- 0:48[SPEAKER_01]: Hey everybody Brian Smith here with the INT series and your daily influence and today's a little different because this is episode 800 of daily influence.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_01]: 800 episodes, 800 opportunities to talk about leadership, business, culture, communication, responsibility, gratitude, resilience, and the choices that we make every day.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_01]: Both the ones I've had with you alone the ones we've had with our guests and the ones Greg has had with her guests There's one idea that continues to rise above everything else, and that's you
- 1:32[SPEAKER_01]: are the influence.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_01]: Not sometimes, not just when you're leading a meeting or managing employees or raising a family or making an important decision, you are always influencing.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_01]: The real question is, is, what are you doing with that influence?
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: Surrelevant spend episode 800, looking backward, I want to use this milestone to talk about what I believe matters going forward.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_01]: And the first thing is, is that influence is constant.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_01]: It's always happening.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: We're either influencing ourselves, we're either being influenced or we're influencing others, or all of them at the same time.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_01]: Intentional influence is a choice.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_01]: One of the biggest lessons reinforced through 800 episodes is that influences it's something we turn on enough.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_01]: Every interaction creates influence.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_01]: what we say influences people.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_01]: But we don't say influences people.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_01]: Our actions, our inaction, even in difference creates influence.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_01]: That's why I think we've made leadership unnecessarily complicated sometimes.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_01]: We searched for the newest leadership philosophy, management technique, or business trend.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_01]: One of the most important questions is much simpler.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_01]: What influence am I creating right now in this moment?
- 3:04[SPEAKER_01]: That's where self-awareness becomes so important.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_01]: We have to understand ourselves well enough to recognize how our behaviors affect other people.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_01]: But awareness alone is enough eventually awareness has to become intentional action.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_01]: That is the difference between simply having influence and taking responsibility for it.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_01]: But responsibility is where influence becomes leadership.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_01]: We've talked quite a bit recently about responsibility.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_01]: And there's a reason for that.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_01]: I believe responsibility is where influence becomes leadership.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_01]: Leadership isn't a title.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_01]: It isn't authority.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_01]: It isn't how many people report to you.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: Leadership begins when we accept responsibility for the influence we create.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: There's a mean where responsible for every reaction another person has.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_01]: We cannot control other people.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_01]: But we can control our words.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_01]: we can control our own behavior, and we can own our decisions, and we can own what happens when our influence produces an outcome we didn't intend.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: That distinction matters.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_01]: Good intentions are important, but as we've discussed recently, good intentions are enough.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_01]: Responsible influence requires follow-through, requires consistency.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_01]: Her requires us to look at the outcomes and ask, did my influence actually produce what I intended it to produce?
- 4:37[SPEAKER_01]: And if it didn't, responsible leadership means we adjust.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_01]: That is probably the biggest evolution in my thinking.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: Influence cannot just be something we talk about.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_01]: It has to become something we build.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_01]: That's where the I&Tem series and smart management come together.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_01]: If we want healthier organizations, stronger leaders, more accountable teams, and better businesses,
- 5:03[SPEAKER_01]: We have to create systems that support the behaviors we say we value.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_01]: Clarity matters.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_01]: Expectations matter.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_01]: Communication matters.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_01]: Accountability matters.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_01]: Processes matter.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_01]: Culture matters.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_01]: In fact, it may be the most important.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_01]: An increase in money.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_01]: This technology and artificial intelligence change how quickly we can access information and make decisions.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_01]: Human judgment and responsible influence matter even more.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_01]: Technology can make us faster.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_01]: Systems can make us more consistent.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: Data can make us better informed.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_01]: But none of these things determine what kind of influence we choose to create.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_01]: We do.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_01]: That's why I believe the next evolution of leadership isn't simply about becoming a better leader.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: It's about recognizing I and the influence.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_01]: And then building organization where everyone understands that same responsibility.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_01]: Look, 800 episodes later, I don't think the message has become more complicated.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_01]: I think it has become clearer.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_01]: You are always influencing.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_01]: The person beside you is influencing.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_01]: The people you lead are influencing.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_01]: Your organization is influencing.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_01]: And every day gives us another opportunity to decide what we're going to do with that influence.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_01]: So as we move beyond episode 800,
- 6:37[SPEAKER_01]: That's why I want to keep challenging all of us.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_01]: Find your influence.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_01]: Understand how you're affecting the people and environments around you.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_01]: Be your influence.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: Take responsibility for the choices and behaviors that are uniquely yours and build your influence, create the habits, systems, relationships, and organizations that allow positive and responsible influence to continue long after the individual moment as passed.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_01]: Because in the end, you are the influence.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_01]: I'm Brian Smith with the I&Team series and this has been episode 800 of your daily influence.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for being part of the journey and as always join us every day.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_01]: Have a good one.
