- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Mystery Mirror, a Jewish guessing game for kids.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry from that Jewish moment, and in each episode of Mystery Mirror, you'll become a mystery person, place, or thing from the Jewish world.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: I'll give you clues in three rounds.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Round one, tricky clues, round two, getting closer, and round three, almost there.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Your mission is to guess who or what you are before the big reveal at the end.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Are you ready to look in the mystery mirror?
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Alright detectives, let's begin.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Round one, you are a thing.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: You are usually grey, black, or white, and you're very light.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: You can be carried away by the wind.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: You are soft and powdery, and you are much smaller than you once were.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: You weren't always like this.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: And you can make things look very dusty or dirty.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: If you get on someone's fingers, you might turn them grayish.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Do you know what you are yet?
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Round two.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: You are what is left after something burns.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: You're not the fire, but you do remind people that there once was one.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: You can come from wood, paper, or other things that have burned, and by the time people touch you, you are usually cool.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Sometimes people sprinkle or collect you for a special reason.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Now, do you have any idea of what you could be?
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Round three.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Sometimes people use you as a symbol of sadness or mourning.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: And before Tishab, some people dip part of their meal into you as a reminder of that loss.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: And in some traditional Jewish weddings, there's a custom to place a tiny bit of you on the forehead as a reminder that even in moments of great joy we remember Jerusalem.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Now do you know what you are?
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Are you ready for the reveal?
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Look in the mirror.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: You are ashes.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Mozletove.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Mystery solved.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Did you know not everything leaves ashes when it burned?
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Some materials leave very little, while wood usually leaves quite a bit.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: And did you know ashes can actually help plants grow?
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Wood ashes contain certain minerals like calcium and potassium, and sometimes they're even added to soil to help certain plants.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Did you know that in many Jewish communities people have a custom before Tish Abba'av of dipping their bread or a hard-boiled egg into ashes?
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: And this takes place during a meal called the Suuda Hamafseket, the final meal before the fast, as a way of remembering the destruction of the Betamagdash, the Holy Temple.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Get ready for game time.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Let's play rhyme time.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: I'll say a short poem and I'll leave the last word out for you to fill in.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Listen carefully and use rhyme to help you.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Number one, ashes are tiny and often are grey, they can be carried by the wind far what goes in the blank away.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Number two, though the holy temple was destroyed, we still love the building it was Antisha What Goes in the Blank?
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: But of and finally number three.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Even when things are broken or gone, we hold on to hope and keep moving what goes in the blank on.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: And now it's time for your mystery mirror mission.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Ashes remind us to remember things that happened before.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Draw or write about something important that you never want to forget, and ask a grown-up to send it to Mirror at ThatJewish Moment.com.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: And if you color in the coloring page, please send a picture.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: I'd love to see how yours comes out.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: Until next time.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Keep your minds sharp, detectives.
