- 0:00Aloha. Saturday morning. Trade winds are in, steady and strong through the weekend. I'm Mele with what's happening in Hawaiʻi today.
- 1:35Expect moderate to strong easterly winds across all the islands. Windward and interior slopes will see showers, especially overnight and early morning — leeward beaches on the sunny sides will stay mostly dry. Ocean conditions are choppy because of the wind, and a Small Craft Advisory is active through Sunday morning, so keep small boats off the water.
- 1:53Oʻahu's south and north shores are running 4.3 and 4.4 feet — moderate surf with strong shore break and rip currents. Maui is calmer at 3 feet, the Big Island is glassy at 1.5 feet, and Kauaʻi is picking up at 5.9 feet. If you're swimming today, stick to the leeward, calmer sides of the islands.
- 2:08At Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, the Kahuku Unit Roads, Kīpukapuaulu Trail, and the Lava Tube Bridge area are currently closed. There's a Kīlauea eruption alert in effect — if you're in the area, take precautions against volcanic ash.
- 2:20If you're flying out of Hawaiʻi today or tomorrow, here's what catches most people off guard: the agricultural bag check happens on departure, not arrival. Our piece on why that system exists — and how to pack so you clear it fast — walks through what inspectors look for and the items that actually slow you down. It's a first-timer surprise worth knowing before you get to the gate.
- 2:39Conditions ease slightly early next week as the winds back off. Windward showers should taper by mid-week, so if water sports are on your list, later in the week is your window.
- 2:48Full piece is on the site. Catch you tomorrow.
