Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Don't hold your breath for a new Harbour crossing, Auckland
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So we've been waiting for decades for somebody, anybody to
- 0:03Speaker 1: build a new bridge or tunnel or pretty much anything
- 0:06Speaker 1: across Auckland's harbor. The consultant bill now one hundred million
- 0:10Speaker 1: dollars across the current National and former Labour governments. The
- 0:15Speaker 1: most galling part of that, of course, was the fifty
- 0:18Speaker 1: million spent on consultants for Labour's plan to put a
- 0:21Speaker 1: one billion dollar cycling only bridge over the harbor. Remember that.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Can you imagine sitting in a car on the bridge
- 0:31Speaker 1: in peak hour traffic, looking across the whitee matar and
- 0:35Speaker 1: seeing a gold plated bike bridge being constructed with no
- 0:40Speaker 1: option for driving madness. Those living in outer urban areas
- 0:45Speaker 1: of Auckland, eighty percent of them commute to work by car,
- 0:48Speaker 1: So we're one hundred million down. A lot of the
- 0:52Speaker 1: old promises, we're told didn't even involve anybody going to
- 0:55Speaker 1: have a look at the seafloor to investigate. All just
- 0:57Speaker 1: done on computer at home, some computer modeling the barge
- 1:01Speaker 1: and the harbor that we've talked about on the show
- 1:03Speaker 1: previously with Wayne Brown. That's apparently doing some actual testing,
- 1:07Speaker 1: which has got to be a good thing. We now
- 1:09Speaker 1: have three plans or options on the go, a new
- 1:13Speaker 1: study on the costs, the time frame, the benefits of
- 1:16Speaker 1: a bridge or a tunnel. By the way, the NDTA
- 1:19Speaker 1: board preferred a tunnel, a new one million dollar mile
- 1:24Speaker 1: of reef study as a sop to Wayne Brown, and
- 1:27Speaker 1: a private consortium with an idea we know very little
- 1:31Speaker 1: about at this point. For anyone about to hit rush
- 1:34Speaker 1: our traffic this morning, please don't hold your breath for
- 1:37Speaker 1: any quick fixes or even decisions on anything crossing the
- 1:42Speaker 1: bridge anytime soon. For more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge,
- 1:47Speaker 1: listen live to News Talk set Be from five am weekdays,
