- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. Mike
- 0:03Speaker 1: chris Pino joined by Luke Murray, the Yukon assistant. As
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Huskies get this MEETI bye week to work on
- 0:09Speaker 1: some stuff as he gets set to face Saint John's
- 0:13Speaker 1: at home Gamble Pavilion on Friday, and Coach, let's talk about,
- 0:18Speaker 1: you know, getting ready for teams when you have a
- 0:21Speaker 1: few extra days. It's not always the case. Normally you
- 0:25Speaker 1: have a couple of days maybe to kind of review
- 0:27Speaker 1: what they've been doing and looking at their tape and
- 0:30Speaker 1: try to formulate a game plan. This time, you have
- 0:32Speaker 1: a few extra days. How can that be helpful? I'm
- 0:36Speaker 1: going to assume the more time, the more in depth
- 0:39Speaker 1: you can get.
- 0:42Speaker 2: I think for us, mostly it's going to give us
- 0:44Speaker 2: an opportunity to rest up a little bit, you know,
- 0:46Speaker 2: and get some of our guys a little bit healthier.
- 0:49Speaker 3: That's kind of the main benefit that I see.
- 0:52Speaker 2: You know, our last couple of games, to Paul Xavier,
- 0:55Speaker 2: even Marquette, it felt like we had one less day
- 0:57Speaker 2: of preparation than the teams that we were playing, and
- 1:01Speaker 2: so it felt like we were me kind of chasing
- 1:03Speaker 2: a little bit in terms of getting guys the sort
- 1:05Speaker 2: of recovery and rehabit that they need. So, you know,
- 1:08Speaker 2: for Liam, for Hassan, for a couple of our other
- 1:11Speaker 2: high minute guys.
- 1:11Speaker 3: I think that's been a nice break.
- 1:13Speaker 2: And then, like you mentioned, you know, Saint John's place
- 1:15Speaker 2: tonight against Marquette. You know, so we have a little
- 1:18Speaker 2: bit of an advantage in terms of our preparation as well.
- 1:22Speaker 1: You know, you're talking about guys who are in the
- 1:24Speaker 1: middle of the season, you know, the final third of
- 1:26Speaker 1: the schedule, like Alex Caravan for instance, has been playing
- 1:30Speaker 1: monster minutes. When you watch him from the sidelines or
- 1:35Speaker 1: in practice, can you tell anything about his stamina and
- 1:38Speaker 1: his physicality and the wear and tear that might be
- 1:42Speaker 1: happening for a guy like him, And how would you
- 1:44Speaker 1: tell that?
- 1:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think you can see it a
- 1:47Speaker 3: little bit as the game goes on. But I give
- 1:49Speaker 3: Alex a lot of credit.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I mean, Alex is playing thirty eight minutes a game
- 1:52Speaker 2: in conference play, and you know, he's a little bit
- 1:55Speaker 2: of an iron man for us. You know, he really
- 1:57Speaker 2: is an excellent condition. He takes great care of it
- 2:00Speaker 2: his body. He's got a really strict routine that he
- 2:02Speaker 2: sticks to in terms of the way that he prepares
- 2:04Speaker 2: for games, the work that he does with our athletic
- 2:07Speaker 2: training staff and our strength staff. So you know, I
- 2:10Speaker 2: think Alex is uniquely prepared to go long stretches in
- 2:13Speaker 2: these games. And you know, we try to find him
- 2:15Speaker 2: little windows to get him a break every now and
- 2:17Speaker 2: then use our timeouts to try to help him through it.
- 2:20Speaker 2: But you know, with some of the injuries that we had,
- 2:22Speaker 2: and then obviously just how significant Alex is, you know
- 2:26Speaker 2: for our team, it's it's hard to have him out
- 2:28Speaker 2: of the game.
- 2:29Speaker 3: You know.
- 2:29Speaker 1: It's interesting, Luke, when you when you watch him play,
- 2:31Speaker 1: and I've been watching him for three years, you have
- 2:33Speaker 1: two He does the little things and and the coaches
- 2:37Speaker 1: will talk about that, not only at U Comb but everywhere.
- 2:41Speaker 1: I mean, other opposing coaches have talked about his ability
- 2:44Speaker 1: to impact games. I mean, you know, he doesn't do
- 2:47Speaker 1: anything spectacular. He's not you know, doctor j He's not
- 2:51Speaker 1: Vince Carter, He's not that, but he does so many
- 2:54Speaker 1: little things. As you've been watching him over these last
- 2:58Speaker 1: two and a half years, have you seen a guy
- 3:01Speaker 1: like this, I mean, he's really unique.
- 3:03Speaker 3: I think he is.
- 3:05Speaker 2: I mean I think, you know, the thing that he
- 3:06Speaker 2: does that's spectacular is the way that he connects you know, people,
- 3:11Speaker 2: you talk about it now in basketball circles, they say,
- 3:13Speaker 2: guys that are like connective tissue, you know, and that's
- 3:16Speaker 2: what Alex is for our program.
- 3:18Speaker 3: You know, he's got an unbelievable mind for the game.
- 3:22Speaker 2: He's far and away kind of our most cerebral guy
- 3:24Speaker 2: out there on the floor and has been since early
- 3:27Speaker 2: on in his career. You know, so he does a
- 3:29Speaker 2: really great job of getting us organized, and then just
- 3:32Speaker 2: his overall game, you know, his ability to impact the
- 3:35Speaker 2: game in different ways. You know, obviously his three point shooting,
- 3:38Speaker 2: but also he passing.
- 3:39Speaker 3: His ability to get on the glass. He's improved dramatically
- 3:42Speaker 3: as a defender over the last couple of years. So,
- 3:45Speaker 3: you know, I think what's been great to see, especially
- 3:47Speaker 3: the last couple of games. You know, he's been struggling
- 3:49Speaker 3: with his shooting, but he's just gotten lost in playing,
- 3:52Speaker 3: you know, and really impacting the game in a variety
- 3:55Speaker 3: of ways, getting to the foul line, you know, not
- 3:58Speaker 3: shooting the ball great from the three point line, and
- 4:00Speaker 3: find a way to go get six free throw attempts
- 4:02Speaker 3: against Marquette. He gets eight free throw attempts in the
- 4:04Speaker 3: game against A. Paul. So he just makes a major
- 4:07Speaker 3: impact on the game every time he's out there.
- 4:10Speaker 1: And the thing about him too is you can see
- 4:13Speaker 1: the respect he has of his teammates. Obviously, the coaching
- 4:17Speaker 1: staff is appreciative of what he's done. A Yukon helped
- 4:20Speaker 1: win two national championships. But the guys of you, if
- 4:24Speaker 1: you pay attention, and I know you do, when they
- 4:27Speaker 1: see him and they see what he does, and they
- 4:29Speaker 1: see him playing hurt, you know, ankle issue for a
- 4:32Speaker 1: few games and he's out there gutting it out. I mean,
- 4:35Speaker 1: what can you say about the example this guy sets
- 4:38Speaker 1: in terms of what how that impacts this overall program.
- 4:44Speaker 3: I mean, he sets a tremendous example. You know.
- 4:46Speaker 2: I think it's been a little bit of an adjustment
- 4:48Speaker 2: for him this year. You know, his first couple of
- 4:50Speaker 2: seasons with the team, he was able to take a
- 4:52Speaker 2: little bit of a backseat in terms of, you know,
- 4:55Speaker 2: the way that he was vocalizing to the group. It
- 4:57Speaker 2: was really more about his play on the court. You know,
- 5:00Speaker 2: this year we've asked him to take a little bit
- 5:02Speaker 2: more of a leadership role. In terms of the way
- 5:04Speaker 2: that he leads the group and galvanizes the team with
- 5:07Speaker 2: his voice.
- 5:08Speaker 3: And it's been an adjustment for him. You know, it's
- 5:10Speaker 3: not something that's supernatural for him. You know, he's more comfortable,
- 5:14Speaker 3: you know, kind of expressing those things with his play.
- 5:17Speaker 3: But as you mentioned, you know, the guys there, you know,
- 5:19Speaker 3: they can't help but be impressed by his commitment level,
- 5:23Speaker 3: his toughness.
- 5:24Speaker 2: You know, he's played through all kinds of bumps and bruises,
- 5:27Speaker 2: and like you mentioned, the ankles and the different things
- 5:29Speaker 2: that he's had to kind of fight through, not just recently,
- 5:32Speaker 2: but throughout the entire course.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Of his career. And you know, his routines.
- 5:36Speaker 2: You know, I talked a little bit about the way
- 5:37Speaker 2: he takes care of his body, but his commitment level
- 5:40Speaker 2: to being in the gym every single morning.
- 5:42Speaker 3: He's the first guy in there.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Every night, he's the last guy to leave, and so
- 5:46Speaker 2: it's hard not to respect that if you're one of
- 5:48Speaker 2: his teammates.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Yeah, and he's also become a shot maker of sorts,
- 5:53Speaker 1: because I know Dan's been pushing him to, you know,
- 5:56Speaker 1: be aggressive, get some shots off during games, don't be
- 5:59Speaker 1: you know, pass and he made a couple of big
- 6:02Speaker 1: ones the other night of Marquette that were like, you know,
- 6:04Speaker 1: one beat the shot clock from about eighteen feet away
- 6:07Speaker 1: straight on that that drive from the left to the
- 6:11Speaker 1: right to the left, it went in on the left
- 6:12Speaker 1: hand by him. Was that was a spectacular shot. Uh.
- 6:17Speaker 1: You know, when a guy like that makes plays like that,
- 6:19Speaker 1: it's gotta be even more uplifting I think for the team.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I mean that that left hand finished across the lane
- 6:27Speaker 2: was a big shot, you know, really kind of helped
- 6:29Speaker 2: to stem the tide. One of their runs, the late
- 6:32Speaker 2: shot clock, you know, jumper that he made that you
- 6:35Speaker 2: talked about. I mean, but again, it's it's a it's
- 6:38Speaker 2: been a little bit of a struggle for him this
- 6:39Speaker 2: year because especially with Liam out of the game, you know,
- 6:43Speaker 2: Hassan dealing with some injuries recently. You know, he he's
- 6:46Speaker 2: facing a different level of scrutiny, a different level of coverage.
- 6:49Speaker 2: He's the number one guy on the scouting report every
- 6:52Speaker 2: single night, you know, and so it's forced him into
- 6:54Speaker 2: having him make more difficult shots and more difficult plays,
- 6:57Speaker 2: and you know, as a result, you know, his percentages
- 7:00Speaker 2: have gone down a little bit in terms of his efficiency.
- 7:02Speaker 2: But I think it's going to be great for him,
- 7:04Speaker 2: you know, in the totality of his career to have.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Gone through these experiences.
- 7:08Speaker 2: It's making him a better player right now, and I
- 7:10Speaker 2: think it's going to help aid in kind of rounding
- 7:13Speaker 2: out his game.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Yeah, you can see it, that's for sure. Luke Murray's
- 7:17Speaker 1: with us, the Yukon assistant coach were back at a moment.
