- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37I've heard someone say I was one way, I'm one way in business and
- 0:40I'm another way in church with spiritual things.
- 0:43I don't read with that soul in the word of God.
- 0:46I don't read with that soul. He said we are to do all things
- 0:49that's unto the Lord. Everything, every thought should
- 0:53be brought into the captivity and obedience of Jesus Christ,
- 0:57not be one way one place and then another way in another
- 1:01arena. We are all servants of the Lord
- 1:04first. What happens when you live one
- 1:07way at church in another way everywhere else?
- 1:10In today's message, Pastor Lewis confronts the idea that you can
- 1:14be one person in business and another in spiritual things.
- 1:18The Word of God never allows that split life.
- 1:21The Scripture says to do everything is unto the Lord,
- 1:25bringing every thought into obedience to Christ.
- 1:29God can keep your heart undivided when you serve Him
- 1:32first in every area. How do you make sure every part
- 1:35of your life is lived is unto the Lord?
- 1:38Well, let's join Pastor Lewis in First Timothy Chapter 3 with
- 1:41today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:45Turning your Bibles to First Timothy chapter 3.
- 1:49So why don't we pray and then let's go into the word of
- 1:51Godfather. We do thank you for once again
- 1:54we get opportunity to learn from you, Lord, to get into Your
- 1:58word, the truth, the living Word.
- 2:01Lord, Your word is living. And we thank you that we have
- 2:04the privilege, Lord, to hear Your Word and to sit under that
- 2:07word and have that word do its work in us.
- 2:10We ask God now that you would bless us with the anointing that
- 2:15comes from on high. Lord, if you're not speaking, if
- 2:19you're not giving us what to say and what to hear, if you don't
- 2:22open up our eyes and our understanding, our hearts to the
- 2:27revelation of this Word, Lord, we will not receive anything.
- 2:32So we ask God that you will pour out your wisdom on us.
- 2:36Pour out your understanding Lord, and help us, O God, to be
- 2:40able to receive from your word. We ask all these things in the
- 2:43name of our Savior and our Lord. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
- 2:48We're in First Timothy and we are in chapter 3.
- 2:53Now. Last week we did talk about the
- 2:57elders and the qualifications of the elders.
- 3:00And as we went through that list, I just want to remind
- 3:04everybody that as we go through these, these qualifications,
- 3:07these lists of qualifications, we're not going through this in
- 3:10a way that it's religious or that it's legalistic or anything
- 3:13of that nature. It's not that anybody is just
- 3:15looking and watching and say, oh, OK, I'll check the box on
- 3:18that. That's not what this is about.
- 3:21None of this can be done without the empowerment of the Holy
- 3:24Spirit, which is why in the book of Acts, before Jesus even sent
- 3:29the disciples anywhere to do any ministry, to do any witnessing,
- 3:33he said, wait, wait for the power to come and the Holy
- 3:38Spirit will come upon you and then you will be witnesses unto
- 3:42me in Jerusalem and in Judea and in Samaria and to the other
- 3:46parts of the world. We can't do any of that without
- 3:48the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.
- 3:52So as we go through these qualifications, I just want you
- 3:55to keep in mind that these are things that we are all, each and
- 3:59everyone of us are seeking God to help us with.
- 4:03These are the things that we are pressing into the Lord to help
- 4:07us to attain. And we have to be like Paul.
- 4:09And so I'm not yet obtained and I'm not yet apprehended.
- 4:13I can't keep in mind what I've done yesterday.
- 4:15I can't keep remembering how I fell short yesterday.
- 4:18I got to look to what's ahead of me, man.
- 4:20I got a press toward the mark of God, the high calling of God in
- 4:24Christ Jesus. So this is what we need to do on
- 4:27a regular basis. So this is not a religious or
- 4:30legalistic list, but there are things that that Paul is saying
- 4:34that as a Deacon or as a elder or a pastor, these are the
- 4:40things that we are looking and seeking God to possess so that
- 4:45we could be a blessing to the people in the ministry and also
- 4:50be a good example to people who are outside of the ministry.
- 4:53Amen. Amen.
- 4:55Let's talk about the qualifications of the deacons.
- 4:59Before we do that, let's go to Acts chapter 6.
- 5:02We can turn back there just for one second.
- 5:04This is the best description and this is actually the foundation
- 5:08or the genesis of where the ministry of the deacons have
- 5:12started and starting there in verse one, Acts chapter 6, it
- 5:15says Now in those days when the number of the disciples was
- 5:18multiplying, there arose A complaint against the Hebrews by
- 5:22the Hellenists because the widows were neglected in the
- 5:26daily distribution. Then the 12 summoned the
- 5:30multitude of the disciples and said it is not desirable that we
- 5:34should leave the Word of God and serve tables.
- 5:38Now, when we say that it's not that Peter and the disciples
- 5:41were saying that this work is beneath us, that's not what he
- 5:44was saying. What he is saying is that by
- 5:47doing this it does take away from the ministry that we are
- 5:50called to. Everyone has a ministry that
- 5:53we're called to, and by doing things that is actually a
- 5:57ministry or a service that someone else could be called to,
- 6:01it takes away from our own. But he is not saying in any way
- 6:05that we are above serving tables.
- 6:08We do it all the time. It's not that we're above
- 6:11serving table or serving tables is beneath us.
- 6:14It is not. It's not beneath us to run the
- 6:16vacuum sweeper in here. It's not beneath us to pick up a
- 6:19broom. It's not beneath pastors to wipe
- 6:22off tables and to serve people when we have our feast or our
- 6:26fellowships together. It's not beneath us to do any of
- 6:29those things. But what these men understood is
- 6:32that God had brought forth a need.
- 6:35He has shown a need. And when God does that, he's
- 6:39doing that for a purpose because there's purpose and people who
- 6:42are called to do those things. That's why even here, whenever
- 6:47you see something that you sense is lacking and you come to
- 6:50leadership and say, you know this is lacking, we should be
- 6:53able to do this or, or is it possible that we can do this?
- 6:56That's a ministry that God has probably laid on your heart.
- 6:59We support you and pray for you to go forth and doing those
- 7:03things. It's something that the Lord has
- 7:06exposed. So anywhere this says here that
- 7:08it's not that we should serve tables, but therefore, brethren,
- 7:11seek out from among you 7 men of good reputation, full of the
- 7:16Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.
- 7:21But we will ourselves continually.
- 7:24And this is the ministry that the pastors and the elders are
- 7:29called to do, is to give ourselves continually to prayer
- 7:33and to the ministry of the Word. In other words, even the
- 7:37oversight of the church. So that is the foundation, that
- 7:41is the genesis of where the whole position of deacons have
- 7:46come from. Now, it doesn't mention the word
- 7:49deacons there, but the word Deacon in the diaconose is
- 7:53actually Greek for servant or service minister.
- 7:59It's a servant and which we all are.
- 8:01But this particular service is geared toward helping the
- 8:05physical matters of the church. And that's exactly what deacons
- 8:09do. Just as the pastors and the
- 8:11elders are given to the ministry of the Word and prayer and the
- 8:15oversight of the church, well, for deacons, they are given to
- 8:19the physical ministry of the church, the practical ministry
- 8:23of the church. They take care of the structure
- 8:26of the church, the outside and the inside needs of the church,
- 8:31physical needs of the church. That's why we have deacons here
- 8:35who will take care of lights if they need to be taken care of or
- 8:38electrical issues that come up. And some of the other structures
- 8:42that come. And you'll see them with ladders
- 8:43and doing things that I may not be equipped to do or have the
- 8:47understanding to do, but they just come right in and they do
- 8:50it. They see the need, they come
- 8:51right in and they do it. And that's the ministry of the
- 8:55deacons. And in addition to that, they
- 8:57also take care of a lot of the administrative things in the
- 9:00church as well. You know, they deal with, you
- 9:02know, when we used to do offerings, they would help to
- 9:04take the offerings and a lot of the deacons will help in
- 9:07counting the money in the offerings and things of that
- 9:10nature to help to distribute to the people who have need.
- 9:14A lot of times the deacons are involved in that service as
- 9:18well. So it is a noble service and it
- 9:21is something that men are called to do and they do it with
- 9:25everything in them. Now, as we said last week, we do
- 9:29have, I think I said 3, but we actually have 4 that are elders
- 9:33and pastors. Myself and Clark are the two
- 9:36pastors currently in George Pernis and John Morris.
- 9:40Those are our two elders. But collectively we deal with
- 9:44the oversight or the spiritual oversight of the church.
- 9:48And then we have those who are the deacons in our church, and
- 9:52that is Tom Brubaker, Brad Cheney, and Nick Steele.
- 9:56And they deal with the physical needs of the church, the
- 10:00structural needs of the church, including the financial and
- 10:04administration. And some of them serve in a lot
- 10:06of other ministries as well. A lot of those men teach.
- 10:09These men are able to teach. That might not be one of the
- 10:12qualifications under the name Deacon, but these men are
- 10:15qualified men to teach. This church has been blessed.
- 10:19I don't know if you're aware, but this church has been blessed
- 10:21with many men who are able and qualified to teach, who go into
- 10:27the Word of God and teach. It doesn't have to be me.
- 10:29They could be a number of other men that'd be standing here
- 10:32instead of me. There are many men in this
- 10:34church who have a teaching gift and they are able to teach.
- 10:38There are many women in this church who have a awesome
- 10:41teaching gift as well. So this church has been blessed
- 10:45with men and women who are qualified to teach the word of
- 10:49God. And it's such a blessing because
- 10:52the understanding of the doctrine is there and it's
- 10:55evident throughout everyone who is here.
- 10:57And I like it because I'm OK with being accountable to
- 11:00someone. If I say something that's not
- 11:02right, please let me know. And I know that these are men
- 11:05and women who study. So if they were to pull me aside
- 11:08and say that, I know I can trust it because these aren't just
- 11:11people who just say, well, emotionally I didn't like what
- 11:14you said. No, these are people were saying
- 11:15I know that it wasn't right based on from the word of God
- 11:18and they would be able to show that to me.
- 11:19So we're we're blessed with that concern.
- 11:22So anyway, it says here verse starting at verse 8.
- 11:25It says likewise deacons must be reverent, not double tongue, not
- 11:30given too much wine, not greedy for money.
- 11:34OK, so he says they must be reverent and that just simply
- 11:37means there must be men who are worthy of respect, men who carry
- 11:42themselves in a way spiritually that they are worthy of respect.
- 11:47People see their lives and respect them as men of God.
- 11:51And that is a blessing because even children, and that's one
- 11:54thing that you cannot fool. You can't fool children.
- 11:57They know when you have the right heart.
- 11:59They know when you have a heart for God, a heart that's tender,
- 12:04a heart that's even when you're correction of a child, they know
- 12:08that there is God in you. They know that there's a spirit
- 12:12of kindness, a spirit of goodness in you, a spirit of
- 12:15love and protection. They know that, They know that.
- 12:18So when they too are respectful of deacons or and when the
- 12:22adults respect these men, that is what exactly a Deacon should
- 12:26be. They should be men who walk in
- 12:28respect. Not only are they respected, but
- 12:30they're also men who respect others.
- 12:33And so we also understand that this character that a Deacon
- 12:37has, it's worth imitating. And I can tell you the truth
- 12:40that the men that we have here that serve as deacons, I would
- 12:43have no problem if my sons were to look at these men as examples
- 12:48of spiritual or Christian character.
- 12:51I would have no problem with that.
- 12:53The the men who have been serving here as deacons have
- 12:56been men that we have been able to, I've been able to watch over
- 13:00my time being here. Many of them were here before me
- 13:03and I can tell you that I've seen that they love their
- 13:06families, they love God, they love God's Word, and they love
- 13:10God's people and that's important.
- 13:12That is very important. They've demonstrated honesty,
- 13:16they've demonstrated knowledge of the Word and love for Jesus
- 13:19Christ and God and his Son Jesus Christ.
- 13:22Their families are here in the church and they are men who are
- 13:26faithful to their families. These are men that I have,
- 13:29again, I have no problem watching them and seeing them as
- 13:33good examples. And at the same time, while they
- 13:36are respected, they respect, they're not double tongue.
- 13:39That means they're not 2 faced. Anybody remember the, the name 2
- 13:42faced it, the term 2 faced it. We don't hear that much anymore,
- 13:45but that person is 2 faced it. What does that mean?
- 13:47You know, these are men who are not double tongue or they're not
- 13:512 faced it. That means that they're not
- 13:52gossips. They're not saying one thing to
- 13:54one person and saying something totally different to someone
- 13:57else. So it's almost like it's two
- 13:59different people. They come out of a meeting, they
- 14:01tell some people, oh man, that was a great meeting.
- 14:04That person did a really good job explaining that.
- 14:06And, and that was that was awesome.
- 14:08I, I feel like I understand, I feel like I've learned.
- 14:10Then they go to someone else. Did that person prepare?
- 14:13They didn't sound like they made any sense, you know, and it's,
- 14:15it's just like they're double tongue.
- 14:16They say one thing about one way and one thing another way.
- 14:20And these are the kind of things that inner church can cause
- 14:23discord. You know, when people are saying
- 14:25different things to different people can cause discord.
- 14:28But it also takes away from the character of the man who would
- 14:32do it, because people then come to the point where they can't
- 14:35trust what that person is saying.
- 14:37But a Deacon is a man who does not gossip, first of all.
- 14:41And when he does say anything that needs to be said, it's the
- 14:44truth. And so he's saying it the same
- 14:47every time. He's not changing it.
- 14:49But a Deacon is also a man who was dependable.
- 14:52He's dependable and he has no intent to deceive anyone.
- 14:56In his heart. There's no God found in him.
- 14:58There's no selfish intention in these men who are serving as
- 15:03deacons, but they're reliable. They're reliable.
- 15:06When they say that they're going to take care of something, they
- 15:09take care of it. They say they're going to do
- 15:10something. They do it.
- 15:12And that's very important in terms of a man who serves as a
- 15:16Deacon. Now here it says not giving too
- 15:18much one. Now, this is interesting because
- 15:20the elders, they were not to be given to wine at all.
- 15:24So I guess the deacons don't have to be given to no wine, but
- 15:26they can be given to some wine, just not much wine.
- 15:31But actually even the elders are due to are called to to walk in
- 15:35moderation whenever it is that they were to, to drink wine.
- 15:39You do it in moderation. And the deacons are the same.
- 15:43And we've already talked about those things last week
- 15:46concerning drinking wine, not being given too much wine.
- 15:49But I do want to say one thing. I just want to look at one thing
- 15:51back here there in Ephesians, it kind of gives a good, actually a
- 15:55very good description of the attitude that should be taken
- 15:59when it comes to an alcoholic beverage like wine.
- 16:02And that's mainly what the what the Bible talks about in the New
- 16:05Testament, it's talking about wine.
- 16:07But in Ephesians chapter 5 and in verse 18, it simply says and
- 16:13do not be drunk with wine, which is in dissipation or debauchery,
- 16:18but be filled with, I'm sorry, be filled with the Spirit.
- 16:23OK, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual
- 16:27songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.
- 16:30So not to be filled with wine, which does speak to moderation,
- 16:35but to not do it excessively, but to be filled with the
- 16:38Spirit. So I guess sometimes it comes to
- 16:40a point where we have to make a decision, am I going to be
- 16:41filled with this wine or am I going to be filled by the
- 16:43Spirit? I'd rather be filled with the
- 16:45spirit. Let's walk in the spirit.
- 16:47So then it says here, the next one he mentions is not to be
- 16:50greedy for money. Don't be greedy for money.
- 16:53And we talked about that too with the elders, but it's a
- 16:56little bit different with the deacons because the deacons
- 16:59actually are involved in the counting of money.
- 17:02They're pretty close. They work pretty closely with
- 17:04the money. I never see the money.
- 17:06I never see the money. But the deacons, they count the
- 17:08money and they can be involved in distributing money to other
- 17:12people who have need. So it's important that they are
- 17:16responsible in that area and that they're not greedy for
- 17:20money. Because if they are greedy for
- 17:22money, they could be tempted. They could be tempted if they
- 17:26have a need, if their bills aren't being paid and they have
- 17:28financial needs that need to be taken care of and and they don't
- 17:32see how they're going to be able to do it.
- 17:34If they don't have a control, they don't have control on this
- 17:37being greedy for money and have that control that they need to
- 17:40have that self-control, the spirit in them that helps them
- 17:44to, to deal with these things with the level of integrity that
- 17:47the church requires or that the Lord requires, not the church
- 17:50the Lord requires. It can be tempting for them to
- 17:53steal money or to use the, the months for the money for
- 17:56personal needs. So we need to make sure that we
- 18:00observe that the people who are involved with the money are men
- 18:04who have the integrity and the women who have the the integrity
- 18:08to do that without having to worry about any impropriety.
- 18:12Now, I can say that as long as I've been here, in fact, I've
- 18:15never heard anything here concerning any impropriety
- 18:18financially here. You know, the men and women who
- 18:21have dealt with the money and it's mainly been men, but the
- 18:24ones who have dealt with the money, they have done it with
- 18:27the highest level of integrity, highest level of integrity.
- 18:31I have no problems about giving to this church and wondering
- 18:33about where it goes. We don't never have any issues
- 18:36with that. There are two, I've learned when
- 18:38I was growing up, there are two ministries that we have to be
- 18:41particularly careful of putting people.
- 18:44You know, when we select people to go into ministries, there's
- 18:46two in particular that we have to be very careful of.
- 18:48One ministry is always going to be the finance ministry because
- 18:52that's the money. And again, for the reasons why
- 18:54we just stated, you know, the temptation for someone who has a
- 18:57need. But the other is a children's
- 18:58ministry. Got to be careful with the we
- 19:01got to protect our babies. Got to protect our babies.
- 19:05So we have to be careful and we have to be maybe a little bit
- 19:07more a little bit more scrutiny, maybe involved and looking at
- 19:11the background of people in those two positions before they
- 19:15are appointed and let go to deal in those of the functioning
- 19:19those ministries. So verse 9 now verse 9 says a
- 19:22holding the ministry of the faith with a pure conscience,
- 19:26the ministry of the faith holding the ministry of the
- 19:28faith. What is the ministry of the
- 19:30faith? Well, the, the mystery is always
- 19:32a hidden truth. Mystery is a hidden truth.
- 19:35Something that's healed, that's not something that's hidden,
- 19:37that's not been revealed. And a Deacon must hold the
- 19:41mystery of the faith, must hold it before them.
- 19:45It must be something that's out in front of them.
- 19:47So what is the mystery? That God came in the flesh and
- 19:50died for our sins. For a lot of people, that's a
- 19:52mystery. Those who are outside the church
- 19:53don't understand that. They don't believe that They
- 19:55can't reconcile that in their hearts, you know, it's something
- 19:58that they just can't grab a hold of.
- 20:00But those who are inside the church, those of us who are
- 20:02believers, we understand that. And we believe that and we
- 20:05receive that. And that's the mystery of the
- 20:08truth. That's the mystery of the faith.
- 20:10You see, the mystery of the gospel was once hidden.
- 20:13There was a time that was sent. It was even hidden from the
- 20:15prophets who spoke it at that particular time.
- 20:18They never really saw it to come to be.
- 20:21But we, those things have been revealed to us.
- 20:24It's been revealed to us. We have seen this come to be so
- 20:29deacons are to not only understand the doctrine of that
- 20:32faith, but also to obey it. So they walk in that faith with
- 20:35sincere with a sincere conscience.
- 20:38Sincere conscience meaning that they understand the difference
- 20:42that between good and evil and able to make decisions between
- 20:46good and evil. And if there is some violation
- 20:49of whatever behavior, if there's been some sin, that person is
- 20:53still keeps a pure conscience because they go and bring it to
- 20:56the Lord and they repent. Confession is made, they're
- 21:00purified by the blood of Jesus. So as deacons that facilitate
- 21:05the matters of the church, church building or the church
- 21:08business, they have to do it based on the word of God.
- 21:12Very important that we do it based on the word of God.
- 21:15Now everybody has constitutions, everybody has man written rules
- 21:22or bylaws and things of that nature.
- 21:25And that's fine, that's fine. But none of those things are
- 21:28more important than the Word of God.
- 21:31When we make a decision, it must be made based on the Word of
- 21:38God, not a bylaw, not a constitution.
- 21:41And in the church, the bylaws and constitutions or whatever is
- 21:45written to try to govern or manage the ministry, that should
- 21:49be done based on the Word of God.
- 21:52I've heard it spoken before and it never sat right in my spirit.
- 21:56I've heard someone say I was one way.
- 21:58I'm one way in business and I'm another way in church with
- 22:01spiritual things. I don't read with that soul in
- 22:04the word of God. I don't read with that soul.
- 22:07He said we're to do all things. That's unto the Lord.
- 22:09Everything, every thought should be brought into the captivity
- 22:13and obedience of Jesus Christ, not be one way one place and
- 22:18then another way in another arena.
- 22:20We are all servants of the Lord first.
- 22:24So that is so important that when we do business or when we
- 22:29have meetings and things of that nature, that what we discuss or
- 22:32what we decide, it's all based on the word of God and not
- 22:37someone's good idea, not some strategy in business that works
- 22:40for the world. We should not sit into a
- 22:43business meeting in the church and feel like we're sitting in a
- 22:46Fortune 500 corporate business meeting.
- 22:48Should feel that way. We should understand that we're
- 22:51sitting with brothers and sisters who fear, acknowledge,
- 22:54and uphold the Word of God. Amen.
- 22:58Then in verse 10, it says it talks about being tested, he
- 23:02said, but let these be tested first.
- 23:04Then let them serve as deacons being found blameless.
- 23:09This testing means be to prove them.
- 23:11They should be proved and we should be watching their lives
- 23:14and seeing how a man conducts himself in different situations.
- 23:18You know, we can see the best of people here in church every
- 23:21Sunday. We can see the best of people.
- 23:23Everybody's wearing a smile, everybody's shaking hands,
- 23:25everybody's hugging. But what we need to see in
- 23:27ministry, when you put someone in a position like this, So what
- 23:30happens if somebody disagrees with you?
- 23:32What happens when adversity hits?
- 23:34How do you deal with that? How do you deal with a situation
- 23:37when you're offended? How do you deal with that?
- 23:39So we have to see people in different than decision making.
- 23:41When you have to make a decision, how was that dealt
- 23:44with? Do you do it based on your
- 23:46knowledge of the word of God or do you do it based on worldly
- 23:49knowledge? All these are things that has to
- 23:51be taken under consideration. That's why people need to be
- 23:54proved or tested. Here on Living Waters of Grace,
- 23:59we're in the books of First and Second Timothy.
- 24:01Pastor Louis Harrell is walking us through these letters written
- 24:05from Paul to Timothy. Toward the end of these letters,
- 24:08Paul is anticipating that his time here on earth is coming to
- 24:12a close. He's giving some final words of
- 24:15advice to his mentee. Paul writes in Second Timothy 4,
- 24:19verse seven. I have fought the good fight.
- 24:21I have finished the race. I have kept the faith wherever
- 24:25you are in your journey of faith with God, our hope is that you
- 24:29have the willingness to fight for what's true, not
- 24:33compromising, but holding fast to the Word of God.
- 24:37Paul was reminding Timothy of this, and it's a good reminder
- 24:41for you and for me today too. For helpful input throughout
