Transcript
- 0:05Welcome everybody to Mom St. USA.
- 0:07My name is Jackie AKA Wishes Mama and I am joined for this
- 0:10hub episode by our good friends Duck and Jess AKA Beanie Duck.
- 0:15And today's topic is pin trading one O 1.
- 0:19So we haven't really talked a ton about pin trading on Mom St.
- 0:24We talked a little bit about it on our Disney Collections for
- 0:27Kids episode a few months back, but we haven't really tackled
- 0:31the topic of pin trading. So that is today's topic.
- 0:35We're hoping to give you a little bit of background talk, a
- 0:38little bit about what it is, how it works, what to do, all those
- 0:42kind of basics. So Duck and Jess, before we hop
- 0:45in, how are you guys doing today?
- 0:47Doing pretty good. I'm like you said, I'm chomping
- 0:49at the bit to get after this. I'm so excited.
- 0:53I love it yes. So let's go ahead and hop in so
- 0:56we don't have to wait any further to impart our knowledge
- 1:00on our lovely Mom St. listeners here.
- 1:03So let's talk about pin trading. All right, so pin trading, pin
- 1:08trading is as to me is somebody in this culture, and I think a
- 1:13lot of people who are just aware of it in general, like is as
- 1:16synonymous with Disney parks as Mickey Mouse is, right?
- 1:19Like it is like truly integral to the history of Disney parks
- 1:24and activities to be done within the park.
- 1:26So throughout today, I hope we're going to touch on some
- 1:30we're going to touch on some of the basics, give you a little
- 1:33bit of insight into, you know, I think you said it earlier,
- 1:36Jackie, what is pin trading? How did this get started?
- 1:39Some basic information for you to know as a starter into this
- 1:43world and and just some general 101 information about it.
- 1:47So it's expensive, but it's a really fun.
- 1:51Yeah, but it doesn't have to be right?
- 1:53Like you can, you can make this, you can let it get out of
- 1:56control like we did or, or like you can keep it a very
- 2:00manageable, respectable lanyard full of pins, right?
- 2:04Like you can as normal or as extreme about it as you want.
- 2:07And that's the fun thing about this hobby, right?
- 2:09Like you can collect a huge variety of different things, or
- 2:12you can focus on one character or one movie, or maybe there's
- 2:16like a particular line that releases that you really like,
- 2:18like a theme. So there's lots and lots to see
- 2:21and enjoy within the hobby. So I think that's it.
- 2:24I think let's talk about it. So let's start with the
- 2:26question, what is pin trading? Yes, Jess, what is pin trading?
- 2:30I'm so glad you're going to answer that.
- 2:34So Disney Pin Trading is buying and trading either with cast
- 2:38members or with guests at the parks, collectible pins that
- 2:42feature Disney characters, Disney parks attractions,
- 2:45different icons of the parks and Disney as a whole and other, you
- 2:50know, different elements of just the Disney brand.
- 2:53So trading most commonly takes place within the Disney parks.
- 2:57But and Disney also puts on a yearly pin event.
- 3:01I believe they do them in on both coasts, but definitely
- 3:05Orlando does one every year where it's a separate ticketed
- 3:08event. Usually takes place like near in
- 3:11the Epcot area. It can be in the UPCOT area.
- 3:14It's also taken place in contemporary before.
- 3:16So it just kind of. Wherever has like a big event
- 3:18space in the parks, they'll host it in there and there's special,
- 3:23you know, limited edition pins that kind of follow whatever the
- 3:25theme of that year's event is. They show previews of upcoming
- 3:28pins and things like that at those events.
- 3:32And you can also do pin trading at those events obviously as
- 3:35well. No, you're actually supposedly
- 3:37not allowed to say. Can you imagine if they did
- 3:41that, that people would exceed? Yeah.
- 3:44Yep, Yep, Yep. There's also a lot of local
- 3:48events where people do pin trading.
- 3:52A big pin group in this area is the Central Jersey Pin Trading
- 3:55Group. Just a quick shout out to them.
- 3:57They're all amazing. They have helped me source many
- 3:59pieces in my collection. They're very kind.
- 4:03It happened. There's lots and lots of local
- 4:04groups. So just like start all over your
- 4:07area. Plus Disney pin trading,
- 4:09Facebook will come up. Ours does like a little
- 4:11convention, like nice like four or five times a year, like every
- 4:16couple of months everybody gets together.
- 4:17They just like rent out a room and like a Marriott somewhere in
- 4:20Jersey and, and everybody goes and they they pin trade.
- 4:23It's a lot of fun. It's really cool.
- 4:25I've seen other areas. I follow Youtubers that live in
- 4:27like Canada and they go to pin events there.
- 4:29So like literally all over wherever there is like a Disney
- 4:32culture, there will be pin trading events probably
- 4:35happening. Also, online groups are really
- 4:38big. I'm in a couple of those and
- 4:40I've done, you know, pin trading with people all over the country
- 4:42and all over the world. So there's, you know, online
- 4:45groups as well that you can use to pin trade.
- 4:47So lots of different avenues to do it, but the parks is
- 4:50obviously the main spot. So when you're trading in the
- 4:53parks or at different events, only official Disney pins can be
- 4:57traded. We'll get into non official
- 5:00Disney pins in a second, but official Disney pins include
- 5:04pins purchased from the parks. But also stores like Box Lunch,
- 5:08Hot Topic, Walmart's sell them. Sometimes people have found them
- 5:14all over the place. Some people get them at like
- 5:15Hobby Lobby and stuff. So like all kinds of places do
- 5:19sell like officially licensed Disney pins.
- 5:21So those are the only ones though that can be traded in the
- 5:25parks. There is also the concept of
- 5:28fantasy pins, so we have one right here to show these.
- 5:32For the for the visual folks, I I know that not ever, I know
- 5:35there's some people listening to this, but for the visual folks,
- 5:38we have watched a quick example. So fantasy pins are fan made
- 5:43pins that feature Disney characters.
- 5:45Oftentimes they feature like mash ups of a couple of
- 5:48different, you know, Disney properties are like this pin
- 5:51which combine Disney and Marvel with the Loki, you know, Gator
- 5:55and Peter Pan. So those pins typically people
- 5:58will make and sell on like Etsy shops and things like that.
- 6:01So these are not official Disney pins, so they cannot be traded
- 6:03in the parks. But again, you might find it
- 6:06like those online communities or maybe in pin events where like
- 6:08people have specifically fantasy pins or trade, but you can
- 6:12really only trade fantasy pins for other fantasy pins, not for
- 6:14official Disney pins, at least in the parks.
- 6:17Yeah, that totally makes sense. So for those of you who cannot
- 6:20see what we just showed, just explained it a little bit, but
- 6:23it is a pin featuring the alligator Loki from that TV show
- 6:29also along, yes, with with a Peter Pan character, kind of,
- 6:36you know, elbow leaning on him. So that is the fantasy pin that
- 6:40the duck showed on our video here.
- 6:42So yes, like just mentioned, if you've got fantasy pins and want
- 6:46to trade someone else for another fantasy pin, that is
- 6:48totally fine. I don't necessarily anticipate
- 6:51that you find those much in the parks.
- 6:53That's more of kind of like those pin trading events that
- 6:56you would see that type of thing at.
- 6:57Yeah. And there is like a very strong
- 7:02rule in the pin trading community that like, it's
- 7:05totally OK for you to have fantasy pins, for you to add
- 7:08them to the your collection. There's all kinds of really
- 7:10great, interesting, cool concepts that people can come up
- 7:13with. But you need to make it clear
- 7:15that what you are selling or trading is a fantasy pin and
- 7:19it's not an official Disney pin. And most of the time people
- 7:21don't care because they just want it because it's cool.
- 7:24But there is a strong culture of just making sure that you are
- 7:26like clearly representing exactly what it is and that it's
- 7:30not an official pin, Disney pin. Yeah, and that goes for any pin
- 7:33that you're trading, right? Like if you know, and we'll get
- 7:35into real pin scrappers, that kind of stuff.
- 7:38But like, you always just want to be upfront, you know, be a
- 7:40kind human when it comes to trading.
- 7:41And again, we'll talk about that in a little bit here, but let's
- 7:44just do a brief history because I feel like we can't really talk
- 7:47about pin trading without talking about why in the world
- 7:50we do it. Like, why is it even a thing?
- 7:53Where did it come from? So the very first Disney pin was
- 7:59actually released all the way back in 1930, and it was a pin
- 8:03that was released in honor of the Mickey Mouse Club, but
- 8:06television show that was on. So thought that was pretty cool.
- 8:10But pins have always been around as souvenirs in the Disney parks
- 8:14from the very beginning. Trading has not always been
- 8:17around from the very beginning. And we'll talk about that here
- 8:20in a moment. But you can trace back to
- 8:22finding these pins that were for sale as souvenirs all the way
- 8:25back to the beginnings of Disneyland.
- 8:27So they've definitely been in the Disney parks culture for as
- 8:31long as the Disney parks have been around.
- 8:34And I will just say officially sanctioned Disney pin trading
- 8:37has not been around. Very true, right?
- 8:41Ever since pins became a thing, people have been trading them,
- 8:44right? Like all the way back to, I
- 8:45don't know when they were created, the 1800s or something
- 8:47like I who knows, something like that.
- 8:49Hate probably knows. Let's be real.
- 8:51Hate probably knows of. Of if I had to tag a specific
- 8:55friend, it would be Kate for her to just know the history of pin
- 8:58badges off the top of her head. So I do know that they go.
- 9:02I do know that the the concept of pin training goes back at.
- 9:06Least as far. As I think it was the 1898,
- 9:10something like that Olympics, like the late 1800s and I'll
- 9:14talk a little bit about like how that influenced Disney.
- 9:16And in just a hot 2nd, did you want to mention anything else
- 9:20about souvenirs before launch into my little history lesson?
- 9:22No. Let's hear about pin trading and
- 9:24the history of that aspect. So the, the true Disney like
- 9:29quote UN quote sanctioned Disney pin trading starts with the
- 9:33Millennium celebration, right? It starts in 1999.
- 9:36If you all remember the fun little thing of the little magic
- 9:39wand over to Epcot ball, right? Lots of things.
- 9:43It was so cool. I have so many photos in front
- 9:45of that thing as a small child. It's unbelievable.
- 9:47I loved it. My mom loved.
- 9:48She took every angle and photo possible.
- 9:51We have at least three disposable cameras worth of just
- 9:54photos of the Epcot ball and I'm like, that fully checks out.
- 9:57That's where you get your. Life.
- 9:58And that explains so much. Yes, it does.
- 10:02Yes, it does. Go Debbie, go take those photos.
- 10:05Pass, pass that love of the Epcot ball onto your child.
- 10:08So so it starts in 99. There's some possibly apocryphal
- 10:16stories about what influenced it to start.
- 10:19Then there is a convention called the Odyssey of the Mind
- 10:22that takes place, I believe it's the previous year in Epcot, in
- 10:26which it's like an international, kind of like a
- 10:28Mensa situation, right? Like we're all kinds of smart
- 10:31people from all over the world come and they meet in Epcot and
- 10:34as a result they bring different badges from all over the world
- 10:37and they trade them with each other.
- 10:39So the story that gets referenced and then gets
- 10:41referenced again and then gets referenced again and no one can
- 10:44really find true origin is that this, you know, Odyssey of the
- 10:47Mind event took place. People saw them trading.
- 10:50But the other probable influence for this, and even probably
- 10:55influence this Odyssey of the Mind convention, is the trading
- 10:59of pins at the Olympic Village. I think this got a lot of
- 11:03attention the last Olympic Games too, but it's been around
- 11:07basically ever since like modern Olympics, like in the late 1800s
- 11:11when we could start making these like metal forged pins
- 11:14essentially. So at the Olympics, different
- 11:18countries send their delegates with pins representing their
- 11:22home country in some way, right? Sometimes it's just a flag,
- 11:25sometimes it's like a national animal, sometimes it's a full
- 11:27design. It very much depends like what
- 11:30the theme of that year is, right?
- 11:31Sometimes they'll get nationally recognized artists involved.
- 11:35It's a pretty big thing. And so there is trading as like
- 11:38a sign of cooperation and friendship at the Olympic Games
- 11:41between the delegates. And of course, like some are
- 11:44very sought after because there are some countries that don't
- 11:46have a lot of delegates that are sent a lot of athletes.
- 11:49So whatever it may be, but some of them are just cool designs,
- 11:52some of them are limited. So Olympic Games is like a very
- 11:56big hub for pin trading and sort of that's where it filters into
- 12:00like the cultural zeitgeist at large.
- 12:02So it's probably a combination of the 2 is what inspires the
- 12:05quote UN quote official Disney pin trading in 99.
- 12:08And then it catches like wildfire because everyone's
- 12:12like, I also want to trade official Disney pins and
- 12:15Disney's like, this seems like a great business opportunity, so.
- 12:19So what and how right they were? Oh yeah.
- 12:22The, the shameful amount, amount of money that we have spent on
- 12:26pins proves that that was a correct hypothesis.
- 12:30So within a year it travels over to Disneyland and then it's,
- 12:34it's at every Disney park across the the world.
- 12:37Now it is a huge part of Disney. I mean, Walt Disney World, I
- 12:40think is the, is the biggest one, right?
- 12:43That's where you'll see the most pin boards and it's the most
- 12:45trader friendly. But it is quite literally in
- 12:49every Disney park across the world you'll find people pin
- 12:51trading. Paris has a very big and like
- 12:55kind of culture and community. They do.
- 12:57I, I was actually very surprised.
- 12:59That pins are beautiful. They're, oh, my God, The pins,
- 13:01the Disneyland Paris pins. I encourage everybody, if you're
- 13:04listening to this in the car, please pull over and look this
- 13:07up. Use your phone while driving.
- 13:09I absolutely love the Disneyland Paris pins.
- 13:12They are beautiful. They're like small works of art
- 13:15on a pin. It's they're incredible, all of
- 13:17them. They have a couple of them.
- 13:19Yeah. And you'll hear us talk about
- 13:21this here in a little bit because we'll talk about kind of
- 13:23where in the parks to trade. But do keep in mind that some of
- 13:26the parks are a little bit more strict about the types of pins
- 13:30that they will allow for trades. So I just want to get that out
- 13:33of the gate kind of information upfront.
- 13:35Places like Disneyland Paris are very, very strict about what
- 13:39types of pins they will allow. So you will find their cast
- 13:42members are are holding some of that to a higher standard.
- 13:45You'll also find that currently in the year that we are
- 13:49recording this in 2025, they are considering this the 25th
- 13:53anniversary of pin trading. So the amount of boards that you
- 13:57can find across the parks has skyrocketed because of that.
- 14:01So you'll find so many more boards in Disney World and
- 14:04Disneyland especially for that reason.
- 14:06But yeah, definitely all of the parks and it does ebb and flow.
- 14:09Some of the parks do more trading than some of the other
- 14:11ones. So, but it is definitely, it
- 14:14does exist in all of the Disney parks across the world.
- 14:17Yeah, absolutely. And it also kind of depends on
- 14:19time of year. Like we've gone at various times
- 14:22of year and we've went to go look for a pin board that was
- 14:26there in, you know, late like during Jersey week in November.
- 14:30We, you know, we know it's always there.
- 14:32And then we went during, you know, spring or something and it
- 14:35just was never there, right. So like what's available kind of
- 14:38can fluctuate and. COVID also impacted it a lot,
- 14:41like it's of a while for it to kind of come back in full force
- 14:45after the pandemic, unfortunately.
- 14:46But now I think it is, you know, especially with the 25th
- 14:49anniversary, like it is back, but it took a while.
- 14:52Some of those pinboards in action for the We're So back,
- 14:56Baby. So duck tell us, how does the
- 15:01trading element of this work? So it is as simple as you see a
- 15:07pin that you like and you politely ask, would you like to
- 15:11trade, right? It is, it seems like I think a
- 15:14lot of people get daunted. You know, it's, it's a daunting
- 15:17prospect to just sort of like break out of that comfort zone
- 15:19and just ask somebody or cast member to trade.
- 15:22But it truly is as simple as that, right?
- 15:24You see something, you say, hey, would you like to trade?
- 15:27Would you like to see the pins I have available?
- 15:30And that's it. If you're trading with cast
- 15:33members, there are a ton. Like Jackie just said.
- 15:36There's boards that are set up. Some of them are like themed,
- 15:39like I think you were saying before.
- 15:40There's like some cute sea creature themed ones by Nemo.
- 15:42Yeah. My very first trade that I ever
- 15:45did in the parks, I was telling this story right before we
- 15:47hopped on, but I'm happy to tell it again.
- 15:50I it was super early in the morning at Animal Kingdom and I
- 15:53was taking the outside path to go from like the Everest area
- 15:57down towards what is currently the the remnants of Dinoland USA
- 16:02that are being changed over. But I walked by the Nemo
- 16:06building and the shows had not started for the day.
- 16:08But they had a line of cast members out and they all had
- 16:11little sea creature themed pinboards.
- 16:13So they just look like kind of like cork boards.
- 16:15If you're not familiar with them, a lot of them are Mickey
- 16:18Mouse head shaped. Some of them are other shapes.
- 16:21There's some that's and that's kind of the general thing you
- 16:24will find with pin boards. There's lots of other fun pin
- 16:27boards like in the Brown Derby restaurant at Hollywood Studios,
- 16:30you can find a a bowler hat that they do pin trading on.
- 16:34There are traffic cones out in some of the parking lots that
- 16:36you can do pin trading at, but generally speaking, it's a board
- 16:40of some kind. But these ones were, yeah, they
- 16:42were shaped like there was like a jellyfish and an octopus and
- 16:45some other sea creatures that they had pins on, which is super
- 16:49fun. When you see it, you're like, Oh
- 16:50my gosh, that's so cute. So yes, they definitely have
- 16:52some some themed ones out there that do exist.
- 16:55Yes, so and I love that. I I just think it's really fun.
- 16:58I think the bowler hat is really fun and branded, but yeah, so
- 17:02generally if you're trading with a cast member, you'll see it on
- 17:04a board or other adjacent substance.
- 17:07You'll just see the the pins stick, you know, just in the
- 17:11board itself. But also cast members have it's
- 17:14usually on their hip. It's usually just like a small
- 17:17like, you know, 5 by 5 piece of felt that they have a couple of
- 17:21pins, pins too. And those are available for
- 17:25trade. We actually have been told
- 17:27specifically by cast members that those pins get given to
- 17:31them for trade. They are not their personal
- 17:33collection. So you if you see a really good
- 17:36one, you do not have to feel bad.
- 17:38You are not like taking it from the the cast member.
- 17:40You are not like stealing their personal pin collection that is
- 17:43given to them by management for trade.
- 17:46So that is like all of that is 100% open and up for trading.
- 17:50So that covers where you'll find it trading with a cast member.
- 17:53But if you are trading with a fellow guest, there's a number
- 17:57of ways that people might choose to display the pins.
- 18:00Most commonly it's a lanyard, right?
- 18:02That's usually what we'll wear. We'll have a lanyard with a
- 18:04coat, you know, usually like 4 or 5 pins on it for what, where
- 18:08is available to trade. Some people will have like
- 18:12display backpacks. So they'll just have, you know,
- 18:15like a crossbody or something with like a clear window and
- 18:18some kind of little like foam piece in there that they've
- 18:21stuck their pins to. So sometimes those are just for
- 18:24display. Sometimes people actually want
- 18:26to trade those. So again, it's just as simple as
- 18:28like going up and asking politely, would you like to pin
- 18:30trade. There are also the other thing I
- 18:34want to note is that some parks have specific locations that are
- 18:39designated as pin trading locations, right?
- 18:42So while you may come across like a store that has a pin
- 18:45board, it may or may not be there, but what will generally
- 18:48always be there are these pin locations.
- 18:51So that includes in Epcot. It's it's like a little, it's
- 18:56like a little, I don't know what I call it a shack.
- 18:58It's like a little covered building between connections and
- 19:01club. Cool.
- 19:02Yeah, it's like the breezeway, the walkway through.
- 19:05So if you go past connections and you hang a left to go to
- 19:08that side, they've got all those like picnic table esque kind of
- 19:13tables outside and they will set up shop, especially if you're
- 19:16there on weekends, you will find people just those, all of those
- 19:20tables will be full and they've got just books and books and
- 19:24books of pins to trade. Yes.
- 19:26And actually what I was describing before with the
- 19:28Shack, that was when we went during COVID, they had relocated
- 19:31temporarily. There was it was like one of
- 19:33those pin trading little like outpost stores.
- 19:36That's what I was thinking of. You're right.
- 19:37You're right, yeah. Have since moved it back.
- 19:39Yeah, because they used to be towards the front of Epcot, but
- 19:42like within the last several months they relocated them
- 19:46because I think with it being the 25th anniversary pin trading
- 19:49again, this, you know, starting the, you know, really like the
- 19:52spring of this year has been super, super popular.
- 19:55So it was becoming a a walkway issue where they were meeting
- 20:00outside of one of the little gift shops underneath spaceship
- 20:03Earth. And it became an issue where
- 20:05they couldn't there was not enough walkway room.
- 20:08So Disney just politely asked them like, hey, you can let's
- 20:10relocate over here where the walkway is 4 times wider to give
- 20:15lots of lots of space for that. So yes, that's where you can
- 20:18find them. And it was funny.
- 20:20We were eating on my. My last trip when I went with my
- 20:23family around Memorial Day, we were eating inside of
- 20:25connections right on that side and we were like watching all of
- 20:29the pin traders through the big windows.
- 20:31I'm like watching everyone interact.
- 20:32My kids were like, I got his God out there.
- 20:35I know it's like, OK, we'll go look at them.
- 20:37Like cuz you're always also welcome to like just go take a
- 20:39look and see what people have, you know too.
- 20:42But they're like, we'll go look at them, but you got to eat
- 20:44first. That's a totally fair rule.
- 20:47Just has to say the same thing to me.
- 20:48I have. To react to.
- 20:49Eating for your Sinner first and say I.
- 20:52Drain. That's it.
- 20:54Then we can do pay takes. Three more bites and a simple
- 20:56water and then we can go pin trade.
- 20:58OK. Yes, OK.
- 21:01So true, so true. Oh goodness.
- 21:05For other pin trading spots, there is one in Hollywood
- 21:07studios. It is inside SIDS, it is at the
- 21:11entrance to the left. And there are other places
- 21:15again, like it kind of shifts. So if you're not sure, ask a
- 21:19cast member if there's like an official set up location or just
- 21:22look for the very excited people with pinfolios.
- 21:24Like it's very easy to spot where they usually are.
- 21:27And sometimes it's like an unofficial meet up, right?
- 21:29Like could just be locals getting together to pin trade.
- 21:32We saw that one time when and we were outside of Casey's, like we
- 21:34just had sat down to go, you know, grab some corn dog Nuggets
- 21:37or whatever and there just happened to be like a little
- 21:40local meet up of like, I don't know, it's probably like 10
- 21:43people. But pin trading, it was just
- 21:44like really fun and cool to see. There's like slightly before we
- 21:48were as obsessed with pin trading as we were.
- 21:51So like, you know, just just ask and keep your eyes peeled.
- 21:53You'll see plenty of people pin trading.
- 21:55Yeah. And that being said too, you can
- 21:57find a lot of, like I think Jess had mentioned earlier, like
- 22:00Facebook groups or different things for pin trading.
- 22:02So not only like local to wherever you are, but also like
- 22:05down in the parks too, you know. So keeping an eye out on those,
- 22:09if you were like wanting to find people to meet up with, keeping
- 22:12an eye on those Facebook groups is always a good idea.
- 22:15Absolutely. All right.
- 22:17So now that we kind of know how to pin trade, where do you get
- 22:20pins to trade? So you can purchase them
- 22:23directly from the Disney parks. There are pins in every single
- 22:27gift shop all over Disney property, So you can definitely
- 22:30buy them there. But there are other retailers
- 22:32that sell licensed pins. So I kind of mentioned it before
- 22:34Hot Topic box lunch places like Walmart.
- 22:38And then there are different types of pins within that.
- 22:42So Disney does sell like kind of pin trading starter kits that
- 22:45will usually come with a lanyard and then like 4 to 5 pins around
- 22:48like a different theme. So maybe it's like Princesses or
- 22:51Nightmare Before Christmas or Toy Story.
- 22:56Basically a lot of the more like popular collections of pins that
- 23:01people collect. So kind of a good way to get
- 23:03started and then have, you know, some pins to trade with cast
- 23:05members or with other guests. There are other retailers online
- 23:11that have good reputations that you can buy from.
- 23:13They'll sell, you know, pin bundles, but they'll also, you
- 23:17know, sell individual pins and different things like that.
- 23:20So Gopimpro is an example. We were talking about them
- 23:23before we started recording. They sell a lot of like
- 23:29collections of like pins and like the accessory boards for
- 23:32like $60.00. You get like 10 pins with the
- 23:34board. Be sure that the description
- 23:37though guarantees that it is authentic Disney pins.
- 23:41You can also go again to the local pin trading events like
- 23:43we've talked about. Pin traders are super friendly
- 23:47and they're always, you know, just looking to see people come
- 23:49into the hobby, you know, and get people started with
- 23:52collecting. So especially for like kiddos
- 23:54and stuff. Yeah, I know.
- 23:56I've given like a kid didn't have anything to trade me and I
- 23:59just gave him like 3 stitch pins because who cares, right?
- 24:01Like I would rather have a kiddo who would enjoy it and like be
- 24:05interested in the hobby then like what do I need?
- 24:07Another 3 pins? You know what I need?
- 24:10I'm far more interested. And I think this is the general
- 24:12attitude of most people in the Disney pin trading community,
- 24:15right? Like I think everyone's just
- 24:16more interested in people being happy and enjoying the hobby
- 24:20then like, you know, the perfect trade, right?
- 24:22Like I've even traded with people when like they really
- 24:25wanted something that I had and like, even if they didn't had
- 24:27some have something that I particularly wanted.
- 24:29I'm like, this clearly means something to you, right?
- 24:31Like maybe Tigger's your favorite Disney character or
- 24:34like you're trading it for your mom who couldn't come on this
- 24:37trip or like it reminds you of your dad who's past like
- 24:40whatever it is. Like I, I think my we and pretty
- 24:43much everybody in like the, the like trading community feels the
- 24:47same way of like, yeah, man, I'll trade you this pin.
- 24:49I don't care if you don't have anything that I want this looks,
- 24:51this means something to you and that means something to me.
- 24:54You know what I mean? Yeah, I had an instance where I
- 24:56was meeting up with a a friend at the kind of entrance area to,
- 25:00to animal Kingdom. And we were standing there
- 25:03chatting and her husband went, you know, over to look at at the
- 25:05pin board and came back and ran over.
- 25:08He's like, I need a pin. She was like, OK, so you know,
- 25:10she handed him one and he came back and he found the last of a
- 25:14set that their their son was looking to complete.
- 25:18And he had seen it. It was on the board.
- 25:20And he was like, I got to make sure that I go get it for him,
- 25:22you know? So those types of things.
- 25:24Now you will also find people that maybe don't think that way,
- 25:28unfortunately, you know, you're always going to have that too.
- 25:31So just be aware of those types of things as well and just keep
- 25:35an eye out. But yeah, I, I definitely think
- 25:37that, you know, the, the whole purpose is to enjoy the
- 25:41collection and enjoy the hunt a little bit, you know, So the
- 25:45more that you can kind of feed into that, I think that the
- 25:48better time you're going to have with with pin collecting as a
- 25:51whole. Or don't or don't feed into it.
- 25:53Because then he turned into me neurotically running around
- 25:56Epcot trying to finish that. There was a collection that was
- 25:59like all of the old school Epcot logos and those are like
- 26:03unfortunately very commonly faked.
- 26:05Not that I super care about that.
- 26:06I wound up with like 14 of the living with the land looking
- 26:09ones and they're like all fake and I do not care.
- 26:12I mean, look at one point. Completed that collection like 5
- 26:15times over. Give me them.
- 26:18All I keep trading in hopes that like I will eventually be able
- 26:21to have one full real election. I'm not quite there, but like I
- 26:26will get there eventually, right?
- 26:28That's going to happen. And and like, that's part of the
- 26:30fun of the hunt, right? Like we'll talk about scrappers
- 26:32and fake ones later and everybody feels differently
- 26:34about it. It doesn't particularly bother
- 26:36me. It's not the end all be all, but
- 26:38I can some people feel differently and that's OK.
- 26:40So 100% it is about the hunt and it is the the fun and the joy of
- 26:44finding like that collection complete or or.
- 26:47Whatever for sure. Yeah, Yeah.
- 26:50And while we're talking about kind of where to get Pinzac in
- 26:52our live chat here as we're recording, did ask about eBay.
- 26:56I think you, you're really some of those eBay whatnot, Mercari,
- 27:00any of those resale sites, you got to be really careful.
- 27:04Now, if you don't care whether it's authentic or not, you just
- 27:08like the design of the PIN like Duck was mentioning earlier, go
- 27:12for it if you think it's a good price, but you're really rolling
- 27:15the dice on even some of those, you know, live what, not sales
- 27:19and stuff. People may think that they have
- 27:21authentic pins and they're really not.
- 27:23Or people may just know that they're not authentic and just
- 27:26claim they are anyway, you know, again, the world is a crazy
- 27:29place. You never really know online.
- 27:33So in person events are really your best bet if you're looking
- 27:36to trade and buying things authentically in box and package
- 27:40from Disney is you know, or one of these other retailers that we
- 27:43mentioned is your best way to kind of get started.
- 27:46Yeah, I haven't. I have a note in here that's
- 27:48like never buy the 1000 pins for $3 because not a one of them are
- 27:52real, right. Like yeah, right.
- 27:53And if that does not bother you for your collection, that's OK,
- 27:56right? But it is.
- 27:58And we'll talk more about pin etiquette later, but it is not
- 28:01appropriate pin etiquette to knowingly buy a fake pin and to
- 28:06put it into circulation, right? If you don't care for your
- 28:09collection, that's totally cool. Like I have AI have a bunch of
- 28:11fake ones that I don't care about because they just sit on
- 28:13my pin board and it doesn't bother me.
- 28:15But I would never knowingly put back into circulation fake pins.
- 28:20And that's just like good collection etiquette at large,
- 28:24right? No matter what it is, if you
- 28:25know you have a fake, it's not the right great thing to do to
- 28:28put it back out in circulation. So please, please, please do not
- 28:31buy those like here's 50,000 Disney pins for $8, right?
- 28:35They're always a scan. They're not real.
- 28:37They're not real like it. And you're just going to get
- 28:40like a bad quality product and they're fake and that's not fair
- 28:44and put back out into the collection.
- 28:46So that's my soapbox moment for that.
- 28:48Yes. And again, we'll talk more about
- 28:49scrappers here in a minute, but where else, Jess, can we find
- 28:53the real pins that we want to actually have?
- 28:56The not fake ones, the not 1000 thousand. $15 Some other sites
- 29:01to find authentic tradable Disney pins would be Disney pins
- 29:06Blog. He has a quite the variety of
- 29:10pins. He even has like exclusive pins
- 29:12to like his shop that he's partnered with other, you know,
- 29:15to make. But he does, you know, have a
- 29:18variety of pins, sometimes older pins and then Disney pins for
- 29:20you is also another site. They run sales all the time, but
- 29:23they have a pretty wide variety of pins as well.
- 29:26So those are good places. We've purchased from both of
- 29:28them many times sometimes, yeah. So if you want FIFA pins
- 29:33especially I feel like Disney pins for you is good.
- 29:35If you want like to get a bunch to trade because they are pretty
- 29:38reasonably priced, but they all have that we have gotten have
- 29:41been authentic pins. I would.
- 29:43Recommend if you're looking for something that's older that's
- 29:48like you're a collection complete or maybe Disney pins
- 29:50blog is a good bet. And then if you're looking for
- 29:53like collection fillers, right, you're like, I don't really have
- 29:55anything of this character. I'm looking for something to
- 29:57trade Disney pins for you is good.
- 30:00And if you are looking Disney pins for you is also great for a
- 30:03database, right? Like I have a bunch of pins here
- 30:06that like I had gotten along the way.
- 30:08I purchased them, but I didn't know anything about them or like
- 30:11I got them off of a board and they have a great, great, great
- 30:15database. So they are super good for
- 30:17because even if they don't have it in stock, they have some
- 30:19information on it. So it's like a good place to
- 30:22find out more about your PIN, yeah.
- 30:24Yeah, that's helpful. And that's Disney pins the
- 30:27number four and the letter U. So all kind of 1, you know,
- 30:33screen name type one word all together.
- 30:35So Disney pins the number 4, the letter U and then Disney pins
- 30:38blog is just your normal normal spelling.
- 30:43Also want to shout out his YouTube channel if you're, like,
- 30:45looking to get into pins and pin trading.
- 30:47He posts like Disney pin news and about, like events and
- 30:50things like that that are happening in the park.
- 30:51So if you're like, looking to get into it but not really sure
- 30:54where to go, that's like a good starting point.
- 30:55He's got a lot of yeah. And we can definitely link,
- 30:59yeah, we can definitely link his YouTube in our show description.
- 31:02So if you're listening to this later to take a look at that, if
- 31:05you're like, oh, that sounds interesting or I want to take a
- 31:07look, I will be sure to put his his channel in our description.
- 31:11He also has a podcast. It's, it's like a fine just on
- 31:14top of the podcast for no reason at all as you're listening.
- 31:17I wonder why? Unrelated to the current
- 31:20activity, he has a podcast that he puts out couple days a week
- 31:24that's just like, it's just quick 5 minute news updates as
- 31:27soon as anything happens. Like he'll kind of concatenate a
- 31:30couple days worth of news together, you know, just sort of
- 31:33like release upcoming releases or pin news or something like
- 31:37that. So it's, it's he's, I totally
- 31:40second what Jess said. He's a great resource.
- 31:42I I really have enjoyed and appreciated his content over the
- 31:45years. Excellent, love that.
- 31:48And then the last note on where to get Disney pins is Disney
- 31:53Stores or Disney Outlets if you're lucky enough to still
- 31:55have one. I don't think there is a single
- 31:57Disney Store in the state of New Jersey anymore, but we all know
- 32:01Jackie has one out. There no, I'm very lucky and I I
- 32:05don't like to rub it in, but I am very lucky that I can't.
- 32:08And now I'm like I. Know I was just there today
- 32:13honestly, I went today because I wanted to see if they had any
- 32:16pins that I could like use for an example of like, hey, this is
- 32:18what my outlet has right now. I didn't they didn't have any
- 32:20great ones. They had some that were full
- 32:22price, but they didn't have any clearance pins.
- 32:24But I can find from from time to time and it it ebbs and flows
- 32:28because the, the stock of my Disney Store kind of comes in
- 32:32and out. There is one in Pennsylvania
- 32:35that's probably a few hours away from you where you guys are.
- 32:38But but like, I know I was able to find the the entire stitch
- 32:44eats collection that they did. So like this pin.
- 32:47This is an Angel pin where angel's holding a churro was a
- 32:51part of a set that I got on clearance there.
- 32:55So I got, I got both of my kiddos one of those sets to like
- 33:00help start their collecting and their trading as like, hey, I
- 33:05know these pins are cheap in in comparison and you may or may
- 33:11not want to keep them and that's totally fine.
- 33:13But like they're cheap pins that we know are authentic pins to
- 33:16get you started. My oldest traded away all of
- 33:20those. My youngest still has that Angel
- 33:21one on her little little pin set because she's like, no, I like
- 33:26this one. It's like, OK, that's totally
- 33:28fine. Feel free to keep it.
- 33:29But this is just this is what I could find that was on
- 33:32clearance. So it was a cheaper in to the to
- 33:36the Disney pin trading. Yeah, yeah, they will definitely
- 33:39get a lot of clearance pins. Sometimes like limited edition
- 33:43pins are like different collections that were released
- 33:45in the park. Those pins will kind of make
- 33:47their way to the outlet. So if you have one near you,
- 33:50definitely check there for like Jackie said, some good cheap
- 33:53pins. Yeah, so let's talk about
- 33:56carrying and transporting pins, because it's great if you have
- 34:01them at home, but what in the world are you supposed to do
- 34:03with them when you get to the parks if that's the OR to one of
- 34:06these events? Jackie, you hold them in your
- 34:08arms. What else would you do?
- 34:11How else could you possibly transport so many pins?
- 34:15Let me tell you because I have got.
- 34:17To say to learn. So the most common way that you
- 34:22will find that people like to display pins or have pins to
- 34:27trade are on lanyards. So that is again the most
- 34:31common. You'll see lots of people in the
- 34:33parks that have them. They can get a little heavy and
- 34:36a little bulky depending on how many pins you have on them.
- 34:40So keep that in mind. If you've got a kiddo that maybe
- 34:44only has six or seven, probably not a bad idea.
- 34:47If you get too many more than that, it becomes a little
- 34:50cumbersome for kiddos to have and to carry and like.
- 34:54The pins themselves are not super big, but when you get a
- 34:58couple of them and then you get a couple more and then you buy a
- 35:01couple more because they're cool, they get real heavy.
- 35:04Sometimes they are kind of big. I know our viewers, the
- 35:08listeners can't see it, but there is, it's a good like 2
- 35:12inch by two inch square of Mr. Potato Head that I have.
- 35:15And that was a, a mystery pin that we got in Toy Story Land a
- 35:19couple years ago. And like if you loaded up with
- 35:21enough of these, right? Like all it takes is three of
- 35:23these and suddenly it's very heavy, especially for a kiddo.
- 35:27Yes. So consider your kiddos
- 35:29tolerance to be able to hold that also like if it's really
- 35:31hot out, they may not want to have the lanyard stick into
- 35:34their neck as you're walking around.
- 35:36So just consider that. But there are some of these
- 35:39really great Pinfolio boards from gopinpro.com, not
- 35:45sponsored, just really like their products.
- 35:47They've they've got they've kind of they're kind of the go to
- 35:51when it comes to some of this. So what I'm holding here, if you
- 35:54can see me, is kind of like a foamy like board that they have
- 35:58where you can just stick the pins directly into it.
- 36:02And they've got a bunch of different sizes.
- 36:03They've got like tiny little 2 inch sizes.
- 36:05This one I think is like a 5 inch size maybe if I remember
- 36:09correctly, but they've got ones that are this size.
- 36:11They've got ones that are like full, you know, 8 by 10 size.
- 36:14They've got all sorts of different products on there, but
- 36:17these boards are really nice because they can slide into a
- 36:21park bag really easily and they even also have some of these
- 36:24that have like a like a clear plastic zip lock that'll go over
- 36:28top of it to protect them from weather, things like that.
- 36:32You can also find some of these that will slide into display
- 36:37bags, which is the next thing that I wanted to talk about
- 36:39because you can find a lot of those where they'll have like a
- 36:44clear front to it. I have this little tiny kind of
- 36:47wristlet one which if you can see what I'm talking about, it's
- 36:50just a little wristlet that's honestly a little bit even
- 36:54smaller than the the pin board that I was just showing you
- 36:56guys. But this is nice because this
- 36:58front little panel right here slides out of that clear
- 37:02plastic, which is really nice. So I will use this for like my
- 37:07traders whenever I go. I am not a huge pin person, but
- 37:10I've got just a handful that I usually try to go to the parks
- 37:15with typically just to look for things that my kids will like or
- 37:18look for. I'm very particular about what I
- 37:21what I collect and we'll talk about what that that is like
- 37:25should be more particular. But like they've got little
- 37:29wristlets, there are backpacks, there are cross shoulder, you
- 37:32know, bags, there are little Fanny pack style.
- 37:35There's all sorts of different bags depending on what your
- 37:38preference is. I do suggest if you're looking
- 37:41for a bag that you're going to be like carrying as your park
- 37:45bag, but also will serve as a pin bag to have one that has
- 37:48this kind of like plastic front to it.
- 37:52Because you will find, and Disney even has them that they
- 37:55market like little crossbody bags that don't have that.
- 37:59And it just worries me of like things falling off.
- 38:02You know, if you've got that clear plastic front, it's going
- 38:05to catch it if it does happen to come off or fall off.
- 38:08Now Disney does send like or does sell like locking pin backs
- 38:14and little packages and stuff that you can get to.
- 38:16If you're planning to like more permanently display things on
- 38:19like a Jean jacket or a bag or a lanyard or whatever kind of
- 38:24deal, they do sell those as well.
- 38:27But I would suggest having some sort of a cover just to help
- 38:30protect your pins and to mostly to keep them from like escaping
- 38:34and falling, falling apart and and and falling off never to be
- 38:37seen again. I can't tell you how many pins I
- 38:39found on the floor in the parks because they just fall off of
- 38:42lanyards or fall out of bags or out of pockets.
- 38:45Especially since Disney has gone from here.
- 38:49Let me show you an example to our our viewing audience and I
- 38:52will describe it to our listeners.
- 38:54So there are ones that have are sort of like the classic clasp
- 38:59ones, little butterfly, thank you, butterfly clasp.
- 39:02And so they are going to where like you have to kind of push in
- 39:07and then pull back to release it, right?
- 39:09So there's it's like a locking mechanism without being the full
- 39:12locking, right? Have gone to for a lot of these
- 39:15as I throw my pins all around. Is this exactly That's exactly
- 39:19right. The rubber stick back one.
- 39:21And that's good because it's like a tight fit.
- 39:24But if you have been like kind of pulling it on and off and
- 39:28whatever, or you stick it wrong, like a little bit weird.
- 39:31Snagging on something? Right, exactly.
- 39:33Or snagging on something like the Butterfly 1.
- 39:36Like you cannot pull it off without great force unless
- 39:40you're like pull like pushing on the closure.
- 39:42Specifically the plasticky one. The rubber one just falls right
- 39:47off. So agreed, if you are interested
- 39:50in keeping those pins long term, you care about them very deeply.
- 39:53Locking pin back is 100% the way to go.
- 39:56I got a lot of like 500 of them on Amazon years ago for like 20
- 40:00bucks. Yeah, I'm in the parks.
- 40:02They're. They're they're very
- 40:04inexpensive. If you're in a bind and you're
- 40:06in a bind, get up. But yeah, you, if you can plan
- 40:09ahead and order those ahead, that will save you.
- 40:11That'll save you a penny or two, yeah.
- 40:13And I can attest to the fact that they are fantastic because
- 40:16I have a Jean jacket that has pins that haven't come off of
- 40:19them in almost 10 years. So yes, locking backs are great
- 40:22for literal permanency. So yes.
- 40:25Yes, absolutely. So kind of going back to the pin
- 40:28bags, do keep in mind that some people like to keep their pin
- 40:32bags just as display for like, look how pretty my collection
- 40:36is. Look how cool it looks like, or
- 40:38like if they're bounding, like look at all these pins that I
- 40:40have that match my bound outfit that I'm doing today.
- 40:43And then they may carry like something else that has their
- 40:45traders on it. So just ask, like Duck mentioned
- 40:48earlier, you just got to ask like, hey, I see you've got a
- 40:51ton of pins. I would love to see what you
- 40:53have available to trade. And they may say, oh, anything
- 40:56you see here is available to trade or they may say, oh, let
- 40:58me grab my lanyard out or you know, those types of things.
- 41:01So again, you just got to ask. I apologize to the the the
- 41:05people that get social anxiety because I feel that.
- 41:08However, if you want to trade, you just got to ask.
- 41:13And again, people are generally nice about it.
- 41:16I've never had anybody that like bit my head off for at that
- 41:19right, People are may decline, right, because they could have
- 41:22it as like their collection on display or like maybe they're
- 41:25just like all traded out for the day and they have everything
- 41:27that they wanted. I've totally had people decline.
- 41:29You say, okay, no problem, enjoy the rest of your park day,
- 41:31right? Like it's like truly.
- 41:33But I know there's like some nefarious actors, right?
- 41:36As there is in any hobby. And not everybody is nice.
- 41:39But there does seem to be like a specific core around the type of
- 41:42people who are drawn to pin trading as an activity that
- 41:46generally they are on the kinder side.
- 41:49And even if they're not interested in engaging in that
- 41:51very moment, they will politely decline.
- 41:53So even if it is a little awkward for you to get into the
- 41:55habit of asking to pin trade, really it's it's it's good
- 41:59social practice for everyone out there who wigs out at social
- 42:02interacting like myself. And which I know may be shocking
- 42:06from how much I love talking on the spot fast, I am, I am an
- 42:10anxious, anxious human. But yeah, I know it's people are
- 42:14generally pretty kind surrounding accepting or
- 42:17declining pin trading. Yeah, and if you're really
- 42:20worried about it, then just stick to asking cast members.
- 42:23Yeah, Yeah. You know, because this won't
- 42:25decline, right? Yeah.
- 42:27I mean, like, like we mentioned, the pins that they have on them
- 42:30are likely given to them by management for trading or
- 42:33they're working at a location that has a pin board for
- 42:36trading. So that's your best bet.
- 42:38I will also say that, yeah, I I am also an anxious person when
- 42:42it comes to that kind of thing. But it is also a really great
- 42:45teachable moment for kids to kind of teach them some of that
- 42:49social interaction. Because in a day and age of
- 42:51screens in the Internet, you know, it's, it's a great thing
- 42:55to like, OK, we're going to walk up here.
- 42:57Ask them politely. May I please see your pins and
- 43:01then you can look and then when you're done, you need to say
- 43:03thank you so much for your time, you know, and then we can walk
- 43:07away. So just those little things,
- 43:08just my mom moment is it's very helpful because even my kids,
- 43:13you know, you get excited and they went to walk away and I was
- 43:15like, well, we'll stop, say thank you.
- 43:17Now we can walk away. Yeah, no.
- 43:21So especially with how much there there is constantly going
- 43:24on at the parks, right. Like it's a good moment to have
- 43:27kiddos or younger humans that are with you in general just
- 43:30take that moment to slow down and thank the people who are
- 43:33there making the magic. And, you know, thank, thank
- 43:36people for their kind interaction.
- 43:37So totally agree. And I think that makes complete
- 43:39sense. Yeah.
- 43:41Yeah. Absolutely.
- 43:42A couple other ways that you will find people carrying pins
- 43:45around. You will find people that have
- 43:47gigantic binders full of pins. They're not super convenient to
- 43:52carry around in the parks. So you'll find those allotted
- 43:55events or you'll find those a lot at those kind of designated
- 43:58pin trading locations. So like that Epcot location,
- 44:01people bring their binders in and they just flop them all out
- 44:04on the on the tables for people to look through.
- 44:07So it really just depends. But typically you're not going
- 44:10to see a ton of those big kind of cumbersome binders in the
- 44:13parks. But those are really good for
- 44:15like organizing your sets at home and kind of seeing what
- 44:18you've got or, you know, putting things by character or by by
- 44:22collection, those types of things for binders.
- 44:26And then you can also just throw them in your bag, put them in a
- 44:29zip lock. You know, you don't have to have
- 44:31something fancy to be able to pin trade.
- 44:33Like there's absolutely no rules when it comes to that.
- 44:36So whatever you've got that works is perfectly fine.
- 44:41And you may find people that that's what they do with their
- 44:44traders, right? So any pins that they're like,
- 44:46Yep, these ones are good to trade.
- 44:47I don't need to keep them. They'll throw them in a bag, zip
- 44:50lock them and, and throw them in their parks bag to make them
- 44:52super easily accessible. And it is always smart if you're
- 44:56someone who is collecting and also trading to kind of have
- 45:00those a little bit separate. So that way it's not confusing
- 45:03whenever you go to actually do trades or look at pinboards and
- 45:06things like that, it will help your brain remember what you're
- 45:10doing first of all. But it also will help anybody
- 45:13who's coming to look at your collection to trade.
- 45:16No, like, OK, these are all available as traders.
- 45:19So however you want to separate those, if it's a plastic bag, if
- 45:22it's a little, you know, pinfolio board or whatever you
- 45:25want to do with that, it is good to have those kind of separate
- 45:28in your stash of pins. And it's so funny when you say
- 45:33have because that's usually what we'll do.
- 45:35So I'll have, you know, we'll each have like a couple on a
- 45:36lanyard to like indicate that we're interested in trading.
- 45:40And then it's very funny when you reach into the park bag and
- 45:42you're like, I have a couple more and seeing especially a
- 45:45kiddos face light up, like I've never seen so many pins in one
- 45:50place. Like you can just see like the
- 45:52wiring like malfunction there for a second.
- 45:54It's it's a lot of fun. And also like, I don't know if
- 45:57somebody really wants the one that I have on my lanyard, of
- 46:00course, but like I also like giving people the the variety.
- 46:03So not mandatory by any means, but like you said, Jackie, good
- 46:07way to bring a lot of pins in at once without really having to
- 46:11worry about, you know, how am I going to display 40 pins on a
- 46:17lanyard? You know what I mean?
- 46:18How am I going to have all this plastic bag Totally sufficient?
- 46:21OK, so once we get our pins into the park and we figure out where
- 46:25we're going to trade, let's talk about some kind of etiquette
- 46:30rules suggestions from Mom St. when it comes to pin trading.
- 46:35So Disney does list on their website some official rules and
- 46:39they are also their common sense rules and they feed well into
- 46:42the etiquette conversation. So we're going to go through
- 46:44those and then if it has any sidebars come up, we'll talk
- 46:48through that too. So the first and rule, of
- 46:52course, as I said up top earlier, ask please, please,
- 46:57please, please just ask whether it's a cast member, whether it's
- 47:02a guest, whether it's on a board.
- 47:05Before you start reaching your little thingies out to grab the
- 47:08pin that you want, pretty please always ask, may I pin trade?
- 47:13Is that pin available for trade some some version thereof?
- 47:17Can I see your pins? Can I look at your pins?
- 47:20Yep. And that's one of those things
- 47:21that with your little littles, you're going to have to prompt
- 47:24them because especially if you've got, you know, little
- 47:27elementary age, even my kids, you know, being six and eight,
- 47:29it's like, no, we got to ask. We can't just go up and go, I
- 47:32want this one and snatch it. That's not how that works.
- 47:35First of all, body bubbles, space.
- 47:39Do not invade someone's space. Do not reach for their pins.
- 47:42Even if they say yes, they may hand it to you if it is on their
- 47:46person. Do not reach and grab.
- 47:49With lanyards and sensitive areas.
- 47:53Yeah, like, please don't like, cast members often carry the
- 47:56little felt things on their head, like belt Pickles.
- 47:59Yeah, they will like kind of pull it off and show it to you.
- 48:02Or they may like, present it right?
- 48:04Like there's going to be some sort of step that is taken.
- 48:07Do not body bubble. Perfect, perfect way to describe
- 48:10it. Do not invade somebody'd
- 48:11personal space. And even once you have decided
- 48:15which one you want, if it is on somebody's body, please use your
- 48:19words. I would love to trade you for
- 48:22that Mickey pin right there and they can present it to you.
- 48:26You can do a switcheroo. All is well in the world.
- 48:30Congratulations, you've been traded respectfully and I love
- 48:33that. OK, so I know we talked about
- 48:38this earlier and I just want to re emphasize it again.
- 48:41Please only trade official Disney pins.
- 48:44There are special cases that Disney outlines for like
- 48:47affiliate pins, right? If it's a company that Disney
- 48:50owns, like ESPNABC, something in that family that is also a OK to
- 48:55trade but must be an official pin, can't trade a scrap,
- 49:00unknowingly trade a scrapper and which we'll talk again about
- 49:04scrappers. And in just a second.
- 49:05I know we keep saying like teeing it up, like it's this big
- 49:08topic of conversation, but and also please understand that it
- 49:13is at the cast members discretion if you were trading
- 49:15on a board to decline the trade. I mean, it's also at at, you
- 49:19know, if you're doing peer-to-peer trading, But I'm
- 49:22really talking more about like the cast member focus trading
- 49:24for this. It is at their discretion if
- 49:26they sit, if they are going to decline it.
- 49:28Like we said, some parks have very high standards.
- 49:30Some parks do not. Sometimes cast member will just
- 49:33use their discretion and be like, it's a child.
- 49:34I'm not going to say no to them over the scrapper pen, right?
- 49:37Like they clearly want this Epcot pin or the stitch pin or
- 49:40whatever I'm I'll take it. But understand that it is up to
- 49:45them to be able to say yes or no, even if it's on the.
- 49:47Boards yeah and keep in mind too that things like Star Wars pins,
- 49:51Marvel pins, any of those umbrella companies, you'll find
- 49:55those pins all over the parks, incest and mystery packs for
- 49:58sale. So a good rule of thumb is if
- 50:01you're concerned about like, oh, this is a you know I've seen
- 50:04people talk about like lounge fly pins.
- 50:07Well, if it's a Disney lounge fly and it's branded Disney,
- 50:12then you're good to go. So, you know, you just keep an
- 50:15eye out for what's for sale in those different, you know, the
- 50:19different places. And if you see it, then you know
- 50:21that you're good to go. Exactly.
- 50:23And a good rule of thumb, especially for like those lounge
- 50:26fly pins for our video guests, our video folks, I have, I have
- 50:30a pin that I'm going to show you, but I'll just describe it
- 50:32for the audio folks. So I have a, it's a Tiana's
- 50:36Place pin. It is a lounge fly pin that I
- 50:39had gotten in a mystery box. I purchased it from box lunch.
- 50:43But when you flip it around, the thing that really matters to pay
- 50:47attention to is here on the bottom, it's not super clear.
- 50:50There we go. But you have that copyright
- 50:52symbol and Disney that is like going to be your best bet of is
- 50:56the something that I can trade in the park.
- 50:58If it has the copyright Disney on the back, you are generally
- 51:02good to go, right? Because it can be any of those
- 51:04properties. Like we said, it could be ESPN,
- 51:06it could be a Marvel, it could be a Star Wars, it could be one
- 51:09of the princesses. But it come from box launch
- 51:11right? Like, right, so this is AC3PO
- 51:14pen that we got. I mean, we bought it in a
- 51:15mystery pack at Disney. But if you look on the backside,
- 51:19it's really tiny. But it's got not only the Star
- 51:23Wars logo, but if you look right underneath, it's got that
- 51:26copyright Disney. So even though it's Star Wars
- 51:30and it's got the Star Wars name on it, it's still copyright
- 51:33Disney. And that's what you want to look
- 51:34for because not all Lounge fly, you know, Disney doesn't own
- 51:39Lounge Fly. Lounge Fly doesn't only work
- 51:41with Disney and they do have other pins that they put out
- 51:44that are not Disney affiliated. So you always going to make sure
- 51:48that even if it is a lounge fly pin or a Marvel pin or something
- 51:51like that, you want to make sure that it has that Disney on it.
- 51:54Yeah, 100%. That is like an easy, surefire
- 51:57way to be. Like, do I think this can be
- 51:59tradable? It's got the copyright Disney.
- 52:01I'm good to go Yes. So a couple other official,
- 52:05official rules for pin trading as Disney has put out.
- 52:09Please only trade 1 pin at a time.
- 52:11It can get really hectic when you're like, I know it's like
- 52:14super exciting and you're like, I don't want somebody to get
- 52:18this one pin that I need for my collection before somebody else
- 52:21can get it. But also I see a second one that
- 52:23I need, right? Like I totally understand
- 52:26there's a lot going on. If as an adult it's over
- 52:28stimulating, I can only imagine how exciting it is for children,
- 52:31right? Like there's a lot going on.
- 52:33So I think it is a good opportunity to remind both the
- 52:36small children in your care and yourself as an adult 1 pin at a
- 52:40time. It is largely for safety.
- 52:42We don't need anyone getting overly excited and, and poking
- 52:45themselves with it or anything like that.
- 52:46So please trade 1 pin at a time. Now as far as again, like on the
- 52:53topic of eligibility for trading, right, like we said, as
- 52:55long as it's official Disney, but also please make sure your
- 52:58pins are in good condition, right?
- 53:00If you wouldn't want to receive it, please don't put it on the
- 53:03board. You know it is again, just like
- 53:07a general etiquette, general rule of thumb, if you don't want
- 53:10it in your collection because it is messed up, it got run over by
- 53:14the tram in the parking lot, right?
- 53:16Like you don't want it? Then do not put it on the board
- 53:19for somebody else to unknowingly take.
- 53:22Yeah, especially you'll find some, there are quite a few pins
- 53:25out in circulation that have like moving parts, things that
- 53:28slide side to side or up and down.
- 53:31Any that's broken or doesn't function, you know, be a kind
- 53:34individual, be a kind human. Like Duck said, if you wouldn't
- 53:37want to receive it, don't offer it for a trade, right?
- 53:42There is by the official Disney rules, a limit of 2 pins per
- 53:48cast member slash board per day. Some days they are super strict
- 53:54about it, some days they are not.
- 53:56Again, it's kind of up to the discretion of the cast member
- 53:59and they are going to read the situation and who is
- 54:01participating in that trade to the best of their ability.
- 54:04You know, if it's something that like it's happened to me once,
- 54:06right? Like they happen to have, I
- 54:08think it was 3 pins, three of those Epcot pins that I needed
- 54:11and there was nobody else like in line, like I wasn't taking a
- 54:14trading opportunity from somebody and the cast member was
- 54:17generous enough to allow me to trade 1/3 pin from that board
- 54:20for the day, right? You know, there's very a lot of
- 54:23understanding, but again, it's up to the cast members
- 54:24discretion for how strictly they're going to enforce that
- 54:27rule. So Disney does have the blanket
- 54:29rule of 2 pins per individual cast member or per individual
- 54:33board per day. Yeah.
- 54:35And I think the thing to remember about that is it
- 54:37technically is per day. So like yes, the boards can
- 54:40change throughout the day and you may see other pins pop up.
- 54:44Just be respectful of those around you, be respectful of the
- 54:47cast members and just keep that in mind that that is the the
- 54:51rule that Disney governs their pin trading by.
- 54:54Right. And it's to give folks an
- 54:56opportunity, right? If you are spending all day
- 54:58hanging out in Cava and the Mexico Pavilion and they have a
- 55:02pin board, it's not very fair for you to be able to just,
- 55:04like, snipe all the Super cool pins off of that board when
- 55:07maybe there's a kiddo who's just passing through to go see, you
- 55:10know, hang out on three cabs for a little bit.
- 55:12And they only get to pass through once, right.
- 55:14So that's why that rule is enforced.
- 55:15It's just to make sure that everybody gets an equal and fair
- 55:18chance at the cool pins that can pop up throughout the day.
- 55:21Yeah, now this one may come as a shock to people, but you cannot
- 55:27exchange pins for monetary gain within the pin trading.
- 55:32Why? They not suck and well, see, it
- 55:35can get ugly real quick. I don't know if you've just
- 55:40noticed behavior recently, but once money gets involved it gets
- 55:44weird. This is technically for the
- 55:47officially sanctioned, like in park trading.
- 55:50They do not forbid second hand selling, right?
- 55:54So like those places that we mentioned, those marketplaces,
- 55:56Disney pins for you, Disney pins blog, even trusted sellers on
- 56:01things like eBay. Again, be very careful on those
- 56:03platforms. That is not forbidden.
- 56:06But if you are trading with a cast member, you can't be like,
- 56:09I'm going to give you this pin and you're going to give me a
- 56:12$20 Disney gift card, right? Like that is not a thing that
- 56:15Disney permits. So anything that's like a gift
- 56:18card, I'm going to trade you this pin for sunglasses, a
- 56:22voucher of any kind. I've seen somebody try to get
- 56:26bribe their way into a lightning lane before with pins.
- 56:30Like I've seen some unruly behavior.
- 56:33So no, there is nothing to gain from pin trading except for
- 56:38another pin. That is the official Disney
- 56:40stance on that. Now also, I will just insert
- 56:43this in here because there's lots of conversation on the
- 56:47Internet about resellers. Do keep in mind that if you are
- 56:50someone that is planning to purchase pins to resell, again
- 56:56Disney does not have specifics on that.
- 56:59However, they do have specifics on using your annual pass
- 57:05discount or any other discount to get a pin and then turn
- 57:11around and sell it for profit. That is not allowed.
- 57:15Disney will not let you profit off of their name and off of
- 57:19their merchandise. So keep that in mind.
- 57:23You know, there's something to be said for, oh, I collected
- 57:26this collection. I never finished it.
- 57:28I'm not interested in in hanging on to it anymore or I'm going to
- 57:32go get this limited edition pin, pay for it with my AP discount,
- 57:36and then mark up the price to make money off of it.
- 57:39Big difference between the two. So just for those listening,
- 57:45keep that in mind. I'm going to keep my comments
- 57:49about flippers to myself. Yep, as a same and if.
- 57:52A great number of collecting hobbies.
- 57:55I have thoughts and feelings and I completely agree.
- 57:57There's a large distinction between this is just an item
- 58:00that I don't want anymore or I bought it and it kind of doesn't
- 58:03fit into my collection and I'm just going to sell it at like,
- 58:06you know, a reasonable amount. I just want my, I just want my
- 58:09what I paid back or what I paid plus $5 for gas or, you know, I
- 58:14want to cover Churro with it, right?
- 58:15There's a difference between that and I camped here for 48
- 58:19hours and punched Mickey Mouse in the face to be able to get
- 58:22this pin, right? Like huge difference between
- 58:25those two situations. And that's my thoughts on that.
- 58:28Yes. Which?
- 58:30Actually brings us pretty good into our next point, which is
- 58:34it's not an official Disney rule, but please be a good pin
- 58:38trading citizen, right? Except when somebody declines, a
- 58:42cast member man declined to trade for whatever reason,
- 58:45right? Maybe they're just like
- 58:46sprinting to go handle their situation.
- 58:49They cannot stop at that very moment and may decline.
- 58:52Maybe they see that you have a pin that is not within the
- 58:55confines of what is acceptable for a trade while on property.
- 58:59Maybe people don't want to part with their pins.
- 59:01All of that is OK right? Like truly just use like common
- 59:05sense good human interactions when entering into this.
- 59:09Like pin trading agreement for lack of a better term.
- 59:13Yeah, if someone says no, that's a full sentence.
- 59:17So we're sad. Listen to them.
- 59:20You know, if they say I'm not interested or, you know, if you
- 59:23both have to see each other's pins and you find something and
- 59:26they're like, you don't really have anything I want, I'm so
- 59:28sorry, you know. OK, no problem.
- 59:30Thanks for thanks for checking out.
- 59:32And that's exactly right. Go on your merry way.
- 59:35That's it, you say have a great park day and then you just
- 59:38continue on and get yourself a churro, right?
- 59:40Like that is, we just move on and.
- 59:43They do not owe you a trade if that's not how the world works.
- 59:47So keep that in mind. And you need to prompt your kids
- 59:51for that too. Your kids need to understand
- 59:53that they're they are likely going to be trading with
- 59:57potentially with other kids, but likely with grown-ups who have
- 59:59invested a lot of money into this, especially if they're just
- 1:00:02starting. That was a conversation I had
- 1:00:03with my kids, like hey, as as that looks at their their
- 1:00:08collections behind them. But slowly moving the pins off
- 1:00:11the table. Who spends a lot of money?
- 1:00:13Not me. But that was a conversation I
- 1:00:16had with my kiddos like hey, first of all, it's OK to not see
- 1:00:19something that you want. Even if you're looking at
- 1:00:21boards, that from the, the, the cast members are looking at
- 1:00:24lanyards, like, Hey, can I see your pins doesn't mean you're,
- 1:00:27you're locked into a trade. And the same way that if someone
- 1:00:31asks to see yours and you say yes, doesn't mean you're locked
- 1:00:33into a trade. And that's a conversation that
- 1:00:35you, you need to have because that is just the way that the
- 1:00:37world of, of pin trading works when it comes to, to
- 1:00:41collectibles. So kind of prompting your kiddos
- 1:00:43and, and remembering yourself that like, just because we're
- 1:00:46checking each other's stuff out, doesn't mean that we're, we're
- 1:00:49locked into a trade 100% All right.
- 1:00:54So I think that gives us a good basis on the etiquette and the
- 1:01:00rules. Again, be a kind person, be a
- 1:01:02kind human. But let's talk about the
- 1:01:07scrappers because we've been, we've been hinting at it this
- 1:01:11whole time. Let's talk about scrapper pins,
- 1:01:15what that means, What are we looking for?
- 1:01:17Just help us out. Will do so the term scrapper
- 1:01:21came about because the first kind of legitimate like scrapper
- 1:01:26pins as they were that started entering the pin trading sphere
- 1:01:30were literally pins that were like scrapped from the official
- 1:01:33factories that were making the pins.
- 1:01:35So essentially they didn't pass the quality control and they
- 1:01:38were put off to the side to be discarded, melted down into
- 1:01:41other pins, what have you. But that didn't happen with
- 1:01:44these and they were kind of backdoor out of the factory and.
- 1:01:51It was Mission Impossible, but with.
- 1:01:53Ping. I just said it was that
- 1:01:54dramatic. But I mean, maybe Tom Cruise up
- 1:01:56a bit from the ceiling. I.
- 1:01:57Don't you never know you weren't there?
- 1:02:00Jess, that is true. I was there and you never know
- 1:02:02what Tom Cruise is doing so. At any.
- 1:02:05At any. Given moment, that man is up to
- 1:02:07something. I just know it, yeah.
- 1:02:09So, yeah, so those things did not get thrown out or recycled
- 1:02:12as they were supposed to. And then they typically end up
- 1:02:15online on eBay in large lots like Duck said, where they're
- 1:02:19selling them for like 1000 pins for like $3.
- 1:02:23And people kind of unknowingly purchase these pins is I think
- 1:02:29really how it initially started. They did just didn't realize
- 1:02:31what it was, got a bunch of these pins, started trading them
- 1:02:33around in the parks and then now they are just kind of in
- 1:02:37circulation in the parks. It's honestly, if you're going
- 1:02:40to go in and trade on cast member boards, lanyards, what
- 1:02:43have you, it is like just something to kind of expect that
- 1:02:46you might most likely get a fake pin because they have kind of
- 1:02:50very widely been circulated and that is a lot of what is in the
- 1:02:54parks. Let's be clear, you will end up
- 1:02:56with a fake right at some point in is trading endeavor.
- 1:02:59Is what it is. There is there are so many out
- 1:03:01there. They continue to make them
- 1:03:03right. It's not like it was a select
- 1:03:04lot and then we fixed it. Just we'll talk more about it.
- 1:03:06But like this just simply is a fact of the collecting hobby.
- 1:03:10It is. Yeah, and it's been a thing in
- 1:03:13pin collecting for so long. And the people that start in the
- 1:03:16pin collecting don't realize that that's even a thing until
- 1:03:20they're too far into it. So there's it's, it's really
- 1:03:23hard to kind of get ahead of the ball on that one.
- 1:03:27Right. Yeah.
- 1:03:28So and then, you know, from there, some of the molds to make
- 1:03:33the pins actually ended up getting stolen or copied.
- 1:03:36And then people started producing cheaper, lower quality
- 1:03:40pins that were replicas of the exact pins that were being sold
- 1:03:44in the parks or limited edition pins and things like that.
- 1:03:47This happens a lot with the Hidden Mickey Pass, so that the
- 1:03:51that series, which is exactly what it sounds like, right?
- 1:03:54It's like a character and then somewhere on that little pin of
- 1:03:57the character, there's a little Mickey somewhere on there.
- 1:03:59I'm trying to see if I have one right in front of me.
- 1:04:01I don't know if I can do to show our visual audience.
- 1:04:04Perfect. That's exactly right.
- 1:04:06Yeah. Oh yeah.
- 1:04:07And the Scrapper and it is. And we'll talk about yes, and
- 1:04:10we'll talk about more, but that is the series for the visual
- 1:04:12folks. The little tiny silver Mickey
- 1:04:15head on it. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:04:18And so for our audio only folks, that's exactly right.
- 1:04:20Somewhere in the pins design, there's just a tiny little
- 1:04:24silver or usually they're silver or red like some some way to
- 1:04:27stand out just a little Mickey head, right.
- 1:04:29Like it's just a fun little little cute thing.
- 1:04:32But Disney mass produced them and then seemingly like lost
- 1:04:36control of the factory. And.
- 1:04:38Then the molds got stolen. They get stolen for almost all
- 1:04:41of these and they are the most commonly faked series of pins
- 1:04:46and they continue to be made. It's still a series that Disney
- 1:04:49sells. They'll like switch up the
- 1:04:51characters that are available. They are like also on the
- 1:04:54cheaper end of Disney pins themselves.
- 1:04:57So they just end up all over the place and it's just a very
- 1:05:01easily faked series of pins. So how do we spot a scrapper
- 1:05:06pin? How do I know that my pin is
- 1:05:08fake? Sometimes it is really hard to
- 1:05:10determine if the pin is a scrapper or if it's just kind of
- 1:05:13a low quality pin that somehow made it for the quality
- 1:05:17controls. We have literally purchased pins
- 1:05:20from the parks that look like they would have been like, pull
- 1:05:24them out of a mystery box and it looks like a fake pin.
- 1:05:27There are imperfections in the enamel design.
- 1:05:31There are, you know, issues with the Mickey waffling on the back,
- 1:05:35the Mickey waffling. It's like the little Mickey
- 1:05:37heads that are on the backs of the pins.
- 1:05:39That is the most common nowadays for pins that are being sold in
- 1:05:44the parks. But some older pins didn't have
- 1:05:46that. They didn't introduce that until
- 1:05:48a few years ago. So there's still pins that are
- 1:05:51official that don't have that. A lot of these scrapper pins do
- 1:05:54have the copyright Disney on the back, especially the ones that
- 1:05:57are made from the molds of, you know, that were kind of stolen
- 1:06:00from factories, right? So a lot of them do have aspects
- 1:06:03that can seem a little bit legit, but some pretty good
- 1:06:07indicators and signs that the pin that you have is a scrapper
- 1:06:12is if it's made of a thinner kind of poor quality metal than
- 1:06:15the official pins. So typically the official Disney
- 1:06:19pins will be like a super thick, super like sturdy, you know,
- 1:06:24metal material. Something else to look for is
- 1:06:28having the unclear writing or make you waffle patterns on the
- 1:06:32back. I wish there was good a good
- 1:06:35example of this but Or do you have an example of the Mickey
- 1:06:38waffling? Yeah, so I do have an example of
- 1:06:40the Mickey waffling. So again, sorry for our visual
- 1:06:42folks, but as we were describing earlier, the Mickey Mickey
- 1:06:45waffling is a stamping of a Mickey pattern on the back of
- 1:06:50the pins. And here I have one.
- 1:06:52Don't I have one of the legit. You could just open that one.
- 1:06:54Oh yeah, the you're good. So this is one that we're fairly
- 1:07:00sure is a scrapper. You can, it's really hard to see
- 1:07:03visually. And for folks who are listening
- 1:07:05or even like doing video you, it's a good call for you to go
- 1:07:10look up photos because there's bajillions of them on the
- 1:07:12Internet and they're very clear at pointing out what is and is
- 1:07:17not good waffling and good edging and good coloring for
- 1:07:22these pins. So we're describing them to you
- 1:07:24here. And if you can see the video,
- 1:07:26we're going to show you as best as we can.
- 1:07:27But truly, like, there are some fantastic resources out there in
- 1:07:31regards to helping you identify scrapper pins.
- 1:07:33So this is a good example of a real pin.
- 1:07:35So this is a Halloween pin from a couple years ago with stitch
- 1:07:38or mochi dressed up as stitch. On the back there is the
- 1:07:43waffling pattern. Everything is evenly spaced.
- 1:07:47The writing is all neat, evenly spaced.
- 1:07:50It might be tiny, but it is still legible.
- 1:07:53A lot of the times it'll be very hard to read these pins on the
- 1:07:56back to see the dates, the names.
- 1:07:57Things might be spelled wrong or like the letters might be very
- 1:08:02far, like spaced out on the backs of these pins that are
- 1:08:06fake. So those are just kind of some
- 1:08:08telltale things to look for on the backs of the pins, on the
- 1:08:11front of the pins. The enamel, most official Disney
- 1:08:14pins, there are a few exceptions to this, but most of them are
- 1:08:17made with this kind of harder enamel.
- 1:08:20So it has kind of like a matte finish to it.
- 1:08:23But then when you have a scrapper pin, a lot of those are
- 1:08:26made with a softer enamel. So sometimes you'll see little
- 1:08:28like divots in it or a little like bubbling on the top.
- 1:08:34So that's kind of a good way to tell if it has that like shinier
- 1:08:37finish to it too. You can kind of see as the thing
- 1:08:41if you can see the pin. The one that I, yeah, the one
- 1:08:44that I've got is a a mermaid pen, but you can see if I can
- 1:08:49catch the light, you can tell how kind of shiny that is on the
- 1:08:53front. This one also, you can really
- 1:08:55feel the the ridges. And I know that's something that
- 1:08:58we'll talk about here, but like this one is very much clearly a
- 1:09:02scrapper. But again, my daughter was like,
- 1:09:04oh, that's one of Ariel's sisters.
- 1:09:06I want that pin. Cool kid, go for it.
- 1:09:08And that's what matters, right? Like this pin that I was showing
- 1:09:10you as an example is an Epcot pin.
- 1:09:13And there was just no way I wasn't going to have it in my
- 1:09:15collection. Like, I do not care if it's
- 1:09:17fake, right? Like it's not fake in the sense
- 1:09:20that it's not a real object for you to add to the collection,
- 1:09:23right? Like I completely understand and
- 1:09:26respect pin traders who have a hard line stance of I do not
- 1:09:30want scrappers in my collection. That is totally cool.
- 1:09:32That is how you choose to collect and that is 100%
- 1:09:35acceptable. I choose to collect the designs
- 1:09:38that I like and as in my opinion for my collection, as long as
- 1:09:42I'm not purchasing it and directly supporting the people
- 1:09:45who have stolen these molds or who are faking it, like I'm not
- 1:09:49directly contributing to that economy.
- 1:09:52I just picked this off of a pin board because I liked the design
- 1:09:55and it's going to stay in my collection, right?
- 1:09:57I'm not going to put this back out into the world.
- 1:09:59So an unsuspecting kid or even an unsuspecting adult who's new
- 1:10:02to the pin trading world is going to end up with this.
- 1:10:04This stays with me on my pin board at home and that's like my
- 1:10:08comfort zone or trading so. Sometimes what I'll do if I end
- 1:10:12up with a pin that is probably a scrapper, but not something that
- 1:10:16I want in my collection anymore. If I'm doing like an online
- 1:10:19trade with somebody, I'll like throw it in there as like a
- 1:10:20little extra and write a note like probably fake.
- 1:10:22But if it's with, you know, what you have or your collection or
- 1:10:25what you were looking for. So, like, my gift to you, here
- 1:10:28you go. Yeah.
- 1:10:29And then, you know, they know it's not a real pin.
- 1:10:31It's not something that they can go back and trade.
- 1:10:33But it's just something a little extra thought of you.
- 1:10:36You know, this reminded me of your collection.
- 1:10:37So I thought it, you know, might have a better home with you.
- 1:10:39Yeah, absolutely. And we used to sell a lot of
- 1:10:43stuff on eBay, right, like just like, you know, pops and stuff
- 1:10:46like that, not flipper stuff. Let me be clear, we don't do
- 1:10:49flipping. That's not our vibe here, right?
- 1:10:51So it was just a lot of stuff that like we had amassed over
- 1:10:54the years and like truly when we were moving, like I we just
- 1:10:57could not fit everything into a condo that we each individually
- 1:11:01fit in our parents whole houses, right?
- 1:11:03Like it was not happening. So a lot of like, as we were
- 1:11:05downsizing the collections, like we also did that with pins like,
- 1:11:09you know, we would sell like, I don't know, like ABBA Funko Pop
- 1:11:14for $5 on eBay. And I'd throw a scrapper pin in
- 1:11:17there too, right? Because like, whatever, like
- 1:11:19it's ABB 8 pin, like, it doesn't matter, you know, enjoy it.
- 1:11:21It's just something extra and it's something that you clearly
- 1:11:24like, right. So in the same vein, like, I
- 1:11:26think that's a really good suggestion for uses for scrapper
- 1:11:29pins. Yeah.
- 1:11:32And also one other suggestion is that it goes really great to
- 1:11:36have them and if you are have children that are of age to be
- 1:11:39trusted with slightly pointy objects, let me put that
- 1:11:42disclaimer there. It put them in like goodie bags
- 1:11:44for birthday parties and stuff like those are always a big hit.
- 1:11:48So those are there are places, times and places for you to give
- 1:11:51out those pins, just maybe not an official Disney trade Disney
- 1:11:54pin trading capacity. Some people are crafty, kind of
- 1:11:57use them as like, embellishments on crafts.
- 1:11:59So yeah, I've seen that there's like, tutorials online where
- 1:12:02people use, you know, their scrapper pins for different
- 1:12:04things. So like there's all kinds of
- 1:12:06ways to use them and get them out of circulation in the parks,
- 1:12:08but also still get to enjoy them and appreciate them, you know,
- 1:12:12for having the fun characters that you enjoy on them.
- 1:12:16If you are, you know, kind of unsure, I think Duck kind of
- 1:12:18touched on this before. If a pin is fake or not, you can
- 1:12:21always Google it. There are definitely like the
- 1:12:23hidden Mickeys pins that are very commonly faked.
- 1:12:26So it is kind of easy to tell from a quick Google search.
- 1:12:29If you know there's a high probability of this pin being
- 1:12:31faked. People will say what to look out
- 1:12:33for. Sometimes there are certain pins
- 1:12:34that have a very specific thing to look for.
- 1:12:37Like there was a collection of limited edition pins.
- 1:12:40Those pins aren't as widely traded in the parks, but
- 1:12:42sometimes in like the Facebook groups are at events, the
- 1:12:45windows of magic pins. So these were the Disney
- 1:12:48princesses on like a stained glass window kind of design.
- 1:12:53And they were very popular, very sought after pins.
- 1:12:56They are making similar window series even to this day, and
- 1:12:59they're still very popular, so they were very widely faked.
- 1:13:02The. Villains ones were the best.
- 1:13:03That's my the Horned King one went so hard anyway.
- 1:13:07I have attractions ones this year, and I can't get my hands
- 1:13:10on them to save my life because they're so popular.
- 1:13:11But the Windows of Magic were, and the Windows of Evil runs
- 1:13:14too. They were all very widely faked.
- 1:13:16And the way to kind of tell if they were real was counting the
- 1:13:18Mickey heads across the back of the pin.
- 1:13:20So if there was a certain number, you knew it was real.
- 1:13:23If there was any more or any less, you knew that that was a
- 1:13:25scrapper version of the pin. So like some pins have things
- 1:13:28like that that are very specific.
- 1:13:29A Google search will tell there are a lot of you know, people on
- 1:13:32YouTube that do you know, in depth videos about how to spot
- 1:13:36scrappers and things like that. So just things to be aware of
- 1:13:39when you're going on your trip to the parks or trading at an
- 1:13:41event. Again, most people, you know, at
- 1:13:44events and stuff know not to put those pens that they know are
- 1:13:47scrappers into their traders. But like we also said, there are
- 1:13:51some people who are not always the best actors in these
- 1:13:53situations. So know what to look for, know
- 1:13:56what your kind of stance is. If you really like a pin enough,
- 1:13:59is it worth overlooking that it might be fake like ducks?
- 1:14:02Epcot pin here, you know, or are you, you know, very set on Nope,
- 1:14:07I want only, you know, authentic Disney pins in my collection.
- 1:14:11But it is something to just kind of expect when you're in the
- 1:14:13parks nowadays. Well, and a couple different
- 1:14:16things with that too. There are Facebook groups that
- 1:14:18exist. Whether or not you want to go
- 1:14:20down the rabbit hole of asking a Facebook group if your pin is
- 1:14:22real or not, that is your discretion.
- 1:14:25Some groups are nicer than others, yeah.
- 1:14:29So just keep that in mind. A really good bet if you're
- 1:14:32someone that's starting and you find one of these in person
- 1:14:34events is to take some pins there and ask the people there.
- 1:14:39And you know, like, like we mentioned, when people go to
- 1:14:41those events, they're typically really nice people.
- 1:14:43And they're like, if you go into it saying like, Hey, I'm new to
- 1:14:46this. Can you help me look at these
- 1:14:48pins and tell me what I have? Like, you know, I, I got these
- 1:14:52from a trusted site. I just want to double check or
- 1:14:55can you inform me or like, I know this is a scrapper.
- 1:14:58Can you help me figure out like, you know, show me what I need to
- 1:15:00know about it. You know, those types of things.
- 1:15:03Again, you never know, you may run into someone who doesn't
- 1:15:07want to take the time to help you, but chances are good,
- 1:15:09especially those in person events that you're going to be
- 1:15:11able to find someone that is willing to help.
- 1:15:15Look at pins with you to to make sure that you you you know what
- 1:15:19what to look for and what you what you have or what you don't
- 1:15:22have. Yeah, especially, like you said,
- 1:15:24those local ones. I mean, it's just the people who
- 1:15:27are bothering to put on a local pin trading event in New Jersey
- 1:15:33or Canada or you know what I mean?
- 1:15:35I see them. I saw one in North Dakota.
- 1:15:37Right. Like if you are taking the time
- 1:15:39to put this on, this is clearly your passion.
- 1:15:42And generally you're going to find people who want to help
- 1:15:44you, right? I mean, it's it's of course
- 1:15:48there's always bad apples, but far and away, if you are
- 1:15:51bothering to rent out a room in a Marriott in New Jersey in the
- 1:15:55dead of winter to trade Disney pins, you probably really care
- 1:15:59about the community. Yes, also very true.
- 1:16:02Also, I will just plug very briefly.
- 1:16:04You guys know that we are part of our good friend Kirk at
- 1:16:06Walrus Karp, his discord that is a great community that you can
- 1:16:10help, you know, that can help teach you about pins.
- 1:16:13We've got lots of people in that community, Duck and Chess
- 1:16:16included, that are on that Discord that can help you.
- 1:16:19So if you're like not sure where to go, but you need online help,
- 1:16:23come to our Discord and let us help you.
- 1:16:25We are a very inclusive kind of friendly community over there.
- 1:16:29So if you need help with that, that is a definitely a good
- 1:16:32place to go for for help with. If you want to post photos of
- 1:16:36pins that you got or are are curious about, we can help you
- 1:16:39out over there. I just want to see your
- 1:16:42collection. Sure.
- 1:16:44Sure, your pin collection with me.
- 1:16:47We want to see all of the. Pictures.
- 1:16:50Yes. Yes.
- 1:16:52Perfect pictures and pin pictures.
- 1:16:53That's what I want. Pets and pins.
- 1:16:55I feel like you should start like a new like Instagram page
- 1:16:58that's just photos of your dog Ruby and photos of your pin
- 1:17:04collection. Literally just saying, do you?
- 1:17:06Agree with me the same collection.
- 1:17:09That dog would somehow melt them down and make a knife.
- 1:17:12God love her, she is crafty OK? So I love that.
- 1:17:17That's OK. Anyway, back on track.
- 1:17:19But yes, ultimately, you know, you have to side if the pin is
- 1:17:22worth it or not. And if you've got kiddos that
- 1:17:25are trading, you do need to kind of coach them on that too,
- 1:17:28because they may willingly trade for a really cool character.
- 1:17:33But you have to also help them understand that like, hey, this
- 1:17:36one is now permanently in our collection.
- 1:17:38We're not going to trade it back on the on the boards.
- 1:17:40We're not going to put it back out there for someone else to
- 1:17:43get. We know that it is not an
- 1:17:44authentic quote UN quote pin, but you really like this
- 1:17:48character and that is great. So let's go put it on your
- 1:17:50keeper board and that's where it's going to live forever.
- 1:17:54So that is a conversation that you probably need to coach your
- 1:17:57kids through 'cause I was something that I had to talk to
- 1:17:59my kiddos about to was like, hey, this is a really cool pin.
- 1:18:03But after we walk away, OK, this is not an authentic pin.
- 1:18:05So this one is is one that goes on our keep pile and they were
- 1:18:08like, OK, sure mom, whatever. It helps that kiddos generally
- 1:18:13trade for characters that they really want anyway.
- 1:18:16So yeah, I think, I think that can ease the conversation of,
- 1:18:20OK, this is yours forever child. Forever and ever.
- 1:18:27OK, so let's talk about building that collection and what that
- 1:18:30looks like and kind of some of our suggestions and advice for
- 1:18:35how to build your collection. The the first thing, and you've
- 1:18:39heard us already kind of allude to this on today's episode, is
- 1:18:44rule #1 collect what you love, right?
- 1:18:46So that's what pin trading is all about at the end of the day,
- 1:18:49is collecting the characters or the themes or the movies, the
- 1:18:53icons, the attractions, whatever it is that you love.
- 1:18:58What I do because I'm fairly new to pin trading and I'm not
- 1:19:01looking to, you know, collect entire giant mass amounts of
- 1:19:06pins because they're expensive and I don't have space for them.
- 1:19:12Has duck and chess both. Look at me like, all right, OK.
- 1:19:18Try not feel tack. No, it's OK, but like probably
- 1:19:21the correct stance to be taking. Yes, because otherwise I'm not
- 1:19:24allowed. If I were to just say I'm going
- 1:19:27to collect pins, I think my husband would would not be happy
- 1:19:32about that. So what I do is I focus on like
- 1:19:38specific characters or specific niche or a a movie or whatever.
- 1:19:42So like for me is Stitch because Stitch is one of my all time
- 1:19:45favorite characters and then like Winnie the Pooh is one of
- 1:19:49my like secondary ones that I will look for.
- 1:19:52I do also look for Duffy and friends because I love Duffy and
- 1:19:55friends. Peep the Shelly Mae ears that
- 1:19:57I'm wearing in today's episode. So those are kind of my my lane
- 1:20:03that I stay in. However, I will trade for fun
- 1:20:06friends. Like this is my chubby pin that
- 1:20:08I traded for. It was my very first.
- 1:20:11Pin trade that I made, and Chubby is just a character that
- 1:20:15I love. And this is the only pin that
- 1:20:17Chubby exists on as of right now.
- 1:20:20And for those of you who don't know, Chubby is the little
- 1:20:22orange bird at the end of the Mickey and Minnie's Runaway
- 1:20:25Railway attraction at Hollywood Studios and over in Toontown at
- 1:20:28Disneyland. And I just think he's super fun
- 1:20:31and he's a super original character to the parks, which I
- 1:20:33think is fun. So that was one that I was like,
- 1:20:36yes, this one's coming home with me.
- 1:20:38But generally speaking, I try to keep it niche just so I don't
- 1:20:42end up with with with an overwhelming amount of pins for
- 1:20:46what my personal preference is. Now that being said, you are
- 1:20:53welcome to collect whatever you love.
- 1:20:55So if what you Love Is All things Disney, or all things
- 1:20:59Marvel or all things Pixar, have at it, my friend.
- 1:21:07In the same vein as that, and this is truly how we started,
- 1:21:13we're making jokes about how large our collection is, but you
- 1:21:15also have to understand we've been collecting for like a
- 1:21:18decade now. Like we've been collecting for
- 1:21:20actually probably over a decade, for years.
- 1:21:22I mean, our love of Disney pins predates to when we have finally
- 1:21:27had enough adult money to go start traveling to the parks,
- 1:21:30right? Like, that was like a piece of
- 1:21:31the Disney parks that we could have.
- 1:21:33I have always collected them. My aunt actually started a small
- 1:21:36collection for me as a child. Because if you remember when you
- 1:21:39would buy those like special VHS tapes from the Disney Store,
- 1:21:43right? Like when they were out of the
- 1:21:43Disney vault. You will get.
- 1:21:45Lithographic prints and often they would also come with a pin.
- 1:21:50So what my aunt would do is she would buy for me and my sister,
- 1:21:53she would buy the prints and then she would buy 2 pins right?
- 1:21:57So we each got the the set of prints and we got the A pin.
- 1:22:01So I have been collecting Disney pins quite literally since I was
- 1:22:04a child. Like, it actually predates
- 1:22:06before, like, Disney pin trading being what Disney pin trading
- 1:22:10was or is terrifying. Yeah.
- 1:22:12I mean, it's really special, right?
- 1:22:14Like, my aunt has since passed on.
- 1:22:15And, you know, it's just, like a really nice memory.
- 1:22:17It was something that was really important to us.
- 1:22:19You know, we were always a big Disney family.
- 1:22:21So like, her going out of her way to get those items, Like,
- 1:22:24it's just really nice to have those things in my collection
- 1:22:27to, like, remind me of her, especially since, like, some of
- 1:22:30the lithographs have, like, gotten destroyed over the years.
- 1:22:32I mean, right. You know, Like, basements flood.
- 1:22:34Like, things happen, unfortunately.
- 1:22:36But pins being what they are, they're like fairly
- 1:22:39indestructible unless you really, really try, you know?
- 1:22:42So like it's, it's just like a nice memory.
- 1:22:44So we've been collecting Disney pens forever, but we started
- 1:22:49somewhere too, right? So it is our best advice to
- 1:22:53start small and to start and to ease your way into it, right?
- 1:22:57It could be very exciting, but it can be very overwhelming.
- 1:23:01The best place, especially if you know that you want to trade
- 1:23:05right like that is your main thing, is to get into the
- 1:23:07trading aspect of it. What we always recommend is
- 1:23:10start with a couple of mystery. Packs right you.
- 1:23:12Can get them in the parks fairly cheaply and even like at Hot
- 1:23:15Topic. Right?
- 1:23:16Like of course, prices for everything I've gone up and it
- 1:23:19is more expensive now than it has ever been.
- 1:23:22I mean, shockingly so, but still like you can usually, usually
- 1:23:25those mystery packs have like between 2:00 and 3:00 pins if
- 1:23:29you're doing like the Hot Topic or box lunch one, and then
- 1:23:32sometimes up to like 5 pins in a pack if you're doing the ones on
- 1:23:36Disney property, right? So those are a great place to
- 1:23:39start. Pick a theme that you like.
- 1:23:42So that way if you end up with something for your collection,
- 1:23:44you're like, Oh my God, that's great.
- 1:23:46Like the Disney Princess ones are always a good one for you
- 1:23:49get because you probably statistically like at least one
- 1:23:52Disney Princess that they'll have in that pack.
- 1:23:54And if you like it, you get to keep it and it's not a horrible
- 1:23:57disappointment. But if you don't like it, then
- 1:23:59you have something to begin your trading journey.
- 1:24:02So that is like our general recommended place to start as
- 1:24:05you are building your trading. Collection.
- 1:24:08Yeah, that's something we did with our kids.
- 1:24:10We did the little and I, I should have looked up the
- 1:24:12official name, but it's like the little plushy characters where
- 1:24:15they took a lot of the little sidekicks and they made them
- 1:24:17into little plushies. So like in the one that we got
- 1:24:20and we ended up keeping all of the ones that we got in that
- 1:24:23mystery set because the kids were like, those are so cute.
- 1:24:26And it was like, we can't, we couldn't help it.
- 1:24:29But like we said, we got 5 in that little set.
- 1:24:33And it was, yeah, it was. And it's super fun for kids too,
- 1:24:36to like be able to open them and then like then they get to
- 1:24:39decide like, oh, these are the ones that I got like, do I want
- 1:24:42to keep them? Do I not want to keep them?
- 1:24:44So like we got Pumbaa, we got Pascal, we got Sebastian, we got
- 1:24:49Scrump and then the if I can get him off of the board.
- 1:24:52The last one that we got was a Boo, which just like they're so
- 1:24:56stinking cute and it was fun because it was a lot of
- 1:24:58different characters. We knew that in our one pack
- 1:25:02that we picked out, we weren't going to get duplicates, which
- 1:25:04is a very big part of the trading is that people will open
- 1:25:09these mystery packs and get duplicates and then have to
- 1:25:12trade them away to try to find the ones that they want.
- 1:25:14And then it's the whole thing like we talked about before,
- 1:25:18which, you know, Duck and Jess I'm sure don't know anything
- 1:25:20about what that's like. Not once have I bought mystery
- 1:25:24ducks after mystery box the after mystery box trying to get
- 1:25:28the one that I wanted. That's never been an experience.
- 1:25:31I've had ever. I don't have a borderline
- 1:25:34gambling problem. That's not why I opened Pokémon
- 1:25:37packs on the Internet. Yeah.
- 1:25:40So they're, the mystery packs are super fun, especially if you
- 1:25:44find a set where you're like, I'm happy with any of these.
- 1:25:47But also they can be fun if you're like hunting for a
- 1:25:50certain one that you you want to, you know, the thrill of the
- 1:25:52chase a little bit too with it. Yeah.
- 1:25:54Yeah, absolutely. And so sort of in that same
- 1:25:57thing, right, like you buying the mystery boxes are a great
- 1:26:00way for you to start your trading collection.
- 1:26:02If you were interested in growing your collection
- 1:26:05collection, like your personal collection that you want to keep
- 1:26:08with you, frankly, purchasing the specific pins directly is
- 1:26:12usually a good way to kind of get that started, right?
- 1:26:15Because then you can see like, oh, this is a character that I
- 1:26:18do enjoy collecting or this is a character that maybe I don't
- 1:26:21enjoy collecting, right? So if you enjoy collecting them,
- 1:26:23then you can start hunting them out as you go into the parks or
- 1:26:26events to pin trade. And if it turns out that like
- 1:26:29this is a really character, that's for me.
- 1:26:31Like I don't really like the designs that they have for the
- 1:26:33pins that are coming out like you can and just add them to the
- 1:26:36trading pile, right? And something that's also
- 1:26:38important to know if you are interested in purchasing pins
- 1:26:41directly, pins release quite literally weekly at Disney.
- 1:26:45It is Tuesday mornings. So if you see a line in in like
- 1:26:51Adventureland out out to all the way to the front gate all the
- 1:26:55way back to Main Street, it's almost certainly a pin drop,
- 1:26:58right? Like people are fanatical about
- 1:27:00pins. And again, I'm not going to I'm
- 1:27:01not going to touch on flippers. That's not a conversation we're
- 1:27:03having here, not in public anyway.
- 1:27:06My, my thoughts are fairly well established.
- 1:27:10But yeah, so I mean, there's always there is lots.
- 1:27:13And they also will release online on Tuesday mornings
- 1:27:15usually. So if that's something that
- 1:27:17you're interested in, sometimes they are limited edition and
- 1:27:20they're only available in the parks.
- 1:27:22But sometimes they are just released online to the public if
- 1:27:25they're they're an open edition situation.
- 1:27:27So I do recommend that if you were looking to start building
- 1:27:30your personal collection, buying directly is a good way to do it.
- 1:27:33But if you're interested in the trading aspect of it, then a
- 1:27:36mystery box is usually the way to go.
- 1:27:38So that way you have some trade. Fodder, yeah.
- 1:27:41And you'll see that those prices will vary too.
- 1:27:43So keep an eye on that if you're someone that's trying to do it
- 1:27:45more of an inexpensive route if you can.
- 1:27:48I mean, pins are expensive regardless.
- 1:27:50Some of those packs, like those mystery packs that have three or
- 1:27:53five in them tend to be a little bit more cost effective per pin.
- 1:27:58But some of those limited edition pins, some of the big
- 1:28:00ones that they've had recently where the pins are physically
- 1:28:03big go upwards of even at at market price, not at resale
- 1:28:09price are $100 a $125.00. So it can be very expensive
- 1:28:13depending on what it is that you're looking for.
- 1:28:15So you've really got to keep in mind your budget and what you're
- 1:28:19looking for and the purpose of it, right?
- 1:28:21If you're just looking for pins to purchase to trade, like Duck
- 1:28:24mentioned earlier, you don't want to go for those big, big,
- 1:28:27big pins. Now if you're looking to add
- 1:28:29them to your collection to keep different story.
- 1:28:32So now that we've talked about your trading and you're
- 1:28:36collecting, what do you actually do once you physically transport
- 1:28:39the pins home and you've decided which ones are joining your
- 1:28:42collection, right? Like, what do you actually do
- 1:28:44with them? You stick them in a box.
- 1:28:47No one's kidding. You're awake.
- 1:28:49Forever to never enjoy them and never look at them.
- 1:28:52Yeah, how dare you have those pins and want to enjoy them.
- 1:28:56That is foolish. You are there for one reason and
- 1:28:59one reason only, and that is to collect every Epcot pin ever
- 1:29:03made. No.
- 1:29:04So feel like that's speaking from a deep place inside of
- 1:29:08Duck. Yeah.
- 1:29:10How dare you? Me and my little faceless Epcot
- 1:29:14Mickey, how dare you? But now so the the most common
- 1:29:19way to display them at home is some form or fashion of
- 1:29:23corkboard, right? Like the, the way that we
- 1:29:26display them generally is we bought them, we bought them on
- 1:29:29like Amazon. They were like 20 bucks for a
- 1:29:31pack of three. They're like these little
- 1:29:33hexagons and we just stuck them to the wall with command tape.
- 1:29:37And then you just put your pins in there and you can organize
- 1:29:39them how you want, right? Like I, I routinely reorganize
- 1:29:42them. So sometimes so and, and it just
- 1:29:45comes with like when you add more to the collection, right?
- 1:29:49So like I had a board that was all stitch and then I had enough
- 1:29:53stitch to fill four boards. So then what I started tipping
- 1:29:56was instead of doing it by character, I then started kind
- 1:30:00of doing it by like theme, right?
- 1:30:02So like I had a bunch of stitch like in the sand or if it was
- 1:30:05stitched with lilo or whatever, it was right?
- 1:30:08Like I also collect like movie opening day pins, right?
- 1:30:12So I have a whole bunch of those.
- 1:30:13So then I have a a stitch leave them stitch opening day pin and
- 1:30:17that got put with like my Narnia opening day pins, right?
- 1:30:19So like, however you want to display them and you want to
- 1:30:22organize them is very personal And like it's totally fine to
- 1:30:25change it over time. And in fact, that's one of the
- 1:30:27ways that like, I think we enjoy our pins most is like when we
- 1:30:31expand the collection and we're like, actually, this might be a
- 1:30:33fun new way to organize them, right?
- 1:30:35Like it's a very low stakes thing to do in your daily life.
- 1:30:38You know what I mean? Like there is nothing less low
- 1:30:41stakes than reorganizing a pin board.
- 1:30:44But like, you know, when you're going through it, it makes you
- 1:30:46feel kind of good to have a new way to display like this thing
- 1:30:50that brings you happiness, right?
- 1:30:51So. Have a have a little control
- 1:30:53over the environment that you're in and.
- 1:30:56We thought is controlling the things that I can when things
- 1:30:59feel out of control. Amen.
- 1:31:01So, yeah, so, so you know what I mean.
- 1:31:04So like that is how we will display it at home is generally
- 1:31:07just like a cork board. We have the small ones they sell
- 1:31:09huge ones people will sell on Etsy, like shaped ones.
- 1:31:13I see people do that all the time.
- 1:31:15So like there was somebody that I that I knew that had like a
- 1:31:18very extensive goofy collection and had like a four foot tall
- 1:31:23goofy pin board made like and it was like a it was like a goofy
- 1:31:27shape, right, You know what I mean?
- 1:31:28Amazing. It was like his silhouette.
- 1:31:30So like there is 1010 ways for you to choose to display it at
- 1:31:34home. Pin boards are the most logical,
- 1:31:36right? Like which have them up in the
- 1:31:38office or, or you know, like when we lived at our parents
- 1:31:41houses, like we had them in the bedroom, you know, our bedrooms
- 1:31:43or whatever cuz that was our space.
- 1:31:45But you know, however you want to have that set up, that's the
- 1:31:49easiest way. There's also like banners for
- 1:31:53you to display right? Like people on Etsy will make
- 1:31:56themed banners. That's a super common thing.
- 1:31:59There's cases I actually bought for myself for like the special
- 1:32:03pins that I have that I like want to make sure that I keep
- 1:32:05separate. Like it's almost like a pinfolio
- 1:32:09situation. It's like a case that has like a
- 1:32:11bunch of fabric sheets in it, for lack of a better term, that
- 1:32:16has zip opens in the middle. So I can store like the backing
- 1:32:19cards for them, but then I can still have them on some form of
- 1:32:22display, right? Like it's not like I have them
- 1:32:24out on the coffee table, but like if I need to bring them out
- 1:32:26to look for something or whatever it is, or like I'm
- 1:32:29reorganizing and I have decided one gets upgraded to the special
- 1:32:32folio. Like, you know what I mean?
- 1:32:34One's worthy of being migrated. So there's like 100 ten ways
- 1:32:38that you can do it. Cork boards being the most
- 1:32:40common. And then some people have like
- 1:32:42little photo albums. I actually think this is a very
- 1:32:44cute idea. If I may make a suggestion to
- 1:32:46folks out there, if there's a, we try to get like a pin, a
- 1:32:50special pin per trip, you know, whether it's for food and wine
- 1:32:55or, you know, something like that.
- 1:32:58And people will put like in a photo album, a photo of the trip
- 1:33:02and then stick the pin with the photo of that trap.
- 1:33:05And I think that's something that we're going to end up
- 1:33:06doing. And I think it's just like a
- 1:33:08very sweet idea. And it helps keep thing, keep
- 1:33:11things organized and helps you, you know, remember that.
- 1:33:13Remember that particular trip and why that pin was special.
- 1:33:16Yeah. Yeah, also, Disney themselves
- 1:33:18have started making a lot of like, different pinboards and
- 1:33:21different ways to like, display your pins.
- 1:33:22I've seen pinboards and like Hot Topic and Box Lunch that are
- 1:33:26like stitch shaped or Mickey or whatever, right?
- 1:33:30So as pin trading and pins themselves have gotten more
- 1:33:33popular, like other places are making like different ways to
- 1:33:36display them as well. So you can check out places like
- 1:33:38that too. Yeah, and something that we've
- 1:33:40done is actually do some like shadow boxes that we've put on
- 1:33:43the wall and we will combine things like our like celebrating
- 1:33:47buttons that we get in the parks with like pins and things like
- 1:33:50that. So that's another option too.
- 1:33:52A lot of those will have, it's not necessarily a cork board
- 1:33:55backing, but it's like AI don't even know what you call it.
- 1:33:59It's like a cardboard with some like Felty fabric on it kind of
- 1:34:02that they, that they have that, you know, you, you can push the,
- 1:34:05the pins through, but you just, yeah, you got to make sure you
- 1:34:07give yourself enough space to have the back or to push them
- 1:34:11through whatever it is that you're going to be utilizing.
- 1:34:15And you do have to be careful of that with some of the Amazon
- 1:34:17cork boards too, because we have, we have a similar set that
- 1:34:21we've bought like just sets of those, you know, 5 like hexagon
- 1:34:24little cork boards. Well, some of them if you push
- 1:34:27the pin through too far, it'll come out through the other end.
- 1:34:30So just fair warning, make sure that whatever you're using.
- 1:34:34Heads up to renters, you might not get your deposit right.
- 1:34:39So just just keep that in mind. But yeah, definitely a lot of
- 1:34:41really fun ways to to display those if that's what you choose
- 1:34:44to do. And I think ultimately you just
- 1:34:46have to decide is your, is your collection?
- 1:34:49Do you want it to be on display so that it can be viewed
- 1:34:52somewhere in your house? Do you want to keep it in more
- 1:34:54of like a binder that you can flip through?
- 1:34:56You know, there's lots of different ways that you can do
- 1:34:58collections with that. So you just really have to
- 1:35:01decide what it is that you, how it is that you want to have that
- 1:35:05stored at your at your your disposal so you can look through
- 1:35:09it as you choose. Cool.
- 1:35:13All right. I think in a nutshell, sort of
- 1:35:17that's pin trading. Hopefully we gave you some good
- 1:35:20ideas, some information, you know, we didn't go into types of
- 1:35:24pins and what kinds of mystery packs are out there and all that
- 1:35:28kind of stuff, because here's the deal with that.
- 1:35:29It changes so frequently and they cycle through so often what
- 1:35:35pins they have available. So it's really hard for us to
- 1:35:39say, well, they usually always have these kinds of pins because
- 1:35:41it's, you just never know what you're going to find.
- 1:35:44So really, truly going to the parks and just looking around
- 1:35:48and, and looking through what the different stores have in
- 1:35:50different shops will have different pins.
- 1:35:52And you know, we didn't get into all of that because it's just
- 1:35:54too much to speculate. And two weeks from now it, it
- 1:35:58could be all different from what we're giving you now.
- 1:36:01So we tried our best to give you the basics, make sure you know
- 1:36:04what you're getting into when it comes to pin trading, and
- 1:36:07hopefully give you something to use going forward to help you
- 1:36:11enjoy your pin experience at the Disney parks.
- 1:36:16That being said, let's briefly talk about before we wrap up
- 1:36:19what we are headed to next. So our next episode here on Mom
- 1:36:23St. will be another hub episode. We will be back with our good
- 1:36:25friend Stevie for our next episode.
- 1:36:28Not sure on the topic of that. You know, we're we're all kind
- 1:36:32of in this realm of like spooky season has started and we're
- 1:36:36almost to the holidays and next year feels like it's creeping up
- 1:36:40on us. So we're trying to figure out
- 1:36:41what we're doing over here at Mom Street.
- 1:36:43But Stevie will be with us for our next episode.
- 1:36:47And Speaking of what in the world we're doing here at Mom
- 1:36:49St., we do have a new offering that we are kind of just in the
- 1:36:54beginning stages of and that is something that we felt would be
- 1:36:59beneficial to our community. And that is a Patreon account.
- 1:37:03So if you guys are familiar with Patreon, it's kind of another
- 1:37:06one of those websites where it's kind of like a little clubhouse
- 1:37:09for your community and people that you want to connect with.
- 1:37:12So the goal is eventually to have that Patreon be replace.
- 1:37:17What are our current subscribers on our TikTok account?
- 1:37:21TikTok has made some changes recently with their subscription
- 1:37:24policy and we're not super thrilled about it.
- 1:37:28If we're being completely candid, candid.
- 1:37:30Thank you. That word was hard.
- 1:37:32Sorry if we're being completely candid.
- 1:37:33So we are going to be shifting to more of a Patreon style.
- 1:37:37We are in the very infant stages of our Patreon account, but you
- 1:37:42can find that link in our show description if you want to check
- 1:37:46it out. The main thing that we're going
- 1:37:49to have over there currently is the unedited versions of our
- 1:37:53podcast episodes are going to live over there.
- 1:37:56So we've got some friends that want the chaos that ensues what
- 1:38:00we do our live recordings. So some of that, unfortunately
- 1:38:06for time and content has to get edited out of our podcast
- 1:38:11episodes. But if you are someone that
- 1:38:13wants all of the in betweens and the chaoses and duck having to
- 1:38:18answer the phone when their sister calls and whatever real
- 1:38:23panning. Happy and you know.
- 1:38:25Yeah. So currently over there already
- 1:38:28is the extended version of our 100th anniversary that we just
- 1:38:33recorded last episode. So that already exists over
- 1:38:38there. So if you want the the chaos and
- 1:38:42the fun and the extended trivia really is the the primary thing
- 1:38:45from that episode. Unfortunately, we we did a ton
- 1:38:48of trivia with our good friend Kate, AKA the Disney sister, and
- 1:38:51we were so happy she was back and doing trivia with us.
- 1:38:54But for time's sake, I had to cut some of that out when I
- 1:38:57edited because it was a lot. While we enjoyed it in live
- 1:39:00person, wasn't going to be quite as fun for our listeners to hear
- 1:39:04on on, you know, the the re listen.
- 1:39:07But that does exist on our Patreon now.
- 1:39:10So you can find that at patreon.com/mom St.
- 1:39:14USA. So very easy to find over there.
- 1:39:17Everything is free content over there for now until we kind of
- 1:39:20figure out what we want to do with that.
- 1:39:22So please join us over there if you want some of that content
- 1:39:27and eventually some exclusive content will live over there.
- 1:39:30And we'll keep you guys posted once we kind of wrap our brains
- 1:39:33around what that's going to look like.
- 1:39:35But we would love to have you guys join us over there.
- 1:39:38So I think that is the end of our our chat for today.
- 1:39:42Duck and Jess, you guys have any final thoughts about pin trading
- 1:39:46or anything that we talked about today?
- 1:39:49I don't think there's anything I'm pin trading that we missed.
- 1:39:51Now I think I, I hope this was helpful because I know pin
- 1:39:55trading can be daunting for a lot of people, right?
- 1:39:57Like it, it seems like it's such like a well established
- 1:40:02activity. People feel intimidated
- 1:40:04participating. People are not sure how other
- 1:40:07people are going to react or like even the etiquette of
- 1:40:10asking like how to trade right? Like.
- 1:40:12So I hope that this kind of demystified that a little bit
- 1:40:15for folks. I hope folks feel more
- 1:40:17comfortable entering the hobby And like I if you have any
- 1:40:20questions about pin trading that we're not covered here, ask us
- 1:40:23in the discord. You can message any of us either
- 1:40:25on the Mom St. account or directly on our account here.
- 1:40:29Beanie Duck, like that is all totally fine.
- 1:40:31We are very happy to answer any questions that we can and if we
- 1:40:35do not know the answers, we can probably point you to somebody
- 1:40:37who is even more of a pin based expert than we are.
- 1:40:40So I hope that demystified things a little bit.
- 1:40:43So most importantly, just have fun with it, right?
- 1:40:45It's supposed to be fun. You're collecting things that
- 1:40:47you love that represent a movie you love or a character you
- 1:40:51love, right? So just like making sure you're
- 1:40:52having fun is, I think like the most important priority.
- 1:40:55Agreed. I love that so fun.
- 1:40:58Well, thank you guys all so much for joining us for this episode
- 1:41:01of Mom St. USA.
- 1:41:02As always, like we just mentioned, if you you need help
- 1:41:05with pin trading or anything else, you can always reach us
- 1:41:07Mom St. usa@gmail.com or on several of our social media
- 1:41:11platforms or on our new Patreon account that we just talked
- 1:41:14about or on the discord channel. So lots of ways that you can
- 1:41:17reach us and we will be able to get back to you over there.
- 1:41:20But thank you all so much for joining us for this pin trading
- 1:41:23one O 1 and we look forward to seeing you on the next episode
- 1:41:26of mom St. USA.
- 1:41:28Bye everyone. Bye.
