Speaker 7: Thank you for having me. Yes, and that is so
2:33
Speaker 7: cool that you're the voice on the target cash register
2:38
Speaker 7: when I leave. That's like super cool to say, do
2:40
Speaker 7: you have that on a business card or something I do?
2:43
Speaker 7: That's actually neat.
2:44
Speaker 6: I know, I still get you.
2:46
Speaker 7: Never listened to that recording the same way ever again,
2:49
Speaker 7: I know her can.
2:50
Speaker 6: Al we say thank you, Amy, Thank you, Amy. You'll
2:53
Speaker 6: think you're nuts?
2:54
Speaker 7: Yes, can we say that? Dave Allen when he says
2:56
Speaker 7: he's kind of a big deal, but what if he's
2:57
Speaker 7: not here? Do we still have to say he's kind
2:59
Speaker 7: of a big deal for you? Is an here? Now?
3:01
Speaker 6: We don't have to Okay, I didn't say that.
3:03
Speaker 7: You're kind of a big deal, Amy, And we're happy
3:04
Speaker 7: to be here with you. Thank you, thank you.
3:07
Speaker 6: Well. You guys are a big deal. And Regatta is
3:09
Speaker 6: such a big deal. So excited to join in all
3:12
Speaker 6: the activities. I mean, holy cow, there's a ton of
3:15
Speaker 6: activities going on. So we have Mayor Amy Goodwin here,
3:19
Speaker 6: we have Josh Scott with the craft Beer Festival and
3:23
Speaker 6: Evan Osborne, they all fired up Youth Barbecue Challenge, So
3:27
Speaker 6: tell me more.
3:28
Speaker 7: Yeah, it's it is absolutely an incredible time of year
3:33
Speaker 7: in the city of Charleston. When we brought back the
3:36
Speaker 7: regatta four years ago, hand to the heavens. This is
3:39
Speaker 7: exactly how it happened. When when I was running and
3:42
Speaker 7: people said, oh, you need to bring it back, you
3:44
Speaker 7: need to bring it back. Okay, okay, but you can't
3:47
Speaker 7: have the Charleston Stern wheel Regatta without Stern Wheelers. And
3:51
Speaker 7: so I when I came to our team and I said, okay,
3:54
Speaker 7: I think about bringing this back, and they're like, mm hmm,
3:56
Speaker 7: it's a big deal. How are we going to raise
3:58
Speaker 7: all that money? Coordinate, organize? And I said, well, I
4:01
Speaker 7: got to get the Stern wheelers first. I made two
4:02
Speaker 7: phone calls to Josh Scott and to Brian Hughes and said,
4:07
Speaker 7: y'all will the boats come? And we went to a meeting.
4:12
Speaker 8: Well, I think we brokeered the whole thing on the
4:13
Speaker 8: back of a cabin cruiser at lave on the Levee.
4:16
Speaker 7: I think we did. And then I went to the
4:18
Speaker 7: Sternwell Association annual meeting which Brian and Josh helped sneak
4:23
Speaker 7: me in and I said, if we have it, well
4:25
Speaker 7: you bring all your big boats, and they said we will,
4:28
Speaker 7: And that's how it started so many years ago, and
4:31
Speaker 7: it has grown every year. It is close to a
4:35
Speaker 7: quarter of a million people show up for four days.
4:38
Speaker 7: It is a thirty eight million dollar financial impact, an
4:43
Speaker 7: economic impact for the city. And people always say, oh,
4:45
Speaker 7: my gosh, what are you going to do with that money.
4:47
Speaker 7: It's not my money, it's your money. It's local businesses.
4:49
Speaker 7: It's shops and bars and restaurants and hoteliers who are
4:53
Speaker 7: making that which is music to any mayor's ear. But
4:57
Speaker 7: we wouldn't be able to do this enormous event with
5:01
Speaker 7: the without the help of the workers of the City
5:04
Speaker 7: of Charleston, police, fire, refuse, streets, traffic or the entire
5:09
Speaker 7: Mayor's office, the entire city manager's office, but also our
5:13
Speaker 7: board of directors at the Regatta, which Josh is a
5:16
Speaker 7: member of because we suckered him in. We said, you
5:18
Speaker 7: know about boats, come here, you know about boats and events. Yeah,
5:24
Speaker 7: And so we're just we're incredibly thankful for our sponsors
5:27
Speaker 7: and the people who really make it happen and great
5:30
Speaker 7: partner groups like the Capital Market and Evan and the
5:34
Speaker 7: Firecracker Race. We've got the Childhood Language Center. They do
5:38
Speaker 7: an amazing job working with children who have speech language disorders,
5:41
Speaker 7: autism and Asperger's and so we're delighted to have them
5:44
Speaker 7: in the fourth of July Firecracker Race, United Way. And
5:48
Speaker 7: the duck Drop, which is always so fun to watch
5:50
Speaker 7: all those little ducks. It's dropped off the bridge.
5:53
Speaker 8: It's fun to be on a stern will but going
5:55
Speaker 8: up river for the race and watch behind us as
5:57
Speaker 8: the last one goes under and they drop all the
5:58
Speaker 8: duckies behind us.
5:59
Speaker 7: I know it's so cool. But you know, speaking of
6:02
Speaker 7: the stern Wheel race, Amy, that is something that you know.
6:05
Speaker 7: There's so many events, and I know we're going to
6:06
Speaker 7: talk about them over this the next hour, but I
6:08
Speaker 7: will say one of the biggest events that has grown
6:12
Speaker 7: every funeral. If you ask me what's your favorite, you're
6:14
Speaker 7: not supposed to say you have a favorite, like saying
6:16
Speaker 7: you have favorite children. They're not listening. So I do. No,
6:19
Speaker 7: I'm kidding, I don't. But the funeral parade is always
6:22
Speaker 7: my favorite. It just is. I love it. I dress
6:24
Speaker 7: up with the kids every year. I'm into it. The
6:26
Speaker 7: Wiener Dog Race is huge, the crowds are spectacular. But
6:30
Speaker 7: every year we are watching the Kid's family Zone. We
6:33
Speaker 7: can talk about that. The Stern Wheel Races has now
6:37
Speaker 7: become kind of really popular and we really have to
6:41
Speaker 7: plan and organize around it. And this year, for the
6:45
Speaker 7: first time, I've been begging him for three years to
6:48
Speaker 7: do it. Josh Gott, who probably knows more about the boats,
6:51
Speaker 7: all of the boats and the river more than anyone,
6:54
Speaker 7: is going to help mc that on Sunday. So we're
6:57
Speaker 7: really thrilled to have Josh with us this year.
6:59
Speaker 6: One cheerful And when is the race.
7:02
Speaker 7: It is Sunday at three o'clock there it is, Yeah,
7:05
Speaker 7: right on haw Dad. So we have a big screen
7:07
Speaker 7: and it's gonna be it's gonna be super fun.
7:12
Speaker 6: Yes, absolutely. And so Josh, you have the craft Beer Festival.
7:16
Speaker 8: Yeah, this year we're back on Capitol Street. We've tried
7:19
Speaker 8: the big, we've tried the small, and in the right
7:20
Speaker 8: in the middle works. We've got a bunch of cooling
7:23
Speaker 8: fans that are coming. We've got a bunch of good
7:26
Speaker 8: for the heat, Yeah, a bunch of craft beers from
7:28
Speaker 8: Spriggs and let's see the beverage market in North Central distributing.
7:34
Speaker 6: Cool any fair weather IPAs there should be yes, Okay,
7:38
Speaker 6: all right, I only know this because of my husband.
7:41
Speaker 6: I don't know much about beer. He likes the Three
7:42
Speaker 6: Floyd's and all that stuff.
7:44
Speaker 7: Oh I don't know. My husband knows beers.
7:46
Speaker 9: I don't know.
7:47
Speaker 6: I know how fun. Okay. So the Craft Beer Festival
7:50
Speaker 6: that is five thirty today on Capitol Street, Yes awesome.
7:56
Speaker 7: And it's just a really nice get together, get everybody
7:59
Speaker 7: together of the it's the you know, unofficial launch of
8:03
Speaker 7: the regatta. Better Homes and Gardens does an amazing job
8:06
Speaker 7: their team. They've kind of embraced this as their event,
8:10
Speaker 7: and we're so happy to have Better Homes and Gardens,
8:12
Speaker 7: not just because they're really nice and fun people, but
8:15
Speaker 7: they're also sponsors. But it's really it's really neat and
8:19
Speaker 7: for for folks who really don't know a lot about beer,
8:22
Speaker 7: kind of like myself and my sister, to be able
8:25
Speaker 7: just to have a small taste of things and to
8:28
Speaker 7: be able to listen and learn from other people is
8:31
Speaker 7: a is a really great opportunity.
8:32
Speaker 6: It's an amazing craft. Hubby brews beer, So I mean
8:37
Speaker 6: the steps that go into it are just phenomenal and
8:42
Speaker 6: it's pretty cool.
8:43
Speaker 7: It is really cool. It is really cool. Of course,
8:45
Speaker 7: before that, I will mention that something new this year
8:48
Speaker 7: as well, and we got a sneak peek of it
8:50
Speaker 7: last night. I don't know, Josh, did you see the
8:52
Speaker 7: regatta through the years? Have you seen it yet?
8:55
Speaker 6: You wait to see that?
8:56
Speaker 7: Okay? It is so cool when you walk in. Josh
8:59
Speaker 7: has all like you talk about what you brought to that.
9:02
Speaker 7: But through the years after bringing the regatta back, people
9:05
Speaker 7: have brought me pieces of memorabilia. Josh one with me,
9:09
Speaker 7: Oh yay, what is it? Can you take a book? Yeah,
9:12
Speaker 7: may take from give it to us.
9:15
Speaker 6: I'm like, she's gonna want this than you.
9:17
Speaker 4: Yeah.
9:17
Speaker 6: No, it's from nineteen eighty four, it's for sure. Uh yeah,
9:21
Speaker 6: talk amongst your talks, amongst yourself.
9:23
Speaker 4: Grab it.
9:23
Speaker 7: But but Josh at an estate sale got for me
9:28
Speaker 7: a beautiful wrap around skirt from the seventies. That's a
9:31
Speaker 7: hand stitched skirt and you know, a hand painted purse.
9:37
Speaker 7: Someone sent to me and said, oh, I used to
9:39
Speaker 7: carry this at the regatta. I was so proud. I
9:41
Speaker 7: was like, that's a basket person by the way they're
9:43
Speaker 7: coming back.
9:43
Speaker 6: You may want to.
9:44
Speaker 7: Keep this for yourself, but I mean every hat and
9:47
Speaker 7: shirt and pin fun memory. We have videos playing of
9:51
Speaker 7: old pasts regattas that were very very cool, and you
9:55
Speaker 7: brought us a special gift.
9:56
Speaker 8: Josh too, I have a I was gifted by a
9:59
Speaker 8: real estate clas a handmade model of an old boat
10:03
Speaker 8: that is actually done at regatta.
10:04
Speaker 10: The whull of it is there.
10:05
Speaker 8: The boat is very different in appearance now, but the
10:08
Speaker 8: USS mud sock, that's the mud sock. Yeah, yep, it's
10:12
Speaker 8: the They split it down the middle Hamburger style, hot
10:14
Speaker 8: dog style on the four corners of it.
10:16
Speaker 10: Are still the hall of the mudsock today. So it's
10:19
Speaker 10: kind of cool.
10:19
Speaker 7: See what I told you he knows about boats.
10:21
Speaker 6: I does know about boats. That's very important.
10:24
Speaker 7: Okay, what do you have there for us that looks
10:26
Speaker 7: very seventy eighty terriffic fifteenth annual stern Rull.
10:30
Speaker 6: We gotta don't miss the boat. One dollar okay, that's cute.
10:36
Speaker 6: Let's see one dollar, yes, one charging for programs. Okay,
10:41
Speaker 6: So it looks like I'm guessing nineteen eighty four, nineteen
10:44
Speaker 6: eighty five, because there's coupons, oh, for around the city,
10:47
Speaker 6: and they expire twelve to twenty five eighty five, so
10:50
Speaker 6: maybe eighty five. I couldn't find a year on it anywhere.
10:53
Speaker 6: But isn't that cool?
10:53
Speaker 7: It's amazing.
10:55
Speaker 8: And I'm seeing Charleston National Bank on the back page.
10:57
Speaker 7: I know, I love it, Charleston Nation. You know, I
11:00
Speaker 7: will say this, the Queen, the Queen, we ever regot
11:04
Speaker 7: a queen, we have ever regota Queen's Yeah, I will
11:07
Speaker 7: say that. It is what is so special seeing that
11:10
Speaker 7: Amy from across the room and what we have seen
11:13
Speaker 7: collected in this room is regatta. Everybody loves to go
11:19
Speaker 7: to the all fired up barbecue challenge, everybody loves to
11:21
Speaker 7: go to ternal races and funeral bretten, the Wiener Dog
11:23
Speaker 7: and the Duckies and the great music. That is not
11:27
Speaker 7: what it is about. It's just not. It is about
11:30
Speaker 7: being together making memories. Because you don't keep something like
11:33
Speaker 7: that unless it was a connection, a good time you
11:38
Speaker 7: had with your spouse or your kiddos or your family.
11:42
Speaker 7: That's why you keep things like that. That is why
11:44
Speaker 7: that room is filled with things that people have kept
11:47
Speaker 7: because it was important to them, because of a moment
11:51
Speaker 7: they had together, and I think that's what is really
11:54
Speaker 7: really special about the Charleston stern Will Regatta.
11:56
Speaker 10: Well, I can kind of talk to that.
11:58
Speaker 7: Yeah, hit us.
12:00
Speaker 8: Funny story, Uh, my parents met on my dad's boat
12:04
Speaker 8: at Regatta of eighty two and my birthday happens to
12:08
Speaker 8: be nine months after regatta. So when Amy's talked about
12:16
Speaker 8: bringing back regatta, she even mentioned the regatta babies that
12:19
Speaker 8: were just kids at regatta and I think I may
12:21
Speaker 8: have said I might be the official regatta you are,
12:25
Speaker 8: yees I before.
12:28
Speaker 11: Like my very first memories my grandmother taking me to
12:32
Speaker 11: the funeral parade, and just it gives you all the
12:37
Speaker 11: fuels every time. That to me, Like I think our
12:41
Speaker 11: certain events resonate with people in different ways, and that
12:44
Speaker 11: that one for me.
12:46
Speaker 10: My aunt.
12:46
Speaker 8: I bought my late aunt's home and you know, they
12:51
Speaker 8: they brought it to me before they put on the
12:52
Speaker 8: market or anything, so it wasn't completely cleaned out, and
12:55
Speaker 8: I kind of grew up with my cousins there, and
12:57
Speaker 8: she loved the funeral parade. She get mad at my
13:00
Speaker 8: dad if she couldn't get off the boat in time
13:02
Speaker 8: with away from family to go up and get dressed.
13:04
Speaker 8: But when I bought the house. In her closet upstairs,
13:08
Speaker 8: there were still two umbrellas that she had decorated with
13:11
Speaker 8: fringe and glitter and sequins and everything that were still
13:14
Speaker 8: in the in the in the closet. My cousin in
13:17
Speaker 8: Lexington has them.
13:18
Speaker 7: I bet you have to go to a commercial break
13:19
Speaker 7: very soon. But I'm gonna go ahead and say this
13:22
Speaker 7: this is and I'll help wrap up this segment by
13:25
Speaker 7: just saying this. Last night when I was getting home
13:26
Speaker 7: late and I just had walked through the door and
13:30
Speaker 7: I turned around and I heard something at my front door,
13:32
Speaker 7: and my camera went off, like someone's here at the door.
13:36
Speaker 7: And I see this little girl with her mom and
13:39
Speaker 7: they're taping things to my front door. Did you see
13:42
Speaker 7: it on Facebook? And I go out and it is
13:45
Speaker 7: a little girl named Sammy who was in the funeral
13:47
Speaker 7: parade with me last year. She stands about this tall.
13:50
Speaker 7: She's just as sweet as she can be. And she
13:53
Speaker 7: did for me hand painted hand drawn signs and hearts
13:58
Speaker 7: I love the regatta, a little stern wheeler and said
14:02
Speaker 7: thank you for making a fun regatta for our city.
14:05
Speaker 7: I love you, may Or Amy, and had like a
14:07
Speaker 7: little flag and little sunshine smiling. She loves the regatta.
14:11
Speaker 7: It means something to her.
14:13
Speaker 6: You're going to make me cry.
14:14
Speaker 7: I spent all day yesterday with her mom doing that
14:17
Speaker 7: and said I want to go and thank her and
14:20
Speaker 7: surprise her because it has such an impact on her
14:23
Speaker 7: in the funeral parade, being with her little girlfriends that
14:26
Speaker 7: are this tall. That is why we brought regatta back.
14:30
Speaker 7: It's her event. It's no longer our event, It's her event.
14:33
Speaker 6: I love that, Absolutely love that. It's about community. Yeah,
14:40
Speaker 6: big Ley Wiggly Pigley Hotline three oh four, three four
14:43
Speaker 6: five fifty eight fifty eight. Tony the Taylor texts three
14:45
Speaker 6: oh four nine three five five, Zerra zero eight and Evan,
14:49
Speaker 6: we we want to talk to you. We haven't talked
14:50
Speaker 6: about to you about the Youth Barbecue Challenge.
14:53
Speaker 11: Absolutely so today is the All Fired Up Kids Barbecue
14:57
Speaker 11: Contest Capital Market. It's of all the events that we
15:00
Speaker 11: do throughout the year at the Market, this one's one
15:01
Speaker 11: of my favorite because it really embodies the three pillars
15:04
Speaker 11: of our mission. Is a nonprofit and that is working
15:07
Speaker 11: with West Virginia farmers, supporting small businesses and really creating
15:11
Speaker 11: a community space. Nice and so for those that haven't been.
15:15
Speaker 11: This is a youth focused culinary contests. What are the
15:19
Speaker 11: ages sixteen and under? Okay, we give them a one
15:23
Speaker 11: hundred dollars Capital Market gift card thirty minutes to go,
15:26
Speaker 11: so it's kind of like supermarket sweep meets iron Chef
15:29
Speaker 11: and then they have an hour and a half to
15:32
Speaker 11: come back and prepare their meal. We're very fortunate that
15:35
Speaker 11: year after year, Chef Paul continues to coach them along
15:39
Speaker 11: and if you haven't been, you got to see it.
15:42
Speaker 10: It's a lot of fun.
15:43
Speaker 6: Awesome, we'll do that and I'm getting the you gotta
15:45
Speaker 6: go on a break thing? Okay. So the Dave Blancho
15:48
Speaker 6: on five eighty Live is brought to you in part
15:49
Speaker 6: by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds. The
15:52
Speaker 6: Birds continue their homestand home stand against Lexington tonight, and
15:56

Speaker 15: Saturday's at one on the Voice of Charleston five eighty wchs.
18:08
Speaker 6: Heck. Welcome back to five ad w c HS the
18:11
Speaker 6: Voice of Charleston. It's the Dave Allen Show. I'm Amy
18:14
Speaker 6: Breedlove filling in for him today. We're talking all things Charleston,
18:17
Speaker 6: Stern Wheel, Regatta, and Matthew Sutton is now in the
18:21
Speaker 6: studio with me from Gino's Pizza and Spaghetti House. Young
18:25
Speaker 6: It's the Stern Wheel Slamberrey.
18:28
Speaker 10: Absolutely.
18:28
Speaker 16: Yeah, the stern Wall Slambury is is on Saturday. We're
18:31
Speaker 16: gonna actual start about three pm. Uh, it'll last a
18:35
Speaker 16: couple of hours. But this is actually the third Slamberry
18:37
Speaker 16: that we've had. So when we when Mark Goodwin brought
18:40
Speaker 16: the Regatta back a couple of years or four years ago,
18:44
Speaker 16: we had kind of a little test run and then Latin.
18:46
Speaker 16: Then the second year we actually put the Slambury on
18:49
Speaker 16: for for real and it was a great success. Is
18:52
Speaker 16: an outfit called Regatta Professional Wrestling and we've kind of
18:54
Speaker 16: branded ourselves to be around there.
18:56
Speaker 4: Reg Gotta.
18:56
Speaker 16: We run three events a year, but the slam Berry
18:58
Speaker 16: is our marquee event. So this year we are super
19:01
Speaker 16: excited to have wrestling legend Buff Bagwell come and be
19:05
Speaker 16: kind of our MC. If anybody who knows wrestling knows
19:08
Speaker 16: the Buff Bagwell was a huge part of the nWo.
19:11
Speaker 16: If you're in your mid forties like i am, and
19:13
Speaker 16: wrestling was part of your life as a high schooler,
19:15
Speaker 16: you're gonna you're gonna know that him. We've got a
19:18
Speaker 16: lot of other amazing local talents, but the most important
19:22
Speaker 16: thing that's going on for wrestling that day is our
19:25
Speaker 16: our regarda professional wrestling champion. Bishop Baylor has been champion
19:29
Speaker 16: for seven hundred and thirty five days. Yeah, it's one
19:33
Speaker 16: of the longest streaks in wrestling, and he's got probably
19:37
Speaker 16: his toughest challenge. He is the longest raigning champion. But
19:40
Speaker 16: he is not the first champion. The first champion was
19:42
Speaker 16: actually a gentleman named Troy Parker. Troy won the championship
19:46
Speaker 16: and then later that night do a contract we'll call
19:50
Speaker 16: it a little sneaky contract stipulation the Bishop had put in.
19:53
Speaker 16: He actually ended up beating Troy that night, won the
19:56
Speaker 16: belt and has held it ever since. And Troy's looking
19:58
Speaker 16: to get that back in a triple threat match with
20:00
Speaker 16: with Bishop and and No Array. It's going to be
20:03
Speaker 16: a really exciting event. I mean, you know, there are
20:05
Speaker 16: those of us who who are who are kids at heart,
20:09
Speaker 16: who have loved wrestling our entire lives, and we'll continue
20:11
Speaker 16: to love wrestling. But really what this is about is
20:14
Speaker 16: not only showcasing local talent.
20:16
Speaker 7: UH.
20:17
Speaker 16: West Virginia has an amazing, amazing independent wrestling scene. Most
20:22
Speaker 16: most people know it led by a guy named Gary
20:24
Speaker 16: Damren who runs All Star Wrestling down in Beckley and
20:27
Speaker 16: Madison in that area. And we've learned a lot from
20:30
Speaker 16: Gary and and he just got done putting his biggest
20:33
Speaker 16: event on the year called the Bash in Beckley. Uh
20:35
Speaker 16: and then you know, it's just really spawned from him
20:38
Speaker 16: and a lot of others who have who've worked really hard.
20:40
Speaker 16: Adam Harris, who most folks know, I think he was
20:42
Speaker 16: only Dave earlier this week, and he's kind of leads
20:46
Speaker 16: to Regatta show. But it's really about just having an
20:51
Speaker 16: event that adds to Regatta as the I heard the
20:54
Speaker 16: Marra and Josh talk about, you know, creating those memories.
20:57
Speaker 2: It really is.
20:57
Speaker 16: I mean, we have kids of all ages who come out.
20:59
Speaker 16: We love creating new wrestling fans. That's actually our favorite
21:02
Speaker 16: thing to do. If you let any anybody who has
21:05
Speaker 16: been a lifelong wrestling fan talk about it for any
21:08
Speaker 16: period of time, they're going to just they're going to
21:09
Speaker 16: go on and on. So I'll stop here in a
21:10
Speaker 16: second because we've got other events to talk about. But
21:13
Speaker 16: the most exciting thing about it is it does get
21:16
Speaker 16: to It gets people who can't go to other shows.
21:19
Speaker 16: It's completely free, you can come down. It's this year's
21:21
Speaker 16: for the first time ever first two years we did it,
21:24
Speaker 16: it was ats slack clause, City Center slack clause. This
21:26
Speaker 16: year for the first time ever, and people have wanted
21:28
Speaker 16: to do it for a long time. But we're actually
21:29
Speaker 16: going to wrestle on the Riverfront down and hat at
21:31
Speaker 16: Riverfront Park, so we're going to be right in front
21:32
Speaker 16: of the stage.
21:33
Speaker 10: You're going to get to be in the bowl.
21:35
Speaker 6: Yeah, I heard it grew when I was here the
21:37
Speaker 6: other day observing. It's like it's really grown and there's
21:40
Speaker 6: going to be about forty chairs.
21:42
Speaker 10: I think, yeah, well, then have the chairs.
21:44
Speaker 16: You can bring your own chair, and then obviously you'll
21:45
Speaker 16: be able to fill in the bowl in the concrete seats,
21:48
Speaker 16: and it really is going to be fun. And then
21:50
Speaker 16: the good thing about it this year is is that
21:52
Speaker 16: being down sort of in the main, we gotta footprint.
21:55
Speaker 16: The fans will be able to go to the vendors,
21:57
Speaker 16: get some, get some food, get some and lemonades. I
22:00
Speaker 16: was just over talking to Butch. He's got lemonade ready
22:03
Speaker 16: for the kids. And it's just going to be really exciting,
22:05
Speaker 16: fun event that not only highlights local wrestling, but just
22:09
Speaker 16: brings people together. Wrestling is about community, just like everything else.
22:13
Speaker 16: With the regatta, and we couldn't do it without Gino's
22:15
Speaker 16: Pizza and Spaghetti House. They've been our sponsor now two
22:17
Speaker 16: years in a row and it's been really great to us,
22:19
Speaker 16: not only as a sponsor but also a partner. They
22:23
Speaker 16: provide us some pizzas for our wrestlers, but they also
22:25
Speaker 16: provide some props for us to be able to bring
22:28
Speaker 16: into the wrestling shows. So it's going to be really exciting.
22:30
Speaker 16: I suggest people come out. It's right leading into the
22:34
Speaker 16: amazing entertainment Saturday night with Shalam who takes the stage
22:37
Speaker 16: at six point thirty, and then bust A Rhymes who
22:39
Speaker 16: takes the stage around eight. You know, all that timed
22:42
Speaker 16: out perfectly. If you've got you know, the day to
22:45
Speaker 16: come spend with us, it's the perfect thing to do,
22:48
Speaker 16: right go to the funeral parade, walk down, get some drinks,
22:52
Speaker 16: get something to eat, come sit down and have ad
22:54
Speaker 16: go right into wrestling and then right into the concerts.
22:57
Speaker 16: It's a full day downtown and we're really excit aut
23:00
Speaker 16: it and it's gonna be it really is. We got
23:02
Speaker 16: six we got six matches on the card and it's
23:04
Speaker 16: something a little bit of something for everybody. We've got
23:06
Speaker 16: our women's champion, Micah who's going to be there defending
23:08
Speaker 16: her belt. We have the Appalachian Championship, Wrestling International Championship
23:12
Speaker 16: is going to be on the line as well in
23:13
Speaker 16: a triple threat match. So it's going to be a
23:15
Speaker 16: lot of fun and it is for those of us
23:19
Speaker 16: who have watched our whole life, it brings back a
23:21
Speaker 16: lot of memories. And for those of us who are
23:22
Speaker 16: those who are just now getting into wrestling, it's something
23:24
Speaker 16: that they can enjoy. I love just coming seeing the
23:27
Speaker 16: kids want photographs with the wrestlers, get their autographs. It
23:29
Speaker 16: just it brings me back to when I was that
23:30
Speaker 16: age getting to watch wrestling. It's it's a lot of
23:32
Speaker 16: fun again.
23:33
Speaker 6: Community and that that that warmy fuzzy feeling that you
23:37
Speaker 6: get with all of the events that you grow up with.
23:40
Speaker 16: Yeah, and I think too, it's just really it's enjoyable.
23:42
Speaker 16: There's a really strong wrestling community.
23:45
Speaker 17: You know.
23:45
Speaker 16: Last late last year, there was a documentary called Grappalachia
23:48
Speaker 16: that came out on West Junia Public Broadcasting.
23:50
Speaker 10: To watch that, Yeah, it's really it's about thirty minutes long.
23:52
Speaker 10: Guy and Troy Ray can put it together.
23:54
Speaker 16: Local Guy he went around all the wrestling scenes, Summer Regatta,
23:57
Speaker 16: professional wrestling stuff, and it's just a really good insight
24:01
Speaker 16: into not only the wrestlers, but also the fans and.
24:03
Speaker 10: The people who enjoy it.
24:05
Speaker 16: You know, I've gone I've gone down to Madison a
24:09
Speaker 16: couple of times to watch wrestl and I've gone down
24:11
Speaker 16: to Beckley. And what's really interesting and fun about it
24:14
Speaker 16: is like he you know, character from Charleston or Madison
24:17
Speaker 16: or Beckley or Bluefield or wherever you're from. Everybody's just
24:20
Speaker 16: there being together and enjoying the wrestling. And it's almost
24:23
Speaker 16: like you might not know the person sitting besides you,
24:25
Speaker 16: but we're all on the same page when it comes
24:26
Speaker 16: to who were cheering four who were booing against what
24:29
Speaker 16: we want to see happen, And it really is wrestling
24:31
Speaker 16: isn't really about bringing people together.
24:33
Speaker 6: Absolutely the Big Lee Pigley Wigglely Hotline three oh four
24:36
Speaker 6: three four five fifty eight fifty eight, Tony the Taylor
24:38
Speaker 6: Text three O four nine three five five zero zero eight.
24:42
Speaker 6: And we do have a caller on the line, Mike
24:46
Speaker 6: Hopefully story button, Hello, Hello, how are you? You are
24:50
Speaker 6: speaking to Amy bred Love And also Matthew Sutton.
24:54
Speaker 9: Okay, great, great, good, good to talk to you. I
24:56
Speaker 9: love the conversation.
24:58
Speaker 11: Listen.
24:58
Speaker 9: I lived in and breed the regatta back in the
25:02
Speaker 9: eighties and early nineties. I missed the I missed I
25:07
Speaker 9: missed the Labor daytime. And I heard the mayor talking
25:12
Speaker 9: about Nelson Jones, of the young man who who created
25:17
Speaker 9: the regatta. He liked the Labor daytime because it was
25:21
Speaker 9: a good way to end the summer. But with that said,
25:25
Speaker 9: I love the regatta. We used to actually wait with
25:29
Speaker 9: our chairs in front of the stage to let mister
25:34
Speaker 9: Cartoon did his Yes, mister Cartoon, he was wonderful, and
25:41
Speaker 9: we would all hover around him with our chairs because
25:44
Speaker 9: as soon as he was finished, we were allowed to
25:47
Speaker 9: set our tears up in front of the stage because
25:50
Speaker 9: back then, of course, the concerts were just phenomenal.
25:54
Speaker 6: Mike, what was your very first regatta?
25:57
Speaker 9: Oh, it had to be back in Well. I moved
26:02
Speaker 9: here in nineteen August of nineteen seventy four from New
26:06
Speaker 9: Jersey to go to college at Mars Harvey. So that
26:10
Speaker 9: was my first regatta because I remember my parents left
26:15
Speaker 9: me there and the regatta was I'm pretty sure it
26:19
Speaker 9: was just getting ready to get started back in seventy four,
26:24
Speaker 9: so right away there at Labor Day they had a celebration.
26:27
Speaker 9: If it wasn't seventy four, it was right after that.
26:30
Speaker 9: Of course I was in college. But then later in
26:34
Speaker 9: the eighties when I got older and I started teaching,
26:40
Speaker 9: went to the regatta a lot. And one other thing
26:43
Speaker 9: before I get off. Nobody has mentioned Justice William Brotherton,
26:50
Speaker 9: who was back then. He was he ran the regatta.
26:56
Speaker 9: He was the head of the regatta. He was an unofficial,
27:00
Speaker 9: you know, he wasn't a paid person. He and his
27:03
Speaker 9: wife were were mainstays for the regatta. He he loved it,
27:07
Speaker 9: he breathed it, he brought he brought so much to
27:11
Speaker 9: the regatta.
27:12
Speaker 6: And I was young, but I do remember his name.
27:17
Speaker 9: Justice William Brotherton, and and nobody's talked about him, and
27:21
Speaker 9: and and I just want to keep I have so
27:24
Speaker 9: many memories and thoughts we have to Uh, Mayor Amy
27:28
Speaker 9: has done wonderful bringing it back. I also want to
27:33
Speaker 9: put a little curve in it that past mayors have
27:37
Speaker 9: been the ones that killed the regatta. Well, starting with
27:45
Speaker 9: Mayor Melton who stopped the beer okay, and then Mayor
27:51
Speaker 9: Gardner who fired Justice Brotherton and then finally Danny Jones
27:59
Speaker 9: Uh during his administration stopped the regatta permanently.
28:04
Speaker 6: And I wonderful Mayor brought it back.
28:07
Speaker 2: Yeah, I think.
28:08
Speaker 9: Wonderful Amy has brought it back the wrong time, at
28:11
Speaker 9: the wrong time of year, but she has.
28:13
Speaker 4: I think.
28:14
Speaker 16: I think a couple of things. I think a couple
28:15
Speaker 16: of things. Mike and and so I'm I'm the chief
28:18
Speaker 16: of staff in americand one, so I was. I've been
28:20
Speaker 16: with her since she took office. So a couple of
28:22
Speaker 16: things to point out. And first of all, thank you
28:24
Speaker 16: for bringing up Justice Brotherton because we need to.
28:26
Speaker 10: We need to do that.
28:27
Speaker 16: And if you are, if you do get a chance
28:28
Speaker 16: to get around I think they talked about it earlier.
28:30
Speaker 16: We do have a display inside the four Points. It's
28:32
Speaker 16: like a historic display of stuff from I got a pass.
28:35
Speaker 9: Interrupt something that I want. I'm sorry, but I have
28:39
Speaker 9: I have his Stros hat that to me. Yes, it's
28:43
Speaker 9: a cowboy hat and it's from Stros and it was
28:46
Speaker 9: his hat that when I get a chance, I want to.
28:49
Speaker 9: I want to give it to that. The museum that
28:52
Speaker 9: you all, I guess are start the regatta museum that started.
28:56
Speaker 10: Yeah, ahead, no, I think that that'd be that'd be great.
28:59
Speaker 10: That's what we're trying to collect for the Regatta Museum
29:02
Speaker 10: and put out there. But a couple of things.
29:03
Speaker 16: One is is that I do think you know, one
29:06
Speaker 16: of the big things that when when Mary good decided
29:08
Speaker 16: to bring back to Regatta we started with was the
29:10
Speaker 16: date and when the Charleston Stern Wore re Gotta stopped.
29:16
Speaker 16: Then Marietta picked up the Labor Day weekend day for
29:20
Speaker 16: the Stern Wheelers and and because it was the end
29:23
Speaker 16: of the year and they wanted something to do. So
29:24
Speaker 16: when we went to the first people we went to
29:26
Speaker 16: was the Stern Wheelers and said, hey, what do you
29:28
Speaker 16: think about bringing back to Regatta. They said, oh yes,
29:30
Speaker 16: And we said what about Labor Day, said, we can't
29:32
Speaker 16: do Labor Day. If you do it, then we can't come.
29:34
Speaker 16: And we believe if it's going to be the Charleston
29:36
Speaker 16: Stern world we gotta, then it's got to be. It's
29:38
Speaker 16: got to be the Charleston Stern Wore we re gotta.
29:39
Speaker 16: The Stern Wheelers have to be here. And that's where
29:41
Speaker 16: the July fourth, that's where the July fourth came date
29:44
Speaker 16: came into So don't you know that we looked at
29:47
Speaker 16: the Labor Day, but this is about the Stern Wheelers,
29:50
Speaker 16: so that's where the July fourth weekend came into. The
29:52
Speaker 16: other thing, too, is is that you know, we're we've
29:54
Speaker 16: we've really made sure we try to learn from stuff
29:57
Speaker 16: that's happened in the past. And no no blame to anybody,
30:00
Speaker 16: but we looked at it. We looked at how long
30:02
Speaker 16: the regatta was, and we didn't feel like that we
30:04
Speaker 16: couldn't make a ten day event anymore. So that's why
30:06
Speaker 16: it shrunk down. Part of the things you looked at
30:09
Speaker 16: when you talked about the beer sales being stopped, one
30:11
Speaker 16: of the things that we decided was to end the
30:12
Speaker 16: regatta earlier in the evening.
30:14
Speaker 10: We learned pretty quickly.
30:15
Speaker 16: From all the events that we've run, if you last
30:17
Speaker 16: passed nine thirty, maybe ten o'clock, then you're just asking
30:20
Speaker 16: for trouble. We've also beefed up security with the Charleston
30:23
Speaker 16: Police Department, so you know, we've tried to learn from
30:25
Speaker 16: everything that's gone on in the past, but at the
30:28
Speaker 16: same time making it honoring the past but also bringing
30:31
Speaker 16: in new things like wrestling being one that that is
30:34
Speaker 16: something different.
30:35
Speaker 10: That we can continue to add to, but it really is.
30:37
Speaker 16: I mean, the Regatta really is something that honors Charleston's history,
30:42
Speaker 16: the Starning Wheeler history, but really trying to also make
30:46
Speaker 16: it new for this generation because I think one of
30:49
Speaker 16: the things too is, you know, when I was a
30:50
Speaker 16: young kid, my parents worked the our church's booth that
30:53
Speaker 16: was there, you know, selling hot dogs and things like that.
30:55
Speaker 16: Those are the memories that I have, and we want
30:57
Speaker 16: to make sure that kids who were you know, eight, ten,
31:00
Speaker 16: twelve years old when they're you know, forty five sitting
31:02
Speaker 16: here is having the opportunity and the honor to work
31:05
Speaker 16: for a mayor. They're sitting here, remember and they're regatta
31:07
Speaker 16: that they've got something to lean back to, and that's
31:08
Speaker 16: what this is really about, so trying to create those
31:11
Speaker 16: new memories for them as well. I think a lot
31:12
Speaker 16: of times, you know, we all lean on to the
31:16
Speaker 16: what we remember and forget that we're trying to create
31:19
Speaker 16: new memories for people, and that's really what we're trying
31:21
Speaker 16: to do here. So appreciate everything, and I think please
31:23
Speaker 16: come down and see the regarding museum.
31:24
Speaker 10: It's really cool. I walked in there yesterday to see that.
31:27
Speaker 10: I walked in yesterday and.
31:28
Speaker 4: I was really in awe.
31:28
Speaker 16: I've seen the pieces individually, but I hadn't seen them
31:31
Speaker 16: as a whole. And it really is it really is
31:33
Speaker 16: cool and it takes you back. And I looked at
31:34
Speaker 16: something I said, Man, we had to remake that T
31:36
Speaker 16: shirt or we had to redo that cup. It's just
31:38
Speaker 16: really really cool stuff in there, and it's really worth
31:41
Speaker 16: a stop just to see and to get some stuff
31:45
Speaker 16: from the past because it brings back a lot of
31:47
Speaker 16: memories and then you go out to the boulevard and
31:48
Speaker 16: you start.
31:48
Speaker 10: Making new memories.
31:50
Speaker 6: Well I heard about.
31:51
Speaker 10: It though, was listening this is it.
31:52
Speaker 6: Yeah, so the brochure from I'm guessing nineteen eighty four.
31:54
Speaker 6: But yeah, seeing the logos from the local businesses Denis
31:58
Speaker 6: is always fun. Thank you for your call, Mike, And uh, yeah,
32:02
Speaker 6: I'm excited about the drone show. Speaking of new things,
32:06
Speaker 6: that's very exciting on Sunday at nine.
32:10
Speaker 8: Yeah.
32:10
Speaker 16: So yeah, with WVU WVU Hospitals and Thomas Hospitals. The
32:16
Speaker 16: one of the things is they they again wanted to
32:18
Speaker 16: dry something different and they had sponsored the fireworks last
32:20
Speaker 16: year and kind of talked about a drone show and
32:23
Speaker 16: then we were a little like, well can we pull
32:25
Speaker 16: this off?
32:25
Speaker 10: How can we pull this off?
32:27
Speaker 2: And then.
32:28
Speaker 16: Thomas Hospitals and doctor Rosen Krantz and his team sponsored
32:32
Speaker 16: the the drone show that we had at Holly Jolly
32:35
Speaker 16: Browlely and it went over really well.
32:38
Speaker 6: That's right. I saw that on Facebook.
32:39
Speaker 10: Yeah, so that was about that was one hundred drones.
32:41
Speaker 10: I think this one's gonna be two hundred.
32:43
Speaker 16: It's gonna be over the river, and it's gonna be
32:45
Speaker 16: really fun it you know, not to not to kind
32:47
Speaker 16: of give it away, but it's gonna be a nice
32:48
Speaker 16: little recap of the regatta as it happened, but really
32:53
Speaker 16: be really fun and be something different. We thought it
32:55
Speaker 16: would be great to end with. So you're gonna want
32:57
Speaker 16: to be out on the boulevard. You get to listen
33:00
Speaker 16: to the to the great music from Jefferson Starship and
33:03
Speaker 16: then and then have the show as soon as they
33:05
Speaker 16: in probably about nine thirty, and I gotta wait for
33:07
Speaker 16: it to get dark enough. But yeah, fire works on
33:10
Speaker 16: Friday night, which is going to be great. And then
33:11
Speaker 16: Friday night right around nine thirty after Casey in the
33:15
Speaker 16: Sunshine Band, and then the drone show and then the
33:17
Speaker 16: drone show on Sunday is a nice is a nice
33:21
Speaker 16: end to it all and something that.
33:23
Speaker 10: We're trying this year.
33:23
Speaker 16: And again we couldn't have We couldn't have done it
33:25
Speaker 16: without the without the support of WU Medicine and Thomas Hospitals.
33:30
Speaker 10: They really led to charge on this one.
33:33
Speaker 6: Yes, thanks to all the sponsors. And we have got
33:35

Speaker 6: forty three. We're talking everything Charleston sternwheel Regatta within like
36:32
Speaker 6: fifteen minutes. It kicks off with the Vellie Gems sternwheel
36:36
Speaker 6: boat rides down at Hatted Riverfront Park and here in
36:40
Speaker 6: the studio with me now Matthew Sutton is hanging out
36:42
Speaker 6: and we have Jeff Pearson now as well.
36:44
Speaker 4: Hello, good morning, good morning, how are you.
36:46
Speaker 6: I'm great, How are you doing well?
36:47
Speaker 4: Ready to do this?
36:48
Speaker 7: I know?
36:49
Speaker 6: So exciting?
36:50
Speaker 11: Right?
36:50
Speaker 6: Yes, so you're with the funeral Parade workshop and copa's participation.
36:56
Speaker 6: Tell me more about that.
36:57
Speaker 9: Sure.
36:57
Speaker 4: So CPA COPA we call it is a Charleston Office
37:00
Speaker 4: of Public Art.
37:01
Speaker 19: So our day job is murals and sculptures and taking
37:05
Speaker 19: care of the public art around Charleston. For Regatta, we're
37:08
Speaker 19: working with the Funeral Parade and the Family Fund Zone.
37:10
Speaker 19: What we're doing with those things is kind of bringing
37:12
Speaker 19: art to those things through community art projects, make and
37:15
Speaker 19: take art. We're bringing a group called Fluidity Performance Group.
37:20
Speaker 6: Yes, I wanted to know about that sounds really cool.
37:23
Speaker 19: Yeah, So Fluidity is a kids who solele.
37:27
Speaker 6: That's the word I was trying to think of.
37:29
Speaker 19: Yes, error Lists and stilt walkers still have these incredible
37:33
Speaker 19: themes and costumes. They'll actually go be doing a workshop
37:36
Speaker 19: with kids for error Lists on both on Friday and Saturday,
37:41
Speaker 19: and they will be.
37:41
Speaker 4: Part of our funeral parade as well. But we're really
37:43
Speaker 4: excited about that.
37:44
Speaker 6: That sounds so great. And what are the ages that
37:46
Speaker 6: kids can join in any age.
37:48
Speaker 19: Pretty much any age they have on the on our
37:50
Speaker 19: Facebook page, we have a little bit of kind of
37:52
Speaker 19: what the know before you go on the City of
37:54
Speaker 19: Charleston's off to the Public Art facebook page. There's a
37:56
Speaker 19: little bit about Fluidity and what to expect, and also
37:59
Speaker 19: their web site is incredibly thorough about when they're coming
38:02
Speaker 19: to a town, what they what people can expect before
38:06
Speaker 19: they come to see him, and what they do.
38:08
Speaker 6: Essentially, gotcha and let's see. So we have that on
38:12
Speaker 6: both Saturday and Yeah.
38:15
Speaker 4: So they're gonna be with us all day Friday and Saturday.
38:17
Speaker 7: Yeah, Okay.
38:18
Speaker 19: The workshop on uh Friday is going to be at
38:21
Speaker 19: two thirty. Yeah, and then the workshop on Saturday will
38:26
Speaker 19: be I think it's four.
38:28
Speaker 4: Well to check out, there's one. There's one at four
38:30
Speaker 4: as well.
38:30
Speaker 6: So, oh, we have twelve forty five.
38:32
Speaker 4: Yeah, there's performances at twelve forty five and that Slack Plaza. Yeah.
38:36
Speaker 19: All this will be at City Center at Slack Plaza,
38:37
Speaker 19: the kid a Family Fund Zone. In addition to Fluidity,
38:41
Speaker 19: we have caricatures by Rob Cleland. We have a magician
38:45
Speaker 19: and comedian Joey Stepp. We have not mister but professor
38:50
Speaker 19: bubble maker. He got his degree. Yeah, yeah, he is incredible.
38:54
Speaker 19: It's it's kind of exactly what it sounds like.
38:56
Speaker 4: This is this guy. He comes in and he does.
38:58
Speaker 19: Incredible stuff with bubbles. He will put people inside bubbles.
39:01
Speaker 19: He's a whole bubble show.
39:02
Speaker 6: I want to be inside a bubble.
39:03
Speaker 4: You have to come down. He'll put you in one.
39:04
Speaker 10: He'll be there.
39:05
Speaker 4: Yeah, he does it. This is his fourth year with us.
39:08
Speaker 19: He's with us the entire run of our the regatta
39:11
Speaker 19: each year. He kind of ups the ante a little
39:13
Speaker 19: bit as much as you can do with bubbles, but
39:15
Speaker 19: he does. I mean, he makes bubbles. So it's such
39:17
Speaker 19: an incredible thing. It's it's incredible.
39:20
Speaker 6: That's just too cool. Big Lee Wiggly Piggly Hotline three
39:23
Speaker 6: oh four three four five fifty eight fifty eight. Tony
39:25
Speaker 6: the Taylor Text three four nine three five five zero
39:28
Speaker 6: zero eight. I Mamy Breed Love in for the for
39:30
Speaker 6: Dave Allen, The Dave Allen Show, Talking Charleston Sternwheel Regatta
39:34
Speaker 6: and the Skate the Skate Park two is amazing. I'm
39:40
Speaker 6: so glad that that is here. My husband wishes that
39:42
Speaker 6: that was here when he was growing up because he
39:44
Speaker 6: was a big skateboard kid walking around town with the
39:46
Speaker 6: skateboard and skateboard clinics happening and an open skate on Sunday.
39:52
Speaker 10: Yeah, we're really excited.
39:53
Speaker 16: So the skate park was an idea that meryorhead and
39:56
Speaker 16: probably five years ago, I think is when we ended
39:58
Speaker 16: up actually working in park tarnering with the Western Department
40:01
Speaker 16: of Highways because it's under their interstate and it's really
40:04
Speaker 16: just taken off. I mean, if you go over there
40:06
Speaker 16: anytime during the day, especially in the evening times, the
40:08
Speaker 16: skate park has packed. So when when we brought to
40:11
Speaker 16: Regatta back, we had to include the skate park, and
40:13
Speaker 16: we've got some amazing local local folks who who really
40:17
Speaker 16: help put on good clinics for kids, and it really
40:19
Speaker 16: ends up being one of the things that kids have
40:21
Speaker 16: a lot of fun with. And a nice thing this
40:22
Speaker 16: year is I think they're going to be a little
40:23
Speaker 16: bit outside of the skate park and they're going to
40:25
Speaker 16: do kind of a run up and down the boulevard
40:27
Speaker 16: as well. So it's gonna be it's gonna be fun.
40:29
Speaker 16: It's all it's all tied in, and I think that
40:31
Speaker 16: the one thing that the Jeff Kind of kind of
40:34
Speaker 16: left out.
40:36
Speaker 4: You know.
40:36
Speaker 16: First of all, I think that don't don't ever let
40:38
Speaker 16: Jeff under sell what the Office of Public Art and
40:41
Speaker 16: Charleston does. Over the last five years, they've done one
40:43
Speaker 16: hundred and thirty six public art projects and the number's
40:45
Speaker 16: probably grown higher than that over the last few few months.
40:48
Speaker 16: So it's an incredible asset to the city of Charleston.
40:50
Speaker 16: Whenever you see public art, it's one of the things
40:52
Speaker 16: where you know, we can do tours in our city
40:54
Speaker 16: about about all of the art, and we do do
40:56
Speaker 16: tours and people come here and look for it, so
40:58
Speaker 16: it is it's an amazing Yeah, Mortarman and all of
41:01
Speaker 16: the different little activities in our projects throughout the entire city,
41:06
Speaker 16: both big and small, is very important. But with public Art,
41:09
Speaker 16: the big deal about what they do is working with
41:11
Speaker 16: these working with kids and the Family Fund Zone that
41:13
Speaker 16: is all free and the Family Fun Zone and sponsored
41:15
Speaker 16: by West Banco and it's entirely free. There are rides,
41:18
Speaker 16: there are you know, I won't have any kids, but
41:21
Speaker 16: there are you know, like Jupiter Jumps, and there are
41:24
Speaker 16: water slides, and there are all these arch and craft
41:26
Speaker 16: projects and all the Professor bubbles and everyone else.
41:30
Speaker 10: But it's all completely free to folks. And that's the
41:31
Speaker 10: big part about it. We wanted to do.
41:33
Speaker 16: Part of the what the REGD does is it's not
41:35
Speaker 16: just you know, a big, huge event. We have a
41:38
Speaker 16: strong mission to give back to the community and providing
41:41
Speaker 16: all these folks for free. We've got the carnival, which
41:43
Speaker 16: which you know has paid rides, but then the Family
41:45
Speaker 16: Fund Zone.
41:46
Speaker 10: Everything over there is free, yes, free, free.
41:48
Speaker 19: Fore, I think what I mentioned the community, our projects,
41:52
Speaker 19: we can engage kids. We build a six foot bird
41:55
Speaker 19: that kids will be painting feathers for and that is
41:58
Speaker 19: we're so excited about that.
41:59
Speaker 15: I love it.
42:00
Speaker 6: I love art and got to take a break. Dave

45:10
Speaker 19: the things they do they come out and do princess parties,
45:13
Speaker 19: prince and princess parties, i should say, and they come
45:15
Speaker 19: out as all the princesses and the girls, the young
45:19
Speaker 19: girls and young boys come out and dress like princes
45:21
Speaker 19: and princesses and it's just a great time. They'll be
45:24
Speaker 19: there today from twelve to two with a princess party
45:27
Speaker 19: with cupcakes and juice and sing alongs.
45:28
Speaker 4: It's gonna be a great.
45:29
Speaker 6: Time, lovely. And the young entrepreneurs, you said that started
45:34
Speaker 6: last year.
45:35
Speaker 16: The Young entrepreneurs market start last year was just kind
45:38
Speaker 16: of an idea that came out of the board meeting.
45:40
Speaker 16: We have so many folks in our community who are
45:43
Speaker 16: make crafts or they make juices, they make a lot
45:46
Speaker 16: of different things and bringing them to the regatta. Last
45:49
Speaker 16: year with just a small idea, you know, it was
45:51
Speaker 16: just a kind of a smaller tent and we had
45:53
Speaker 16: an on one.
45:54
Speaker 6: Day, kind of like a step up from the lemonade stand.
45:56
Speaker 16: Yeah, basically what I can do, Yeah, but with really
45:59
Speaker 16: cool like I think there were there some three D
46:00
Speaker 16: modeling that was going on. The kids had, I mean
46:02
Speaker 16: the technology and stuff that we didn't have, or the
46:04
Speaker 16: attention span we didn't have, I guess grown up, but
46:07
Speaker 16: as much as anything, so it was it's really cool
46:09
Speaker 16: because it was so successful last year, we took it
46:12
Speaker 16: from you know, one day to two days so it's
46:14
Speaker 16: both Friday and Saturday. And Appalachian Power came on as
46:18
Speaker 16: a sponsor this year because they saw the value of
46:20
Speaker 16: trying to support our future business leaders, and I think
46:23
Speaker 16: it's really nice. I mean, we probably have a couple
46:26
Speaker 16: dozen entrepreneurs that will be there selling their goods until
46:31
Speaker 16: they run out, and last year they did run out,
46:33
Speaker 16: and I suspect they will, oh great.
46:34
Speaker 4: Last year this young girl that was selling bracelets and
46:37
Speaker 4: the mayor bought them all.
46:38
Speaker 7: Oh that's what she meant.
46:39
Speaker 19: And she even commissioned her and bought she commissioned her
46:42
Speaker 19: for more this year. Yes, I'm also I want to
46:44
Speaker 19: mention the we also have on Friday, we have an
46:46
Speaker 19: ice cream social and we have six chalk artists coming
46:49
Speaker 19: to do street art on the chalk our street chalk art.
46:52
Speaker 6: Yeah, where the street art? Where the chalk came from?
46:56
Speaker 6: Because when I go downtown, I'm like, where did that
46:58
Speaker 6: come from? During w GOTDA?
46:59
Speaker 19: So that's it this well, this is new this year,
47:00
Speaker 19: but we're commissioning six local artists to do six three
47:04
Speaker 19: foot squares going down the center of city Center. And yeah,
47:08
Speaker 19: they'll be this firs time we're doing it and be great.
47:11
Speaker 19: So everything's in city Center. It's like Plaza Family Fund Zone.
47:16
Speaker 6: And if you get hungry, there's always the hot dog
47:18
Speaker 6: eating contest.
47:19
Speaker 16: The hot dog eating contest speaking about something that got
47:21
Speaker 16: bigger to Tutor's Biscuit World, and I think people sometimes,
47:25
Speaker 16: especially managing our Facebook page, people will be like, oh,
47:28
Speaker 16: how come it's not a biscuit eating contest?
47:29
Speaker 10: First of all, how many biscuits could you eat. But
47:32
Speaker 10: Tutors is also very well known for their hot dogs.
47:34
Speaker 6: So how many hot dogs have been eaten?
47:37
Speaker 10: I think it was what thirty last year.
47:41
Speaker 5: Like that.
47:41
Speaker 10: Yeah, so last year we had folks who came two
47:44
Speaker 10: years ago.
47:45
Speaker 16: We did it two years ago and Tutors came on
47:46
Speaker 16: board and they sponsored it, and then it got bigger
47:49
Speaker 16: last year and this year we.
47:51
Speaker 10: Had over one hundred and twenty entrants that wanted to
47:54
Speaker 10: participate and we only had like.
47:55
Speaker 16: Eight spots, so we have different heats this year, so
47:58
Speaker 16: there'll be multiple people eating.
48:00
Speaker 10: It is extremely fun.
48:02
Speaker 16: It is one of those things to where it's like,
48:04
Speaker 16: if you've never experienced the hot dog eating contests in person,
48:06
Speaker 16: you're like, I don't know, trust me, it's a boatload
48:09
Speaker 16: of fun because it is really fun to watch people
48:11
Speaker 16: stuff their face with hot dogs and try to and
48:13
Speaker 16: try to survive. And then everybody brings out their own
48:16
Speaker 16: their own individual crowd. But that's really exciting as well.
48:19
Speaker 16: And then I think you hit on it earlier, but
48:21
Speaker 16: just to touch on at the United Ways Rubber Ducky Race,
48:23
Speaker 16: when we think about the you know, we talk about
48:26
Speaker 16: the history of the Regada that is obviously a huge
48:28
Speaker 16: part of everything that has happened throughout the regatta, and
48:31
Speaker 16: the United Way raises a ton of money that goes
48:34
Speaker 16: right back into our community and that's a great thing.
48:36
Speaker 16: They'll still be out there selling ducks, I imagine that's
48:38
Speaker 16: where they're at right now, is out there selling ducks
48:41
Speaker 16: in order to make sure that they can they can
48:43
Speaker 16: raise their money. But that's going to drop noon off
48:45
Speaker 16: the south Side Bridge. And that's also really interesting to
48:47
Speaker 16: watch because I also like the mechanics of it because
48:50
Speaker 16: our fire department goes out with these big nets in
48:52
Speaker 16: order to catch all the ducks so they don't go
48:53
Speaker 16: too far but that drop and then sort of being
48:56
Speaker 16: the one to wait and see and see what duck's
49:01
Speaker 16: going to win and who's gonna win. It's a whole
49:03
Speaker 16: lot of fun and you know, and again it's it's
49:06
Speaker 16: the United Way of Central West Virginia, which is just
49:10
Speaker 16: one of the strongest partners we have in our entire community,
49:13
Speaker 16: not only for the regatta, but just in everyday world
49:15
Speaker 16: when we think about things like we've had, you know,
49:18
Speaker 16: when we had the West Side gas crisis and we
49:20
Speaker 16: have heating warming centers for folks in our community where
49:24
Speaker 16: we have long events. The first people always in line
49:27
Speaker 16: in the United Way, and and so come out and
49:29
Speaker 16: support them, not only by buying a duck, but watching
49:31
Speaker 16: the race as well, because we have I'm now told
49:35
Speaker 16: live on the air, fifteen hundred ducks left. So that's
49:37
Speaker 16: not very many considering how many that they sell overall.
49:40
Speaker 16: So make sure they'll be out on the boulevard selling
49:43
Speaker 16: the ducks until they until they run out of them.
49:45
Speaker 10: And my guess is they'll run out on them by
49:46
Speaker 10: the end of the day.
49:47
Speaker 16: So i'd get there today because they'll they'll they'll run
49:50
Speaker 16: on them pretty quick. But again I think, you know,
49:53
Speaker 16: I mean, it's it really is a wonderful weekend in
49:59
Speaker 16: our in our city, and we really are excited about it.
50:02
Speaker 16: Not only do we want you to come out to
50:04
Speaker 16: the regatta, but we want you to visit our local
50:06
Speaker 16: businesses as well. They really stock up, they participate in this.
50:09
Speaker 16: You know, having the Family Fund Zone, which is free
50:11
Speaker 16: activities over in city centers like Plaza, lends itself for
50:14
Speaker 16: people to walk into our restaurants. We walk into our bars,
50:16
Speaker 16: go to our coffee shop, get some ice cream. You know,
50:19
Speaker 16: we've got food vendors and we've got drink vendors on
50:21
Speaker 16: the boulevard. But there is enough time throughout the next
50:25
Speaker 16: four days to not only visit them, but to visit
50:27
Speaker 16: our local businesses.
50:28
Speaker 10: Check out our shops, you know.
50:29
Speaker 16: We we've got so many amazing places to go to
50:32
Speaker 16: in nice, eclectic places. You know, go see Chuck over
50:35
Speaker 16: at the Purple Moon to pick up your antiques and
50:37
Speaker 16: it's it's really you.
50:38
Speaker 10: Know, and I'll say this too. Check out the regatta website.
50:42
Speaker 16: I promise you. There are plenty of places to park.
50:44
Speaker 16: There are plenty of places to park. It's not hard
50:47
Speaker 16: to find a parking spot in downtown Ralston.
50:49
Speaker 6: The parking building right beside the library night yeah, oh yeah.
50:53
Speaker 16: Summer street garages open, the cinema garage is open, the
50:56
Speaker 16: mall garages are open, the Gazette garage, the flat lots.
50:59
Speaker 16: There are well over ten thousand parking spots to find
51:03
Speaker 16: to get into the Regatta. And so don't be scared
51:05
Speaker 16: away by that. You know, you might have to wait
51:07
Speaker 16: a few minutes, but it really is a humongous weekend
51:11
Speaker 16: in our city and a lot of work that goes
51:13
Speaker 16: into it, and a lot of sponsors, and we're just
51:16
Speaker 16: really really excited about it, and it.
51:18
Speaker 10: Looks like knock on wood.
51:20
Speaker 16: I won't be the person of jinxes, but I don't
51:22
Speaker 16: want to say the things we don't want to say,
51:24
Speaker 16: which is how pretty it is outside.
51:26
Speaker 6: Yes, don't forget to hydrate this weekend. Absolutely, and so
51:29
Speaker 6: many more things going on in regatta that we cannot
51:32
Speaker 6: get in this morning. Oh my goodness, literally a boat load.
51:35
Speaker 6: TJ's coming up next, Hi, TJ.
51:37
Speaker 4: Bhie Breaking news.
51:38
Speaker 21: The Supreme Court says today just released in their opinions
51:42
Speaker 21: list they'll hear a case about which school sports teams
51:45
Speaker 21: transgender students can join. They're hearing West Virginia versus Becky
51:51
Speaker 21: Pepper Jackson, which is a long standing case about that
51:55
Speaker 21: transgender girl in Bridgeport that runs track. Court saying they
51:59
Speaker 21: will hear this case. This of course coming on the
52:01
Speaker 21: heels of scurmetti next week, so precedent breaking news here.
52:05
Speaker 4: We'll have JB.
52:06
Speaker 21: Mccoskey coming in at ten oh six to outline the case.
52:10
Speaker 21: But the fact that the Court's going to hear this
52:11
Speaker 21: amy and releasing it today, that's big news.
52:14
Speaker 6: Stick around to hear more from TJ. And thank you
