- 0:10it's always a joy to open God's word with you and so would you
- 0:13meet me in the Gospel According to Mark in chapter chapter one,
- 0:19I know we're still early in this book but I cannot help, but feel
- 0:24When studying this gospel and teaching it that we're treading
- 0:29on Holy Ground. when speaking about Christ, as much as we have
- 0:36Liberty in him there's there's this the sense of reverence
- 0:42there is no one like him and and because of that we need God's
- 0:47help and understanding him and how we communicate him and speak
- 0:52of him. The man something from us that
- 0:54no other person demands and so if you're there in Mark 1 Meet
- 1:00me in verse and verse 9. It says, in those days, Jesus
- 1:06from Nazareth, rather, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee
- 1:12and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
- 1:15And when he came up out of the water immediately, he saw the
- 1:19heavens being torn open and the spirit descending on him, like a
- 1:24dove. And the voice Came From Heaven.
- 1:28You are my beloved Son with you. I am.
- 1:34Well pleased. What we pray again.
- 1:44Help us with this, help us see the awesome significance of the
- 1:50baptism of Jesus Lori. Pray, that the spirit of God
- 1:58would Open the Eyes of each Heart In This Place.
- 2:02Lord breakthrough, familiarity breakthrough.
- 2:06All distraction And Lord win our devotion.
- 2:12And draw out fresh affection for the person of Jesus Christ.
- 2:19Lord, we pray that you would indeed empower the ministry of
- 2:24the word this afternoon and that we would sense something of the
- 2:29radiating glory of God in Christ Jesus.
- 2:34Bring us to our knees. Wipe away, every tear restore
- 2:40the joy of your salvation. We Need You O Lord.
- 2:44For we are we are so able to become hardened in light of
- 2:48these truths. So able to become indifferent
- 2:51but Lord, rescue us again, rescue us, Lord and receive from
- 2:56us. What is your do?
- 2:59Supreme love. Adoration and devotion.
- 3:04We ask these things in Jesus name, amen. a time together last
- 3:09week, hopefully Provided some clarity.
- 3:14And understanding the meaning of the baptism of this wild Prophet
- 3:18named John John, the baptizer. And the main idea behind John's
- 3:23baptism baptism, is that it was a means to dismantle this false
- 3:28confidence that the Jewish people had in their Heritage and
- 3:32their ethnicity, and their culture and their race.
- 3:36This was a community that believed wholeheartedly that
- 3:39because they had a certain ancestry that they had automatic
- 3:43access into the kingdom of God, that they were saved based on
- 3:47that. And here comes John, the son of
- 3:50a priest. After 400 years of silence and
- 3:53begins to Proclaim repent. Repent, you juice and be
- 3:58baptized. You cannot depend upon your
- 4:01culture, you cannot depend upon your history.
- 4:03You must make an individual commitment to realizing your
- 4:07need for the mercy of God. You must recognize that your
- 4:11culture doesn't erase your sin. Only God can do that.
- 4:16And so, would you join with me in this water?
- 4:19And would you make a declaration to your people?
- 4:21And before God, that you need him?
- 4:24Because the kingdom of God is at hand.
- 4:26And so we understand that that is the emphasis of John's,
- 4:29baptism it clarifies. The emphasis of the baptism that
- 4:32you did right in the name of Jesus, where you identified with
- 4:36his death, I'm dying with Christ.
- 4:39My salvation is because of Christ and you clothed yourself
- 4:43in him by faith. But that water envelops you as a
- 4:48way of signifying your burial and your Resurrection in his
- 4:51name. But with this fresh Insight in
- 4:54our hearts, right? With this fresh insight, about
- 4:57what? John's baptism, baptism was all
- 4:59about. We come now to a new, A new
- 5:03challenge, A new challenge in trying to understand, John's
- 5:07baptism. And the challenge is. as we try
- 5:12to interpret it is that this baptism for Sinners, this
- 5:16baptism that called those who realize their need to repent and
- 5:19confess their sins was something that the Lord Jesus Christ
- 5:23himself participated in how can it be And so significant is this
- 5:31that we must understand it. It may seem intimidating to
- 5:35engage with but as we dig and as we discover why Jesus did this,
- 5:40or I pray that you would have another reason to give him glory
- 5:43and worship. And so we understand that Jesus
- 5:48was in fact, baptized by this man who baptized people for them
- 5:52to repent and in seeking to understand the Monumental moment
- 5:57that this was in Jesus life and Ministry this afternoon you and
- 6:01I will only answer to questions to questions.
- 6:04And the first one was this, why is it that Jesus was baptized by
- 6:08John and the second one will be what happened.
- 6:13When the Lord Jesus Christ was Bye.
- 6:16Bye. John.
- 6:18You may be surprised to understand that the first answer
- 6:21to that first question, why why did he come to this point?
- 6:26Why did he come to the shore of the Jordan to experience this to
- 6:32experience this campaign that was called to humble and
- 6:36identify? Sinners, how can it be?
- 6:38And I present to you the first reason and it is to affirm the
- 6:42deity of Jesus Christ. When you read verse 9, I'm sure
- 6:48the first question that comes to mind is why why is the sinless
- 6:51Spotless savior? Who is God In the Flesh?
- 6:53Responding to this call for Sinners to Humble themselves and
- 6:58many who vehemently deny the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ
- 7:02will come to a verse like this as some kind of a proof text
- 7:05that he was not God, that he did not share in the father's
- 7:08nature. He was a good man but he was a
- 7:10man, still a man who shared Adam sinned.
- 7:15And the very same place, where people would try to repudiate
- 7:19the character, the perfect nature of Jesus Christ is the
- 7:22very same occasion where God actually wants to affirm his
- 7:27Perfection. How, how can it be?
- 7:30How do you get that out of this? And the only way that you can
- 7:33get it is when you see the snapshot taken by the other
- 7:36gospel writer Matthew, And in Matthews telling Matthew by the
- 7:43spirit, knows the questions that we would come, that would come
- 7:46through this text and desires to answer it and this is how he
- 7:50answers it. But you have to go there and
- 7:52Matthew chapter 3 and verse 13. Would you know that the answer?
- 8:01To this question is in the response of John.
- 8:06And his reaction when he learns that Jesus desires to be
- 8:09baptized by him, Matthew 313. Then Jesus Came From Galilee to
- 8:14the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.
- 8:18John would have prevented him saying.
- 8:21I need to be baptized by you and do you come to me?
- 8:26This is nothing short of incredible.
- 8:29This Prophet who called every man, every woman, every
- 8:32politician, every ruler, even a religious one to repent and be
- 8:38baptized has come now to a point where he is faced with a Jew
- 8:42that occupies a category that no one else shares a Jew Flesh and
- 8:47Blood who does not require to respond to John's baptism?
- 8:51How can it be? Well, it's very simple.
- 8:55John here is not just trying to be nice.
- 8:56He's not trying to just be humble, he's not.
- 8:59Acting Jesus as someone who might be slightly more Superior
- 9:03than him by saying. You know, you should actually do
- 9:05this for me. No, John here is highlighting
- 9:08that this Jesus who is from Nazareth, does not need to
- 9:12undergo, his Heavenly commission, baptism because
- 9:16there is nothing that Jesus needs to repent of John bearing
- 9:24witness to the sinlessness of Jesus.
- 9:27The deity of Jesus is not only found in that famous statement,
- 9:32Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
- 9:35It is also recognized in his refusal to baptize him.
- 9:40This does not apply to you. This is not something that you
- 9:44need. You are two worthy for this and
- 9:48so he protests And he calls Christ to be at Bay, you do not
- 9:55need to join me in this. And what's so amazing is when
- 9:58you think about the crowds on that day, because Luke tells us
- 10:01there was a multitude on that site when Jesus was baptized,
- 10:04and what is site in must have been that for the first time in
- 10:07John's short Ministry, but nationally powerful Ministry
- 10:12that touch the entire people for the first time.
- 10:16There is a man who doesn't need to go on under the water.
- 10:20And the Waters of repentance, he doesn't need to be immersed
- 10:23because this man who asked to be immersed was to worthy for it.
- 10:28Therefore, even before looking at the words of Jesus and his
- 10:31reasoning, why he must be baptized, we have John the
- 10:35baptizer who is telling us that whatever is about to take place
- 10:41is not because it is for the remission for sins.
- 10:46And before moving on, I would like to make a comment about
- 10:48John's response here to Jesus request, it's a practical thing.
- 10:52It's very, very important to realize because John was a
- 10:55unique preacher, he was a new preacher because he was a
- 10:58confrontational preacher. He was one, who is disturbing
- 11:01the consciousness of men who are comfortable in their
- 11:03Disobedience. He was somebody that rumbled,
- 11:06the message of repentance and he would even call out specific
- 11:10sins that he knew that some of his audience members were
- 11:14harboring and living in. He was indeed like Elijah and
- 11:19some admired John's approach some really like this
- 11:22fire-breathing kind of preaching and so they long to emulate it
- 11:24themselves with the hopes that they would see the same fruit
- 11:29and they want to confront false teachers in such a bold way.
- 11:31And they want to call out hypocrisy in Christendom and God
- 11:35can use that. And I am of those who believes
- 11:37that, we need a Revival of such preaching to such an extent.
- 11:42But what God can use in that can actually be counterproductive if
- 11:46it is done in the wrong attitude, hear me if you're a
- 11:48person who loves truth and not just loves choose, but desires
- 11:52to Proclaim it uncompromisingly. Notice what John says to Jesus.
- 11:58He says I need to be baptized by you.
- 12:03This is not just his attempt to try to elevate Christ.
- 12:06This is also a declaration of his own inferiority.
- 12:10I need to be baptized by you. I love that.
- 12:14And the reason why I so love it is because this man this
- 12:17preacher who looked at crowds, he says you're a bunch of
- 12:22snakes, you know that And your Sinners and you need to repent
- 12:26in the wrath of God is coming upon you.
- 12:28That same man realized that he was a sinner himself.
- 12:34This Minister who is filled with the Holy Spirit in his mother's
- 12:38womb, still saw the need to be baptized in the Holy Spirit by
- 12:45Jesus Christ. I need to be baptized by you.
- 12:51I need that inward cleansing. That only you can offer.
- 12:56Nothing can be more ineffective than someone calling people to
- 13:00righteousness in a self-righteous spirit.
- 13:04John was no such man. Even with this man's hard words,
- 13:09it could be received because people could perceive as man's
- 13:12humble. This man has broken.
- 13:15This man is aware of his own. His own need for this Christ
- 13:19that he speaks of for repentance that he's calling us to.
- 13:24And I think that is very important because the gospel
- 13:27will only sound sweeter when it rings from a vessel who realizes
- 13:30his own need for it. I think I'm speaking to a people
- 13:36who love the truth and some of you go beyond that you want to
- 13:39tell people about this truth. So please hear what I have to
- 13:42say. that even something as harsh as rebuke can be received,
- 13:47well, by those who would recognize in you and me, a
- 13:51person who is fully convinced that they need the mercy of God
- 13:54themselves, There's something in the tone.
- 13:58There's something in the approach.
- 13:59There's something in the eyes that even the prophetic like
- 14:02Ministry. Can be embraced because people
- 14:06see a man who's preaching about something that he needs himself.
- 14:13And if we love truth and want to declare truth, then would you
- 14:17and I be a people who can prove to other people that we are just
- 14:22as much of a sinner as they are. And we need that message.
- 14:27We need to understand that the more and more.
- 14:29We see the darkness in the world.
- 14:31Do you really believe? Do you really believe in your
- 14:34heart that the potential of your own wickedness can be that of
- 14:38what we see today apart from Christ?
- 14:42The answer should be yes, apart from the intervening grace of
- 14:46God. You and I can be among those who
- 14:49think the same way as those people think, and March in the
- 14:52same way and present their crazy ideas in the same way.
- 14:56Blessed, be the name of the Lord that he has saved us.
- 15:00And let the world hear it, let the world see it.
- 15:03Let them perceive like they perceive in John, a man of great
- 15:06humility, who preached a truth that he himself needed Jesus in
- 15:11his baptism. Baptized by John does not
- 15:15contradict the concept of his deity and actually affirms.
- 15:18It it was a very platform in which the Lamb of God was seen
- 15:23and recognized by profit for his Purity and Holiness.
- 15:28But more than that. Why was Jesus Christ?
- 15:31Baptized by John not just. So his DD could be affirmed but
- 15:35that he can identify with sinners.
- 15:38Think about it. If John's reaction is not
- 15:41sufficient to satisfy the skeptic than the words of Jesus
- 15:45in response to John's protest should be the final nail in the
- 15:49coffin. Look What the Lord says in verse
- 15:5115 and Matthew 3, but Jesus answered him.
- 15:56Let it be. So now for thus, it is fitting
- 15:59for us to fulfill all righteousness.
- 16:03The phrase to fulfill. All righteousness, is the
- 16:08heartbeat of Christ decision to do this and it begs the
- 16:12question. If Jesus did not share the
- 16:16father's nature. If Jesus is not, in fact, God In
- 16:19the Flesh, then wouldn't this be the perfect opportunity for him
- 16:24to say something along the lines of let it be?
- 16:26So, now, for thus, it is fitting for my sins to be cleansed and
- 16:32for me to repent. And for me to be an example to
- 16:37these Jews that I'm like them. And I, and I must also receive
- 16:41the mercy of God and I confess it.
- 16:44That would have been the perfect chance, but the obvious answer
- 16:47is it doesn't happen because he doesn't need it.
- 16:50So, why is he saying to fulfill all righteousness?
- 16:54Well, you and I can understand that.
- 16:56That phrase in the following way to fulfill.
- 17:00All righteousness is to fulfill all the requirements of God to
- 17:05fulfill. All righteousness is simply to
- 17:07fulfill all the righteous requirements and decrees and
- 17:11demands that God has made. And that's exactly what Jesus is
- 17:15doing. Because the scriptures are
- 17:17clear, that John's baptism was authorized by God.
- 17:22It was something that heaven mandated, it had a divine
- 17:26origin. John didn't just wake up in the
- 17:28wilderness one day because I think I should have baptized
- 17:30some people, God told them to do it.
- 17:34And when we understand it, that way, when we couple it with the
- 17:37understanding of Jesus purpose on the earth to fulfill all
- 17:41that, the father had told him to do to walk in perfect obedience,
- 17:44then he has perfectly obeying by doing what submitting to what
- 17:49God had ordained namely. John's baptism being surrendered
- 17:52to When Jesus is coming to John's baptism, what Jesus is
- 17:58actually doing is obeying, the father, he's obeying God.
- 18:03In other words, think of it this way.
- 18:04If John's baptism was commissioned by God and Jesus,
- 18:08our lord, the Son of God seeks to obey God, then he will gladly
- 18:14respond to the mandate to join. John's baptism.
- 18:19You know why? That's important. here's why
- 18:22it's important, because the Lord Jesus, by doing this is securing
- 18:26The Obedience that you and I need To stand right before.
- 18:30God The Lord Jesus here. Since our faith in him is a
- 18:36transfer of our Disobedience. For his obedience is in a sense
- 18:41walking out our obedience on our behalf. he's identifying with
- 18:46Sinners, he is Telling us through this.
- 18:52I'm in your place I'm in your place.
- 18:56Think about it this way, when you have entered into the Waters
- 19:00of baptism in Jesus name, what are you doing there?
- 19:02I hope. You know, I hope you did know
- 19:04and if you don't know, let me remind you.
- 19:06You identified with Christ. I am declaring that.
- 19:10I am. I'm linking myself to this
- 19:12reality and I'm symbolically showing it through this dramatic
- 19:16ordinance. I'm Goin In bear with Coming up
- 19:20resurrected with Christ you going into that water is
- 19:23identifying with Christ's work. Now, let's look at and the
- 19:28flipside Jesus going into the water.
- 19:32Though without sin though. Perfect is identifying with you.
- 19:38And he is now coming to this point in the beginning of his
- 19:41ministry. To say I am standing in the
- 19:44place of a fractured humanity. And in this moment I am
- 19:50foreshadowing. What I will do on the cross.
- 19:53In this moment, I'm saying, I will die, I will be buried and I
- 19:58will come to life again. So very clear that we see that
- 20:03Christ heartbeat is to satisfy God's righteous righteous decree
- 20:07and to publicly identify with Sinners as their substitute, I
- 20:13worship the Lord for that. What an incredible sight?
- 20:18and if someone still can't see the distinction, Of Jesus
- 20:23baptism through John's reluctance and Jesus own
- 20:27explanation for why he's doing it.
- 20:30Then we have another person who is testifying in this.
- 20:34God, the Father himself who audibly speaks from heaven and
- 20:37says this is my beloved Son in whom I am.
- 20:40Well pleased and whom I am. Well pleased, it was audible.
- 20:45It was there. It was a manifestation.
- 20:48And why did that happen? Well, I mean that statement
- 20:51means so much but at least And one thing he's telling all those
- 20:55people who were there that day, my son is going into that water.
- 20:59Not for the same reason why you will go into that water.
- 21:02I'm pleased with him. I am.
- 21:05Well, pleased with him sinless. My beloved Son, sharing my
- 21:11nature. Perfect in my sight.
- 21:16And so we see that he is identifying with sinners.
- 21:20And that is something that we can Rejoice inning and close and
- 21:23and just worship over this table.
- 21:26But I love the thought that as much as the perfect Obedience of
- 21:30Jesus was primary lived out so that mankind can have the the
- 21:36righteous representative for them.
- 21:39Jesus also did all that he did as an example.
- 21:46The Lord Jesus Christ humbled himself to come into those
- 21:51Waters. Do you know why you just heard
- 21:53it? Because God demanded it.
- 21:57And what I think is so amazing is that John tried to prevent
- 22:00Jesus from being baptized. Not knowing at this moment that
- 22:05he was intending to please the father.
- 22:09Jesus In This Moment, possessed a revelation that John did not
- 22:13have. I have a Clarity of what this is
- 22:15all about and because I've received Clarity, I have this
- 22:18Clarity. There is an urgency for me to
- 22:21satisfy what God demands of me. and with that clarity, And with
- 22:28that urgency Jesus provides an example.
- 22:30Here's why I'm bringing this up because the attitude of the
- 22:33Saviour, unfortunately stands in such contrast to the attitude of
- 22:37many of his followers. And how they communicate their
- 22:41obedience to God especially in even with water baptism.
- 22:47The one in the name that is greater than John's by the way.
- 22:51How many are convinced that what Jesus said about being baptized
- 22:55in his name, the name of the father Son and the Holy Spirit
- 22:57is, in fact, an ordinance for those who claim faith in him and
- 23:00yet at the same time, treat such a thing as though it is a
- 23:05suggestion as though it is something non-essential as
- 23:08though it is. A thing that can be delayed
- 23:09based on convenience. I'm not just talking about water
- 23:13about this. I'm talking about anything that
- 23:15God had decreed clearly in his word.
- 23:18You do not see this in Jesus, even in the beginning of his
- 23:21ministry, he sets the tone of his desire to obey the father.
- 23:27By doing this. And if you are one who feels
- 23:30hesitation in the face of obedience, would you look to
- 23:34your master? Would you look to him as your
- 23:37example and see that he was determined to obey the father's
- 23:42will. And it doesn't matter what kind
- 23:43of protest came or what kind of Praise came even if it came from
- 23:47a great man. Like John, I must obey the
- 23:51father and no one will stop me. What A Savior. one example, if
- 24:00the father said it, And no man can stop me from doing it.
- 24:06And so we see here that Jesus is giving us practical Practical
- 24:11instruction is there more practical instruction in the
- 24:13baptism of Jesus? I believe so, but it's only when
- 24:16you marry it with the different accounts because Luke tells us
- 24:20that Jesus did something else while he stood in those Waters
- 24:24that, no other gospel writer tells us and you would see it if
- 24:28you go there and Luke 321, look what Luke tells us that no other
- 24:32gospel writer tells us And Luke 321. now, when all the people
- 24:41were baptized, So there is more baptisms that day.
- 24:46And when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, And
- 24:54was praying, the heavens were opened.
- 24:59Luke. Gives us a precious sight of
- 25:02Jesus on that, on that day, in that scene, he told us that
- 25:08Jesus was praying during his baptism.
- 25:11And no wonder when you go to Luke, you'll see that he has a
- 25:14desire to give a portrait of Jesus.
- 25:17Praying he mentions Jesus praying more than any gospel
- 25:20writer and it's in that gospel account even where you have the
- 25:24Revelation that Jesus is close disciples were so intrigued
- 25:29about some aspect of Christ Ministries.
- 25:31And it was his prayer life. It is in that place where you
- 25:36see where the disciples asked directly something that they
- 25:39have not asked anything else about.
- 25:41And that is, would you teach us to what prey would you teach us
- 25:47to pray the same way? John taught his disciples.
- 25:51You do not see the disciples asking for anything else to be
- 25:54taught directly to them, except for prayer.
- 25:58How wonder what they saw? I wonder if it was the early
- 26:01mornings when they woke up and Jesus was not The campsite
- 26:05because he was some somewhere deep in the bushes.
- 26:08Communing with the father, I wonder if it was the way he
- 26:12prayed, Hebrews tells us that he prayed with reverence.
- 26:17I wonder if it was the Liberty that he had and calling
- 26:20Godfather, whatever it was, it's so move.
- 26:23The disciples that they said, oh, would you teach us to pray?
- 26:28And as we know Jesus, used that opportunity to give what we know
- 26:31as the Lord's Prayer and it's not so that we just pair it
- 26:34exactly what Jesus said but it gives us a formula to frame the
- 26:38way we commune with God. What to include what we should
- 26:42be asking for how we should speak to him.
- 26:45But, can I challenge you further?
- 26:47Don't just look to the Lord's Prayer, as an example of how to
- 26:50cultivate a prayer life. Look at how he prayed.
- 26:55Look at when he prayed. and one of the things I see in Jesus
- 27:01prayer life, is that he praised here during his baptism and what
- 27:07I learn as I desire to be like him, is that there is The
- 27:13Liberty. For my prayers to be legitimate.
- 27:18In any place. At any time.
- 27:23During any activity. In other words we see here that
- 27:28as Jesus is standing in the presence of a multitude and as
- 27:30Jesus is undergoing, a certain thing, he is still able to
- 27:35commune with the father You know what that means.
- 27:41That means that you don't have to go to a specific place and
- 27:45get on your knees and Beyond a certain angle for the reception
- 27:49to be right for God to give you his ear.
- 27:53What I see in Jesus is that, while I'm in my car, I can pray
- 27:58and he hears me. Well, I'm at the doctor's
- 28:01waiting in that room and needing piece.
- 28:05I can pray that while I am in a business meeting, not knowing
- 28:10how to bring a solution to this, I can pray for wisdom.
- 28:15And the father, will he while I clean?
- 28:17I can turn that that scene into a worship center and praise him.
- 28:23And pray him. And this is what Jesus is
- 28:25showing here that in any Arena that with any activity I can do
- 28:31what Paul says that we should do and that is pray without ceasing
- 28:36to walk in a way in which I'm continually in communion with
- 28:39the Lord. Inviting him.
- 28:41In All Things, bringing all things to him.
- 28:43This is what we say. Do we not as evangelicals, we
- 28:47have a personal relationship with the lord.
- 28:49Well, who's more personal to the father than Christ and here's
- 28:52Christ exam. Find it while he's being
- 28:54baptized. He speaking to the father.
- 28:59Would you do the same? Do you feel a legalistic
- 29:03limitation? That you cannot have that
- 29:07freedom with your father. Look to Christ.
- 29:11He is my example and yours. And we have access to the
- 29:14heavenly father And he will hear us.
- 29:19And this idea of Jesus, praying is a perfect transition, because
- 29:22you heard three reasons, brief reasons to why Jesus was
- 29:25baptized to affirm his deity to identify with Sinners, and to,
- 29:30also be our example, to a certain extent.
- 29:33But now we come to the second main question before we break
- 29:36bread and that is not why the Lord Jesus were baptized.
- 29:39But what happened when the Lord Jesus was baptized and that is
- 29:43an important question. Because two things happened and
- 29:48they were Supernatural one was visible.
- 29:51One was audible the visible has to do with the person of the
- 29:54Holy Spirit. The Audible has to deal with the
- 29:56father and what we see in verse 10 is our Focus for the rest of
- 30:01the message. And when he came up of Mark 110,
- 30:05and when he came up out of the water immediately, he saw the
- 30:08heavens being torn open and the spirit descending on him, like a
- 30:13dove. I don't know about you but in
- 30:17answering the main question I have more questions.
- 30:20What happened when the Lord Jesus was baptized while I read
- 30:22it in verse 10 and I think to myself, well, why is that
- 30:26happening? Why is the holy spirit
- 30:32descending Upon Jesus? Now and for what purpose?
- 30:39There is no explicit statement that seeks to give us.
- 30:45A look into the relationship with the Holy Spirit and the
- 30:49Lord Jesus. Before his commencement into the
- 30:54ministry. Yes, he was there during the
- 30:57Incarnation but between those silent years.
- 31:00We don't have any Clear Window into how it is at the Holy
- 31:03Spirit related to Jesus being in the flesh walking in this world
- 31:08until we come to this moment and we see that it is so clear that
- 31:13he descends upon him, and John tells us that he remains on
- 31:17Jesus. And when you look at that, you
- 31:20have to be careful because that does not diminish.
- 31:22The deity of Jesus Christ. Why this is brought up, is in
- 31:26fact to emphasize on the humanity of Jesus Christ.
- 31:31We believe Jesus Christ, fully God, fully man.
- 31:34Truly got truly, man. And as we come to this moment,
- 31:37we see that the humanness of Jesus, the essence of his
- 31:41Humanity was, in fact, true. He did not come to this earth.
- 31:45Taking on an earth suit. Only to appear as He was human.
- 31:50No, he really came in the flesh and In the Flesh, he knew real
- 31:54human limitations. He knew real human temptations,
- 31:58though, he did not share in the corrupt nature that Adam
- 32:02introduced to the human race. And so when you and I look at
- 32:05this, we have to consider that the reality of the human nature
- 32:09of Jesus is on Full display. Why?
- 32:13Because as a man by being anointed by the Holy Spirit, he
- 32:18is showing that He is in need in his humility.
- 32:22In humbling himself. He is in need of the, of the
- 32:26power of the spirit, of the guidance of the spirit of the
- 32:31anointing of the Holy Spirit. This is just as much as a
- 32:35declaration of Christ, humility, as him going to the cross and
- 32:41submitting to the father's will. He is also submitting to the
- 32:45holy spirit's influence as a man and the scriptures are so clear.
- 32:51They tell us that in order for for us to honor the humanity of
- 32:55Jesus. We see here that the source of
- 32:58his divine power, when he was doing all those Supernatural
- 33:01Works throughout his ministry. Was supplied by the third person
- 33:05of the trinity. This is Jesus showing that he
- 33:08was truly a man being closed by the power of the holy spirit
- 33:13that there's not assault his deity.
- 33:15All that does is highlight the sincerity of his humanity and if
- 33:20you want a verse to confirm what I'm saying, Peter preached the
- 33:23Cornelius household and he made it so obvious that you cannot
- 33:26debate it unless you really want to deny the truth of the word of
- 33:30God, if you take notes, take this reference down and acts
- 33:3410:37 a 38. He's Preaching and Peter says,
- 33:38you yourselves know what happened?
- 33:40You yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea
- 33:42beginning From Galilee that after the baptism that John
- 33:46proclaimed. Here's the sequence after the
- 33:48baptism that John proclaimed verse 38 how God anointed Jesus
- 33:53of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power to do what he
- 33:59went about doing good, and healing all who were oppressed
- 34:01by the devil for God was with him.
- 34:06For God was with them. Well, I thought he was God and
- 34:08are you saying that God wasn't with him before the Holy Spirit?
- 34:11Know there is a unique anointing that took place in that moment
- 34:16for the sole purpose of a Ministry being fulfilled, it
- 34:19would be Blasphemous to say that he was not in connection to God
- 34:23or that he was not God or some crazy.
- 34:25People would say that it was at this time, Jesus was born again.
- 34:30It was solely a clothing of power from on high in a way that
- 34:34no other man has known unmeasured unmeasured power so
- 34:39that he can fulfill what prophets have told us.
- 34:42What happened when the Messiah would come.
- 34:45Jesus was clothed with power but let us consider the manner in
- 34:49which the Holy Spirit enters into the scene and comes upon
- 34:51Christ. You know what Mark says,
- 34:53something that looked this and say something that Matthew
- 34:55doesn't say and has to do. With the entrance.
- 35:00Go back to Mark and look what he says in verse 10 of chapter one.
- 35:05What happened to the heavens when the Holy Spirit came?
- 35:09Torn open. Torn open.
- 35:14That is a dramatic word that is almost a Vine word.
- 35:19It means to rip something. It's a very same word that Mark
- 35:23uses when he describes what happened to that veil in the
- 35:27temple, how it was torn from top to bottom.
- 35:31And yet we see here that in the beginning of Jesus ministry, not
- 35:35just at the end, there is a tearing of the heavens for the
- 35:39Holy Spirit to come down. Not As a dove.
- 35:44So, the idea now is a white bird with an olive branch.
- 35:47In the mouth has to be erased. That's not how the Holy Spirit
- 35:52showed himself like a dove, not as a dove.
- 35:55You didn't come like a bird. I know it's going to ruin your
- 35:58painting at home. Like a dove with certain
- 36:03qualities. That we would see in that unique
- 36:07creature. But what's so amazing here is,
- 36:10is that Mark for some reason, finds it so important.
- 36:13It's obvious because the holy spirit is writing through him
- 36:16that the sky above on that day was ripped.
- 36:23Why does it matter? I'm sure different reasons but
- 36:26may I present you one option and it is not in this moment.
- 36:30God answered a prayer and it wasn't the prayer of Jesus.
- 36:33Only that he answered, Jesus was praying in this moment.
- 36:37And I believe that what he was praying for his, what he
- 36:39received for the anointing of the Holy Spirit to come upon
- 36:41him, but there was another prayer that was prayed there was
- 36:46another appeal, another cry, many many years before this time
- 36:50that I believe was answered at this scene. it was a prayer
- 36:55given by a man who is used by God to give many many, many many
- 36:58prophecies about the very Messiah that we are speaking
- 37:01about Isaiah Isaiah, the prophet at one point in his ministry
- 37:08comes before God and such a beautifully written prophetic
- 37:12prayer because the nation of Israel have come to a point of
- 37:16such destitution to such a degree that even the enemies of
- 37:20God trampled upon the sanctuary of God.
- 37:23They just brought the house of God to rubble.
- 37:26And Isaiah was so stirred by this because on top of that,
- 37:30there seems to be this long and extended Silence from God.
- 37:35He seems to not to not intervene, he seems to not come
- 37:38and rescue. His people to the point where
- 37:41Isaiah's concerned that the nation are saying, this is
- 37:44people even have a god. Who rescues them, who hears
- 37:48them, who saves them? And with all of that, in his
- 37:52heart, can. All of that bubbling in the
- 37:54hearts of the remnant of the people of Israel.
- 37:56Isaiah comes to a point where he makes this desperate cry.
- 38:00And the cries and Isaiah 64 verse 1.
- 38:05Oh, that you would Rend the heavens.
- 38:12And come down. That the mountains might Quaker
- 38:18your presence. Has been fire Kindles Brushwood.
- 38:24And the fire causes water to boil.
- 38:27To make your name known to your adversaries.
- 38:31And that the nation's might tremble at your presence.
- 38:36Oh, that you would Rend. The heavens and come down.
- 38:45God answered, Isaiah's prayer. 700 years later, He did run the
- 38:51heavens and he did come down, but who was it that entered into
- 38:55and to our world. Who is it?
- 38:57That descended the person of the Holy Spirit telling me what holy
- 39:01spirit is God. Holy spirit is the same Yahweh.
- 39:07That Isaiah's is appealing to. Come down and God hears that
- 39:13prayer and fulfills it in the messiah's ministry and he does
- 39:16come down. He comes down.
- 39:18Yes, in the person of Jesus Christ, but here ends the
- 39:20heavens and he comes down in the person of the Holy Spirit.
- 39:26And as much as he has fulfilled, this prophetic prayer.
- 39:30I believe that he did not answer it and the exact same way that
- 39:34Isaiah had desired. Because when the heavens were
- 39:38rent and God did come down, there was no quaking.
- 39:44There was no shaking. There was no sign I like
- 39:48symptoms. The Nations did not tremble at
- 39:53the presence of God. No, instead, when God came down
- 39:59after rending the heavens he did so in such Majestic gentleness.
- 40:05He comes down with such an Elegance.
- 40:07He comes down with such a tenderness and softness, a
- 40:11delicacy and he approaches the scene not with judgment crashing
- 40:17through. But with divine blessing
- 40:21instead. Forgot to tear open the sky with
- 40:26such Force. You would think in anticipate
- 40:31that you are going to see what they saw on Sinai, fire smoke,
- 40:36quaking fear. And instead what you do see Is
- 40:43Grace. Softness.
- 40:49Gentleness. Meaning what the yes.
- 40:54The force was still there in the heavens being rent, but that
- 40:57forces only. Declaring something about.
- 41:03The eager desire of God to break through into our world, as one
- 41:07would break into a sealed room to try to save a dying man.
- 41:13That Sky splitting moment is to show.
- 41:17Yes, and almost a forceful zealous way, but not to pour out
- 41:21judgment but to come and to save, man.
- 41:27That is what it is saying. And there is a time where the
- 41:33sky will be opened again. But when the sky will be open
- 41:38again, you're not going to see a dove coming down.
- 41:41You're not going to see something like a dove coming
- 41:43down. You're going to see a man on a
- 41:45white horse. And that will be more closely to
- 41:50what Isaiah was asking for. But between now and then the
- 41:59heavens have been torn open. And the openness of the heavens
- 42:03in a sense is still there to declare God's eager, did not
- 42:07desire to rescue you. And this place, if you do not
- 42:09know, Jesus Christ, as Lord and savior.
- 42:13That he wants to descend upon your life to save you.
- 42:19And to redeem you and to rescue you.
- 42:20And not the judge you condemn you. and I wonder if you believe
- 42:27that about God, That he broke into this world, to come to save
- 42:33you from your sin before. It's too late.
- 42:38See again, him breaking through the world's roof and descending
- 42:42upon the Messiah so that he could commence his ministry in
- 42:46the power that he needed. Is a visualization of the rescue
- 42:52mission of God from Heaven, trying to get you into his fold.
- 42:58And I wonder if you believe that today, How can you be?
- 43:03So, casual with the gospel being preached?
- 43:05If you do not know Christ, When Christ commencing his ministry
- 43:10in the Holy Spirit and the father that trinitarian
- 43:14relationship being on full display was nothing of being
- 43:19casual or light. But being very intentional and
- 43:25forceful to save you. That's what I'm bringing forth
- 43:30to you today. And some of you have responded
- 43:33that some of you have beheld and understood the significance of
- 43:37Jesus and the Heart behind him coming to save.
- 43:41And some of you haven't got it yet, I'm just going to be
- 43:42honest. That's okay.
- 43:46Because today you can all change today can change today.
- 43:51It can all change through the message that you just heard.
- 43:57because, The heavens will open again.
- 44:02And it could happen in our lifetime.
- 44:04People are more convinced of that truth today than ever
- 44:06before. And if that is true, Then what
- 44:11will come your way when the heavens do open?
- 44:17Will it be what? That Dove at least the
- 44:20manifestation of Dove like qualities?
- 44:23On that day. Be what you experience.
- 44:25In other words, the peace of God through Jesus Christ.
- 44:30Or will it be what Revelation talks about?
- 44:33Where that era of Peace? The invitation has been made
- 44:36out? You've heard it, you're
- 44:37accountable and now he comes to judge.
- 44:41I hope you be on the side of knowing his peace.
- 44:45He loves you more than you can imagine.
- 44:48He died for you, he came for you.
- 44:52And as we come to this table, we are remembering that, and this
- 44:56is really, for those who have embraced that truth and have
- 45:00been changed by that truth. And so, as we come to the table,
- 45:03can we prepare our hearts to receive and remember what Jesus
- 45:07has done for us? Louis, thank you for just a
- 45:29glimpse of the significance of your baptism.
- 45:33We thank you for the Practical truth.
- 45:35We thank you for the truths that make our faith unique Lord as we
- 45:40come to the table and observe the ordinance that you've
- 45:44established for your church, may be an act of worship on our part
- 45:49and may it bring healing reconciliation and Reviving to
- 45:53our own hearts. But we thank you that you took
- 45:57our place. You stood in our place, we thank
- 46:02you that you are willing to identify with us and receive the
- 46:04Wrath that we deserved Lord for those in this place who do not
- 46:09believe that. Would you open their eyes?
- 46:14We do open their eyes to see the force of Your Love.
- 46:18Even in the skies being opened in such a way to come and reach
- 46:23down and rescue us so that we can be with you forever.
- 46:27Well, we love you for this and we give you glory in Jesus name,
- 46:31amen.
