Speaker 1: Act. The first scene one a hall Enterpodius and Marcus.
• 0:07
Speaker 1: The dawn is overcast, the morning lours and heavily in
• 0:12
Speaker 1: clouds brings on the day the great, the important day
• 0:17
Speaker 1: beg with fate of Cato and of Rome. Our father's
• 0:22
Speaker 1: death would fill up all the guilt of civil war
• 0:26
Speaker 1: and close the scene of blood. Already Caesar has ravaged
• 0:32
Speaker 1: more than half the globe and seize mankind grown thin
• 0:37
Speaker 1: by his destructive sword. Should he go farther, numbers would
• 0:41
Speaker 1: be wanting to form new battles and support his crimes. Ye, Gods,
• 0:48
Speaker 1: what havoc does ambition make among your works?
• 0:52
Speaker 2: Thy steady temper porches can look on guilt's rebellion, fraud,
• 0:56
Speaker 2: and Caesar in the calm LIFs of mild philosophy, and
• 1:00
Speaker 2: torturedly into madness. Soon I think on the proud victor
• 1:04
Speaker 2: every time he's named for Sialia rise to my view.
• 1:08
Speaker 2: I see the insulting tyrant prancing o'er, the field strewed
• 1:12
Speaker 2: with Rome citizens and drenched in slaughter. His horse's hoofs
• 1:16
Speaker 2: wet with patrician blood. Oh, Porteus, is there not some
• 1:20
Speaker 2: chosen curse, some hidden The thunder and the stalls of heaven,
• 1:25
Speaker 2: red with uncommon wrath to blast than man who owes
• 1:28
Speaker 2: his greatness to his country's ruin.
• 1:31
Speaker 3: Believe me, Marcus tis an impious greatness and mix'd with
• 1:36
Speaker 3: too much horror to be envied? How does the luster
• 1:40
Speaker 3: of our father's actions, through the dark cloud of ills
• 1:44
Speaker 3: that cover him, break out and burn with more triumphant
• 1:48
Speaker 3: brightness his sufferings shine and spread a glory round him?
• 1:54
Speaker 3: Greatly unfortunate, he fights the cause of honor, virtue, liberty,
• 2:00
Speaker 3: and rome. His sword and air fell, but on the
• 2:05
Speaker 3: guilty head oppression, tyranny, and power usurped draw all the
• 2:11
Speaker 3: vengeance of his arm upon them.
• 2:14
Speaker 2: Who knows not this? But what can Kate do against
• 2:18
Speaker 2: a world, a base, degenerate world that courts the yoke
• 2:21
Speaker 2: and bows neckle Caesar pent up in utica, He vainly
• 2:25
Speaker 2: forms the poor epitome of Roman greatness, and covered with
• 2:30
Speaker 2: numidian guards, directs a feeble army and an empty senate
• 2:35
Speaker 2: remnants of mighty battles fought in vain by heaven. Such
• 2:39
Speaker 2: virtue joined us, Such success distracts my very soul. Our
• 2:43
Speaker 2: father's fortune would almost tempt us to renounce his precepts.
• 2:48
Speaker 3: Remember what our father oft has told us. The ways
• 2:51
Speaker 3: of heaven are dark and intricate, puzzled in mazes and
• 2:56
Speaker 3: perplexed with errors. Our understanding traces them in vain, lost
• 3:02
Speaker 3: and bewildered in the fruitless search, nor sees with how
• 3:07
Speaker 3: much art the windings run, nor where the regular confusion ends.
• 3:13
Speaker 2: These are suggestions of a mind at ease, Oh Portius,
• 3:18
Speaker 2: didst thou taste? But have the griefs that wring my soul?
• 3:22
Speaker 2: Thou couldst not talk thus coldly passion, unpitied and successless
• 3:28
Speaker 2: love plant daggers in my heart and aggreate my other griefs.
• 3:34
Speaker 2: Where but my Lucia.
• 3:36
Speaker 1: Kind poor he is aside?
• 3:39
Speaker 3: Thou seest not that thy brother is thy rival, But
• 3:44
Speaker 3: I must hide it, for I know thy temper. Behold
• 3:49
Speaker 3: young Juba, the Numidian prince, with how much care he
• 3:53
Speaker 3: forms himself to glory and breaks the fierceness of his
• 3:57
Speaker 3: native temper to copy out our father's bright example. He
• 4:02
Speaker 3: loves our sister Marcia, greatly loves her. His eyes, his looks,
• 4:08
Speaker 3: his actions all betray it. But still the smothered fondness
• 4:12
Speaker 3: burns within him when most it swells and labors for
• 4:17
Speaker 3: a vent. The sense of honor and desire of fame
• 4:21
Speaker 3: drive the big passion back into his heart. What shall
• 4:26
Speaker 3: an African? Shall Juba's air reproach Great Cato's son and
• 4:31
Speaker 3: show the world of virtue wanting in a Roman's soul potious?
• 4:36
Speaker 2: No more your words leave stings behind them. Whenere did
• 4:41
Speaker 2: jubal did Portius show a virtue that has cast me
• 4:45
Speaker 2: at a distance and thrown me out in the pursuit
• 4:47
  Speaker 2: of honor?
• 4:48
Speaker 3: Marcus? I know thy generous temper well fling, But the
• 4:53
Speaker 3: appearance of dishonor on it its strait takes fire and
• 4:58
Speaker 3: mounts into a blaze.
• 5:00
  Speaker 2: A brother's sufferings claim a brother's pity.
• 5:03
Speaker 3: Heaven knows I pity thee behold my eyes even whilst
• 5:09
Speaker 3: I speak, Do thy not swim in tears? Were but
• 5:14
Speaker 3: my heart has naked to thy view? Marcus would see
• 5:17
Speaker 3: it bleed in his behalf.
• 5:20
Speaker 2: Why then dost treat me with rebukes instead of kind,
• 5:24
Speaker 2: condoling cares and friendly sorrow?
• 5:26
Speaker 3: Oh Marcus? Did I know the way to ease thy
• 5:30
Speaker 3: troubled heart and mitigate thy pains?
• 5:34
Speaker 1: Marcus? Believe me I could die to do it.
• 5:38
Speaker 2: Thou best of brothers, and thou best of friends. Pardon
• 5:43
Speaker 2: a weak, distempered soul that swells with sudden gusts and
• 5:46
Speaker 2: sinks as soon and calms the sport of passions. But
• 5:51
Speaker 2: Sempronius comes, he must not find this softness hanging on me.
• 5:57
Speaker 1: He is it Marcus enter Semproni, Sempronius.
• 6:02
Speaker 4: Aside conspiracies, no sooner should be formed than executed. What
• 6:06
  Speaker 4: means portious?
• 6:07
  Speaker 5: Here?
• 6:08
Speaker 4: I like not that cold youth. I must assemble and
• 6:11
Speaker 4: speak a language foreign to my heart. Good morrow, porters,
• 6:16
Speaker 4: let us once embrace, once more embrace, while yet we
• 6:20
Speaker 4: both are free. Tomorrow, should we thus express our friendship,
• 6:24
Speaker 4: each might receive a slave into his arms. This sun,
• 6:26
Speaker 4: perhaps this morning Sun's the last day shall rise on
• 6:29
  Speaker 4: Roman liberty.
• 6:31
Speaker 3: My father has this morning called together to this poor hall,
• 6:35
Speaker 3: his little Roman Senate, the leavings of Fassalia, to consult
• 6:41
Speaker 3: if he can yet oppose the mighty torrent that bears
• 6:44
Speaker 3: down Rome and all her gods before it, or must
• 6:49
Speaker 3: at length give up the world to seize her.
• 6:52
Speaker 4: Not all the pomp and majesty of Rome can raise
• 6:54
Speaker 4: our Senate more than Cato's presence. His virtues render assembly
• 6:58
Speaker 4: awful they strike with something like religious fear, and may
• 7:01
Speaker 4: even sees that tremble at the head of armies flushed
• 7:04
Speaker 4: with conquest. Oh, my porsches, could I but call that
• 7:08
Speaker 4: wondrous man my father would? But thy sister master, be
• 7:11
Speaker 4: pitious to thy friend's vows, I might be blessed.
• 7:14
Speaker 3: Indeed, alas Sempronius, wouldst thou talk of love to Marcia
• 7:21
Speaker 3: whilst her father's life's in danger. Thou mightest as well
• 7:25
Speaker 3: caught the pale trembling Vestal when she beholds the holy
• 7:30
  Speaker 3: flame expiring.
• 7:32
Speaker 4: The more I see the wonders of thy race, the
• 7:34
Speaker 4: more I'm charmed. Thou must take heed my porches. The
• 7:38
Speaker 4: world has all its eyes on Cato's son. Thy father's
• 7:41
Speaker 4: merit sets THEE up to view and shows THEE in
• 7:43
Speaker 4: the fairest point of light, to make thy virtues or
• 7:46
  Speaker 4: thy faults conspicuous.
• 7:48
Speaker 3: Well, dost thou seem to check my lingering here in
• 7:52
Speaker 3: this important hour? As straight away, and while the fathers
• 7:56
Speaker 3: of the Senate meet in close debate to weigh the
• 7:59
Speaker 3: events of war, I'll animate the soldier's drooping courage with
• 8:05
Speaker 3: love of freedom and contempt of life our thunder in
• 8:10
Speaker 3: their ears their country's cause and try to rouse up
• 8:14
Speaker 3: all that's Roman in them. Tis not immortals to command success.
• 8:19
Speaker 3: But we'll do more, Sempronius, we'll deserve it.
• 8:23
  Speaker 1: Exit gus On.
• 8:25
Speaker 4: That's stripling how he apes his sire and bitterly sententious.
• 8:29
Speaker 4: But I wonder old Sifox comes not his Numidian geniuses
• 8:33
Speaker 4: were disposed to mischief. Will he prompt an negro on it?
• 8:36
Speaker 4: But he must be spurred and every moment quick into
• 8:38
Speaker 4: the course. Kato has used me ill he's refused his
• 8:41
Speaker 4: daughter Marsha to my ardent vows. Besides his baffled arms
• 8:45
Speaker 4: and ruined cause are bars to my ambition. Caesar's favor
• 8:48
Speaker 4: showers down greatness on his friends, will raise me to
• 8:51
Speaker 4: Rome's finest honors. If I give up Cato, I claim
• 8:54
Speaker 4: in my reward, his captive daughter Sifux comes.
• 8:59
  Speaker 1: Enter scifac somempronius.
• 9:01
Speaker 6: All is ready. I've sounded my numidians man by man,
• 9:06
Speaker 6: and find them ripe for a revolt. They all complain
• 9:10
Speaker 6: aloud of Cato's discipline and wait, but the command to
• 9:13
  Speaker 6: change their master.
• 9:15
Speaker 4: Believe me, say facts. There's no time to waste. Even
• 9:18
Speaker 4: while we speak our conqueror comes on and gathers ground
• 9:20
Speaker 4: upon us every moment. Alas, then, nurse not Caesar's active
• 9:24
Speaker 4: soul with what a dreadful cause. He rushes on from
• 9:26
Speaker 4: wa to war in vain, as nature formed mountains and
• 9:29
Speaker 4: oceans to pose his passage. He bounds over all. One
• 9:32
Speaker 4: day more, was said the victor, thundering at our gates.
• 9:36
Speaker 4: But tell me, hast thou yet drawn o'er young Juba
• 9:39
Speaker 4: that still would recommend thee more to Caesar and challenge
• 9:42
  Speaker 4: better terms.
• 9:43
Speaker 6: Alas he's lost, He's lost, some pornius. All his thoughts
• 9:47
Speaker 6: are full of Cato's virtues. But I'll try once more
• 9:51
Speaker 6: for every instant I expect him here. If yet I
• 9:54
Speaker 6: can't subdue those stubborn principles of faith and honor, and
• 9:58
Speaker 6: I know not what that have care his numidian temper
• 10:02
Speaker 6: and struck the infection into all his soul, be.
• 10:05
Speaker 4: Sure to press upon him every motive. Jubi's surrender since
• 10:09
Speaker 4: his father's death, would give up Africa into Caesar's hands,
• 10:12
Speaker 4: make him lord of half the burning zone.
• 10:14
Speaker 6: But is it true, Sampronius, that your senate is called
• 10:17
Speaker 6: together gods? Thou must be cautious. Cato. Has piercing eyes
• 10:22
Speaker 6: and will discern our frauds unless they are covered thick
• 10:25
  Speaker 6: with art.
• 10:26
Speaker 4: Let me alone, good, Si Fax. I'll conceal my thoughts
• 10:29
Speaker 4: In passion tis the surest way. I'll bellow out for Roman,
• 10:32
Speaker 4: for my country, and mouthed Caesar till I shake the Senate.
• 10:35
Speaker 4: He will call hipocracies a stale device, a worn out trick.
• 10:38
Speaker 4: Wouldst thou be thought in earnest cloat, thy fained zealand rage,
• 10:41
Speaker 4: in fire, in fury.
• 10:43
Speaker 6: In trough art, able to instruct gray hairs and teach
• 10:47
Speaker 6: the wide African deceit once more?
• 10:49
Speaker 4: Be sure to try thy skill on Juba. Remember, Si Fax,
• 10:53
Speaker 4: we must work in haste. Oh think what anxious moments
• 10:56
Speaker 4: pass between the birth of plots in their last fatal periods.
• 10:59
Speaker 4: Oh tis a dread, the interval of time filled up
• 11:01
Speaker 4: with horror, all and big with death. Destructure hangs on
• 11:04
Speaker 4: every word we speak and every thought till the concluding
• 11:07
Speaker 4: stroke determines all and closes our design exit.
• 11:12
Speaker 6: I'll try, if yet I can reduce to reason this
• 11:14
Speaker 6: head strong youth and make him spurn at Cato. The
• 11:18
Speaker 6: time is short. Caesar comes rushing on us, But hold
• 11:22
Speaker 6: young Juba sees me and approaches entered.
• 11:25
Speaker 7: Juba siefax I joy to meet thee. Thus alone I've
• 11:31
Speaker 7: observed of late, thy looks are fallen or cast with
• 11:36
Speaker 7: gloomy cares and discontent. Then tell me sidefax I conjure thee.
• 11:42
Speaker 7: Tell me what are the thoughts that knit thy brow
• 11:46
Speaker 7: in frowns and turn thine eye thus coldly on thy prince?
• 11:53
Speaker 6: Does not my talent conceal my thoughts or carry smiles
• 11:56
Speaker 6: and sunshine in my face when discontents, It's heavy at
• 11:59
Speaker 6: my heart. I have not yet so much the Roman
• 12:03
  Speaker 6: in me.
• 12:04
Speaker 7: Why dost thou cast out such ungenerous terms against the
• 12:09
Speaker 7: lords and sovereigns of the world. Dost thou not see
• 12:14
Speaker 7: mankind fall down before them and own the force of
• 12:18
Speaker 7: their superior virtue? Is there a nation in the wilds
• 12:24
Speaker 7: of Africa amidst our, barren rocks and burning sands that
• 12:30
Speaker 7: does not tremble at the Roman name?
• 12:33
Speaker 6: Gods? Where's the work that sets these people up above
• 12:37
Speaker 6: your own? Numidia's tawny sons? Do they with toughest sinews
• 12:42
Speaker 6: bend the bow or flies the javelin swifted to its mark,
• 12:46
Speaker 6: launched from the vigor of a Roman arm who, like
• 12:50
Speaker 6: our active African, instructs the farley steed and trains him
• 12:54
Speaker 6: to his hand, or guides in troops the embattled elephant
• 12:57
Speaker 6: laden with war. These these are the arts, my Prince,
• 13:01
Speaker 6: in which your Ozama does not stoop to Rome.
• 13:05
Speaker 7: These all are virtues of a meaner rank, perfections that
• 13:11
Speaker 7: are placed in bones and nerves. A Roman soul is
• 13:16
Speaker 7: bent on higher views. Turn up the eyes to kit
• 13:22
Speaker 7: there mayest thou see to what a god like height
• 13:27
Speaker 7: The Roman virtues lift up mortal man, well, good and just,
• 13:33
Speaker 7: and anxious for his friends, he still severely bent against himself.
• 13:39
Speaker 7: And when his fortune sets before him, all the pomps
• 13:44
Speaker 7: and pleasures that his soul can wish is rigid virtue
• 13:48
Speaker 7: will accept of none.
• 13:51
Speaker 6: Believe me, Prince, there's not an African that traverses our
• 13:54
Speaker 6: vast numidian deserts in quest of prey and lives upon
• 13:58
Speaker 6: his bow. But better, perhaps those boasted virtues cause eye
• 14:02
Speaker 6: his meals. The fortune of the chase. Amidst the running stream,
• 14:06
Speaker 6: he slicks his first toils all the day, and at
• 14:09
Speaker 6: the approach of night, on the first friendly bank, he
• 14:12
Speaker 6: throws him down, or rests his head upon a rock
• 14:14
Speaker 6: till morn, then rises fresh, pursues his wanted game. And
• 14:19
Speaker 6: if the following day he chanced to find a new
• 14:21
Speaker 6: repast or an untasted spring, bless us his stars and
• 14:26
  Speaker 6: thinks it luxury.
• 14:28
Speaker 7: Their prejudice is Sidefax won't discern what virtues grow from
• 14:34
Speaker 7: ignorance and choice, nor how the hero differs from the brood.
• 14:40
Speaker 7: Where shall we find the man that bears affliction great
• 14:45
Speaker 7: and majestic in his griefs like Cato? How does he
• 14:50
Speaker 7: rise against a load of woes and thank the gods
• 14:54
Speaker 7: that through the weight upon him?
• 14:57
Speaker 6: 'tis pride, rank, pride and haughtiness of salt? I think
• 15:00
Speaker 6: the Romans call it stoicism. Had not your royal father
• 15:05
Speaker 6: thought so highly of Roman virtue and of Cato's cause,
• 15:09
Speaker 6: he had not fallen by a slave's hand inglorious?
• 15:13
Speaker 7: Why dost thou call my sorrows up afresh? My father's
• 15:18
Speaker 7: name brings tears into my eyes.
• 15:22
Speaker 6: Oh, that you profit by your father's ills? What wouldst
• 15:27
Speaker 6: thou have me do abandon Cato?
• 15:32
Speaker 7: Sidefas I should be more than twice an orphan by
• 15:37
  Speaker 7: such a loss.
• 15:39
Speaker 6: Aye, there's the tie that binds you. You long to
• 15:43
Speaker 6: call him father, Marsius charms works in your heart unseed,
• 15:48
Speaker 6: and plead for Cato. No wonder you are deaf to
• 15:51
  Speaker 6: all I say.
• 15:53
Speaker 7: Sithe fags, your zeal becomes importunate. I've furtherto permitted it
• 15:58
Speaker 7: to raive and talkid large, but learned to keep it
• 16:02
Speaker 7: in lest it should take more freedom. Then I'll give.
• 16:06
Speaker 6: It, sir, Your great father never used me thus alas
• 16:12
Speaker 6: he's dead, But can you e'er forget the tender sorrows
• 16:15
Speaker 6: and repeated blessings which you drew from in in your
• 16:18
Speaker 6: last farewell? But good old King, at parting run my hand,
• 16:24
Speaker 6: his eyes bring full of tears. Then, sighing, cried prithee,
• 16:28
Speaker 6: be careful of my son. His grief swelled up so
• 16:32
Speaker 6: high he could not utter more.
• 16:34
Speaker 7: Alas thy story melts away my soul, that best of fathers,
• 16:41
Speaker 7: How shall I discharge the gratitude and duty that I
• 16:46
  Speaker 7: owe him?
• 16:48
Speaker 6: By laying up his counsels in your heart?
• 16:51
Speaker 7: His counsels bade me yield to thy direction. Then sidefax
• 16:58
Speaker 7: chide me in severe terms, vent all thy passion and
• 17:03
Speaker 7: outstand its shock. Calm and unruffled as a summers see
• 17:09
Speaker 7: when not a breath of wind flies or its surface.
• 17:14
Speaker 6: Alas, my prince, i'd guide you to your safety.
• 17:18
Speaker 7: I do believe thou wouldst But tell me how.
• 17:22
Speaker 6: Fly from the fate that follows Caesar's foes.
• 17:25
Speaker 7: My father's scorned to do.
• 17:27
Speaker 6: It, and therefore died.
• 17:30
Speaker 7: Better to die ten thousand thousand deaths than wound my honor.
• 17:38
Speaker 6: Rather say your love.
• 17:41
Speaker 7: Sifax, I've promised to preserve my temper. Why wilt thou
• 17:47
Speaker 7: urge me to confess a flame I long have stifled
• 17:52
Speaker 7: and would vain conceal.
• 17:55
Speaker 6: Believe me, Prince, though hard to conquer, love tis easy
• 17:59
Speaker 6: to divert and break its force. Absence might curate, or
• 18:02
Speaker 6: a second mistress light up another flame and put out this.
• 18:06
Speaker 6: The going games of Zama's royal court have faces flushed
• 18:09
Speaker 6: with more exalted charms. Were you with these, my Prince,
• 18:13
Speaker 6: you'd soon forget. The pale and ripened beauties of the north.
• 18:17
Speaker 7: Tis not a set of features or complexion, the tincture
• 18:22
Speaker 7: of a skin that I admire. Beauty soon grows familiar
• 18:27
Speaker 7: to the lover, fades in his eye and palls upon
• 18:32
Speaker 7: the sense. The virtuous Marcia towers above her sex. True
• 18:38
Speaker 7: she is fair, Oh how divinely fair, But still the
• 18:43
Speaker 7: lovely maid improves her charms withinward greatness, unaffected wisdom, and
• 18:50
Speaker 7: sanctity of manners. Kato's soul shines out in everything she
• 18:55
Speaker 7: acts or speaks, while winning mildness and attractive smeles dwell
• 19:01
Speaker 7: in her looks, and, with becoming grace, soften the rigor
• 19:06
Speaker 7: of her father's virtue.
• 19:08
Speaker 6: How does your tongue grow wanton in her praise? But
• 19:12
Speaker 6: on my knees I beg you would consider.
• 19:15
Speaker 7: Ah Scifax is not she? She moves this way and
• 19:21
Speaker 7: with her Lucia, Lucius's fair daughter. My heart beats thick.
• 19:28
Speaker 7: I prythee Sifax leave me.
• 19:32
Speaker 6: Ten thousand curses fasten on them both. Now will the
• 19:35
Speaker 6: woman with a single glance and do what I've been
• 19:37
  Speaker 6: laboring all this?
• 19:38
Speaker 1: While exit Sifax, enter Marcia and Lucia.
• 19:44
Speaker 7: Hail charming maid. How does thy beauty smooth the face
• 19:49
Speaker 7: of war and make even horror smile? Out sight of thee?
• 19:54
Speaker 7: My heart shakes off its sorrows. I feel a dawn
• 19:58
Speaker 7: of joy upon me, and for a while forget the
• 20:03
  Speaker 7: approach of Caesar.
• 20:05
Speaker 8: I should be grieved, young Prince, to think my presence
• 20:08
Speaker 8: unbent your thoughts and slackened them to arms. While warm
• 20:12
Speaker 8: with slaughter, our victorious foe threatens aloud and calls you
• 20:15
  Speaker 8: to the field.
• 20:17
Speaker 7: Oh Marcia, let me hope thy kind concerns and gentle
• 20:22
Speaker 7: wishes followed me to battle. The thought will give new
• 20:26
Speaker 7: vigor to my arm, and strength and weight to my
• 20:30
Speaker 7: descending sword, and drive it in a tempest on the foe.
• 20:35
Speaker 8: My prayers and wishes always shall attend the friends of Rome,
• 20:39
Speaker 8: the glorious cause of virtue and men approved by the
• 20:42
  Speaker 8: Gods and Cato.
• 20:44
Speaker 7: That Juba may deserve thy pious cares. I'll gaze forever
• 20:49
Speaker 7: on thy godlike father, transplanting one by one into my
• 20:54
Speaker 7: life his bright perfections, till I shine like him.
• 21:00
Speaker 8: My father never at a time like this would lay
• 21:03
Speaker 8: out his great soul in words and waste such precious moments.
• 21:07
Speaker 7: Thy reproofs are just thou virtuous maid. I'll hasten to
• 21:12
Speaker 7: my troops and fire their languid souls with Cato's virtue.
• 21:17
Speaker 7: If ever I lead them to the field, when all
• 21:20
Speaker 7: the war shall stand ranged in its just array and
• 21:24
Speaker 7: dreadful pomp, then will I think on thee O, lovely maid,
• 21:28
Speaker 7: Then will I think on thee, and in the shock
• 21:31
Speaker 7: of charging hosts, remember what glorious deeds should grace the
• 21:36
Speaker 7: man who hopes for Marcia's loved exit.
• 21:40
Speaker 9: Juba, monsieur, you're too severe? How could you'd chy it
• 21:45
Speaker 9: the young, good natured prince and drive him from you
• 21:48
Speaker 9: with so stern an air, a prince that loves and
• 21:52
Speaker 9: doats on you to death.
• 21:54
Speaker 8: Tis therefore, Lucia, that I chiede him from me, his air,
• 21:57
Speaker 8: his voice, his looks, an honest soul, speak all so
• 22:01
Speaker 8: movingly in his behalf. I dare not trust myself to
• 22:03
  Speaker 8: hear him talk.
• 22:05
Speaker 9: Why will you fight against so sweet a passion and
• 22:08
Speaker 9: steal your heart to such a world of charms?
• 22:12
Speaker 8: How Lucia, wouldst thou have me sink away in pleasing
• 22:15
Speaker 8: dreams and lose myself in love? When every moment Cato's
• 22:19
Speaker 8: life sit stake, Caesar comes armed with terror and revenge,
• 22:23
Speaker 8: and aims his thunder at my father's head. Should not
• 22:26
Speaker 8: the sad occasion swallow up my other cares?
• 22:30
Speaker 9: Why have I not this constancy of mind, who have
• 22:34
Speaker 9: so many griefs to try Its force? Sure and nature
• 22:38
Speaker 9: formed me of his softest, mold and feebled all my
• 22:41
Speaker 9: soul with tender passions and sunk me even below my
• 22:44
Speaker 9: own weak sex. Pity and love by turns oppress my heart.
• 22:50
Speaker 8: Lucia, disburden all thy cares on me, and let me
• 22:53
Speaker 8: share thy most retired distress. Tell me who raises up
• 22:57
Speaker 8: this conflict in THEE.
• 23:00
Speaker 9: I need not blush to name them when I tell THEE.
• 23:03
Speaker 9: They're marcius brothers and the sons of Cato.
• 23:06
Speaker 8: They both behold THEE with their sister's eyes, and often
• 23:10
Speaker 8: have revealed their passion to me. But tell me which
• 23:13
Speaker 8: of them is Lucia's choice?
• 23:16
Speaker 9: Suppose for Porsches, could you blame my choice? Oh Porsches,
• 23:21
Speaker 9: thou hast stolen away my soul. Marcus is overwarm. His
• 23:25
Speaker 9: fond complaints have so much earnestness and passion in them.
• 23:29
Speaker 9: I hear him with a secret kind of horror and
• 23:32
Speaker 9: tremble at his vehemence of temper.
• 23:35
Speaker 8: Alas poor youth, How will thy coldness raise tempest and
• 23:39
Speaker 8: storms in his afflicted bosom? I dread the consequence.
• 23:43
Speaker 9: You seem to plead against your brother, Porsches.
• 23:46
Speaker 8: Heaven forbid, had Porschius been the unsuccessful lover the same
• 23:50
Speaker 8: compassion would have fallen on him.
• 23:53
Speaker 9: Or self a virgin love distressed like mine. Porschus himself
• 23:57
Speaker 9: of falls in tears before me, as if he on
• 24:00
Speaker 9: his rival's ill success then bids me hight the motions
• 24:04
Speaker 9: of my heart, nor show which way it turns. So
• 24:07
Speaker 9: much he fears the sad effect that it will have
• 24:10
  Speaker 9: on Marcus.
• 24:12
Speaker 8: Let us, not Lucia, aggravate our sorrows, but to the
• 24:15
Speaker 8: God submit the event of things. Our lives, discolored with
• 24:19
Speaker 8: our present woes, may still grow bright and smile with
• 24:22
Speaker 8: happier hours. So the pure limpid stream, when file with
• 24:26
Speaker 8: stains of rushing torrets and descending rains, works itself clear,
• 24:30
Speaker 8: and as it runs refines till by degrees the floating
• 24:34
Speaker 8: mirror shines reflects each flower that on the border grows,
• 24:38
Speaker 8: and a new heaven in its fair Bosom.
• 24:40
Speaker 1: Shows excellent end of Act one, Act the second scene one,
• 24:49
Speaker 1: the Senate sitting flourish entercado.
• 24:55
Speaker 10: Fathers, we once again are met in council. Caesar's approach
• 25:01
Speaker 10: has summoned us together, and Rome attends her fate from
• 25:06
Speaker 10: our resolves, How shall we treat this bold, aspiring man.
• 25:12
Speaker 10: Success still follows him and backs his crimes Varsalia gave
• 25:18
Speaker 10: him Rome Egypt has since receiv'd his yoke, and the
• 25:23
Speaker 10: whole Nile is Caesar's. Why should I mention Juba's overthrow,
• 25:29
Speaker 10: Incipio's death, Numidia's burning sands till smoke with blood. Tis
• 25:36
Speaker 10: time we should decree what course to take. Our foe
• 25:41
Speaker 10: advances on us and envies us. Even Libya's sulp tree deserts.
• 25:47
Speaker 10: Father's pronounce your thoughts? Are they still fix'd? Hold it
• 25:52
Speaker 10: out and fight it to the last? Where are your
• 25:56
Speaker 10: hearts subdued at length and wrought by time and ill
• 26:01
Speaker 10: success to a submission? Zimpronius speak?
• 26:07
Speaker 4: Gods? Can Rome senate long debate which of the two
• 26:09
Speaker 4: to choose? Slavery your death?
• 26:11
  Speaker 6: No?
• 26:12
Speaker 4: Let us rise at once, gird on our swords, and
• 26:15
Speaker 4: at the head of our amening troops, attack the foe,
• 26:17
Speaker 4: break through the thick array of his thronged legions, and
• 26:19
Speaker 4: charge home upon him. Perhaps some arm more lucky than
• 26:22
Speaker 4: the rest may reach his heart and free the world
• 26:24
Speaker 4: from bondage. Rise Father's rise, Tis, Rome demands your help.
• 26:29
Speaker 4: Rise and revenge our slaughtered citizens, or share their fate
• 26:32
Speaker 4: to battle. Great Pompey's shade complains that we are slow,
• 26:36
Speaker 4: and Scapio's ghost walks unavenged amongst us.
• 26:39
Speaker 10: Let not a torrent of impetuous zeal transport thee thus
• 26:44
Speaker 10: beyond the bounds of reason. True forty two is seen
• 26:49
Speaker 10: in great exploits, that justice warrants, and that wisdom guides All.
• 26:55
Speaker 10: Else is towering frenzy and distraction. Lucius, we next would
• 27:02
Speaker 10: know what's your opinion?
• 27:05
Speaker 11: My thoughts, I must confess, are turned on peace. Already
• 27:11
Speaker 11: have our quarrels filled the world with widows and with orphans.
• 27:17
Speaker 11: Scythia mourns our guilty wars, and Earth's remotest regions lie
• 27:22
Speaker 11: half unpeopled by the feuds of Rome. Tis time to
• 27:27
Speaker 11: sheathe the sword and spare mankind. Already have we shown
• 27:33
Speaker 11: our love to Rome. Now let us show submission to
• 27:37
Speaker 11: the gods. We took up arms not to revenge ourselves,
• 27:42
Speaker 11: but free the commonwealth. When this end fails, arms have
• 27:48
Speaker 11: no further use our country's cause that drew our swords
• 27:53
Speaker 11: now wrests them from our hands, and bids us not
• 27:57
Speaker 11: delight in Roman blood unprofitably shed. What men could do
• 28:05
Speaker 11: is done already. Heaven and Earth will witness if Rome
• 28:10
Speaker 11: must fall, that we are innocent.
• 28:14
Speaker 10: Let us appear nor rash nor diffident. Immoderate valor swells
• 28:20
Speaker 10: into a fault and fear admitted into public councils betrays
• 28:27
Speaker 10: like treason. Let us shun them both, fathers, I cannot
• 28:33
Speaker 10: see that our affairs are grown thus desperate. We have
• 28:37
Speaker 10: bulwarks round us, within our walls, our troops an oord
• 28:41
Speaker 10: to toil in Afric's heat, and seasoned to the sun.
• 28:47
Speaker 10: Numidia's spacious kingdom lies behind us, ready to rise at
• 28:52
Speaker 10: its young prince's call. While there is hope. Do not
• 28:57
Speaker 10: distrust the gods, but wait, at least till Caesar's near
• 29:03
Speaker 10: approach force us to yield tall. Never be too late
• 29:08
Speaker 10: to sue for chains and own a conqueror. Why should
• 29:13
Speaker 10: Rome fall a moment ere her time? No, let us
• 29:18
Speaker 10: draw her term of freedom out in its full length
• 29:22
Speaker 10: and spin it to the last. So shall we gain
• 29:26
Speaker 10: still one day's liberty and let me perish? But in
• 29:31
Speaker 10: Cato's judgment, a day an hour of virtuous liberty is
• 29:37
Speaker 10: worth a whole eternity in bondage.
• 29:42
Speaker 2: Enter Marcus father's this moment, as I watched the gate
• 29:47
Speaker 2: lodged on my post. A herald is arrived from Caesar's camp,
• 29:51
Speaker 2: and within comes Old Decius, the Roman knight. He carries
• 29:55
Speaker 2: and his looks in patience and demands to speak with Cato.
• 29:59
Speaker 10: By your permission and father's bid him.
• 30:02
  Speaker 1: Enter exit.
• 30:04
Speaker 10: Marcus Deseus was once my friend, but other prospects have
• 30:10
Speaker 10: loosed those ties and bound him fast to Caesar. His
• 30:15
Speaker 10: message may determine our resolves.
• 30:20
  Speaker 1: Enter Odysseus.
• 30:21
Speaker 5: Caesar sends health to Kato.
• 30:25
Speaker 10: Could he send it to Kato's slaughtered friends? It would
• 30:29
Speaker 10: be welcome. Are not your orders to address the Senate?
• 30:34
Speaker 5: My business is with Kato. Caesar sees the straits to
• 30:40
Speaker 5: which you're driven, and as he knows Cato's high worth,
• 30:45
Speaker 5: is anxious for your life.
• 30:48
Speaker 10: My life is grafted on the fate of Rome. Would
• 30:52
Speaker 10: he save Cato? Bid him spare his country? Tell your
• 30:57
Speaker 10: dictator this, and tell him Cato disdains a life which
• 31:02
Speaker 10: she has power to offer.
• 31:05
Speaker 5: Rome and her senators submit to Caesar. Her generals and
• 31:11
Speaker 5: her counsels are no more who checked his conquests and
• 31:17
Speaker 5: denied his priumphs. Why will not kto be this Caesar's friend?
• 31:25
Speaker 10: These very reasons thou hast urged forbid it.
• 31:30
Speaker 5: Kato, I've orders to expostulate and reason with you as
• 31:36
Speaker 5: from friend to friend. Think on the storm that gathers
• 31:41
Speaker 5: o'er your head and threatens every hour to burst upon it. Still,
• 31:48
Speaker 5: may you stand high in your country's honors. Do but
• 31:52
Speaker 5: comply and make your peace with Caesar. Rome will rejoice
• 31:58
Speaker 5: and cast its eyes on Cato as the second of mankind.
• 32:05
Speaker 10: No more, I must not think of life on such conditions.
• 32:11
Speaker 5: Caesar is well acquainted with your virtues, and therefore sets
• 32:16
Speaker 5: this value on your life. Let him but null the
• 32:20
Speaker 5: price of Cato's friendship and name your terms.
• 32:26
Speaker 10: Bid him disband his legions, restore the commonwealth to liberty,
• 32:32
Speaker 10: submit his actions to the public, censure, and stand the
• 32:37
Speaker 10: judgment of a Roman senate. Bid him do this, and
• 32:42
Speaker 10: Cato is his friend.
• 32:45
Speaker 5: Kato. The world talks loudly of your wisdom.
• 32:50
Speaker 10: Nay more, though Cato's voice was ne'er employed to clear
• 32:55
Speaker 10: the guilty into varnish crimes, my so will mount the
• 33:01
Speaker 10: rostrum in his favor and strive to gain his pardon
• 33:06
  Speaker 10: from the people.
• 33:08
Speaker 5: A style like this becomes a conqueror deseus.
• 33:13
Speaker 10: A style like this becomes a Roman.
• 33:17
Speaker 5: What is a Roman that is Caesar's foe?
• 33:21
Speaker 10: Greater than Caesar? He's a friend to virtue.
• 33:25
Speaker 5: Consider, Cato, you're in Utica and at the head of
• 33:30
Speaker 5: your own little senate. You do not thunder in the
• 33:34
Speaker 5: capitol with all the mouths of Rome to second you?
• 33:39
Speaker 10: Let him consider that who drives us hither tis Caesar's
• 33:44
Speaker 10: sword has made Rome's senate little and thinned its ranks.
• 33:49
Speaker 10: Alas thy dazzled eye beholds this man in a false,
• 33:54
Speaker 10: glaring light, which conquests and success have thrown upon him,
• 34:00
Speaker 10: didst thou but view him right? Thou'st see him black
• 34:04
Speaker 10: with murder, treason, sacrilegion, crimes that strike my soul with horror.
• 34:11
Speaker 10: But to name them, I know thou lookest on me
• 34:15
Speaker 10: as honor wretch, be set with ills and covered with misfortunes.
• 34:21
Speaker 10: But by the Gods, I swear millions of worlds should
• 34:25
Speaker 10: never buy me to be like that Caesar.
• 34:30
Speaker 5: Does Kato send this answer back to Caesar? For all
• 34:35
Speaker 5: his generous cares and proffered friendship.
• 34:39
Speaker 10: His cares for me are insolent and vain, presumptuous man,
• 34:44
Speaker 10: The gods take care of Kato. Would Caesar show the
• 34:48
Speaker 10: greatness of his soul. Bid him employ his care for
• 34:52
Speaker 10: these my friends, and make good use of his ill
• 34:57
Speaker 10: gotten power by sheltering men much better than himself.
• 35:03
Speaker 5: Your high, unconquered heart makes you forget you are a man.
• 35:09
Speaker 5: You rush on your destruction. But I have done. Will
• 35:15
Speaker 5: I relate hereafter the tale of this unhappy embassy, all
• 35:21
Speaker 5: Rome will be in tears.
• 35:24
  Speaker 1: Exitdysseus Kato.
• 35:27
Speaker 4: We thank thee, the mighty genius of immortal Rome speaks
• 35:30
Speaker 4: in thy voice, thy soul with liberty. He's all shrinked
• 35:34
Speaker 4: to hear the words thou utterest and shudder the midst
• 35:37
Speaker 4: of all his conquests.
• 35:39
Speaker 11: The Senate owes its gratitude to Cato, who, with so
• 35:44
Speaker 11: great a soul, consults its safety and guards our lives
• 35:49
Speaker 11: while he neglects his own.
• 35:53
Speaker 4: Sopranis gives no thanks on this account. Lucia seems fond
• 35:56
Speaker 4: of life, But what is life? Does not talk about
• 35:59
Speaker 4: and draw for share from time to time or gaze
• 36:01
Speaker 4: upon the sun? Tis to be free. When liberty is gone,
• 36:05
  Speaker 4: life grows insipid.
• 36:07
Speaker 10: Come no more, saimpronius. I'll hear our friends to Rome
• 36:13
Speaker 10: and to each other. Let us not weaken still the
• 36:16
Speaker 10: weaker side by our divisions.
• 36:20
Speaker 4: Kato, my resentments are sacrifice to Rome. I stand reproved.
• 36:26
Speaker 10: Fathers. Tis time you come to a resolve.
• 36:31
Speaker 11: Kato, we all go in your opinion. Caesar's behavior has
• 36:38
Speaker 11: convinced the Senate. We ought to hold it out till
• 36:42
  Speaker 11: terms arrive.
• 36:44
Speaker 4: We ought to hold it out till death. But Kato,
• 36:47
Speaker 4: my private voice is drowned and miss the Senate.
• 36:50
Speaker 10: Then let us rise, my friends, and strive to fill
• 36:55
Speaker 10: this little interval, this pause of life. Well. Yet our
• 36:59
Speaker 10: liberty and fates are doubtful. With resolution, friendship, Roman, bravery,
• 37:06
Speaker 10: and all the virtues we can crowd into it, that
• 37:09
Speaker 10: heaven may say it ought to be prolonged. Fathers, farewell.
• 37:15
Speaker 10: The young Numidian prince comes forward and expects to know
• 37:20
  Speaker 10: our councils.
• 37:23
Speaker 1: Excellent senators entered Juba, Juba.
• 37:28
Speaker 10: The Roman Senate has resolved till time give better prospects
• 37:34
Speaker 10: still to keep the sword unsheathed and turn its edge
• 37:38
  Speaker 10: on Caesar.
• 37:41
Speaker 7: The resolution fits a Roman senate, But Cato none me
• 37:46
Speaker 7: for a while thy patience, and condescend to hear a
• 37:51
Speaker 7: young man speak my father, when some days before his
• 37:55
Speaker 7: death he ordered me to march for Utica. Lass I
• 38:00
Speaker 7: thought not. Then his death so near wept o'er me
• 38:05
Speaker 7: pressed me in his aged arms, And as his griefs
• 38:09
Speaker 7: gave way, my son said, he, whatever fortune shall befall
• 38:14
Speaker 7: thy father, be Kto's friend. He'll train THEE up to
• 38:19
Speaker 7: great and virtuous deeds. Do but observe him well. Thou'lt
• 38:24
Speaker 7: shun misfortunes, or thout learn to bear them.
• 38:29
Speaker 10: Juba, thy father was a worthy prince and merited alas
• 38:34
Speaker 10: a better fate, But Heaven thought otherwise.
• 38:39
Speaker 7: My father's fate, in spite of all the fortitude that
• 38:43
Speaker 7: shines before my face in Kato's great example, subdues my
• 38:49
Speaker 7: soul and fills my eyes with tears.
• 38:53
Speaker 10: It is an honest sorrow and becomes thee.
• 38:57
Speaker 7: My father drew respect from foreign climes. The kings of
• 39:03
Speaker 7: afric sought him for their friend, kings far remote that
• 39:07
Speaker 7: rule as fame reports behind the hidden sources of the Nile.
• 39:12
Speaker 7: In distant worlds on t'other side the sun oft have
• 39:16
Speaker 7: their black ambassadors appeared, loaden with gifts, and filled the
• 39:21
  Speaker 7: courts of Zama.
• 39:23
Speaker 10: I am no stranger to thy father's greatness.
• 39:27
Speaker 7: I would not boast the greatness of my father, but
• 39:31
Speaker 7: point out new alliances to Cato. Had we not better
• 39:35
Speaker 7: leave this Utica to arm Numidia in our cause and
• 39:40
Speaker 7: court the assistance of my father's powerful friends, Did they
• 39:45
Speaker 7: know Cato, our remotest kings, would pour embattled multitudes about him.
• 39:51
Speaker 7: Their swarthy hosts would dorken all our plains, doubling the
• 39:56
Speaker 7: native horror of the war and making death more grim.
• 40:00
Speaker 10: And canst thou think Cato will fly before the sword
• 40:04
Speaker 10: of Caesar Reduc'd like Hannibal, to seek relief from court
• 40:10
Speaker 10: to court and wander up and down a vagabond in afric.
• 40:15
Speaker 7: Kato perhaps unto officious, But my forward cares would fain
• 40:20
Speaker 7: preserve a life of so much value. My heart is
• 40:24
Speaker 7: wounded when I see such virtue afflicted by the weight
• 40:27
  Speaker 7: of such misfortunes.
• 40:30
Speaker 10: Thy nobleness of soul obliges me. But know, young Prince,
• 40:36
Speaker 10: that valor soars above what the world calls misfortune and affliction.
• 40:42
Speaker 10: These are not ills, else would they never fall on
• 40:47
Speaker 10: Heaven's first favorites and the best of men. The gods
• 40:53
Speaker 10: in bounty work up storms about us that give mankind
• 40:57
Speaker 10: occasion to exert hidden strength and throw out into practice
• 41:03
Speaker 10: virtues which shun the day and lie concealed in the
• 41:08
Speaker 10: smooth seasons and the calms of life.
• 41:13
Speaker 7: I'm charmed whene'er thou talkest. I pant for virtue, and
• 41:17
Speaker 7: all my soul endeavors that perfection.
• 41:21
Speaker 10: Dost thou love, watchings, abstinence, and toil laborious virtues. All
• 41:28
Speaker 10: learn them from Cato. Success and fortune? Must thou learn
• 41:34
  Speaker 10: from Caesar?
• 41:36
Speaker 7: The best good fortune that can fall on Juba. The
• 41:39
Speaker 7: whole success at which my heart aspires depends on Cato.
• 41:45
Speaker 10: What does Juba say? Thy words confound me?
• 41:50
Speaker 7: I would fain retract them, Give them me back again.
• 41:54
Speaker 7: They aimed at nothing.
• 41:56
Speaker 10: Tell me thy wish, young Prince. Make not my ear
• 42:00
Speaker 10: a stranger to thy thoughts.
• 42:03
Speaker 7: Oh they're extravagant. Still let me hide them.
• 42:07
Speaker 10: What can Juba ask that Kato will refuse?
• 42:12
Speaker 7: I fear to name it. Marcia inherits all her father's virtues.
• 42:18
  Speaker 10: What wouldst thou.
• 42:19
Speaker 7: Say, Kato, thou hast a daughter?
• 42:24
Speaker 10: Adieu, Young Prince? I would not hear a word should
• 42:28
Speaker 10: lessen thee in my esteem? Remember the hand of fate
• 42:32
Speaker 10: is over us in heaven. Exact severity from all our thoughts.
• 42:38
Speaker 10: It is not now a time to talk of aught
• 42:42
Speaker 10: but chains or conquest, liberty or.
• 42:46
Speaker 1: Death, exit and your scifax.
• 42:51
Speaker 6: How's this, my prince? What covered with confusion? You look
• 42:55
Speaker 6: as if Yon's stern philosopher had just thou chied you.
• 43:00
Speaker 7: Sy thags. I'm undone.
• 43:03
Speaker 6: I know it well.
• 43:05
Speaker 7: Kato thinks meanly of me.
• 43:08
Speaker 6: And so will all mankind.
• 43:10
Speaker 7: I've opened to him the weakness of my soul, my
• 43:13
  Speaker 7: love for Marcia.
• 43:16
Speaker 6: Kato's a proper person to entrust a lovetail with.
• 43:19
Speaker 7: Oh, I could pierce my heart, my foolish heart.
• 43:24
Speaker 6: Alas, my prince, how are you changed of late? I've
• 43:28
Speaker 6: known young Juba rise before the sun to beat the
• 43:31
Speaker 6: thicket where the tiger slept, or seek the lion in
• 43:34
Speaker 6: his dreadful haunts. I've seen you, even in the Libyan
• 43:38
Speaker 6: dog days, hunt him down, then charge him closer, and,
• 43:41
Speaker 6: stooping from your horse, rivet the panting savage to the ground.
• 43:45
  Speaker 7: Prithee no more?
• 43:47
Speaker 6: How would the old king smile to see where the
• 43:51
Speaker 6: paws when tipped with gold and throw the shaggy spoils
• 43:55
  Speaker 6: about your shoulders?
• 43:57
Speaker 7: Sive Fag's this old man's talk, though he flowed in
• 44:00
Speaker 7: every word would now lose all its sweetness. Kato's displeased,
• 44:05
Speaker 7: and Marcia lost forever.
• 44:08
Speaker 6: Young Prince, I yet could give you good advice. Marcia
• 44:13
Speaker 6: might still be yours.
• 44:15
Speaker 7: As how dear Sifax.
• 44:18
Speaker 6: Juba commands Numidia's hardy troops, mounted on steeds, unused to
• 44:22
Speaker 6: the restraint of curbs or bets, and fleeter than the
• 44:26
Speaker 6: winds give but the word we snatch this damsel up
• 44:29
  Speaker 6: and bearer off.
• 44:31
Speaker 7: Can such dishonest thoughts rise up in man which they'll
• 44:35
Speaker 7: seduce my youth to do an act that would destroy
• 44:38
  Speaker 7: my honor?
• 44:40
Speaker 6: God, I could tear my hair to hear you talk, honors,
• 44:44
Speaker 6: a fine imaginary notion that draws in raw and inexperienced
• 44:48
Speaker 6: men to real mischiefs, while they hunt a shadow.
• 44:51
Speaker 7: Which thou degrade thy Prince into a ruffian.
• 44:55
Speaker 6: The boasted ancestors of these great men whose virtues you
• 44:59
Speaker 6: at my all such ruffians. The dread of nations, this
• 45:03
Speaker 6: almighty rome, the comprehension, her wide empires, bounds all under
• 45:08
Speaker 6: heaven was founded on a rape. Your Skippios, Caesar's Pompeys,
• 45:14
Speaker 6: and your Cato's, But gods on earth are all the
• 45:18
Speaker 6: spurious blood of violated maids, of ravished sabines.
• 45:22
Speaker 7: Sifax, I fear that are ahead of thine abounds too
• 45:26
Speaker 7: much in our numidian wiles.
• 45:29
Speaker 6: Indeed, my Prince, you ought to know the world.
• 45:33
Speaker 7: If knowledge of the world makes men perfidious, May Juba
• 45:37
Speaker 7: ever live in ignorance? Go go, You're young gods? Must
• 45:43
Speaker 7: I tamely bear this arrogance unanswered? Thou art a trader,
• 45:48
Speaker 7: a false old trader.
• 45:52
Speaker 1: Scifax aside, I've gone too far.
• 45:56
Speaker 7: Kato shall know the baseness of thy.
• 45:58
Speaker 1: Soul, sithefax Aside, I.
• 46:02
Speaker 6: Must appease this storm or perish in it. Young prince,
• 46:06
Speaker 6: behold these locks that are grown white beneath a helmet
• 46:09
Speaker 6: in your father's battles.
• 46:11
Speaker 7: Those locks shall ne'er protect thy insolence.
• 46:15
Speaker 6: Must one rash word the infirmity of age, throw down
• 46:18
Speaker 6: the merit of my better years. This the reward of
• 46:22
Speaker 6: a whole life of service.
• 46:24
Speaker 1: Aside, curse on the boy.
• 46:26
Speaker 6: How steadily he hears.
• 46:27
Speaker 7: Me scie facts, no more, I would not hear you talk.
• 46:32
Speaker 6: Not hear me talk. What when my faith to Juba,
• 46:36
Speaker 6: my royal Master's son, is called in question, my Prince
• 46:40
Speaker 6: may strike me dead, and I'll be dumb, But whilst
• 46:43
Speaker 6: I live, I must not hold my tongue and languish
• 46:45
Speaker 6: out old age in his displeasure.
• 46:48
Speaker 7: Thou knowest the way too well, and too my heart,
• 46:51
Speaker 7: I do believe THEE loyal to thy prince?
• 46:55
Speaker 6: What great instance can I give? I have offered to
• 46:58
Speaker 6: do an action which my soul abhause and gain you,
• 47:01
Speaker 6: whom you love, at any price?
• 47:03
Speaker 7: Was this thy motives? I've been too hasty.
• 47:07
Speaker 6: And tis for this my Prince has called me traitor.
• 47:10
Speaker 7: Sure, thou mistakest I did not call THEE so you did.
• 47:14
Speaker 6: Indeed, my Prince, you called me traitor. Nay further threaten
• 47:18
Speaker 6: you'd complain to Kato of what my prince? Would you
• 47:22
Speaker 6: complain to Cato that Saphax loves you and would sacrifice
• 47:25
Speaker 6: his life, nay more his honor in your service?
• 47:30
Speaker 7: Cyfax, I know thou lovest me, But indeed thy zeal
• 47:34
Speaker 7: for Juba carried THEE too far. Honors as sacred tie
• 47:38
Speaker 7: the love of kings. The noble man's distinguishing perfection that
• 47:42
Speaker 7: aids and strengthens virtue where it meets her, and imitates
• 47:46
Speaker 7: her actions where she is not. It ought not to
• 47:49
  Speaker 7: be sported.
• 47:50
Speaker 6: With believe me, Prince, you make old Sapax weep to
• 47:53
Speaker 6: hear you talk. But tis with tears of joy. If
• 47:57
Speaker 6: ere your father's crown adorn your brows, video will be
• 48:00
Speaker 6: blessed by Cato's lectures.
• 48:03
Speaker 7: Sifax, thy hand, we'll mutually forget the warmth of youth
• 48:08
Speaker 7: and forwardness of age. Thy prince esteems thy worth and
• 48:11
Speaker 7: loves thy person. If the scepter come into my hand,
• 48:15
Speaker 7: Sifax shall stand the second in my kingdom.
• 48:19
Speaker 6: Why will you overwhelm my age with kindness? My joys
• 48:23
  Speaker 6: grow burdensome.
• 48:24
Speaker 7: I shan't support it, Sifax, farewell. I'll hands and try
• 48:29
Speaker 7: to find some blast occasion that may set me right.
• 48:32
Speaker 7: In Cato's thoughts, I'd rather have that man approve my
• 48:36
  Speaker 7: deeds than worlds.
• 48:37
Speaker 1: For my admirers exit.
• 48:41
Speaker 6: Young men soon give and soon forget affronts. Old age
• 48:45
Speaker 6: is slow in both a false old traitor. These words
• 48:50
Speaker 6: rash boy, may chance to cost the dear. My heart
• 48:53
Speaker 6: had still some foolish fondness for the but hence tis gone.
• 48:57
Speaker 6: I give it to the winds. Caesar, I am wholly.
• 49:00
Speaker 1: Thine andrews and proneus all.
• 49:04
Speaker 6: Hails some pronius Well cato so let Us resolved to
• 49:08
Speaker 6: wait the fury of a siege before it.
• 49:10
Speaker 4: Yields si Fax. We both were on the verge of fate.
• 49:14
Speaker 4: Lucia's declared for peace, and terms were offered to Cato
• 49:16
Speaker 4: by a messenger from Caesar. Should they submit ere, our
• 49:19
Speaker 4: designs are ripe. We both must perish in the common wreck,
• 49:22
Speaker 4: lost in the general undistinguished ruin.
• 49:25
Speaker 6: But how stands Cato?
• 49:27
Speaker 4: Thou hast seen Mount Atlas, whilst storms and tempest thunder
• 49:31
Speaker 4: on its brows, and oceans break their billows at its feet.
• 49:33
Speaker 4: It stands unmoved, and glories in its height, such as
• 49:36
Speaker 4: that haughty man, his towering soul miss all the shocks,
• 49:40
Speaker 4: the news of fortune ridses superior and looks down on Caesar.
• 49:44
Speaker 6: But what's this messenger?
• 49:46
Speaker 4: I've practiced with him and found the means to let
• 49:48
Speaker 4: the victor know that sifax Is Semporis are as friends.
• 49:51
Speaker 4: But let me now examine in my turn's duba fixed.
• 49:55
Speaker 6: Yes, but it is Cato. I've tried the force of
• 49:58
Speaker 6: every reason on him. Soon carest, being angry, soothed again,
• 50:02
Speaker 6: laid safety, life and interest in his sight. But all
• 50:05
Speaker 6: are vain. He scorns them all for Cato.
• 50:09
Speaker 4: Come tis no matter we shall do without him. He'll
• 50:11
Speaker 4: make a pretty figure in a triumph and serve the
• 50:14
Speaker 4: trip before the victor's tariot. Sy Fax, I now may
• 50:17
Speaker 4: hope thou hast forsook thy Juba's cause and wishest marchha mine.
• 50:22
Speaker 6: May she be thine as fast as thou wouldst have.
• 50:24
Speaker 4: Her, Si Fax, I love that woman, tho I curse
• 50:27
Speaker 4: her and myself, Yet spite of me I love her.
• 50:32
Speaker 6: Make Cato sure and give up Utica. Caesar will never
• 50:35
Speaker 6: refuse THEE such a trifle. But are thy troops prepared
• 50:39
Speaker 6: for a revolt? Does a susedition catch from man to
• 50:42
Speaker 6: man and run among the ranks?
• 50:44
Speaker 4: All all is ready? The factious leaders are our friends
• 50:47
Speaker 4: that spread murmurs and discontents among the soldiers. They count
• 50:50
Speaker 4: their toilsome marches, long fatigues, unusual fastings, and will hear
• 50:54
Speaker 4: no more this medley philosophy and war. Within an hour
• 50:57
Speaker 4: they'll storm the Senate House.
• 50:59
Speaker 6: Meanwhile, I'll drop my Numidian troops within the square to
• 51:03
Speaker 6: exercise their arms. And as I see occasion favor THEE,
• 51:07
Speaker 6: I laugh to see how your unshaken Cato will look
• 51:10
Speaker 6: aghast while unforeseen destruction paws in upon him. Thus from
• 51:14
Speaker 6: every side, so where our wide nominian wastes extend sudden though,
• 51:19
Speaker 6: the imperious hurricanes descend wheel through the air, encircling Eddy's play,
• 51:25
Speaker 6: tear up the sand and sweep whole plains away. The
• 51:28
Speaker 6: hapless traveler, with wild surprise, sees the dry desert all
• 51:32
Speaker 6: around him rise, and smothered in the dusty whirlwind.
• 51:37
Speaker 1: Dies excellent and of Act two, act the third scene
• 51:45
Speaker 1: one a chamber enter Marcus and Portius.
• 51:50
Speaker 2: Thanks to my stars, I have not arranged about the
• 51:53
Speaker 2: wilds of life. Ere I could find a friend. Nature
• 51:56
Speaker 2: first pointed out my porges to me, and early taught
• 52:00
Speaker 2: me by her secret force to love thy person. Ere
• 52:03
Speaker 2: I knew thy merit till what was instinct grew up
• 52:06
  Speaker 2: into friendship.
• 52:08
Speaker 3: Marcus. The friendships of the world are oft confederacies in
• 52:13
Speaker 3: vice or leagues of pleasure. Ours has severest virtue for
• 52:18
Speaker 3: its basis, And such a friendship ends not but with life, Portius.
• 52:24
Speaker 2: Thou know'st my soul in all its weakness, then prithee
• 52:28
Speaker 2: spare me on its tender side, indulge me. But in
• 52:32
Speaker 2: love my other passions shall rise and fall by virtue's
• 52:35
  Speaker 2: nicest rules.
• 52:37
Speaker 3: When love's well timed, tis not a fault to love.
• 52:41
Speaker 3: The strong, the brave, the virtuous, and the wise sink
• 52:46
Speaker 3: in the soft captivity together.
• 52:49
Speaker 2: Alas they're talks like one that never felt them. Patient
• 52:53
Speaker 2: throbs and loggings of a soul that pants and reaches
• 52:57
Speaker 2: after distant good lover does not live by vulgar time.
• 53:02
Speaker 2: Believe me, Portius. In my Lucia's absence, life hangs upon
• 53:06
Speaker 2: me and becomes a burden. And yet when I behold
• 53:12
Speaker 2: the charming maid, I am ten times more undone. While
• 53:17
Speaker 2: hope and fear, and grief and rage and love rise
• 53:20
Speaker 2: up at once, and with variety of pain distract me.
• 53:25
Speaker 3: What can thy portios do to give thee help?
• 53:28
Speaker 2: Porteous, thou often joyest the fair One's presence, Then undertake
• 53:34
Speaker 2: my cause and plead it to her with all the
• 53:37
Speaker 2: strength and heat of eloquence, for eternal love and friendship
• 53:40
Speaker 2: can inspire. Tell her thy brother languaghes to death and
• 53:46
Speaker 2: fades away, and wills in his bloom, that he forgets
• 53:50
Speaker 2: his sleep and loathes food, that youth and health and
• 53:54
Speaker 2: war are joyless to him. Describe his anxious days and restlessness,
• 54:00
Speaker 2: and all the torments that thou seest me suffer.
• 54:04
Speaker 3: Marcus, I beg THEE give me not an office that
• 54:07
Speaker 3: suits me. So ill thou knowest my temper, Wilt.
• 54:12
Speaker 2: Thou behold me sinking in my woes? And wilt thou
• 54:14
Speaker 2: not reach out a friendly arm to raise me from
• 54:16
Speaker 2: amidst this blund of sorrows?
• 54:19
Speaker 3: Marcus, thou canst not ask what I'd refuse? But here
• 54:23
Speaker 3: believe me, I have a thousand reasons.
• 54:26
Speaker 2: I know thou'lt say my passions out of season, that
• 54:29
Speaker 2: Kato's great example in misfortune should both conspire to drive
• 54:33
Speaker 2: it from my thoughts? But what's all this to one
• 54:36
Speaker 2: that loves like me? Oh, porteous, porteous from my soul?
• 54:42
Speaker 2: I wish thou didst but know thyself? What tis to
• 54:44
Speaker 2: love that wouldst thou pity and assist.
• 54:48
Speaker 1: Thy brother portious asighed?
• 54:51
Speaker 3: What should I do if I disclose my passion? Our
• 54:55
Speaker 3: friendship's at an end? If I conceal it, the world
• 55:00
Speaker 3: call me false to a friend and brother.
• 55:04
Speaker 2: But see where Lucia, at her wonted hour amid the
• 55:07
Speaker 2: cool of yonheigh marble arch enjoys noon debrize a observer, Portius,
• 55:14
Speaker 2: that face, that shape, there's eyes, that heaven of beauty.
• 55:21
Speaker 2: Observe her well and blame me if thou canst.
• 55:24
Speaker 3: She sees us and advances.
• 55:27
Speaker 2: I'll withdraw and leave you for a while. Remember, Portius,
• 55:32
Speaker 2: thy brother's life depends upon thy.
• 55:35
Speaker 1: Tongue exit, ander, Lucia, did not I.
• 55:40
Speaker 9: See your brother Marcus here? Why did he fly the
• 55:43
Speaker 9: place and shun my presence?
• 55:45
Speaker 3: Oh, Lucia, language is too faint to show his rage
• 55:50
Speaker 3: of love? It preys upon his life. He pines, he sickens,
• 55:57
Speaker 3: he despairs, he dies.
• 56:01
Speaker 9: How wilt thou guard thy honor in the shock of
• 56:04
Speaker 9: love and friendship? Think, Betimes, my pausches, Think how the
• 56:08
Speaker 9: nuptial tide that might ensure our mutual bliss would raise
• 56:12
Speaker 9: to such a height thy brother's griefs as might perhaps
• 56:16
  Speaker 9: destroy him.
• 56:17
Speaker 3: Alas poor youth. What dost thou think, My Lucia, his generous, open,
• 56:24
Speaker 3: undesigning heart has begged his rival to solicit for him.
• 56:29
Speaker 3: Then do not strike him dead with the denial?
• 56:32
Speaker 9: No, Porusches, No, I see thy sister's tears, thy father's anguish,
• 56:37
Speaker 9: and thy brother's death in the pursuit of our ill
• 56:40
Speaker 9: fated loves, and Porsches, here I swear to Heaven. I
• 56:45
Speaker 9: swear to Heaven and all the powers that judge mankind,
• 56:50
Speaker 9: never to mix my plighted hands with thine, while such
• 56:54
Speaker 9: a cloud of mischief hangs upon us, But to forget
• 56:57
Speaker 9: our loves and drive THEE out from all my thoughts.
• 57:01
Speaker 9: As far as I am able.
• 57:03
Speaker 3: What hast thou said, I'm thunderstruck. Recall those hasty words,
• 57:09
Speaker 3: or I am lost forever.
• 57:12
Speaker 9: Has not the vow already passed my lips. The gods
• 57:15
Speaker 9: have heard it and decealed in heaven. May all the
• 57:19
Speaker 9: vengeance that was ever poured on perjured heads overwhelm me
• 57:23
Speaker 9: if I break it.
• 57:25
Speaker 3: Fixed in astonishment, I gaze upon THEE, like one just
• 57:29
Speaker 3: blasted by a stroke from heaven, who pants for breath
• 57:33
Speaker 3: and stiffens, yet alive in dreadful looks, a monument of wrath.
• 57:39
Speaker 9: Think, Porsches, Think thou seest thy dying brothers stab at
• 57:43
Speaker 9: his heart, and all besmeared with blood. Storming at heaven,
• 57:47
Speaker 9: and THEE, thy awful sire sternly demands the cause, the
• 57:51
Speaker 9: accursed cause that robs him of his son, poor Marcia trembles,
• 57:57
Speaker 9: then tears her hair, and frantic in her griefs out
• 58:00
Speaker 9: on Lucia. What could Lucia answer, or how stand up
• 58:05
Speaker 9: in such a scene of sorrow?
• 58:07
Speaker 3: To my confusion and eternal grief, I must approve the
• 58:11
Speaker 3: sentence that destroys me.
• 58:14
Speaker 9: Pushes no more thy worlds shoot through my heart, melt
• 58:19
Speaker 9: my resolves, and turn me all to love. Why are
• 58:22
Speaker 9: those tears of fondness in thy eyes? Why heaves thy heart?
• 58:27
Speaker 9: Why swells thy soul with sorrow? It softens me too much? Farewell,
• 58:34
Speaker 9: my porsches, farewell though death is in the word.
• 58:38
Speaker 3: Forever, Stay, Lucia, Stay what dost thou say? Forever thou
• 58:46
Speaker 3: must not go? My soul still hovers are they and
• 58:51
  Speaker 3: can't get loose?
• 58:53
Speaker 9: If the firm porsches shake to hear of parting, Think
• 58:57
  Speaker 9: what Lucia.
• 58:58
Speaker 3: Suffers tis true, unruffled and serene. I have met the
• 59:04
Speaker 3: common accidents of life. But here such an unlooked for
• 59:09
Speaker 3: storm of ills falls on me. It beats down all
• 59:13
Speaker 3: my strength. I cannot bear it. We must not part.
• 59:18
Speaker 9: What dost thou say? Not part? Hast thou forgot the
• 59:22
  Speaker 9: vow that.
• 59:22
  Speaker 6: I have made?
• 59:23
Speaker 9: Are not their heavens and gods that thunder over us.
• 59:27
Speaker 9: But see thy brother Marcus bends this way. I sicken
• 59:31
Speaker 9: at the sight once more. Farewell, farewell, and no thou
• 59:36
Speaker 9: wrongst me? If thou think'st ever was love? Or ever
• 59:39
  Speaker 9: grief like mine?
• 59:42
Speaker 1: Exit, Lucia, enter Marcus Porteus.
• 59:46
Speaker 2: What hopes hastand she am I doomed to life or death?
• 59:53
Speaker 3: What wouldst thou have me say?
• 59:56
Speaker 2: What means this pensive posture? Thou appearst It's like one
• 1:00:00
  Speaker 2: amazed and terrified.
• 1:00:03
  Speaker 3: I have a reason.
• 1:00:05
Speaker 2: Thy downcast looks and thy disordered thoughts tell me my fate.
• 1:00:11
Speaker 2: I ask not the success my cause is found.
• 1:00:14
  Speaker 3: I'm grieved, I undertook it.
• 1:00:17
Speaker 2: What does the barbarous maid insult my heart? My aching
• 1:00:22
Speaker 2: heart and triumph and my pains that I could custer
• 1:00:26
Speaker 2: from my thoughts forever?
• 1:00:29
Speaker 3: Oh, why you're too suspicious in your griefs Lucia, those
• 1:00:33
Speaker 3: sworn never to think of love? Compassionates your pains and pities?
• 1:00:38
Speaker 2: You compassionate's my pains and pities me? What is compassion
• 1:00:44
Speaker 2: when tis void of love? Fool that I was to
• 1:00:47
Speaker 2: choose so cold a friend to urder my cause compassionate's
• 1:00:52
Speaker 2: my pains, prithee, what art what retic didst Thou used
• 1:00:57
Speaker 2: to gain this mighty boon? She pities me to one
• 1:01:03
Speaker 2: that asks the warm returns of love. Compassion's cruelty tis scorn,
• 1:01:10
  Speaker 2: tis death?
• 1:01:11
Speaker 3: Marcus, no more have I deserved this treatment?
• 1:01:15
Speaker 2: What have I said her? Paulteus?
• 1:01:18
  Speaker 6: Oh, forgive me?
• 1:01:20
Speaker 2: The soul exasperated in himals falls out of everything. It's
• 1:01:26
Speaker 2: friend itself shout hah? What means that? Shout big? With
• 1:01:32
Speaker 2: the sounds of war? What did you alarm?
• 1:01:35
Speaker 3: A second louder yet swells in the wind and comes
• 1:01:39
Speaker 3: more full upon us.
• 1:01:41
Speaker 2: Oh, for some glorious cause to fall in battle, Lucia,
• 1:01:47
Speaker 2: thou hast undone me that I disdain has breake my heart?
• 1:01:53
Speaker 2: Tis death? Must give me ease?
• 1:01:56
Speaker 3: Quick? Let us hans who knows of Cato's life? If
• 1:02:00
Speaker 3: stand sure? Oh Marcus, I am warmed. My heart leaps
• 1:02:04
Speaker 3: at the trumpet's voice and burns for glory.
• 1:02:08
Speaker 1: Excellent scene two, part of the Senate House. And here
• 1:02:15
Speaker 1: Sempronius with leaders of the mutiny at length.
• 1:02:18
Speaker 4: The winds are raised, the storms blow high. Bid your care,
• 1:02:22
Speaker 4: my friends, to keep it up in all its fury
• 1:02:24
Speaker 4: and direct it right to to spent itself on Cato's head. Meanwhile,
• 1:02:28
Speaker 4: I'll heard among his friends, and seeing one of their number,
• 1:02:31
Speaker 4: that what they arrive, my friends and fellow soldiers may
• 1:02:34
  Speaker 4: be safe.
• 1:02:35
Speaker 12: Exit we are all safe. Sempronius is our friend. Sempronius
• 1:02:41
Speaker 12: is as brave a man as Cato. But hark he enters,
• 1:02:45
Speaker 12: bear up boldly to him, be sure you beat him
• 1:02:48
Speaker 12: down and bind him fast. This day will end our toils.
• 1:02:52
Speaker 12: Fear nothing, for Sempronius is our.
• 1:02:55
Speaker 1: Friend, Andresimpronius with Cato, Lucius, Portius, and Marcus.
• 1:03:02
Speaker 10: Where are those bold, intrepid sons of war that greatly
• 1:03:07
Speaker 10: turn their backs upon the foe and to their general
• 1:03:11
Speaker 10: send a brave defiance.
• 1:03:15
Speaker 1: Sempronius, aside cousin a.
• 1:03:18
Speaker 4: Dusted soul, they stunt.
• 1:03:19
Speaker 10: Astonish'd perfidious men. And will you thus dishonor your past
• 1:03:25
Speaker 10: exploits and sully all your wars? Why could not Cato
• 1:03:31
Speaker 10: fall without your guilt? Behold ungrateful men, behold my bosom,
• 1:03:37
Speaker 10: naked to your swords, and let the man that's injur'd
• 1:03:42
Speaker 10: strike the blow, which of you all suspects that he
• 1:03:46
Speaker 10: is wronged or thinks he suffers greater ills than cato am,
• 1:03:51
Speaker 10: I distinguish'd from you, but by toils, superior toils and
• 1:03:57
Speaker 10: heavier weight of cares painful pre eminence sempronius.
• 1:04:04
Speaker 1: Aside confusion to the villains, all is lost.
• 1:04:09
Speaker 10: Have you forgotten Libya's burning waste, its barren rocks, parched
• 1:04:15
Speaker 10: earth and hills of sand, its tainted air, and all
• 1:04:20
Speaker 10: its broods of poison? Who was the first to explore
• 1:04:25
Speaker 10: the untrodden path when life was hazarded in every step,
• 1:04:31
Speaker 10: or fainting in the long laborious march, when on the
• 1:04:36
Speaker 10: banks of an unlooked for stream you sunk the river
• 1:04:40
Speaker 10: with repeated drafts? Who was the last of all your
• 1:04:45
  Speaker 10: host who thirsted?
• 1:04:47
Speaker 4: Did not his temples glow in the same sultry winds
• 1:04:50
  Speaker 4: and scorching heats?
• 1:04:52
Speaker 10: Hence worthless men? Hence and complain to Caesar. You could
• 1:04:58
Speaker 10: not undergo the toil of war, nor bear the hardships
• 1:05:03
Speaker 10: that your leader bore.
• 1:05:06
Speaker 11: See Kato, See the unhappy men. They weep, fear and
• 1:05:15
Speaker 11: remorse and sorrow for their crime. Appear in every look
• 1:05:22
Speaker 11: and plead for mercy.
• 1:05:25
Speaker 10: Learn to be honest men, Give up yond leaders, and
• 1:05:29
Speaker 10: pardon shall descend on all the rest.
• 1:05:33
Speaker 4: Kato, commit these wretches to my care, first of the
• 1:05:36
Speaker 4: need to be broken on the wreck. Then with what
• 1:05:38
Speaker 4: life remains, impaled and left to ride at leisure around
• 1:05:41
Speaker 4: the bloody steak. They let them hang and take the
• 1:05:44
Speaker 4: southern wind. The partners of their crime will learn.
• 1:05:47
Speaker 10: Obedience forbear Simpronius. See they suffer death. But in their
• 1:05:54
Speaker 10: deaths remember they are men. Strain not the laws to
• 1:05:59
Speaker 10: make their tortures grievous. Lucius, the base degenerate age requires
• 1:06:06
Speaker 10: severity when by just vengeance guilty mortals perish the gods,
• 1:06:12
Speaker 10: behold the punishment with pleasure, and lay the uplifted thunderbolt aside.
• 1:06:20
Speaker 4: Cato, I execute thy will with pleasure.
• 1:06:24
Speaker 10: Meanwhile, will sacrifice to liberty. Remember, o, my friends, the laws,
• 1:06:31
Speaker 10: the rights, the generous plan of power, delivered down from
• 1:06:35
Speaker 10: age to age by your renowned forefathers, so dearly bought
• 1:06:42
Speaker 10: the price of so much blood. Oh, let it never
• 1:06:47
Speaker 10: perish in your hands, but piously transmit it to your children.
• 1:06:53
Speaker 10: Do thou, great liberty, inspire our souls and make our
• 1:06:59
Speaker 10: lives in thy possession happy? Were our deaths glorious in
• 1:07:05
  Speaker 10: thy just.
• 1:07:06
Speaker 12: Defense, Excillant Cato et cetera, Simpronius, you have acted like yourself.
• 1:07:15
Speaker 12: One would have thought you had been half in.
• 1:07:17
Speaker 4: Earnest villains, stand off base, groveling, worthless wretches, mongrels, infection,
• 1:07:22
Speaker 4: poor faint heart detraitors.
• 1:07:25
Speaker 12: Nay, now you carry it too far, Simpronius.
• 1:07:28
Speaker 4: No villains when such paltry slaves presume to mix in treason.
• 1:07:32
Speaker 4: If the plot succeeds, they're thrown neglected by But if
• 1:07:35
Speaker 4: it fails, they'll show to die like dogs. As you
• 1:07:38
Speaker 4: shall do here. Take these factitious monsters, drag them forth
• 1:07:41
  Speaker 4: a sudden death.
• 1:07:43
Speaker 12: Nay, since it comes to this.
• 1:07:45
Speaker 4: Despatch them quick. First, pluck out their tongues. That's what
• 1:07:48
Speaker 4: the dying breath they sow sedition.
• 1:07:51
Speaker 1: Excillant guards with their leaders enter sci Fax our first design.
• 1:07:57
Speaker 6: My friend has pooved a bat. Still there remains, and
• 1:08:00
Speaker 6: after game to play, my troops sumounted that. But Sempronius
• 1:08:03
Speaker 6: head us in our flight. We'll force the gate where
• 1:08:06
Speaker 6: Marcus keeps his guard, and you down all that would
• 1:08:08
Speaker 6: oppose our passage. A day will bring us into Caesar's camp.
• 1:08:13
  Speaker 9: Confusion.
• 1:08:13
Speaker 4: I've failed of half my purpose. Marcia, the charming marsh
• 1:08:17
  Speaker 4: is left behind.
• 1:08:18
Speaker 6: How will so Pronius turn a woman's slave.
• 1:08:22
Speaker 4: Think not, thy friend can never feel the soft and
• 1:08:25
Speaker 4: manly warmth and tenderness of love, Say Effex, I longed
• 1:08:29
Speaker 4: to clasp that haughty maid and bend her stubborn virtue
• 1:08:32
Speaker 4: to my passion. When I've gone thus far, I'd cast.
• 1:08:35
Speaker 6: Her off, well said, that's spoken like thyself, Simpronius. What
• 1:08:39
Speaker 6: hinders them? But that thou find her out and hurry
• 1:08:42
Speaker 6: her away by manly force?
• 1:08:45
Speaker 4: But how to gain admission? Fraxes is given to none
• 1:08:48
Speaker 4: but Duba and her brothers.
• 1:08:50
Speaker 6: Thou shalt have Duba's dress and Duba's guards. The doors
• 1:08:53
Speaker 6: will open when Numidia's prince seems to appear before the
• 1:08:56
Speaker 6: slaves that watch them.
• 1:08:58
Speaker 4: Heavens, what a thought which is my own? How o
• 1:09:01
Speaker 4: my bosoms swell with anxious joy, while I behold us
• 1:09:04
Speaker 4: struggling in my arms, with glowing beauty and disordered charms
• 1:09:07
Speaker 4: for fear and anger, with alternate grace pant in her
• 1:09:10
Speaker 4: breast and vary in her face. So Pluto seized off.
• 1:09:13
Speaker 4: Proposene conveyed Hell's tremendous gloom. The affrightened maid their grimly smiles,
• 1:09:18
Speaker 4: pleased with the beaters's prize, no envy Jove, his sunshine
• 1:09:22
  Speaker 4: and his skies.
• 1:09:23
Speaker 1: Excellant. End of Act three, Act the fourth scene one
• 1:09:30
Speaker 1: a chamber, and to Luccia and Marcia.
• 1:09:35
Speaker 9: Now tell me, Marcia, tell me from thy soul. If
• 1:09:38
Speaker 9: thou believest this possible for woman to suffer greater ills
• 1:09:42
  Speaker 9: than Lucilla suffers.
• 1:09:44
Speaker 8: Oh Lucia, Lucia, might my big swollen heart vent all
• 1:09:48
Speaker 8: its griefs and give loose to sorrow. Marcia could answer
• 1:09:51
Speaker 8: THEE in sighs, keep pace with all thy woes and
• 1:09:54
Speaker 8: count out tyr for tear.
• 1:09:57
Speaker 9: I know thou art doomed alike to be beloved by
• 1:09:59
Speaker 9: Ju and thy father's friends and Pronius. But which of
• 1:10:04
Speaker 9: these has power to charm like porsches?
• 1:10:07
Speaker 8: Still? I must beg THEE not to name Sempronius. Lucia.
• 1:10:11
Speaker 8: I like not that loud, boisterous man Juba to all
• 1:10:15
Speaker 8: the bravier of a hero adds softest love and more
• 1:10:18
Speaker 8: than female sweetness. Juba might make the proudest of our sex,
• 1:10:22
Speaker 8: any of womankind, but Marcia happy?
• 1:10:25
Speaker 9: And why not? Marcia? Come, you strive in vain to
• 1:10:29
Speaker 9: hide your thoughts from one who knows too well the
• 1:10:31
Speaker 9: inward glowings of a heart in love.
• 1:10:34
Speaker 8: While Cato lives. His daughter has no right to love
• 1:10:38
Speaker 8: or hate, but as his choice directs.
• 1:10:41
Speaker 9: But should this father give you to Sempronius?
• 1:10:44
Speaker 8: I dare not think he will. But if he should,
• 1:10:47
Speaker 8: why wilt thou add to all the griefs I suffer,
• 1:10:50
Speaker 8: imaginary ills and fancied tortures. I hear the sound of
• 1:10:55
Speaker 8: feet they march this way. Let us retire and try
• 1:10:59
Speaker 8: if we can drown each softer thought and sense of
• 1:11:01
Speaker 8: present danger. When love once pleads admission to our hearts,
• 1:11:05
Speaker 8: in spite of all the virtues, we can boast. The
• 1:11:07
  Speaker 8: woman that deliberates.
• 1:11:09
Speaker 1: Is lost accident. Enter some Pronius dressed like Juba with
• 1:11:15
  Speaker 1: Numidian guards.
• 1:11:16
Speaker 4: The dear is lodged. I've tracked her to a covert
• 1:11:20
Speaker 4: How will the young Numidian rave to see his mistress lost?
• 1:11:23
Speaker 4: If ord could glad my soul beyond the enjoyment of
• 1:11:25
Speaker 4: so bright a prize, twould beat the torture that young
• 1:11:28
  Speaker 4: gay barbarian.
• 1:11:29
  Speaker 10: But hark what.
• 1:11:30
Speaker 4: Noise death to my hopes? Tis he tis dubisself. There's
• 1:11:35
Speaker 4: but one way left?
• 1:11:36
  Speaker 1: Enter Juba.
• 1:11:38
Speaker 7: What do I see? Who is this that dares usurp
• 1:11:42
Speaker 7: the guards and habits of Numidia's prince, one that.
• 1:11:47
Speaker 4: Was born to Scorge by arrogant, presumptuous youth.
• 1:11:51
Speaker 7: What can this mean?
• 1:11:53
Speaker 4: Simpronius, my sore shall answer THEE have at thy heart.
• 1:11:57
Speaker 7: Nay, then beware thy own proud, barbarous man.
• 1:12:03
Speaker 1: Sempronius falls, curse my stars?
• 1:12:07
Speaker 4: Am I doomed the fall by a boy's hands figured
• 1:12:10
Speaker 4: in a violimidian dress, and for a worthless woman. God,
• 1:12:14
Speaker 4: So I'm distracted. This is the close of life of
• 1:12:17
Speaker 4: for a pile of thunder. Don't make up, see in air,
• 1:12:20
Speaker 4: in heaven, and Cato tremble dies.
• 1:12:24
Speaker 7: Oh hands to Kato, that we may there at length
• 1:12:28
Speaker 7: unravel all this dark design, this mystery of fate.
• 1:12:34
Speaker 1: Exit Juba and to Lucia and Marcia Shore.
• 1:12:38
Speaker 9: It was the clash of sorts. Oh, my troubled heart
• 1:12:41
Speaker 9: is so cast done and sunk amidst its sorrows. It
• 1:12:45
Speaker 9: thwops with fear and aches at every sound. Oh, Marcia,
• 1:12:50
Speaker 9: should I bothers for my sake? I die away with
• 1:12:54
Speaker 9: horror at the thoughts.
• 1:12:55
Speaker 8: See Lucia, see here's blood, Here's blood and murder. Ha
• 1:13:01
Speaker 8: a numidian heaven preserved the prince. The faith lies muffled
• 1:13:06
Speaker 8: within the garment, but ah death to my sight a
• 1:13:10
Speaker 8: diadem and royal robes. Oh gods, tis he tis he
• 1:13:14
Speaker 8: Juba lies dead before us.
• 1:13:17
Speaker 9: No, Marcia, now call up to thy assistance, thy wonted
• 1:13:21
Speaker 9: strength and constancy of mind. Thou canst not put it
• 1:13:24
Speaker 9: to a greater trial.
• 1:13:26
Speaker 8: Lucia, look there and wonder at my patience? Have I
• 1:13:29
Speaker 8: not caused a rave and beat my breast, to rend
• 1:13:32
Speaker 8: my heart with grief and run distracted?
• 1:13:36
Speaker 9: What can I think or say to give thee comfort?
• 1:13:39
Speaker 8: Talk not of comfort, tis for lighter ills. Behold the
• 1:13:43
Speaker 8: sight that strikes all comfort.
• 1:13:45
Speaker 1: Dead entered Juba listening, I will.
• 1:13:49
Speaker 8: Indulge my sorrows and give way to all the pangs
• 1:13:52
Speaker 8: and fury of despair. That man, the best of men,
• 1:13:57
Speaker 8: deserved it from me?
• 1:13:59
Speaker 7: What do I hear? And was the false and pronius
• 1:14:04
Speaker 7: that best of men? Oh? Had I fallen like him
• 1:14:09
Speaker 7: and could have been thus mourned? I had been happy?
• 1:14:14
Speaker 8: Tis not in fate to ease my tortured breast. Oh,
• 1:14:18
Speaker 8: he was all made up of love and charms. Whatever
• 1:14:21
Speaker 8: maid could wish or man admire, delight of every eye
• 1:14:25
Speaker 8: when he appeared, a secret pleasure gladdened all that saw him.
• 1:14:29
Speaker 8: But when he talked, the proudest Roman blush to hear
• 1:14:33
Speaker 8: his virtues, and old age grew wise. Oh, Juba, Juba?
• 1:14:39
Speaker 7: What means that voice? Did she not call?
• 1:14:43
  Speaker 3: On?
• 1:14:43
  Speaker 7: Juba?
• 1:14:45
Speaker 8: Why do I think on what he was? He's dead.
• 1:14:48
Speaker 8: He's dead and never knew how much I loved him. Lucia,
• 1:14:53
Speaker 8: who knows? But his poor bleeding heart, amidst its agonies,
• 1:14:57
Speaker 8: remembered Marcia, And the last word he uttered called me
• 1:15:01
Speaker 8: cruel alas he knew, not hapless youth. He knew not
• 1:15:05
Speaker 8: Marcia's whole soul was full of love and Juba.
• 1:15:09
Speaker 7: Where am I do I live? Or am? Indeed? What
• 1:15:15
Speaker 7: Marcia thinks all is elysium round me.
• 1:15:21
Speaker 8: Ye dear remains of the most loved of men, nor
• 1:15:25
Speaker 8: modesty nor virtue. Here forbid a last embrace.
• 1:15:29
Speaker 1: While thus see throwing himself before her.
• 1:15:34
Speaker 7: Marcia see the happy Juba lives. He lives to catch
• 1:15:40
Speaker 7: that dear embrace and to return it to with mutual
• 1:15:45
Speaker 7: warmth and eagerness of love.
• 1:15:49
Speaker 8: With pleasure and amaze. I stand transported. If thou art Juba,
• 1:15:55
  Speaker 8: who lies there.
• 1:15:57
Speaker 7: A wretch discuss eyes like Juba on a cursed design,
• 1:16:04
Speaker 7: I could not bear to leave THEE in the neighborhood
• 1:16:07
Speaker 7: of death, but flew in all the haste of love
• 1:16:12
Speaker 7: to find THEE. I found THEE, weeping and confess this
• 1:16:17
Speaker 7: once and wrapped with joy to see Marcia's tears.
• 1:16:23
Speaker 8: I've been surprised at an unguarded hour, but must not
• 1:16:26
Speaker 8: go back. The love that lay half smothered in my
• 1:16:29
Speaker 8: breast has broke through all its weak restraints and burns
• 1:16:32
Speaker 8: in its full luster. I cannot if I would conceal
• 1:16:36
  Speaker 8: it from THEE.
• 1:16:37
Speaker 7: My joy, my best beloved, my only wish. How shall
• 1:16:43
Speaker 7: I speak the transport of my soul?
• 1:16:47
Speaker 8: Lucia, thy arm lead to my apartment, Oh Prince, I
• 1:16:51
Speaker 8: blush to think what I have said, But fate has
• 1:16:54
Speaker 8: rested the confession from me. Go on and prosper in
• 1:16:57
Speaker 8: the paths of honor. Thy virtual excuse is my passion
• 1:17:00
Speaker 8: for THEE. And make the gods propitious.
• 1:17:03
Speaker 1: To our love excident. Marcia and Lucia, I am so blessed.
• 1:17:09
Speaker 7: I fear tis all a dream fortune. Thou now hast
• 1:17:14
Speaker 7: made amends for all thy past unkindness. I absolved my stars,
• 1:17:22
Speaker 7: what though Numidia at her conquered towns and provinces, to
• 1:17:28
Speaker 7: swell the victor's triumph. Juba will never add his fate repine.
• 1:17:35
Speaker 7: Let Caesar have the world if Marcia is mine.
• 1:17:40
Speaker 1: Exit Scene two, the street a march at a distance,
• 1:17:47
  Speaker 1: Entercato and Lucius.
• 1:17:50
Speaker 11: I stand astonished. Won't the bold Sempronius that still broke
• 1:17:57
Speaker 11: foremost through the crowd of patriots, as with a hurricane
• 1:18:01
Speaker 11: of zeal, transported and virtuous even to madness.
• 1:18:06
Speaker 10: Trust me, Lucius, our civil discords have produced such crimes,
• 1:18:12
Speaker 10: such monstrous crimes. I am surprised at nothing, Oh Lucius,
• 1:18:18
Speaker 10: I am sick of this bad world. The daylight and
• 1:18:22
Speaker 10: the sun grow painful to me, and Reportius, But see
• 1:18:28
Speaker 10: where Portius comes? What means this haste? Why are thy
• 1:18:33
  Speaker 10: looks thus changed?
• 1:18:36
Speaker 3: My heart is grieved. I bring such news as will
• 1:18:39
  Speaker 3: afflict my father.
• 1:18:41
Speaker 10: Has Caesar shed more Roman blood?
• 1:18:45
Speaker 3: Not so the traitor Sifax. As within the square he
• 1:18:49
Speaker 3: exercised his troops the signal given, flew off at once
• 1:18:53
Speaker 3: with his Numidian horse to the south gate, where Marcus
• 1:18:58
Speaker 3: holds the watch and call to stop him. But in
• 1:19:02
Speaker 3: vain he tossed his arm aloft and proudly told me
• 1:19:07
Speaker 3: he would not stay and perish like Sempronius.
• 1:19:11
Speaker 10: Perfidious man. But haste my son, and see thy brother
• 1:19:17
  Speaker 10: Marcus acts a Roman's part.
• 1:19:20
  Speaker 1: Exit Portius, Lucius.
• 1:19:23
Speaker 10: The torrent bears too hard upon me. Justice gives way
• 1:19:27
Speaker 10: to force the conquered world as Caesar's Cato has no
• 1:19:33
  Speaker 10: business in it.
• 1:19:35
Speaker 11: While pride, oppression and in justice reign. The world will
• 1:19:40
Speaker 11: still demand her Cato's presence in pity to mankind, submit
• 1:19:47
Speaker 11: to Caesar and reconcile thy mighty soul to life.
• 1:19:52
Speaker 10: Would Lucius have me live to swell the number of
• 1:19:55
Speaker 10: Caesar's slaves, or by a base submission, give up the
• 1:20:00
Speaker 10: cause of Rome and own a tyrant.
• 1:20:04
Speaker 11: Though Victor never will impose on kto ungenerous terms, his
• 1:20:10
Speaker 11: enemies confess the virtues of humanity are Caesar's.
• 1:20:15
Speaker 10: Curse on his virtues. They have undone his country. Such
• 1:20:21
Speaker 10: popular humanity is treason. But see young Juba. The good
• 1:20:27
Speaker 10: youth appears full of the guilt of his perfidious subjects.
• 1:20:32
Speaker 11: Alas for Prince, his fate deserves compassion.
• 1:20:39
Speaker 7: Entered Juba, I blush and am confounded to appear before
• 1:20:45
  Speaker 7: thy presence.
• 1:20:47
Speaker 10: Kto what'st thy crime.
• 1:20:51
  Speaker 7: I'm a numidian and a brave one.
• 1:20:54
Speaker 10: Too, thou hast a Roman.
• 1:20:57
Speaker 7: Soul has heard of my false countrymen.
• 1:21:04
Speaker 10: Alas young prince, Falsehood and fraud shoot up in every soil.
• 1:21:10
Speaker 10: The product of all climes, Rome has its caesars.
• 1:21:16
Speaker 7: Tis generous. Thus to comfort the distress.
• 1:21:21
Speaker 10: Tis just to give applause where'tis deserved. Thy virtue prince
• 1:21:28
Speaker 10: has stood the test of fortune, like purest gold, that
• 1:21:34
Speaker 10: tortured in the furnace comes out more bright and brings
• 1:21:39
Speaker 10: forth all its weight.
• 1:21:43
Speaker 7: What shall I answer thee. I'd rather gain thy praise
• 1:21:47
Speaker 7: o ca To than Numidia's empire, and.
• 1:21:52
Speaker 3: Reportius misfortune on misfortune, grief on grief.
• 1:21:58
Speaker 10: My brother, ma ah, what has he done? Has he
• 1:22:03
Speaker 10: forsook his post? Has he given way? Did he look
• 1:22:07
Speaker 10: tamely on and let them pass?
• 1:22:10
Speaker 3: Scarce? Had I left my father? But I met him
• 1:22:14
Speaker 3: born on the shields of his surviving soldiers, breathless and pale,
• 1:22:18
Speaker 3: and covered o'er with wounds. Long at the head of
• 1:22:22
Speaker 3: his few faithful friends, he stood the shock of a
• 1:22:26
Speaker 3: whole host of foes, till obstinately brave and bent on death.
• 1:22:33
Speaker 3: Oppressed with multitudes, he greatly fell. I'm satisfied, Nor did
• 1:22:41
Speaker 3: he fall before his sword had pierced through the false
• 1:22:45
Speaker 3: heart of Sciphax. Yonder he lies. I saw the hoary
• 1:22:51
Speaker 3: traitor grin in the pangs of death and bite the ground.
• 1:22:57
Speaker 10: Thanks to the gods, my boy has done his duty portious.
• 1:23:03
Speaker 10: When I am dead, be sure you place his urn
• 1:23:07
  Speaker 10: near mine.
• 1:23:09
Speaker 11: Long may they keep asunder, Oh Kato, arm thy soul
• 1:23:15
Speaker 11: with all its patients. See where the corpse of thy
• 1:23:19
Speaker 11: dead son approaches. The citizens and senators, alarmed, have gathered
• 1:23:26
Speaker 11: round it and attended weeping.
• 1:23:30
Speaker 1: Kato meeting the corpse. Senators attending welcome my son here.
• 1:23:39
Speaker 10: Lay him down, my friends, full in my sight, that
• 1:23:44
Speaker 10: I may view at leisure the bloody course and count
• 1:23:49
Speaker 10: those glorious wounds. How beautiful is death when earned by virtue?
• 1:23:56
Speaker 10: Who would not be that youth? What is it that
• 1:24:01
Speaker 10: we can die but once to serve our country? Why
• 1:24:06
Speaker 10: sits the sadness on your brows? My friends? I should
• 1:24:10
Speaker 10: have blush'd Cato's house had stood secure and flourished in
• 1:24:17
Speaker 10: a civil war. Horshus. Behold thy brother, and remember thy
• 1:24:24
Speaker 10: life is not thy own. When Rome demands.
• 1:24:28
Speaker 7: It was ever man like this, alas, my.
• 1:24:34
Speaker 10: Friends, why mourn you? Thus? Let not a private loss
• 1:24:39
Speaker 10: afflict your hearts. Tis, Rome requires our tears, the mistress
• 1:24:45
Speaker 10: of the world, the seat of empire, the nurse of heroes,
• 1:24:51
Speaker 10: the delight of God's that humbled the proud tyrants of
• 1:24:56
Speaker 10: the earth and set the nations free. Rome is no more,
• 1:25:02
Speaker 10: Oh liberty, oh virtue, Oh my country.
• 1:25:08
Speaker 1: Juba aside, behold that upright man.
• 1:25:13
Speaker 7: Rome fills his eyes with tears that flow'd not o'er
• 1:25:19
  Speaker 7: his own dear.
• 1:25:21
Speaker 10: Son, whate'er the Roman virtue has subdu'd the Sun's whole course.
• 1:25:29
Speaker 10: The Jay and year are Caesar's for him. The self
• 1:25:34
Speaker 10: devoted decie I died, the fabe I fell, and the
• 1:25:39
Speaker 10: great Scipios conquer'd. Even Pompey fought for Caesar. O, my friends,
• 1:25:46
Speaker 10: how is the toil of fate the work of ages?
• 1:25:51
Speaker 10: The Roman Empire fallen, Oh cursed ambition, fallen into Caesar's hands.
• 1:26:00
Speaker 10: Our great forefathers had left him not to conquer but
• 1:26:04
  Speaker 10: his country.
• 1:26:06
Speaker 7: While kto lives. Caesar will blush to see mankind and slaved,
• 1:26:14
Speaker 7: and be ashamed of empire.
• 1:26:17
Speaker 10: Caesar ashamed has he not seen for Salia.
• 1:26:22
Speaker 11: Tis time thou save thyself and us lose.
• 1:26:27
Speaker 10: Not a thought on me. I'm out of danger. Heaven
• 1:26:32
Speaker 10: will not leave me in the victor's hand. Caesar shall
• 1:26:37
Speaker 10: never say he conquered Cato. But oh, my friends, your
• 1:26:42
Speaker 10: safety fills my heart with anxious thoughts. The thousand secret
• 1:26:48
Speaker 10: terrors rise in my soul. How shall I save my friends?
• 1:26:55
Speaker 10: Tis now, O Caesar, I begin to fear thee.
• 1:27:01
Speaker 11: Caesar has mercy. If we ask it of him.
• 1:27:06
Speaker 10: Then ask it. I conjure you let him know what
• 1:27:10
Speaker 10: ever was done against him Cato did it? Add if
• 1:27:15
Speaker 10: you please that I request of him, that I myself,
• 1:27:20
Speaker 10: with tears, request it of him. The virtue of my
• 1:27:24
Speaker 10: friends may pass unpunished. Juba, my heart is troubled for
• 1:27:30
Speaker 10: thy sake. Shall I advise THEE to regain umidia or
• 1:27:35
  Speaker 10: seek the conqueror?
• 1:27:38
Speaker 7: If I forsake THEE whilst U have life, may Heaven
• 1:27:43
Speaker 7: abandon Juba thy virtues.
• 1:27:47
Speaker 10: Prince, if I foresee a aright, will one day make
• 1:27:51
Speaker 10: THEE great at Rome hereafter twill be no crime to
• 1:27:56
Speaker 10: have been Cato's friend. Portius, draw near my son. Thou
• 1:28:02
Speaker 10: oft hast seen thy sire engag'd in a corrupted state,
• 1:28:08
Speaker 10: wrestling with vice and faction. Now thou seest me spent
• 1:28:14
Speaker 10: overpower'd despairing of success. Let me advise thee to retreat
• 1:28:20
Speaker 10: betimes to thy paternal seat, the sabine field, where the
• 1:28:26
Speaker 10: Great sense ore toil'd with his own hands, and all
• 1:28:31
Speaker 10: our frugal ancestors were blest in humble virtues and a
• 1:28:36
Speaker 10: rural life. There live retir'd pray for the peace of Rome,
• 1:28:43
Speaker 10: content thyself to be obscurely good when vice prevails and
• 1:28:50
Speaker 10: impious men bear sway. The post of honor is a
• 1:28:55
  Speaker 10: private station.
• 1:28:57
Speaker 3: I hope my father does not recommend a life to
• 1:29:00
Speaker 3: proach us that he scorns himself.
• 1:29:04
Speaker 10: Farewell, my friends. If there be any of you who
• 1:29:08
Speaker 10: dare not trust the Victor's clemency, know there are ships
• 1:29:13
Speaker 10: prepared by my command that shall convey you to the
• 1:29:18
Speaker 10: wished for port. Is there aught else, my friends, I
• 1:29:22
Speaker 10: can do for you. The conqueror draws near once more, Farewell,
• 1:29:30
Speaker 10: If e'er we meet hereafter, we shall meet in happier
• 1:29:34
Speaker 10: climes and on a safer shore, where Caesar never shall approach.
• 1:29:40
Speaker 1: Us more, pointing to his dead son.
• 1:29:45
Speaker 10: There, the brave youth, with love of virtue, fired, who
• 1:29:50
Speaker 10: greatly in his country's cause expired, shall know he conquered
• 1:29:57
Speaker 10: the firm patriot there who made the welfare of mankind
• 1:30:02
Speaker 10: his care. Though still by faction, vice and fortune, Crost
• 1:30:09
Speaker 10: shall find the generous labor was not lost.
• 1:30:14
Speaker 1: Excellent and of Act four, Act the fifth scene one
• 1:30:22
Speaker 1: a chamber, Kato soulis sitting in a thoughtful posture in
• 1:30:27
Speaker 1: his hand, Plato's book on the Immortality of the Soul,
• 1:30:32
Speaker 1: a drawn sword on the table by him.
• 1:30:35
Speaker 10: It must be so, Plato the reasons well else, whence
• 1:30:41
Speaker 10: this pleasing hope, this fond desire, this longing after immortality?
• 1:30:49
Speaker 10: Or whence this secret dread and inward horror of falling
• 1:30:54
Speaker 10: into naught? Why shrinks the soul back on herself and
• 1:30:59
Speaker 10: startles at destruction? Tis the divinity that stirs within us.
• 1:31:05
Speaker 10: Tis heaven itself that points out and hereafter and intimates
• 1:31:10
Speaker 10: eternity to man eternity, thou pleasing dreadful thought? Through what
• 1:31:18
Speaker 10: variety of untried being? Through what new scenes and changes
• 1:31:24
Speaker 10: must we pass? The wide the unbounded prospect lies before me,
• 1:31:30
Speaker 10: but shadows, clouds, and darkness rest upon it. Here will
• 1:31:37
Speaker 10: I hold if there's a power above us, and that
• 1:31:41
Speaker 10: there is all nature cries aloud through all her works.
• 1:31:48
Speaker 10: He must delight in virtue, and that which he delights
• 1:31:51
Speaker 10: in must be happy. But when or where this world
• 1:31:58
Speaker 10: was made for Caesar? I am weary of conjectures. This
• 1:32:04
  Speaker 10: must end.
• 1:32:05
Speaker 1: Them, laying his hand upon his sword.
• 1:32:09
Speaker 10: Thus am I doubly armed. My death and life, my
• 1:32:14
Speaker 10: bane and antidote are both before me. This, in a
• 1:32:19
Speaker 10: moment brings me to an end. But this informs me
• 1:32:24
Speaker 10: I shall never die. The soul, secured in her existence,
• 1:32:29
Speaker 10: smiles at the drawn dagger and defies its point. The
• 1:32:35
Speaker 10: star shall fade away, The sun himself grow dim with
• 1:32:39
Speaker 10: age in nature, sink in years. But thou shalt flourish
• 1:32:45
Speaker 10: in immortal youth, unhurt amidst the war of elements, the
• 1:32:52
Speaker 10: wreck of matter, and the crush of worlds? What means
• 1:32:56
Speaker 10: this heaviness that hangs upon me, This lethargy that creeps
• 1:33:02
Speaker 10: through all my senses. Nature opprest and harassed out with care,
• 1:33:09
Speaker 10: sinks down to rest? This once I'll favor her, that
• 1:33:15
Speaker 10: my awakened soul may take her flight, renewed in all
• 1:33:20
Speaker 10: her strength and fresh with life, and offering lit for
• 1:33:25
Speaker 10: heav'n let guilt or fear disturb man's rest Cato knows
• 1:33:31
Speaker 10: neither of them, indifferent in his choice to sleep.
• 1:33:37
Speaker 1: Or die and her portias.
• 1:33:40
Speaker 10: But ha, who's this, my son? Why this intrusion? Were
• 1:33:48
Speaker 10: not my orders that I would be private? Why am
• 1:33:53
  Speaker 10: I disobeyed?
• 1:33:55
Speaker 3: Alas my father? What means this sword, this instrument of death?
• 1:34:01
Speaker 3: Let me convey a tense.
• 1:34:03
  Speaker 10: Rash youth forbear.
• 1:34:06
Speaker 3: Oh, let the prayers, the entreatise of your friends that
• 1:34:10
Speaker 3: tears that common danger, wrest it from you?
• 1:34:14
Speaker 10: Wouldst thou betray me? Wouldst thou give me up as slave,
• 1:34:19
Speaker 10: a captive into Caesar's hands, retire and learn obedience to
• 1:34:26
Speaker 10: a father, or no young man.
• 1:34:29
Speaker 3: Look not thusternly on me. You know I'd rather die
• 1:34:34
  Speaker 3: than disobey you.
• 1:34:35
Speaker 10: Tis well again, I master of myself. Now, Caesar, Let
• 1:34:43
Speaker 10: thy troops beset our gates and bar each avenue, thy
• 1:34:49
Speaker 10: gathering fleets, or spread the sea and stop up every port.
• 1:34:55
Speaker 10: Cato shall open to himself a passage and mock thy hopes.
• 1:35:01
Speaker 3: Oh sir, forgive your son, whose grief hangs heavy on him. Oh,
• 1:35:07
Speaker 3: my father, how am I sure it is not the
• 1:35:10
Speaker 3: last time I shall ever call you? So be not displeased, Oh,
• 1:35:16
Speaker 3: be not angry with me whilst I weep, and in
• 1:35:19
Speaker 3: the anguish of my heart beseech you to quit the
• 1:35:22
Speaker 3: dreadful purpose of your soul.
• 1:35:25
Speaker 10: Thou hast been ever good.
• 1:35:28
Speaker 1: And dutiful embracing him.
• 1:35:31
Speaker 10: Weep not, my son, All will be well again. The
• 1:35:36
Speaker 10: righteous gods whom I have sought to please, will succor
• 1:35:41
Speaker 10: Cato and preserve his children.
• 1:35:45
Speaker 3: Your words give comfort to my drooping heart.
• 1:35:49
Speaker 10: Portius, Thou mayest rely upon my conduct. Thy father will
• 1:35:54
Speaker 10: not act what misbecomes him. But go, my son, and
• 1:36:00
Speaker 10: see if art be wanting among thy father's friends. See
• 1:36:05
Speaker 10: them embark'd, and tell me if the winds and seize,
• 1:36:09
Speaker 10: befriend them. My soul is quite weighted down with care,
• 1:36:14
Speaker 10: and asks the soft refreshment of a moment's sleep.
• 1:36:19
Speaker 3: My thoughts are more at ease.
• 1:36:22
Speaker 1: My heart revives exit Cato and a Marcia.
• 1:36:28
Speaker 3: Oh, marsieur, Oh, my sister. Still there's hope. Our father
• 1:36:34
Speaker 3: will not cast away a life so needful to us
• 1:36:38
Speaker 3: all and to his country. He is retired to rest
• 1:36:42
Speaker 3: and seems to cherish thoughts full of peace. He has
• 1:36:47
Speaker 3: dispatched me, hence with orders that bespeak a mind composed
• 1:36:52
Speaker 3: and studious for the safety of his friends. Marsia, take
• 1:36:57
Speaker 3: care that none disturb slumbers.
• 1:37:01
Speaker 8: Exit, Oh ye, immortal powers that guard the just, watch
• 1:37:06
Speaker 8: round his couch and soften his repose. Banish his sorrows
• 1:37:10
Speaker 8: and becalm his soul with easy dreams. Remember all his virtues,
• 1:37:14
Speaker 8: and show mankind that goodness is your care.
• 1:37:18
Speaker 9: And you, Lucia, where is your father, monsieur, where is Kato?
• 1:37:23
Speaker 8: Lucia speak low, he is retired to rest. Lucy, I
• 1:37:27
Speaker 8: feel a gentle, dawning hope rise in my soul. We
• 1:37:31
Speaker 8: shall be happy still.
• 1:37:33
Speaker 9: Alas I tremble when I think on Kato. In every view,
• 1:37:37
Speaker 9: in every thought, I tremble. Kato is stern and awful
• 1:37:41
Speaker 9: as a god. He knows not how to wing at
• 1:37:44
Speaker 9: human frailty or pardon weakness that he never felt.
• 1:37:49
Speaker 8: Though stern and awful to the foes of Rome, he
• 1:37:51
Speaker 8: is all goodness. Lucia, always mild, compassionate and gentle to
• 1:37:55
Speaker 8: his friends, filled with domestic tenderness, the best, the kindest father.
• 1:38:00
Speaker 8: I have ever found him, easy and good and bounteous
• 1:38:03
  Speaker 8: to my wishes.
• 1:38:05
Speaker 9: Tis his consent alone can make us blessed. Marcieur, We
• 1:38:09
Speaker 9: both are equally involved in the same intricate, perplexed distress.
• 1:38:14
Speaker 9: The cruel hand of fate that has destroyed our brother Marcus,
• 1:38:18
Speaker 9: whom we both lament.
• 1:38:20
Speaker 8: And ever shall lament.
• 1:38:21
Speaker 9: Unhappy youth has set my soul at large, and now
• 1:38:25
Speaker 9: I stand loose of my vow. But who knows Cato's thoughts.
• 1:38:30
Speaker 9: Who knows how yet he may dispose of porsches, or
• 1:38:33
Speaker 9: how he has determined of himself.
• 1:38:36
Speaker 8: Let him but live, commit the rest to heaven, Andrew.
• 1:38:41
Speaker 11: Lucius, Sweet are the slumbers of the virtuous man, Oh Marcia.
• 1:38:48
Speaker 11: I have seen thy godlike father. Some power invisible supports
• 1:38:54
Speaker 11: his soul and bears it up in all its wonted greatness,
• 1:38:59
Speaker 11: a kind the refreshing sleep is fallen upon him. I
• 1:39:04
Speaker 11: saw him stretched tease, his fancy lost in pleasing dreams.
• 1:39:10
Speaker 11: As I drew near his couch, he smiled and cried, Caesar,
• 1:39:16
Speaker 11: thou canst not hurt me?
• 1:39:19
Speaker 8: His mind still labors with some dreadful thought.
• 1:39:23
  Speaker 1: Entered Juba, Lucius.
• 1:39:25
Speaker 7: The horsemen are returned from viewing the number, strength, and
• 1:39:30
Speaker 7: pasture of our foes, who now encamp within a short
• 1:39:34
Speaker 7: hour's march on the high point of yon bright western tower.
• 1:39:40
Speaker 7: Weakened them from afar. The setting sun plays on their
• 1:39:44
Speaker 7: shining arms and burnished helmets, and covers all the field
• 1:39:49
Speaker 7: with gleams of fire.
• 1:39:52
Speaker 11: Monsieur, tis time we should awake thy father. Caesar is
• 1:39:57
Speaker 11: still disposed to give us terms, and waits at distance
• 1:40:01
Speaker 11: till he hears from Kato and her portias portious thy
• 1:40:08
Speaker 11: looks speak somewhat of importance? What tidings dost thou bring? Methinks?
• 1:40:15
Speaker 11: I see unusual gladness sparkle in thy eyes.
• 1:40:19
Speaker 3: As I was hasting to the port where now my
• 1:40:22
Speaker 3: father's friends, impatient for a passage, accuse the lingering winds.
• 1:40:28
Speaker 3: A sail arrived from Pompey's son, who, through the realms
• 1:40:33
Speaker 3: of Spain, calls out for vengeance on his father's death,
• 1:40:37
Speaker 3: and rouses the whole nation up to arms, where Cato
• 1:40:42
Speaker 3: at their head once more might roam, assert her rights
• 1:40:47
