- 0:00Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:06podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:11I'm our host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to
- 0:14you by that great news podcast. Why should you listen?
- 0:18Because good news should be heard.
- 0:21And the link is right here in the show notes.
- 0:25Today's quote is another one from James Clear, author of
- 0:30Atomic Habits, one of the best selling books on human behavior
- 0:34ever written, with over 25,000,000 copies sold worldwide
- 0:39and a man who has spent his career studying not just what
- 0:43people do, but why it matters. He once said the secret is not
- 0:49to find the meaning of life, but to use your life to make things
- 0:55that are meaningful. Humanity has been searching for
- 0:59the meaning of life for as long as there have been humans to
- 1:02search for things. Philosophers, theologians,
- 1:06scientists, poets, every tradition, every era, every
- 1:11culture has taken a turn at the question.
- 1:15And the answer, after all that searching remains as elusive as
- 1:21it was at the beginning, clears insight, is that we've been
- 1:25asking the wrong question. The search for meaning, treated
- 1:30as a discovery problem, something to be found if only
- 1:34you look in the right place, puts you in a fundamentally
- 1:38passive position. Meaning is out there somewhere,
- 1:43you just haven't located it yet. And so you wait, You read, you
- 1:50search, you hope it'll announce itself when you finally looked
- 1:53in the right direction. But meaning is not found.
- 1:58It's made clear states that it is the act of creating the life
- 2:03you want in big and small ways that makes you feel alive and
- 2:09gives life that extra meaning. The fact that you can hold a
- 2:13vision in your mind and then, however imperfectly, bend
- 2:19reality a few degrees in that direction.
- 2:22That's the shift from passive searching to active making, from
- 2:27waiting for meaning to arrive to building it through the work you
- 2:32commit to the relationships you invest in, the things you
- 2:36create, that problems you choose to solve, the people you choose
- 2:42to serve. Think about the moments in your
- 2:44own life that had felt most meaningful.
- 2:47Almost none of them were moments of passive discovery.
- 2:51They were moments of making things, A project completed, a
- 2:55connection deepen, a challenge met, something brought into the
- 3:01world that wasn't there before. The meaning wasn't waiting for
- 3:05you. You created it through the act
- 3:08of showing up and doing whatever The thing is for you.
- 3:13This reframes everything. The question isn't what is the
- 3:17meaning of life? A question that can paralyze you
- 3:21indefinitely. The question is, what meaningful
- 3:25things am I making with my life right now?
- 3:28And that question has an answer you can act on today.
- 3:33So here's the question What meaningful thing are you
- 3:36currently making? Or what meaningful thing have
- 3:40you been waiting to start making while you wait to feel more
- 3:44certain about the larger purpose?
- 3:47Because the secret, as Clear says, isn't in the finding, it's
- 3:52in the making. And the making can start today.
- 3:57Stop searching for the meaning of your life.
- 4:00Start making things that are meaningful, and then the meaning
- 4:06will follow. That's it for today.
- 4:09I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
