- 0:00I'm Millie Cod and hour number two.
- 0:02Glad you're with us. The Iowa sports radio network
- 0:04flagship from Des Moines sports station one O 6.3 KXNO bottom of
- 0:09the hour Nick Athan will head down to Kansas City.
- 0:11Get the latest on well on the news from yesterday that an NFL
- 0:15team is moving to another state, which leads us right into the
- 0:19Chicago Bears and our buddy David Kaplan.
- 0:21Centurion Stone of Iowa sponsors KAPI looking for the last minute
- 0:25stocking stuffer. How about a new fireplace?
- 0:27Centurion Stone? They got great stuff.
- 0:29They really do. Hello Cap, how are you?
- 0:33I'm doing awesome. My favorite football team is
- 0:36alone in first. They had a magnificent comeback
- 0:40at Soldier Field. To you all is good man.
- 0:43Yeah, it's, it's been unbelievable, Cap, just the way
- 0:46that this team continues to, you know, find ways to win games.
- 0:49What is that, like 6 or 7? Here's the list here.
- 0:52Green Bay, obviously they were down by, they were losing by ten
- 0:55with four minutes left against the Giants.
- 0:57They beat Cincinnati in the final minute.
- 0:59They beat the Vikings in the final minute.
- 1:01They beat the Raiders in the final minute.
- 1:03They beat the Commanders in the fourth quarter.
- 1:06These are all comebacks, Cap, that went their way.
- 1:08It's remarkable. Yeah, Caleb Williams is the
- 1:12number one rated quarterback in the NFL in the fourth quarter
- 1:18when his team is trailing #1 and we're talking ahead of Josh
- 1:23Allen and ahead of all these dudes.
- 1:25Does he have things to work on? Yes.
- 1:27Was their offense not great in the first half?
- 1:30Yes. Except they only got 3
- 1:32possessions and one of them, their head coach, went brain
- 1:35dead at the with a yard or less to go for a first down.
- 1:39I had no idea and I loved Ben Johnson what he could possibly
- 1:44have been thinking when he decided, yeah, let's go for that
- 1:48with a trick play where you not only have to snap it back 7
- 1:52yards to Menon Guy, but you got to snap it between Cole Mets
- 1:56legs. Like, what are we doing?
- 1:59So that was idiotic. And then you only had two other
- 2:02possessions. So the second-half, Caleb was
- 2:05the man. That he was.
- 2:07How do we iron out some of those first half, though?
- 2:10I mean, what, what, what's kind of that next step to get to that
- 2:13level where we go back a couple weeks ago, the first game
- 2:15against the Packers, it was much of the same struggle until the
- 2:18final couple minutes of the first half where we come out
- 2:20firing right away and we see a good 60 minutes of Caleb
- 2:23Williams, not just 30 minutes. One of the things you know, you
- 2:28said how do we, you know, iron out the first half?
- 2:31They only had three possessions. One of them should have been a
- 2:34touchdown. You know, it's your defense.
- 2:36I know Ben Johnson said well, they were over 5 in the red zone
- 2:40in terms of touchdowns and they had the stop on the 1st
- 2:44possession on an incomplete pass in the front right corner of the
- 2:47end zone. They had the fumble that nation
- 2:50right caused off of Josh Jacobs. But in the end, I mean, your
- 2:55defense was giving up eight play, 12 play, 13 yard, 13 play.
- 3:02Like, go look at the drive charts and see how many plays
- 3:05the Packers were able to run. And so you couldn't, you
- 3:08couldn't get off the field, which meant you couldn't get
- 3:11your offense on the field. Cap how much credit to your did
- 3:14your listeners or how many times was Cairo Santos his name
- 3:17invoked because I thought his he was huge.
- 3:20I mean, the way that he's playing the wind that he's
- 3:23factoring that in and make Spanish made all his kicks for
- 3:25Green Bay as well. But his long was 25.
- 3:28I mean, there's Santos out there, not the strongest of legs
- 3:31in those conditions, figuring the wind and putting them
- 3:34through from 51. He had a huge role in this win
- 3:37over the Packers. Massive.
- 3:40And if I didn't pick Caleb Williams as the MVP of the game,
- 3:45I would have gone Cairo Santos. I would have looked at the
- 3:49fumble by Josh Jacobs and Nishan Wright.
- 3:52Stripped out, phenomenal play. DJ Moore, phenomenal.
- 3:57I mean, if anybody's in like a Renegade fantasy league and they
- 4:01take DJ Moore out in game, I don't know if you know what
- 4:04Renegade is. It's a fantasy league where you
- 4:06can literally coach your team the whole game.
- 4:09And a friend of mine said I took DJ out.
- 4:12Well, DJ made him pay because he went off and then got the 46
- 4:16yarder to win the game for the Bears on a sensational throw,
- 4:21which by the way, Pro Football Focus just ranked at the number
- 4:25one throw in the NFL this year. So that was super cool.
- 4:29But DJ obviously deserves a lot of love.
- 4:32But Cairo Santos, you are the man and all these people that
- 4:36every week I get these tweets or calls to the show or my producer
- 4:41Shane Orling, who I love dearly, but this guy's terrible.
- 4:45He can't make a 59 or 62 yarder. Let's worry about being
- 4:50accurate, because if that guy hadn't been accurate from 4643
- 4:54and 51, we're having a very different discussion today.
- 4:58No doubt about it and had to use a lot of English there with the
- 5:01winds and that one, I don't know how it snuck back around it, but
- 5:05he did and he got it done. Veteran kicker.
- 5:07He doesn't have the boomer leg, but certainly was making some
- 5:10big kicks for the Bears and has throughout the course of most of
- 5:13this season. Cap, I want to go to this and
- 5:16let's have some fun. Bears are in the number one
- 5:19seed. The NFC goes through Chicago.
- 5:23The way that this team is built, coupled with the likelihood of
- 5:26January weather in Chicago. The answer is yes.
- 5:29They're built for this, aren't they?
- 5:32They are. They're absolutely built for it.
- 5:35Can they go to the Super Bowl? They absolutely can.
- 5:39Do I think that the Rams right now, because they got a veteran
- 5:42quarterback playing at an MVP level, might be a better team?
- 5:47Maybe. Maybe.
- 5:49I know they get to the quarterback better with Jared
- 5:51Verse, Byron Young. You got a good football team.
- 5:54They absolutely do. But you're telling me Bears
- 5:58can't run the football in the cold?
- 6:00I'm going to tell you you're wrong.
- 6:01You're telling me that that team doesn't get takeaways?
- 6:04I'm going to tell you, maybe it's not sustainable next year
- 6:07and the year after, but absolutely this team can come
- 6:13from behind and they're never out of a game.
- 6:15So if it if they do settle for the 2 and it does go to one of
- 6:18the NFC West teams, the number one seed, then it looks as
- 6:21though, I mean it. Is it inevitable that the
- 6:24Packers would make their way back to Soldier Field?
- 6:27Well, it was right now today it would season ended, you'd be
- 6:31playing the Packers 2 versus 7 right here in Soldier Field.
- 6:36So we'll see. There's two more to go.
- 6:39You only got to worry about this game this week, Sunday Night
- 6:42Football. That Niners team does not
- 6:44pressure the quarterback well, does not stop the run well that
- 6:49they can score. I think the over is the play
- 6:51this week. Does that mean the Bears win or
- 6:53lose? That remains to be seen. 52 1/2,
- 6:56the number at that one currently at Circus Sports for the Bears
- 6:59and the Niners. You mentioned the offense of
- 7:02what we saw from the 49ers, the opportunistic defense that we've
- 7:06seen throughout the course of this year.
- 7:08You wonder about the sustainability, but what is it
- 7:10about Dennis Allen's teams that year after year?
- 7:13Historically, they are so good at generating turnovers, even
- 7:16when you kind of look at the parts and they don't add up to a
- 7:18great defense. How do they first force so many
- 7:20turnovers? First of all, Al Harris, their
- 7:25defensive backs coach, he's really, really good at getting
- 7:31his guys because he was that way as a player with the Green Bay
- 7:35Packers and he coached that way in Dallas last year.
- 7:37Getting his guys to flock to the ball and be as aggressive as
- 7:43possible. It's like they shot right,
- 7:44ripping the ball out of Josh Jacobs hands for Kevin Byard,
- 7:47who made Pro Bowl today, leading the NFL in interceptions.
- 7:51These guys are just ball Hawks. When the Bears drafted Manon Guy
- 7:57with the 7th pick from Rutgers, was Pacheco with the Chiefs the
- 8:007th rounder Trent I think. He was, yeah.
- 8:03So another 7th. Becca was the 7th.
- 8:05Run. That's what I thought, yeah.
- 8:06So, so another seventh round, this Manon guy, Trent, our Trent
- 8:10Cappy Swift runs. He's been really nice running
- 8:12back. But Manon guy runs violently.
- 8:14So does Pacheco. I think it's a Rutgers Trent
- 8:17trade. Madonka has been really good and
- 8:19seems as though he's getting better as the season gets
- 8:22longer. Yeah, he looks really, really
- 8:26good. I mean, locked in, he takes care
- 8:30of the football and he was a guy that did not have issues for the
- 8:37duration of his college career in terms of putting the ball on
- 8:40the deck. So we'll see.
- 8:42It's a violent, physical game. It just takes a well placed
- 8:45helmet that hits the ball in the right spot and the ball's out.
- 8:49But he's done a really good job protecting it so far.
- 8:52Kathy, I want to have you take us to Chicago and what's going
- 8:56on right now we've as long as I've talked to you, as long as
- 8:58Ken's talked to you talk about this is a bear's town.
- 9:01That's all that matters are the grand scheme of things doesn't
- 9:03matter. Cubs, White Sox, Bulls, Black
- 9:05Ops. It's a of Bears town with this
- 9:07run that they're on right now. This feels different than some
- 9:10of the ones, even the Super Bowl team with all the questions of
- 9:12Grossman, the good runs that they've had under Orton, the 15
- 9:16win season, those kind of things.
- 9:18How it's feeling right now and and what makes it so special
- 9:21when the Bears are playing and winning like this.
- 9:25So you have Cubs fans, you have a bigger base of Cubs fans, and
- 9:29you do White Sox fans, but there's still a very passionate
- 9:33group of White Sox fans. But most Sox fans aren't rooting
- 9:37for the Cubs. Most Cubs fans aren't rooting
- 9:40for the Sox. You have Blackhawks fans.
- 9:44They haven't been relevant since 2016.
- 9:47It's more of a small group, vocal, nice fan base, but not
- 9:53everyone's a hockey fan other than Connor Bedard.
- 9:57You'd be hard pressed to walk down the street and ask somebody
- 9:59to name another Blackhawks play. I don't think they could do it.
- 10:03I I'm a sportscaster here. We never talk about the
- 10:06Blackhawks. I could probably name you 10
- 10:09guys on the roster back when they won the the Stanley Cup.
- 10:13I could name you every guy. I mean, it was lock in city on
- 10:19whenever they played, even during the regular season.
- 10:22It's not that way. The Bulls, the Bulls are
- 10:24irrelevant, truly irrelevant. And it's a joke that that crowd
- 10:29franchise has fallen as far as it has.
- 10:32I mean, really, really awfully sad.
- 10:35And then you got the Bears and the Chicago Bears.
- 10:38Everybody here, if you grew up here, you're a Bears fan or
- 10:43there's something wrong with you.
- 10:44And so that, it's just been amazing to see the city's on
- 10:49fire about the Bears. We began the conversation.
- 10:52Missouri, Kansas fighting amongst themselves, Illinois,
- 10:55Indiana, not quite the same kind of rivalry, doesn't have the
- 10:58date back to the Civil War at the same level, but Hammond, IN.
- 11:03Is this real? What is this is just more
- 11:05politicking, What's happening? We saw it happen and it really
- 11:07happened in Kansas City. Could the same thing be
- 11:10happening to Chicago and Hammond, IN?
- 11:12But I'll be stunned if they end up in Hammond, IN, and I'll
- 11:15blast them if they do. You cannot move to the Chicago
- 11:20Bears to Indiana AB, Hammond, IN, where they spotted a bunch
- 11:26of bears. Not Bears trucks, but trucks
- 11:29that went to go test the soil and the property that they were
- 11:32looking at in that area the last few days.
- 11:36Yeah. You know what the backdrop is?
- 11:37Freaking oil rig. No, it's not going to happen.
- 11:42This is not me crapping all over the state of Indiana.
- 11:46The Chicago Bears are not moving to Indiana.
- 11:50If they do, that will be a terrible legacy for Kevin
- 11:55Warren. You move the Bears where?
- 11:58Indiana. Oh, that's that's interesting.
- 12:01I don't think George Mccaskey would ever let that happen.
- 12:03I don't. Good stuff.
- 12:05I want to talk a little baseball with you, Captain.
- 12:06I'm going to start with the White Sox because they made some
- 12:08news. I think his name is Murakami.
- 12:10How you say his name. He's got some pop in his about.
- 12:13What does that signing signify, if anything, to White Sox fans?
- 12:17Like, I don't think that they're all in in 2026, but they at
- 12:22least they made somewhat of a splash in the free agent market
- 12:26cap. Would you go that far?
- 12:28Yeah, I thought it was really cool that the White Sox did
- 12:31that. Look, I don't know how good this
- 12:32kid is. I know he's got big, big power.
- 12:36It seems like he's got a personality whether he's good or
- 12:40not. They finally have become
- 12:42relevant again. Now, are they going to go out
- 12:45and spend more money and get a really pretty high end starter
- 12:49and go get a back end of the bullpen guy?
- 12:52Maybe. I don't know.
- 12:53I mean, I know Jerry is he squeaks when he walks.
- 12:57That guy doesn't spend any money on anything, but he was able to
- 13:00talk them into spending 37 million on this kid.
- 13:04I hope he's good. That's one and then two, they're
- 13:09going to trade Louise Robert here.
- 13:11They're going to move the money off the books.
- 13:13I probably to the Mets. Reds are in there.
- 13:16They'll be a handful you're not going to get much back from.
- 13:19Certainly not much is going to help you this year.
- 13:21How much money are you asking that team to eat?
- 13:24Because if you're going to trade him to, let's say it's the Mets,
- 13:29we want you to take all 20 million, well, then you're
- 13:31getting me back. But if Jerry says, hey, you know
- 13:34what, we'll eat money wherever you trade him to the Reds.
- 13:38But the more we eat, the better prospect we get.
- 13:41That's how you should do that deal.
- 13:43Like, if that's the case and if they truly are in about getting
- 13:47the best prospects to help the White Sox down the road on the
- 13:52field, then eat whatever you've got to eat.
- 13:55That's a fact. So we'll see.
- 13:57I don't see any scenario where he's on this team.
- 14:01Christian Bethencourt not exactly moving the needle.
- 14:03Their latest free agent signee, $1.6 million if he does take us
- 14:08into the Alex Bregman part. Obviously what we saw from Shaw
- 14:11this season and is this real, the potential of Alex Bregman
- 14:14making his way to Chicago. I mean, what the Cubs have done
- 14:19so far, and again, it can all change.
- 14:21There's a lot of good players still out there.
- 14:23What the Cubs have done so far is an embarrassment.
- 14:26It really is OK. Phil Maiton, he's a nice setup
- 14:29guy, He's fine. Hobie Milner, Caleb Theobard,
- 14:34they're fine. Who are you adding to your
- 14:37starting rotation? I don't see anyone beating Kyle
- 14:40Tucker's door down. So you tell me you can't go back
- 14:42to him and say, hey, let's do a shorter, higher AAV deal Now.
- 14:47If you don't think he can play well, then don't even get
- 14:49involved. That's a different discussion.
- 14:52But you've got to add more offense.
- 14:54And if you bring Alex pregnant here, then what are you doing
- 14:57with Matt Shaw? You developed him to get into
- 15:00this point. second-half of the season, he was the finalist for
- 15:03Gold Glove. He's got some pop in his bat.
- 15:06What are you doing with him? And if he's just going to be a
- 15:10bench guy or what does that say about the guy who was the number
- 15:13one prospect in your system just a year ago now?
- 15:16Are you extending? Nico Horner makes 11,000,000.
- 15:19He's out of contract after this year.
- 15:21How much is it going to cost to extend them?
- 15:24Three for 64 for 80. He's going to get paid.
- 15:28So if you're not going to pay that, then you got to absolutely
- 15:34deal him now, get him off the team, put Matt Shaw at second
- 15:38base, and then sign Alex Bregman.
- 15:41But I'll believe it when I see it because that team really
- 15:45frustrates me. Is there a chance Nico Horner
- 15:48moves on Cap that they don't resign him?
- 15:51Well, they got to extend them. Are you going to let them get
- 15:55the free agency and then just get a draft pick for a Gold
- 15:58Glove caliber? Second player, I love him.
- 16:02Hell of a player. He was second in all of baseball
- 16:05and batting average with runners in scoring position.
- 16:08So if you don't get him extended then what are you going to do?
- 16:13Let him get to next fall going into a labor stoppage and not
- 16:16have his rights? That would be idiocy.
- 16:20Kappa, we're off next Wednesday, so we'll impose on you on
- 16:24Tuesday again next week if that's good for you.
- 16:27Yeah, I'll make anything work for you guys.
- 16:29You're the best, my friend. Happy holidays, capper.
- 16:31Appreciate it. Thanks for what you do for us.
- 16:33Join this Bears Run for all the Bears fans in our market.
- 16:36And I'm guessing it's good for business.
- 16:38I eat yours as well, to say the very least.
- 16:40Thank you pal. I did a video at the cheese
- 16:43department at Whole Foods the other day.
- 16:45When the Bears clinched, my son and I sat in my truck watching
- 16:49the end of the dot Lions Steelers on my phone.
- 16:52They won. We went in.
- 16:53I stood in front of all the cheese and I held up a block of
- 16:56cheddar. I said, hey, who clinched the
- 16:58playoff berth? Oh not these guys.
- 17:00Flipped the cheese back, got 120,000 views.
- 17:04Like, that's how hot the Bears are.
- 17:06That's good stuff. Thank you, pal.
- 17:07Appreciate it. Cap talk to you next week.
- 17:09Merry Christmas. Good to talk to you.
- 17:10Thank you. Merry Christmas, capper to you
- 17:12and to yours and all of you out there who celebrate.
- 17:16All right, good stuff out of Cappy Centurion Stone of Iowa.
- 17:19They sponsor a Cappy on a weekly basis.
- 17:23Probably not crossing your mind right now projects inside the
- 17:26house or outside of the house, but it might at some point.
- 17:28And if indeed it does and you want some, some stone work done,
- 17:32whether it's their own product, they're Centurion stone or
- 17:35natural stone, of course, they've got both as well.
- 17:37Centurion Stone of iwood.com. Check out the website, you can
- 17:40see the gallery, see some of the work that they do, some of the
- 17:43services, etcetera, etcetera. Visit the showroom.
- 17:46It'll blow you away really well. The location is 5525 NE 22nd St.
- 17:53in Des Moines. It's directly across the street
- 17:55from the Animal Rescue League. I'm sure ours, you know, kind of
- 17:59vary during this time of year. But Centurion Stone of Iowa, if
- 18:02you have a project in 2026 that you might be thinking about, I
- 18:07think about Centurion Stone of Iowa.
- 18:10Good stuff out of Cappy Hammond, India.
- 18:13I, I, I honestly, I think it's politics.
- 18:15I think it's leverage if nothing else, and I think that the
- 18:19governor of Indiana was in on it because as soon as that whisper
- 18:22got out there very quickly, he had a statement welcoming them.
- 18:27And why wouldn't he, right? Why wouldn't he?
- 18:28Of course you're going to do that for your constituents.
- 18:31But that one would surprise me. So what's wrong with Soldier
- 18:34Field? It does parking, yes.
- 18:37There's nowhere to park there is very difficult to get there.
- 18:40Yep, even with the trains. Very tough spot we took.
- 18:45An Uber and we had to walk through an underground tunnel
- 18:47or. Something.
- 18:47Oh yeah, I'm sure tailgating incredibly difficult.
- 18:50It's just and it's old, even with the renovation, with the.
- 18:53Renovations, yeah. It looks like a spaceship.
- 18:56It's ugly. Yeah.
- 18:57The historical part of it where you had to still keep the
- 18:59pillar. So you tried to do that and make
- 19:00it modern. Still, they're not enough Luxury
- 19:03boxes. We know that's.
- 19:05The new. Environment for it, and in
- 19:08today's environment, Super Bowls we're going to get.
- 19:11One national champions we're going to get.
- 19:13One, all those different aspects, big concerts, yeah,
- 19:17it's one thing to have it in July when the Stones are there.
- 19:19And that's when I was there your June whatever.
- 19:21Yeah. However, yeah, A.
- 19:23Little bit different in, well, what's starting October through
- 19:28April that's a valid. Point, you can't try.
- 19:30It's a valid point, and that's one of the things that the boxes
- 19:33you're checking in. The Kansas move is all of those
- 19:35big events. Final Fours, national
- 19:37championship, Super Bowls. You'll get those.
- 19:40This just popped in my head when I was driving a lot of
- 19:42windshield time. As you know, around this time
- 19:43I'll. Say.
- 19:44And it was on our way back from Sioux City Sunday, and I don't
- 19:48know even what I was listening to or why it jumped into my.
- 19:51Mind, why weren't you listening to the Des Moines or the Iowa
- 19:54Sports Radio affiliate? Because I was in between.
- 19:57OK. But or actually, I was listening
- 19:59to a game, that's what it was. But my mind was wandering and I
- 20:04was thinking about the concert that I went up to at Jack Trice.
- 20:08And all these different realms where private equity coming to
- 20:11the Big 12, private equity at Utah.
- 20:13How do you make these things a different kind of idea?
- 20:17Why don't you make a concert series with a couple of
- 20:20different artists where you go to all Big 12 stadiums during
- 20:23the summer time? What?
- 20:24It did to Jack Tricen. Was it a May concert?
- 20:262 years. Ago it was I was there, I
- 20:29didn't. It was a country artist, right?
- 20:30George Strait, I think. Yeah, he he works.
- 20:32Yes, something like. That and it was packed.
- 20:35It was now the beer line sucked. That's all I cared about, right?
- 20:39That was why I was there. But you jump around the big and
- 20:42you make this a concert series with just those.
- 20:46And that's something that as a money maker for the Big 12 as a
- 20:48whole. Yeah, I don't know the.
- 20:50And you're not going to put it at AT&T and Stadium.
- 20:52Now we're going to put this, we're going to go to Fort Worth,
- 20:55we're going to have this. It's going to be there.
- 20:57Just something to generate revenue in a different way.
- 20:59I don't know why it popped in my mind, but it did.
- 21:01Well, it didn't Kinnick do a couple of those recently.
- 21:03They have. That's another one Big 10.
- 21:07They're also looking at private equity.
- 21:09I think that's something. But I just thought with your
- 21:10Mark and obviously his connections that that was
- 21:13something that possibly could make some sense down the line.
- 21:16We'll talk to Nick Athen when we come back.
- 21:18We're with you until 2:00 off the bench.
- 21:20You know, Sean is on vacation today.
- 21:22Lucas Strain will be in until 5 overtime Iowa, 5 until 6:00.
- 21:26Then all of the local shows are off through, well, through the
- 21:30weekend. Everybody's back on Monday.
- 21:33Or you know what? Alec and Heather aren't working
- 21:37Friday, are they? I don't think they.
- 21:39Are not that I don't want. I don't think so.
- 21:40I think everybody, everybody right, good.
- 21:43Miller Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 21:45I'm Miller Condon. Welcome back.
- 21:46Just past 130 on a Tuesday. Our final half hour before we
- 21:51get out of here, turn things over to off the bench.
- 21:53Lucas Strain company coming up here at at 2:00.
- 21:57Let's get to Nick Athen. Want to go down can city, Nick?
- 22:00Mitch Holtis joins us on tape. So I want to have a little back
- 22:03and forth with Nick and he joins us.
- 22:05Happy happy holidays. Merry Christmas to you.
- 22:07Nick Athen. It's good to speak with you.
- 22:09Appreciate you coming on big news.
- 22:11Obviously, it's been rumored to be out there seemingly getting
- 22:14closer. The moves been out there for a
- 22:16while. You've been saying it for for
- 22:18more than a while that you could see this coming and seemingly is
- 22:23here. So is this a done deal?
- 22:25Is there no going back from this, Nick?
- 22:29Yeah, I mean, they they have, they agreed to the term sheet
- 22:31Friday and and and a few details were hired out Monday morning
- 22:35before the press conference announced that the lawyers are
- 22:37going to put it all on paper. But yeah, it's my understanding
- 22:40that this is a done deal. It was a done deal pretty much
- 22:43on Friday after the Chiefs once again spoke to officials in
- 22:47Missouri who just couldn't ever put together a concrete plan.
- 22:51It's certainly not a plan that included putting a Dome facility
- 22:55somewhere in Missouri. It was just a, it was just a
- 22:59cluster mess. The, the politics in Kansas City
- 23:01and Jeff City have always been bad.
- 23:03And, and this just kind of highlights, you know, you losing
- 23:06the, you've lost the Kansas City Kings, you're going to lose the
- 23:08Chiefs, you're probably going to lose the Kansas City Royals as
- 23:11well, not to mention the the, the Rams and the Cardinals.
- 23:16So it just this is bad. It's just bad for the city.
- 23:21Sorry for the residents of Jackson County, but this was a
- 23:24no brainer for the Hunt family. It made a lot of sense.
- 23:27There was never a doubt in my mind that I ever wavered on the
- 23:30fact this is also being going to be the outcome.
- 23:32We, Ken and I, both have been a little bit surprised about the
- 23:36back and forth between the Missouri side and the Kansas
- 23:39side. I mean, is this real rivalry?
- 23:42Is it? I mean, obviously you go way
- 23:43back in time we talked about in the Civil War, but what is what
- 23:47is the back and forth between both sides of the river?
- 23:51Well, it's just the ultimate border war.
- 23:53It was kind of started when Kansas and Missouri played
- 23:55football, you know, back in the, you know, where they play 120
- 23:58consecutive years or, or something like that.
- 24:01And it just kind of took a life its own as other sports got
- 24:03involved. And then about 6-7 years ago,
- 24:06Kansas, Missouri signed this border war treaty where they
- 24:09wouldn't purge, you know, entities from one state into the
- 24:13other. And then lost in all this is
- 24:15locked in insurance company, the largest insurance company in the
- 24:17world, leading Kansas City for Johnson County in Kansas.
- 24:21So, you know, I think from a fan perspective, I get why
- 24:26Missourians feel this way. But, you know, Kansas represents
- 24:31about 65 percent, 70% of season ticket holders for Johnson
- 24:36County. They all travel in the state to
- 24:40come there. So now it's just, you know, turn
- 24:42around is fair play. I guess the biggest thing that
- 24:46confuses me, to be honest with you, is sentimentality and the
- 24:50fighting back and forth. That Arrowhead is this, you
- 24:53know, cathedral. And it is it also was hosted 50
- 24:57years of fertility until Pastor Mahomes came along.
- 25:00And that's when it kind of really developed his luster and
- 25:04a place that was, you know, no team wanted to go play.
- 25:07And it kind of created that atmosphere.
- 25:09This is the greatest place in the world.
- 25:11But listen, don't stadiums are here to come.
- 25:15You guys don't stay is going in Denver.
- 25:17You got it going in Washington. You're going to have it in
- 25:19Chicago. You're going to have it in
- 25:20Kansas City. First thing for fans, this is
- 25:23the. Future.
- 25:24Yeah, no, you're 1000% right. Every AFC West stadium.
- 25:28I, I guess technically the Chargers not a Dome stadium
- 25:31because it's not enclosed, right?
- 25:34Absolutely is. So you're going to get Super
- 25:36Bowls, you're going to get Final Fours, you're going to get
- 25:38national championship college football games, you're going to
- 25:41get the who's who of the concert tours and doesn't just
- 25:44necessarily have to be in the summer months.
- 25:47I, I, I guess I don't understand the pushback, Nick.
- 25:49I really don't. I think that this is a positive.
- 25:52Again, I don't live there, I'm not real familiar with the area,
- 25:55but boy seems like a win to me. Yeah, it's a huge one.
- 25:58I mean, I see the people that are upset about it.
- 26:01I'm not even sure they're season ticket holders.
- 26:03You know, I think these are the guys that go get the go get the
- 26:05tickets, you know, that are half price on game day.
- 26:08I mean, it's a no brainer. I mean, the NFL is a business.
- 26:12You and I have been around long enough, no offense, Trent, but
- 26:16but again, you and I have been around.
- 26:17We've seen any every iteration of the sport.
- 26:20We've seen a lot of politics in the sport, we've seen stuff like
- 26:24this happen all over the place. But when you look at the Chief
- 26:27history and Arrowhead is a beautiful thing.
- 26:31But this puts the Chiefs in a conversation where they they
- 26:35they are now set for the next 50 years.
- 26:39The heirs to the Hunt family are not going to have to worry about
- 26:42where to play. You couldn't.
- 26:44You couldn't put a Dome on Arrowhead.
- 26:46You couldn't really do much because that concrete is 5558
- 26:49years old. So at the end of the day, this
- 26:52makes a lot of sense. And again, we're talking 2031.
- 26:56That's five years. I just hope I live long enough
- 26:58to see the Dang thing. So people aren't going to
- 27:01remember what they said on December 23rd in 2025.
- 27:05And all these fans who say they're not going to go there,
- 27:08yeah, they will. If the team's good, they're
- 27:09going to go, you know, and it's going to be just as expensive
- 27:12There's it's just as expensive it is in Kansas City.
- 27:15It's expensive to go to a game in Kansas City.
- 27:18The sea prices are through the roof.
- 27:20And yeah, they'll probably be just as high going into Kansas,
- 27:22but it ain't going to be too much of a jump to what they're
- 27:25paying now. Yeah, that kind of I think
- 27:28missed out a lot of people. The price point and and what
- 27:30things are going to look like in five years, who knows.
- 27:32I mean, what as we've seen the rising prices of everything that
- 27:35has obviously happened here over the last five years, just go
- 27:39back to what it was then and what it is now.
- 27:42One other aspect of that How big?
- 27:45How big is this stadium? Baller, I think.
- 27:48Yeah, it'll be smaller. So you couple that with the
- 27:51luxury boxes and a lot more people and a lot more boxes
- 27:53here, that's going to feel a lot different too.
- 27:57Yeah, I think that the actual feeding capacity of the bowl and
- 28:01upper bowl and middle bowl itself is going to be about 64
- 28:04to 68,000. But that's not going to include
- 28:06sweet, you know, special feeding in the end zone.
- 28:11All those things are going to be separate.
- 28:13So I think it, you know, it'll probably be over 70,000 at least
- 28:16for sure. You know, I don't know how many
- 28:18sweet boxes are going to do where they're going to stack
- 28:21them. You know this the Chiefs are
- 28:24going out kind of going after what you're about to see in
- 28:27Tennessee. If you haven't seen the pictures
- 28:29of the new stadium, Tennessee do it.
- 28:31It's the most impressive stadium design I have ever seen.
- 28:35And I've seen a lot of them. And I think when the Chiefs saw
- 28:38that they were totally convinced they're going to Kansas.
- 28:40But I think you have to look at the capacity of the the seating
- 28:44itself, 64 to 68,000 and then the prime seats and the suite
- 28:49and the, you know, the end zone seating.
- 28:51And if there's a tear, if there's a tear section up on
- 28:54top, yeah, those all things are going to be done.
- 28:56It's kind of a separate count, I think.
- 28:58I don't know that 100%, but that's what I believe.
- 29:00So is that the pushback that, that there's going to be fewer
- 29:04seats for the, you know, the average fan, if you want to call
- 29:08it that, that most of the, you know, the the millionaires and
- 29:11the billionaires and the people that can afford those luxury
- 29:13boxes catering to them is at the expense maybe of the quote
- 29:17little guy. Well, I don't know if that's
- 29:20really the case. I mean, you're talking about
- 29:22maybe taking out having what, 810 thousand less seats, but
- 29:29you're going to have a Dome experience.
- 29:31Again, there's going to be other places in this game you can buy.
- 29:34I mean, look at Buffalo. I think there's this only
- 29:3665,000. The Plan stadiums in Washington
- 29:40and then in Chicago are about the same.
- 29:44The Raiders stadium is what 66,000?
- 29:47So the the 60 mid 60s ever 60s seems to be the trend for a lot
- 29:53of things and partly because they don't sell out in some of
- 29:56those cities. So those those seats up top are
- 29:58vacant. So I, I think they're just
- 30:00building a more compact and more intimate, you know, arena in
- 30:06which to watch football games. Now, the biggest negative for me
- 30:10is from an architectural standpoint, you can never
- 30:13replace the sight lines at Arrowhead.
- 30:14It's impossible. There's no way to replicate it
- 30:17or duplicate it. That's going to be one thing I
- 30:20think fans are going to miss. And I think that's why they're
- 30:22shrinking it down to where you can keep some of that, some of
- 30:25that and still feel like, you know, you're in a packed, packed
- 30:29environment with 70,000 plus. Not an environment.
- 30:32You've been very often here the last decade, arcade, meaningless
- 30:35games, and it looked meaningless against Tennessee, got down to
- 30:37nothing and then fell away late in that game after Minshew got
- 30:40knocked out. What are you looking to see here
- 30:43these last couple of weeks? What are you looking for as a
- 30:45fan? Because we know you're going to
- 30:46be watching All 60. Maybe we'll see.
- 30:50But, you know, I, I listen, I from a pure theatrical, you
- 30:58know, if Chris Olidulkin beats the oh God, that's going to be
- 31:01the story. So if the Broncos allow that,
- 31:04their postseason, their postseason record, their
- 31:07postseason. They don't deserve to be there.
- 31:09Yeah, but I all I want to see honestly is I just want, I don't
- 31:13care about the old, old dolphin factor.
- 31:16I care about I want to see the young draft picks get a chance
- 31:18to play. Andy Reid and and Matt Nagy and
- 31:21and C Spagnola have not allowed the young kids to play.
- 31:24You got nothing to play for. The Chiefs have a shot at
- 31:27getting the 8th pick. Right now there are 12.
- 31:31I think they'll end up around 10.
- 31:33Last time they picked 10. They did got a pretty good
- 31:35player, Patrick Mahomes, but I just want to see the young guys
- 31:38play that, that's all. I mean, this is going to be a
- 31:41glorified scrimmage. I think it's the bon voyage for
- 31:43Travis Kelce. I think that's going to be the
- 31:46whole theme tomorrow or Thursday and into the broadcast.
- 31:50It's all the promotions is about Travis Kelce.
- 31:53Yep on him. I'm announcing on Thursday this
- 31:56is it and saying his bid adieu to the Chief Kingdom and fandom
- 32:02and become Mr. Taylor Swift here in about 6 months and call it a
- 32:07career. That's what I think should
- 32:10happen now whether or not it does.
- 32:11But that's that's the only conversation to give Travis
- 32:14Kelsey a proper send off, if indeed this is his last game at
- 32:17Arrowhead. Yeah, it feels like it to me.
- 32:19Nick, I totally agree with you. Hey, brother.
- 32:20Listen, Merry Christmas. Thanks for doing this for us.
- 32:23Appreciate it. And we'll talk to you in 2026.
- 32:27Merry Christmas. Happy New Year, Nick.
- 32:28Thank you all. Right.
- 32:29Merry Christmas. Good luck to your Broncos.
- 32:31I'm I'm slightly rooting for them for the for the Super Bowl.
- 32:34OK. All right.
- 32:35Thank you, buddy. I'm good to hear from you, Nick
- 32:37Athen, on the Kansas City Chiefs and the pending move to the
- 32:41state of Kansas. All right, we'll come back wrap
- 32:43things up on a Tuesday. Got to have your Football
- 32:46Tuesday picks ready to go. What football we're not making
- 32:49picks against in the in the deal.
- 32:50Are we you working Friday? No, but the numbers are no yet.
- 32:55I have 0 preparation and I don't think Shawn's ready well.
- 32:58He should be. We're not ready.
- 33:01No, don't flex. We.
- 33:02Next now, next Friday, we do work Yes of.
- 33:05Course. So we'll do pick.
- 33:07No, we do picks every single week leading up to the I'm not
- 33:09ready, you got 6 minutes, I'm not ready, 6 minutes.
- 33:14Miller Excuse me, Condon back after these.
- 33:17And then off the bench, who knows football better?
- 33:21The war wages on. It's time for the afternoon
- 33:24pickup sponsored by Circus Sports on 106.3, KXNO and the
- 33:30Iowa Sports Radio Network. I'm Hillary Condon.
- 33:34Welcome back. Time for our picks.
- 33:36I wanted to be on record. I am filing an official appeal.
- 33:40Are you working Friday? No.
- 33:44Yes, last day of the week, OK. By the way, I love my picks.
- 33:50When I get to those coming up, I got a lot of confidence.
- 33:52Well. You went what, in four last?
- 33:54Week. Well, I can't be much worse.
- 33:56All right, let's get. So what is our total then?
- 33:58Did you catch me? Are you?
- 33:59Is this why we're doing this? Because you're starting to
- 34:01narrow the gap. Well, narrow maybe.
- 34:04I'm 4042 and two, you're 4538 and two, you still got a
- 34:08commanding lead in our head to head and I still have Louisville
- 34:12from last week pending. They are winning by 4.
- 34:14What did you get that number? 6 1/2.
- 34:16Oh, you got the right number. Yes, absolutely got the right
- 34:18side of it, but closing value in bowl games, not nearly as
- 34:22important as it feels it is in a real football.
- 34:24But I do have the honors this week and we kick things off with
- 34:27a bowl game. I mentioned earlier, I'm still
- 34:29going to grab New Mexico plus the 2 1/2 against the Gophers.
- 34:32Minnesota travel. Darius Taylor, will he, won't
- 34:35he? I just love Eck.
- 34:37You do wonder. Jason Eck didn't really jump
- 34:39into a lot of jobs. The New Mexico coach after what
- 34:41a great job he did this season if he's just waiting for
- 34:44Wisconsin, his alma mater, to open.
- 34:46Since it didn't open, I'm not going to take a job for a year.
- 34:48I'll stick around for another season.
- 34:50We'll grab the Lobos plus 2 1/2. Let's continue with the Mountain
- 34:54West. San Diego State against this
- 34:56depleted North Texas team lost so many guys. 3 1/2 is the
- 35:01number here with a great you. Know that's on my list.
- 35:04That's all right. Very rare this year that we've
- 35:06been on the same side of things. We'll try it for this one.
- 35:09San Diego State, the Aztecs, plus 3 1/2 to the NFL.
- 35:12We go. We start things up.
- 35:13For me on Saturday, I'm grabbing the Chargers and laying the 1
- 35:171/2. Houston's defense travels.
- 35:19I know it, it's Herbert. It feels like things are
- 35:22clicking and maybe underrated how good this Chargers defense
- 35:25is against the offensive line of Houston.
- 35:27I like it. Going to take the chargers -1
- 35:301/2 Said earlier I had it at 2 1/2.
- 35:32Now it's three, but we'll still lead it.
- 35:33Gimme the 49ers. Can the magic dust continue for
- 35:37my Bears? Not seen it this week on the
- 35:39road. Gimme San Francisco laying the
- 35:41field goal. My best bet of the week in the
- 35:44NFL. Seattle.
- 35:46Long road trip, Carolina, Things that matter plus 7 1/2 the
- 35:51Panthers my best bet of the week.
- 35:54All right, Trent, I put a lot of thought into these picks.
- 35:56I love my picks this week. Let's get to them.
- 35:59We will start in we'll start tomorrow night the Hawaii Bowl.
- 36:02I love this bowl. One of them I, I hated when
- 36:05COVID got it in 2020, but here we go.
- 36:08I'm going to take Cal Sagapola telly, last chance to say his
- 36:12name. I'll take the point and a half
- 36:13and take Cal over Hawaii. I'm with you on San Diego State,
- 36:17as I showed you when you were talking, thinking that is on my
- 36:19list as well, 3 1/2 San Diego State.
- 36:22I will take that. Here's a huge game that nobody's
- 36:25talking about. And why should they be?
- 36:28These are teams 32 and 31 in the NFL.
- 36:31The winner of this game loses the number one overall pick.
- 36:35I don't think the Raiders are going to screw it up.
- 36:38I really don't. They need a quarterback.
- 36:40Giants have their QB. Giants +2 Detroit.
- 36:44There's actually a 5 1/2 at Hard Rock right now.
- 36:46This number 7 1/2 most places. Max Brosemer starting for the
- 36:50Vikings. I'll take the Lions and my best
- 36:53bet of the week. And you've got him as well.
- 36:54I think they're a legitimate threat to win it all.
- 36:58Been saying it for years. Yes, you have.
- 37:00The Los Angeles Chargers, you're 1000% right.
- 37:02That defense is good. So is Justin Herbert.
- 37:05So is Iranian Hampton. Chargers are a threat.
- 37:08Would you fall off your chair if you get an all LA Super Bowl?
- 37:11I would because the Chargers would be involved.
- 37:14We saw that back in the early 90s.
- 37:15It didn't go well. Stam, Humphreys.
- 37:18Mariam Butts. #17 Stan Humphreys, Good stuff.
- 37:22That's going to do it. And now we're sure Sean and
- 37:24Lucas will participate. Oh, you know what if they don't?
- 37:26That's a zero. That's a no for five.
- 37:28That's a goose egg, Yeah. What they normally do so.
- 37:32Yeah, we should. It was not a great week for any
- 37:34of us last. Week.
- 37:35No, I don't think. Yeah, you're right.
- 37:36I mean my one in five did not hurt that this was a good week
- 37:39to stink. Yes, we all stunk.
- 37:41We did. But we still have the lead over
- 37:42the. Boys, that's the main thing.
- 37:44That's the only thing for me. All right, so tomorrow, what do
- 37:46you do? Tomorrow you're headed to Osage.
- 37:47Yep, going to Osage, probably leave right afternoon, something
- 37:50like that. Get up there, we'll see.
- 37:52Maybe a cocktail before we go over to church and then head
- 37:55over. This is the big family though.
- 37:57Tons of cousins for the kids to play with.
- 37:59Cousins, they usually only see once or twice a year, so always
- 38:02a good time. My cousin Chuck, who just built
- 38:04a new bar in his garage. I'm excited to see that.
- 38:06Nice. Chuck enjoys his alcoholic
- 38:08beverages, so I can't wait to see what he did in the garage
- 38:11with his new bar. And we got a little gift for
- 38:13Chuck. Yeah.
- 38:14You got to help serenade the new bar, right?
- 38:16Yeah. Christen.
- 38:16It, yes, absolutely. So we'll bring a little extra
- 38:18for him to stock the shelves back there, get on the road,
- 38:22back at it then and then the wrapping and everything that
- 38:25happens. And after we get home, about
- 38:27midnight, usually 23 AM, those kids, they'll be raring to go.
- 38:32So what we do is before we wake up, they can go to their
- 38:37stocking. Yep, Yep, they can.
- 38:38We should be. They can see what Santa brought
- 38:40in the stocking. No mom and dad sleep.
- 38:41Yep, no opening presents, nothing like that.
- 38:43But go see what's in the stocking.
- 38:45Santa usually brings at least a little toy or something in
- 38:47there, something to keep him occupied for a while, and then
- 38:50when we hustle down the stairs then we get into all the gifts
- 38:53and everything like. That nice, very nice.
- 38:55How about you and Cindy? And Stella's coming over
- 38:59tomorrow, but she can be here tonight, too.
- 39:01He was here last night. You know what?
- 39:03I actually bought Cindy a Christmas present for the first
- 39:06time in about 10 years. That's awesome.
- 39:07It was. Speaking of Christmas presents,
- 39:09I got something. For you.
- 39:10No, you don't. Why do you do this every year?
- 39:13Yeah, we don't do Christmas. Cindy and I, we by ourselves,
- 39:16right? We get something.
- 39:18If you need something just every single year, just run out and
- 39:21get. You shouldn't have done this.
- 39:22Thank you, brother. I appreciate it.
- 39:23I wish you wouldn't have, but thank you.
- 39:27I appreciate it as I open it up here.
- 39:28What is this bad boy? Oh my God, a Guerrero jersey.
- 39:36Signed what? Vladdy Junior.
- 39:39This isn't cheap dude. Merry Christmas.
- 39:42Oh man, it's our last Christmas together it.
- 39:44Is. Yeah, it is.
- 39:46I feel terrible. You shouldn't, absolutely.
- 39:48Nice man, this is really nice. I I didn't get a frame for you,
- 39:52you got to do that on your own. That's fine.
- 39:53Merry Christmas, everybody out there listening, have a safe,
- 39:56happy and remember it. They go so fast.
- 39:59They go so fast with your kids. Merry Christmas.
