- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. It is good to be back with you, Lucas. Lucas: It really is. We are episode two hundred and thirty-seven. Luna: That is a lot of episodes. We have covered so much already. Lucas: We have. Last time we talked about clothing words like shati and kofia. Luna: Right. And the sizes like kubwa and ndogo. But we only used them briefly. Lucas: Exactly. Today we want to really lock in those descriptions. We are going to use four key phrases. Luna: I am ready. Let us start with the first one. What is it? Lucas: The first phrase is ni kubwa. This means it is big. Luna: Ni kubwa. Okay. Let me try that. Ni kubwa. Lucas: Perfect. Ni kubwa. Big. Simple and strong. Luna: I can say that. Like a big house. Ni kubwa. Lucas: Yes. Or a big bag. Ni kubwa. Let us move to the opposite. Luna: The opposite of big? Is it ndogo? Lucas: Spot on. The phrase is ni ndogo. This means it is small. Luna: Ni ndogo. Let me say it again. Ni ndogo. Lucas: Very good. Ni ndogo. Small. So we have ni kubwa and ni ndogo. Luna: Big and small. That covers most things. What else do we need? Lucas: Well, sometimes size is not just width. Sometimes it is height. Length. Luna: Oh, I see. Like a long river? Or a tall person? Lucas: Exactly. In Swahili, both tall and long share a word. It is mrefu. Luna: Mrefu. Okay. So the phrase is ni mrefu? Lucas: Yes. Ni mrefu. It is tall. Or it is long. Luna: Ni mrefu. Let me practice that. Ni mrefu. Lucas: Nice. Ni mrefu. Think of a tall tree. Ni mrefu. Luna: Or a long snake. Ni mrefu. That makes sense. Lucas: It does. And what is the opposite of mrefu? Luna: Short? Like a short song? Or a short cut? Lucas: Yes. The word is fupi. So the phrase is ni fupi. Luna: Ni fupi. Let me try. Ni fupi. Lucas: Great. Ni fupi. Short. So now we have four solid phrases. Luna: Let me list them all out to make sure I have them right. Lucas: Go ahead. Take your time. Luna: First is ni kubwa. It is big. Lucas: Correct. Luna: Second is ni ndogo. It is small. Lucas: Exactly. Luna: Third is ni mrefu. It is tall or long. Lucas: You got it. Luna: And fourth is ni fupi. It is short. Lucas: Perfect. You remembered them all. That was fast. Luna: I did. It helps that they are opposites. Big and small. Tall and short. Lucas: Opposites are great for memory. Let us put them into a tiny scene. Luna: Okay. A scene. What are we looking at? Lucas: Imagine we are at a market. You see two bags. Luna: Oh, okay. One bag is huge. So I say... ni kubwa. Lucas: Yes. And the other bag is tiny. So I say... ni ndogo. Luna: Got it. Then I look at the person selling them. He is very tall. Lucas: So you point and say... ni mrefu. Luna: Right. And then I see his hat. It is very short on his head. Lucas: So you say... ni fupi. Yes. That works perfectly. Luna: I love that. It feels so natural. Ni kubwa. Ni ndogo. Lucas: It does. Let us repeat the set one more time. Slowly. Luna: Okay. Ni kubwa. Lucas: Ni kubwa. Luna: Ni ndogo. Lucas: Ni ndogo. Luna: Ni mrefu. Lucas: Ni mrefu. Luna: Ni fupi. Lucas: Ni fupi. Excellent work today. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. These words are so useful. I can use them everywhere. Lucas: They are. Whether you are talking about clothes, people, or things. Luna: Like my new shoes. They are ni kubwa? No, wait. Lucas: Are they big or small? Luna: They are ni ndogo. Very small. Cute shoes. Lucas: I bet. Well, let us take a quick moment to talk about the show itself. Luna: Sure. What is on your mind?
