- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show with
- 0:02Speaker 1: Dan Hurley, coach. I know after the Butler game, you
- 0:08Speaker 1: had a few things to say about some of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: officiating of how things went. You were talking about the
- 0:12Speaker 1: movement of players in the motion offense that U kind
- 0:16Speaker 1: of likes to run, and how officials aren't really calling
- 0:19Speaker 1: the defensive work that is being thrown up against some
- 0:23Speaker 1: of your players. I don't know how that really can
- 0:28Speaker 1: be refereed properly, because I think it should be refereed
- 0:34Speaker 1: differently than we're seeing it. Is what I'm saying. Yukon
- 0:38Speaker 1: has got to be able to move through their offense
- 0:40Speaker 1: without being delayed and held and all that stuff. So,
- 0:44Speaker 1: I mean, how do you see that playing out as
- 0:45Speaker 1: this season goes on? Will you do you think there'll
- 0:48Speaker 1: be more awareness of what you were talking about or
- 0:50Speaker 1: is that something you just put out there because you
- 0:52Speaker 1: were frustrated.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Well, I mean, for us, obviously we have to qualify
- 0:57Speaker 2: for the NCAA tournament. But I think that that's why
- 1:00Speaker 2: we've had so so little problem, uh, you know in
- 1:04Speaker 2: the INC Double A Tournament the last couple of years,
- 1:06Speaker 2: partially because we've been we've been a bulletproof team with
- 1:10Speaker 2: the rebounding, the defense, and the offense and NBA players. Uh,
- 1:15Speaker 2: but I think you know, in the inn C Double
- 1:17Speaker 2: A tournament, they don't let uh. I think a conference
- 1:20Speaker 2: play obviously it's a lot more physical referees let a
- 1:24Speaker 2: lot more go. If you were to ref an n
- 1:28Speaker 2: C Double A tournament game like a conference game, you
- 1:30Speaker 2: wouldn't advance to the next round.
- 1:32Speaker 3: As an official. Uh.
- 1:34Speaker 2: You know if you pass on people, you know, hooking you,
- 1:38Speaker 2: grabbing you at the point of screens, you know, diving
- 1:41Speaker 2: into people using screens.
- 1:43Speaker 3: I mean, for us, we clearly foul. I'm not.
- 1:47Speaker 2: I am not saying that we don't foul. I said
- 1:51Speaker 2: multiple times that we Jalen Stewart made some horrible, horrible
- 1:55Speaker 2: fouls last night that absolutely killed us. You know, we
- 2:00Speaker 2: had a three point a time where we fouled a
- 2:04Speaker 2: three point We were called for a foul and a
- 2:06Speaker 2: three point shooter and it looked like we didn't and
- 2:09Speaker 2: then Alex looked like he got fouled and they didn't
- 2:13Speaker 2: call it. So you know, there are things like that.
- 2:15Speaker 2: But we are fouling on dribble drives, We are fouling
- 2:20Speaker 2: for and so and and those get called. But for us,
- 2:24Speaker 2: like a cut is a dribble drive for us, you know,
- 2:27Speaker 2: like off the ball, movement is a big part of
- 2:30Speaker 2: how we play. So when our cuts are being impeded
- 2:34Speaker 2: or were being grabbed, that's the equivalent of of like
- 2:37Speaker 2: us getting to the rim and referees passing on foul calls. So,
- 2:42Speaker 2: you know, like we've got great officials in our league.
- 2:47Speaker 3: It's also coming off you know, off.
- 2:50Speaker 2: The Craton game, you know, where you know there was
- 2:54Speaker 2: a three point shot that was not called the foul
- 2:58Speaker 2: that you know when we've well, you know, when you
- 3:00Speaker 2: get a chance to talk to you know, the head
- 3:03Speaker 2: of officials in our league that you know there might
- 3:06Speaker 2: have been.
- 3:06Speaker 3: A call miss there. You know.
- 3:08Speaker 2: So my frustration with what I said was probably on
- 3:11Speaker 2: the heels of us having an opportunity to maybe send
- 3:14Speaker 2: that game to overtime and then maybe we win the
- 3:18Speaker 2: game in overtime. So but yeah, there's you know, like
- 3:22Speaker 2: no one wants to see a million fouls called, but
- 3:26Speaker 2: in a game that's not great for anyone, But just
- 3:30Speaker 2: early in a game, I think when we're being grabbed
- 3:33Speaker 2: and held, we just need some calls made so that
- 3:37Speaker 2: we were able to move.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Yeah, and get closer to the bonus quicker. I mean
- 3:41Speaker 1: the NBA a few years ago started to allow players
- 3:45Speaker 1: to make their cuts without being impeded, and I think
- 3:48Speaker 1: that changed the entire way offenses played on the NBA level,
- 3:51Speaker 1: which has made it a much more offensively get a
- 3:53Speaker 1: better league to watch in some ways. After the game,
- 4:00Speaker 1: the Butler game, you were talking about the fact and
- 4:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna call FS one about this because I agree
- 4:05Speaker 1: with you on this. You get too much FaceTime. I
- 4:08Speaker 1: mean you're like, must see TV. What is going on here?
- 4:11Speaker 1: Why can't thatd Maana be on camera, you know, bitching
- 4:15Speaker 1: and moaning about stuff. I mean, it should be fifty
- 4:18Speaker 1: to fifty. It looks like they like to go to
- 4:20Speaker 1: you because they think something's going to happen.
- 4:23Speaker 3: You know, I should put a GoPro on my head.
- 4:26Speaker 2: I'm telling you, like when I see when I look
- 4:29Speaker 2: over at times and look at my my other you know,
- 4:33Speaker 2: ruthless competitors, coaches in my conference, you know that are
- 4:38Speaker 2: just as intense as I am, and that are sometimes
- 4:42Speaker 2: out on the court in a defensive stance or screaming
- 4:47Speaker 2: at a ficient like.
- 4:48Speaker 3: And then I just wonder and listen, I'm not a victim.
- 4:52Speaker 2: You know that they they understand that they're going to
- 4:55Speaker 2: have potential clips of me and my intensity that's going
- 4:59Speaker 2: to oh viral, that's going to create engagement with the
- 5:04Speaker 2: with their tweets and with all the engagement farming media
- 5:08Speaker 2: and all the soft people in the media that that
- 5:11Speaker 2: want to make sports even softer. I don't think we
- 5:14Speaker 2: should make sports softer. I think what makes sports great
- 5:18Speaker 2: is having life or death competitors, people that are fighting,
- 5:22Speaker 2: giving everything they have to win games, right, I think
- 5:25Speaker 2: that's you know, for me what what I want to
- 5:28Speaker 2: see from my my players, my coaches, giving absolutely everything.
- 5:32Speaker 3: That they have.
- 5:34Speaker 2: You know, there's moments that you say or do things
- 5:37Speaker 2: that you know, you you know you you went too
- 5:40Speaker 2: far when I got caught saying again because you know,
- 5:45Speaker 2: I'm actually in my mind thinking that what I'm saying
- 5:48Speaker 2: is between me and the official. I'm not thinking that
- 5:51Speaker 2: I'm announcing that. But again, camera six is following me
- 5:54Speaker 2: the entire game, literally just having it on me the
- 5:58Speaker 2: entire game until I give them something worthy.
- 6:01Speaker 3: If they did that with.
- 6:03Speaker 2: With most coaches that coach with any level of intensity,
- 6:07Speaker 2: they'd have just as much footage. I'll also say that
- 6:11Speaker 2: there's coaches that have said far worse things than what
- 6:14Speaker 2: I said.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Uh, of course have been said the referees that have
- 6:19Speaker 3: not been caught on film.
- 6:20Speaker 2: You know me, I'm embarrassed because it was it was egotistical,
- 6:25Speaker 2: and I'll be embarrassed when I see other coaches, you know,
- 6:28Speaker 2: like when I see Coachzo or Rick Patino, or Bill
- 6:32Speaker 2: Self or Sean Miller or Greg McDermott or Shaka Smart,
- 6:36Speaker 2: I'm gonna be like embarrassed and I said something so
- 6:38Speaker 2: egotistical to a ref But.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Other than just seeing those coaches, I don't.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Really I don't really care how else anyone else perceives
- 6:50Speaker 2: what I said.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I'm with you. And listen.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Imagine if we had a camera on Ed Cooley or
- 6:55Speaker 1: Sean Miller the whole game. Wow, we'd find some stuff
- 6:59Speaker 1: that probably we didn't want to hear, I'm guessing, and
- 7:02Speaker 1: a lot of others, and a lot of others. We
- 7:05Speaker 1: could go into a list. All right, Dan Hurley, we
- 7:07Speaker 1: us back in the moment. We'll talk about Xavier. They're
- 7:09Speaker 1: coming up on the weekend. This is the Yukon Men's
- 7:11Speaker 1: Basketball Coaches Show.
- 7:12Speaker 3: On lear field
