: my question then is let's start at the beginning, which
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: is then making sure you're choosing the right cartridge for
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: your scenario. Um, how do you guys go about making
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: that decision when it comes to picking the right cartridge
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: for a white tail hunt versus? Then if you want
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: to go out west and chase a bigger game like
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: mule deer or elk or moose or something like that,
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: can kind of walk us through the thought process that
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: the questions you should be thinking about, um, and then
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: maybe some specific recommendations to great question. And again that's
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: a deep question. Yeah, that's a deep question. It is.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: I think you know, we talked about it earlier. People
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: think about speed, but an important thing to think about
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: is energy. It's measured in footpounds, and so usually when
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: you look at a ballistics chart on a you can
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: google it on that particular cartridge. Uh, you know that
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: that footpounds and energy is what is important. And so
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: as you're shooting out further, the faster your bullet is moving,
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: it's obviously gonna be that speed and that weight combined, right,
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: that's gonna carry that. So your bullet weight is gonna
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: be an important factor in other words um. Let's say,
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: you know, let's say a two fifty seven weather Be. Okay,
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: maybe you're shooting a hundred grain bullet that's a caliber bullets,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: lighter accuband or something out of the things gonna shoot
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: flat and far um. It's it's gonna be awesome for
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: most all your deer, your white tail, your mule deer.
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: But then I, I personally lots of people do. I
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: wouldn't choose to use that on a moose er elk
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: because I just would want more mass in that bullet, right,
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: And so you know, there's the mass of the bullet,
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: but then there's speed to consider, uh as well. And
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: so people try to find, you know, a a kind
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: of middle of the road cartridge, which you could do
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: certainly to try to shoot North American big game. I mean,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: our three D weather Be Magnum is our best selling
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: cartridge for seventy years or whatever, because you can maybe
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: load it into one six grain all the way up
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: to a two twenty grain. Really, uh, that you could
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: put in there. You know, it's it's fast, it's it's flat,
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: all those different things. So you're really looking at your speed.
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: You're looking at that foot pounds of energy, so your
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: mass of your bullet is going to be in there.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: Some people are going to consider recoil. However, I would
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: say that with the technology of muzzle breaks, with our
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: muzzle break, I mean my daughter who's sixteen, I could
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: put her behind a three in a weather be mag
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: with a muzzle break, or if you can hunt with
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: the suppressor, which obviously is a little more complicated, it's
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: no problem. I think people do overthink the recoil thing
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: just a little bit, especially if you can have a
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: muscle break. Um, and so you're really kind of taking
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: all of those those factors into into consideration, you know,
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: when when choosing a cartridge like we have. And it's
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: crazy if you haven't grown up really around understanding cartridges
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: and bullets and ballistics explaining it, Oh my gosh, it's
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: it's really hard. What's the difference between a caliber and
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: a cartridge. Well, caliber technically is the diameter of a bullet,
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: which is the projectile in the end of your cartridge.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: And there's dozens of manufacturers four bullets, so yeah, just yeah,
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: just for reference saying we load all kinds of bullets
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: made by other manufacturers. We actually don't make bullets, right,
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: we only we only produce cartridges, right right, which is
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: a case, powder primer and a bullet, you know, so
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: it's made up of four things. So it's really and
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: and I know and maybe speaking of you know, people
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: are like, I get that, and yet some people maybe
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: don't get that. So let's say you talk about a
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: thirty caliber bullet. It's actually technically a diameter of point
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: three zero eight inches, and a thirty caliber bullet is
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: used in everything from a three oh eight Winchester six
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: thirty odds six Springfield, three D weather B thirty weather
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: be a three PRC. It's all the same bullet, it's
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: just moving it at different speeds and flat out, the
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: faster that that thirty cow bullet is going out that muzzle,
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: the further you're going to be able to shoot that
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: thirty cow bullet. And then one of the things that's
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: really been a trend lately and where there's been a
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: lot of advancements in technology and bullet development is in
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: the ballistic coefficient. We call it BC. It sounds pretty
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: techy if you're not used to it, but basically that's
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: a calculation that tells you the aerodynamics of your bullet,
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: and that really has a say on how flat that
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: bullet shoots. So let's say out of a thirty cow
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: three weather B for instance, you could, uh, you can
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: have a bullet that's a b C of three fifty
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: kay point three five. You can have one that's six hundred.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: That one that has a six hundred BC is gonna
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: end up shooting, say it a thousand yards certainly feet
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: feet difference, not just inches, but feet because of the
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: aerodynamics of that bullet. So we're getting longer, heavier, higher
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: BC bullets that are shooting flatter and further. And there's
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: been a lot of technology. Uh you know, obviously Hornedy
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: their e l d X bullet Burger with their v
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: l d s, they've been a couple really leading the way.
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: Nozzler's got some now as well. They're long range accuban
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: those are going to be able to shoot further as well.
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: But then lastly, you also want to take into consideration
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: that bullet construction and how it's going to penetrate, if
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: it's going to hold together, is it gonna fragment, does
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: it hold together at different velocities? So it is I
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: mean I tried to go simple and I hope that
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: made some sense. But but you just go deep. Kevin
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: could maybe take it not as deep, but just goes deep.
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: The more you get into no, no, it's interesting, you know,
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: just uh, we're I'd like to think we're honest people
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: over here, whether it be but a year and a
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: half ago or yeah, a year and a half ago.
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: When I started here, I grew up hunting with rifles
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: a lot, and exactly what you said, Mark, Um, we
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: just knew what cartridges were, the ones that have always
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: been around. The thirty thirty, that thirty at six. We
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: shot those rounds and that's what my dad gave me,
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: and that's why we shot it. And it had its
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: purposes and honestly, we shot it a few times a
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: year and we were really happy with it. And I
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: felt like I knew a lot about ballistics and cartridges
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: and things like that. And when I got here, I
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: was like, all right, I better hit the books because
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: and you know what, there's still times, no joke, there's
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: still times where Adams like, hey, that's not right when
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: we're talking about something, and I'm like it's gotta be right,
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: and he's like, no, that's not right, and I'm like ah,
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: and so I gotta go back and learn again. But
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: now I'm like, I'm super into it. I think it's
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: intriguing and I think it's interesting and and I love
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: talking about it, um, just because it's it really is.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: When you really start to dive into it and understand
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: it a little bit, it really changes the way you
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: hunt and the reason you shoot certain cartridges. But kind
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: of looking back on it, when you're talking about more
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: like deer like cartridges, Um, really, when you're talking about
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: weather Be cartridges, at seven is gonna be one of
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: the most popular rounds for deer out of a weather
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: Be round, um. And you know that's in direct comparison
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: with the twenty five O six, which is very popular
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: for white tails, and um, not a ton of people shoot,
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: but at tifty seven Roberts is another one that it
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: directly compares with. But you want to talk about straight
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: up killing power. Seven has done things to animals in
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: the last year and a half that I've seen with
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: my own eyes, and I've been like, WHOA, that was unbelievable.
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: You know, we've seen people shoot uh, antelope and mule
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: deer and deer with that cartridge and it just puts
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: them down so fast, and I it's just it's just
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: a crazy cartridge. So that one, and then obviously you
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: start talking about your six five offerings, which is a
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: huge thing right now. Uh, you know, we obviously we
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: chamber six five Creed Mores in our rifles, which is popular,
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: but we also have the UM which is going substantially faster.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: And then we just this year came out with the
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: six five weather b RPM, which is an incredible all
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: around cartridge for literally almost all of North America. If
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: you want to shoot a white tail, be great for it.
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: If you want to start stepping up, it would be
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: amazing for It's funny mark is the questions that you're
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: asking as some of the number one things we get,
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: Like if we post something on social media about a cartridge,
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: it blows up every time. People have questions, people argue
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: about it, people are fascinated by it. People are educated,
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: some people are very uneducated. Things they still want to
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: post as if they're educated. Our customer service every day
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: gets phone calls from people asking what cartridge should I buy?
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: And we answer that question and have for over seven
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: decades because and at the end of the day, it's
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: like sure, thirty go kill a heck of a lot
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: of stuff. I'm in North America, but you want something
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: to be best. So there is there are a lot
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: of things to consider, but there's a lot of great material,
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: a lot of great articles out there, you know, to
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: kind of start to look into some things. Yeah, that
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: that information gap is present for a lot of people still,
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: even though there is so much information out there, and
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: and this is helpful, going to the bare bones basics
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: and building us up with some of these key um
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: ideas is is not a waste of time. I know
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: there's a lot of guys who are who are finding
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: this helpful right now, and I want to I want
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: to do this one more time with another set of
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: gear questions that people will have. Because if we're going
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: from from Mark who grew up hunting with his grandpa's
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: one semi auto rifle in thirty six, that's all I
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: ever used for a whole lot of years. Uh now
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: it's okay, Now I'm buying a new rifle. When we
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: talked about cartridges, what about just general choosing the right
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: firearm for your situation. Um, I mean you're thinking about
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: what caliber, You're thinking about how long of a barrel,
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: how heavy of a gun? I remember when I was choosing,
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: you know, my next rifle. Did I want something really
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: lightweight that I could pack around on back country Western hunts?
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: Or because I don't shoot as much as some guys
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: and I'm not I don't consider myself a pro marksman.
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: I'd rather have a heavier gun that's gonna be a
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: little more stable. So these are some of the things
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: I was starting to try to think about myself. Um,
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: but you guys are the experts. Tell me what should
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: someone in my shoes be thinking about when trying to
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: make that firearm purchase decision? Yeah, I mean I think
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: you need to go. Okay, what is just like anything
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: else maybe in our purchases, was we say what's the utilization?
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: What person am I going to be using it? Uh?
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: You know on a corn field versus hiking in the mountains. Um,
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: and so you really need to know, Yeah, what is
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: that main thing? Like some people don't like getting skinny
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: or barrels because they think it will heat up a lot.
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: But if you're a back country hunter and you're gonna
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: be hiking around putting on thirty miles in a number
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: of days, which we do all the time. I'm hoping
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: to only shoot once twice, maybe three times. And so
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: to me, the thickness of my barrel, because skinnier barrels
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: are gonna heat up more, will affect accuracy. A skinnier,
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: lighter fluted barrel like on our back country rifle. If
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: I'm a lot of the honey and I'm doing, that's
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: really important to me. But if the time I'm either
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: truck hunting or you know, stand country or whatever, then
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: that doesn't mean anything to me. And so I think
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: it's it's kind of first going, okay, where am I
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: going to spend you know, most of my time? If
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: that makes sense. I mean, really, when you look at
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: a rifle, there's not a lot of components to it.
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: You have your action, you got your barrel in your stock,
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: and that kind of makes up most it. And that's
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: where to make different And we got a lot of
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: different change is to it it, just like every gun
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: maker out there does. But I think so if you
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: start with your barrel, uh, you know, talked about we
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: just talked about each of those three things real quick
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: probably and maybe answer that question you go, okay, well,
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: then there's finish too. But um, but if you talk
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: about your barrel, you can get a skinnier flu to barrel,
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: you can get a heavy steel barrel. And then what's
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: popular now are the carbon fiber barrels, which our actual
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: thinner steel barrels wrapped in carbon fiber. In case people
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: don't know, it's the bullet is not traveling down carbon fiber,
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: it's still traveling down steel. But that's very popular. Um.
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: The things to consider with barrels would be usually weight
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: uh and then usually heat uh. So UM, A skinnier
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: barrel is gonna be lighter. And if you know you're
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: not gonna shooting a lot of rounds but you want
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: to hike it around, skinny barrel is great. If you
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: want to heavier barrel, you'll be able to go down
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: plank at the range or maybe shoot some varmints or whatever.
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: And if you're gonna be shooting a lot, you might
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: want a heavier barrel because it is going to hold
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: its accuracy longer. That's where carbon fiber barrels have grown
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: in popularity is you get a lighter weight barrel, although
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: our carbon fiber wrapped steel barrel is not necessarily lighter
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: than a skinny barrel, but it has more the performance
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: of a heavy steel barrel when it comes to heat dissipation,
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: but without all that steel on it. So carbon fiber,
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: although more costly, could be a good middle road for people.
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: So you really kind of want to consider that on barrels, right, Kevin. Yeah,
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: that was a great explanation when you got into the
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: carbon fiber is a little bit it's a little bit deep,
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: but a lot of carbon fiber barrels guns back east
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: to actually do and you know it's important and in
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: the South, which is funny, it's important to note that
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: a carbon fiber barrel does not make it the lightest
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: gun possible. Um are our our skinny barrels for what
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: I want to get into contours, but our skinny barrels,
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: like trying to use our skinny barrels are way lighter
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: than carbon barrels because the carbon barrels are going to
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: be general a fifty six lighter than a steel barrel
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: in the same thickness contour contour. UM. So it's important
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: to note that m really the main thing about the
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: carbon fibers heat dissipation. But it's it's throughout the years
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: a lot of people think, oh, I want the lightest
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: gun I could get. I'm gonna get that carbon fiber barrel,
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: and it's they're not the lightest, but the lightest gun
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: is our back country t I. It's a back country
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: titanium gun. It's four pounds four point nine pounds and
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: it's a titanium action with the thinnest barrel with flutes
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: in it we can put on with the carbon fiber stock.
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: We just made it as light as possible. Now that
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: that's not gonna be a I'm gonna go down and
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: plank all weekend gun. That's gonna be strap it your
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: stuff stuff and kill stuff. But so that's a little
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: bit on barrel stocks. Um. You know, traditionally obviously, you know,
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: there was woodstocks for years, and obviously for the first
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: fifty years that's most of what we sold. Uh. We
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: came out with the first kind of maybe commercially available
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: fiberglass stock in the early eighties. We called it the
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: fiber mark. My grandpa told my dad would never sell
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: because it wasn't, you know, just that beautiful wood and
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: then it's sold and my grandpa Grandpa said, well, I
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: guess times are changing. But uh, but ever since then,
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: I mean plus of what we sell is not going
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: to be a woodstock. There's a place for it, and
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: I like hunting with the woodstock, but I'm not gonna
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: go beat it up carrying it around the mountains. But
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: if I'm not gonna be hiking a lot, there's a
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: good place for it. But it can get wet, it
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: can swell, it can fluctuate with temperature. So basically there's
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: three main types of stocks. You would have an injection
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: molded plastic stock. They usually call it polymer. People don't
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: go to market plastic, but that's gonna be most your
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: guns you see out there these days. They're plastic. They're molded.
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: But I've taken many weather be vanguards out of the
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: box in a plastic SA box and shot half inch groups.
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: But it doesn't mean they're not gonna shoot. Then you
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: kind of step up to fiberglass. The fiberglass typically is
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: gonna be lighter than the polymer or plastic. It often
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: has an aluminum bedding block where the action goes in
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: in the barrel, and and uh, the fiberglass can be lighter,
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: maybe a little higher performance. And then a lot of
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: what we have now is we have carbon fiber wrapped stocks,
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: which is very similar technology of how the fiberglass is made,
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: but it's carbon fiber. And so really you're jumping up
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: in your materials based on kind of your your budget
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: really uh, you know, with those three materials, and then
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: obviously that carbon fiber stock is going to be the
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: lightest out of any of any of those stocks. Um,
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: it's also going to perform very very well and be
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: and be pretty darn durable. Then you have the shape
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: of your stock, um, and that's been really changing the
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: last three to five years. You had a lot of
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: just additional stocks, and now you had what looked like
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: the tactical stocks that are on these hunting rifles. And
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: so you have adjustability sometimes in your length of poll
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: uh and in your comb which raises your cheek piece
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: up and down to a line for better site acquisition
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: with your scope. And so there's a lot of folks
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: that enjoy that type of shooting and hunting. Now where
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: you could get a carbon fiber stock and there's a
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: lot more material and the gun looks heavy, but it
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: it's still is lighter, say, if you get it in
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: a carbon fiber stock. And so your stock shape is
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: really another thing, and a lot of that's just personal preference.
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: It's good to go buy a local gun shop. See
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: how that works, See how you know you you you
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: kind of when you you pull up the gun, how
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: your cheek aligns to it, and how it feels, how
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: that pistol grip feels as you wrap your your finger,
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: you know, kind of around it. Um. And so there's
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: really been a lot of change in the last few
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: years in regards to a lot of stock shapes where
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: guys are going out with what looks like more range
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: or tactical guns and they're going into the field with it.
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: At first I thought it was a little silly, um,
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: But as folks are wanting to shoot out further and
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: they're used to that, they want that stock they feel
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: a bit more comfortable with. So that's kind of your
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: your stock. And then and then really it's you know,
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: your action is kind of your last your last part. Obviously,
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: we have the weather b Mark five action and weather
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: Be Vanguard action, and there's differences in your different actions
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: of say your bolt lift, like our Mark five lifts
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: fifty four degrees is maybe to a traditional ninety degrees,
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: which means you can maybe cycle rounds a little bit quicker.
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: You have maybe different types of feeding to look into
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: when you're you know, you're pulling the cartridges out and
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: pushing it in, and so a lot of that's kind
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: of feel you have different weight and preference. But I'll
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: tell you what, what's selling a lot of guns these days.
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: It's just new, cool looking stuff. I'm not gonna lie.
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: There's it's carbon fiber, it's colors, and then really it's
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: the whole coating, the Sarah coat, which we're tradition rifles
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: were blued. Now we have a serracode process which gives
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: it function and fashion gives it color. You have a
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: flat dark earth color, a tan type of color, and
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: it's really durable, so that's popular. You have camo dip stocks,
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: that's real popular. So a lot of guys are getting
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: new guns because stuff is just looking cool right now.
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: And honestly, that's what sells a lot of guns, because
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: you can go pick up your grandpa's thirty out six
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: and probably go shoot a lot of a lot of stuff.
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: But anyways, I don't know if that helped any aren't
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: incredibly helpful. I think there's there's I've said over and
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: over again, but there's so many people that I think
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: lack the fundamental uh, the foundations of this stuff, understanding
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: these different pieces and why they matter and how the
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: differences matter. So this is this is important. I think.
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: Would you add anything, Kevin to to what Adam was saying.
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: I mean, there's a lot, um, there's a lot. He
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: broke it down into four sections. But even within those
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: four sections, that's where brands start different shading themselves. So
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: you know, I don't know, you can really look into triggers.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: You could look into one piece bolts versus multiple piece bolts. Um.
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: You could look into the lugs on the actions, you
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: could look into the fluting on the on the barrels.
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: You could look into the shapes of the stock and
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: what they're made of and the recoil. There's are like
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: a lot of stuff, and that's where you just start
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: seeing that that price difference and that those brand identities
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: in each one of those rifles. And so when you
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: start looking for a rifle, definitely, most brands are very
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: different for a reason. Um, someone thinks that their action
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: is better than someone else's or something like that, and
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: then you know there's there's a lot of companies that
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: are all built on Remick in seven hundreds. So, um,
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: you know, obviously accuracy, you know one of the things.
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: You know, accuracy is obviously very important. A lot of
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: companies have different guarantees. All our rifles guarantee sub m
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: o A, which means that a hundred yard you're gonna
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: shoot an inch less and on out. Some will claim
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: half correct. Let's not say you yeah, it's a guarantee
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: and we guarantee it, but it's a it's a funny guarantee.
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: But uh. And so you know, the accuracy is big,
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: and the further out you shoot, the more important that
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: accuracy is going to be. Even in a hunting scenario. Now,
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: accuracy can be a bit subjective because you have the shooter,
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: you have environmental elements, you have to load the bullet,
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: I mean the barrel the way it's better than the stock.
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: There's a lot of things in with accuracy. We'd like
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: to say we we we manufacture very accurate rifles, but
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: most of my competitors would tell you that as well,
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: and and and frankly a lot of them do. Um.
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: You know, where we differentiate is in the speed game,
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: because that is more of a strict math thing and
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: so um, we have in most cases the fastest moving
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: bullet per that bullet diameter uh in a weather be
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: cartridge than anybody else. And that's a differentiator for us.
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: We call it but listic superiority sounds kind of cool. Uh.
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: In other words, ours is gonna shoot shoot flatter. We
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: try to be the most accurate, but a lot of
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: people claim that, and that can be really even rifled
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: the rifle. That's crazy thing about accuracy. You can take
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: out and have five barrels made by the same manufacturer,
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: put in the same gun, and one of them would
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: like one bullet better than the next, and they're made
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: to the same specifications. Accuracy, it can be, Man, you
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: chasing accuracy. Man, there there's some science to it and
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: and there's some voodoo and some black magic. It's crazy
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: due to accuracy. But but that's where that understanding and
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: knowing your speed and velocity and energy and drop, that's
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: just a good research and math, you know, type of thing,
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: and that's where we like to think we differentiate. That's
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: how my grandpa started the company. It was actually not
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: with guns, it was with fast moving bullets. That's what
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: he wanted to do. His whole philosophy was let's get
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: bullets moving faster. And that's the only reason Kevin and
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: I got a job today is because Grandpa had an
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: idea of moving things faster. I I I so often
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: can point to my Grandpa as the reason I've got
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: this job too. So that's funny how that works out
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: something times, that's cool. That is cool. So you talked
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: about chasing accuracy around and and one of the things
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: you guys stand by is not just your accuracy but
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: the speed. Um. But what about let's let's let's go
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: back to our example person, our example person. We've talked
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: a little bit about how we should be thinking a
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: little differently if we're going out rifle hunting. Now we've
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: talked a little bit about bare bones basic knowledge. You
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: need to pick the right cartridge, to pick the right firearm.
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: Now we were set up. We've got our new gun.
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: We are becoming a more serious rifle hunter. Now I'm
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: not just taking Grandpa's gone. I've got a new one.
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: I'm going out there. I'm going to really take this seriously,
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: be the best rifle hunter I possibly can be. Now
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: we've got to talk about actually pulling the trigger and
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: doing it well and handling that moment of truth. Of course,
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: there's been a million things written about how to become
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: a better marksman. People have talked about podcasts, people have
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: I mean, it's it's all the time, right, But if
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: you guys had to break down and share a couple
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: of your pieces of advice or key things to always
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: keep in mind for someone who's trying to go from
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: the I take my gun out the day before a
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: rifle season, I make sure it's on zero, and then
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: I go out from that guy to them become a
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: guy who can become a really, really good marksman. What
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: would your advice be for making that shift in that
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: transition you want me to start, I've been starting every time. UM,
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: you know, I think that the most important thing on
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: that would just be UM practice and repetition, just like
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: you would do with anything else, whether it be a
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: sporting activity or or or anything else you're you're doing.
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: You just need to practice with that rifle and that's
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: gonna be the most important thing. UM. Trigger pools a
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: major thing. A lot of people need to make sure
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: that you know, it goes in hand to hand with
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: a few things we talked about recoil, and we talked
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: about our brakes. A lot of the I would venture
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: to say, this isn't a fact that a lot of
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: inaccuracies come from people maybe being scared of the recoil,
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: developing a flinch, developing a flinch, developing target panics, something
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: like that. UM brakes helped tremendously with that right now,
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: UM And in my opinion, and I know that maybe
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: not everybody does this, but it's super easy to carry
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: around ear plugs these days. And and I carry around
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: ear plugs when I hunt, UM, and right before I shoot,
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: I put them in so the break even without it,
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: I've shot a couple of guns without breaks, I mean,
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: with breaks, without your protection, and I've still been still
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: been fine. It's really not been that much different. Now.
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: When you're sitting at a range on a bench and
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: you're under an awning and you're shooting it, it's way louder.
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: And that's I think people are like, may that breaks
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: so loud. But a lot of the time, the only
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: time they ever hear it's at a range when their
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: neighbors just blowing their ear drums out. So in the
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: open field or in the timber man that the brakes
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: aren't as bad as they really really limit recoil. But
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: obviously I think pulling the triggers probably the most important
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: part of being UM a good marksman UM breath control, UM,
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: knowing your your inhales and your ex shales on your trigger,
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: your pool, and how you kind of approach that situation. UM.
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: I think all that that's pretty important, and I really
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: would echo that and also just go back to that
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: positioning in practicing in field positions, and to be honest,
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: you can do that UM in in a in a
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: safe in a safe way. You can do that without shooting.
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: I remember doing that with my wife and kids early
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: on when they were getting into hunting. Is we'd go
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: into backyard and we live in a rural area, but
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: we wouldn't get ammunition. And you just go out there,
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: grab a pack, maybe grab sticks, bipod what you might have.
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: Maybe there's some bushes in your backyard, and go see
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: that rock up on the hill two o'clock. That's an
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: elk and it's you got ten seconds to get your
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: side on it before it goes over that hill. What
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: would you do right now? And it's a three and
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: or fifty yards so I'm not gonna shoot it, you know, offhand,
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: what are you gonna do? And it's getting down in
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: that position, and I've seen a lot of people just
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: either rush it and miss animals or never get a
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: shot off because you don't understand, like when you're in
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: the field like that and in the moment, like you
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: gotta be able to think constantly, Okay, what am I doing?
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: What position am I getting in? And I grabbing sticks
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: and I grabbing a bipod? Am I throwing it on
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: a pack? And I resting it on a limb? And
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: really understanding your points of contact with the ground. So
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: the more points of contact you have, like even if
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: you're sitting on your butt using sticks or a limb,
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: it's okay, I want an elbow on a knee. And
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: it's figuring those things out. And so it's not just
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: I think a lot of people can shoot a lot
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: of really good stuff at a bench, But I'm really
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: convinced that a lot of people don't practice enough in
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: field positions on hills. You know, I don't know, it's
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: all those different things, and so I really encourage people
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: to practice in those type of positions that may be
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: a buddy with the ranch or some land you can
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: go out to, depending on the rules that you range
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: and where you're at. If you can go prone, their
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: use sticks and then know your distances per shooting position. Uh.
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: Obviously standing sometimes you're gonna of shooting animal you bust
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: them out of the sticks and in the woods. So
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: I'll cunt with my son a few weeks ago, and
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: we busted a bunch of bulls at fifty to sixty
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: yards uh in the trees. Didn't have time to set up.
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: Therefore we didn't shoot an elk, but right in that moment,
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: offhand would have been best. Uh. But then obviously if
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: he had seen one at four hundred yards, he's he
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: was gonna want to get prone and and establishing kind
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: of how to how to do that, and even the
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: shooting accessories you need, Like I have a system I use.
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: Um it's a spartan uh, both a carbon fiber bipod
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: and shooting sticks, and my shooting sticks would go to
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: full standing. I can go sitting, and I can go prone,
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: and I know in any of those positions that enables
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: me to go out further. If I'm just hoping there's
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: a tree branch that doesn't happen. If I just sit
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: down on my button, don't have sticks, I'm not gonna
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: shoot out as far. So it's really understanding that positioning
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: and and really purchasing gear that will enable you to
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: to be able to shoot out further as well. Yeah,
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: that's such good advice, I feel, and I've alluded to
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: this several times, but there is this, uh, this mistake
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: that I think that happens commonly. And I'm saying this
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: because I have done in the past, which is assuming
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: that when you pick up the rifle, it's it's easy time,
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: it's time to des grab the gun, go out, and
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: then you can shoot your deer. But so many mistakes
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: I think happened when you go into it that assumption
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: and you don't practice in the different positions. You don't
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: give the time and care to making the right decisions
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: around the right cartridge or the right optic, or practicing
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: just as much as you do with your bow. I
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: think a lot of people understand that details matter when
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: it comes to getting proficient with a bow, and then
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: they ignore that very same thing with their next weapon,
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: the next phase of their season. And I think I
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: think people pay for that. So this is This is
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: such important foundational knowledge that I appreciate you guys taken
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: the time to step back and talk about the basic things.
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: I know this is probably maybe boring for you to
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: have to go through these basic ideas again and again
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: again for so many people over decades and decades, but
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: I'm telling you what. People need it and uh and
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: I appreciate it so much. If if two things, number one,
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: I think we have to get some time on the
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: calendar someday to do the part to the advanced level course,
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: which I think hopefully if people will listen to this
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: and kay, decide all right, I've got my basics covered,
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: I'm gonna go and take this to the next level.
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: And then next year they're gonna say, Okay, now how
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: do I really ramp things up. We're gonna have to
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: have a round two schedule. But if well, then I
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: got an idea for a market, or for around three market,
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: and that would be that would be let's go hunting.
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: Then come back and do a podcast and talk about
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: how it actually worked in the field. Needs to happen.
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: I love that idea. I love that call me in,
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: call me in for you can make it happen, especially
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: if we're chasing some of those under the radar huge
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: Wyoming white tails that I keep hearing. No, they don't exist,
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: They're not here. We don't have any white Tale Nope,
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: there's no white tales in Wyom that wouldn't come here. Okay,
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: we'll keep that secret. Um But in the meantime between
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: now and then, for people that want to learn more
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: about whether Be or even learn more about some of
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: the concepts we talked about, it sounds like your customer
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: service team can offer a lot on that side as well.
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: How do they get in touch with you? How do
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: they how do they get some of this information? Sure, yeah,
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: weatherby dot com is gonna be obviously the first place
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: to go to. But you know, if you're interested, you know,
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: and I'm gonna put a plug in there. But if
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: you're interested in this kind of talk and um what
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: we do here at whether it be in the ballistics
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: and the rifles we have on our mark the weather
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: Be podcast where me and Adam and Luke and a
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: couple other guys from here talk about this stuff often. Um,
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: So that could be a good resource for somebody who
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: who's actively listening to podcasts check that out on our
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: Mark and then also we actually do a good job
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: at trying to relay some information on our Instagram channel.
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: Um so, so that's just Kevin has this thing called
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: cartridge Wars and he puts it up and he'll he'll
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: he'll don't tell everybody it's me. Now I'm gonna get
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: hate mail. Oh uh. Team here at weather weather Wreck
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: leadership of Kevin and and they will put a weather
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: Be cartridge versus something else and will be hundreds of
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: comments of people losing their minds. And we love it
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: because it gets people thinking about this stuff and it's
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: it's it's kind of fun. We just did to hear
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: this fall, launch a whole new Mark five line and
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: have a lot really I think a pretty brought a
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: pretty broad range of variety of different you know rifles,
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: and we go started five hundred bucks in a vanguard
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: all the way up to you know, several thousand obviously,
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: so we kind of the middle middle everywhere you check
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: it out, and we uh, you know, just we're in
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: plug period here. So we dropped also dropped the price
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: of our ammunition. It's one thing that people talk about
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: and generally is a barrier or entry to the weather
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: be family. Being a part of this family is is
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: all that amyunition is too expensive? Well, we dropped our ammunition.
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: We're we're definitely way more competitive now with some things
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: we're doing here at the company. And and that's important
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: to note that if you're looking for that high performance
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: ballistic superiority, it's well within reason now to get into
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: that into that family of products. So um, any of
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: the any of the things, just look us up on
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: us all phone numbers on the website. I don't know
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: it's a new Wyoming number. I don't even know the number.
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: So it's uh, three oh seven just came to me. Well,
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: let's you guys have an amazing new facility to there
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: and sheared and that's that's open to visitors to right.
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: Um we have a visitors center UM up front that's
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: got a bunch of cool stuff. We've got a bunch
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: of old historical memorabilia from the roy days, the days
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: where Adam ed was here. Um. And then we've also
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: got a bunch of great mounts that people have shot
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: through the years. We we do have um some rifles
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: available for people that are coming through. We sell some
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: rifles rifles, shotguns, so people can you can kind of
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: shoulder them and see what the lineups like. And then
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: you know, some accessories and amo things like that for sale,
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: and you know, it's a cool place. We get it's
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: cool just during hunting season here because see, we out
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: in California, we just didn't really have that, so we
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: kind of opened up this little visitors center and folks
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: will stop in. As funny here because these last couple
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: of months, basically about ten to two, you get guys
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: with orange hats and camo walking in, uh, because they've
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: gone out in the morning and they said, hey, let's
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: go kill time. We heard whether we moved to Shared
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: in Wyoming, and they come in and check stuff out.
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: So you just see pick up after pickup coming in
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: with a bunch of guys in camo and orange and
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: it's kind of kind of fun. So if you're out
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: this way, we're right by the Montana border. They're Shared
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: in Wyoming, come by and uh check us out. That's awesome. Well,
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: Adam Kevin, I can't thank you enough for taking the
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: time to do this. I enjoyed it, and I whether
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: you know it or not, I'm definitely gonna take you
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: up on your offer. Oh no, we're doing it. Let's
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: do already got a plan, we just won't talk about
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: it alive on this podcast. All right, I like it? Well,
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: thank you guys, and uh, best of luck the rest
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: of your hunting season too. And that is a rap I.
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: Hope you guys enjoyed this. Hopefully you learned a thing
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: or two. Hopefully you're be heading out there into the field,
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: whether it's with a bowl or a gun, whatever it is,
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: Best of luck, have some fun, shoot straight, and until
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: next time, stay Wired to Hunt. H
