- 0:23This is Laura Ddo with the Becker's Healthcare Podcast.
- 0:26I'm thrilled today to be joined by Mark Combs,
- 0:27chief Technology officer of Vandellia Health. Mark,
- 0:30it's a pleasure to have you on the podcast today.
- 0:33Thank you. It's great to be here.
- 0:35Now, I know we've got a lot to talk about.
- 0:37There's so much happening in healthcare right now,
- 0:39but then for you in particular,
- 0:40as you're working through a merger of two organizations,
- 0:43but before we dive into my questions,
- 0:45can you tell me a little bit more about yourself and your background?
- 0:48Yeah, so, um, I've been, been in it for over 25 years.
- 0:53Uh, this is my second health health organization that I've been with,
- 0:58have worked just about in every area of it you can think of. It's,
- 1:03uh, it's a fascinating field and it's just constantly changing. So it's,
- 1:07it's very, keeps me very interested, that's for sure.
- 1:11Absolutely. I I can imagine there's never a dull moment, really, uh,
- 1:14from the healthcare perspective. And, you know, I, I'd love to hear too,
- 1:18if you could talk a little bit more about how vandellia Health it was formed and
- 1:22you know,
- 1:23where you're at right now in that process of connecting the two organizations.
- 1:26Um, and,
- 1:26and then we can dive into the broader technology and health IT questions.
- 1:31Yeah, I would, I would love to. Um, in January of 2021,
- 1:35I joined Mon Health System and we were headed down
- 1:40one road and, um, in September of 2022,
- 1:45we came together with Charleston Area Medical Center, uh, out of Charleston,
- 1:49West Virginia. We're in Morgantown, West Virginia,
- 1:51up in sort of the north central region of our state,
- 1:55and we decided to come together and inform Vandellia Health.
- 1:58The two organizations really have a lot of great synergy, and we're,
- 2:02we're growing. Uh,
- 2:03we've recently added two hospitals and we're looking at a lot of other
- 2:07acquisitions around the state. It's a very exciting time to be a part of, uh,
- 2:11Vandellia Health,
- 2:12and I'm just really happy to be here and to be serving the people of the great
- 2:16state of West Virginia.
- 2:18That's fantastic and definitely exciting to hear about the growth and
- 2:21development of the broader system. I, I know that's a huge undertaking.
- 2:24So w with that in mind,
- 2:26what are some of the opportunities that you're seeing right now, uh,
- 2:29for the organization as well as the headwinds that you have your eye on?
- 2:33Yeah, I think one area of growth that,
- 2:35that we've really finally started to gain traction in is the area of
- 2:39telemedicine. You know,
- 2:40a lot of organizations around the country have been very successful with this.
- 2:44It's something that we're really starting to see a huge pickup in
- 2:49being able to reach out to the rural areas of West Virginia.
- 2:53And almost every single area of West Virginia is rural. Uh,
- 2:56we're a state of around 1.75 million people.
- 3:00Most of your listeners live in cities larger than that, but that's us,
- 3:04that's West Virginia. So population's scarce,
- 3:08it takes 30 minutes to get anywhere, and good healthcare is hard to come by,
- 3:12especially some of the specialty providers.
- 3:15So we're really reaching out in areas like cardiology, endocrinology,
- 3:20other areas that, you know, people really can't get access to in,
- 3:25in some of these smaller places.
- 3:26They just don't have enough population to support the higher end physicians or
- 3:31salaries. There's just not the population or support it.
- 3:35So in the population centers like Charleston or Morgantown where we have
- 3:40access to universities and we have access to more physicians and,
- 3:44and better infrastructure, quite honestly, um,
- 3:47we're able to extend those physicians reach out into the smaller communities
- 3:52throughout the state and really help improve the lives and health of the people
- 3:56of West Virginia.
- 3:58That's a really great point, and especially thinking through it,
- 4:01as you mentioned, the distance in,
- 4:04in a lot of the population living in remote areas, uh, how do you, um,
- 4:08from the technology side make sure that, um, the different executives and and,
- 4:13um, the,
- 4:14the people that you're working with have an understanding of what it takes to
- 4:18connect to the communities and, um, you know,
- 4:20maybe they might not have great access to wireless or,
- 4:24or some of those other types of things.
- 4:26So how are you thinking through some of those challenges and, um,
- 4:29making sure that you're still able to connect as much as possible?
- 4:33Yeah, that's a great question. You know,
- 4:35it always starts with process and people,
- 4:39so a lot of times when, when we started the telemedicine discussion, it was, oh,
- 4:43can we get this cart? Ooh, can we get this access? Can we get this camera?
- 4:47Can we get this piece of technology?
- 4:49And I kind of kept trying to push back saying, wait a minute,
- 4:53do we even know what service we're gonna provide?
- 4:55Do we have the physicians available to provide the service?
- 4:57Do we know how we're gonna check patients in? Who's gonna bill for it?
- 5:00Who's gonna do this? Who's gonna do that?
- 5:02The organization has caught up and we have a,
- 5:05a great director of telemedicine here and what we lovingly call Vandellia North,
- 5:11and she's really been able to dive in and,
- 5:13and help with these operational issues. Once we got those straightened out,
- 5:18the rest that kind of fell into place,
- 5:20we have a great telemedicine partner in, in Teledoc,
- 5:24and we really have been able to reach out across the state. Now,
- 5:29as you said, connectivity sometimes is a concern,
- 5:33but usually, not always,
- 5:35but usually in these areas where we might have a rural health clinic or we might
- 5:39have, you know, a community hospital or, or a a, uh, critical access hospital,
- 5:45they do have some sort of high speed connection already.
- 5:48So if we're working within the clinics or working in and around that hospital
- 5:53area and we're able to set up a room or, or set up something, you know,
- 5:58connected to that hospital's network, we're typically okay, um,
- 6:02we're starting to strike out with, um, some mobile solutions.
- 6:07Those aren't fully formed yet, but we're definitely moving in that direction.
- 6:12Absolutely. That's a really great point, and definitely great to hear that,
- 6:16you know, you, you're seeing some traction with, uh,
- 6:18those types of services now as we're moving forward with growth and development.
- 6:23I know right now is, uh, important to be using resources wi wisely.
- 6:28So what does that look like for you? Um, obviously,
- 6:31especially as you've got two organizations coming together,
- 6:33adding two more hospitals as well. Um,
- 6:36what does growth look like and how do you,
- 6:38are you adding value to the overall organization?
- 6:41How are we adding value to the overall organization?
- 6:44Isn't that the constant question we should all be asking ourselves?
- 6:48We are trying to deliver our projects on time, under budget.
- 6:52We're trying to be good stewards of the resources they give us in not
- 6:57over purchasing things that, you know, hey, here's the next new shiny object.
- 7:02We wanna make sure everything that we're doing aligns with the organization's,
- 7:07um, strategic plan.
- 7:09I think a lot of times that's where IT departments get lost in the shuffle.
- 7:14Um, sometimes all they see us as is, you know,
- 7:18fix the computer or fix this or keep the telephone system running or whatever,
- 7:22but we really are and should be a strategic partner to the organization,
- 7:27understanding the organization's vision,
- 7:29sitting at the table with the executives, helping define that vision,
- 7:33helping to drive it, but also running alongside it.
- 7:38So we can't run ahead of the, of the company.
- 7:41We have to understand what the organization's goals are and then find the
- 7:44correct technology that will help enable those goals and enable, um,
- 7:49what the business wants to accomplish.
- 7:51Absolutely. I think that makes a lot of sense. You know,
- 7:54it is great to hear from your perspective that you're able to, uh,
- 7:57really just align with the larger and broader goals and objectives of,
- 8:01of the organization. Um, I,
- 8:04I think I'd love to hear when you look at your technology teams and the people
- 8:08that you work most closely with, how are they evolving?
- 8:11Is there anything different that you're seeing, um, from,
- 8:14from the teams that you're working with now as you're jumping into a high growth
- 8:19mode, I guess, for the overall, uh, health system?
- 8:22Yeah, it's, it's interesting, you know, the, the culture is evolving.
- 8:26We're working with the teams to hopefully be more proactive,
- 8:30understand that their individual scopes as individual contributors is
- 8:35growing, learning and understanding that we can't work in silos anymore.
- 8:40Everyone's gotta be on board and everyone's got a seat on the bus and everyone's
- 8:44gotta move in that right direction, and there's no magic switch.
- 8:49You know, we may have been working a certain way for the last five years,
- 8:5310 years, whatever. We kind of get used to that, and it's,
- 8:56it's my responsibility and,
- 8:58and my leadership team's responsibility to help move people to a place where
- 9:02they can be more successful, help them see themselves in a different light.
- 9:06They're really part of a bigger picture, um, and,
- 9:10and kind of help them look up out of kind of the day-to-day work,
- 9:15if that makes sense.
- 9:18Yeah, I I think that's great insight and perspective,
- 9:20especially when you're at a time where, as you mentioned, you need everybody,
- 9:24uh, to be moving the right direction and, and, you know,
- 9:26there's high change happening. Um, you know, I think that's very,
- 9:30very interesting to hear in a great mindset to have. Now, um,
- 9:34you talked a little bit about some of the different changes that are happening
- 9:38and how you really are, um, moving forward with the best, uh,
- 9:42interest in, in the goals of the organization in mind.
- 9:45What do you see as being one risk or investment that's really worth making this
- 9:49year that will add leaps and bounds overall to patient care and what you're able
- 9:54to do in the future?
- 9:55Well, I, I, I think I would answer that in, in probably two different ways. One,
- 10:00what would be right for our organization, because, you know,
- 10:02generally when thinking about that question,
- 10:05you have to think about where you are, who you are as an organization,
- 10:09and what your goals are.
- 10:11I feel like one of the investments that the organization is starting to,
- 10:14to make is to, um, look at digital front door patient intake,
- 10:20trying to better connect with patients on a, a one-to-one basis.
- 10:24We haven't really got there yet. It's a lot of, a lot of discussion. Our, our,
- 10:28uh, VANDELLIA south area is, uh,
- 10:31probably ahead of that than the Vandellia North area, and I call them that,
- 10:35that that's how we designate them between the two organizations.
- 10:39We're early on in our merger process, so we still, you know,
- 10:44we're still kind of running somewhat separate, somewhat together,
- 10:47we're moving more together and we're moving more strategically together. And I,
- 10:51and I, I think the,
- 10:53the senior executive team is really doing a good job with guiding us, um,
- 10:57that way. But it takes time.
- 11:00But I do believe that as an organization we can do a much better job connecting
- 11:04with our folks, our patients, our consumers. Um,
- 11:09I was recently at an educational conference and they made an interesting point.
- 11:14We spend so much time focused on the providers of healthcare and not on the
- 11:19consumers of healthcare.
- 11:20And I think that's a mindset change that all of us in industry could probably do
- 11:25with. I think the second way I would answer that question is just looking at the
- 11:30growth and explosion of this thing called artificial intelligence.
- 11:33And it's such a buzzword, it's gotten so, so big,
- 11:37but we recently saw out of hymns that Epic and eClinical Works works,
- 11:43and I think even Salesforce are starting to integrate chat G P T into their
- 11:47products. If we as, as technologists in the healthcare arena,
- 11:51don't lift our heads up and kind of understand what this is and what it means,
- 11:55it's quickly going to run over us.
- 11:58So just a couple of thoughts on areas I think we we need to keep our eyes on.
- 12:04Absolutely. I think that's fascinating to hear. And certainly, um,
- 12:08as you mentioned, uh, having that chatt t generative ai,
- 12:12it is something that's front of mind. We've seen the, through the news,
- 12:16like you said,
- 12:17having Epic and Microsoft work together on it and others is just really, um,
- 12:22really fascinating to look at where the potential opportunities and then also
- 12:26two challenges could be for some of that technology.
- 12:29When you look at your own organization, um, how do you think about AI and is,
- 12:34is that something that comes up in the boardroom or,
- 12:36or something that's still primarily, you know, um,
- 12:39something that you're thinking through from a technology perspective and
- 12:41potentially, uh, you know, a as time goes on,
- 12:44could be ready to bring it into the organization as it makes sense?
- 12:47You know, I, I think it's interesting because it's,
- 12:51it's not on a lot of people's mind right now.
- 12:55We're trying to raise the consciousness of it and raise the awareness of it.
- 12:59But like a lot of things,
- 13:00we're all running so fast and we're trying to do all these great things that
- 13:04it's sort of outside of our peripheral vision at the moment.
- 13:09It is an area of potential risk that I think our risk and legal teams need to
- 13:14take a look at. Definitely our technology teams need to understand and, uh,
- 13:19our operational leadership needs to think through it as well.
- 13:22It's not something we're going to be able to avoid.
- 13:24It's here and it's just going to grow and continue to become more and more a
- 13:29part of our daily lives.
- 13:31Absolutely. Great perspective. Now, before we wrap up our conversation,
- 13:35I just have one more question and looking into the future,
- 13:38how do you see your role evolving in,
- 13:39in growth for you and the technology teams at Valia Health? I.
- 13:44Think it goes back to that comment around aligning with the organization.
- 13:49You know, I think gone are the days,
- 13:52and maybe they should never have been the days when we just deal with
- 13:57the, the plumbing of it.
- 14:00I think we have to continually work and think like business leaders and not
- 14:04necessarily strictly technology leaders.
- 14:08We have to make better purchases for the organization.
- 14:12We have to do a better job at aligning and using our resources.
- 14:16We have to be more efficient in how we're using what the
- 14:21organization provides us. All of the, a lot of the funds,
- 14:25I think about it this way, when I spend the funds,
- 14:29it's from somebody's grandmother coming in to get a lab done. You know,
- 14:33am I gonna take that money that they provided us and blow that on some piece of
- 14:38technology that's just gonna sit on a shelf for the next three years?
- 14:40And then one's gonna think about, or some piece of software,
- 14:43we're only gonna get 10% usage out of.
- 14:46I think we have to be smarter and wiser about our technology purchases,
- 14:50our decisions, find ways to simplify our technology stack,
- 14:54find ways to better leverage the cloud and just look at ways to,
- 14:59to simplify what we're doing so we can be more efficient and more effective.
- 15:04Fantastic. Well, mark, thank you so much for joining the podcast today.
- 15:06This has been really a fun conversation and we're excited to have you join us as
- 15:10well in October for the Health IT Digital Health and Revenue Cycle event.
- 15:14I know there'll be a lot of discussions around many of the themes we've talked
- 15:16about here, and so it'll be great to catch up, uh, later this year.
- 15:20Yeah, I'm, I'm really looking forward to it.
- 15:22Last year was a really fun conference and, uh, I think Becker's just does a,
- 15:26a great job and, and I appreciate the opportunity to participate.
