- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that Uh, Chuck Norris was chasing the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
- 0:05Speaker 2: The rex was not chasing the jeep.
- 0:08Speaker 3: Murray, Murray, you there.
- 0:09Speaker 2: You love sandwiches. Huh, Let's go to uh eighty.
- 0:13Speaker 4: It was.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Wow that Prime time. Maybe I had a crush on
- 0:18Speaker 2: Betty Rubbell.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I honestly, until after the segment ended and we went
- 0:22Speaker 1: to a commercial break, had no idea that Jonathan Coachman
- 0:25Speaker 1: was black.
- 0:25Speaker 2: He caught them the game last night, although they won
- 0:28Speaker 2: the game. You're listening to Stegattson Company.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Mike Golick is with us here on Stegottson Company, presented
- 0:34Speaker 1: by FanDuel and the FanDuel Sportsbook. It's the final day
- 0:37Speaker 1: of March. But Mike, boy, have we had a March.
- 0:44Speaker 3: It's it's been full, that's for sure. It has been full.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yes, it has. How's your bracket doing, by the.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Way, bracket's doing ugly. One side of one side of
- 0:55Speaker 3: my bracket's doing okay. The other side of my bracket
- 0:58Speaker 3: is really bad. I do have Michigan and Arizona. Iways
- 1:04Speaker 3: had that right, but I got obliterated on the other
- 1:07Speaker 3: side of my bracket.
- 1:08Speaker 1: I would say you went about twelve million other people
- 1:11Speaker 1: have Michigan and Arizona probably more I'll take you over there.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Yes, And it seems like while Arizona and Yukon was
- 1:19Speaker 3: a good game in the regular season. So but I
- 1:22Speaker 3: think the Arizona Michigan winner is going to win it all.
- 1:25Speaker 3: I really do. I think both those teams are just
- 1:27Speaker 3: too good.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Was Duke was Duke won a year final four selections there?
- 1:32Speaker 3: No, No, I had actually Michigan State. I had Michigan
- 1:36Speaker 3: State Houston.
- 1:38Speaker 2: I know.
- 1:41Speaker 3: The program. Yeah, yeah, how about it. Yeah, I had
- 1:45Speaker 3: Michigan State, Houston, Arizona and Michigan. So yeah, I got
- 1:49Speaker 3: obliterated on the left side of my bracket sheet put
- 1:53Speaker 3: us there.
- 1:54Speaker 2: At the end of that classic game, classic March.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Game, Yukon and Duke Duke makes just a calamity of mistakes,
- 2:01Speaker 1: will get to Caden Boozer in just a second, but
- 2:04Speaker 1: they're up nineteen. Yukon comes storming back, and now Danny
- 2:07Speaker 1: Hurley has a chance to win a third national championship,
- 2:09Speaker 1: as many as Jim Calhoun and two behind Coach k
- 2:12Speaker 1: Pretty incredible, Mike.
- 2:14Speaker 3: It really is. And I mean, really, you know, the
- 2:16Speaker 3: end of the game obviously was the most exciting part,
- 2:19Speaker 3: but the fact that Yukon came back from nineteen down
- 2:23Speaker 3: in the first half, down fifteen at halftime. You know,
- 2:26Speaker 3: the record of number one seeds up fifteen or more
- 2:29Speaker 3: at halftime in the NCAA tournament going into that game
- 2:33Speaker 3: there were one hundred and thirty four and oh what yes,
- 2:38Speaker 3: number one Seeds winning by fifteen or more points at
- 2:41Speaker 3: half at halftime was one hundred and thirty four and
- 2:44Speaker 3: oh now it's one hundred and thirty four and one.
- 2:47Speaker 3: So you got to give, obviously Yukon the credit for
- 2:50Speaker 3: coming back to even putting themselves in the position that
- 2:54Speaker 3: they were in. And then you know, Kaden Boozer, you
- 2:58Speaker 3: hold onto the ball, You'll wait to get you try
- 3:00Speaker 3: and throw it to a wide open player. I mean,
- 3:03Speaker 3: what do you do in that situation?
- 3:06Speaker 5: We asked this on the show yesterday Classic Sports Talk Radio.
- 3:10Speaker 5: Did Duke lose it or did Yukon win it?
- 3:13Speaker 3: Well, I think the classic answer to a question like
- 3:16Speaker 3: that is a little bit of both, right, I mean.
- 3:18Speaker 2: I mean it's right here, Well, that's exactly right. Well,
- 3:23Speaker 2: Taylor saying the sports radio rules is you have to
- 3:25Speaker 2: choose one. I mean, that's it.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Oh, I would say, then Yukon won it because Yukon
- 3:31Speaker 3: was Yukan was one of eighteen from three point land
- 3:34Speaker 3: and finished four of five. You know, the defense tightened up.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Obviously the shooting fell off of Duke, but Yukon still
- 3:42Speaker 3: had to score to make up that different. So I'll
- 3:45Speaker 3: always give credit to the team that came back.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I love Taylor.
- 3:49Speaker 1: This is a Hall of Fame fucking broadcaster, Mike Golik,
- 3:52Speaker 1: and he doesn't give the answer the way Taylor wants
- 3:54Speaker 1: him to answer the question, and Taylor's getting all over him.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I love it.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Yes, that's okay. That's the youth, the youth youth of
- 4:00Speaker 3: of America. Now, they just they just don't care about
- 4:03Speaker 3: the past. They just push forward.
- 4:06Speaker 4: No, my only critique was, you gave goal like two
- 4:09Speaker 4: options and then he just said a little bit of both.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Yes, listen, there's there's a reason he's the most beloved
- 4:15Speaker 1: sports talk ghost in the history of the fucking industry.
- 4:18Speaker 3: I mean, listen, technically it is both right, because one
- 4:22Speaker 3: side has to play worse than the other side has
- 4:25Speaker 3: to play better. I mean, technically I was correct, Tailor.
- 4:28Speaker 3: I hate to, you know, admonish you here publicly, but
- 4:32Speaker 3: you know, I I will give you the answer, and
- 4:35Speaker 3: I'll say more Yukon because of the comeback.
- 4:38Speaker 1: You see, he stays in the good graces of both
- 4:40Speaker 1: Duke and Yukon by answering it the way he answered it.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Tailor.
- 4:44Speaker 4: I mean, I'm still just celebrating that Duke loss.
- 4:48Speaker 3: He really is.
- 4:49Speaker 1: It's like he won a national championship sid because he
- 4:51Speaker 1: went to North Carolina.
- 4:52Speaker 3: You know, you know, there are we talk about universally
- 4:57Speaker 3: loved and universally hated teams. Talking Notre Dame, you're talking
- 5:01Speaker 3: the Yankees, You're talking the Cowboys, and you're talking Duke.
- 5:05Speaker 3: I don't know, maybe the Yankees. If there is a
- 5:10Speaker 3: team that is more cheered on more to lose than Duke,
- 5:17Speaker 3: I would say maybe the Yankees would be I think though,
- 5:19Speaker 3: I would put those two above Notre Dame and the Cowboys.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I mean, the Cowboys are right there. We actually did
- 5:26Speaker 2: this yesterday.
- 5:26Speaker 1: It was a Mount Rushmore Monday, and we drafted the
- 5:29Speaker 1: teams we love watching lose. And I won, of course,
- 5:34Speaker 1: but I took the Cowboys first. I had the first
- 5:36Speaker 1: overall pick, and I took the Cowboys and I ended
- 5:38Speaker 1: up winning.
- 5:39Speaker 3: It's the thing about them is they haven't won in
- 5:41Speaker 3: so long you almost forgot. The last time they won
- 5:44Speaker 3: was ninety six. I mean, it's been a long time
- 5:48Speaker 3: for them.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Yeah, any other teams in their teams. Because it's funny, Mike,
- 5:54Speaker 1: the entire country would have been rooting against Yukon if
- 5:58Speaker 1: they had it playing Duke.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Well, yeah, everybody's going to be rooting for Illinois, and
- 6:03Speaker 3: Illinois is a favorite in this game. Yeah, definitely, people
- 6:08Speaker 3: are rooting for Illinois.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I don't know, so help me out, because you know,
- 6:13Speaker 1: people tend to roof for the things they want to see.
- 6:15Speaker 1: They might want to see Yukon take on one of
- 6:17Speaker 1: these two teams in the finals.
- 6:18Speaker 2: I want nothing to do with Illinois. Then they'll root
- 6:21Speaker 2: against you. Cop.
- 6:22Speaker 3: That's true because Yukon did play Arizona in the regular season.
- 6:26Speaker 3: That was a one point game for a while. That
- 6:28Speaker 3: ended up being a four point I think seventy one
- 6:30Speaker 3: sixty seven win for Arizona. Michigan obviously played Illinois both
- 6:36Speaker 3: being in the Big Ten, and Michigan smoked him by
- 6:38Speaker 3: like fourteen eighty four seventy. So I don't know if
- 6:41Speaker 3: anybody wants to see that as a rematch.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Where are you and Danny Hurley?
- 6:45Speaker 1: Because I was. He's a great coach. I was fiery,
- 6:49Speaker 1: I know, but like, hey, dial it back a little bit,
- 6:52Speaker 1: you know, just a little bit. It's about the kids,
- 6:53Speaker 1: it's not about you.
- 6:54Speaker 3: You know. I think he would he realizes that. But
- 6:59Speaker 3: when the heat of the hits and the adrenalines flowing,
- 7:02Speaker 3: I don't think he can help himself. He is who
- 7:04Speaker 3: he is, you know, I don't I don't see him
- 7:06Speaker 3: change it. He is he is boy, he is out there.
- 7:09Speaker 2: But that headbutt of the referee was a foul, no,
- 7:12Speaker 2: I mean, come on, yeah.
- 7:13Speaker 3: I still don't know. And if we found out what
- 7:16Speaker 3: was actually said, was the ref actually trying because it
- 7:20Speaker 3: was so loud, trying to tell Danny, hey, there's still
- 7:23Speaker 3: time on the clock. Because Danny turned around right away
- 7:27Speaker 3: and went back to the sideline, I don't know. It
- 7:30Speaker 3: looked odd, but it looked od except it didn't because
- 7:34Speaker 3: it was Danny.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Hurley, right, Yes, Mike, it's it's I always feel bad
- 7:39Speaker 1: for athletes in the spot of Caden boozer, where I
- 7:43Speaker 1: just want teams to.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Win, and I wanted to be a great game.
- 7:45Speaker 1: I obviously wanted to be a close game, a classic
- 7:48Speaker 1: game and all that. I just don't want the games
- 7:50Speaker 1: to come down to a single play a single person,
- 7:53Speaker 1: and that person has to live with that for the
- 7:55Speaker 1: remainder of time. Uh. Caden Boozer, who we talked about
- 7:58Speaker 1: this yesterday, he made it. He made a colossal mistake.
- 8:03Speaker 1: It was a terrible turnover. It ended up costing them
- 8:05Speaker 1: the game. Shyer after the game said, there were a
- 8:08Speaker 1: ton of things that happened before that that gonna help
- 8:11Speaker 1: us win the game.
- 8:13Speaker 2: How'd you feel for Caden Boozer?
- 8:15Speaker 1: I'll play the press conference sound here after the game
- 8:17Speaker 1: in just a second, because we didn't spend enough time
- 8:20Speaker 1: admiring him for how composed he was in that situation
- 8:24Speaker 1: after the game, when being asked questions by the media
- 8:26Speaker 1: would suggests what a mature kid he is, the son
- 8:30Speaker 1: of Carlos Boozer. But how'd you feel for Kaden Boozer
- 8:32Speaker 1: as that went down?
- 8:33Speaker 3: Well, I mean, listen, you you always feel bad for
- 8:38Speaker 3: a player when they're when they're in a situation where
- 8:41Speaker 3: their mistake. You know, he had fifteen points, he was
- 8:44Speaker 3: four or five shooting six or six from six or
- 8:47Speaker 3: six from the free throw line. So I mean he
- 8:49Speaker 3: had a he had a good game. It was just
- 8:52Speaker 3: a tough turnover. It's like do you pump fake it?
- 8:56Speaker 3: Do you hold it like I said, and just get
- 8:58Speaker 3: fouled and go to the line.
- 9:00Speaker 1: And it was a one in one situation. We kind
- 9:04Speaker 1: of left that out yesterday. It was a one in
- 9:05Speaker 1: one situation. So yeah, so.
- 9:08Speaker 3: So so maybe it's not way to get fouled, right.
- 9:13Speaker 3: You know, Shire said that they they wanted to put
- 9:16Speaker 3: uh or or Danny Hurley had said they wanted to
- 9:19Speaker 3: put pressure up earlier and foul earlier. Uh, but Duke
- 9:24Speaker 3: got the ball up to where they did to Cayden,
- 9:26Speaker 3: And yeah, I mean it was it was a mistake.
- 9:29Speaker 3: And I wonder I wonder do because we always say
- 9:35Speaker 3: we feel bad for the college player, right, yes, do
- 9:38Speaker 3: people feel as bad? Throw this out in the poll.
- 9:42Speaker 3: Do people feel as bad for college players now that
- 9:47Speaker 3: they're getting paid?
- 9:48Speaker 1: They know they're getting paid, right, and now that now
- 9:51Speaker 1: that you know what college athlete is getting paid, do
- 9:54Speaker 1: you feel as bad.
- 9:55Speaker 3: For them when they make a mistake.
- 9:58Speaker 1: It's a great question, Mikeya, Do you feel as bad
- 10:01Speaker 1: for a college player now that it's so overt?
- 10:04Speaker 2: Right?
- 10:04Speaker 1: Like we appeal back the curtain. This is not suitcases
- 10:07Speaker 1: full of cash. They are paying the players. Do you
- 10:09Speaker 1: feel as bad for Kaden Boozer now as you would
- 10:12Speaker 1: have maybe five years ago?
- 10:14Speaker 3: I'm not sure that I would.
- 10:15Speaker 5: And Mike brings that up, and now I'm starting to
- 10:18Speaker 5: think about it, and I'm going, you know, I don't
- 10:20Speaker 5: feel as bad for him, and I was maybe that's why.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Right, Well that in duke. Yeah, well, I mean.
- 10:27Speaker 5: That's the problem is I'm trying to view it through
- 10:30Speaker 5: the non duke lens and I can't. It's too blue.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Notice I haven't asked hellor that question. Yeah, don't ask
- 10:36Speaker 2: me if I feel bad.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Ha ha.
- 10:42Speaker 2: I always feel bad for athletes in that spot.
- 10:44Speaker 1: I was calling a Final four for women's lacrosse when
- 10:47Speaker 1: I was at ESPN, Mike and there was it was
- 10:49Speaker 1: a classic game. It was BC in North Carolina and
- 10:52Speaker 1: someone on Carolina had an easy goal to end the
- 10:54Speaker 1: game and she missed it, and I said, oh, man,
- 10:58Speaker 1: I feel terrible for her. She's going to wake up
- 11:00Speaker 1: every single day after the remainder of her life and
- 11:03Speaker 1: have to think about that moment.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Yep.
- 11:06Speaker 2: And people got upset with me, and I was just
- 11:08Speaker 2: being honest.
- 11:08Speaker 1: I was just being truthful because that's the reality, and
- 11:11Speaker 1: Kaden News are reporters of how he acted after the game.
- 11:14Speaker 2: We'll play it again in just a second.
- 11:16Speaker 1: He's gonna wake up every single day, it doesn't matter
- 11:18Speaker 1: where he is, and he's going to be thinking about
- 11:20Speaker 1: that moment.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Yeah, oh, he absolutely is. But every pro athlete who
- 11:25Speaker 3: makes a mistake, they're going to think about it. I
- 11:28Speaker 3: don't care if they're you know, if Kaden Boozer is
- 11:31Speaker 3: what eighteen nineteen years old, If there's a pro athlete
- 11:34Speaker 3: out there that's thirty two, you know, then and they
- 11:37Speaker 3: drop a pass, or they drop an interception, or they
- 11:40Speaker 3: misa tackle something in a crucial moment, they're going to
- 11:43Speaker 3: remember it. But we don't seem to feel as bad
- 11:46Speaker 3: for the pro athlete than we do for the young
- 11:49Speaker 3: college kid. That's why I ask, Now the college kid
- 11:52Speaker 3: is flushed with money, do we still feel as bad?
- 11:56Speaker 5: Oh?
- 11:57Speaker 1: Man, I mean, they're getting paid a lot. How much
- 11:59Speaker 1: you think Kaden users getting paid? Probably a lot?
- 12:01Speaker 3: Right, see that? I don't know. That's the one thing
- 12:05Speaker 3: ni l that the whole topic has has been kept
- 12:10Speaker 3: pretty quiet as far as what players get paid.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Quite honestly, right, it's still like he's a true freshman, right,
- 12:17Speaker 1: so he's still an eighteen year old and he was
- 12:19Speaker 1: getting paid. It's that Carson Beck who's twenty five still
- 12:21Speaker 1: playing quarterback.
- 12:22Speaker 3: I agree, I agree. I mean, you definitely feel for
- 12:26Speaker 3: the person in that situation because you're right they're going
- 12:29Speaker 3: to because again most I think another reason you feel
- 12:34Speaker 3: bad for college players is two percent of them are
- 12:38Speaker 3: going to go on to the pro in their sport.
- 12:41Speaker 3: The rest are done after college. So that if you're
- 12:45Speaker 3: in your last year of college and you make that mistake,
- 12:47Speaker 3: that's your last memory of you playing that sport, because
- 12:51Speaker 3: if you're not going to go pro, So that that
- 12:53Speaker 3: also adds to it.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I am reading here that Caiden Boozer was paid, Now
- 12:58Speaker 1: I could be wrong. Seven hundred and forty seven thousand
- 13:01Speaker 1: dollars that's evaluation.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Okay, it's seven hundred and forty seven thousand dollars more
- 13:07Speaker 3: than I got paid?
- 13:11Speaker 2: Is it two point two million? Is that? Taylor? How
- 13:13Speaker 2: does this work? Explain this to me?
- 13:15Speaker 1: What is Caden Boozer getting paid by Duke University? Because
- 13:18Speaker 1: it is absolutely gon to determine whether or not I
- 13:20Speaker 1: feel bad.
- 13:23Speaker 4: So the problem with nil is none of those numbers
- 13:27Speaker 4: are public with what the schools are actually paying. What
- 13:30Speaker 4: you're looking at is on three and on three just
- 13:34Speaker 4: takes like a formula of like how many social media
- 13:37Speaker 4: followers you have your reach, and then they put a
- 13:40Speaker 4: what they think your valuation would be?
- 13:42Speaker 2: Wow, oh oh yeah.
- 13:46Speaker 3: And plus there's added there's now the revenue share that
- 13:50Speaker 3: comes from the school money that they get, and then
- 13:52Speaker 3: there's nil deal. So I mean it's tough to ever
- 13:56Speaker 3: know the true value of what somebody is getting paid.
- 13:59Speaker 1: I think the other reason people probably aren't going to
- 14:02Speaker 1: feel as bad. You can sprinkle in Duke, you could
- 14:04Speaker 1: factor in the money. But also he's Carlos Boozer's son.
- 14:07Speaker 1: He's lived a white charmed life.
- 14:08Speaker 5: You know.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Yeah, It's amazing what reasons we choose to have for
- 14:15Speaker 3: either feeling bad or not feeling bad.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Mike, you missed out, man, Jesus Christ, you have a
- 14:20Speaker 1: million followers, man.
- 14:22Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, listen, I'm I'm happy the players are
- 14:27Speaker 3: getting paid. Don't anybody look at me and say, oh god,
- 14:32Speaker 3: he's jealous of those guys. He doesn't think that. I
- 14:34Speaker 3: absolutely think they should get paid. I'm happy they're getting paid.
- 14:39Speaker 3: But it does make every athlete like me and those
- 14:42Speaker 3: that are like me that didn't get paid think about
- 14:45Speaker 3: what could have been when we were in college.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Of course, why wouldn't you.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Let's play the sounds here from Kaid and Boozer after
- 14:52Speaker 1: the game, here being asked about what happened on that
- 14:55Speaker 1: final plot great er was going through your mind in
- 15:01Speaker 1: that last.
- 15:05Speaker 5: Turned the ball over? Should have been shown with the ball.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Team season.
- 15:12Speaker 4: What did coach Sire said before enough time out, before
- 15:15Speaker 4: you guys were inbounding the ball there, we knew that
- 15:19Speaker 4: they're going.
- 15:19Speaker 3: To be sure.
- 15:23Speaker 1: I mean, that's uh, that's pretty remarkable, Mike. And now
- 15:26Speaker 1: I feel that, yes, oh.
- 15:29Speaker 3: I mean just you. But you're you're right. I don't
- 15:31Speaker 3: care how you were brought up, who your dad was.
- 15:35Speaker 3: I mean that's something that you as an individual have
- 15:37Speaker 3: to live with, as you said, have to wake up
- 15:39Speaker 3: every day. I mean, I d probably can't wait till
- 15:42Speaker 3: the season starts next year, so you can kind of
- 15:45Speaker 3: wash that because this is the last that was the
- 15:47Speaker 3: last play of the season. He's got to go through
- 15:50Speaker 3: the entire offseason thinking that that knocked them out of
- 15:54Speaker 3: the tournament. And and obviously it's like football. You know, you
- 15:57Speaker 3: sit there and you look at one plane, You're like,
- 15:59Speaker 3: oh my god, that cost you. There are plenty of
- 16:01Speaker 3: plays that you can look at that say cost you,
- 16:05Speaker 3: but one that's like that, or the end of a
- 16:08Speaker 3: football game, like I said, a drop pass or a
- 16:11Speaker 3: cought ball or whatever, it all magnifies on that one
- 16:16Speaker 3: play when it really isn't one play.
- 16:18Speaker 1: It's a great point by you because as a former athlete,
- 16:21Speaker 1: what you want to do to get that bad taste
- 16:23Speaker 1: out of your mouth is play the next day.
- 16:24Speaker 2: And he's got to wait an entire offseason here, you know,
- 16:27Speaker 2: Oh you do.
- 16:28Speaker 3: I mean all all the training, all the offseason training,
- 16:32Speaker 3: all the preseason practices, You're gonna be thinking about that play.
- 16:36Speaker 3: I mean until you start a new season.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Yeah, Taylor's wheelhouse is well, it's North Carolina or it's
- 16:44Speaker 1: it's anti Duke. Have you seen what's happened here with
- 16:47Speaker 1: John Shire Taylor? Because people are starting to question Josh.
- 16:49Speaker 1: You never want to be the guy who replaces the guy.
- 16:51Speaker 1: And this is the reason why Shire has done a
- 16:53Speaker 1: fine job, but he has lost three big games. Now
- 16:57Speaker 1: when people are starting to question whether John Shire should
- 16:59Speaker 1: be the head coach Duke.
- 17:00Speaker 2: I love it.
- 17:00Speaker 4: And what people are really questioning is if Shire can't
- 17:04Speaker 4: win with these rosters, what rosters can you win with?
- 17:10Speaker 3: Maybe he needs to scrappy roster.
- 17:12Speaker 5: Maybe he needs a bunch of you know, two stars
- 17:15Speaker 5: to come up and play together.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Yes, like the miracle on ice or something.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Yes, I mean it's it's it's again like in football,
- 17:26Speaker 3: when you have a successful coach but you haven't gotten
- 17:28Speaker 3: over the top. Who are you gonna get? Who are
- 17:31Speaker 3: you gonna get that that's better? We're talking about the
- 17:33Speaker 3: North Carolina job opening up and the Arizona coach maybe
- 17:36Speaker 3: going there. Well, Arizona is a better program than North
- 17:39Speaker 3: Carolina right now, So why would that coach leave now?
- 17:44Speaker 3: Is it more prestigious to win a national title if
- 17:47Speaker 3: you're a North Carolina head coach in Arizona head coach?
- 17:50Speaker 3: I don't know. You're raising the trophy either way, you know.
- 17:54Speaker 3: And and so it's kind of a weird, weird situation
- 17:58Speaker 3: with that.
- 17:58Speaker 1: It's all blurred because we don't know what jobs are
- 18:00Speaker 1: important to certain people. The jobs aren't the same as
- 18:03Speaker 1: they used to be. So like Kirk would not leave
- 18:05Speaker 1: Indiana for Alabama, he just wouldn't right now.
- 18:07Speaker 3: No, no, no, he absolutely would not. And and again
- 18:11Speaker 3: he's got he's got a national championship. So it's like,
- 18:15Speaker 3: where is your program?
- 18:17Speaker 2: Right? Uh?
- 18:17Speaker 1: Taylor wants Duke to get rid of Shire and wants
- 18:20Speaker 1: Carolina to hire Shire.
- 18:21Speaker 2: How about that, higher sire?
- 18:23Speaker 4: Yes, So he betrayed my confidence there when I whispered
- 18:25Speaker 4: in his ear, I said, is there a number for
- 18:29Speaker 4: Shire to go to Carolina? Like if you said Shire, well,
- 18:34Speaker 4: quadruple your your salary.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Ubert Davis would coach at Duke for free. I mean.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean listen, and while while I understand the
- 18:43Speaker 3: question Taylor, it's it's no one school is gonna especially
- 18:48Speaker 3: blue bloods like that, is going to offer that much
- 18:52Speaker 3: more than the other school. I mean, hey, they're just
- 18:55Speaker 3: not going to do it. And be Duke would come
- 18:58Speaker 3: up with money as well, not a I'm quadrupling the money.
- 19:01Speaker 3: That's not going to happen. There's just not going to
- 19:04Speaker 3: be that much disparity.
- 19:06Speaker 2: It is funny that people don't realize Arizona.
- 19:08Speaker 1: There's a gap here might between the last time Arizona
- 19:11Speaker 1: was this good and now and there's a whole generation
- 19:15Speaker 1: that they don't understand that Arizona at one point was
- 19:17Speaker 1: one of the premier jobs in America.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Holy smokes, Lude Olsen, I mean, wow, yes, so true.
- 19:24Speaker 3: National Championship with Mike Bibby Yan. Yeah exactly.
- 19:40Speaker 1: I'm looking at this NFL coaches picture from the owners
- 19:45Speaker 1: meeting and it dawned on me that unless they're wearing
- 19:48Speaker 1: a hat, a headset, or advisor, I don't recognize any
- 19:53Speaker 1: of these guys.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Well, I mean, listen, there has definitely been a shift.
- 20:00Speaker 5: Uh.
- 20:00Speaker 3: The one thing I do recognize is head coaches now
- 20:04Speaker 3: are in some of the best shape we've seen a
- 20:07Speaker 3: collective group of head coaches. Now you have to kind
- 20:11Speaker 3: of take out Andy Reid, Mike McCarthy, maybe Todd Bowles
- 20:15Speaker 3: as well, but you look at the rest of the
- 20:18Speaker 3: coaches and they're they're there, look like they're in pretty
- 20:20Speaker 3: good shape. You know. Well, we always sit there and
- 20:23Speaker 3: talk about a royal rumble and that Dan Campbell would
- 20:27Speaker 3: win all the time.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know, you know, yeah.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Demiko Ryan, I mean you got yeah, you got to.
- 20:36Speaker 3: You got a few in.
- 20:37Speaker 1: There, Yes, but I don't recognize any of them unless yeah.
- 20:42Speaker 3: It is true, it is true. Didn't they just have
- 20:45Speaker 3: their day drinking day I heard Jacob.
- 20:49Speaker 2: I mean the whole thing is a reason for a vacation.
- 20:52Speaker 3: It is, it is, Yeah, it's it's all a darty.
- 20:55Speaker 3: It's a day party because they all can't stay up
- 20:57Speaker 3: that late. They're all up late at the combo and
- 21:00Speaker 3: now they don't have to be up late.
- 21:02Speaker 2: You're familiar with that.
- 21:03Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, yeah, when's the last time you day drank?
- 21:08Speaker 3: I only prefer to day drink. Is. I don't stay
- 21:10Speaker 3: out at night. I mean, my god, I'm in bed early,
- 21:14Speaker 3: so I really only day drink now. And uh yeah,
- 21:18Speaker 3: and I don't day drink much. Boy, times have changed. Wow.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Yeah, who's the coach that's like sneaky that you know
- 21:24Speaker 1: you put him in a royal rumble. Everyone's gonna say
- 21:26Speaker 1: Dan Campbell. Everyone's gonna say Mike Rabel. Everyone's gonna say
- 21:30Speaker 1: Demiko Ryans. Who's a sneaky, strong coach shoes who might
- 21:34Speaker 1: make it out of that thing and be the winner.
- 21:36Speaker 1: I'm trying to think of who that guy might be.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Jesus Christ, Salah.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Sala Salah. That's that's a good one right.
- 21:45Speaker 2: There, Siriani.
- 21:48Speaker 1: I mean he looks I gotta be honest, he looks
- 21:50Speaker 1: a little thicker some cheese steaks, bad Gino's.
- 21:53Speaker 2: I mean, what do you think?
- 21:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know, I don't know. I still think
- 21:57Speaker 3: you'd get tossed out of the ring. Sala, Sala was
- 22:01Speaker 3: a good one.
- 22:02Speaker 5: Mike McDonald looks like he can hold his own.
- 22:04Speaker 3: I was I was thinking Mike McDonald. I was gonna
- 22:07Speaker 3: say him. I don't know his dimensions, but he does
- 22:10Speaker 3: look like he can hold his own. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:14Speaker 2: But he's not there.
- 22:16Speaker 3: I still think it's it's between Campbell, Ryan's and and
- 22:19Speaker 3: Vrabel unless someone knows some real wrestling moves and can
- 22:24Speaker 3: get him out of the ring. Other than that, there
- 22:28Speaker 3: are some coaches that look okay, but they're just kind
- 22:31Speaker 3: of kind of older, like you know, Jim and John Harbaugh.
- 22:34Speaker 3: You know, hardball is always Jim's always limping around.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah he is. I'm trying to think of the
- 22:40Speaker 1: coaches first out. I mean, it's got to be Lafleur
- 22:43Speaker 1: nos all. Yeah, just toss him out of the ring.
- 22:49Speaker 3: How about how about the fight I don't think he's
- 22:51Speaker 3: very big, but the fightiness of Ben Jonson.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, yeah, I could see Ben Johnson. He's got
- 22:58Speaker 2: some crazy underneath he.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Does. He definitely does get him on the pod.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Yeah, he hasn't followed up Mike. Yea, he's got listen,
- 23:10Speaker 1: Ben Johnson. Mike was a walk on at North Carolina.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Taylor was a walk on at North Carolina. Somehow Taylor
- 23:17Speaker 1: got in contact with Ben Johnson. They had a nice exchange,
- 23:21Speaker 1: and Taylor will not follow up to Ben Johnson offered
- 23:23Speaker 1: to come on the show, just not now, which is
- 23:26Speaker 1: a classic move to get out of, you know, being
- 23:28Speaker 1: a guest on a show.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Sure, but you got to follow up with Ben Johnson.
- 23:32Speaker 2: The time is now. I mean he's gonna be too
- 23:34Speaker 2: busy soon.
- 23:34Speaker 3: Right, Yeah.
- 23:36Speaker 4: My problem is my problem is introducing my friends to
- 23:41Speaker 4: my other friends.
- 23:42Speaker 3: Yeah me, Well, listen, that's always that's a fear.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Everyone in this business.
- 23:53Speaker 3: You brought that on yourself, Stude though. The Taylor, the
- 23:55Speaker 3: position you're in, Uh, you have to follow up on those, right, Yeah.
- 24:02Speaker 2: You have to because I'm going to fire you, is
- 24:05Speaker 2: what he says.
- 24:06Speaker 3: It's kind of your job.
- 24:10Speaker 1: So you're not friends with Ben Johnson, You're friendlier with me.
- 24:13Speaker 1: So what you're scared of doing is introducing Ben Johnson,
- 24:16Speaker 1: who's not a friend to your friend and your boss.
- 24:20Speaker 4: You're saying Ben Johnson's not my friend. You don't have
- 24:23Speaker 4: any proof that Ben Johnson isn't my friend.
- 24:26Speaker 2: I do have proof. He's never been on the show.
- 24:30Speaker 5: Peter's mc collins.
- 24:34Speaker 3: Like, listen, I fear every time Andy Reid comes on
- 24:37Speaker 3: with all of us, and he still comes on. Mike,
- 24:40Speaker 3: so you is a friend of mine?
- 24:41Speaker 5: Yeah, Lady Taylor's you know, worries to rest because Andy
- 24:46Speaker 5: Reid still comes.
- 24:47Speaker 2: On with us, right, and you still have a relationship
- 24:49Speaker 2: with Andy Reid? Correct?
- 24:51Speaker 3: I think, Taylor. I think everybody understands what you're getting
- 24:54Speaker 3: with Stu, so I think they're they're willing to put
- 24:57Speaker 3: up with it.
- 24:59Speaker 2: Thank you, Mike.
- 25:01Speaker 4: I think Aaron with Aaron Boone, I'm more worried about mikeye,
- 25:04Speaker 4: if we're being honestly, Wait.
- 25:05Speaker 1: You have an intimate to Aaron Boone? You do have?
- 25:08Speaker 1: You had a conversation with Aaron Boone?
- 25:10Speaker 4: Yep, I would consider friendly with Aaron Boone.
- 25:13Speaker 2: You're friendly with Aaron Boone and.
- 25:14Speaker 4: You haven't got and you haven't tried to get him
- 25:16Speaker 4: on the show because Mike, he's going to fire him
- 25:18Speaker 4: when he comes on.
- 25:19Speaker 5: First off, I don't want to fire Aaron Boone.
- 25:22Speaker 3: I want to fire his boss.
- 25:24Speaker 1: No, no, no, Mike. The amazing part of this is
- 25:26Speaker 1: the guy who wants to fire Aaron Boone is Taylor.
- 25:29Speaker 4: No, no, no, He's a pawn in this game.
- 25:33Speaker 3: Amazed. I am amazed that you are somewhat friendly with
- 25:37Speaker 3: Ben Johnson and Aaron Boone and you've gotten neither one
- 25:40Speaker 3: on the show.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Friend Collins, Now, Mac Collins is a real friend. I mean,
- 25:48Speaker 1: we just had to travel out to the super Bowl
- 25:49Speaker 1: to see him.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, yeah, yeah barefoot.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Because go in the radio row wasn't enough. Taylor had
- 25:56Speaker 1: to drive another hour to get the media.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Yeah, go ah, sitting next.
- 26:09Speaker 5: To my sweaty ass.
- 26:11Speaker 1: He just he's in a weird place right now. He
- 26:14Speaker 1: just he's counting the days he needs Arizona to lose.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Lose, blickly. So Tommy Lloyd could be the next coach
- 26:19Speaker 2: at North Carolina. That's all he cares about.
- 26:21Speaker 3: Man, that would be amazing.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Yeah, would it be? I mean, I don't know, it's
- 26:27Speaker 1: still Carolina, right, I guess.
- 26:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I I know. But you just wonder how much
- 26:31Speaker 3: weight that carries when you have a team, a Final
- 26:34Speaker 3: four team, right now, that you're coaching weird.
- 26:38Speaker 2: I mean Lane Kiffin left before the playoffs.
- 26:40Speaker 3: Yeah, that's true, that's true. We did.
- 26:43Speaker 2: What a weird time we are really is?
- 26:47Speaker 3: You know what it's you think the grass is greener
- 26:49Speaker 3: and sometimes it's not. Ce Brian Kelly.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Yeah, no, unnecessary shot at Brian Kelly there.
- 26:56Speaker 3: Well, I mean, he's just necessary. He's just he's just
- 27:02Speaker 3: the latest coach that I understand the reasons he left,
- 27:06Speaker 3: but it blew up in his face.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Are there any rule changes that you think should be
- 27:13Speaker 1: installed into the NFL for next season?
- 27:17Speaker 3: Oh? What were so? We did discuss what were some
- 27:20Speaker 3: of those? I do think that they should implement the
- 27:26Speaker 3: fourth and fifteen or twenty rule for an on side
- 27:29Speaker 3: kick because the on side kick recovering the on side
- 27:34Speaker 3: kick is about as as rare as missing an old
- 27:39Speaker 3: extra point when it was put at the three yard line.
- 27:42Speaker 3: They moved the extra point back. Now you get misses
- 27:45Speaker 3: of the extra point. It's not a gimmey, where an
- 27:48Speaker 3: on side kick is almost a gimme. So I do
- 27:52Speaker 3: think you should make it a play, make it like
- 27:55Speaker 3: a fourth and fifteen or fourth and twenty. Make it
- 27:59Speaker 3: difficult to do, but make it more that would definitely
- 28:03Speaker 3: get made more than recovering an on side kick. I'm amazed.
- 28:09Speaker 3: And while this will come across as a shot on
- 28:12Speaker 3: kickers that there aren't better on side kicks, I mean well,
- 28:22Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, the kickers have time during practice, obviously
- 28:28Speaker 3: they practice their kicks, but I mean try different stuff,
- 28:32Speaker 3: experiment on the on side kick. And maybe I'm talking
- 28:36Speaker 3: about on my ass, and maybe there isn't any other
- 28:38Speaker 3: right way to really do it, but boy, I try
- 28:41Speaker 3: and come up with something.
- 28:43Speaker 2: I'm with you, it seems like no one's explored it.
- 28:45Speaker 3: I mean, you know, yeah, all the kickers will be
- 28:49Speaker 3: mad at me.
- 28:50Speaker 2: How do you feel about it? Yes, David A.
- 28:54Speaker 5: What and.
- 29:00Speaker 2: What do you make of?
- 29:00Speaker 1: Are we headed towards backup officiating officials here in the NFL?
- 29:04Speaker 3: Boy that I had heard a stat that they're the
- 29:08Speaker 3: lowest paid of the of the four majors, which which
- 29:13Speaker 3: really is somewhat amazing. And you know, the the NFL
- 29:17Speaker 3: brass has told people to start looking for replacements, and
- 29:22Speaker 3: I don't know if they mean that or if they're
- 29:24Speaker 3: using that as a negotiation tool, like, hey, we're going
- 29:27Speaker 3: to do this, you know, unless you guys agree to
- 29:30Speaker 3: something and listen. Overall, I don't remember how the officiating was.
- 29:36Speaker 3: Everything is hung up on that fail Mary, you know,
- 29:39Speaker 3: play everybody looks at that and it's like, oh my god,
- 29:42Speaker 3: these guys stink. But I quite honestly, I don't. This
- 29:44Speaker 3: is what twenty twelve. I don't recall how overall the
- 29:50Speaker 3: officiating was right where where? Now like in baseball, you're
- 29:57Speaker 3: seeing you're seeing home played umpires getting getting abs to death.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Yes, I love it, it's great.
- 30:04Speaker 1: I don't think people realize how hard it is to
- 30:06Speaker 1: officiate that game though.
- 30:08Speaker 2: It's crazy.
- 30:09Speaker 3: I mean, and Warrio Suarez for Cincinnati had two challenges
- 30:14Speaker 3: in a row, and he was so quick with him.
- 30:17Speaker 3: The first one was a third of an inch to
- 30:22Speaker 3: where he was correct a third of an inch. The
- 30:26Speaker 3: second one was one point one inch. I mean, that's amazing.
- 30:31Speaker 3: And I think without a doubt, catchers and pictures or
- 30:34Speaker 3: pitchers are allowed to call it, and they've called it
- 30:36Speaker 3: by far the least, and they should. It should be
- 30:39Speaker 3: the catcher or the hitter. They're right there, they have
- 30:42Speaker 3: the better eyes. But there's also the system is great.
- 30:45Speaker 3: It's like tennis. You should put it on the big
- 30:47Speaker 3: board and people cheer for it. You see it right away.
- 30:51Speaker 3: And how much do people love to cheer for authority
- 30:56Speaker 3: being wrong? I mean they love cheering when when the
- 31:02Speaker 3: when the home plate umpire got the call wrong.
- 31:06Speaker 5: That first pitch missed by a third of an inch
- 31:09Speaker 5: and C. B. Buckner the umpire gets it called wrong,
- 31:11Speaker 5: and you know, on the next pitch, he's like, you
- 31:14Speaker 5: know what you want to you want to call me out? Fine,
- 31:16Speaker 5: and he forgot that he could do it again, and
- 31:18Speaker 5: he goes like gives him a whole inch outside and
- 31:20Speaker 5: then he's like, no, I could do it again.
- 31:23Speaker 2: Yeah, but you're up like a third of an inch.
- 31:25Speaker 3: You're like, well, that's exactly right. Because you know how
- 31:30Speaker 3: ms are different umps. When there was no ABS, they
- 31:33Speaker 3: had their own strike zone. Some called them lower, some
- 31:35Speaker 3: called them higher, some had bigger, some had smaller. They
- 31:39Speaker 3: and batters knew it and catchers knew it, just just
- 31:43Speaker 3: like NFL. You know which officials call holding more past
- 31:47Speaker 3: interference more, you know the cruise. But now A B.
- 31:51Speaker 3: S has kind of taken that away.
- 31:53Speaker 2: I kind of like the mystery.
- 31:55Speaker 1: I mean, I do of when you know what the
- 31:56Speaker 1: strike zone is going to be on a particular night.
- 31:58Speaker 1: I like I like them, I like the iuman element
- 32:01Speaker 1: of it. I don't like this, what are we going
- 32:03Speaker 1: to talk about?
- 32:05Speaker 3: I love when they show it on the screen and
- 32:07Speaker 3: show it on the big screen, just like in tennis.
- 32:10Speaker 3: It's it's the best review system we have in sports now,
- 32:14Speaker 3: in baseball and in tennis.
- 32:16Speaker 4: Yes, And it's got a great countdown to where it's
- 32:19Speaker 4: like three two one, it reveal it's like wow, yeah,
- 32:23Speaker 4: and it's quick.
- 32:24Speaker 3: It's quick, you know. In football there could be is
- 32:26Speaker 3: the ball possessed? Is the foot in bounds? Is a
- 32:29Speaker 3: hand underneath the ball? And in baseball and in tennis,
- 32:33Speaker 3: it's easy. There's a square box in baseball, did the
- 32:37Speaker 3: ball break it? In tennis? Is the ball on the
- 32:39Speaker 3: line or not the line? They can zoom in, they
- 32:42Speaker 3: show it, it's and boom, it's over and you move on.
- 32:45Speaker 5: And the underrated part of it is them showing you
- 32:48Speaker 5: not only that you missed it, but by how much?
- 32:51Speaker 3: How much? Yeah, that you were this wrong? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 32:56Speaker 3: very true.
- 32:57Speaker 2: I gotta be honest, I'm starting to hate sports.
- 33:00Speaker 3: Ah. So it's like, as someone who played it, I
- 33:07Speaker 3: was always one that I wanted the rest to swallow
- 33:10Speaker 3: the whistle in the towards the end of the game. Right.
- 33:14Speaker 3: But the more you think about it, the more it's like,
- 33:16Speaker 3: don't you want consistency? What they what they call early?
- 33:21Speaker 3: Do you want them to call late? You don't want
- 33:23Speaker 3: them to be, you know, a touchy tiki tack file.
- 33:26Speaker 3: I would like. I would like tough calls early as
- 33:32Speaker 3: well as late. I don't want tiki tack calls. I
- 33:34Speaker 3: hate those.
- 33:35Speaker 2: You don't want tiki tak towards the end is what
- 33:37Speaker 2: you're saying.
- 33:37Speaker 3: I don't want tiki tack at all during the game,
- 33:40Speaker 3: quite honestly, unless unless I'm being held and they're not
- 33:43Speaker 3: calling it, which was very rare.
- 33:47Speaker 2: What you being held?
- 33:48Speaker 3: Yeah, there was no reason to hold me.
