- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Well, good day, everybody.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: I'm so glad that you have joined us for another episode of North Bible Recap.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: And this is number eight.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Eight.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Okay, I've got two more fingers left.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: And today I am so excited about original guest.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: And that is the Pastor Hedy Coleman.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Let's go.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: How are you doing?
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: I'm doing great.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Good, good, good.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Thanks for having me.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Well, I it's an honor, it's a privilege, and I love talking to you anytime.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: But when we're talking about God's word, it's even that much better.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: That much richer.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Be able to dive in.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Okay, so every week we talk about God's word.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Going along our reading plan, reading one, reading two, uh, you can find that at the North Church app, and you can just read along with us.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: I hope that you will share this information uh with others.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: If we're gonna dive deep today, and I hope that it blesses you as we kind of share some of the nuggets that we're getting from it, maybe little things that maybe you didn't know, but I hope that you will just listen intently and share it with somebody else.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: So, Pastor Hetty, uh, we're looking at today uh the book of Mark, chapters 14, 15, and 16.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: We're gonna wrap up that book of the Bible, then we're gonna go into the book of Judges, chapters 10, through the rest of the book of Judges, and then we're gonna look at Psalms uh 120 uh through 123, and then also we're gonna get a great proverb from you.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: So let's start uh by looking at the book of Mark.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: What's your thoughts?
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: Oh my goodness.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: So this was in our originals, but can we can we talk about this?
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: Okay, so uh Mark 14, 38 and 39.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: It says, 38 says, keep watch and pray so that you will not give in to temptation, for the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: 39 then says, This is what I want to I want to ask you about this, okay?
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Okay, all right.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: You don't mind.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: I don't know, we'll find out in a second.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: Then Jesus left them again and prayed the same prayer as before.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: I had never seen this.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: Then Jesus left them again and prayed the same prayer as before.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: Now, the reason I bring this up is because I recently had a discussion around the uh God's word with uh Dan Newton, who's a mentor of mine.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: And he says that they were talking about in their Bible study how it's not important to pray the same prayer again.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: And I had never seen this, I didn't have a verse that said I just felt like in my spirit, yes, you can go back and pray as many times.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Well, the verse that I thought about is when Jesus says, knock, right?
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: He says you keep knocking and the guy bring down the bread or whatever you need.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: And so, but I had never seen here where Jesus left then again and prayed the same prayer.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: So good.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: So, so first off, on this right here, I I one, that that is so good.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: When you mentioned, like I've never seen this before, yeah, I can't tell you how many times I'm reading the scripture.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: And I've I've read through the Bible many times.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Yes, I I read through the Bible every year for almost 20 years straight for sure.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Besides, sometimes I will listen to it, yeah, uh, besides reading through it um multiple times.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: And I can't tell you how many times I've done just what you just told me is that I've never seen that before.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: And actually, I mean, I can't say that I know I've read it before, but I don't know if it's ever jumped out at me like that.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: And sometimes God does that at the right moment or right situation.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I do agree.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: I remember years ago, somebody said, no, no, you pray one time and you just leave it alone.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: And that's no, no.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: I don't think that that is consistent with God's word.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: I think that uh because sometimes we can tie that to feel like what's doubt if you just if you have to pray it more than once.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: No, I think it's just like a kid that keeps asking mom and dad for something until finally mom and dad give in.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it's not that God's wanting just to like just beg for him, he's wanting our attention more than just giving us something.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: And I think that sometimes that keep asking is reminding ourselves where our desperation is, yeah, where who meets our needs.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: And that it's not me.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: And and we're not here just to command him around, but we are here to go to him, our heavenly father, and say, here's my need.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: And we're reminding ourselves I need you.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: I can't do this myself.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: And this also just shows me I'm a father, you're a father.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: There's nothing like my children coming to me in a time of need or with a life question.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Those have been some of my most richest times with my kids, is when they're coming to me and they just need some answers.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: And that's what prayer is about.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: That's what I've here.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: Jesus is going and he's spending time with his father.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: He's praying.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: He's just going to dad and saying, Dad, I got a lot going on.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: How can you, will you help me?
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: But if if not, I'm good with whatever you want from me.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: So good.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: You know, and and I think that too, to know that that was the way that Jesus responded to God.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: So good.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: It's the same way we want from our kids.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm gonna give you these directions.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: I just want you to embrace them.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: Now, it's okay for you to ask questions around the direction that I'm giving you, but then after that, just go follow through.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: Because in this season of life, I know what's best for you.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: And that's or I know the sometimes it's not even so much as a believer, sometimes it's like this isn't best, what's best for you, but it's best for the people that you're gonna be around.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: Serving on Sunday mornings, sometimes it's not what's best for me that makes me show up.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: It's what I know that's gonna happen for somebody else's life.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: So good.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: And that's where Jesus was headed, right?
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: As we as we know, verse uh chapter 15 and 16, that's where we get to, is this climax as Jesus is going to follow through on what his father wanted for him, not so much for not for himself, yeah, but for us.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: You know, I had I had a lady walk up to me uh at church this past weekend, and she had her child.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Her child probably looked like five years of age, four, four uh to five, no older than maybe five.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: And she said, Could you talk to my son just a little bit?
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: And we're like just walking in, just like this can't be very long, about what it means to um that Jesus, how did Jesus uh did he do things that he did not want to do for his father?
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: And I I I think maybe God set that up for right now, this moment.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: And so I just immediately thought about it and I said, Well, yeah, yeah, yeah, he he did.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: And then I just told the young boy, Chris, I guess mama's having problems with uh with the little one not doing what it you know uh she wants him to do, yeah, because he doesn't want to do it.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: And so I just said, Yes, absolutely.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Jesus did not want to go to the cross.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: It wasn't like he was like, Yeah, yeah, let's go.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the Bible says in Hebrews that for the joy set before him, because he saw the end product, but the end, but that he did not, matter of fact, in the garden, he's saying, Father, please let this cup pass from me.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: This cup was the cup of suffering that he was going to have to endure.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Um, and that was the cross.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but yet still he said, Yeah, not my will, yeah, but your will be done.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I will, and obviously he says he prayed multiple times.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: I believe that was probably the same prayer he's praying again and again.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: It's like Father, please let this come pass for me.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: But yet, not my will, yeah, your will be done.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:09unknown: Yeah.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: And and and that was based on what it was gonna do for us.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: And so uh sometimes it's not about what we're gonna get out of something, but how it's gonna impact other people.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: But we at the end, at the end of the day, though, you do get something out of it when you see how it impacts other people, it's there's a joy in you, there's this happiness, there's this, there's this, oh, I'm pleased with the result.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: Even though initially we were not there.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: You know, when you when you think about uh Jesus in the garden and going to the cross, because that's basically what 14 is uh and 15 and 16 is just him going to the cross.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: It's about his um trial before Pilate.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: It's about him being denied by his uh his main person, Peter, three times, and then all of the disciples basically flinging and hiding and protecting their their themselves, not and the mockery he was made of, all the stuff.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Think about all the things that how Jesus responded with humility, uh love, kindness.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: And these are things are very important to you because you lead the way uh you know in vocalizing our need as followers of Jesus to do these things.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: So could you speak to that just a little bit?
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: Because how important for us to lead like Christ led in showing us at the most crucial, difficult time of his life, how he led with these top words that are very important to you.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: No, um I think that so ask that one more time.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: So just basically Jesus in the crucifixion and going through the humility, kindness, yes, uh, all of those things that Jesus represents, even when he was being betrayed by his uh closest, Peter denying him three times, uh standing before Pilate, who he had all power to call heaven, but yet he's showing the fruit of the spirit.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's showing discipline, yeah, self-discipline.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: He could have called the boomer.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, self-control.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: He he is could he is using all of these patience with people, yeah, kindness.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: Speak to that.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: You so you're saying that let me I'm gonna read this verse because okay, so the people arrive.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: Judas walks, uh walks, walks up to Jesus, rabbi, he exclaimed, This is verse uh 45, and gave him the kiss.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: Then the others grabbed Jesus, arrested him.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: But one of the men with Jesus pulled out his sword and struck the high priest's slave, slashing off his ear.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: And Jesus asked him, Am I, am I some dangerous revolutionary that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me?
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: He's like, You're coming at me as though I'm not gonna be patient with you, as though I'm not gonna be kind, as though I'm not gonna be gentle, as though I don't have self-control to deal with some of the most harshest times of my life.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Because that's what he had practiced throughout his journey over the 33 years.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: And speaking of the last three as an adult and going into his ministry, like he was all about these things.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: And I think in this moment, when uh there there's one uh another uh gospel where he says, put back your sword, Peter.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: He tells Peter to put back his sword because he's then teaching Peter what it looks like to have self-control, how to respond.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: And that is how we begin to be witnesses for him.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: Because people see how we respond in some of our most crucial times, and they're expecting us to respond like the world will respond.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: But as believers, when Jesus responded this way to somebody coming with swords and like, yeah, let's fight.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: Like I would have been like, yeah, let's fight.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: I'm with Peter, let's go at a certain time in my life.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: But then later, as I began to follow Jesus' example and let the Holy Spirit work in me, then I'm like, that's not the way I'm gonna, I'm I'm gonna I hope that I will respond this way that Jesus did.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, you talk about that certain time of your life when you just said, Let's go.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: Let's go, yeah.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: Um, I would have been on your team.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: Let's make this happen.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Okay, so this is so good.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: Um because what you're speaking to is that Jesus in the most difficult, most dark, most hard, because oftentimes what happens in our difficult, dark, desperate times, oftentimes the worst of us comes out.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but not Jesus.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the best comes out.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: Not the best.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: Of course, he always had the best.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: But but that's but that's what we need to learn is to follow that.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: That's why we that's why we say follow Jesus.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: That's why we say love God, love people.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but how do we do that?
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: Well, follow Jesus' example.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: He's the only one that actually did those two things.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: Exactly right.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and so so one of the the points here is obedience is the pathway to spiritual strength.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: The win is not in avoiding the cross, but is enduring it faithfully.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: Here recently in my house, we've been talking about trust God, do hard things, embrace the suffering.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: Trust God, do hard things, embrace the suffering.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: Because out of that suffering, we grow to trust Him even more.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: And that's really I'm I'm saying that to my family, but that's really for me around some of the most practical things like eating habits, getting up early to walk, um, exercise in my life.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: Like some of those things that I struggle with the most.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: I'm like, God will fulfill me and the things that I need if I just go ahead and do the hard things.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: So good.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: So go ahead.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: So let's let's now kind of lean into chapter 16.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: It's about the resurrection.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: Because why is the resurrection so important?
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: That's the big win.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: That's the that is the big win.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: Uh the the verse says, he is not here, he has risen.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: And that's where everybody celebrates.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: And it gives us hope.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: Because now we are the resurrection in Christ.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: Uh we everything that Christ said um comes true.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: Everything is possible because of the resurrection.
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: That this life is not it alone.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: That we will have a resurrected body and a new life in Christ.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: And that's what we that's what gets us up every day in a sense of like to live for him.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: And we're able to do that because he was risen.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: He went to his father, and then he sent back who?
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: The Holy Spirit to be able to work in us.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: Now, Pastor Hetty, I'm I want to kind of wrap up chapter before we dive into um the book of Judges.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: I want to kind of wrap up the ending of the book of Mark.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: For people that are watching and you know, you're reading, you're a you're astute in the Bible.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: If you if you will look, there's it will say like after verse number eight of chapter 16, um, that most of the manuscripts conclude with uh chapter 16 and verse number eight.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: But then there were some later manuscripts that have a shorter version with adding one more verse, and then there's a longer version, which we traditionally have in our Bibles that runs all the way through um verse number 20, okay?
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: And so I I just want to kind of address that because for people that are watching, like what's like what's going on with that?
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Why is it seems like they're trying to cut out the Bible or anything like that?
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: And I just want to address um there's those three major endings, okay?
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: Um obviously the first is the oldest manuscripts that they have that dates that maybe John Mark, again, John Mark is the writer of it, but again, he's writing it based upon what Peter is giving him.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: So Peter is his is his mentor, his the one that's disciplining him.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: He's writing uh what Peter is giving him, and it just kind of ends there.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: Okay, so because we we know that Peter was one of those that just kind of was blunt and to the point and boom, in.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: But we don't know exactly what happened.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: It could be that some of that original ending was lost for a while and then was found later on uh that came from Peter.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: Uh, or it could be that some people believe that some of the later disciples in around 100 AD, which is not long after, uh, that's where the the shorter version, and then the second longer version, most believe it was added around 150 to 200 AD at the latest.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: But it shows up in some of the manuscripts around the uh fourth century, okay?
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: And so what what's what's what's going on here?
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: So some people believe that maybe some of those disciples, some of those that heard the stories, begin to add to that because they knew that it wasn't quite complete with the book of Mark.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: Now, whatever's happened, what we do know is this we can we can take solace, we can take assurance that what is written, those verses after verse 8, all the way through to verse number 20, are consistent with the other gospels.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: They are not some tangent that's pulled out of nowhere uh or information that does not make sense and does not align with scripture.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: So what we do know is that you can rest assured that when you are reading that, that you are reading God's word.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: Now, was it in the original manuscripts that John Mark wrote on behalf of Peter?
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: Uh we do know that the oldest manuscripts don't point to that, but we can honestly, and most theologians, everybody believe that it doesn't need to come out of the Bible because it is very consistent with all the other endings of the Gospels and uh does not contradict anything from God's Word.
- 18:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: And that's important to understand.
- 18:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's good.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: Thanks for sharing that.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: So let's let's dive into uh the book of Judges.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Let's let's go into it and let's look at um we're gonna go from uh basically from chapter number 10 all the way through the rest of the book of Judges, which that book is dude, that's it's gruesome, isn't it?
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: There's a lot going on.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: There's a lot going on.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: Can I can I ask you about can I can I just jump in?
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: I know you you'll probably dive into this and and do a a great job, but like I think the thing that I'm let me go to 1010.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: Finally they cried out to the Lord for help, saying, We have sinned against you because we have abandoned you as our God and have served the images of Baal.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: The Lord replied, Did I not rescue you from the Egyptians and the Emorites and the Amenites and the Philistines?
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: And he goes on to break down everybody that he has saved them from.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: And then he says, But the Israelites pleaded with the Lord and said, We have sinned.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: Punish us as you see fit, only rescue us today from our enemies.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: Then the Israelites put aside their foreign gods and served the Lord, and he was grieved by their misery.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: Even though he they were doing all the things that they were not supposed to, they were still willing to come to him and ask for forgiveness.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: And I just think I just think about it in my own life, like the times I disappoint God every day.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: And I'm and I say this because sometimes we read the Old Testament and we're like, the Old Testament don't matter.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: But the Old Testament encourages me so much, yeah, because it just shows me like my life, even though I wasn't in that time and we have Jesus Christ, but it still is just so encouraging to me because these people were just so human, yeah, and in so need of a savior.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: No, and that's the whole that's the whole point.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: Um, is that they needed a king.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: Not a small case k king, but a large k king, and that's King Jesus, yeah, ultimately, who who we would get.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: And but yeah, you're so right.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: It speaks the old testament for sure is so raw.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: It's it's so um, it just spells out humanity's uh depravity, and it speaks to all of our issues.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: And when we begin to think that, oh, we we're good enough.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: No, we're not none of us are good enough.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: And I think that our sinful behaviors of our own individual, no matter who you are, you have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: That's the whole that's the whole message.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: And the Old Testament, specifically the book of Judges, really gets into that.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because it speaks to just just chaos, compromise, and this incredible need uh for God in people's lives.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: But um, you know, what you have in the book of Judges is repeated generational.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: So they came and repented, called out to God, they acknowledged the things, God healed them, but then every generation has to make their choice.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: So there'd be generation.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Generation that would do pretty good, and then another generation come up.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: And that's why it's so important in church.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: Why is it so important for children's ministry?
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: Why is it so important for student ministry?
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: Youth, why is it so important for young adults?
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: Every generation has to encounter Christ for themselves.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: Would you agree?
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, for sure.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: And that's the reason we want to continue to invest and keep teaching God's word to our to the next generation.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: Uh, because I love what you recently, you preached the message about worship.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: He's like, it's not about who can jump the highest, it's not about all these things.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: It's about living out a life for him, is the way that we worship.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: And we got to start teaching the same way like we love to bring the kids in on Thursday night for the worship part so they can see how we worship in song and everything.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: But we also got to show them what that looks like to live a life for him.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: So they can begin to remain faithful to him, so they won't be like the Israelites and kind of going back and forth with him.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so worship is not just singing songs, singing songs and lifting our hands and clapping and giving and serving is part of our worship.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: But um real worship that's going to impact the next generation is how we live in our apartments.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: It's how we live in our homes.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: It's how we handle difficult situations.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: In that, like in our humanity, how we can continue to fall short, like the Israelites.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: I think sometimes God's faithfulness towards us can sometimes make us feel like we can keep living in any way that we we want.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: You know, we talk about that a lot as far as like helping.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: The people we get to serve, how they just continue to live a life and think, and we can feel like it's okay.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: Where it's like, no, we gotta live a life for him based on what laid out in God's word.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: I remember when I first surrendered my life to God in a way that I'm like, God, I want to live for you.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: Then he says Monday through Sunday.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: And I was like, Well, what is Monday through Sunday?
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: But essentially what he was saying, short stories, like, I gotta get in his word daily so it can change my life.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: Okay, so talk about that a little bit because we we're talking about diving to God's word.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: We're kind of breaking down judges and mark and stuff, but one thing I appreciate you uh uh immediately noticed about you is that you really truly believe that God's word is your daily bread.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: And you truly put that into practice, just like you eat food for your flesh, your physical body, is that even more important is spiritual substance.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: That's God's word.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I I think um, when when God told me Monday through Sunday, and I've mentioned some of the verses that he he led me to, uh Psalms 1, 2, uh 1 Peter 2 and 2, Judges, uh Joshua 1, 8, where they talk about meditating on his word day and night.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: And when he when he said that to me, like it wasn't so much that I was gonna become this theologian and I can break down God's word like the bishop or a pastor Samson.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: He was just telling me, because he called he had a different calling for my life, that it was just so important that I start holding, and it's important for everybody, but it for me it was like I gotta really let this word change the way that I live my life, because my ministry was gonna be based around something completely different than what I thought was the thing of being in the pulpit and teaching God's word, where I do that in a different way.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: I'm more of an encourager, but for me, he called me the outreach.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: And when he said, What is it?
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: When I asked God, like, what is outreach?
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: He says, Acts of kindness.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: I was like, Well, what is acts of kindness for?
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: And he says, It is the way that I'm gonna use your life.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: So later in life, when you have an encounter with somebody with kindness, the Holy Spirit's gonna ask them, Do you know why he opened that door for you?
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: Do you know why he delivered a red balloon?
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: Do you know why he sent you?
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: And we all do that, but for me, that was a particular thing that God called me to do.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: So good.
- 26:17SPEAKER_01: You know, and so that's and that's so money through Sunday is about me just digging in God's word in a way that it's like, okay, God changed me with this.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: So, Pastor Hetty, why don't you go ahead and wrap us up for um chapter uh for the book of Judges?
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: Kind of maybe a teaching point that's key.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: Uh maybe a question, something we could think of that's gonna help us out, and then maybe that just final verse that is going to we we gotta let resonate inside of us.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: Well, so the point that that I that I wrote down that I really thought on and chewed on was leadership begins with surrender, not strength.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: Godly influence flows from integrity, not popularity.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: You know, and and so it's it's not about me being out and and being world renowned or famous.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: It's about me just surrendering my life to him.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: Because out of that, strength's gonna happen, right?
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: Out of that, that that trust God, do hard things, embrace the suffering.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: And I've heard you say this before, is that and it's a question am I living my life out of impulse or intention?
- 27:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: Am I letting my flesh just respond to what or am I reacting as the Holy Spirit leads me?
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: That's so important.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: So the key verse.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: Let's kind of wrap it up here.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: Josh, uh Judges 21, 25 says this in those days Israel had no king.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: All the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: Help us, Lord.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: What is today?
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: October, it's it's it's 2025.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: This is more true than ever.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: We just out here doing anything that we think is right based on our flesh, where it's like that's definitely not the way that we should be living.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: And we gotta be praying, we gotta keep teaching God's word.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: We gotta keep the North reading plan before people because we gotta keep living for Him.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: So good.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: So good.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: Okay, now let's go into Psalms uh 120 uh through verse 123.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: And these are um these are called the songs of journey or the songs of ascent.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: And I'm gonna kind of break this down.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: Feel free to jump in anytime you uh want on this.
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: And these are absolutely powerful to consider.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: And there's a teaching point here, uh, and that is about integrity and transparency and the foundation of you know, of God directing our lives.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: But I I I specifically want to kind of lean into um uh these songs of ascent that were traditionally sung by the Israelites as they would travel on their pilgrimages to Jerusalem.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: Okay, and there were three major festivals, and that is the Passover, uh, which was done in the spring, uh, which was that was celebrating what God did of bringing them out of Egypt's bondage and uh you know, and eventually over into the land of Canaan.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: Uh, and then also the Feast of Weeks, which would happen 50 days after Passover, uh, which was the celebration of the Torah being given on Mount Sinai, and then there was the Feast of Tabernacles, that was remembering um, you know, the journeys in Israel when they would go out and they make these shelters, they live outside uh that basically just a fancy camping trip uh for uh several days, and they would remember and they would sing these songs.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: Okay, and in Psalms 120, uh basically that whole chapter is about deliver me, O Lord.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: And all of these are so good.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, these songs of ascent that they would sing, and it it's about um when we are in distress, it causes us to turn our dependence to God.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: Um it's about longing uh for God's uh desired uh purpose and plans for our and seeking out truth and peace that only he can give.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: In Psalms 121, um it reminds us that our help comes from the Lord.
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: It's about trusting God's protection and provision throughout life's journey and that he is our source, that God watchful uh watches over us with care, and that he has comprehend comprehensive protection in our lives.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: And that God is a faithful keeper.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: Psalms 122, um, it's one that you probably grew up saying.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: I I said uh I heard many times in our church, what was that verse that we had here said?
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: I was glad that they said when they said unto me, Come into the house of the Lord Let us go into the house of the Lord.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: Let us go into the house of the Lord.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: And basically what he's doing saying is that it's the longing for the temple.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: It's a longing for the speak to that just for a moment because people I read some numbers that the average person who calls themselves faithful to church goes one in every six weekends now.
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: Did you have a problem with that?
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: I I do have a problem because I think that goes back to understanding like it's it's not always about me, but sometimes I'm just showing up for other people.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: And that that week that you may not be there may be the week that God has you to specifically connect with somebody and you didn't miss out.
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: But Hebrews 10.24 talks about let us uh consider ways that motivate one another to love and do good, do good.
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: And he says, don't forsake the assembling together with one another.
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: Acts 2 talks about they were going from house to house on a regular basis, and that's how they learned each other's needs.
- 31:57SPEAKER_01: It is such a need for us to be at church on a regular basis.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: And one out of six weeks just breaks my heart.
- 32:04SPEAKER_01: Every time I show up on a Sunday, I know that there's so many people who are not there that should be there.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: And then Psalms 123 is uh to lift my eyes unto the Lord from whom our help comes from.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: So it's just maybe maybe it's fixing our eyes on him above.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: It's about posturing ourselves for servanthood, it's about crying for mercy.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: These Psalms are so just beautiful and wonderful.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: And they bless my heart and soul.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, time is slipping away for us right now, but I do want you to take just a moment to um talk about a proverb.
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: Give us uh Pastor Hetty uh a proverb from Psalms, excuse me, Prop Psalms, from Proverbs chapter 28 that maybe really speaks to you.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm trying to find my the ones that I wanted to hit on here.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: And as you're finding that, I just want to encourage you to those prom proverbs.
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: Uh we're not spending our time just kind of diving into the proverbs, but we're each week kind of just doing a nugget or so.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: Uh, but I'm telling you, they are so good.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: They're just verse by verse, they're like, oh yeah, oh yeah, I can relate to that.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: You end up highlighting all of them.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: But this is what it says.
- 33:17SPEAKER_01: It says, better to be poor and honest than to be dishonest and rich.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: Better to be poor and honest than dishonest and rich.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: Um one of the things I always have to I tell my children this all the all the time about understanding the the opportunity to to think of to be with less than more uh unless that more is coming out of the blessings of what God wants to give you.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: Um because one the one of the reasons I tell them that is because it allows for you to make decisions based on what God's calling to you for you to do in that season.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: And I think sometimes, whenever uh, and this is just my thought when I read this, is sometimes God can use people who who have less because they're not as attached to things as people who have a lot.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: And when you have a lot and then you start trying to keep it because it was something that you worked for versus it was something that God just blessed you with, now the dishonesty comes because now you're trying to keep that.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: And that's a real struggle for us as as people.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: And in and in that, so with my kids, I'm like, just and people can say, don't tell your kids that.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: I always say stay poor because then it allows for you to move differently based on how God wants you.
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: And I feel like my my middle son, and I think Kenna too, my oldest son, has done done well with this.
- 34:53SPEAKER_01: Like right now, Zell is married with a child, and and they make no, they're literally poor in a sense of like they are they live in a one-room house, they are literally poor.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: But you know what?
- 35:11SPEAKER_01: I would say that Zell and Emma and Zaley are some of the happiest people that I know.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: Because of their positioning of this being without all these things, or going out and buying new cars and trying to do all these things, they're able to do work that fulfills their life.
- 35:30SPEAKER_00: So good.
- 35:33SPEAKER_00: Gratitude maketh rich rich.
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: The more grateful you are, the wealthier you are.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: And just remember that.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay.
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: And so yeah.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: Hey, Pastor Hetty, thank you so very much.
- 35:53SPEAKER_01: Thank you for letting me be on.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: I appreciate this.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: I really, really enjoyed it.
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: I hope that you also enjoyed it out there in the podcast world.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: And I look forward to seeing you the next time on North Bible Recap.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: Thank you again.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: God bless.
