- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on, everybody? Welcome into another edition of
- 0:12Speaker 1: the Checko Daily.
- 0:13Speaker 2: It's Andrew decheco here, Eagles beat reporter for Inside the
- 0:16Speaker 2: Birds dot com and with Shawn Mannion in the fold
- 0:20Speaker 2: now as offensive coordinator, it's fair to expect some tweaks
- 0:25Speaker 2: here and there with the offensive coaching staff, and today
- 0:28Speaker 2: I kind of wanted to spend a little bit of
- 0:30Speaker 2: time going over some of the names of the coaches
- 0:32Speaker 2: who are currently on the offensive staff, what their roles are,
- 0:36Speaker 2: what their background is, and my vantage point as to
- 0:40Speaker 2: how they've helped or maybe impeded the ability for progress
- 0:46Speaker 2: for certain units on the offensive side of the ball.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Based off of what I've seen on social media, there
- 0:53Speaker 2: seems to be a lot of iron vitual directed at
- 0:56Speaker 2: some position coaches that for me, I have to wonder
- 1:01Speaker 2: if those who are critiquing are aware of their background,
- 1:05Speaker 2: what they've done, or even who they are or their
- 1:09Speaker 2: imprint on the organization, Because for me, coaches in general,
- 1:15Speaker 2: especially assistant coaches, are mostly faceless.
- 1:18Speaker 1: To those on the outside.
- 1:20Speaker 2: But if you cover the team, you get to talk
- 1:22Speaker 2: to these coaches and you get a better sense for
- 1:25Speaker 2: their vision, their coaching points and the value that they
- 1:29Speaker 2: bring to the building, and so I kind of wanted
- 1:31Speaker 2: to spend a little bit of time going over some
- 1:34Speaker 2: of those names. So you have at assistant head coach
- 1:37Speaker 2: and running backs coach since twenty twenty one, you have
- 1:40Speaker 2: Jamal Singleton, and Jamal Singleton, in my estimation, is a
- 1:44Speaker 2: very strong position coach.
- 1:46Speaker 1: You watch him during the weeks at practice.
- 1:48Speaker 2: He's very involved with bas security drills. He's helped players,
- 1:54Speaker 2: whether it was Saquon Barkley elevate to a greater level
- 1:57Speaker 2: when he got to Philadelphia, or or Tank Bigsby when
- 2:01Speaker 2: he started to get rolling offensively. I think there's been
- 2:04Speaker 2: some moments along the way, whether it was Miles Sanders
- 2:07Speaker 2: or DeAndre Swift, those players I believe were able to
- 2:13Speaker 2: reach a certain level with his tutelage. Jamal Singleton is
- 2:16Speaker 2: very detail oriented and that's something you're gonna hear me
- 2:19Speaker 2: say quite a bit here. They focus on ball security,
- 2:22Speaker 2: They hold players accountable, and I believe that his ability
- 2:26Speaker 2: to kind of be that leader in Sakwon Barkley and
- 2:29Speaker 2: Tank Bigsby. I remember asking about it has really I
- 2:33Speaker 2: think it was Tank Bigsby who I actually asked gave
- 2:36Speaker 2: a really good answer as to what Jamal Singleton provides.
- 2:41Speaker 2: And he commands a room and he gets the most
- 2:44Speaker 2: out of the players there, and so I look at
- 2:46Speaker 2: his role and I think that there's enough of a
- 2:49Speaker 2: track record there of success under Nick Sirianni. He was
- 2:52Speaker 2: brought on as part of Nick Sirianni's staff. He's someone
- 2:56Speaker 2: that I believe that you would want to have in
- 2:59Speaker 2: that building because of what he provides from a leadership standpoint,
- 3:02Speaker 2: from an accountability standpoint, from a detail and fundamental standpoint,
- 3:06Speaker 2: and you look.
- 3:07Speaker 1: At the players that he's developed over the years, and
- 3:09Speaker 1: I think that that kind of speaks for itself.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Wide receivers coach Aaron Moorehead is a coach that I've
- 3:16Speaker 2: seen a lot of people question and he's been a
- 3:20Speaker 2: part of the organization since twenty twenty. He entered the
- 3:25Speaker 2: building as part of Doug Peterson's staff and his final
- 3:29Speaker 2: season there, and he's held that role and through the
- 3:34Speaker 2: Nick Sirianni era, and he's someone that is one of
- 3:37Speaker 2: my favorite Aaron Moorehead. Sort of fun facts is that
- 3:41Speaker 2: when he played football at Illinois, he was part of
- 3:43Speaker 2: a receiving corps that included Brandon Lloyd, who enjoyed a large,
- 3:47Speaker 2: a long NFL career, and Greg Lewis, who, of course
- 3:51Speaker 2: as a former Eagles wide receiver who's a position coach
- 3:53Speaker 2: in the NFL.
- 3:54Speaker 1: That was the trio there for the fighting a lione I.
- 3:58Speaker 2: But he also played football for Colts two thousand and
- 4:01Speaker 2: three to two thousand and seven, And I think you
- 4:05Speaker 2: command a certain amount of respect when you've played the
- 4:07Speaker 2: position before at the highest level.
- 4:10Speaker 1: And a lot of the different receivers speak.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Glowingly about Aaron Moorehead and what he brings to the
- 4:16Speaker 2: table from a preparation standpoint, from a detailed perspective. And
- 4:22Speaker 2: I think it was Johan Dotson who mentioned to me
- 4:25Speaker 2: about how much he learned from from Aaron Morehead, having
- 4:28Speaker 2: come over from Washington, thinking that he this is his words,
- 4:32Speaker 2: not mine, that he kind of knew everything coming into it,
- 4:36Speaker 2: and he said he learned a lot from aj Brown,
- 4:38Speaker 2: DeVante Smith, but he also singled out Aaron Moorehead learning
- 4:41Speaker 2: how to practice, how to be detailed and prepare a
- 4:45Speaker 2: certain way, and he brings that to the table. Now
- 4:48Speaker 2: you can look at Aaron Moorehead and question who progressed
- 4:52Speaker 2: under him, And I think that's fair but I think
- 4:55Speaker 2: if you're looking at it through the lens of twenty
- 4:57Speaker 2: twenty five, Darius Cooper progressed from an drafted widebers here
- 5:01Speaker 2: from Tarlton State to a player who started to eat.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Into Johan Dotson's snaps.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I think you can look at players of the past,
- 5:09Speaker 2: whether it was I don't know, Alamine's a kiss or
- 5:13Speaker 2: a Zach Pascal for stepping in and making plays when needed.
- 5:18Speaker 2: There's been a lot of false start penalties last season
- 5:21Speaker 2: that falls on the coaching staff and as much as
- 5:23Speaker 2: it falls on player execution. And when you look at
- 5:27Speaker 2: the past game coordinator Josh Bizzard coming in, I'm expecting
- 5:31Speaker 2: a revamp passing attack. You have Sean Mannion who has
- 5:34Speaker 2: his own vision as well. That might be a coach
- 5:37Speaker 2: that if you're looking at a tweak here or there,
- 5:39Speaker 2: that might make some sense. But I think Aaron moorehead
- 5:44Speaker 2: has more or less done a solid job at his
- 5:48Speaker 2: in his role. But you have really no way of
- 5:51Speaker 2: knowing unless you talk to the coach, which we get
- 5:53Speaker 2: to enduring training camp where you talk to players and
- 5:56Speaker 2: how that coach has impacted them and helped take their
- 5:59Speaker 2: game to another level. The players really really like Aaron moorehead.
- 6:04Speaker 2: They hold him in high regard. But whether or not
- 6:07Speaker 2: the vision of Sean Manning and Josh Grizzard as it
- 6:09Speaker 2: pertains to the passing game impacts what they what they
- 6:15Speaker 2: are looking for in a wide receiver coach, that's something
- 6:18Speaker 2: that I.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Think would be worth monitoring.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Again, no one knows where the turnover is gonna come from,
- 6:25Speaker 2: or where there's going to be a tweak here or there.
- 6:28Speaker 2: But I think if you're looking at it and zooming
- 6:30Speaker 2: out knowing how they maybe envision this passing game or
- 6:34Speaker 2: what they are maybe looking for from a wide receiver coach,
- 6:37Speaker 2: that might be.
- 6:37Speaker 1: One that would make some sense.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Then you have tight ends coach Jason Michael, who was
- 6:41Speaker 2: brought on in twenty twenty one under Nick Sirianni part
- 6:44Speaker 2: of his initial coaching staff.
- 6:46Speaker 1: He stood the test of time. You like his background.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Many maybe don't know this, but he was an offensive
- 6:53Speaker 2: coordinator for the Tennessee Titans in twenty fourteen.
- 6:56Speaker 1: In twenty fifteen, so.
- 6:57Speaker 2: He brings play calling experience. He didn't tap into that
- 7:01Speaker 2: last season, at least not that we know of, but
- 7:06Speaker 2: I think he is another coach where I look at
- 7:09Speaker 2: player development EJ. Jenkins is an example, Grant cal Kata
- 7:14Speaker 2: as a sixth round pick elevating to the number two
- 7:16Speaker 2: tight end role, and Dallas Goddard having the best season
- 7:20Speaker 2: of his career. But there's other players along the way
- 7:24Speaker 2: that you can certainly make a case for, again, another
- 7:27Speaker 2: coach who is very detail oriented and knows how to
- 7:30Speaker 2: get his message across to his players. Whether I'm talking
- 7:34Speaker 2: to Grant kl Kata about Jason Michael, whether I'm talking
- 7:37Speaker 2: to EJ. Jenkins who's helped EJ with his blocking and
- 7:41Speaker 2: how to really refine that area of his game, I
- 7:45Speaker 2: think it is something of note. Plus I think there's
- 7:47Speaker 2: value there with having that play call experience. He's coached
- 7:51Speaker 2: tight ends at a number of different stops.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Along the way.
- 7:54Speaker 2: He's a veteran coach, and I have to believe that
- 7:56Speaker 2: he can be a coach that can continue to develop
- 8:02Speaker 2: the players at that position under Sean Mannion. But I
- 8:05Speaker 2: think Jason Michael is another coach that doesn't get the
- 8:08Speaker 2: proper recognition.
- 8:09Speaker 1: And I've gotten a chance to sit down.
- 8:12Speaker 2: With him at the Super Bowl, the first Super Bowl
- 8:14Speaker 2: in twenty twenty two, where I specifically asked him about
- 8:18Speaker 2: his development of Jack Stowell at the time, who was
- 8:21Speaker 2: the number two tight end, and Grant k Kata the
- 8:23Speaker 2: number three tight end. Both players offer different types of
- 8:26Speaker 2: skill set, but he spoke at length as to what
- 8:31Speaker 2: his role is and getting them to realize their potential
- 8:35Speaker 2: and putting them in situations where they're going to thrive.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Now you can look at this season and say, well,
- 8:41Speaker 2: the Eagles put Grant kal Katerra and at disadvantage because
- 8:43Speaker 2: they're asking him to do something that does not accentuate
- 8:47Speaker 2: his skill set.
- 8:47Speaker 1: He's a receiving centric tight end.
- 8:49Speaker 2: They asked him to be an inline blocker, which I
- 8:52Speaker 2: know a lot of the ire and vitrol was directed
- 8:54Speaker 2: at Grant, but that's not Grant's fault.
- 8:56Speaker 1: He's a willing blocker, but he was put.
- 8:58Speaker 2: In a difficult position to do something that he's not
- 9:01Speaker 2: equipped to do. He's a receiving tight end. But I
- 9:05Speaker 2: think that falls on a little bit. You'd have to
- 9:08Speaker 2: look a little higher in the pecking order about who's
- 9:10Speaker 2: determining that, and Jason Michael can only do so much
- 9:14Speaker 2: to get Grant to realize his potential as a blocker.
- 9:16Speaker 1: That's not on Jason Michael either. You have it or
- 9:19Speaker 1: you don't.
- 9:19Speaker 2: And every time I've talked to Grant Calcata, whenever I
- 9:22Speaker 2: ask him where he's feel, usually in the summers, where
- 9:25Speaker 2: I'm asking him where he feel he made an advancement
- 9:28Speaker 2: in his game, he usually mentions blocking. And that's all
- 9:31Speaker 2: relative because you're going to note it. You're not necessarily
- 9:34Speaker 2: going to notice marginal improvement from a blocking tight end
- 9:38Speaker 2: or from a player who's not necessarily known as a blocker.
- 9:42Speaker 2: So yeah, based off of the information that you gather
- 9:45Speaker 2: behind the scenes talking to players, listening to Jason Michael talk,
- 9:49Speaker 2: I think that he's a coach that.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Should remain in the fold. Again, all this is going
- 9:54Speaker 1: to be.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Determined based off of what Seawan Manning and and his
- 10:00Speaker 2: thought process as to what he's looking for in those
- 10:03Speaker 2: specific specific coaches. But I also think it's worth mentioning
- 10:06Speaker 2: that Sean Manning, and at thirty three years old, probably
- 10:08Speaker 2: doesn't have a large rolldex.
- 10:09Speaker 1: To draw from.
- 10:11Speaker 2: You know, when you appoint an experienced play call that
- 10:15Speaker 2: have maybe been at different stops, you have more coaches
- 10:19Speaker 2: at your disposal.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Your network's a little bit deeper.
- 10:23Speaker 2: So I'm not necessarily sure how much of a tweaker
- 10:26Speaker 2: or two you're going to see, But I'm just kind
- 10:28Speaker 2: of going through.
- 10:29Speaker 1: The list of coaches here.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Then there's Scott Leffler, and Scott Leffler brought on in
- 10:34Speaker 2: twenty twenty five to coach the quarterbacks.
- 10:36Speaker 1: He coaches hard.
- 10:37Speaker 2: I do know that he is someone who's demanding, very
- 10:41Speaker 2: focused on the fundamental aspect of coaching that position. The
- 10:45Speaker 2: only other time he'd been in the NFL previously was
- 10:47Speaker 2: in two thousand and eight with the Detroit Lions, where
- 10:49Speaker 2: I believe Dan Orlovski was on that staff, was on
- 10:52Speaker 2: that in that quarterback room as well. Dan Rolovski of
- 10:55Speaker 2: course now a major media presence out there. But I
- 11:00Speaker 2: think for continuity purposes adding keeping someone like a Scott
- 11:04Speaker 2: Leffler would make a lot of sense. And I think
- 11:06Speaker 2: he's always going to continue to improve the longer that
- 11:09Speaker 2: he's around this quarterback room. Jaywen Hurts, Tanner McKee, But
- 11:13Speaker 2: everything that you sort of glean and we only got
- 11:16Speaker 2: a chance to talk to Scott Leffler once and that
- 11:18Speaker 2: was in the summer, but you like the stops that
- 11:21Speaker 2: he's been along the way, the quarterbacks that he's coached.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Going back to Michigan, with Tom Brady, He's coached the
- 11:27Speaker 2: multitude of different quarterbacks with different skill sets, and the
- 11:30Speaker 2: fact that he coaches hard, I believe that that is
- 11:33Speaker 2: well suited for what Jaywen Hurts needs and for continuity purposes.
- 11:37Speaker 2: I go back to that you can't keep swapping out
- 11:39Speaker 2: quarterback coaches and not expected to affect the quarterback in
- 11:43Speaker 2: a tangible way. But Sean Mannion is coming from a
- 11:47Speaker 2: background of a quarterback coach, so he may have his
- 11:50Speaker 2: own vision of what he's looking for, and he may
- 11:54Speaker 2: know some different names out there as to prospective candidates
- 11:58Speaker 2: that he may want in how and he may want
- 12:01Speaker 2: to mold Jaywhen Hurts in that quarterback room. So you
- 12:05Speaker 2: look at Aaron moorehead, you look at Scott Leffler. Those
- 12:08Speaker 2: are two names that if you're looking at it from
- 12:11Speaker 2: Sean Mannion's perspective, it might make some sense. But again,
- 12:15Speaker 2: he doesn't necessarily have a big rollodex to go from
- 12:19Speaker 2: being just a thirty three year old coach.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Hey, it's that time of the year that everyone's trying

- 15:31Speaker 5: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 15:34Speaker 5: one and up.
- 15:36Speaker 2: And then lastly, you have Jeff stoutlind Jeff Stoutland is
- 15:39Speaker 2: among the most revered position coaches in the NFL, the
- 15:42Speaker 2: best offensive line coach in the NFL, right up there
- 15:44Speaker 2: with Bill Callahan and his track record of success. I
- 15:48Speaker 2: don't even need to go down the list, but you
- 15:50Speaker 2: have Jason Kelsey, Jason Peters, Isaac Saya, Moutlu, Brandon Brooks,
- 15:55Speaker 2: Cam Jurgens, and who was a pro B in twenty
- 15:59Speaker 2: twenty four, had the best season of his young career,
- 16:02Speaker 2: replacing Jason Kelce, Brett Toath, Fred Johnson, Nate Herbig, an
- 16:09Speaker 2: undrafted player. There's just so many names here that he
- 16:12Speaker 2: is directly tied to in terms of getting them to
- 16:17Speaker 2: reach their potential. And I think probably this season the
- 16:20Speaker 2: most I can't come, my gosh, I can't forget Jordan Mailatta,
- 16:24Speaker 2: twenty eighteen draft pick and never playing professional football before.
- 16:28Speaker 2: That may be his best story of development. But I
- 16:31Speaker 2: think even this season getting Fred Johnson to play at
- 16:34Speaker 2: a certain level. He started nine games for the Eagles
- 16:37Speaker 2: last season. Postseason included Brett Toath emerging from NFL limbo
- 16:43Speaker 2: in his seventh NFL season, breaking through and becoming the
- 16:47Speaker 2: top backup at center and guard. Jeff Stotland thinks very
- 16:50Speaker 2: highly of Brett Toath, but those two reserves right there,
- 16:53Speaker 2: who were tasked to task with stepping in and fulfilling
- 16:58Speaker 2: meaningful roles for the Eagles this season shouldn't be discounted.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Sean Mannion may elect to bring in our new run
- 17:05Speaker 2: game coordator. We don't know, but that could be something
- 17:08Speaker 2: that he maybe wants his own guy in there and
- 17:12Speaker 2: has sort of his own ideas of what he wants
- 17:15Speaker 2: this run game to look like. But Jeff Stoutlin at
- 17:19Speaker 2: offensive line, you're not going to find a better O
- 17:21Speaker 2: line coach in the NFL. Whether or not he holds
- 17:24Speaker 2: onto that title as run game coordinator.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Remains to be seen.
- 17:27Speaker 2: But as you can see here, there is just a
- 17:29Speaker 2: lot of coaches here that bring value to the Philadelphia
- 17:34Speaker 2: Eagles on the offensive side. I've talked a lot about
- 17:36Speaker 2: the defensive assistant coaches because I think very highly of them,
- 17:40Speaker 2: but I kind of wanted to shed some light today
- 17:42Speaker 2: on what some of these other coaches provide and maybe
- 17:45Speaker 2: where there could be a tweak or two, because based
- 17:47Speaker 2: on the report Sunday from might have been Mike Aarrafolo,
- 17:52Speaker 2: you know, there are expected to be a you know, changes,
- 17:55Speaker 2: whether or not it's minimal or what the case is.
- 17:58Speaker 2: The time will tell that, but I wanted to just
- 18:01Speaker 2: kind of offer a different perspective here on some of
- 18:03Speaker 2: these coaches whom I've had a chance to sit down with,
- 18:06Speaker 2: whom I've had in some cases whom I've had a
- 18:08Speaker 2: chance to talk to in training camp and players who've
- 18:13Speaker 2: had a chance to offer their opinions on what they
