- 0:00SPEAKER_02: Ta-da! We're here.
- 0:03SPEAKER_02: We're here.
- 0:04SPEAKER_02: It happened.
- 0:06SPEAKER_06: Literally the worst.
- 0:07SPEAKER_06: The podcast where we talk about things that are the worst.
- 0:12SPEAKER_06: I am Anna.
- 0:14SPEAKER_03: I'm Lauren.
- 0:17SPEAKER_03: All the worst things.
- 0:19SPEAKER_06: Today we're here to talk about men or bears.
- 0:24SPEAKER_06: Again.
- 0:27SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 0:28SPEAKER_03: Do we choose the man or do we choose the bear when we're alone in the woods?
- 0:35SPEAKER_03: That is the question.
- 0:37SPEAKER_06: I think it depends.
- 0:39SPEAKER_06: I think it depends.
- 0:40SPEAKER_06: Also, where in the United States am I?
- 0:42SPEAKER_06: I feel like this has always been a little bit more of a near nuanced answer than people give it credit for.
- 0:51SPEAKER_06: Fair.
- 0:52SPEAKER_06: So anyway.
- 0:55SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 0:55SPEAKER_06: You have a petty for today.
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: I do.
- 1:00SPEAKER_03: Uh when I am bagging groceries at the grocery store, and the plastic bags like stick to each other.
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: So like you've used up a bag and you pull it off the thing, and like the next one doesn't automatically pull open.
- 1:15SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: Because they're all like the plastic is still all stuck together.
- 1:19SPEAKER_03: And then you stand there fighting with it.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: And I always feel pressure at those little quick checkout lines, because in my head, I know they're self-checkout, but I'm like, these are supposed to be quick, which they're rarely quick.
- 1:33SPEAKER_06: But still just actually slower to use self-checkout.
- 1:37SPEAKER_03: 100%.
- 1:38SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 1:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: Uh but yeah, I just I get so annoyed when they're stuck together, and then I just start dropping stuff over there, and then I'm like, at this point, I might as well be at Aldi.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: I'd be paying less money.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: I've got to, you know, bagging my own groceries, like so.
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: It just annoys me when they stick together.
- 1:58SPEAKER_06: It might be easier just to go to Aldi.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, sometimes.
- 2:04SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: The stores are smaller, which helps.
- 2:08SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 2:09SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 2:10SPEAKER_06: Not as much choice.
- 2:11SPEAKER_06: So you're not debating on which brand of beans to buy.
- 2:15SPEAKER_06: They have one bean.
- 2:16SPEAKER_06: That's all you need.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: What is their what is their label?
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: Is it Dakota?
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: Dakota beans or something like that?
- 2:24SPEAKER_06: I mean it's all private label, but yeah.
- 2:27SPEAKER_06: That's why I'm not sure.
- 2:27SPEAKER_03: I know have the organic brand.
- 2:30SPEAKER_06: Mm-hmm.
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: Simple or simply something.
- 2:34SPEAKER_06: Simply natural.
- 2:36SPEAKER_06: I can't remember.
- 2:37SPEAKER_06: Something like that.
- 2:39SPEAKER_03: All the organic buzzwords.
- 2:42unknown: Yeah.
- 2:43SPEAKER_03: Simply natural, hormone, pesticide free.
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: Promise you it's really organic.
- 2:50SPEAKER_03: Clean.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: Clean bean.
- 2:53SPEAKER_06: It might be.
- 2:55SPEAKER_06: TBD.
- 2:56SPEAKER_06: Was it tested for glyphosate?
- 2:58SPEAKER_06: Who knows?
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 3:01SPEAKER_03: Always the open question.
- 3:02SPEAKER_03: What's your uh obnoxious or petty petty the worst?
- 3:08SPEAKER_06: When you go to crunch a leaf on a walk, and then it's not as crunchy as it appears to be.
- 3:18SPEAKER_06: And so you get a weird half crunch or like crispy instead of crunchy.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's depressing.
- 3:27SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I'm like, no, leaves need to be.
- 3:30SPEAKER_06: If you're gonna be out there, you need to be crunchy.
- 3:32SPEAKER_06: And I don't like leaves that have already been crunched.
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: Well, yeah, there's nothing left.
- 3:40SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 3:41SPEAKER_03: They're just like confetti at that point.
- 3:43SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 3:44SPEAKER_06: So it's like, what's the point?
- 3:45SPEAKER_06: What is the point of you?
- 3:46SPEAKER_06: Why are you here?
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: Why are you still on the ground?
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: Why didn't you just evaporate after you got crunched?
- 3:53SPEAKER_06: Right, exactly.
- 3:55SPEAKER_06: That is that's what needs to be happening.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, it's really disappointing when yeah, it's just like, oh just yeah, a moosh rather than a snap crackle pop.
- 4:10SPEAKER_06: Nobody has time for mushy leaves.
- 4:13unknown: Nope.
- 4:13SPEAKER_03: Nobody.
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: Not at all.
- 4:15SPEAKER_03: Not at all.
- 4:17SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 4:18SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 4:19SPEAKER_06: Yep, yep.
- 4:20SPEAKER_06: That's why it's petty.
- 4:24SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: I although part of me is like, how are any of the leaves, at least around us, how are they not ready for a good crunch?
- 4:34SPEAKER_03: Like they haven't had water.
- 4:35SPEAKER_03: I think they said there's been no recorded rainfall.
- 4:38SPEAKER_03: Like at least at BNA for like 26 days.
- 4:42SPEAKER_03: Or since August 26th.
- 4:44SPEAKER_03: One of the two is is bad.
- 4:46SPEAKER_06: It's a little toasty.
- 4:47SPEAKER_06: I don't know if you've noticed, but uh things are a little crusty, crispy.
- 4:54SPEAKER_03: Little little bit crunchy.
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: But hopefully we'll have rain soon.
- 4:59SPEAKER_06: It's like all of those are you 80.
- 5:02SPEAKER_03: Young homeowners that become their parents.
- 5:04SPEAKER_03: And yes.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: All of those commercials.
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: Except I'm not a homeowner.
- 5:09SPEAKER_06: Unfortunately, you do become your parents.
- 5:12SPEAKER_06: You do.
- 5:12SPEAKER_06: You become your parents.
- 5:14SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: It's that cliff that you're just driving at.
- 5:19SPEAKER_06: I bought a weather kit for my dad for Christmas.
- 5:23SPEAKER_06: And he still uses it.
- 5:25SPEAKER_06: It's got a little wind speed thing.
- 5:27SPEAKER_06: That's got a temperature gauge.
- 5:31SPEAKER_06: It's got a rain gauge that it reads itself.
- 5:38SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 5:38SPEAKER_06: I was like a little weather station for your house.
- 5:44unknown: Oh.
- 5:44SPEAKER_06: That's awesome.
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: I want to find out if you can tour the meteorolog meteorological location.
- 5:56SPEAKER_06: Probably.
- 5:57SPEAKER_06: Yeah, Ellington Ag Center.
- 5:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:59SPEAKER_03: There we go.
- 6:04SPEAKER_06: But they might do a tour just for adults.
- 6:11SPEAKER_03: Oh, that would be so much fun.
- 6:12SPEAKER_03: You can actually go get trained to be an official like tea spotter.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: So that like your reports.
- 6:18SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna have to do it.
- 6:20SPEAKER_03: I think my nephew and dad did that a few years back.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: I'm like, yes, do it.
- 6:24SPEAKER_06: Why not?
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: My nephew, my nephew likes to chase storms.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: Well I have a feeling in a vehicle that is probably not appropriate for being that close to tornadoes.
- 6:37SPEAKER_06: Tornado chasers drive tanks that have been modified to be vehicles or vehicles that have been modified to be tanks.
- 6:45SPEAKER_06: So if it's not that yeah.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: If it's uh definitely not that.
- 6:51SPEAKER_06: If it doesn't weigh that much, probably not it might be a Corolla.
- 6:55SPEAKER_03: Can you imagine?
- 6:57SPEAKER_03: Like no.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: You know, like in the Italian job where they put all of those uh like they were simulating the car's capacity to drive, and they were drive runs with the weights in the back.
- 7:09SPEAKER_03: It's like that Linden just needs to load up the car with weights from the gym.
- 7:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and then it'll be yes, that will solve that problem.
- 7:18SPEAKER_06: He'll definitely be safe after that.
- 7:20SPEAKER_06: Yes, totally.
- 7:21SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that'll be fine.
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: Oh man.
- 7:25unknown: Yeah.
- 7:26SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 7:26SPEAKER_03: I had a dream about tornadoes uh last week.
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: I'm like, mmm, that's not a good, that's not good.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: Awesome.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: Cool.
- 7:36SPEAKER_03: What if that's what this podcast became?
- 7:39SPEAKER_03: Just me recounting my dreams.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: You could be short.
- 7:45SPEAKER_03: I could.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: Uh just a bunch of weird stories, and people just come on and share their weird or send in their weird stories slash weird dreams.
- 7:56SPEAKER_06: You could interview people about their dreams.
- 7:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I could.
- 8:01SPEAKER_06: There you go.
- 8:02SPEAKER_03: It could be a lot of fun.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: Well, anyway, we are here on this podcast today to talk about man versus the bear.
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: And it's coming up again for me because of some recent news in Yosemite, and then of course the Cornell situation and all of that.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: So um, yeah, man versus bear.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: Uh, that was what, two years ago now?
- 8:33SPEAKER_03: Something like that?
- 8:35SPEAKER_06: I don't remember.
- 8:37SPEAKER_06: I thought it was last year.
- 8:38SPEAKER_03: Any oh, time.
- 8:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so it was just the question making the rounds on social media to women.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: Um, would you, if you were by yourself in the woods, rather run into a bear on the trail or run into a man?
- 8:57SPEAKER_03: And the overwhelming majority of women responded they would rather run into the bear.
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: And then the continuation of that became uh some types of men being very offended and ticked off about this.
- 9:18SPEAKER_03: And there were a lot of reactions to so many women choosing it, and then the irony of all ironies is like, and you are running face first into the point without realizing it.
- 9:30SPEAKER_03: Like your large, unreasonable reaction to something small is why we don't want to run into men.
- 9:41SPEAKER_06: This violent outburst you are having might be the problem.
- 9:45SPEAKER_06: Might in fact be the problem.
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: Yes, exactly.
- 9:50SPEAKER_03: So yeah.
- 9:53SPEAKER_03: Uh, but it sounds like you have a you have a take on man versus bear that may be outside the ordinary.
- 10:01SPEAKER_06: Okay, so black bears, yes, all the time.
- 10:06SPEAKER_06: 100% down to run into a black bear.
- 10:09SPEAKER_06: One, they're basically dog-sized, they're angry, but it's not gonna be any worse than a bear a dog attack.
- 10:17SPEAKER_06: Truly.
- 10:18SPEAKER_06: Um you can fend them off fairly easily.
- 10:23SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and I don't really think it's gonna be that much worse than a dog attack.
- 10:27SPEAKER_06: I think you can fend off a black bear easier than you can fend off a dog.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'll give you that.
- 10:34SPEAKER_03: You can probably scare them and get them to like disengage faster than a dog would.
- 10:39SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 10:40SPEAKER_06: If that dog's coming at you, that dog is coming at you.
- 10:43SPEAKER_06: Um black bears all the time.
- 10:47SPEAKER_06: But where I kind of draw the line, I'm like, grizzly bear, maybe.
- 10:55SPEAKER_06: Those are not as easy to fend off.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 10:59SPEAKER_06: And also, I think I draw the line at polar bear, because those bears, you don't they will eat you.
- 11:09SPEAKER_06: There is no fending.
- 11:11SPEAKER_06: You are going to die.
- 11:12SPEAKER_06: You run into a polar bear, you're going to die.
- 11:14SPEAKER_06: So, depending on where I am at in the United States, kind of determines my answer on like, would I rather run into a man versus a bear?
- 11:28SPEAKER_06: Man, 100% of the time, if I am in the Arctic.
- 11:33SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 11:35SPEAKER_06: And uh you know, grizzly, maybe.
- 11:40SPEAKER_06: It depends on how big that grizzly is and how angry it is.
- 11:43SPEAKER_06: How hungry is this grizzly?
- 11:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, how far away am I from it when I stumble onto it?
- 11:50SPEAKER_06: Okay, let's say that you stumble and you are three feet from the man or the bear.
- 11:59SPEAKER_03: Have I surprised it?
- 12:01SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: Then I might pick man.
- 12:10SPEAKER_06: See, that's what I'm saying.
- 12:11SPEAKER_03: But it has to be a grizzly.
- 12:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 12:14SPEAKER_06: If it's a black bear.
- 12:16unknown: Yeah.
- 12:17SPEAKER_06: Every time.
- 12:19SPEAKER_06: But if it's a grizzly, I'm like, no.
- 12:23SPEAKER_06: Not if I'm three feet away from that thing.
- 12:27SPEAKER_03: But the thing with yes, yes.
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: And especially if I've surprised it, because that's when they're like, black bears don't like to be surprised either, but you get big and they'll leave you alone.
- 12:37SPEAKER_03: Grizzlies, if they surprise you, like there's there's not much to get it to stop other than bear spray, and even that doesn't happen.
- 12:44SPEAKER_03: And at three feet, like, you're gonna be torching yourself with the bear spray just as much as the bear.
- 12:50SPEAKER_06: So and you can't, I mean, with grizzlies, you're supposed to lay down and get small and compact and not get big.
- 12:57SPEAKER_06: And so it's like, how are you gonna do that if you've surprised it and you're three feet away from it?
- 13:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it'd be like the stop, drop, and roll from my childhood, but just stop drop cower.
- 13:13SPEAKER_03: So stop drop, stay small.
- 13:18SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 13:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: But even in it's just yeah, because even in this conversation, the assumption isn't I go with a man every time, and then there's this one situation where I pick the bear.
- 13:32SPEAKER_03: The conversation is I pick the bear, except for this smaller set of circumstances where I pick the man.
- 13:39SPEAKER_03: If I see a dude 20 feet away or 50 feet away just ambling through the woods, I'm gonna be on high alert the whole time.
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: Because if I just said, hey bear, and like smack my hands together or something, he's gonna go, like the man, I don't know what he's gonna do.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: The bear will stay away from me.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: And that's I'm like, ugh, the unpredictability for me is the big part.
- 14:03SPEAKER_03: It's like, I don't know what the dude's gonna do.
- 14:06SPEAKER_03: There's general ideas on what a bear will do, roughly.
- 14:17SPEAKER_03: But not so much the man.
- 14:20SPEAKER_06: I think for me.
- 14:26SPEAKER_06: Again, it like is more nuanced than that.
- 14:29SPEAKER_06: It's like more there are certain situations where I'm just like, it really just depends.
- 14:35SPEAKER_06: It depends on the dude and it depends on the bear.
- 14:37SPEAKER_06: Like never I don't think I've I don't know.
- 14:43SPEAKER_06: Maybe I'm just contrarian, but I'm like, I don't think it is like this simple.
- 14:48SPEAKER_06: Maybe it is.
- 14:52SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's fair.
- 14:55SPEAKER_03: We sh yeah, we get to have that choice for ourselves.
- 15:01SPEAKER_03: I I think I pick I pick Bear.
- 15:05SPEAKER_03: I think I choose Bear because and I can't take credit for this, uh, I don't know what his name is.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: His handle is like Ebony Warrior1 or something on Instagram, but I really appreciate his take on a lot of different things around, especially like race and class and all that sort of thing.
- 15:25SPEAKER_03: But he he was showing a video uh that was illustrating the point of like a man asking a woman for her phone number, she said no, and then he starts harassing her.
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: And he was like, the reason that men do this is they get their feelings hurt, and then they don't know how to handle their feelings, so they get mad and they get uh aggressive and difficult.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: He's like, so then they're so they're embarrassed, they get angry, and then you don't know what they're gonna do.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: Some men don't know how to handle their feelings, and so then it comes out as like bah and then it just escalates rather than de-escalating like it could.
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I was just like that's that's an interesting take.
- 16:16SPEAKER_06: Yes, I do think that happens.
- 16:23SPEAKER_06: And I don't know.
- 16:31SPEAKER_06: I've had people mess with me in cities, I've never had anybody mess with me in the woods.
- 16:37SPEAKER_06: Um I've never felt unsafe in the woods.
- 16:43SPEAKER_06: Which you and I are very opposite in this way.
- 16:51SPEAKER_06: Like, I don't like it when people are around in the woods.
- 16:54SPEAKER_06: I'd rather go camping with no one there than just by myself.
- 16:56SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 16:57SPEAKER_06: Um I don't love it when randos show up to campgrounds, but I've also never had a bad experience out there.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: And yeah, that makes sense.
- 17:12SPEAKER_06: Um I also have the experience of like most men in my life before they get to know me, find me very intimidating.
- 17:23SPEAKER_06: So I'm just like, okay, I also feel like I have that going.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: Which is different.
- 17:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:33SPEAKER_03: That's fair.
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I feel like I used to have slowly peeling that label off, like, take advantage of me, like stamped on my head.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: Like, hey, yes, yes, I I don't want to upset anyone.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: What do you mean?
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's fine.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: You want me to approach your car at night?
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah, sure.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: You have questions about where the pizza goes?
- 17:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:59SPEAKER_03: Sweet baby Lauren was like, oh, I can help.
- 18:02SPEAKER_03: And it wasn't probably until my like early 30s that I was like, what are you doing?
- 18:08SPEAKER_03: Stop being helpful.
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: Stop being helpful.
- 18:12SPEAKER_03: Like they'll they'll figure it out without you.
- 18:16SPEAKER_03: Uh they'll figure out where to deliver the pizza if there is a pizza to deliver.
- 18:20SPEAKER_03: So yeah.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:24SPEAKER_03: Do you yeah, this is just interesting.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: Because like, I'm also not taking the scenario super literally.
- 18:34SPEAKER_03: I've had a lot of not good experiences with dudes over the course of my life.
- 18:38SPEAKER_03: So I'm just like, yeah, I would rather run into the bear, as scared as I am of bears while camping.
- 18:45SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah.
- 18:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:50SPEAKER_06: I've had a lot of not good experiences with dudes.
- 18:52SPEAKER_06: And I don't know.
- 18:56SPEAKER_06: I I just tend to think of it more in a more nuanced way, I guess.
- 19:04SPEAKER_06: Than like it just really depends.
- 19:06SPEAKER_06: It really depends.
- 19:08SPEAKER_06: And I just don't think it can for me, it just can't be like, oh, it is this, this or this.
- 19:17SPEAKER_06: Um at least with this scenario.
- 19:21SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 19:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 19:25SPEAKER_03: I'm not hearing you say though that you think people are wrong if they have one like a a very like one answer or the other pretty clear-cut for them.
- 19:36SPEAKER_03: Where are you?
- 19:38SPEAKER_06: No, I don't think that's I do think if your first reaction to someone approaching you in the woods is abject terror, that might be something to investigate in therapy.
- 19:54SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 19:55SPEAKER_03: Agreed.
- 19:56SPEAKER_06: You probably should not be having that reaction to any human that you encounter.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 20:02SPEAKER_06: Um agreed.
- 20:03SPEAKER_06: If you're having that reaction to a bear, that makes a lot of sense.
- 20:08SPEAKER_06: Um so I don't think it's I don't think the response is is wrong or incorrect.
- 20:17SPEAKER_06: And I think it it I don't know, I just think it can be more nuanced than what we typically give our very black and white answers.
- 20:33SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because you could I feel like you could set up a hundred scenarios of different different bears, different humans, different conditions, that sort of thing.
- 20:46SPEAKER_03: So yeah, I definitely get where you're coming from there.
- 20:49SPEAKER_06: Because if it was like bear or Ted Kacinski, it'd be like bear.
- 20:58SPEAKER_06: Fair, yes.
- 20:59SPEAKER_06: I'm glad to hear that.
- 21:01SPEAKER_06: Because if you were to run into Ted Kacinski, you'd likely run into him in the woods.
- 21:06SPEAKER_06: Uh or prison these days.
- 21:09SPEAKER_06: But Yep.
- 21:11SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 21:11SPEAKER_06: I mean, there's definitely people I don't want to run into in the woods.
- 21:15SPEAKER_03: Oh, for sure.
- 21:17SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 21:18SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 21:19SPEAKER_03: And I wonder too, uh, I haven't been camping like in the woods since I started my anxiety medications.
- 21:28SPEAKER_03: So I wonder if I would find it more enjoyable to just be out there.
- 21:33SPEAKER_03: Um, but even still then, I would be more wary of men in the woods.
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I don't know.
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: This is interesting.
- 21:43SPEAKER_03: I didn't know we came down in uh like that we were approaching this question so differently.
- 21:50SPEAKER_06: Like it.
- 21:51SPEAKER_06: It's also interesting because like I grew up in the middle of the woods, so I spent so much time in the woods, and you grew up in the Midwest, which has No woods.
- 22:00SPEAKER_06: There are no woods.
- 22:01SPEAKER_04: No woods at all.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: Nope.
- 22:04SPEAKER_06: So I'm curious to see like what that what the difference is there too.
- 22:10SPEAKER_06: I'm like, oh yeah, I spent all my time in the woods for many years.
- 22:15SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 22:16SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: Because I guess yeah, that's also true.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because that's the other thing.
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: Like hiking in Arizona was always different for me.
- 22:28SPEAKER_03: It's a different experience because you're exposed.
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: Uh like the trail is like you can usually see for miles, if not down the trail, at least into the mountains around you.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: And then in like Tennessee, I did some hiking in New York.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you can't see all that far, especially depending on what kind of like woods or forest you're in, how dense it is and everything.
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: But yeah, yeah.
- 22:55SPEAKER_03: Fascinating.
- 22:57SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 22:58SPEAKER_03: You know, I bring it up because it's happened, it's been in Yosemite uh not last week, the week before last.
- 23:05SPEAKER_03: Um, there were a couple of women that were out, uh, they were going for a walk, I think, and this guy was sitting on a tree stump off to the side of the trail.
- 23:16SPEAKER_03: And as they came by, he asked them, like, hey, do you know where something is?
- 23:20SPEAKER_03: And they're like, Nope, and just kept walking.
- 23:23SPEAKER_03: And he got up and started following them.
- 23:26SPEAKER_03: And uh yeah.
- 23:29SPEAKER_03: And he had a pair of utility gloves, and he put on the pair of utility gloves, and they started jogging, and he started jogging to keep up with them, and I guess it was a similar situation for another woman a few days later.
- 23:41SPEAKER_03: They think it's the same dude.
- 23:42SPEAKER_06: Um yeah, you probably have a serial killer on your hands.
- 23:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, oh yeah, that's that's what that is.
- 23:48SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, it's just like, huh.
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for the yep, it makes sense.
- 23:54SPEAKER_03: And then granted, you know, it's like, well, that's why some women choose the bear, and then there are lots of other great conversations around uh wildlife being crazy, and then running into lots of chill people in the woods, so yeah.
- 24:14SPEAKER_03: Anyway, that was what brought all this up.
- 24:18SPEAKER_06: It's interesting.
- 24:19SPEAKER_06: You sound disappointed.
- 24:22SPEAKER_03: Um, I am what am I feeling right now?
- 24:28SPEAKER_03: I know I don't have to defend myself with you.
- 24:36SPEAKER_03: And I, but I also feel that little like uh I think I don't want to be misunderstood in this.
- 24:49SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, I don't want you to think I'm an idiot.
- 24:57SPEAKER_03: Damn it, that's what it is.
- 24:59SPEAKER_03: Just be like, aren't you smarter, Lauren?
- 25:02SPEAKER_03: Can't you like hold the nuance of this conversation where I'm just like whatever.
- 25:07SPEAKER_03: And that's why I'm like, I know it's not a you thing, it's a me thing, because I know that's not what you're thinking.
- 25:13SPEAKER_03: But there's one of those, there's one of those itty bitty little parts.
- 25:16SPEAKER_03: It's like, come on.
- 25:19SPEAKER_03: No, not don't let anybody think you're stupid.
- 25:22SPEAKER_03: So that'll be in therapy this week.
- 25:24SPEAKER_03: Woo!
- 25:25SPEAKER_05: Great, great our podcast less than 24 hours.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: It's like, oh no, I don't want to look stupid.
- 25:36SPEAKER_02: Crap.
- 25:38SPEAKER_03: Oh, I thought we'd dealt with that, but apparently not.
- 25:41SPEAKER_03: No, it's because it's the dang it's the dang spiral.
- 25:45SPEAKER_03: Everything just comes back around in another way.
- 25:48SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I don't think I don't think it's dumb to be afraid of dudes in the woods.
- 25:52SPEAKER_06: Because I have had like most of my experiences though, and this is what's interesting, because this is what I was thinking about.
- 25:59SPEAKER_06: I was like, oh, most of my experiences with weird dudes have occurred in Walmarts.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 26:06SPEAKER_06: I hate Walmart.
- 26:07SPEAKER_06: Uh yeah.
- 26:09SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 26:10SPEAKER_06: And I'm like, oh yeah, yep, yep.
- 26:14SPEAKER_06: I've had to have random dudes pretend that they're my boyfriend in a Walmart.
- 26:18SPEAKER_06: But I've never had that happen in a woods situation.
- 26:25SPEAKER_06: Not to say that it can't happen there.
- 26:28SPEAKER_06: But I'm like, Right.
- 26:29SPEAKER_06: No, never been stocked in the woods.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: That makes sense.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: It makes sense.
- 26:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:40SPEAKER_03: I've let's see, have I had any bad experiences?
- 26:43SPEAKER_03: Like I've had I've had some people be like, oh, are you out here hiking alone?
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: Like back in the days when I did that.
- 26:49SPEAKER_03: And like, you just you don't ask people that.
- 26:52SPEAKER_03: Like, if you're a dude, don't ask a woman if she's hiking alone.
- 26:59SPEAKER_03: Stop it.
- 27:01SPEAKER_03: Like, even if you're not creepy, that's a creepy question.
- 27:05SPEAKER_03: Ugh.
- 27:06SPEAKER_06: It's just kind of a weird thing to ask.
- 27:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 27:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 27:10SPEAKER_03: Oh, you're out here by yourself?
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: Dangerous for women to hike by themselves.
- 27:14SPEAKER_03: I don't know why so many do.
- 27:15SPEAKER_03: I'm like, oh my god, leave me alone.
- 27:18SPEAKER_03: But it's been a long time since that.
- 27:21SPEAKER_03: It's like I'm trying to avoid this situation.
- 27:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because my bad experiences with men have all been yeah, in very populated areas, bars and suburbs.
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: So yeah.
- 27:38SPEAKER_03: Definitely more bad experiences there than in the woods.
- 27:43SPEAKER_06: I am fidgeting with my fidget toys.
- 27:52SPEAKER_06: Making this weird hexagon shape that I attend to satisfying.
- 28:00SPEAKER_06: It is satisfying, but then I'm like, well, I always just end up folding it back up.
- 28:06SPEAKER_06: Just mushing it back into the box.
- 28:09SPEAKER_06: So yeah.
- 28:12SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I'm like, why do I why do I do that?
- 28:14SPEAKER_06: Oh, to have something for my hands to do.
- 28:16SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 28:17SPEAKER_06: But I'm also just like, and then it just smushes down into a little ball.
- 28:23SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 28:24SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's that's a good that's that was smart to get two of them the same color.
- 28:29SPEAKER_03: To have like more volume.
- 28:32SPEAKER_06: I wanted I wanted that because I was like, it's gonna drive me nuts if they're different colors.
- 28:42SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 28:43SPEAKER_06: I need them to be the same set twice.
- 28:46SPEAKER_03: So Yep.
- 28:49SPEAKER_03: That's why I'm so annoyed with mine because all the color fell off.
- 28:55SPEAKER_03: Fell off of the one, and like half the color fell off in the other set that were already different, sets of the multicolored to begin with.
- 29:07SPEAKER_03: And so now like I I didn't want to mix them together before.
- 29:12SPEAKER_03: But now I'm just like, maybe I can get all of the color off really fast.
- 29:15SPEAKER_03: How could I do that?
- 29:17SPEAKER_03: Oh, I wonder if acetone would do it if I soak them in acetone and then just like grind it between my hands.
- 29:24SPEAKER_03: That would probably melt it right off.
- 29:28SPEAKER_03: Well, that's what I'm doing tonight.
- 29:30SPEAKER_04: Uh-oh, there you go.
- 29:32SPEAKER_03: Polishing your specs.
- 29:36SPEAKER_03: Your spectacles?
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: No, your specs.
- 29:40SPEAKER_03: And then I got my brain shocking done today.
- 29:44SPEAKER_03: I was just like, yay.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: It's like three different doctors that rotate through.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: And so I saw another one today.
- 29:51SPEAKER_03: And he's like, is this your sixth appointment?
- 29:53SPEAKER_03: I was like, nope, it's my third.
- 29:56SPEAKER_03: He was like, oh, okay.
- 29:58SPEAKER_06: I was like, yeah, only three incured yet.
- 30:03SPEAKER_03: Totally.
- 30:04SPEAKER_03: Not at all.
- 30:06SPEAKER_06: Great.
- 30:07SPEAKER_06: When do they so when is it supposed when are you supposed to start feeling better from getting your brain zapped?
- 30:13SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 30:14SPEAKER_03: Uh so brain zap is TMS uh transcranial magnetic stimulation.
- 30:19SPEAKER_03: They send little zaps into a certain spot on your brain.
- 30:23SPEAKER_03: Um it feels like an annoying tapping, like like tap tap tap tap tap tap uh for 18 minutes, off and on.
- 30:32SPEAKER_03: Four minutes on, 10 seconds, four minutes, four seconds on, ten seconds off, and they do that over and over again.
- 30:38SPEAKER_03: Um for uh treatment resistant depression.
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: Hey, I got the SADS.
- 30:44SPEAKER_03: They said 10 to 15 sessions is usually when people start to see changes in symptoms, some a little earlier, some a little later.
- 30:55SPEAKER_03: So I'm wondering what it'll be like for me.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: He asked today at the start of the session, he was like, Are you sleeping in?
- 31:02SPEAKER_03: Like, how has your sleep changed?
- 31:03SPEAKER_03: I was like, it's the same disaster it's always been.
- 31:07SPEAKER_03: Like, he's like, Okay.
- 31:09SPEAKER_03: Uh, and then he asked, Oh, they asked about mood.
- 31:12SPEAKER_03: Um, I'm like, nope, no, no changes in mood.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: Um, I took the PHQ 9 at the start of the session yesterday.
- 31:22SPEAKER_03: They were like, we need to make sure we get a baseline.
- 31:24SPEAKER_03: And I was like, yeah, let's see where it's at now.
- 31:27SPEAKER_03: Definitely qualified yesterday.
- 31:28SPEAKER_03: I was like, see, this is why it's so good that they went ahead and tried it anyway.
- 31:34SPEAKER_06: So there you go.
- 31:37SPEAKER_03: Oh, I'm gonna n these, especially the one coordinator, because it's the same assistant Monday through Thursday.
- 31:46SPEAKER_03: So we're gonna get to spend a lot of time together.
- 31:51SPEAKER_03: She said she asked me something today that I told her yesterday.
- 31:55SPEAKER_03: And uh I was like, how do you remember that?
- 31:59SPEAKER_02: She was like, because we like I saw you 24 hours ago, and I was like, oh yeah, it's only been 24 hours.
- 32:06SPEAKER_03: It feels like a lifetime.
- 32:09SPEAKER_06: So do you have to go every day?
- 32:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 32:13SPEAKER_03: Monday through Friday.
- 32:15SPEAKER_03: Yup.
- 32:16SPEAKER_03: And if I have to miss, they'll just like tack it on to the end of the sessions.
- 32:21SPEAKER_03: But I really that's a slippery slope.
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: Because I'm like, that could be a real easy I'll put it on.
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: And then I'm doing this into the freaking new year, and I really would like to be done with it before Christmas.
- 32:33SPEAKER_06: Can you speed it up by just doing a 24-hour nonstop TMS test?
- 32:42SPEAKER_03: Oh my gosh, that sounds terrible.
- 32:45SPEAKER_06: It might be terrible, but I'm like, part of me is like, if I were gonna do it, I'd wanna like, we're getting this done.
- 32:54SPEAKER_06: We're not doing this everyday thing.
- 32:56SPEAKER_06: Can't do it, not doing it.
- 32:57SPEAKER_03: No, we're doing like I feel like it might be a similar approach as to like we lift twice a week over time versus doing like all of the lifting we will ever do in a 24-hour period.
- 33:23SPEAKER_06: Because I'm like, I think I would just I would probably rather do shock therapy and get it all done in the weekend than do I gotta do this every day for the next six months of my life.
- 33:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's fair.
- 33:39SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 33:41SPEAKER_06: I'm like, just zap me and get this over with.
- 33:44SPEAKER_06: Get it over with.
- 33:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, depression's cool.
- 33:48SPEAKER_06: A good thing for this week.
- 33:52SPEAKER_03: I'm excited for Soup Squad on Saturday.
- 33:56SPEAKER_06: Soup Squad's going to go.
- 33:57SPEAKER_03: That's gonna be so fun.
- 33:59SPEAKER_03: Oh, I'm looking forward to that.
- 34:01SPEAKER_03: Soup Squad is a pigeon of three of us, me, Anna, and another friend, and we get together once a month.
- 34:09SPEAKER_06: We do.
- 34:09SPEAKER_06: We eat soup.
- 34:11SPEAKER_06: We did take a break over the summer.
- 34:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:14SPEAKER_06: Partially because there was a lot going on, partially because there was it was hot.
- 34:18SPEAKER_06: There are not a lot of cold soups, as it turns out.
- 34:22SPEAKER_03: No, and this summer was bad for salad.
- 34:25SPEAKER_03: Because I was thinking, I was like, we could do salad swaps, but like every green thing was gonna make you ill.
- 34:35SPEAKER_03: It was it's bad.
- 34:37SPEAKER_06: It was gonna be real bad.
- 34:40SPEAKER_06: It's gonna be real bad.
- 34:42SPEAKER_03: Oh man.
- 34:43SPEAKER_06: I bought some lettuce, but I still haven't been able to make myself eat lettuce again.
- 34:47SPEAKER_06: I'm just like, uh, okay.
- 34:50SPEAKER_03: I've I've ventured back into lettuce.
- 34:52SPEAKER_03: We're doing okay with the lettuce.
- 34:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:56SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 34:57SPEAKER_06: No, I'm like, oh, you're contaminated.
- 34:59SPEAKER_03: I'm still not buying shredded iceberg.
- 35:03SPEAKER_06: I bought some shredded romaine.
- 35:06SPEAKER_03: Oh, there you go.
- 35:07SPEAKER_06: And I'm like, it's just gonna go bad in my fridge.
- 35:12SPEAKER_06: So that's where we're at with that.
- 35:15SPEAKER_03: Have you ever grilled romaine?
- 35:17SPEAKER_03: Like cut it in half vertically, brush it with olive oil, salt, and pepper.
- 35:22SPEAKER_03: Oh my gosh.
- 35:23SPEAKER_03: Grill it, and then finish with parmesan cheese.
- 35:27SPEAKER_03: Oh, it's so good.
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: Sounds amazing.
- 35:30SPEAKER_03: I really want that now.
- 35:32SPEAKER_06: Um Ben somehow found moomen bonbons.
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: What?
- 35:48SPEAKER_06: Yeah, there's moomen bonbons.
- 35:51SPEAKER_06: So you got a bunch, and I'm like, yeah.
- 35:55SPEAKER_06: I don't know if I'll eat the bonbons, but I will cut the moomens off the package.
- 36:00SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 36:01SPEAKER_03: Okay, good.
- 36:02SPEAKER_06: Because moomins.
- 36:04SPEAKER_06: So they're so cute.
- 36:06SPEAKER_06: They're so cute.
- 36:06SPEAKER_06: And the bonbons are cloud-shaped.
- 36:09SPEAKER_06: Oh because I mean, it's hard not to love a moomin.
- 36:16SPEAKER_06: Moomin anything.
- 36:17SPEAKER_06: You put a movement on it, I'm there.
- 36:20SPEAKER_03: They're amazing.
- 36:22SPEAKER_03: I love them so much.
- 36:23SPEAKER_03: Where how did you first find them?
- 36:25SPEAKER_03: Do you remember?
- 36:27SPEAKER_06: Mumens in general?
- 36:29SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 36:29SPEAKER_06: Uh how did I find them?
- 36:34SPEAKER_06: I had looked up graphic novels for some reason, and I think I found them that way.
- 36:40SPEAKER_06: And then I did a whole like, okay, who is this person that created them?
- 36:46SPEAKER_06: And then I went down the whole, like, oh my gosh, there's Moomin land in Japan.
- 36:52SPEAKER_06: I'm moving to Japan now.
- 36:56SPEAKER_06: So yeah.
- 36:59SPEAKER_06: Which I did get some Moomen tabs to use.
- 37:06SPEAKER_06: Oh, that's right.
- 37:10SPEAKER_06: They're very cute.
- 37:11SPEAKER_06: So they're adorable.
- 37:12SPEAKER_06: That will be happening.
- 37:14SPEAKER_06: Some movement stickers.
- 37:16SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 37:17SPEAKER_06: I have a movement planner.
- 37:19SPEAKER_06: Now I have Mumen bonbons.
- 37:23SPEAKER_03: So my goodness.
- 37:25SPEAKER_03: It's like creeping into other facets of your life.
- 37:29SPEAKER_06: You know.
- 37:29SPEAKER_03: Your reading.
- 37:30SPEAKER_03: Also just like your planning, your snacking.
- 37:33SPEAKER_06: Isn't everything movement themed?
- 37:36SPEAKER_03: It wouldn't make things so much better.
- 37:39SPEAKER_06: I mean, really though.
- 37:40SPEAKER_06: I'll take that.
- 37:41SPEAKER_06: It would.
- 37:43SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 37:43SPEAKER_06: So there's that.
- 37:45SPEAKER_03: And I mean that's pretty good.
- 37:49SPEAKER_06: That's pretty good.
- 37:51SPEAKER_06: That's pretty good.
- 37:52SPEAKER_06: That's a little joys.
- 37:55SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 37:56SPEAKER_03: I really like the number 33, by the way.
- 38:00SPEAKER_03: I don't know why, but it just feels really good.
- 38:03SPEAKER_03: I like that.
- 38:05SPEAKER_06: I don't like numbers that are the same number multiple times.
- 38:10SPEAKER_06: There's just something about it.
- 38:11SPEAKER_06: I'm like, nope.
- 38:13SPEAKER_06: I like prime numbers though.
- 38:16SPEAKER_03: I do like prime.
- 38:19SPEAKER_03: Although 21 and 7, they have an attitude.
- 38:24SPEAKER_03: I'm a fan of three.
- 38:25SPEAKER_03: 11.
- 38:27SPEAKER_03: 13.
- 38:29SPEAKER_06: Yeah, 13's fine.
- 38:30SPEAKER_06: 67.
- 38:31SPEAKER_03: 17.
- 38:33SPEAKER_03: Yes, I like 67.
- 38:36SPEAKER_03: That's a good one.
- 38:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that is a good one.
- 38:39SPEAKER_06: Uh yeah.
- 38:41SPEAKER_06: That one's good.
- 38:46SPEAKER_06: 73.
- 38:47SPEAKER_06: I like that one.
- 38:48SPEAKER_06: That one's good.
- 38:50SPEAKER_03: Do any of these have a color for you?
- 38:53SPEAKER_03: Do numbers have colors for you?
- 38:55SPEAKER_06: No.
- 38:56SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 38:57SPEAKER_03: Do they for you?
- 38:58SPEAKER_03: No.
- 38:59SPEAKER_03: Not like every once in a while it's like, oh, that seven's orange.
- 39:03SPEAKER_03: Like that's just it.
- 39:05SPEAKER_03: But not every seven is orange, so I don't know.
- 39:07SPEAKER_03: It doesn't make sense.
- 39:10SPEAKER_03: But it's not like a lot of people where it's like a number smells a certain way or uh has a color all the time.
- 39:18SPEAKER_03: It's not like that.
- 39:20SPEAKER_06: No.
