- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. Luna: Hey Lucas! So good to be here. Ready for another episode. Lucas: Absolutely. So last time we did 'beautiful' and 'ugly' — cantik and hodoh. Remember those? Luna: Oh yeah! Bunga itu cantik. Baju ini hodoh. Got it. Lucas: Nice. Today we're going to learn two more adjectives: 'old' and 'new' in Malay. Very useful when you're talking about things like a car, a phone, a house. Luna: Ohh, like when something is old and worn out, or brand new. I'm in. Lucas: Great. So the word for 'old' is tua. T-U-A. Tua. Luna: Tua. Tua. Lucas: Perfect. And 'new' is baru. B-A-R-U. Baru. Luna: Baru. Baru. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's put them in sentences. For example: 'This car is old.' In Malay: Kereta ini tua. Luna: Kereta ini tua. So kereta is car, ini is this, tua is old. Lucas: That's right. Say it with me: Kereta ini tua. Luna: Kereta ini tua. Lucas: Good. Now what if the car is new? 'This car is new.' — Kereta ini baru. Luna: Kereta ini baru. Ohh, so just swap tua for baru. Easy. Lucas: Yeah. Now let's try with 'phone'. Telefon ini baru. 'This phone is new.' Telefon ini baru. Luna: Telefon ini baru. Like if you just got the latest iPhone. Lucas: Exactly. And if it's an old phone? Telefon ini tua. Luna: Telefon ini tua. Got it. Lucas: Now let's try 'house'. Rumah itu baru. 'That house is new.' Rumah itu baru. Luna: Rumah itu baru. So itu means 'that'. Rumah itu baru. Lucas: Yes. And if the house is old? Rumah itu tua. Luna: Rumah itu tua. Lucas: Perfect. So we have: Kereta ini tua. Kereta ini baru. Telefon ini tua. Telefon ini baru. Rumah itu tua. Rumah itu baru. Luna: Let me try a full sentence on my own. Umm... Buku ini baru. 'This book is new.' Right? Lucas: That's exactly right, Luna! Buku ini baru. You got it. Luna: And Buku ini tua would be 'This book is old.' Lucas: Yes, though usually for books we might say 'lama' for old, but tua works too. Luna: Oh, there's another word? But we'll stick with tua for now. Lucas: Yeah, let's keep it simple. So let's quickly review: tua means old, baru means new. Luna: Tua. Baru. Tua. Baru. Lucas: Great. Now let's imagine you're at a market, and you see a nice new bag. You could say: Beg ini baru. Luna: Beg ini baru. I love that. And if it's an old bag? Beg ini tua. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's practice a little conversation. I'll ask: Kereta ini baru? 'Is this car new?' And you answer: Ya, kereta ini baru. Luna: Ya, kereta ini baru. Lucas: Good. Now: Rumah itu tua? 'Is that house old?' Luna: Ya, rumah itu tua. Lucas: Perfect. You're getting the hang of it. Luna: Thanks Lucas. You know, this is really helping me describe things around me. Lucas: That's the goal. And speaking of helping, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Malay, we just want to mention that a handful of listeners chip in monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, and that's literally what funds making this many of these episodes. Luna: Yeah, it's totally listener-supported. No ads, just people who enjoy learning. So if you find it valuable, that's the way to keep it going. Lucas: Exactly. No pressure. Now back to tua and baru. Let's do one more example: Saya ada kereta baru. 'I have a new car.' Luna: Saya ada kereta baru. I have a new car. Nice. Lucas: And if you have an old car? Saya ada kereta tua. Luna: Saya ada kereta tua. Lucas: Great. Now let's try a quick challenge. I'll say a sentence in English, you say it in Malay. Ready? Luna: Ready! Lucas: 'This phone is old.' Luna: Telefon ini tua. Lucas: Yes! 'That house is new.' Luna: Rumah itu baru. Lucas: Wonderful. 'This book is old.' Luna: Buku ini tua. Lucas: Perfect. You nailed it, Luna. Luna: Thanks Lucas! So today we learned tua and baru. Tua means old, baru means new. Lucas: That's it. Practice these with things around you. Your bag, your phone, your shoes. And we'll see you next time for more Malay. Luna: Bye bye! Selamat tinggal! Lucas: Selamat tinggal! Practice until then.
