- 0:00Speaker 1: We see this big vote. Obviously, both parties voting for
- 0:03Speaker 1: this after Donald Trump knew he was going to lose
- 0:06Speaker 1: and then told people to vote for it. Is this
- 0:08Speaker 1: an inflection point? Do you think? Do you feel like
- 0:11Speaker 1: this is a moment where the Republican Party is starting
- 0:13Speaker 1: to move or is this just a one day sort
- 0:15Speaker 1: of event.
- 0:17Speaker 2: I think it's a pretty big deal that Trump felt
- 0:20Speaker 2: like he had to come out and say that he
- 0:23Speaker 2: was okay with people voting for it because he knew
- 0:25Speaker 2: he was going to lose a lot of people. Because
- 0:26Speaker 2: what he's doing doesn't really make sense right because he's saying,
- 0:29Speaker 2: I support you voting for a law to force me
- 0:33Speaker 2: to do something I don't need a law to do,
- 0:35Speaker 2: which gives away the game, which is his bullying just
- 0:38Speaker 2: didn't seem to work. And people were pretty mad that
- 0:41Speaker 2: he was going after Thomas Massey's like personal life and
- 0:44Speaker 2: trying to buttonhole Lauren Bobert and going after MTG Marjorie
- 0:47Speaker 2: Tayler Green and Trump's been bullying people in a pretty
- 0:52Speaker 2: similar way for a long time, and I don't think
- 0:53Speaker 2: it has the force it once did.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Do you think it changes things? Do you feel like
- 0:58Speaker 1: Republicans are going to.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Feel powered or but do you think you're starting to
- 1:01Speaker 3: see the possibility that Republicans may realize that Trump could
- 1:08Speaker 3: drag them down in the midterms and that after the
- 1:10Speaker 3: midterms he really will be a lame duck and they're
- 1:14Speaker 3: going to have to be on the ballot again, and
- 1:16Speaker 3: you know, in thirty by themselves and there won't be
- 1:18Speaker 3: any Donald Trump. And so you know that calculation may
- 1:21Speaker 3: figure into their political decisions over the next coming months.
- 1:25Speaker 1: In a year, although it seems Tommy, every time we've
- 1:27Speaker 1: thought that that was going to happen, people go the
- 1:30Speaker 1: other direction.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, we January sixth felt like an inflection point too,
- 1:34Speaker 4: and you know, here we are. Look, I do think
- 1:36Speaker 4: it matters that a bunch of Republicans decided to tell
- 1:41Speaker 4: him now on something that was clearly very important to him,
- 1:44Speaker 4: the release of these Epstein files. I would also just
- 1:47Speaker 4: note that like Trump has some tough political sledting ahead
- 1:51Speaker 4: of him. I mean, the economy is not really getting better,
- 1:54Speaker 4: Inflation is not going away. There is this looming problem
- 1:57Speaker 4: of these ACA tax credits buying and people seeing their
- 2:01Speaker 4: healthcare premiums go up seventy five one hundred percent. So
- 2:05Speaker 4: like there's a lot of things he's going to need
- 2:07Speaker 4: to work with Congress to get done that he's kind
- 2:09Speaker 4: of flailing at at the moment that might drop get
- 2:13Speaker 4: its approval rating down further into the thirties.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Should Democrats be concerned about some of this Epstein stuff too,
- 2:18Speaker 1: I mean, we see Larry Summers having to step back
- 2:20Speaker 1: at Harvard. Obviously he was an advisor to Obama and
- 2:24Speaker 1: to Clinton and others. I mean that they could get
- 2:27Speaker 1: caught up in this too.
- 2:29Speaker 3: I think if you did something to get caught up
- 2:31Speaker 3: in it, then it should be out there. Like Republicans
- 2:35Speaker 3: feel like they're playing this like gotcha game with Democrats.
- 2:38Speaker 3: But most of the Democrats I know, and most of
- 2:40Speaker 3: the Democrats I've seen speak about this, are saying, you know,
- 2:44Speaker 3: we want all the information out there, and if it
- 2:47Speaker 3: damages someone because they did something embarrassing or worse, then
- 2:51Speaker 3: so be it. Like if we want transparency, it's got
- 2:53Speaker 3: to be transparency across the spectrum.
- 2:56Speaker 1: In terms of foreign policy, where it's an interesting moment
- 3:00Speaker 1: right now President Trump hinting that there may be a
- 3:03Speaker 1: deal with Russia and Ukraine. If he pulls that off,
- 3:07Speaker 1: does he deserve some credit if he got that deal
- 3:10Speaker 1: done and got a deal done in Gaza.
- 3:11Speaker 4: If you can get a piece deal that both sides
- 3:13Speaker 4: agree to, he definitely gets some credit. I mean, the
- 3:15Speaker 4: reporting I have seen about this deal is it sounds
- 3:19Speaker 4: like something that Trump and his team have cooked up
- 3:22Speaker 4: exclusively with the Russians that they went to then force
- 3:25Speaker 4: On the Ukrainian side, It's a lot like Putin's wish
- 3:27Speaker 4: list going into the Alaska Summit, where basically the Ukrainians
- 3:30Speaker 4: give away twenty percent of their territory, they agree to
- 3:34Speaker 4: make Russian an official language, they agree to downgrade their
- 3:38Speaker 4: military substantially, both in terms of size and the types
- 3:41Speaker 4: of weapons they can have. So it basically sets Ukraine
- 3:44Speaker 4: up to be a sitting duck going forward. And the
- 3:46Speaker 4: broader context here is, as we're debating this plan that
- 3:50Speaker 4: they rolled out today, over in Poland, the polls are
- 3:53Speaker 4: accusing the Russians of blowing up a railway line that
- 3:57Speaker 4: was being used to resupply the Ukrainian military. So as
- 4:00Speaker 4: Trump is trying to cut this deal that gives Putin
- 4:02Speaker 4: everything he wants, the Russians are not only bombing Ukraine
- 4:06Speaker 4: every single night, but they're also going after NATO allies,
- 4:08Speaker 4: So I don't think it's a done deal yet.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Yeah. And meanwhile, John, we see the President dining with
- 4:16Speaker 1: the Saudi crown Prince and I don't like to use
- 4:21Speaker 1: the word oligarchy, but this certainly felt like the oligarchy,
- 4:25Speaker 1: with every major business leader, the richest people in America
- 4:28Speaker 1: all there.
- 4:30Speaker 2: We have a lot of low moments of the presidency
- 4:33Speaker 2: with Trump. It was a low moment to have the
- 4:36Speaker 2: red carpet ruled out for Putin and then have an
- 4:40Speaker 2: authoritarian received no questions from a democratic press. Basically, have
- 4:45Speaker 2: Donald Trump run cover for a Russian dictator, and then
- 4:48Speaker 2: you have a very reasonable and tough question, an earned
- 4:53Speaker 2: question at MBS about Jamal Kashogi, and Trump intercedes to
- 4:59Speaker 2: say some despicable uh uh, it's like morally depraved, uh,
- 5:05Speaker 2: equivocating on a murder by a state uh that we've
- 5:09Speaker 2: ever seen in the Oval office to kind of run
- 5:11Speaker 2: cover for this guy because he's.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Said that the CIA says he knew and was helped
- 5:15Speaker 1: direct he and Bess against the CIA.
- 5:18Speaker 2: And he sits there with his hands in his lap,
- 5:20Speaker 2: looking down while Trump protects him like like he's there
- 5:23Speaker 2: to run cover. I don't know if we were one,
- 5:26Speaker 2: all right, Trump says it and UH, and it's a
- 5:31Speaker 2: one or two day story. It's if any other era
- 5:34Speaker 2: would be like a signal moment in that administration, and
- 5:37Speaker 2: it's like abandonment of American values. But yes, he has
- 5:41Speaker 2: a relationship with UH, the Saudis that is both financial
- 5:45Speaker 2: and ego, and he puts that above the basic democratic values,
- 5:50Speaker 2: human values, American priorities. And we see that all the time,
- 5:54Speaker 2: including when you have a collection of UH billionaires and
- 5:57Speaker 2: wealthy backers all in one room backslapping with the Saudis.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Remember in twenty eighteen, he came to the US for
- 6:03Speaker 4: three weeks and he was treated like a king everywhere
- 6:06Speaker 4: in Hollywood and Silicon Valley in Washington. He went up
- 6:08Speaker 4: to MIT in Harvard. A few months later, he authorized
- 6:13Speaker 4: or ordered the execution of Jamal Kushogi, this journalist who
- 6:16Speaker 4: they butchered literally in the consulate in Istanbul. For about
- 6:20Speaker 4: a year, maybe two years, the business.
- 6:22Speaker 3: Community backed off a bit.
- 6:24Speaker 4: You know, they had this conference called the Dabos and
- 6:25Speaker 4: the Desert Concerts conference in Saudi Arabia. Business is sent
- 6:29Speaker 4: there like Tier two guy. Now they're fully back, and frankly,
- 6:33Speaker 4: I blame the Bide administration for that because Joe Biden,
- 6:36Speaker 4: when he needed oil prices to go down, went over
- 6:38Speaker 4: to Saudi Arabia gave MBS the fifth bump.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Yeah, we're not going to shake your hand, but we're
- 6:41Speaker 1: going to run.
- 6:42Speaker 4: It to do one of these as if that makes
- 6:43Speaker 4: it any better. In fact, it looked way way worse.
- 6:45Speaker 4: But then Donald Trump, he just doesn't care. And I
- 6:47Speaker 4: think the story that I read that mattered most to
- 6:50Speaker 4: me this week in terms of understanding the US Saudi
- 6:52Speaker 4: relationship was one of the Financial Times on Monday about
- 6:55Speaker 4: a new resort the Trump organization is planning with the Saudis,
- 7:00Speaker 4: the Saudi linked businesses in the Maldives, where they're creating
- 7:03Speaker 4: like an eighty unit luxury resort resort that is somehow
- 7:07Speaker 4: based on the blockchain. You can like buy fractal share.
- 7:09Speaker 4: It's the most nonsensical marketing.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Get a little gorilla, got one of those digital gorillas
- 7:14Speaker 2: that everybody that are awesome, Yes, that I love.
- 7:16Speaker 4: And so Trump's you know, Trump was running interference for
- 7:19Speaker 4: MBS because he just knows MBS can make him a
- 7:22Speaker 4: lot of money. And that's why all those business leaders
- 7:24Speaker 4: were there too,
