- 1:23Now let's get this hour started.
- 1:26Welcome to the around the House show, your trusted source for everything about your home.
- 1:31I'm Eric G.
- 1:31Thanks for joining me today.
- 1:33John Dudley, Good to see you, my friend.
- 1:35You too, brother.
- 1:36What's happening?
- 1:37Oh, it is that time of the day where we got Wendy Glacier in the studio.
- 1:42WENDY glacier, Interiors welcome back, Wendy.
- 1:44Hi, guys.
- 1:45How are you?
- 1:45I'm so happy to see you.
- 1:47I love this scarf.
- 1:49I like a little controversy.
- 1:52This one's gonna be fun.
- 1:54Isn't it always controversial on both side?
- 1:57Oh, yeah.
- 1:58I can too.
- 1:59Everybody else going, what are you guys talking about?
- 2:01And today we're going to talk about kind of the difference of a man cave and a she shed and how those can be similar but two different projects.
- 2:11And I think it's hilarious how depending on the client, depending on the house, how these can be such different situations.
- 2:21They can.
- 2:22It's funny.
- 2:22We last year we did a project for a couple of years who had a tech business together and she was general counsel and he was CEO and they could not stand working in the same house, but they wanted
- 2:39to work from home.
- 2:40So we put in two tough sheds and tricked both of them out.
- 2:44And the things that he chose for his and the things that she chose for hers were completely different.
- 2:50It was so funny.
- 2:52They had their individual styles and tastes and it was a lot of fun.
- 2:56You want the daffodils or the moosehorns?
- 2:58Mentally, I think there is something to be said about creating a space that you don't have to compromise on.
- 3:06Right.
- 3:06That this is my space.
- 3:08For John Dudley over there, it's going to be his studio with the instruments and the 2 inch tape player sitting in the corner.
- 3:15And he's got exactly where that needs to go.
- 3:18Where me it's more of the shop and everything else of what I've got going on and the studio and stuff that we're building now.
- 3:24But I think it's healthy to have a space that's your own that you can just kind of go reset to and go enjoy without having to compromise on where everything goes.
- 3:34I think it's a hot topic.
- 3:35I think it's a blessing and a curse.
- 3:37And I think it can cost you a marriage.
- 3:39I'll say that.
- 3:41I like it, Johnny.
- 3:43Right away, I'm just going for the jugular, man.
- 3:46I'm all my fault.
- 3:47I'm.
- 3:47There's no blame there.
- 3:49You know, you fall asleep up in the music studio and you wake up at seven when your wife's leaving for work.
- 3:55It only lasts for so long before she.
- 3:59I'm just saying, come out of the cave occasionally.
- 4:02Yeah, that's kind of my point.
- 4:03Be careful, right?
- 4:04Make it cool, but not too cool.
- 4:07I made that mistake too.
- 4:09John Dudley with the truth.
- 4:11I like it.
- 4:12I got nothing but.
- 4:13I got nothing but the truth, brother.
- 4:15Yeah, I know, but you're not wrong though.
- 4:17I mean, if you.
- 4:18Here's a warning sign, I think, for relationships out there too.
- 4:21If you're creating a place to escape to a lot, maybe you need to work on that a little bit.
- 4:27Because I know plenty of people that get home and they go escape to their place.
- 4:31Probably not the healthiest for the relationship long term.
- 4:35Yeah.
- 4:35And that's a solid point.
- 4:37And to be fair, that was not what my intention.
- 4:39But you know, me and a guitar, it's pretty hard to stare me away.
- 4:42I know, man.
- 4:43I've spent 3am in your studio back in the band days, going, all right, man, I'm going home.
- 4:47Oh, but one more try, right?
- 4:48Yeah.
- 4:50Next thing you know, I'm sleeping on the keyboard.
- 4:51Yeah, yeah, I digress.
- 4:54Sorry.
- 4:55Let's be more professional and designy about it.
- 4:58You just got the contractor's take.
- 5:00That's more than enough.
- 5:01Oh, I think you're right though.
- 5:03It's.
- 5:03It's one of those things that.
- 5:04That can be healthy, especially in today's work from home situation where people need to have their own space because we've all seen the videos of people sitting in the during COVID that we're sitting on the island and the
- 5:18kids go naked running by in their zoom meeting or whatever happens.
- 5:22Or their spouse comes walking in half awake, not knowing that they're now on a.
- 5:27On a zoom call or an interview or something where they're out.
- 5:30There needs to be a balance, like everything.
- 5:33I think so.
- 5:33I think too.
- 5:35What I've seen a lot in different couples over the years is different people's tolerance of a mess and what their definition of a mess is.
- 5:45I worked with a couple in their commercial office and then they asked me to come and help them in their home and she was the CPA and he was the rainmaker and he liked Everything just so.
- 6:00And you would think as a cpa, she would have as well, but I.
- 6:04Already had that backwards.
- 6:06Yeah.
- 6:07And it drove him out of his mind.
- 6:10And she loved.
- 6:12I mean, she was so creative.
- 6:13Like, she loved sewing and she loved scrapbooking, and she loved all the things, but she loved all the things to do all the things.
- 6:23And so they built her this beautiful office with double doors that slid shut so that he wouldn't have to look at it because he just.
- 6:33He could not do it.
- 6:35Yeah.
- 6:35And that's a.
- 6:36That's a marriage saver right there.
- 6:38Yeah.
- 6:38Right.
- 6:39That was useful.
- 6:40This is.
- 6:41See, this so much in homes is, especially if you're at the place in life where you want to be in your forever home, whatever that looks like, and you're making all the changes to your plumbing layouts and your
- 6:54kitchen and all these other things, then at some point, people usually also do something for their specific interests or hobbies to accommodate those things in the long run.
- 7:05And usually it's because they have learned what their spouse can and can't tolerate about their specific interests.
- 7:15But it's almost a protection in a way.
- 7:17But I think it.
- 7:18I mean, it shows a lot of respect and understanding that they want to do that.
- 7:22I think it's kind of neat.
- 7:23But, yeah, if you don't ever recognize those differences, it can be pretty problematic.
- 7:31I think it can be interesting.
- 7:32People like Johnny and I with her who are both ADHD people, we have our way of living, and when your spouse has a little more ocd, that can be problematic.
- 7:44And we see that stuff all the time as clients.
- 7:48And for me, and I know Johnny both, that we both battle that.
- 7:52And so you're laughing a minute ago because we legitimately were talking about this an hour ago, like, sharing.
- 8:00I'm like, dude, I put the water on the boil, she moves the handle an inch.
- 8:06Is that really.
- 8:07Is it better now?
- 8:08Are you okay?
- 8:09Like, yeah, I just laugh at it.
- 8:11Doesn't bother me.
- 8:12Drives her crazy to let a lot.
- 8:14Of those things go, I think.
- 8:16Oh, I don't even think twice.
- 8:18I just go, oh, you're cute.
- 8:20It's a long game is what you've got to play.
- 8:22And I think that comes into play quite a lot with man caves and girl, she sheds and the whole thing.
- 8:30I've learned a lot, especially because I know I've kind of been sharing with you guys about this house.
- 8:35Yeah, let's park and all that.
- 8:38So he has a barn now.
- 8:40Sweet.
- 8:42Yeah.
- 8:42He doesn't go out there enough, though, really.
- 8:45At our former home, I created this incredible man cave for him because I felt bad because the rest of the house was pretty feminine, flowery.
- 8:56And so I thought, oh, poor guy needs a man cave.
- 8:59So we did the sound system and the lighting and a linear electric fireplace clad in marble and all.
- 9:04It was gorgeous.
- 9:06But he never left that room, ever,.
- 9:10Because you designed it too nice.
- 9:13You designed it.
- 9:14I mean, beautiful thought, very kind, very understanding, very compassionate, very going for the long haul.
- 9:20But a man's gotta just make his own man cave.
- 9:24Yeah.
- 9:25And here's the thing.
- 9:26When it's kind of getting too good of a mattress for the guest bedroom, it can't be that comfortable.
- 9:32I think it needs to be soundscapes.
- 9:34Guys, they looked at me and they said, you just put in this outdoor TV and this whole sound system for him, so he come outside with you, but then you're making him this man cave castle thing.
- 9:46He's.
- 9:46He's never coming out here, Wendy.
- 9:48He's never gonna come outside.
- 9:50But it got it into a habit of doing paperwork on the weekend in this beautiful man cave with it all so perfect, and habits are hard to break.
- 9:59And so now here we've.
- 10:03There's not really a man cave.
- 10:05We're going to take a quick break, but stick around because Wendy Glaster is with us and we're just getting warmed up.
- 10:12While we're away, I want you to do two things.
- 10:15First, go to aroundthehouse online.com.
- 10:19That's our home base.
- 10:20Show notes, past episodes, everything we've talked about today, and a whole lot we haven't gotten to yet.
- 10:27Second, open up whatever podcast player you use, Apple, Spotify, wherever you listen, search around the House with Eric G.
- 10:35And hit follow.
- 10:36We've got a back catalog that goes deep.
- 10:38And I promise you, whatever project is staring you in the face right now, there's an episode in there for it.
- 10:44More with Eric G, John Dudley, and Wendy Glaster.
- 10:47When around the House returns.
- 12:13What it's like to play an instrument.
- 12:16And being a friend.
- 12:18What's up?
- 12:19This is Stixitinia and Satchel from Steel Panther, and you are listening to around the House with Eric G.
- 12:27Yeah, we.
- 12:28Love Eric G.
- 12:30And you should, too.
- 12:331987.
- 12:35Welcome back to the around the House show.
- 12:37If this is the first time catching the show, we welcome you to the number one home improvement radio show in the country.
- 12:44Now let's get back to Talking man caves.
- 12:47And she sheds with Wendy Glaster from Wendy Glacier interiors.
- 12:51And habits are hard to break.
- 12:53And so now here We've.
- 12:57There's not really a man cave, and that was intentional, but some of the furniture and some of the things ended up in the living room.
- 13:05And so now that's where he sits on the weekends, and he does his feet for where he can watch his go.
- 13:11And I'm trying to adjust, but maybe soon we can finish the little office in the barn and he can go out there.
- 13:20Because golf all weekend is a lot.
- 13:22It's a lot of noise.
- 13:24Yeah.
- 13:25Golf is not my thing.
- 13:26I'm sorry.
- 13:27Johnny's dying over here.
- 13:29Golf is a lot of noise.
- 13:30It's the one sport nobody makes noise at.
- 13:33What are you talking about?
- 13:35Oh, no, it's the guys who have to whisper on.
- 13:37It's like, ah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:39So you should have built him a Zen garden, apparently.
- 13:42No, he wouldn't do that.
- 13:43He wants to get it on the tractor.
- 13:45Yep.
- 13:46I can't believe he's not hanging out in the barn.
- 13:48I would be all about the barn.
- 13:49Well, he is.
- 13:51I'm excited to come down and hang out in the barn with him and ride the tractor around.
- 13:55There you go.
- 13:56We just have to get the office function out there.
- 13:59Yeah, yeah.
- 14:00It shouldn't be too hard.
- 14:01I mean, you already got the building there.
- 14:02There's probably power out there.
- 14:04So I ran Internet out there.
- 14:06I'm getting closer.
- 14:07Okay, I tell you what.
- 14:09For 50 bucks, I'll come up there and kind of nudge.
- 14:13What do you say?
- 14:14Thank you.
- 14:16Totally fun.
- 14:17But that's one of those things that Wendy.
- 14:18Yeah.
- 14:19You got to create those spaces.
- 14:20And of course, when all of his comfy furniture ended up in the living room, he now has taken over that space.
- 14:27Indeed.
- 14:29Cup holders and all.
- 14:31See a man in his chair.
- 14:33There's no room in the garage.
- 14:34That's the other one that I see, too, sometimes is the people have the garage of stuff, and it's the garage.
- 14:41It's the man cave.
- 14:43I've been shocked.
- 14:44I've seen people put hot tubs in their garage for their man cave.
- 14:47And I'm like, it's not my deal.
- 14:50But I've seen that Barry Simpsons.
- 14:53Yeah, it's just gonna get moldy out there.
- 14:55You gotta be careful putting that much humidity out there.
- 14:57But I've seen that, and I've scratched my head and go, maybe we need to do an outdoor project here.
- 15:03But for them.
- 15:06And it's.
- 15:06Yeah, no, I think we need to fix that now.
- 15:09It sounds like, Wendy, you're kind of on the road to that.
- 15:11What's the next steps on that then?
- 15:13Are you just going to get.
- 15:14Get some more framing and power and stuff out there or.
- 15:16Yeah, I'm really excited because actually a close friend of ours is a contractor and he and Mark get along great.
- 15:24Perfect.
- 15:24So within this giant barn, there's a.
- 15:28This middle section, which is for farm equipment and animals and things, I guess on the smaller shop.
- 15:37And it actually has a water heater, the sink, which is pretty cool.
- 15:42And I have an air conditioner.
- 15:43Okay.
- 15:44And then there's a larger workshop kind of thing.
- 15:47So I think if I take the little shop and empty it and insulate, do all the rough and electrical and all of that.
- 15:57Insulate, drywall, tape, texture, and then have my friends at Soundscapes come back to do the tricked out speakers and all that.
- 16:07Actually, they would do that before refn, let's be honest about the process here.
- 16:10But then he could go out there and he could have the speakers in the big workshop area, and then he could do his paperwork in the little one with the air conditioning and he could listen to any sport
- 16:23he wants as loud as he wants.
- 16:25All weekend long.
- 16:27You had me a water heater.
- 16:29I'm living there.
- 16:30What are you talking water heater?
- 16:31That's the shower, baby.
- 16:32I'm good.
- 16:33There you go.
- 16:34It's a very tiny water heater.
- 16:36I'm a very skinny man, Wendy.
- 16:39I shower like a cat.
- 16:41There you go.
- 16:42What's funny is you take that and what you're doing there.
- 16:45And then we had Cam Anderson on the show a few weeks ago, and from Blacktail Studios, he's in the middle of the ultimate barn build for his shop.
- 16:54Oh, really?
- 16:54When it's done, it's gonna be a figure shop.
- 17:01I think he's probably in the $950,000 range on this shop build.
- 17:07And it's going to be a million bucks by the time he's done.
- 17:10So what's putting in there?
- 17:12I'll bet he goes another 2, 300 grand past that pretty quickly.
- 17:15You and I both know that just.
- 17:17From the chat the other day, I'm like, oh, that's headed for the sky.
- 17:21So he did a huge concrete slab with in floor hydronic heating in it.
- 17:28And he brought it up to me, goes, why didn't you do the cooling?
- 17:31Why didn't you, Eric?
- 17:32You didn't tell me you could put a heat pump on that and cool it.
- 17:34And I'm like, because I don't want a cold floor.
- 17:37Your feet get cold.
- 17:38I'd rather have the hot floor.
- 17:40And if you need an air conditioner, just air Conditioning.
- 17:42I'd rather condition the air than the floor.
- 17:44But yeah, I mean, you could do that.
- 17:46But it's like at what point is, are you past the ridiculous side?
- 17:51And I mean, he's building.
- 17:53That's, that's an expense for his business and it, he'll do fine with it.
- 17:57But it's an awesome shop.
- 17:59But holy smokes, most people are not going to spend a million dollars on their work and man cave.
- 18:07But look at, I mean, the stuff he's building and he's talking about, oh, we're just gonna flip over this 2 ton slab of a table.
- 18:14Yeah.
- 18:15I mean he needs giant equipment in there.
- 18:18He's.
- 18:18Yeah, it's super.
- 18:19Super.
- 18:20It's off the charts.
- 18:21Cool.
- 18:22Yeah.
- 18:23If there aren't a lot of people that could spend a million dollars on a shop.
- 18:28That's true.
- 18:29But if you're in that income category and you have interests or a real reason within your work to do something like that, I can see where that would be really useful.
- 18:44Because if things are set up properly so that you can do your work efficiently and so that everything is working and in good order, then you can really get some great stuff done.
- 18:59And there's.
- 18:59You're not constantly running into barriers to your progress or your success or breakthrough or some interesting things that you're trying to get done.
- 19:08I mentioned this to farmer clients and they always need a shop.
- 19:13And that shop is really important.
- 19:15Sometimes people buy the land just for the shop and then later they think about the house is kind of how it works where I'm from.
- 19:23And it's really interesting because it's also sort of a declaration of your priorities as a homeowner and as a, as a business person.
- 19:33So I joke that a lot of times I'll see families where the John Deere tractor comes through a new one every year.
- 19:41And then finally the wife says, enough, you're not getting another tractor till I get my kitchen.
- 19:47It's kind of like that.
- 19:48I mean, it's she shed and man cave, but in a, it materializes in a different way.
- 19:54She needs a beautiful kitchen to get the things done that she feels are a priority.
- 20:01He needs a really well equipped shop to get his work done.
- 20:05And so it just, it's nice when couples can share the responsibility of all these different things that they as a couple have decided are important.
- 20:16And then they invest in those interests and their priorities equally so that each feels valued in the relationship.
- 20:25And I think that's probably something that you don't say out loud a lot at Least I don't have that conversation out loud with clients a lot.
- 20:33But I try to be really mindful of it because it is a big part of the motivation of why people do what they do.
- 20:41And it's fun to work for clients like that person and are willing to invest in what they love.
- 20:49Make sure you follow us on social media.
- 20:51Just look for the around the House show or head to our website aroundthehouse online dot com.
- 20:58We will be right back.
- 23:06Foreign.
- 23:12Welcome back to the around the House show.
- 23:15To find out more or contact the show, head to our new updated website at aroundthe house online.com now let's get back to talking Man Caves and she sheds with Wendy Glaster from Wendy Glacier Interiors.
- 23:29And I think that's probably something that you don't see say out loud a lot.
- 23:33At least I don't have that conversation out loud with clients a lot.
- 23:37But I try to be really mindful of it because it is a big part of the motivation of why people do what they do.
- 23:45And it's fun to work for clients like that that value their person and are willing to invest in what they love and what they find interesting, not just themselves.
- 23:56And they're usually very successful couples.
- 24:00Very true.
- 24:00It's funny with Cam, rarely do I tell somebody, hey man, maybe going back to your helicopter career would be a cheaper solution.
- 24:08Buy a helicopter instead of build a shop.
- 24:10But that's kind of a rare situation.
- 24:12But he'll make money with that.
- 24:14He's got a really profitable business.
- 24:16He builds amazing stuff.
- 24:18It's a great write off.
- 24:19He needs that for as well as he does so and it's going to make his job easier.
- 24:24So on paper it makes a lot of sense.
- 24:27And he bought that 20 acres so he could put a shop on it and it was the right space and it's going to be ridiculous.
- 24:35Can't wait to go over there and see it when it's done.
- 24:37But yeah, they've been just cranking along on that thing and that's neat when he gets it all in there.
- 24:42I mean it's got its own, it's got its own huge power supply.
- 24:46I think he's all got three phase power going to it and it's going to be a commercial building pretty much when it's all said and done.
- 24:51But there's a lot of work that goes into that.
- 24:53And I think that's one of the things too because he could have put a very inexpensive barn on there.
- 24:58But because he was building it the way he was doing there was a ton of soil work.
- 25:02All of a sudden you're putting something pretty heavy on there.
- 25:05When you put in a 8 inch slab of concrete.
- 25:08And there's a lot of work that has to be done.
- 25:10And then I bet it took him six months to get through the permit process on that, if not longer.
- 25:15So that stuff adds up and the things sneak up where on these projects, sometimes just getting power there can be expensive.
- 25:23I think he had 12 or 15 grand just to get power across the road.
- 25:28And even though power was right there, they just didn't have enough in the transformer to do it.
- 25:32So they had to bring it from another line on the other side to do that.
- 25:36So I think too, just as a cautionary tale, you don't have to be doing a project that large.
- 25:41But for the couple that we gave a he shed and a she shed for their work, the contractor, within the scope of work, it was written out and was very clear it needed to bring data, high speed data
- 25:55to both sheds.
- 25:58Underground cable.
- 26:00It was all called out nice.
- 26:02And they didn't.
- 26:05To his office.
- 26:05Yeah.
- 26:06But she got dialed up.
- 26:08Yeah.
- 26:09And it.
- 26:10And then they tried to argue with me and explain to me that it couldn't be done and that of course we called in someone else and build them back.
- 26:22But it's really important that I think if you do have specific needs for these specialty rooms or spaces that you're trying to accomplish, you really want to interview the people that are doing the work to know that they
- 26:38comprehend what you're asking for.
- 26:41Because there are people in my area that understand all that and they're very high end and devoted to the craft.
- 26:50And then there are people who swing a hammer and they, they do well enough, but they aren't really equipped for something like that.
- 26:57And so I think that's important to do your research and make sure that you have people in there that really understand.
- 27:04And it may come with a higher price tag, but in the long run, amortized over time is something I like to say.
- 27:12You will be fin.
- 27:13Here's what's funny about that too.
- 27:15Wendy.
- 27:16I saw a huge smart home advertised new construction project in Florida, major national builder.
- 27:26And they were building this whole green community all powered by solar and high speed Internet and smart home this smart home that somebody I knew at the time moved in.
- 27:38All the smart home things were sitting on the shelf in the closet.
- 27:41None of them were installed.
- 27:43And the houses on the streets were done but they forgot to put in the fiber underground.
- 27:51So the whole subdivision had no Internet.
- 27:56And for three months while they're going through the permit process to get that dug out and line board through everywhere.
- 28:05They literally had fiber optic lines that duct tape to the sidewalk going up to the homes just so they could have the Internet because the locks they supplied were smart locks.
- 28:16It needed the Internet.
- 28:18And so does that happen on the biggest scale?
- 28:21How do they.
- 28:21How do you miss that?
- 28:23I mean, look, we all make mistakes, but you're talking about an entire housing project based on the one thing you forgot, and it's all underground and the houses are done.
- 28:33How does that happen?
- 28:36Seriously?
- 28:37Yeah.
- 28:37Someone may have gotten fired over that.
- 28:39I'm gonna guess we did.
- 28:42Man, that'd be promoted.
- 28:44We're promoted.
- 28:45They could have got promoted out to another position because they didn't want to work with them in that position anymore.
- 28:51Oh, man.
- 28:53I'll tell you one thing both of you touched on, I think is super important because.
- 28:59Yeah, right.
- 28:59You're creating a space that expresses who you are in a way.
- 29:04Right.
- 29:04Obviously.
- 29:05Whether it's new swarms or motorcycles.
- 29:07And it also is a space of comfort and peace and relaxation or rest or interest or all those things.
- 29:15It becomes such a piece of human psychology, just like you're talking about with the different couples, Wendy.
- 29:21And there's definitely the people Eric brought up that are like, I'm going to watch TV over and hide.
- 29:27It's kind of the contrast.
- 29:28And it's funny for me, Wendy.
- 29:30I bought.
- 29:30Eric paddled through it with me, but I bought a house that was built in 1890 in Tacoma.
- 29:37And it literally.
- 29:38The city was knocking it down in two months.
- 29:41And I put an offer in on it for $49,000 HUD offer only because there's boards up, trees.
- 29:50Trees growing through the windows on post and beam and falling down.
- 29:55Literally, like, horrifying.
- 29:58And I'm like, oh, Michelle will never go for this.
- 30:01I'm like, ah, check this out.
- 30:038:00 clock at night.
- 30:04She's, oh, my God, I love it.
- 30:06We have to have it.
- 30:07I'm like, you gotta be kidding me.
- 30:10Buy the thing if you kicked me to buy it.
- 30:12And I was like, all right, let's go.
- 30:16Two and a half years later, right?
- 30:18The point being is that the biggest prize for me was doing exactly what you're talking about.
- 30:23Everything.
- 30:24What do you want?
- 30:25Viking or, you know, granite or hexagon tiles here and crayon hinges and crayolenges.
- 30:32It just.
- 30:33Whatever.
- 30:33I was like, go, man, it's all yours.
- 30:35And I literally would.
- 30:37I ran my construction company all day, worked till Four in the morning on that place.
- 30:42But the.
- 30:43The reward was Carriage House Studios.
- 30:47But that came first.
- 30:49Then I got our little playroom.
- 30:52Yeah.
- 30:52And that's important.
- 30:52It's super important.
- 30:53It creates.
- 30:55Yeah.
- 30:56Just a healthy, happy environment.
- 30:58And that's.
- 30:58Here's one thing, Wendy.
- 31:00I don't know if you're seeing this.
- 31:01I'm seeing this out there because I'm hearing more and more about it where it's almost like we're going back to the 40s and 50s again, where the couples are staying in separate bedrooms.
- 31:10I've seen more and more of that.
- 31:12Like the Lucy.
- 31:14I Love Lucy show where they stayed in separate bed bedrooms because one person snored or somebody had a work schedule that they were coming in the middle of the night because of work.
- 31:24And I'm seeing more and more of that.
- 31:26And I'm scratching my head going, okay, I guess if you've got your man cave and she shed there, maybe that's going to be their own spaces.
- 31:33But to me, it's a little bit of a head scratcher.
- 31:35It's a little lonely.
- 31:37Maybe Covid.
- 31:38Blame it on Covid started all that, maybe.
- 31:41Which I also wanted to say.
- 31:43I kind of thank Covid because everybody just had to lighten up a little bit, right?
- 31:47Yeah.
- 31:47Naked baby running by and he's just got you like, ah, don't worry about it, man.
- 31:52Show up in your bathrobe.
- 31:53It's cool.
- 31:54We all get it.
- 31:55We're all doing it.
- 31:55It's like camping with, you know, working focus.
- 31:58I don't know.
- 31:59Oh, yeah, no, it's.
- 32:00You're not wrong.
- 32:01And my buddy Tony made it, who's actually my.
- 32:03My insurance agent now, but he was working for a local country station here in Portland, and he made it on all the national.
- 32:10I mean, cnn.
- 32:12He was on all the.
- 32:13The good extra TV shows and everything else because they were doing a meeting and it was kind of like a zoom thing with the fans and with the.
- 32:23With the people from the radio show because they were doing it from their houses and he was wearing the tighty whitey sitting there doing the show.
- 32:31And then they went to break and he thought they went to break, but they were still live.
- 32:37And he goes walking off and the camera tracked him and he's in his underwear and it just blew up on the Internet.
- 32:45And there's a few of those.
- 32:46No, I know these people.
- 32:48I've worked with them.
- 32:49That's hilarious.
- 32:50That's not made up.
- 32:52But no, you have to be very.
- 32:54Famous in his covet underwear.
- 32:55Yeah.
- 32:55There was more than a few of those slips, right?
- 32:58Talking to Eric in my underwear.
- 33:00No.
- 33:00Yeah.
- 33:00No, I'm just saying.
- 33:04And you have to get up and go running or what if.
- 33:06I don't know, what if the camera falls?
- 33:09Oh, Wendy, what's gonna happen to your dog?
- 33:11Come on.
- 33:12No, I'm eight.
- 33:13What if.
- 33:13So I can never be in my underwear now because my.
- 33:16Something might happen with my dog.
- 33:20But if you're in front of a camera and you jump up to go help your puppy, then that's.
- 33:24That's not a good situation.
- 33:26You gotta be prepared.
- 33:27I.
- 33:27I do want to ask.
- 33:29I do want to ask one more question.
- 33:31Yes.
- 33:32What does your husband want before you get to texture and drywall and everything you were talking about?
- 33:38He really wants.
- 33:40Do what?
- 33:41He has brought it up.
- 33:43Okay.
- 33:44So I think that's something that he would really like to do.
- 33:47I'm just saying maybe lesson learned, because you designed and did the whole thing on the other one.
- 33:53You know, maybe listen to the client.
- 33:54Is that what you're saying?
- 33:55You can nudge.
- 33:57You can nudge, right?
- 33:58Say, hey, look, I bought you this cool tractor sign on ebay.
- 34:02Right.
- 34:02You should make that place cool.
- 34:04But yeah, when you're like, I decided we're painting gray, it's great.
- 34:08Have fun out there.
- 34:10No, I definitely would love for him to be more involved this time.
- 34:13And I think it's not completely his man cave in the living room now, because I've done these.
- 34:19He's a huge football fan.
- 34:22Cool.
- 34:22So he has these autographed jerseys they've had framed for him.
- 34:26And where are we gonna put the jerseys?
- 34:28I'm like, oh, I guess in the man cave that you get to build.
- 34:33To ask.
- 34:33That was subtle.
- 34:34What's his team?
- 34:36He plays fantasy football.
- 34:38Okay.
- 34:38Which is which?
- 34:39I'm sorry.
- 34:40I always make fun of fantasy football.
- 34:41It's Dungeons and Dragons for football fans.
- 34:44Oh, Lord, now we're gonna get purists about football.
- 34:46Come on.
- 34:47He does.
- 34:47Oh, he has a Montana.
- 34:50Okay.
- 34:50Joe Montana Jersey.
- 34:52He's a 49ers fan, maybe.
- 34:54Yeah, he loves.
- 34:55He likes the 49ers, but he grew up going to the Raiders with his grandpa when he was little.
- 35:00That makes sense.
- 35:01So he has stuff from there.
- 35:02He's gotta go.
- 35:03Raiders or Rams.
- 35:04But the Rams went somewhere.
- 35:05Right.
- 35:05I just remember.
- 35:06So, yeah, Raiders in Las Vegas.
- 35:09Rams are la.
- 35:11And they came back to la.
- 35:14Yep.
- 35:15The Rams went away for a while, but they were meant.
- 35:17Johnny, I think this time I would really like to get Mark's input But I.
- 35:21He's written so much.
- 35:23No buts.
- 35:24You just negated.
- 35:25Oh, yeah.
- 35:25You just negated absolutely every bit of credit you were trying to give him.
- 35:29And you went, but he kind of doesn't know what he's doing.
- 35:32And I'm the designer.
- 35:34A lot of checks recently getting into this house, and I don't think this is a time when he would freely like to write any more.
- 35:45So for the moment.
- 35:46So you'll write them and he'll feel better?
- 35:48Yes.
- 35:50The planning phase.
- 35:52So that when we get to execute on it, it's exactly what he wants.
- 35:56There we go.
- 35:57We'll let him plan then.
- 35:58I like it.
- 35:59You've already got the whole thing down.
- 36:01To the door handles going, oh, yeah, he'll be ready.
- 36:05Yeah.
- 36:06One of the things, though, you brought up something interesting with smart home stuff.
- 36:10When you're bringing cable out for the shed, the barn, any of that stuff, you never want to buy what's okay for today, because if you're buying it today, then five years from now, it's not going to work as
- 36:24well.
- 36:24So when you're at it, it's like, all right, I want to run the Cat 9 cable, not the Cat 5 cable out there, or whatever.
- 36:31It's.
- 36:32You want to get as good as you can and plan for the future with that.
- 36:37Because it seems no matter what we do, all we're doing is doing more data these days than we ever have.
- 36:43Could you imagine trying to do dial up with AOL now?
- 36:47It would.
- 36:48We wouldn't even get the computer to log in.
- 36:50Agreed.
- 36:51The big thing for him is someday he wants to restore his grandfather's farmall 1944 tractor.
- 36:59There you go.
- 36:59There we go.
- 37:00Do that.
- 37:01He's gonna need to watch a lot of YouTube, so my gift to him was running the Internet out to the barn so he can watch all the YouTube he needs to to work on that.
- 37:13Very cute, somewhat decrepit, but someday we'll be beautiful tractor Classics.
- 37:20That's.
- 37:20Oh, yeah.
- 37:21It's like an old 40s Ford or something.
- 37:23That's really cool.
- 37:24Have you watched Classic Tractor Fever?
- 37:28No, but I know what it is.
- 37:29I used to own.
- 37:30I used to own old tractors, so I can work.
- 37:34I could probably help him on that farm.
- 37:35All see, There you go.
- 37:37That's some of our Ferguson.
- 37:40So.
- 37:40Yeah, not the band Johnny, but the tractor.
- 37:43I know.
- 37:44Don't forget, though, I have seen Massey Ferguson play at the tractor.
- 37:48There you go.
- 37:49It's actually funny.
- 37:50What if those guys are still around?
- 37:52I think they are.
- 37:53So.
- 37:53Yeah.
- 37:54Going back to the band days of us playing.
- 37:56And there's a place in Seattle called the Tractor Tavern, which is a cool place.
- 38:00And it was funny to me when I was watching them and they were playing.
- 38:04It was a tractor name playing at a place called the Tractor.
- 38:06I thought it was kind of funny.
- 38:07We've talked a lot about how I'm going to accommodate Mark and his interests and be a nice wife and not.
- 38:14I'm holding you to that.
- 38:16For the women in your life and their special spots.
- 38:19Two and a half years.
- 38:21Two and a half years restoring an 1890s house.
- 38:24Come on.
- 38:25Yeah, yeah.
- 38:26Johnny did that.
- 38:26My girlfriend that I live with now, we.
- 38:29I sold my house and moved in with her.
- 38:32So she has 95% of the house.
- 38:35So until we sell this to get our own, she's got most of it already.
- 38:40I've got my shop now where I'm building the studio out, which is kind of my space out there until we decide to get it into a bigger house.
- 38:47But I've got my big shop and I'm over there every week building on that, getting that thing ready to rock.
- 38:51And.
- 38:51And that's going to be the.
- 38:53The man cave, shall we say?
- 38:54It's only 15 minutes away from the house, so it's not too far.
- 38:57Oh, that's good.
- 38:58So.
- 38:59And that.
- 38:59That'll work, but.
- 39:01Very nice.
- 39:02Mine's a balcony.
- 39:03Yeah, Johnny's got his balcony.
- 39:05I just hang on the balcony.
- 39:07Actually, my last.
- 39:09A few houses ago here we had three floors and that was cool.
- 39:14It was cool.
- 39:15And I took the two upstairs.
- 39:17Bed, five bed.
- 39:18That's just how Columbia works.
- 39:21Five bedrooms and six baths or.
- 39:23Yeah.
- 39:24And it's always more baths and bedrooms.
- 39:25It's wacky.
- 39:26Anyway, the entire house was kind of vacant, but my upstairs two rooms were the live room and the recording room.
- 39:34And a balcony.
- 39:34And a balcony.
- 39:35Yeah.
- 39:36That was the man cave.
- 39:37It was very cool.
- 39:38But.
- 39:39So that meant the rest is yours.
- 39:43The other two floors, whatever you need, just let me know.
- 39:45I'll be up there.
- 39:46Very nice.
- 39:47Yeah.
- 39:48I've got my chaos of the office, which is one bedroom out of the, what, three.
- 39:53So there's nobody else in the house.
- 39:55And the dog, so it's pretty simple.
- 39:56But yeah, it'll be.
- 39:57It's going to be way more interesting when we get our own house to really kind of combine that stuff.
- 40:02That's where that compromise and negotiation is going to happen.
- 40:06Those are the two words I was thinking about.
- 40:08Yeah.
- 40:09And you gotta.
- 40:10You gotta get the right space.
- 40:12You gotta at Least think it's gonna be your forever home for 10 years before you're committing to really creating that space is part of the issue.
- 40:20So if you're like, man, yeah, probably not here.
- 40:24Sometimes it takes a while to get to that point.
- 40:27Yeah.
- 40:27And the other problem is too is she's gonna retire in a few years.
- 40:30We're getting to that point where she's got under five years left of her career before she retires.
- 40:36And being that we're living in one of the highest tax states in the U.S.
- 40:41i think we're depending on what list we're either number 40 or number 50 for the worst place to retire in.
- 40:48I'm not sure if we're gonna stick around.
- 40:50Oh, it's sad.
- 40:51When I go, I think we might move to California where it's cheaper to live.
- 40:55But that's sad.
- 40:57Yeah, California is a great place to live, sir.
- 40:59Oh, it is.
- 41:00Don't get me wrong, it's not cheap either.
- 41:02So.
- 41:04The only state I still like in the US I will say that out loud.
- 41:09I am native born.
- 41:10San Jose, California, Cupertino.
- 41:13I did a ton of growing up there throughout my life.
- 41:16I told you, I lived in Sierra Nevadas and Twain Heart and Soulsbyville and all those little tweaky places.
- 41:22Santa Clara is where the, the stadium is down there for the football team.
- 41:25So, yeah, maybe now.
- 41:26I don't know.
- 41:27I haven't seen Santa Clara.
- 41:28I haven't seen Santa Clara since Apple took over my grandpa's arco station in 78 or something.
- 41:3476.
- 41:35I don't know.
- 41:36Oh, wow.
- 41:37No, no.
- 41:38Honestly though, no, California is the best.
- 41:40If I ever had to move back to the US it's the only state I would live in.
- 41:45It's crazy.
- 41:45It's broke, it's got all its faults, but so does everywhere else.
- 41:49And it's just absolutely beautiful.
- 41:52And I love it.
- 41:53I love the beach.
- 41:54There are a lot of fun things to do here.
- 41:56Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 41:58We're spoiled that way in Oregon too.
- 42:00Where I'm at, I can literally be at the beach with the camper in 90 minutes.
- 42:03And then I could be up in the mountains at the ski resort in that same 90 minutes.
- 42:07So it works out pretty well.
- 42:10All right, Wendy, we're running out of time here, so I want to make sure that we cover this.
- 42:14If someone wants to find you to design their next she shed man space or kitchen or whatever they're doing across the country, how do they track you down?
- 42:25Oh, thank you.
- 42:26You can find me www.wendyglasterinteriors.com and it's G L A I S T E R.
- 42:33You can find me on Instagram under the same tagline.
- 42:37So I'd love to have you follow along on all of our design adventures.
- 42:41Thanks so much for bringing that up.
- 42:43No problem, Wendy.
- 42:44Thanks for coming on the show.
- 42:45And John Dudley, always great to see you, my friend.
- 42:48You as well.
- 42:49Even when it's only been an hour since I last saw you.
- 42:54Did I say that out loud?
- 42:56Did you say that out loud around the house?
- 43:02Take care.
- 43:05You don't want to be a Debbie downer Just turn a frown upside downer don't be a stick in.
- 43:12The mud grab your buddy grab your butt Take this good time and turn.
- 43:16It up louder no one ever talks about the nights they went to bed counting them she kitchen cheese getting pretty r act in your age don't make a good story knock one back no buzz no glory no one
- 43:31ever talks about the shots that.
