- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work

- 0:18course.

- 0:26Our current series is A Mysterious Business, bringing
- 0:30ministry and marketplace wisdom together.
- 0:33Have you ever made a really good investment?
- 0:37Maybe if you have retirement savings, you manage
- 0:40them yourself, and you made a decision about
- 0:43a mutual fund to invest in or an
- 0:46exchange-traded fund, and it did really well,
- 0:48and you feel proud of yourself.
- 0:50Or maybe something a little bit more prosaic.
- 0:52Maybe you bought a really good set of
- 0:54knives, maybe those Cutco knives that are guaranteed
- 0:56forever, and you feel like this was a
- 0:58good investment, I'm getting a good return on
- 1:01the money that I put in for this
- 1:03product or for this purchase.
- 1:06I have a story like that.
- 1:07When I was a little kid, I was
- 1:09learning about the stock market, and so I
- 1:11went to my dad, and I said, Dad,
- 1:13I want to buy a stock.
- 1:14And dad said, well, you have to go
- 1:16through a broker to buy a stock, but
- 1:17I can buy a stock for you, and
- 1:19then we'll see how it does.
- 1:21And so I said, great.
- 1:21So I opened the newspaper, and I was
- 1:23looking at different listings in the finance area,
- 1:27and I saw there was a company called
- 1:29World Air that focused on trips between the
- 1:32United States and Iraq.
- 1:34And it was like industrial transportation type of
- 1:36things.
- 1:37And I was like, there is a war
- 1:38going on in Iraq.
- 1:40I bet there's going to be a big
- 1:41need for lots of industrial transportation between the
- 1:44United States and Iraq.
- 1:45So I was like, Dad, buy some of
- 1:46World Air.
- 1:47And it did really well.
- 1:48I doubled my money within the first six
- 1:50months or something like that.
- 1:52So there's elementary school age Chris profiting over
- 1:55global warmongering.
- 1:56I'm not sure that's a good thing.
- 1:57But then in high school, I thought, oh,
- 2:00man, I did this once, I can do
- 2:01it again.
- 2:01So I asked Dad, Dad, buy some stock
- 2:03and build a bear workshop.
- 2:05I looked into build a bear workshop.
- 2:07So I bought a bunch of stock, more
- 2:08money this time for my savings and build
- 2:10a bear workshop.
- 2:11This was in 2007.
- 2:12Then the 2008 crash happened.
- 2:15And guess what people don't prioritize during a
- 2:18recession?
- 2:19Really expensive, customized teddy bears.
- 2:22So so I went from having made a
- 2:23good decision in elementary school to having made
- 2:25a bad decision in high school.
- 2:28It really matters what you invest in.
- 2:31It really matters what the return on your
- 2:33investment is.
- 2:35This is obviously a business concept, but it's
- 2:38a business concept that Jesus invokes several times
- 2:41in the scriptures in order to teach a
- 2:43really important spiritual lesson.
- 2:45And so as we're in the series about
- 2:47bringing marketplace and ministry wisdom together, I want
- 2:50to take a look at this idea of
- 2:51what is a good investment.
- 2:54And I want to cite a particular story
- 2:56that's in the news right now of a
- 2:57really countercultural decision, a decision to give it
- 3:00all away.
- 3:02And I think it's a decision that's that's
- 3:04rooted in in this person's own faith in
- 3:06Jesus.
- 3:07But we'll get there.
- 3:08So first, let's go to Jesus's own teaching.
- 3:11This is in Matthew chapter 13, verses 44
- 3:14through 46.
- 3:15Jesus gives the same idea, kind of two
- 3:17slightly different versions of it in the form
- 3:19of parables.
- 3:21The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden
- 3:23in a field.
- 3:24When a man found it, he hid it
- 3:26again.
- 3:27And then in his joy, he went and
- 3:29sold all he had and bought that field.
- 3:33Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a
- 3:35merchant looking for fine pearls.
- 3:37When he found one of great value, he
- 3:39went away and sold everything he had and
- 3:42bought it.
- 3:44OK, what is an investment that would be
- 3:48worth liquidating all of your assets to obtain?
- 3:52That's what Jesus is putting on the table
- 3:54here.
- 3:54He's saying, look, there's this man and he's
- 3:57in a field.
- 3:58He realizes that the field is for sale.
- 4:00But in the field, there is a hidden
- 4:02treasure that nobody else knows about.
- 4:03So he realized this field is massively underpriced.
- 4:06There is going to be a huge ROI
- 4:08on this field.
- 4:09This is like an ancient Near Eastern version
- 4:11of like those people that buy abandoned storage
- 4:15units, hoping that there's some priceless antique inside.
- 4:18And they find the big score and it's
- 4:20it's worth, you know, thousands of time, whatever
- 4:22they paid for the lot of junk that
- 4:24it was presumed to be.
- 4:25That's what Jesus is saying.
- 4:26He's saying there might be this field.
- 4:28Everybody thinks it's just a bunch of dirt.
- 4:29But really, there's something immensely valuable in that
- 4:32field.
- 4:33If you knew that and you knew you
- 4:35had a corner on that information, nobody else
- 4:36realized how valuable it was.
- 4:38Would it be worth selling everything you have
- 4:41to buy that field?
- 4:43And Jesus, the answer is yes.
- 4:44Yes.
- 4:45Then in his joy, he went and sold
- 4:47all he had and bought that field.
- 4:49He was happy to sell maybe, you know,
- 4:52his small house.
- 4:53He was happy to sell his animals.
- 4:55He was happy to sell some of his
- 4:58nicer clothes.
- 4:58He was happy to sell his jewelry.
- 5:00You got to imagine maybe this guy's going
- 5:01and talking to his wife and saying, hon,
- 5:03we got to get rid of those bracelets.
- 5:05We got to get rid of those earrings.
- 5:06Don't worry.
- 5:07Don't worry.
- 5:08We'll be able to buy even better one
- 5:09soon.
- 5:10But we got to we got to get
- 5:11the money together for this down payment on
- 5:13this land right now.
- 5:15Right.
- 5:16And apparently, you know, if this if this
- 5:18was a married man in our imagined episode,
- 5:20he brought the family together.
- 5:22They sold everything they had and they bought
- 5:24the field.
- 5:25And it was a good investment.
- 5:28Jesus tells the same story again, but this
- 5:30time it's a little less accidental.
- 5:32Right.
- 5:32So that was just somebody who happened upon
- 5:35the treasure.
- 5:35But he says that the kingdom of heaven
- 5:37is like a merchant looking for fine pearls.
- 5:40So this is somebody who does investing.
- 5:42This is somebody who's keeping an eye out
- 5:44for investments.
- 5:45So he's thinking of a contemporary analogy, something
- 5:48that just hit the news today.
- 5:49The day I'm recording this is the sale
- 5:51of the Los Angeles Lakers.
- 5:53So there's a there's a businessman named Mark
- 5:55Walter, the CEO of a financial firm called
- 5:58Guggenheim.
- 6:00Lots and lots of money in his life.
- 6:02And he likes investing in sports teams.
- 6:05And so he bought the Lakers about a
- 6:08year ago for 10 billion dollars.
- 6:11OK, now you got to ask, what would
- 6:12motivate somebody to do that?
- 6:14Well, again, in the ancient Near East, looking
- 6:16for fine pearls, what is a good pearl?
- 6:19What is a pearl that even if I
- 6:20have to spend a lot for it, I
- 6:23know that I'll be able to sell it
- 6:24again for even more because of how fine
- 6:27it is.
- 6:27I know how to read the quality of
- 6:29the pearl when I'm looking at.
- 6:30That's how Mark Walter is with sports teams.
- 6:32He's looking at the Lakers and he's like,
- 6:34I can see the cultural and the financial
- 6:37influence of the Lakers in the world of
- 6:39sports, in the world of entertainment.
- 6:41And even though I'm spending 10 billion dollars,
- 6:43I think it's going to be a good
- 6:44investment.
- 6:45And guess what?
- 6:46Mark Walter was right, because just today they
- 6:49announced that Josh Kushner, another investor, and Bob
- 6:52Iger, the former CEO of Disney, are teaming
- 6:55up to buy it from Mark Walter for
- 6:5812.5 billion dollars.
- 7:01OK, so so think about that return on
- 7:03investment.
- 7:04Mark Walter spends 10 billion dollars.
- 7:06One year later, he sells for 12.5
- 7:09billion dollars.
- 7:09That's a 2.5 billion dollar profit on
- 7:1210 billion.
- 7:13That is a 25 percent return in only
- 7:16one year.
- 7:16That is a massively successful investment.
- 7:19Now I'm like, oh, maybe I should look
- 7:20at this Guggenheim place.
- 7:21Mark Walter seems to know what he's doing
- 7:23with money and investments, right?
- 7:25This is what Jesus is talking about.
- 7:26Somebody that has the eye of a connoisseur,
- 7:30somebody that can evaluate something and see what's
- 7:32really valuable here, even if other people miss
- 7:35it.
- 7:36OK, but what is Jesus saying with all
- 7:39this?
- 7:40He's saying, what is the kingdom of heaven
- 7:42like?
- 7:43So the kingdom of heaven is like this
- 7:46treasure hidden in a field.
- 7:47The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant
- 7:50looking for fine pearls.
- 7:52We know because Jesus has revealed it to
- 7:55us that the kingdom of heaven is the
- 7:58blue chip stock, that the kingdom of heaven
- 8:00is what is worth selling everything we have
- 8:03to obtain.
- 8:05Pastor, I love John Ortberg.
- 8:07He was talking about passages like these once.
- 8:09And he said, you got to wonder, why
- 8:10does Jesus use money so often to talk
- 8:13about the kingdom?
- 8:14And he said, because for most of us,
- 8:16money is the easiest experience we have of
- 8:19unforced desire.
- 8:21You don't have to twist people's arms to
- 8:23get them to take money, right?
- 8:25We just want money.
- 8:26We know that we can get stuff with
- 8:27money.
- 8:28We're drawn to money.
- 8:28It's unforced desire.
- 8:31And John Ortberg was saying, that's how Jesus
- 8:33wants us to think about the kingdom.
- 8:36If we saw how valuable the kingdom really
- 8:38was, we would be drawn to it with
- 8:40unforced desire.
- 8:42We would willingly give up anything we have
- 8:45in order to get that kingdom.
- 8:48And then John went on to say, in
- 8:50a sense, it really is this simple.
- 8:52You just have to want the kingdom of
- 8:53God more than you want anything else.
- 8:57That's it.
- 8:58That's the Christian life.
- 8:59That's the gospel.
- 9:00That's everything that Jesus came to teach us
- 9:03can be summarized right there.
- 9:04You just have to want the kingdom of
- 9:05God more than you want anything else.
- 9:09It's that simple and it's that challenging.
- 9:12Because what what do we do?
- 9:14We get distracted.
- 9:15We look at other things besides the kingdom
- 9:17of God and we think this is more
- 9:18valuable.
- 9:18We look at the kingdom and we say,
- 9:20ah, is it really valuable or is it
- 9:22just a pile of dirt?
- 9:24Is it just a bunch of junk in
- 9:26a storage unit?
- 9:27It was a sports team that's going to
- 9:28get worse rather than better.
- 9:30But those who have eyes to see can
- 9:33see, yes, yes, it's worth selling everything.
- 9:37OK, so now I want to turn and
- 9:38just look at a wonderful example from the
- 9:40business world of someone who's thinking this way,
- 9:42who's thinking about what really matters, what has
- 9:45value and thinking of our quote from Dallas
- 9:48Willard, that business is a structure of love
- 9:51in the kingdom of God.
- 9:53This raises a really important question.
- 9:54What about succession?
- 9:56What happens when somebody who has led the
- 9:59business is going to move on?
- 10:00They're going to retire or maybe even pass
- 10:02away.
- 10:03How do you keep the structure of love
- 10:06at the core of that business?
- 10:07And the same way that person has done.
- 10:08It's a stewardship question, right?
- 10:10Like one person has stewarded the gifts of
- 10:13God to use this business to promote the
- 10:14common good in really powerful ways.
- 10:17How can we make sure the next generation
- 10:19are going to steward it equally well?
- 10:21OK, so the story I want to cite
- 10:23comes from The New York Times.
- 10:25This was released a while back in July,
- 10:28so just a few weeks ago as I'm
- 10:30recording this.
- 10:31And the business owner is a gentleman named
- 10:34Eddie Smith, Jr. Eddie Smith, Jr., he owns
- 10:38a company called Grady White Boats.
- 10:40So he didn't found it, but it was
- 10:41kind of a failing company when he took
- 10:43it over when he was relatively young.
- 10:45And then he and his family worked really,
- 10:47really hard for decades and turned it into
- 10:49this incredibly profitable venture.
- 10:51But it wasn't just a profitable venture.
- 10:54Eddie Smith, Jr., also because of his faith,
- 10:57really cares about how he treats his employees.
- 10:59And so he was thinking about this in
- 11:01terms of how can we keep this thing
- 11:03going to the next generation?
- 11:05But then in 2020, his wife, Jo Alison,
- 11:07passed away.
- 11:08And then in 2021, his son Chris passed
- 11:11away.
- 11:11So he no longer had a next generation
- 11:13in his family to pass this to.
- 11:16And so now I'll start quoting from this
- 11:18The New York Times article.
- 11:21After the deaths of his wife and son,
- 11:23Mr. Smith was forced to reconsider his succession
- 11:25planning.
- 11:27He first hired an investment banker to explore
- 11:29a sale of the company.
- 11:31Offers came in, including several for around 400
- 11:33million dollars.
- 11:35But Mr. Smith didn't believe that any of
- 11:37the potential buyers would retain the company's culture.
- 11:41Grady White offers its 350 employees extensive benefits,
- 11:45which include generous retirement plan funding, a profit
- 11:48sharing plan, financial literacy programs, on-site health
- 11:51care and a company chaplain.
- 11:53Preserving these perks was a major reason Mr.
- 11:55Smith decided to give the company to a
- 11:57purpose trust.
- 12:00I had no confidence that a new owner
- 12:02would keep that kind of culture going, Mr.
- 12:04Smith said.
- 12:05This company has a soul and I didn't
- 12:07want to lose that.
- 12:10OK, this is such a beautiful example, so
- 12:13one, it's beautiful because of what has already
- 12:16been built.
- 12:17This is not just a company focused on
- 12:18the bottom line of profits.
- 12:20This is a company that really cares about
- 12:22how it treats its people.
- 12:23It's giving people really good health benefits, financial
- 12:26literacy, education, profit sharing.
- 12:28So Mr. Smith, right, he understands even though
- 12:32this company is making money, that money shouldn't
- 12:34just go back into my pocket.
- 12:35It should go into the pockets of the
- 12:36laborers, the people that are making it so
- 12:38successful.
- 12:38Beautiful vision of shared fruit of labor.
- 12:42And he even has a chaplain at the
- 12:44company.
- 12:45So, again, you can sense he has this
- 12:47care about people's practical needs, but he also
- 12:48wants there to be opportunity.
- 12:50If somebody is open to pursuing something with
- 12:52the Lord, there's an opportunity right there in
- 12:54the workplace for them to ask some questions
- 12:56and get some care.
- 12:57So this is incredible in terms of what's
- 12:59already been built.
- 13:00But then what's also incredible is that Mr.
- 13:03Smith realizes what good is 400 million dollars
- 13:07going to do me at this point in
- 13:08my life?
- 13:08He's planning for his transition from this life
- 13:11to the next.
- 13:12Right.
- 13:12You can't take it with you.
- 13:14Why would he sell the company for 400
- 13:15million dollars?
- 13:16It's not like he's going to massively change
- 13:17his lifestyle or something in the last few
- 13:19months or years of his life.
- 13:21No, he's like, what is way more valuable
- 13:23to me than 400 million dollars in my
- 13:26pocket is to make sure that this company
- 13:29will continue as, I would say, a structure
- 13:33of love in the kingdom of God, or
- 13:34as he says, this company has a soul
- 13:37and I didn't want to lose that.
- 13:39He's so focused on maintaining it.
- 13:41And so what does he do?
- 13:41He finds out about this financial structure called
- 13:44a purpose trust.
- 13:46And the New York Times article digs into
- 13:48that more if you're interested in learning about
- 13:49what a purpose trust is.
- 13:50But it's basically a way of saying, here's
- 13:53something that has a purpose.
- 13:54In this case, a company.
- 13:55We are putting it into a trust to
- 13:57maintain that purpose into the future and prevent
- 14:00it from ever being sold to anyone that
- 14:02would not honor that purpose.
- 14:04Isn't that cool?
- 14:06What a cool concept, right?
- 14:08Now, that doesn't mean that selling a company
- 14:09is wrong.
- 14:10We had Joe Slawek on for an interview
- 14:13a few episodes ago.
- 14:14He sold his company for a great price
- 14:17to McCormick.
- 14:18And as far as I know, the culture
- 14:19that he helped build there is still being
- 14:21honored.
- 14:21Right.
- 14:21So it's not like this is a commercial
- 14:23for purpose trusts.
- 14:25This is an example of someone who sees
- 14:28the value of the pearl of great price.
- 14:31Right.
- 14:31Right.
- 14:32Eddie Smith, Jr. He sees what God is
- 14:34doing in this company, which he has been
- 14:36involved in for decades, and he sees that's
- 14:39what's valuable.
- 14:40More money in my pocket isn't what's valuable.
- 14:42Preserving this culture is what's valuable.
- 14:44Honoring what God has done here through this
- 14:46business is what's valuable.
- 14:48How can I go and sell everything that
- 14:50I have and get that?
- 14:52How can I go and pass on a
- 14:55$400 million offer and preserve the soul of
- 14:59the company?
- 15:01Beautiful example.
- 15:02So as we think about what Jesus is
- 15:05inviting us into, he's saying, sell it all.
- 15:08Give it all away.
- 15:09Pay attention to what really matters.
- 15:11And what really matters is the kingdom of
- 15:12God.
- 15:13So I want you to think in your
- 15:15work, what really matters?
- 15:17In your work, how is the kingdom of
- 15:19God breaking in?
- 15:20How are you caring for the common good
- 15:22of your community or caring for your, your
- 15:24colleagues and your work relationships?
- 15:26How are you being present with the spirit
- 15:28of Christ in just the day to day
- 15:30of getting the work done?
- 15:31How can you make sure that's what you
- 15:33focus on?
- 15:34Maybe you have a decision coming up.
- 15:36Uh, if you're a business owner about succession,
- 15:37or if you hold a job, maybe about
- 15:40switching roles, don't just think about more money
- 15:43in your pocket.
- 15:43Just don't just think about how to get
- 15:45the highest price or the highest salary in
- 15:47your next job change.
- 15:48Think about how can I sell it all?
- 15:51How can I give it all away for
- 15:52what really matters?
- 15:54So you won't be disappointed.
- 15:57Lord Jesus, thank you that you help us
- 16:00see what's a truly good investment.
- 16:03Guide our thoughts, guide our work that we
- 16:06would give it all away for the sake
- 16:09of your kingdom, right in the work that
- 16:11we have before us today, Jesus do your
- 16:14work in us as we do our work
- 16:16with you.
- 16:17Amen.
- 16:21Thanks for listening.
