• 0:26
Speaker 3: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real Talk, real experience,
• 0:30
Speaker 3: real results, Frank Walker, Law dot Com. Let that conversation
• 0:34
Speaker 3: begin on Let's talk.
• 0:36
Speaker 1: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, this is Carley with Let's Talk.
• 0:40
Speaker 1: And in the building today we have Hollis Lewis and
• 0:44
  Speaker 1: Lisa Odie.
• 0:45
Speaker 2: Hello, lady and Jen.
• 0:49
Speaker 1: This is one of those like really difficult kind of
• 0:53
Speaker 1: days when you when you lose two coaches that with
• 1:01
Speaker 1: name recognition, Yes, it's kind of crazy, and both of
• 1:09
Speaker 1: them really having a lot of success.
• 1:13
  Speaker 4: They were icons.
• 1:14
Speaker 1: Yes, yes, I mean you could make the case two
• 1:18
Speaker 1: of probably the most notable.
• 1:22
Speaker 2: Coaches ever in high school in high school.
• 1:26
Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm just gonna give a little bit of background
• 1:29
Speaker 5: information on what you're referring to, Carl. So, this past week,
• 1:34
Speaker 5: we lost, like we said, two of West Virginia coaching
• 1:37
Speaker 5: communities icons. The first that we lost on February sixteenth
• 1:42
Speaker 5: was coach Roger Jefferson. For those that aren't familiar with
• 1:46
Speaker 5: some of his accomplishments, I'll just run over a few
• 1:49
Speaker 5: of these. He was a four time state champion coach
• 1:54
Speaker 5: who led Charleston High School in nineteen eighty eight to
• 1:57
Speaker 5: a state title, and then the following year, when Stonewall
• 2:01
Speaker 5: and Charleston High consolidated, the very first team that Capitol fielded,
• 2:07
Speaker 5: they won a state title in nineteen eighty nine. So
• 2:11
Speaker 5: those were two of his most prolific wins, I would say.
• 2:15
Speaker 5: And then of course later on in nineteen ninety one
• 2:17
Speaker 5: and nineteen ninety five, he led Capitol High School to
• 2:20
Speaker 5: two more titles. So he was also a West Virginia
• 2:23
Speaker 5: Sports Writer Coach of the Year overall in nineteen ninety
• 2:27
Speaker 5: so very accomplished man. And then a day later, on
• 2:31
Speaker 5: February seventeenth, this was within twenty four hours, we lost
• 2:34
Speaker 5: coach Scott Tinsley. And he was a man who was
• 2:37
Speaker 5: known as being very innovative as an offensive offensive mind.
• 2:43
Speaker 5: You know, he notably coached at Saint Aubans GW, and
• 2:48
Speaker 5: he also was the offensive coordinator I believe when Jr.
• 2:52
Speaker 5: House played at Nitro, and so he led five of
• 2:56
Speaker 5: six teams to the playoffs. Both of these gentlemen that
• 3:02
Speaker 5: we've lost, you know, our losses for our community. What
• 3:06
Speaker 5: are your thoughts, guys?
• 3:07
Speaker 1: Well, I speaking of coach Tinsley, I had a pretty
• 3:10
Speaker 1: good relationship with Coach Tinsley. He was an innovator of
• 3:15
Speaker 1: offensive football. He pretty much, I would say, brought the
• 3:18
Speaker 1: air raid system to West Virginia back when you know,
• 3:21
Speaker 1: in the late nineties when everybody was running the verer
• 3:25
Speaker 1: and the options and the wing tea's. He really spread
• 3:28
Speaker 1: it open. It had just a prolific offensive you know
• 3:31
Speaker 1: football with JR. House and Chris Martin. But I would
• 3:34
Speaker 1: also back up he also coached at West Virginia Tech
• 3:37
Speaker 1: when he was in Montgomery. He also coached at West
• 3:39
Speaker 1: Virginia State. And at West Virginia State he had Ken Grier,
• 3:43
Speaker 1: who was a prolific Division two maybe they was in
• 3:46
Speaker 1: IAA at that time, but with a prolific quarterback. He
• 3:49
Speaker 1: had pretty much held all West Virginia State quarterback records
• 3:53
Speaker 1: until recently, you know, the offensive systems caught up.
• 3:57
Speaker 2: But just one of those.
• 3:58
Speaker 1: Guys who, just like I said, just brought that system
• 4:01
Speaker 1: and really pushed the envelope to make West Virginia move
• 4:05
Speaker 1: into you know, far as the future, as far as
• 4:08
Speaker 1: offensive football is concerned. So and I had a chance
• 4:11
Speaker 1: to sit up under him, I learned a lot. He
• 4:12
Speaker 1: coached me in the North South game. You know, I
• 4:16
Speaker 1: was around when he was at GW. So he was
• 4:18
Speaker 1: just like a really you know, offensive mind and just
• 4:22
Speaker 1: knew the position well. And I think it's one of
• 4:25
Speaker 1: those things when you look back at the history of
• 4:27
Speaker 1: West Virginia football, he was I think a turning point
• 4:31
Speaker 1: within it, you know, like I said, he just he
• 4:33
Speaker 1: pushed it forward. And obviously, you know, Roger Jefferson had
• 4:37
Speaker 1: just those prolific Charleston Hine Capitol teams and just had
• 4:41
Speaker 1: so much talent that he was able to, you know,
• 4:45
Speaker 1: you know, do a lot with that talent that he
• 4:47
Speaker 1: had there. And too, I'm going to follow up on
• 4:52
Speaker 1: Jefferson like, and I knew him really well, and he
• 5:02
Speaker 1: he was that kind of coach that you that you
• 5:05
Speaker 1: just would love to play for.
• 5:07
Speaker 2: He was just that kind of.
• 5:10
Speaker 1: That kind of guy, kind of tough, you know, demanded excellence,
• 5:15
Speaker 1: but you it was like one of those kind of
• 5:17
Speaker 1: situations where you wanted to give that away to him
• 5:23
Speaker 1: and and to me, I think when you take those two,
• 5:29
Speaker 1: they're they're they're totally somewhat different. But if you could
• 5:34
Speaker 1: take and merge those two together and put put it
• 5:37
Speaker 1: into somebody, you would have probably without a question, a
• 5:43
Speaker 1: great just the greatest coach ever man, And especially for
• 5:46
  Speaker 1: high school.
• 5:48
Speaker 2: I mean, I just think that there was just there was.
• 5:53
Speaker 1: A way that he could take the kids from Charleston
• 5:57
Speaker 1: and and and make them play and I won't even
• 6:01
Speaker 1: say make made them want to play right and play
• 6:04
  Speaker 1: and be great.
• 6:06
Speaker 5: And to me, whenever I read through this, and I'm
• 6:09
Speaker 5: thinking to myself, you know when consolidations happened between schools,
• 6:12
Speaker 5: especially rivalries, because I know Stonewall Jackson High School in
• 6:15
  Speaker 5: Charleston High.
• 6:16
Speaker 4: School, they were robberies big time.
• 6:18
Speaker 5: And to be able to blend those two team dynamics
• 6:22
Speaker 5: and win a state championship the very first year that
• 6:25
Speaker 5: they're consolidated together at Capital, to me, that's a feat
• 6:29
Speaker 5: that I don't know how often that happens, but it
• 6:32
Speaker 5: can happen that often.
• 6:33
  Speaker 4: I mean, that's pretty amazing.
• 6:34
Speaker 1: And I think like one of the things because I
• 6:37
Speaker 1: think maybe some people will say, well, he had all
• 6:39
Speaker 1: the talent with Trip, he did he had during those
• 6:43
Speaker 1: first probably ten years at Capitol. It's probably no more
• 6:45
Speaker 1: talent rich team in that era specifically. But I think,
• 6:50
Speaker 1: you know, you have to be able to manage talent, right,
• 6:53
Speaker 1: you have to discipline within the talent. So again, you
• 6:59
Speaker 1: had some guys on those teams, some real deal, you
• 7:02
Speaker 1: had a lot of NFL guys, a lot of D
• 7:03
Speaker 1: one guys, But you still have to have that head
• 7:07
Speaker 1: that can manage and and put those pieces together. And yeah,
• 7:12
  Speaker 1: and I was that's that's a very very valid point.
• 7:15
Speaker 1: And and that's the most meaningful piece is because sometimes
• 7:21
Speaker 1: people think that talent it's all you need, but talent can.
• 7:25
Speaker 2: Be a hassle. Talent. Yeah, you know, if.
• 7:29
  Speaker 1: You're if you're a coach, and you and you're and
• 7:32
Speaker 1: you've got a team full of stars. Every star wants
• 7:36
Speaker 1: to be the top star. How do you manage that?
• 7:40
Speaker 1: How do you coordinate that and put it into team
• 7:45
Speaker 1: and let everybody be able to celebrate the championship. And
• 7:49
Speaker 1: some guys are gonna get this, you know, they can
• 7:52
Speaker 1: get the top awards and all that kind of stuff,
• 7:54
Speaker 1: But we're winning championships. And I think when you can
• 7:57
Speaker 1: come together enough to win a championship. I'm okay with
• 8:00
Speaker 1: Hollis being the player of the year. You know, I
• 8:03
Speaker 1: ain't going to be mad that I didn't get in
• 8:05
Speaker 1: the ball enough to get that. And for me, like
• 8:07
Speaker 1: a lot of those early teams, those excuse me, those
• 8:09
Speaker 1: early Capitol High school teams, they were like sentimental for
• 8:12
Speaker 1: me because those were my.
• 8:14
Speaker 2: First like football heroes.
• 8:15
Speaker 1: Like right, like I played with some of those guys
• 8:18
Speaker 1: that were older, like you know, playing with them and
• 8:21
Speaker 1: not playing with them, but playing on the same team
• 8:23
Speaker 1: in little league football. And then you know, I would
• 8:25
Speaker 1: go to Capitol High School football games like and I
• 8:29
Speaker 1: was one. You know, when you're young, you have the
• 8:32
Speaker 1: game playing, but I would be sitting watching the game
• 8:35
Speaker 1: and I can just remember a lot of those guys,
• 8:37
Speaker 1: you know, Varyon cunneyham Buster.
• 8:39
Speaker 2: Brian and all those guys.
• 8:41
Speaker 1: And I remember Bully all those guys just watching them
• 8:43
Speaker 1: and those were like, wow, those were superstars to me.
• 8:46
Speaker 1: So you know, those those were definitely sentimental times. That
• 8:49
Speaker 1: was kind of like my first you know, being up
• 8:52
Speaker 1: close and personal. Those I would just remember those. I
• 8:55
Speaker 1: have fond memories of those days watching early Capitol High football.
• 8:58
Speaker 5: I want to get back to coach town Just for
• 9:00
Speaker 5: a minute, guys and you just you've alluded about his
• 9:03
Speaker 5: innovative offensive mind and the things that he was able
• 9:07
Speaker 5: to accomplish at the high school level with with the offense.
• 9:10
Speaker 5: So my question for you both is how does a
• 9:14
Speaker 5: coach be able to bring such a prolific offense, such
• 9:19
Speaker 5: a such a creative offense and water it down enough
• 9:22
Speaker 5: to the high school level where you have it's not
• 9:24
Speaker 5: like a collegiate level of talent, because those guys have
• 9:27
Speaker 5: played high school ball. They have a fundamental understanding of offense.
• 9:31
Speaker 5: But how do you think he was able to mold
• 9:34
Speaker 5: those kids to be able to implement the offense he
• 9:37
  Speaker 5: wanted them to.
• 9:37
Speaker 1: I think like that's a good question. Again, he was
• 9:40
Speaker 1: in coach Tinsley, he played with a quarterback in sat office.
• 9:42
Speaker 1: Then he played he was a quarterback of Appalachian State.
• 9:45
Speaker 1: So I think the thing is is like number one,
• 9:48
Speaker 1: I think you know, you can challenge kids in middle school,
• 9:53
Speaker 1: high school, you can challenge them enough where and if
• 9:55
Speaker 1: you challenge them, they'll pick it up. But specifically just
• 9:58
Speaker 1: going to the nuance how you do it, I think
• 10:00
Speaker 1: the verbage is one. So in college, you know it
• 10:04
Speaker 1: may take me ten or fifteen seconds to call off
• 10:06
Speaker 1: a play because I'm calling off the different signens, I'm calling,
• 10:09
Speaker 1: blocking assignments, I'm calling you know, I may be not
• 10:12
Speaker 1: I may even call two or three plays at one time. Right,
• 10:15
Speaker 1: So the verbiage till you simplify the verbage one. And
• 10:18
Speaker 1: then from a quarterback perspective, I think you you start
• 10:23
Speaker 1: with like half field reads. You start with whether I'm
• 10:25
Speaker 1: reading the right side, the middle or the left, and
• 10:27
Speaker 1: then I can, you know, I can start going from
• 10:30
Speaker 1: the safety to my read, and I can start eventually
• 10:34
Speaker 1: open it up to full reads and then from there,
• 10:37
Speaker 1: you know, when you're talking about option routes and different
• 10:40
Speaker 1: things of that nature. It's just working. And I used
• 10:43
Speaker 1: to love the way they would practice. I mean they
• 10:44
Speaker 1: would practice music full blast, so they would turn to
• 10:47
Speaker 1: the stadium music, and so they have practice in loud,
• 10:50
Speaker 1: noisy environments and you and like you could just tell
• 10:54
Speaker 1: like playing against them, because I played against j R.
• 10:57
Speaker 1: House and those Nightel teams off my high school years,
• 11:01
Speaker 1: and they were just so far as head they were
• 11:03
Speaker 1: making calls on the field. He had to hand signals
• 11:06
Speaker 1: flowing when a lot of teams were still running players
• 11:08
Speaker 1: in and out. So it was just like like I said,
• 11:11
Speaker 1: if you put it in front of them, they'll pick
• 11:13
Speaker 1: it up. I think sometimes we underestimate kids. And I
• 11:16
Speaker 1: one hundred percent agree on all of that, Hollis. And
• 11:20
Speaker 1: I'll add to it's it's teaching, and call it teaching,
• 11:26
Speaker 1: call it coaching. He had the ability to be able
• 11:31
Speaker 1: to talk that verbiage to the kids so where they
• 11:36
  Speaker 1: could get it.
• 11:38
Speaker 2: Sometimes coaches can. You can.
• 11:40
Speaker 1: You can over coach to a to a degree, and
• 11:43
Speaker 1: they don't understand, you know, and until you tell them
• 11:48
Speaker 1: in a way that they can understand it, like it's like,
• 11:50
Speaker 1: oh the light's on, I get that. And then and
• 11:54
Speaker 1: think about that from a and Hollis, you you know
• 11:57
Speaker 1: this way better than I do. When you can talk
• 12:00
Speaker 1: to your quarterback and you can talk to him with
• 12:03
Speaker 1: that kind of language that you because you're not talking
• 12:07
Speaker 1: to him trying to get him to understand what you're saying.
• 12:09
Speaker 1: You're giving him the burbies that that you know.
• 12:12
  Speaker 2: In your head.
• 12:13
Speaker 1: And now what you've done is you've taught him. He's
• 12:16
Speaker 1: hearing that. He can see that in his head. So
• 12:19
Speaker 1: now when he's running out on the field with that call,
• 12:22
Speaker 1: he's going to be out there.
• 12:24
  Speaker 2: He already knows.
• 12:25
Speaker 1: And plus, man, I mean you got to understand during
• 12:28
Speaker 1: the mid nineties, and again this is something he did
• 12:30
Speaker 1: at State earlier, but I'm just talking about bringing it
• 12:32
Speaker 1: to high school. In the mid nineties, everybody in the
• 12:35
Speaker 1: MAMAS is run based office. So you're running a veer,
• 12:38
Speaker 1: you're running an option, you're running somethings, still running wishbones
• 12:42
  Speaker 1: or wing teeth.
• 12:43
Speaker 2: That's what everybody was running.
• 12:45
Speaker 1: So I couldn't I mean, those kids, man, you going
• 12:48
Speaker 1: up and down the field, You're scoring sixty seventy points
• 12:50
Speaker 1: a game. You're moving lightning fast, no huddle, let's not
• 12:53
Speaker 1: forget that. That office was so fun to watch. I
• 12:59
Speaker 1: couldn't imagine. And as being a quarterback, we were all
• 13:02
Speaker 1: envious because we want to throw the ball forty and
• 13:04
Speaker 1: fifty times a game with the with the with that many,
• 13:07
Speaker 1: with that wide open space. So I would imagine, you know,
• 13:10
Speaker 1: if you talk to maybe some of the the former players,
• 13:13
Speaker 1: they would they probably just had a ball running at all.
• 13:15
Speaker 1: And I bet you if you look, if you find
• 13:17
Speaker 1: a player who played against those teams, they're like, because again,
• 13:24
Speaker 1: you know, if I'm a corner in at during that time,
• 13:29
Speaker 1: what am I thinking about run?
• 13:30
Speaker 2: I'm thinking about run, tackling and tackling.
• 13:33
Speaker 1: There might be six or seven throws maybe in the game,
• 13:36
Speaker 1: but in his system, all of a sudden, I've got
• 13:40
Speaker 1: to I gotta change my whole mindset and maybe just
• 13:44
  Speaker 1: for one game.
• 13:45
Speaker 2: And that's how it was.
• 13:46
Speaker 1: Yeah, because when he when he changed it, it was
• 13:49
Speaker 1: just him. Everybody else is like looking at him, like
• 13:51
Speaker 1: thinking he's crazy. But until he started putting up forties
• 13:54
  Speaker 1: and fifties.
• 13:55
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, he made everything.
• 13:59
Speaker 1: And I'm saying I'm not going to necessarily speak for
• 14:02
Speaker 1: the whole state, but I'm saying here in Kanak County,
• 14:04
Speaker 1: maybe even the southern hand of the state, he made
• 14:06
Speaker 1: everybody like basically change their offense, everybody and everybody, everybody
• 14:09
Speaker 1: in defense, so everybody, everybody had to do a different eup.
• 14:13
Speaker 1: It was just two It was it was it looked good.
• 14:17
Speaker 1: That was the other thing. It looked good, and everybody
• 14:20
  Speaker 1: loves points.
• 14:21
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 14:22
Speaker 5: Okay, well, we wanted to touch that touch in on
• 14:26
Speaker 5: that audience, and you know, our condolences to the family,
• 14:29
Speaker 5: and they both surely will be missed in the community.
• 14:33
Speaker 5: So so guys, let's move on to something that we
• 14:40
Speaker 5: just wrapped up yesterday with an exciting finale game Breakfast
• 14:46
Speaker 5: Saw Breakfast Hockey. I should say, did you guys watch
• 14:50
Speaker 5: the hockey, the men's hockey game yesterday morning?
• 14:53
  Speaker 2: No? I yeah, I seen.
• 14:57
Speaker 1: I had it on and I instantly kind of just
• 15:02
Speaker 1: turned away from it. But my history, okay, my history
• 15:07
Speaker 1: in in that is I was I was in Minnesota,
• 15:12
Speaker 1: and of course you know they they have a hockey team,
• 15:16
Speaker 1: and I have I had an agent who was like,
• 15:19
Speaker 1: you know, he loved it, and so he wanted to
• 15:22
Speaker 1: take me to it. Boy, So I'm like, hockey what, like,
• 15:28
Speaker 1: you know what do they score touchdowns in there? And
• 15:34
Speaker 1: so I so I go, have you ever been to?
• 15:39
Speaker 2: Yes, hockey is phenomenal.
• 15:41
  Speaker 4: It's I love it. I've been to one and I.
• 15:45
Speaker 1: Had never seen guys on just that then, just that's
• 15:51
Speaker 1: been metal. Be able to be that athletic on ice.
• 15:57
Speaker 1: I'm looking at like, I can't help it.
• 15:59
  Speaker 2: I'm a DV.
• 15:59
Speaker 1: I'm I'm like watching their feet like and I'm like,
• 16:02
Speaker 1: what are they doing?
• 16:03
Speaker 2: How are they doing that?
• 16:04
Speaker 1: Somebody's got to break an ankle or tearing me up
• 16:07
  Speaker 1: or something.
• 16:08
  Speaker 2: And it's just.
• 16:10
Speaker 5: So athletic and they're not even thinking about large.
• 16:14
Speaker 2: They don't even think about it.
• 16:16
Speaker 1: They're going backwards, sitting there, going backwards and not even thinking.
• 16:20
Speaker 1: And that's the thing, like a lot of sports TV
• 16:22
Speaker 1: just doesn't. You can't really capture it on TV. Because
• 16:25
Speaker 1: I would say the same thing about soccer, high level soccer,
• 16:27
  Speaker 1: high level hockey.
• 16:29
Speaker 2: You have to baseball. You gotta go.
• 16:32
Speaker 1: And if you can go, man, i'm telling you you'll
• 16:35
Speaker 1: you'll become a fan. No, I'll challenge you just for
• 16:40
Speaker 1: me because I agree with you and all that.
• 16:43
  Speaker 2: I saw.
• 16:44
Speaker 1: I got a chance to see the Twins play. Two
• 16:49
Speaker 1: things that I realized me being scared of the ball
• 16:54
  Speaker 1: was consistent.
• 16:54
  Speaker 2: I was.
• 16:55
Speaker 1: I was as I looked at as I thought about
• 16:59
Speaker 1: being a bad I was like.
• 17:00
Speaker 4: He just say that out loud.
• 17:02
  Speaker 2: I'm proud of it. I didn't like.
• 17:08
Speaker 1: I didn't like, you know, like when you started moving
• 17:11
Speaker 1: up from little league, you know, to I don't know,
• 17:15
Speaker 1: ten or eleven. The ball was too fast for me.
• 17:17
Speaker 1: I was scared of the ball, that was my thing.
• 17:19
Speaker 1: I was scared of the ball as a batter, so
• 17:22
  Speaker 1: that so I didn't want to bat. I didn't want
• 17:24
Speaker 1: to play first base because I didn't want the ball
• 17:26
Speaker 1: coming to play. No, because every ball is coming to you.
• 17:31
Speaker 1: I didn't want to play third base because you hit
• 17:33
Speaker 1: the line drive down there, second and short.
• 17:35
Speaker 4: I just didn't want to play.
• 17:36
Speaker 6: It sounds like sort of figure out. I can't figure out,
• 17:40
Speaker 6: like the Duk Way at best. No, because there's a
• 17:47
Speaker 6: chance that they'll hit one there. And if they know
• 17:50
Speaker 6: I'm over there and left field, they're hitting there.
• 17:52
  Speaker 4: Oh my god.
• 17:53
Speaker 1: I just I just was so scared of baseball. And
• 17:55
Speaker 1: I had a buddy, Jimmy Harper. This is how I
• 17:59
Speaker 1: I mean, I remember the name, got hitting them back.
• 18:02
Speaker 1: He was playing for the Tigers, and he got hitting
• 18:05
Speaker 1: the back. And after the game he showed me like
• 18:11
Speaker 1: like the bruise and hallis I swear I could see
• 18:16
Speaker 1: the laces of the ball. I was like, if I
• 18:21
Speaker 1: could have asked the coach, if I had enough courage
• 18:23
Speaker 1: to ask the coach, do I have to back? Can
• 18:25
Speaker 1: I playing not back? I would have man, and I'm
• 18:28
Speaker 1: done just running the basis. Just let me run the basis.
• 18:32
Speaker 1: Man a running for everybody.
• 18:34
Speaker 5: Well, now that Carl's finished his baseball horror story, Uh, Matt,
• 18:39
Speaker 5: do we have a clip from the hockey game yesterday.
• 18:41
Speaker 4: Look at these guys back on track.
• 18:45
Speaker 2: Man, it's wretch track.
• 18:47
Speaker 1: Es pokes her rider Paul, but I faced with lumpers,
• 18:53
Speaker 1: walk a coss of coppers.
• 18:55
Speaker 6: Jack Hugh sweat check the gold and gone for the
• 18:58
  Speaker 6: darned States.
• 19:02
Speaker 2: For the first time. Ship stuff gad Doc in the
• 19:06
Speaker 2: gut of States takes the goal.
• 19:09
Speaker 5: You see what you guys missed. I was in my pajamas.
• 19:17
Speaker 5: I watched the whole thing and it was it was exciting.
• 19:19
Speaker 2: And the women won too, right, so we doubled up.
• 19:22
Speaker 2: So this is his story.
• 19:23
Speaker 4: It was the first.
• 19:24
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's history. Yeah.
• 19:26
Speaker 1: So it's it's like like I said, the Winter Olympics
• 19:28
Speaker 1: was fun, and you know, like I said, I'm proud
• 19:31
Speaker 1: of the USA. This is the first time in a
• 19:33
Speaker 1: long time. So it's a good day.
• 19:35
Speaker 2: And then it's doesn't it kind of show that.
• 19:39
Speaker 1: Sports as a whole, I'm gonna say in the United States,
• 19:43
Speaker 1: because this is where we are, it's just getting better
• 19:46
Speaker 1: in everywhere, you know, every sport. The talent level is
• 19:50
Speaker 1: just getting better and better and better year after year
• 19:54
  Speaker 1: after year.
• 19:55
Speaker 4: You know, I mean, we earned let's see the gold medals.
• 19:58
Speaker 5: I think this time the count this was the best
• 20:01
Speaker 5: ever performance at the Winter Olympics with I think it
• 20:04
Speaker 5: was twelve gold medals.
• 20:06
Speaker 2: Who was the lead Norway?
• 20:07
Speaker 5: Norway dominated with eighteen, so we weren't too far off
• 20:10
  Speaker 5: the lead.
• 20:11
  Speaker 2: How about overall?
• 20:13
Speaker 5: Don't know that, but I do know what's so, oh sorry,
• 20:17
Speaker 5: thirty three overall? Yeah, so you know that that oh
• 20:21
  Speaker 5: total metal count.
• 20:22
  Speaker 4: Sorry about that.
• 20:23
Speaker 5: I read it wrong, man, Thank you for correcting me.
• 20:24
  Speaker 5: But yeah, I mean that's that's not that's not bad.
• 20:27
Speaker 2: Yeah, we did well.
• 20:28
Speaker 1: And like I said, those Olympic sports, man, I mean
• 20:30
Speaker 1: I was watching the like the Bob sledyon, I was
• 20:33
Speaker 1: watching the slalom, like when you're going down the hill,
• 20:36
Speaker 1: going around the flags. It was just, man, I'm telling
• 20:40
Speaker 1: you just when you talk about like that, just different
• 20:42
Speaker 1: level of athleticism, and it's like I always appreciate that,
• 20:46
Speaker 1: whether you know it's curling or whatever, figure skating or
• 20:49
Speaker 1: whatever the sport is, Like I just appreciate just that
• 20:52
Speaker 1: different athleticism. And so one of those things I wish
• 20:56
Speaker 1: like we would have to just have the chance to
• 20:57
Speaker 1: see it more, you know what I mean, Like just
• 21:00
  Speaker 1: have the chance.
• 21:00
Speaker 2: To like go and like actually witnesses and I like that.
• 21:03
  Speaker 2: I like that.
• 21:04
Speaker 1: You said that because to to truly appreciate what that
• 21:09
Speaker 1: skill set is is to be Yeah, it's way different
• 21:14
Speaker 1: in person. And you know that's why everybody kind of
• 21:16
Speaker 1: knows football, basketball and all those kind of things. But man,
• 21:22
Speaker 1: you know some some of those Olympic sports is Man,
• 21:26
  Speaker 1: it's it's it takes you.
• 21:28
  Speaker 2: It's got to be a.
• 21:29
Speaker 1: Ton of work and it's and some of that, and
• 21:32
Speaker 1: you got to be fearless and some of those what's
• 21:35
Speaker 1: de luge, like you got to be fearless, the the
• 21:38
Speaker 1: like going down to halfpipe doing a snowboarding thing like
• 21:41
Speaker 1: you like, not only do you have to have athleticism
• 21:44
Speaker 1: skills set, it's got to be like a certain level
• 21:46
Speaker 1: of fear fearlessness because because if you if you do
• 21:50
Speaker 1: you're coming down skin and you fall going eighty Yes,
• 21:56
Speaker 1: I'm not thinking about going going back up to the
• 21:59
Speaker 1: top and do it that again. That just like you
• 22:02
Speaker 1: got to be so comfortable in yourself that you're saying, Okay,
• 22:06
Speaker 1: well this happened. That's why I fail. But you know,
• 22:08
Speaker 1: so I'm done with that and then to go back
• 22:10
Speaker 1: and let me do it again. I don't think I
• 22:13
Speaker 1: got that in me.
• 22:15
  Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean that's a that's a whole different drive
• 22:17
Speaker 5: to me. I mean, you you not only have to
• 22:19
Speaker 5: be dedicated athletically and mentally, but you have to just
• 22:23
Speaker 5: like you said, no fear, you have to go out there.
• 22:26
Speaker 1: And just how do you get there in a sport
• 22:28
Speaker 1: where you may not like you're not probably gonna make
• 22:30
Speaker 1: millions just from doing a sport, right you want to medal?
• 22:33
Speaker 2: Yeah, you want to medal.
• 22:34
Speaker 1: You might get some money off endorsements, but you're not
• 22:36
Speaker 1: going to be like this like a football basketball player.
• 22:39
Speaker 1: You're not going to be ultra wealthy, you know, just
• 22:41
Speaker 1: playing a sport and you're and you're doing this every
• 22:44
Speaker 1: four years, yeah, you know you. I mean the goal
• 22:47
Speaker 1: is is every four years you might be competing world
• 22:51
Speaker 1: World Championships and all that kind of stuff. But like
• 22:56
Speaker 1: to me, I always kind of wonder, like when is
• 22:59
Speaker 1: it that you know that that's where you are, Like
• 23:04
Speaker 1: you're you're in the I know that what the clock
• 23:06
Speaker 1: says and all that kind of stuff, but man, building
• 23:09
Speaker 1: to that, like how do you like, how do you.
• 23:11
Speaker 2: Actually build yourself to Olympic gold?
• 23:15
Speaker 5: I mean you have to train the whole time between Olympics.
• 23:19
Speaker 5: I would think and and then that goes back to
• 23:21
Speaker 5: your point, Hollis. I mean, financially, you have to have sponsors,
• 23:24
Speaker 5: you have to have people that are picking up the
• 23:26
Speaker 5: tab in order for you to train. You're not making
• 23:28
Speaker 5: any money for personal gain at that point. You're just
• 23:31
Speaker 5: trying to get ready for the Olympics to win possibly
• 23:34
Speaker 5: a medal. So it's not financial, financially lucrative.
• 23:38
Speaker 1: And how would hit you if you win? You might
• 23:41
Speaker 1: get some you might get some endorsements.
• 23:42
Speaker 4: And all that kind of stuff, but not in training.
• 23:44
Speaker 5: But not in training, And that's four years and then
• 23:48
Speaker 5: and then you think about the fear part, did you
• 23:50
Speaker 5: I mean, Lindsay is it Lindsay what's her name, Lindsey Vonn, Sorry,
• 23:55
Speaker 5: Lindsay Vaughn. Uh, it came out, uh just recently in
• 23:58
Speaker 5: the past day or so, that that when she broke
• 24:01
Speaker 5: her leg in that accident, it was catastrophic, she almost
• 24:04
Speaker 5: lost her leg. They almost had to amputate her leg.
• 24:07
Speaker 5: So that those details are coming out out, So that
• 24:09
Speaker 5: just proves your point that you know, anything can happen.
• 24:12
Speaker 5: I mean, these these are very dangerous sports a lot
• 24:14
Speaker 5: of these athletes participate.
• 24:15
Speaker 1: In and and I don't even make the case it's
• 24:18
Speaker 1: the speed. Yes, it's the speed of all of the
• 24:22
Speaker 1: all of those things. And whether or not you are
• 24:26
Speaker 1: falling right or coming off of a sled. It you're
• 24:32
Speaker 1: at like a top speed with nothing around you, nothing
• 24:36
Speaker 1: to catch you, just you, you mean, and the and
• 24:40
Speaker 1: the con and and i'most say, concrete snow and you're
• 24:46
Speaker 1: falling on that You're I I mean to me, that
• 24:50
Speaker 1: is ununimaginable for me, Like I couldn't if I feel
• 24:54
Speaker 1: one time came off a sled one time. Man, I'm like, hey,
• 24:57
Speaker 1: this is probably not me. I'm probably not I'm probably
• 25:00
Speaker 1: not the guy for this.
• 25:01
Speaker 5: Back to the football stadium. Well that was that was
• 25:09
Speaker 5: a great story, the story of the hockey team. There
• 25:12
Speaker 5: were also some other stories, you know, some were kind
• 25:15
Speaker 5: of controversial. So I wanted to bring one up that
• 25:17
Speaker 5: that's sort of controversial, and I have a clip for
• 25:20
  Speaker 5: that too.
• 25:21
Speaker 4: Can you can you play that clip?
• 25:22
  Speaker 2: Mat?
• 25:23
Speaker 1: Also, do you see these as two silvers gained or
• 25:26
  Speaker 1: two goals lost?
• 25:29
Speaker 7: I'm the most decorated free skier, female free skier in history.
• 25:32
Speaker 7: I think that's an answer in and of itself. How
• 25:36
Speaker 7: do I say this? Winning a medal at the Olympics
• 25:40
Speaker 7: is a life changing experience for every athlete. Doing it
• 25:43
Speaker 7: five times is exponentially harder because every medal is equally
• 25:47
Speaker 7: hard for me, but everybody else's expectations rise, right, and
• 25:50
Speaker 7: so the two medals lost situation, to be quite frank
• 25:55
Speaker 7: with you, I think is kind of a ridiculous perspective
• 25:57
Speaker 7: to take. I'm showcasing my best I'm doing things that
• 26:02
Speaker 7: quite literally have never been done before, and so I
• 26:04
Speaker 7: think that is more than good enough.
• 26:06
Speaker 5: But okay, So the voice you just heard that was
• 26:10
Speaker 5: freestyle skier Ailien Goo, and she obviously is a very confident,
• 26:18
Speaker 5: very confident lady. The reason I played the clip, I
• 26:21
Speaker 5: mean there's been talk about, you know, of course, the
• 26:24
Speaker 5: way that she handles the press. She is very straightforward.
• 26:27
Speaker 5: She's very comfortable in her own skin, so to speak,
• 26:31
Speaker 5: and sometimes her attitude comes across a little a little
• 26:35
Speaker 5: abrasive when she's addressed in the media. But the reason
• 26:38
Speaker 5: that we're going to talk a little more deeply about
• 26:41
Speaker 5: her is because of she is not she was not
• 26:45
Speaker 5: an athlete competing for the United States, although she was.
• 26:50
Speaker 4: She was she was born here.
• 26:53
Speaker 5: She her mom was born in Beijing, and she at
• 26:59
Speaker 5: age fifteen decided to represent China instead of the United States. Okay,
• 27:03
Speaker 5: so this has been a this has been a back
• 27:05
Speaker 5: and forth issue, and I wanted your thoughts on the
• 27:07
Speaker 5: fact that she decided to represent China instead of the US.
• 27:12
Speaker 1: Okay, before before that, before that, I want to I
• 27:15
Speaker 1: want to comment on her.
• 27:19
  Speaker 2: Her conversation.
• 27:20
  Speaker 4: Okay.
• 27:22
Speaker 2: One of the things that.
• 27:25
Speaker 1: And and Ill you are you sterling as an example, Oh,
• 27:28
Speaker 1: somebody like that who when you hear her say all
• 27:33
Speaker 1: the things that she's saying, it comes across naturally instantly arrogant.
• 27:39
Speaker 2: But when you when you are, when when you know,
• 27:44
  Speaker 2: when you.
• 27:44
Speaker 1: Know that you are that person, You've won medals, You've
• 27:49
Speaker 1: won gold medals, you've scored a ton of touchdowns, you've
• 27:52
Speaker 1: been considered one of the best receivers ever in the league.
• 27:55
Speaker 1: When you get when that shows up, there's not an
• 27:58
Speaker 1: opportunity for you to ever talked down. Like if somebody's
• 28:02
  Speaker 1: asking a question, there's never gonna be a chance you're
• 28:05
Speaker 1: gonna make You're gonna try to make the case that
• 28:08
Speaker 1: I'm not good enough. You're gonna make the case to
• 28:11
Speaker 1: say how good you actually are. And I think I
• 28:15
Speaker 1: think I wanted to put that out there because I
• 28:18
Speaker 1: wanted to make because at the end of the day,
• 28:21
Speaker 1: when you know you're great, how do you do?
• 28:24
Speaker 2: How do you talk? You can't talk?
• 28:25
Speaker 1: Your listen man, that was a ridiculous question, and she
• 28:30
  Speaker 1: responded appropriately.
• 28:32
Speaker 8: I think, well, you know what she did after that,
• 28:34
Speaker 8: she got the gold medal on the halfpipe, because that
• 28:39
Speaker 8: question all took place before that.
• 28:41
Speaker 1: And it's a ridiculous question, like you literally just won
• 28:44
Speaker 1: two silver medals in the Olympics. That means for this
• 28:49
Speaker 1: period of time, you are the second best to do
• 28:52
Speaker 1: this in the world, not in a country, not in
• 28:56
Speaker 1: a sport, and for somebody just to ask, like for
• 28:59
Speaker 1: him to even ask that question, and I thought her
• 29:01
Speaker 1: response was more than appropriate. To me, it didn't come
• 29:04
Speaker 1: off arrogant, it didn't come off cocky. It came on
• 29:07
  Speaker 1: somebody like, that's a ridiculous question. That's a ridiculous statement.
• 29:10
Speaker 1: But I think a lot of people, a lot of
• 29:12
Speaker 1: people want they want a humble winner.
• 29:16
  Speaker 3: That was.
• 29:17
Speaker 1: To me hearing that, I felt like, to me, I'm like,
• 29:21
Speaker 1: she's saying exactly what she's supposed to say. And as
• 29:23
Speaker 1: far as her representing Japan China, as far as her
• 29:27
Speaker 1: representing China, man, I don't have no problem with that.
• 29:30
Speaker 1: We got athletes on the United States, whether it's the
• 29:34
Speaker 1: Summer Olympics, whether it's Winter Olympics. We got athletes from
• 29:37
Speaker 1: all around the world literally, So wherever you want to represent,
• 29:41
Speaker 1: I mean again, we would love to have you, obviously
• 29:43
Speaker 1: because you're one of the best and you want to
• 29:45
Speaker 1: go medals. But if again, it's not like she's she
• 29:49
Speaker 1: has ties over there, her mother's from there, so it's
• 29:52
Speaker 1: not as though she probably had dual citizenships and everything
• 29:55
  Speaker 1: like that.
• 29:56
  Speaker 4: So live here.
• 29:57
Speaker 5: She lives in the United States, She studies at Stanford,
• 30:01
  Speaker 5: she trains here.
• 30:02
  Speaker 2: No problem, I don't have a problem. Well, I kind
• 30:05
Speaker 2: of feel like I kind of feel like, if you're here,
• 30:08
Speaker 2: what would what would what? My question would me, why
• 30:10
  Speaker 2: would you? Then?
• 30:11
Speaker 1: If you're here and you're getting all your training here,
• 30:14
Speaker 1: you're going to school here, you're doing all that here,
• 30:17
Speaker 1: it's just hard for me to imagine you not wanting
• 30:20
Speaker 1: to represent where you are.
• 30:21
Speaker 8: But that's I know a couple of reasons. Why, well
• 30:23
Speaker 8: about seven million of them.
• 30:26
Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, it's being compensated. Well.
• 30:29
Speaker 8: She is the fourth highest paid female athlete in the world,
• 30:33
Speaker 8: regardless of sports. China is paying her seven million dollars
• 30:37
Speaker 8: a year to compete.
• 30:39
  Speaker 1: That's a question answer.
• 30:43
  Speaker 2: Made last year.
• 30:44
Speaker 8: Yeah, you said how much twenty three millions she made
• 30:47
  Speaker 8: last year.
• 30:47
Speaker 5: Some models, she's a very multip type. Yeah, she's very
• 30:53
  Speaker 5: young too.
• 30:55
  Speaker 2: Answer.
• 30:56
Speaker 5: I don't have a problem with her, with her the
• 30:58
Speaker 5: way she answered or handled the presses as well. I mean,
• 31:01
Speaker 5: if you can you know, if you can walk the walk,
• 31:03
Speaker 5: you can talk the talk. I mean, you can back
• 31:05
Speaker 5: up what you what you say. I don't have a
• 31:07
Speaker 5: problem with it at all. And the fact you know
• 31:09
Speaker 5: that she's got ties to China through through her mother,
• 31:12
Speaker 5: and you know, when she was younger, she she spent
• 31:14
Speaker 5: a lot of time there in the country, and you know,
• 31:17
  Speaker 5: so that's.
• 31:18
Speaker 2: Where I'm at long as you got a tie there.
• 31:20
Speaker 1: Now, if she was born American, just America, and she
• 31:24
Speaker 1: just and she just went over there just for the money,
• 31:26
Speaker 1: that's when I would have a problem with it. But
• 31:28
Speaker 1: like I said, she probably has some citizenship situation because
• 31:31
Speaker 1: her mom is from there, So no problem. And just
• 31:34
Speaker 1: going back briefly, we can move on. Yeah, I just
• 31:37
Speaker 1: when when the initial clip that you played when he
• 31:41
Speaker 1: had I think that's just a problem with the media
• 31:44
Speaker 1: such a ridiculous question, like why would you ask somebody
• 31:48
Speaker 1: that who just want a silver metal? And like like
• 31:51
Speaker 1: we just articulated these very difficult winter sports to take
• 31:55
Speaker 1: immense skill in training and concentration, and you're not going
• 31:58
Speaker 1: to get that claim at Leasta and you states like
• 32:00
Speaker 1: you would have maybe other places. So for us kind
• 32:05
Speaker 1: of being in the media, I would I would say
• 32:11
Speaker 1: that you know, when you sit around and you're trying
• 32:15
Speaker 1: to figure out what is the what is the appropriate
• 32:17
Speaker 1: question or what is the right question that that I
• 32:21
Speaker 1: think is going to get the best response for me.
• 32:25
Speaker 2: When you come up with that.
• 32:28
Speaker 1: That to him must have been a question like he thought, oh,
• 32:31
Speaker 1: this will force out a certain type of finanswer.
• 32:34
  Speaker 2: Okay, maybe you.
• 32:35
Speaker 1: Know he wanted he wanted he wanted this discussion. You know,
• 32:41
Speaker 1: he wanted to have he wanted folks to have this
• 32:43
  Speaker 1: this conversation.
• 32:44
Speaker 2: But maybe he did his job.
• 32:47
Speaker 5: I mean she did say whenever this was her. She
• 32:50
Speaker 5: also was a part of the twenty twenty two Beijing
• 32:52
Speaker 5: Olympic Games, which is you know, that's where my mother
• 32:55
Speaker 5: was from. So that's when she joined the team, you know,
• 32:58
Speaker 5: the China team. But but when she did join this
• 33:01
Speaker 5: was the quote, and then we can move on, guys.
• 33:02
Speaker 5: But she she basically said, the opportunity to help inspire
• 33:06
Speaker 5: millions of young people where my mom was born during
• 33:10
Speaker 5: the twenty twenty two Beijing Olympic Games is one. Is
• 33:13
Speaker 5: they once in a lifetime opportunity with million dollars with
• 33:17
  Speaker 5: twenty Yeah, well that's that's.
• 33:19
Speaker 4: A good point as well.
• 33:28
Speaker 5: Gosh, okay, well we can wrap up the conversation of Olympics.
• 33:32
Speaker 5: This is more of an inspirational type of type of
• 33:36
Speaker 5: angle when we're looking at the Winter Olympics and we're
• 33:39
Speaker 5: going to talk about and you guys have probably heard
• 33:41
Speaker 5: of her. It was the women's uh figure skating women's
• 33:47
Speaker 5: single figure skating event and the athlete's name is Alissa Liu,
• 33:52
Speaker 5: and she won gold and it was historic. Now she
• 33:56
Speaker 5: also has ties to China, but she is a part
• 33:59
Speaker 5: of the United States Olympic team. Okay, so there's been
• 34:02
Speaker 5: some comparisons between her and the other young lady we
• 34:07
Speaker 5: spoke of. But anyway, so she made history. She was
• 34:11
Speaker 5: the first American woman to win an individual Olympic gold
• 34:14
Speaker 5: in twenty four years. So that's pretty impressive, right. She
• 34:18
Speaker 5: took a retirement this was the big conversation, and I
• 34:21
Speaker 5: want this is the part I really want you guys
• 34:23
Speaker 5: to focus on. So she took retirement, a two year
• 34:26
Speaker 5: retirement after she was a teenage sensation, but then she
• 34:30
Speaker 5: came back to be a part of this Olympic team
• 34:33
Speaker 5: with an ultimatum. She wanted complete control, artistic control of
• 34:40
Speaker 5: her show. She wanted to be able to pick out
• 34:42
Speaker 5: her costumes, she wanted the music. She wanted complete you know,
• 34:47
Speaker 5: oversight of what was going on on the ice. So
• 34:50
Speaker 5: is that something you think an athlete should be able
• 34:53
Speaker 5: to do, even at the Olympic level.
• 34:55
Speaker 2: Yeah, well that's actually that.
• 34:57
Speaker 1: First of all, you know, figure skating, like I love
• 35:00
Speaker 1: watching figure skating is so athletic and so but I
• 35:03
Speaker 1: think just from the story that you just told, like
• 35:06
Speaker 1: her said, like you said, her being a kid, teen sensation,
• 35:11
Speaker 1: she probably was so controlled. You know, her schedule was defined,
• 35:15
Speaker 1: what you eat, what you wear, that everything was dictated,
• 35:18
Speaker 1: because if you're doing a sport like that, you gotta
• 35:20
Speaker 1: be on it, like you don't have time. You can't
• 35:22
Speaker 1: make mistakes when you're up in the ear air doing
• 35:25
Speaker 1: twisting turns and flips and all that stuff. So I
• 35:28
Speaker 1: would imagine that retirement gave her the space she needed
• 35:32
Speaker 1: to say, Hey, if.
• 35:33
Speaker 2: I come back, I'm doing it my way.
• 35:35
Speaker 1: I'm not being controlled by anybody, and the results are
• 35:39
Speaker 1: what they are paid off, so more prior to her. Yeah,
• 35:42
Speaker 1: I think I think it's really hard to challenge her
• 35:46
Speaker 1: with the success that she's had, right and when you
• 35:52
Speaker 1: what can I actually what can I actually bring her
• 35:55
Speaker 1: that she might not already know.
• 35:58
  Speaker 2: I mean, you know, I mean, but I don't think
• 36:00
Speaker 2: it's about to me.
• 36:01
Speaker 1: The result is just a byproduct of her I think
• 36:05
Speaker 1: she needed and I think athletes a lot of times
• 36:08
Speaker 1: you need that space just to say, hey, I need
• 36:10
Speaker 1: to do it my way.
• 36:11
  Speaker 2: Now.
• 36:11
Speaker 1: I've listened to people for my entire life life. So
• 36:15
Speaker 1: whatever the result is, it is. But I want the
• 36:18
Speaker 1: opportunity to do it my way, because now if I fail,
• 36:21
Speaker 1: I did it my way. I'm not listening to you.
• 36:23
Speaker 1: So it's like I can take the failure like and
• 36:26
  Speaker 1: and I'll I'll give a like a basketball analogy to
• 36:31
Speaker 1: to kind of justify your your point. You can only
• 36:37
Speaker 1: teach me. You can only coach me to a certain degree,
• 36:40
Speaker 1: and then if I become good enough that I can
• 36:44
Speaker 1: maybe make it to the NBA, got drafted in the
• 36:47
Speaker 1: NBA somewhere, I have to take over my skill set.
• 36:52
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I have to. I have to take you,
• 36:56
Speaker 2: help me get you, help me get to a space.
• 37:00
  Speaker 1: Then there's there's a time where I have to be
• 37:03
Speaker 1: the one to take those extra shots, make those extra moves,
• 37:08
Speaker 1: and and try to figure out, Now, what kind of
• 37:10
Speaker 1: player am I going to be? And I think that's
• 37:14
  Speaker 1: I think that's every player, male, female, And I don't
• 37:18
  Speaker 1: even care what the sport is. There's a there's a
• 37:20
Speaker 1: place and say, let's just call it a trainer. You
• 37:23
Speaker 1: got a trainer. That trainer can train you to a degree,
• 37:27
Speaker 1: and then there's some place at some point, once he
• 37:31
Speaker 1: or she's gotten you to this place, you have to
• 37:34
Speaker 1: all of a sudden find your Yeah, because you can't
• 37:37
Speaker 1: do it the way. It's not chalkboard like. You can't
• 37:41
Speaker 1: do it all the time chalk board type. You have
• 37:44
Speaker 1: to create it yourself. And I think every athlete gets
• 37:47
Speaker 1: to that point. Every great I want to say every athlete,
• 37:49
Speaker 1: but I think every great athlete had like you, you
• 37:51
Speaker 1: have no choice but to get that. I'm even like
• 37:53
Speaker 1: you look at somebody like Tom Brady when he created
• 37:55
Speaker 1: the T TB twelve system and all the things he
• 37:58
Speaker 1: was doing with his body, and he was doing everything
• 38:01
Speaker 1: contradictory to probably what everybody thought he should be doing
• 38:04
Speaker 1: at the age in his career. Tom Brady changed the
• 38:07
Speaker 1: way he walked later and this he's like darning are
• 38:10
Speaker 1: a forty year old man and literally changed the way
• 38:13
Speaker 1: he walked like because it was it was more athletically
• 38:17
Speaker 1: inclined to walk with your feet straight and not have
• 38:19
Speaker 1: the duck feet. Like if you watch a lot of people,
• 38:22
Speaker 1: they walk with the duck feet and not straight athleticism.
• 38:26
Speaker 1: You know, yeah, so, but but what I'm saying though,
• 38:30
Speaker 1: to your point, though, he took it over. And I
• 38:33
Speaker 1: think every great athlete has to do that more so
• 38:35
Speaker 1: more shout out to.
• 38:36
Speaker 2: Her and and and and I.
• 38:37
Speaker 1: And one of the things that I think is good
• 38:41
Speaker 1: about it and the and the other side being bad
• 38:45
Speaker 1: is the coach or whoever that other individual is shouldn't
• 38:49
Speaker 1: be fighting to Well, you're gonna you, You're gonna want
• 38:53
Speaker 1: to fight, like I said, if if you helped somebody
• 38:55
Speaker 1: get there, and it's like, man, come on, we can
• 38:57
Speaker 1: we could just do this together. And you know so
• 38:59
Speaker 1: you you because you competitive too. So what what did
• 39:02
Speaker 1: her coaches say, Is there anything?
• 39:03
Speaker 5: I mean, I guess they Yeah, they just let her
• 39:06
Speaker 5: have it. I mean they were probably just so glad
• 39:08
Speaker 5: to have her back. They are just like, go go
• 39:10
Speaker 5: for it, lady, if you think you know, and she
• 39:12
  Speaker 5: won goals.
• 39:14
Speaker 1: And in this system it makes sense that they have
• 39:18
Speaker 1: to back because it's the Olympics.
• 39:20
Speaker 5: I'm sure the trainers still had to say in the
• 39:23
Speaker 5: type of like, you know, there's certain critiquing, like moves
• 39:27
Speaker 5: that they have to be a part of their performance.
• 39:31
Speaker 1: Watching her, but everything's like, I'm gonna do it my way,
• 39:35
Speaker 1: but I need you yes, say yeah, yeah, so that's fair.
• 39:38
Speaker 5: And you know the difference between a sixteen year old
• 39:40
Speaker 5: and a twenty year old, I mean, you know, that's
• 39:42
Speaker 5: a difference between a child and an adult. So you know,
• 39:45
Speaker 5: she pretty much was ready to take over her life
• 39:47
Speaker 5: and say this is the way it's going to be done.
• 39:49
Speaker 1: And I'm glad they gave her the space to do
• 39:51
Speaker 1: that because a lot of times, you know, with our kids,
• 39:54
Speaker 1: particularly if you got that success early, sometimes if you
• 39:57
Speaker 1: don't give them the space they need, you know, they
• 39:59
Speaker 1: can example, yeah, that creates a problem, you know.
• 40:03
Speaker 5: And also after her performance. This was a little controversial
• 40:06
Speaker 5: as well. She had her own little little thing that
• 40:09
Speaker 5: she she said to the camera that that the camera
• 40:12
Speaker 5: picked up on like a hot mic, and she said
• 40:14
Speaker 5: that's After her performance was finished, she skated over to
• 40:17
Speaker 5: the camera and said, that's what I'm blank talking about.
• 40:21
Speaker 5: And so that that's that's kind of been a viral
• 40:23
Speaker 5: clip on social media.
• 40:25
Speaker 4: It is pretty cool.
• 40:26
Speaker 5: Well, yeah, you can fill in the blank, okay.
• 40:30
Speaker 1: And see and and and and again. I'll go back
• 40:32
Speaker 1: to the athlete that knows what they can do right, confident,
• 40:37
Speaker 1: the confidence in it. And I think if you're going
• 40:41
Speaker 1: to be great, there's some there. At some point in time,
• 40:44
Speaker 1: there has to be there has to be a realization
• 40:48
Speaker 1: of where are you.
• 40:51
Speaker 2: Have you done enough?
• 40:52
Speaker 1: Do you think you are that guy or that girl
• 40:56
Speaker 1: that you can be that great?
• 40:58
Speaker 2: And I think a lot of people fake that.
• 41:01
Speaker 4: I don't think you can fake it well, and you can't.
• 41:05
Speaker 2: To me, you can't fake it anyway.
• 41:07
Speaker 1: You can't fake it because when you play a game,
• 41:10
Speaker 1: if you're not showing out, then you're.
• 41:13
Speaker 2: Not the guy or the girl.
• 41:16
Speaker 1: Yeah, So trust me, you'll know when you're that person
• 41:21
Speaker 1: because you'll be in that situation. You you will be
• 41:24
Speaker 1: where everybody's looking for it. Everybody's expecting you to throw
• 41:27
Speaker 1: the touchdown past. Everybody's thinking that you're going to win
• 41:30
Speaker 1: the game for him. You got the shot, you got this,
• 41:33
Speaker 1: You got that, everybody's going to be expecting it coming
• 41:35
  Speaker 1: from you.
• 41:37
Speaker 2: Right, That's when you know you're that person.
• 41:39
  Speaker 4: That's when you've made it.
• 41:40
Speaker 2: That's when you made it.
• 41:41
Speaker 5: The expectation is there, it's already. It's not whether or
• 41:45
Speaker 5: not it's going to happen, is when it's going to happen.
• 41:47
  Speaker 1: Kobe Brown on the basketball court, there's there's there's they're
• 41:50
  Speaker 1: down too.
• 41:52
Speaker 2: Who's getting the ball? Who's taking that shot?
• 41:54
Speaker 1: You know he wants the ball. If I've got the ball,
• 41:57
Speaker 1: he's he's taking that from me. And he because he
• 42:00
Speaker 1: wants the ball, he wants to be able to be
• 42:02
Speaker 1: that person. That to me, and that's what I like
• 42:05
Speaker 1: about the Olympics as well. It is it is the
• 42:11
Speaker 1: belief in having a talent that is as good as
• 42:16
Speaker 1: anybody ever, right, I mean, think about that.
• 42:20
Speaker 2: How do you you can't ignore that to yourself?
• 42:22
Speaker 4: No, you know you can't take it. You make it.
• 42:26
Speaker 5: Not in the Olympics, there's too many high level athletes
• 42:29
  Speaker 5: against you, and.
• 42:31
Speaker 1: And and everybody's trying to do the same thing that
• 42:33
Speaker 1: you're doing. So it is that that that to me.
• 42:40
Speaker 4: Is well, there's there's one funny thing and I know
• 42:43
  Speaker 4: that that.
• 42:43
Speaker 5: I mean, Hollis is mentioned in our text threat how
• 42:46
Speaker 5: much of a curling fan he is.
• 42:48
Speaker 1: And so curling not on every for the last two weeks.
• 42:52
Speaker 1: Curling was on every single day.
• 42:55
Speaker 5: There it was the sport there's a cheating scandal exactly.
• 43:03
Speaker 4: It's just this is the headline.
• 43:05
Speaker 5: Canada's curling skip tells cheating accusers to get Olympic celebration
• 43:10
Speaker 5: burned into your break. So I guess it was Canada
• 43:15
Speaker 5: that got accused of matt do you know?
• 43:17
  Speaker 4: Help us?
• 43:19
Speaker 8: So all right, so they call this the gentleman's sport, right,
• 43:22
Speaker 8: it's supposed to be very amicable and you go and
• 43:25
Speaker 8: have beers after you're done, plane and everything. So when
• 43:29
Speaker 8: you push the stone down the ice, there's a handle
• 43:33
Speaker 8: on top and you're only allowed to touch that handle.
• 43:36
Speaker 8: But I guess the controversy is the Canadian is doing
• 43:40
Speaker 8: just a little finger.
• 43:41
Speaker 2: Push on the stone itself. The line right over the line. Yeah,
• 43:47
Speaker 2: what you're talking about they.
• 43:48
Speaker 8: Got into like a live heated four letter word match
• 43:52
Speaker 8: on live TV coverage of this because he got called
• 43:55
  Speaker 8: out for.
• 43:56
Speaker 1: It because you hold the hand, you hold the handle,
• 44:00
Speaker 1: and then you like you let the handle go before
• 44:02
Speaker 1: the line. So what he did he had to handle,
• 44:05
Speaker 1: let it go, and then he just his pointer fing
• 44:07
Speaker 1: he just pointed, he just pushed it a little bit
• 44:10
Speaker 1: right over the line.
• 44:11
Speaker 4: It's gonna be curling expert.
• 44:14
Speaker 1: It was literally literally on every single day for two weeks,
• 44:19
Speaker 1: Like I watched more curling then I probably watched Team
• 44:25
Speaker 1: Let's go, man, Charles right, my disc left.
• 44:30
Speaker 2: Let's go? Where do you even? Where do you even
• 44:33
Speaker 2: start that? I have no idea, like where, like where
• 44:36
Speaker 2: do you go? Like who has that? At a high school?
• 44:39
Speaker 8: I think they've got one up in Sandusky, Ohio.
• 44:43
Speaker 4: I don't think it's a thing in West Virginia at all.
• 44:45
Speaker 9: Is it's like, what's the what's the We got like
• 44:48
Speaker 9: two ice drinks in the whole, but what's the what's
• 44:50
Speaker 9: the what's what's the name of the sport at the bar?
• 44:53
Speaker 9: It has the sand over it and it just what's
• 44:56
  Speaker 9: what is that?
• 44:59
  Speaker 1: I know what you're talking, I don't know what. So
• 45:00
Speaker 1: that's kind of like a non ice version of like curl.
• 45:04
Speaker 1: It's a little bit like it, so kinda so you
• 45:07
Speaker 1: can practice that his whole body though, Yeah, well clearly,
• 45:11
Speaker 1: I don't know in West Virginia if that might not
• 45:13
  Speaker 1: be anybody's goal, I don't know.
• 45:15
Speaker 5: So we've learned two important things tonight about our our
• 45:18
Speaker 5: co hosts here that Curl is scared of baseball and
• 45:22
Speaker 5: Hollis is going to start a new career in curl.
• 45:28
Speaker 1: But the good thing about Curly no physicality, there's no physicality,
• 45:32
Speaker 1: is you got to get the broom.
• 45:34
  Speaker 2: You gotta gotta.
• 45:36
Speaker 4: Figure it out for me.
• 45:38
Speaker 1: You gotta get the broom. Sweep it, slow it down,
• 45:42
  Speaker 1: speed it up. I can't even know. I can't even
• 45:44
  Speaker 1: imagine him. I don't even see I can't even see
• 45:46
  Speaker 1: him watching.
• 45:47
Speaker 4: That every day watch it's relaxing.
• 45:51
Speaker 2: Every day it is.
• 45:53
Speaker 8: We had it on in the studio in there with
• 45:55
Speaker 8: Dave Weekly on Hotline every day too. I come in
• 45:58
Speaker 8: there for a segment be on the TV curling, Curling
• 46:02
  Speaker 8: and the stocks.
• 46:03
Speaker 1: Because with curling they got they have the women's, they
• 46:06
Speaker 1: have the men's and then they have the mix, so
• 46:09
  Speaker 1: it's it's three different events. So it's like it's literally,
• 46:12
Speaker 1: you know, they go through all the qualifiers and all that.
• 46:14
Speaker 2: So it's a bunch of things.
• 46:16
Speaker 5: So let's wrap up this conversation on the Winter Olympics
• 46:19
Speaker 5: of twenty twenty six. So what was your favorite favorite sport?
• 46:23
Speaker 5: Did you have one that that was particularly your most favorite?
• 46:26
Speaker 1: My favorite was the short downhill solemn. Oh my god,
• 46:32
Speaker 1: when I when I tell you, like, because it's the
• 46:35
Speaker 1: short hills, not the long hill. So, like I said,
• 46:37
Speaker 1: the solemn is they're they're like, you know, they're going
• 46:40
Speaker 1: down the hill and they're going around the flags. And
• 46:42
Speaker 1: with this one it's the parallel, so they're competing against one.
• 46:45
Speaker 1: So your competitors right besides you, so your and looks
• 46:49
Speaker 1: so when look look.
• 46:55
Speaker 2: But here's here's the thing though. Here's the thing though.
• 46:57
Speaker 1: So we were like I'm sitting watching it and I'm noticing, like,
• 47:01
Speaker 1: at least on my hand right here side the blue path,
• 47:04
Speaker 1: it's like faster. So we're we're sitting there watching them like, yeah,
• 47:07
Speaker 1: when you they're like even when they get to a point,
• 47:10
Speaker 1: then the red starts to pull away. Then with the
• 47:12
Speaker 1: blue side gets to a certain point, the ice excuse me,
• 47:15
Speaker 1: the snow gets slick or something. So every time they
• 47:17
Speaker 1: were pulling around and we noticing, like you know, when
• 47:20
Speaker 1: you're going around the flags, you're not just like sliding
• 47:23
Speaker 1: around them, You're like jump hop like basketball, like a
• 47:27
Speaker 1: jump up, so you're doing that, you're like jumping jumping.
• 47:31
Speaker 1: I'm telling you it was great, short, parallel, downhill, solid
• 47:37
Speaker 1: favorite Olympics. How did it sound again? Okay we have
• 47:44
Speaker 1: had break sounds, nothing else are great best, but I'm
• 47:51
Speaker 1: telling you do YouTube it well?
• 47:53
Speaker 4: What was your favorite? Carl? Real quick?
• 47:55
Speaker 1: I'm just just I just like the downhill scheme. I
• 47:58
  Speaker 1: don't know how to I don't I don't want to know.
• 48:01
Speaker 1: I don't want to try to go into the details
• 48:03
Speaker 1: of how that worked. I pull around and break.
• 48:05
Speaker 4: And almost the hockey. I like the men and women's hockey.
• 48:09
Speaker 4: I thought those were exciting.
• 48:10

• 48:24

• 48:25

• 48:27
Speaker 1: out there who's never been never been to it, been
• 48:31
Speaker 1: to a hockey match. You should see one. Go to
• 48:36
Speaker 1: high school. Even if you don't have check it, just
• 48:40
Speaker 1: go see it. It is so amazing and the skill
• 48:45
Speaker 1: set is just out of this world.
• 48:47
Speaker 4: And the sound you really don't get the sound.
• 48:52
Speaker 1: And I want to go see the Nailers two of Willing.
• 48:53
