- 0:00Dot com Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to
- 0:06kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:08I'm our host Andrew McGivern for October 20th.
- 0:11Today is International Chef's Day, a global celebration that
- 0:15honors that culinary professionals who feed the world
- 0:18and inspire us with their creativity.
- 0:20Observed annually on October 20th since 2004, this special
- 0:25day was established by the late Chef Doctor Bill Gallagher, who
- 0:30was then President of the World Association of Chef Societies
- 0:34known as World Chefs International Chefs Day isn't
- 0:39just about celebrating great food.
- 0:41It's focused on educating children worldwide about the
- 0:45importance of eating healthy, promoting the noble profession
- 0:48of chefs, and encouraging culinary professionals to give
- 0:52back to their communities. Each year, World Chefs select
- 0:56the theme to guide celebrations, with recent themes focusing on
- 1:00healthy food for future generations and sustainability.
- 1:05What makes this day special is its global reach.
- 1:09Thousands of chefs from over 100 countries participate, hosting
- 1:13cooking workshops, visiting schools, and sharing their
- 1:16passion for food. It's a reminder that chefs
- 1:19aren't just cooks, they're educators, artists, and
- 1:23guardians of both tradition and innovation in the kitchen.
- 1:26And that brings us to today's quote from renowned French chef
- 1:30Auguste Escoffier, who once said good food is the foundation of
- 1:38genuine happiness. Escoffier's observation from one
- 1:42of the most influential chefs in culinary history, I might add,
- 1:46captures something profound about the rules chef's play in
- 1:49our lives. When he talks about genuine
- 1:53happiness, he's not referring to temporary pleasure from a tasty
- 1:56meal. He's talking about the deeper
- 1:59contentment that comes from nourishment, both physical and
- 2:04emotional. Think about the role food plays
- 2:07in our most important moments. Celebrations, gatherings,
- 2:12comforting someone in distress, marking milestones.
- 2:16Food is woven into the fabric of our human experience.
- 2:20Chefs are the architects of these moments, using their
- 2:24skills and creativity to create not just meals, but memories and
- 2:30connections. Scoffier, who revolutionized
- 2:33French cuisine in the late 1800s and early 1900s, understood that
- 2:39a chef's work goes far beyond technical skill.
- 2:43Yes, they must master techniques, understand flavors,
- 2:47and manage complex kitchen operations.
- 2:51But the truly great chefs also understand that they're creating
- 2:55experiences that contribute to people's fundamental well-being
- 2:59and happiness. International Chef's Day
- 3:03celebrates this broader vision of the chef's role, not just as
- 3:07someone who feeds us, but as someone who enriches our lives
- 3:12and shapes our relationships with food, health and the
- 3:15community. We've been starting to get our
- 3:20kids to take over the cooking for one day a week each.
- 3:24It gives them some responsibility to prepare a meal
- 3:28and they get to learn recipes and cooking skills, and maybe
- 3:32that will lead them to genuine happiness, Who knows?
- 3:36But more importantly, this is three days a week that Valerie
- 3:41and I don't have to cook. And that is definitely leading
- 3:46to some measurable happiness, especially since, as it turns
- 3:50out, the kids are pretty darn good chefs.
- 3:53So today, honor International Chefs Day by recognizing the
- 3:57chefs in your life. Whether it's the professional
- 4:01chef at your favorite restaurant, a home cook who
- 4:05feeds your family with love, or even your own efforts in the
- 4:09kitchen, acknowledge the important work of feeding people
- 4:13well. Remember Escapier's wisdom, Good
- 4:18food isn't a luxury, it's foundational to human happiness,
- 4:22and those who dedicate their lives to creating it deserve our
- 4:26recognition and appreciation. That's going to do it.
- 4:31For today. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off
