- 0:02Speaker 1: We're back. It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of
- 0:05Fame broadcaster a voice of the Texas Longhards Craig Way.
- 0:26Speaker 2: On Thursday here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the
- 0:28Zone and continue to draw closer to this matchup between
- 0:34Texas and Georgia. Last hour, we heard some of the
- 0:38comments from today's earlier zoom media availability with Longwarts head
- 0:43coach Steve Sarkigan. Here's some more comments from sark one.
- 0:49Sark was asked about this feeling of camaraderie that seems
- 0:54to exist. You know, we hear the players talk about
- 0:59this quite often, about how much fun they have together.
- 1:05Last night on Long One Weekly when we did the recording,
- 1:09and you can hear it tonight here on the Zone
- 1:11at seven o'clock, sark talked about that fun thing and
- 1:15wanting to have fun, and he said the coaches also
- 1:18get a great deal of enjoyment out of as well.
- 1:20They have a lot of fun. So sark was asked
- 1:22about this feeling of camaraderie he has with the other
- 1:26coaches at Texas.
- 1:27Speaker 3: I love it. I love all of our head coaches.
- 1:30I love all of our teams and sports that we have.
- 1:32I think CDC has done an incredible job of assembling
- 1:35the best coaching coaching staff in the country, and you know,
- 1:39we go on a head coaches retreat once a year
- 1:41into I'm just somewhat in awe of, you know, the
- 1:44successes that they've had in their various sports, the way
- 1:48they motivate their teams to perform and their athletes to perform.
- 1:52We do have some great camaraderie amongst the head coaches.
- 1:56Vic and I have grown pretty close, you know, We've
- 2:00had to go on some different speaking tours together and
- 2:02different things. I really appreciate the way his teams play
- 2:05and I used to bring that up to our team
- 2:07and I first got here about how hard our women's
- 2:09basketball team played and the intensity in which they played
- 2:12the game. And I think that's a byproduct of who
- 2:15Vick Schaefer is. And so for him to come around
- 2:18and be around us at the Michigan game, I thought
- 2:20was awesome. I know our coaching staff and our players
- 2:22loved having him so, but that's no different than a
- 2:25lot of the other coaches that we have here. I mean,
- 2:27Jared's done a fantastic job. Flow has done an amazing job.
- 2:31Angie's kicking butt. So everybody, everybody's doing great, and I
- 2:34think that that's inspiring to all of us to hold
- 2:37up to the standard of excellence around here.
- 2:39Speaker 2: By the way, we're going to hear from Vic Shaffer
- 2:41coming up next segment, coming off SEC Women's basketball media day.
- 2:46Now back to the boxing analogies we talked about that
- 2:49last hour because Sark is a fan of boxing, so
- 2:52he's asked again about the boxing analogies and does he
- 2:56use these analogies and examples of momentum swings in fights
- 3:04to his team with a game against Georgia coming up.
- 3:07Speaker 3: I would probably say what you're saying is correct a bowl.
- 3:11You know, if a guy needs to hold onto the
- 3:12ball better, then that's probably correct able. There's probably some fundamentals, yeah,
- 3:18I think so. You know, we talk a lot about
- 3:21you know, especially when two good teams play. You know,
- 3:23we're going to make our plays, they're going to make
- 3:25their plays. You know, playing the next snap is so critical,
- 3:30critical fighting the next round, you know, finishing the round,
- 3:35getting up off the mat when you do get knocked down,
- 3:37and getting your getting regrouped. And so I think that's
- 3:39why it's really important when adversity strikes that we stay
- 3:42really tight together as a team, we stay really positive,
- 3:46we fix the issues that we have collectively on the sidelines.
- 3:49It's not about one person, it's about how can all
- 3:51of us fix something that has occurred so that we
- 3:54can go play better as we move forward, we can
- 3:57fight better right in rounds three, four, and five, whatever
- 3:59that looks like. So I do think it's there's a
- 4:02lot of parallels to it. Everybody loves a great fight
- 4:05and loves entertainment. Nobody likes the knockout right early on
- 4:09the Mike Tyson thirty seconds and in type stuff. But
- 4:12in reality, when when two good teams, when two good
- 4:15fighters step into the ring or step on the field,
- 4:17it's usually a twelve roundabout and and you know, whether
- 4:21it's a decision, a split decision, you know, whatever that
- 4:24looks like is generally because it was, there was a
- 4:26lot of kind of you know, momentum swings throughout the fight,
- 4:29and the scorecards were what they were.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Now, he mentioned earlier because somebody asked him a little
- 4:34bit about turnovers, So to come back to that, our
- 4:40turnovers and start mentioned this again last night on the
- 4:43show taping that I'm not pleased with the turnovers that
- 4:48we have had. They've done a good job in getting
- 4:50some turnovers as well in the in the turnover ratios
- 4:52plus four to Texas. By the way, George is a
- 4:55minus one right now, and that's because George and getting
- 5:00many turnovers to offset the ones they have committed. But
- 5:04even if Texas had gained one hundred turnovers, the ones
- 5:08that have been committed by the offense are not to
- 5:12the head coaches liking. So he was asked, are turnovers
- 5:16in these specific instances, with this specific team, in this
- 5:21specific season, are they correctable or is it just a
- 5:25simple lack of execution.
- 5:27Speaker 3: I would probably say what you're saying is correctable. You know,
- 5:31if a guy needs to hold onto the ball better,
- 5:33then that's probably correctable. There's probably some fundamentals and techniques
- 5:37that we can improve upon, I think naturally. You know,
- 5:40quarterback decision making is something that we can improve upon.
- 5:44A runner in the open field, understanding that somebody might
- 5:48be coming from behind to punch that rip that ball
- 5:51out right before you score a touchdown is something that
- 5:53we can improve upon. That's just being conscious of cognizant
- 5:57of where you're at on the field. So opinion. All
- 6:00turnovers are are to some degree, you know, we can
- 6:04fix them. The goal is that we don't continue to
- 6:08make some of those same mistakes.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Right that.
- 6:10Speaker 3: If the ball is loose, how do we get it tighter?
- 6:13The decision making is not great, how do we make
- 6:15it better? If balls are getting tipped at the line
- 6:18of scrimmage, how do we get their hands down? So
- 6:20all those things we try to try to apply the
- 6:23things that as coaches to try to improve upon that
- 6:26to get that number down.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Take it from me on something here, And that is
- 6:34one thing that that Sark has a very low takes
- 6:40a very dim view of. Are not fixing correctible things?
- 6:45In other words, if his team or a portion of
- 6:49his team continues to make the same mistakes over and over,
- 6:54that's the thing I hear about, Like at the end
- 6:56of the practice when he's got the team gathered around
- 6:58on the practice field, when he talks talks about improve
- 7:00let's not go back and do the same thing. We're
- 7:03going to make mistakes. I saw mistakes on the practice
- 7:06field today. I don't expect to see those mistakes tomorrow.
- 7:10You improve from that so that you don't continue to
- 7:14make those mistakes. That's a big thing with him is
- 7:18correcting the mistakes with technique and repetition and the concentration
- 7:25in all of those things. He was asked about the
- 7:27injuries Trevor Goosby, backup offensive lineman, and Isaiah Bond, most
- 7:31notably those two guys. We already know that Derek Williams
- 7:33is out for the rest of the year after his injury,
- 7:36and he was asked about those two guys, Trevor Gooseby
- 7:39and Isaiah Bond.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Yeah, Derek's obviously out. I thought we announced that Trevor
- 7:44will be out this game Goozby, and I would imagine
- 7:48tonight we'll upgrade Isaiah to probable for the game.
- 7:54Speaker 2: He was listed as questionable. By the way, did you
- 7:58notice you noticed that the Longers had a backup punter
- 8:01out there last Saturday? And when when at first when
- 8:11they trotted out to punt on that second possession, I
- 8:13said Michael Kern, because Kern was no longer on the
- 8:15injured list after he'd been the list as questionable, And
- 8:19all I could see was the nine, but it was
- 8:21forty nine, not thirty nine. It was Ian Ratliffe walk
- 8:25On who punted, and he did pretty well. But the
- 8:28reason why Kern was removed from the injured list was
- 8:32he didn't get in the ball game. He still held
- 8:35on field goals and extra points, he just didn't punt.
- 8:39So his is an ankle and they're hoping that he'll
- 8:42be okay to go. And if he can't go, then
- 8:44Ratlift would would draw the duty again on that. Quinn
- 8:50us has played in a lot of big games. We
- 8:51know that, and Steve Sarkisian has coached in a lot
- 8:58of big gus and they've and they've been together or
- 9:00head coach and quarterback in some of these same games. This,
- 9:05by the way, what I'm about to tell you is
- 9:07the now new recurring question that's coming up for Sark.
- 9:11It's about this big game thing for Quinn and big
- 9:15game thing for Sark because we can think back to
- 9:19the two Alabama games obviously, and the Big twelve championship
- 9:24game and the playoff semifinal Sugar Bowl game, those kinds
- 9:29of things. And with the amount this particular question was
- 9:34about the relationship of quarterback and head coach, they're pretty tight,
- 9:38I can tell you. So Sark was asked about with
- 9:42this growing amount of big games that Quinn viewers has
- 9:46played in with Sark as the head coach. How is
- 9:53that affected the relationship and the growth in the relationship.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Quinn and I, you know, three years together with the
- 10:00same quarterback, it's just you get to know one another.
- 10:03You get to know a feel. I have a much
- 10:05better feel today of the stuff he likes in certain
- 10:08situations than I did in year one. I think he
- 10:11has a better feel for me of the things that
- 10:14I like to call in certain situations better than he
- 10:17did in year one. I think we can we can
- 10:20fix issues quickly. And he is understanding what I'm meaning
- 10:24when I'm saying things to him now more than ever
- 10:27with the headset, when I can talk to him briefly
- 10:29in between plays, and so I think all those things
- 10:31are beneficial for us. You know, time on task together
- 10:35has been has been something that that we've been. We've
- 10:38been through some fires together, some good, some not so good.
- 10:41I think there have been some great learning experiences. But again,
- 10:45have the have the utmost confidence in him that, uh,
- 10:48you know, he's gonna he's gonna show up when his
- 10:50numbers called here Saturday night.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Okay, all right, so there's some comments from long worn
- 10:56said coach Steve Sarkisian and and we'll hear some more
- 10:59from sark coming up next hour as well. Coming up
- 11:03next during this hour, we turn our attention to basketball.
- 11:08Next hour, we'll hear from Rodney Terry Long, warn men's coach.
- 11:11But up next we're gonna hear from Vic Shaeffer, the
- 11:13coach of the Texas women's team. The Longhorns will open
- 11:16the season rank fourth in the nation. They are picked
- 11:21to finish second in the SEC, behind defending national champion
- 11:27in South Carolina, so we'll hear from Vic Shaeffer talking
- 11:31about that. Of course, he's got a largely healthy group.
- 11:34There are some players who are still trying to get
- 11:36healthy and regular for the start of the regular season,
- 11:39but his main weapons, Madison Booker and Rory Harmon will
- 11:45be ready to go. They were. They accompanied coach Schaeffer
- 11:51to Birmingham for the SEC Basketball Media Days, So we'll
- 11:58hear from Vic shaf for talking about his team and
- 12:01about the upcoming inaugural SEC season for Texas women's basketball.
- 12:06That's next when we continue on Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 12:09under the Zone and the iHeart Radio app.
