- 0:07How you doing everybody? This is Wes Hodges along with Lon Simmons.
- 0:11We live this game of baseball every day, 365 days a year.
- 0:15But sometimes we need a reminder.
- 0:18Now tell me Lon, did the Giants really win the pennant in the year 1962?
- 0:23Well I think maybe we can let the Giants tell that story Russ,
- 0:26but we have to go all the way back to April 10th at Candlestick Park in the first inning as the Braves and the Giants are playing.
- 0:33And center fielder Willie Mays.
- 0:36He's got something to say now.
- 0:39And the fans here today are seeing something they've never seen.
- 0:42Willie is wearing a batter's helmet this year.
- 0:46In previous years he always wore the cap with the plastic inner lining.
- 0:50But at the request of manager Alvin Dark, he went for the full helmet.
- 0:55He wears it all over his baseball cap.
- 0:58Bond throws to the Giants center fielder.
- 1:00There's a swing and a long drive to deep left center fielder and he can kill it.
- 1:03Bye bye baby!
- 1:07What a way to start off the season. One pitch, one home run.
- 1:12Well that was sort of an indication Russ of how things were going to start.
- 1:15But it wasn't all offense as far as the Giants were concerned.
- 1:18There was some defense involved too.
- 1:20So all we have to do is go to the ninth inning of that first game and let's go throw each the batter.
- 1:24And he takes a Carl Stryk over the outside.
- 1:28Tommy Erd has second base.
- 1:30Mike Bowling just at first. Nobody down.
- 1:32The Giants lead 6-0.
- 1:34Here's the pitch. Fastball hit on the ground at Davenport at third.
- 1:36Over to second for one. Back to first.
- 1:38Oh my gosh!
- 1:40They don't call him the kid with the golden glove for nothing.
- 1:43That started out to be a face hit. A hard smash to Davenport's left.
- 1:47That is the only time today that Marichal has needed something extra in the way of support.
- 1:52And he really got it there.
- 1:54And then still in April at Candlestick Park after Mays hit a home run on the sixth off O'Toole,
- 1:58the Giants led 4-1 in Billy Pierce's first game.
- 2:02Then in the seventh, Pagan was on with two outs when Sepeda came to bat.
- 2:06O'Toole with a new baseball.
- 2:08Getting the sign.
- 2:10Stretches. Pagan leads the first.
- 2:13There's the pitch. Pagan going again.
- 2:17And there's a long drive to the left field.
- 2:19And now then you can tell that was a good ball.
- 2:22Orlando Sepeda gets his first home run of the year.
- 2:25A long drive over the left field fence.
- 2:28And the Giants now lead it by a score of 6-1.
- 2:31April 14th, Candlestick Park against the Cincinnati Reds.
- 2:34Score tied in the third inning 4-4 with one out back-to-back home runs.
- 2:39One down. Base is empty. 4-4 ball game bottom of the third.
- 2:44Next pitch to Sepeda.
- 2:45There's one. You can throw that good-bye. That's way out of here.
- 2:49Way back into the seats in the left field.
- 2:51And Sepeda gets his second home run.
- 2:57Orlando Sepeda really cracked one about five or six rows deep in the left field seat.
- 3:02He just waited on that pitch.
- 3:05And matched it.
- 3:07So the Giants are back out in front now, 5-4.
- 3:11And then Philippe O'Lough got into the act.
- 3:14That was ready for the 1-0 pitch.
- 3:17Slow curve. And that one's just deep to the left field.
- 3:20Going back at post. And Kelly is good now.
- 3:27Philippe O'Lough gets his first home run of the season.
- 3:30As he climbed the slow curve, waited on it.
- 3:33Hit it over the left field fence.
- 3:36Then in the first game with the Dodgers at Candlestick Park,
- 3:39Big Stan Williams pitching for Los Angeles.
- 3:41And Philippe O'Lough is up at the plate.
- 3:44One ball, no strikes. One down. Bottom of the second.
- 3:49Rosebara's target. Williams' curve ball hits the deep center field.
- 3:52Far back, Warden Fairley. Far back. Far back.
- 3:55Tell it bye-bye baby.
- 3:59After a quick survey here in the radio booth,
- 4:02that is the farthest we have seen a ball hit the center field.
- 4:05It went into the extreme corner of the country features.
- 4:10Well, you've seen where Walt Courtney's fans sit.
- 4:13Well, it even went to the right of that.
- 4:16Had to go 433.
- 4:18That was in the second inning. Then in the third inning.
- 4:20Jimmy Davenport.
- 4:22Williams throws one and one.
- 4:24Davenport hits a long high drive to deep left field.
- 4:27Moon is clear back. Tell it bye-bye baby.
- 4:30And more home runs to come.
- 4:33Willie Mays.
- 4:35Young left-hander Willard Hunter pitches to Willie Mays.
- 4:38There's a long high drive to deep left center field.
- 4:41And you can tell it bye-bye baby.
- 4:50Three home runs and consecutive innings by the Giants.
- 4:53But now let's go on the road and back to the field.
- 4:56Three home runs and consecutive innings by the Giants, but now let's go on the road and back to Pittsburgh at Forbes Field
- 5:02where the Giants are involved in a big Donnybrook.
- 5:05Bailey has had one out of two.
- 5:07Two down, top of the six, Bob Brand ready to pitch.
- 5:11Over Bailey's head and all the way back to the screen and Bailey turns to yell something out to Bob Brand
- 5:18and we might have a little fun. Here come all the Giants out right now.
- 5:22And now Leopard threads up Bailey around the net and they've got a real good one going.
- 5:28They've got a real good one going. Bob Brand tries to throw a punch at Bailey.
- 5:32Leopard jumped on Bailey when Bailey's back was turned.
- 5:36Bob Brand, as you recall, hit Jack Sanford in the hand two seasons ago and sidelined him for six weeks.
- 5:47And that was a creaser if ever you've thrown one.
- 5:50It appears that they'd have to put everybody out of the game so nobody's going to get thrown out.
- 5:56Three one pitch. Swung on and fell in a long way to deep right field and that ball is going back.
- 6:02You can tell it by my baby.
- 6:06It's Bailey after being no rigged. It's his fifth home run of the season.
- 6:11Way back. Lower deck to the right and the Giants lead five to two.
- 6:16Well that fight may have inspired the Giants, at least it inspired Don Larson who came on in the sixth inning
- 6:22with one of the finest relief jobs of the year. Ten pitches and three outs against the Pirates.
- 6:27So there are two men down and Roberto Cometto who has come out with a virus on the starting line up tonight
- 6:36is coming in the pitch head and they really love this guy here in Pitchford.
- 6:41And they should. He delivers great ball for them.
- 6:45Now ready for the pitch by Larson.
- 6:48He throws to Clemente. Strike called the fastball on the inside corner.
- 7:03Count is 0 and 1.
- 7:10Pitch by Larson. The pitch to Clemente. Swung on and missed. Strike two. A curve ball.
- 7:26Count is on too.
- 7:31Stu Miller loosens for the Giants along with Nick Lemay.
- 7:37Two on, two down, two strikes on the batter. The Giants leading five to two in the bottom of the sixth.
- 7:42As Larson has the sign from Bailey who crouches low and outside. There's the pitch. He strikes him out swinging.
- 7:48Larson struck out the side on ten pitch balls.
- 7:53Three in a row to Leffert. Three out of four to Maserowski and three out of three to pitch hitter Bob Clemente.
- 8:01Saw the pitches. The regular's doing well but until April 27th at Candlestick Park not a single pinch hit for any one of the Giants who came off the bench to swing in the pitch.
- 8:11April 27th Willie McCovey steps up with Davenport on at second base and the Giants down by two runs.
- 8:19There's the stretch. Now Davenport leads. A one and one pitch.
- 8:23Larson drives to deep right field. That one is going back there and Helly good-bye.
- 8:31Willie McCovey becomes the first Giant head hitter to deliver a hit and that was a big one. A two-run homer on the Giants.
- 8:39Well you sometimes have to get runs in bunches. The Giants could do that as against the Cubs at Candlestick Park, Willie Mays got a hold of a big one.
- 8:49Davenport, Matt Shell and Chuck Hiller all ready to head for the barn as Mays can connect. A two and oh count as Larry's into the windup.
- 8:56The pitch. Mays sends a long high drive to deep left field. Williams is going far back, far back.
- 9:02Helly good-bye, bye baby, you're a Grand Clown.
- 9:05No rush. You have to have the offense and the defense. And if you'll remember back to Mays second at Candlestick Park against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 9:13The score tied two to two in the sixth and Willie Mays the best.
- 9:16He's just winding the throw to Willie. Long high drive to deep left field. Tell it, bye, bye, maybes.
- 9:24That was the bye-bye baby all right Russ, but Chuck Hiller playing at second base for the Giants in the 62 season came up with some fabulous defensive play.
- 9:33This small game he saved with two out and one on in the eighth inning.
- 9:38Big Bob Skinner. Now Cepeda and Bailey have a conversation with one Matt Shell as Big Bob Skinner is up here.
- 9:46He is homeward. Good for two runs on his bounce to the box on his last two turns at bat in the third and sixth.
- 9:53Always dangerous. He swings that big bat for you. The one and oh delivery.
- 9:58Bounding ball is hit wide at first base. Cepeda can't get it. Hiller does. Throw to Matt Shell and he climbs.
- 10:03A fine play by Chuck Hiller. And the side of the back.
- 10:08Well the very next day at Candlestick Park against the same Pittsburgh Pirates, Chuck Hiller shows he can go to the offense as well as the defense.
- 10:15Let's turn to the bottom of the eighth inning. Chuck Hiller is the giant batter now with runners at first and third and one out.
- 10:21Haddix looks around at the infield. Here's the pitch to Chuck Hiller. Swin on basically right field.
- 10:28Seven for a bounding second and holds. A Pagan score. Chuck Hiller.
- 10:34Running a drive into right field for his third hit. The Giants on top five to four.
- 10:39Well Chuck Hiller delivering against the left hand pitcher Harvey Haddix. Now a left hand batter Russ.
- 10:44You'll remember this. May 10th at St. Louis as Willie McCovey is batting.
- 10:48Gibson checking with his catcher Gene Oliver. Now he's up and they're ready.
- 10:54Rose two and two. McCovey swings. Christ tell it by five baby. And I mean tell it by five baby.
- 11:02That one went clear over the right field rope and disappeared down the street on its way to the hamburger joint.
- 11:08Well that was on the way to the hamburger joint as you said Russ. The Giants were looking for bigger things than hamburger. They were looking for stakes.
- 11:15Let's take another look at the Cardinals against the Giants. This time at Candlestick Park.
- 11:19It's the ninth inning and Juan Marichal and Chuck Hiller again team up to snuff out a Cardinal rally and give the Giants a seven to two win.
- 11:28Now the top of the order coming up and Kirk Flood will be the batter.
- 11:33This is a fellow that has himself a home run and a single so things are getting a bit tense here.
- 11:39Three on. One out. Now the Olin two wind up by Marichal. Over the top of the fastball it's hit up the middle.
- 11:47Hiller stops it. Tags second. The first. A double play and the ball game is over.
- 11:54Then at Candlestick Park as those rowdy Giants once again flex their muscles it was against the New York Mets.
- 12:00And Willie Mays had singled a drive in a runoff Roger Craig. The situation getting tense as Orlando Cepeda came up to the plate.
- 12:08That'll bring on Orlando Cepeda. He is singles twice and flat out. Orlando waiting for Craig's first pitch. Mays at first. Two men down.
- 12:16And Cepeda is hit by an inside pitch and runs all the way out towards the mound.
- 12:22After being hit. Now everybody's gathered around out there. Willie Mays, Orlando Cepeda.
- 12:27We almost had a little scuffle with Cepeda. Ran straight towards the mound after being hit.
- 12:32Still had the bat in his hand. He and Craig exchanged unpleasant reason. Now Cepeda is dragging two or three people with him.
- 12:38He's really after Craig. Manager Alvin Dark finally held onto him and Cepeda really started to take off for Roger Craig.
- 12:46And Dark grabbed ahold of him and held him back. A good thing Alvin played football down at LSU.
- 12:53He really had to tackle foot on Orlando Cepeda. He had to tackle him pretty quick. Orlando really put his head down and started to go for Craig.
- 13:01Willie Mays probably in high sympathy with Orlando because Craig decked Mays twice. Not too sure if I were Mr. Craig if I'd want to say too much to Orlando.
- 13:11He's a lot of pinch ahead of him. And more of that same situation. Mays at second. Roger Craig had thrown back there twice to try to pick him off.
- 13:19J Bluffs now. Now throw to second base and Mays is back in. And now Jacone starts hitting Mays. Mays jumps on him and Cepeda and Craig are at it. Cepeda and Craig and Cepeda gets in a left hook.
- 13:33Boy we've got a brawl at second base. As Jacone started hitting Mays on top of the head as they were lying there. Mays picked Jacone up and threw him on the ground.
- 13:42Cepeda swung a left hook and almost decked Craig. We've got ballplayers all over there. Russ I don't know what that was about. Mays split into second and Jacone just started hitting him on the head.
- 13:54Mays picked Jacone up and threw him down on the ground. Cepeda came over and swung a beautiful left hook that nailed Roger Craig right on the button.
- 14:03Well I've seen some good ones but this is the best when they get squared off individually like that. It's the first time I've ever seen Mays throw a punch. And after Jacone hit him Mays tagged him once and picked him up and bounced him around on the ground.
- 14:17Then Cepeda went for Craig and gave him as good a left hook as I have ever seen. And all in all this one of all I've ever seen this was the best baseball brawl because there was no kidding around about this.
- 14:33There was no pushing, harling and tagging. They were really throwing up for cuts and a lot of them were landing. And I don't think the Giants lost a single fracas.
- 14:43Well the Giants might not have been named world champions for their fighting but nevertheless they were a fighting ball club. And back in Philadelphia three days later on May 30th, manager Alvin Dark showed that he wasn't afraid to take chances.
- 14:55On the bottom of the eighth he walked the potential winning run Tony Gonzalez to first base with a runner at third. Let's listen to the action as Juan Marichal pitches to Jack Davis with a count one and two.
- 15:05Juan Marichal throws to Jack Davis swing a line guard to Fagan at right catch. He just hit a bullet toward left center and Fagan went about six feet high to top down with that ball. Boy that one was ticketed for extra base hit probably a two run double.
- 15:23But Fagan makes the grab but the side is retired. Well the great defensive save by Jose Fagan saved the ball game right there. The Giants went on to win it in the 12th inning four to three with Stu Miller relieving Marichal and getting credit for the victory.
- 15:37That was the first game of a doubleheader. It showed defense. The second game the Giants went back to the offense again against Philadelphia as Tom Haller bats.
- 15:45Davenport leads. Here's the pitch to Haller a swing at a high flight at deep right center field far back is Callison and Tellett five five baby.
- 15:57Tommy Haller hits his fourth home run of the season. Clear down for the scoreboard in right center just where the scoreboard jumps out at right field and clears the wall with plenty of despair.
- 16:09So the Giants lead it by a score of four to nothing and Mike McCormick will be up to play. And Mike McCormick went on to win the ball game.
- 16:19Then the Giants invaded the Polo grounds their own home for their first game on the 1st of June in 1962 a place that has seen a lot of fabulous hitting and playing.
- 16:29And let's see what Jimmy Davenport does in the seventh inning.
- 16:33The main single to pay the struck out a loose single to drive in a run. Haller walk with the bases are loaded. One man down and a two strike count on Jimmy Davenport.
- 16:44Hunter taking a long look at the side. Now the left hander takes his stretch. Runners leading from every station there. They two strike hit.
- 16:51Now the right field line that's going to camp and a big four home run. Jimmy Davenport with a grand slammer just inside the right field foul ball into the upper deck.
- 17:10Well that was a big home run for Jimmy Davenport but just a day later another big one the second game for doubleheader at the Polo grounds score Todd need born for Stu Miller on first Harvey Keane at the plate.
- 17:21In waiting.
- 17:24It's the Harvey swung on line drive foul the right field. Harvey was trying to take a shot of that right to the corner.
- 17:31Miller standing close to first.
- 17:35Anderson throws Keane swings here's a high flight of right field.
- 17:45Harvey Keane gets the second home run of the season in the upper deck of the right field stands and puts the Giants ahead six to four.
- 17:53Then late in June. Lone as Edgar Bailey got himself into a fine streak of hitting home runs this one very dramatic with Cincinnati leading and his old pal Joey J a former battery mate on the mound bases loaded at Bailey at bat.
- 18:07Bailey batting for Stanford here in the seven seven port doubles the gun singled him to third Haller walk to load him up. What I nothing count on that Bailey I feel deep and around to the right one open a long drive.
- 18:23And followed his grand slam with a couple more big home runs for the San Francisco Giants. Let's see if he can get four in one week on June the 30th against Art Mahaffey and the Phil's.
- 18:36So here is wellness Edgar Bailey to swing the bat against the Philadelphia Phil's.
- 18:42He is grounded out in his only figures.
- 18:47The fatal leads at first, I have become set throws Bailey hits a long.
- 18:56Well the dramatic home run by at Bailey as he was really in his street.
- 19:02Let's go to the Fourth of July at Candlestick Park and the Giants decided to have some fireworks Billy O'Dell one of the top competitors for the Giants pitches his way out of a jam and they sixth inning goes on to win the ballgame eight to three giants leading the Mets five to two.
- 19:18Frank Thomas is that second base Joe Christopher at first.
- 19:22Joe has another tough situation here. He throws to hit when a curveball it's ripped a Davenport who falls thanks third straightens up throws the first in time.
- 19:33Well great defense again but now let's go back to the offense one of the great Dodger killers Harvey Keene at the Giants lead for nothing against the Dodgers Harvey comes to bat.
- 19:44Gary wine throws three to King swing.
- 19:59That was July 7th at Candlestick. Now let's go to July 16th at the Polo grounds rookie Bob Garibaldi debuted sensationally the day before but this even a better performance.
- 20:10The cone is on a third base Ashford is on it first the double steal possibly of course is here also as Garibaldi looks into getting side and listen to these fans trying to rattle Garibaldi.
- 20:25He delivers to the plate to Peniel who swings and here's a looping fly ball in the short center.
- 20:29The base is in her way for Garibaldi he got the side out and here's a lander subpoena to come over and pat the guy on the back as they began jumping up and down and Alvin Dark out there to congratulate one pitch.
- 20:41The Giants out of the woods and the ball game is in the clubhouse and the Giants when that one three to two.
- 20:48Now another great relief job. This one by Bob Bolan in Milwaukee as the Giants win it four to three.
- 20:54One man away runners at first and third and Bolan loosening up out there Bolan making his 21st appearance.
- 21:02They started three times completed one.
- 21:05For no record as an earned run average of three point seven five and he'll be facing Del Crandall.
- 21:11Pagan and Hiller back in double play position.
- 21:14Davenport close to third to keep Hank Aaron close.
- 21:17Bob Bolan ready the pitch to Crandall swung on grounded to Pagan it's short. Both the Hiller for one back to first base double play it's all over the Giants have won it.
- 21:27Four to three as Bob Bolan came in to get the job done.
- 21:31Let's switch back to Candlestick Park again the date is August 9th.
- 21:34It's the bottom of the sixth versus the New York Mets. The Giants lead two to one and then the power goes to work.
- 21:41Cepeda who has flying to left field twice will be up now.
- 21:47The Giants lead the Mets two to one.
- 21:51And Miller sends the next one in.
- 21:54Cepeda sends a high drive down the right field line slicing toward foul territory and that's what he's done tell it bye bye baby.
- 22:03Home run for Cepeda. Up in the wind down in the right field corner and the Giants lead three to one.
- 22:12The Giants battle will be Tommy Haller.
- 22:15Davenport has his second hit.
- 22:18The Giants have their.
- 22:23The Mets have three as the Giants lead three to one.
- 22:26Now Matty Lou leads at second base.
- 22:29Haller has struck out and walked.
- 22:32Miller throws Haller swings his alarm drives to right field. Backboard is woodley cutted bye bye baby.
- 22:38That was the power but you have to have the pitching. Jack Sanford had it that day with his 15th win.
- 22:43We'll hear more from Jack later as he's on a sensational win streak.
- 22:47Now let's go to more power. August 11th at Candlestick Park.
- 22:50Willie McCovey against Don Drysdale.
- 22:53It's three and it's two with two down and the Dodgers lead three to two and the Lews at second and Odell is at first.
- 22:59McCovey waiting on the three to pitch from Don Drysdale.
- 23:03So we've struck out seven Giants so far and that is I'd say on number eight.
- 23:07Drysdale is ready. He winds throws McCovey hits a long foul and cut it bye bye baby.
- 23:22That's one of the big thrills in the history of Candlestick Park.
- 23:26To see Willie McCovey put the Giants ahead five to three.
- 23:31Billy Pierce had pitched sensationally up to then as McCovey pitch hit for Pierce to Miller came on and Miller delivered key relief work.
- 23:39So the Dodgers very much alive as they have the tying runner at first base and nobody out.
- 23:45And the big man mountain Frank Howard up to swing the bat.
- 23:50Miller checks the runner at first.
- 23:53Throws to Howard a fastball is hit to Pagan at short over to Hiller for one.
- 23:57Back to first ball it to the public.
- 24:01Two men down.
- 24:03Ronnie Fairley the runner down.
- 24:06Miller throws to Fairley who taps it towards shortstop.
- 24:09Pagan has to hurry.
- 24:11Comes up throws in time.
- 24:15And the Giants have won it by the score of five to four.
- 24:19All season Jose Pagan beating you with the glove.
- 24:22This day August the 12th at Candlestick Park off big Stan Williams on the fourth inning a triple to bat them to a win.
- 24:29Stan Williams working with Alou on it first.
- 24:31Filippa is two for two today.
- 24:34He's weighted at first as Haller flies to center and Hiller was called out on strike.
- 24:38Now Pagan is up here.
- 24:41And the stretch by Williams then he lobs to throw over to Ron Fairley again.
- 24:47It's not a real pick out move just something to let Alou know that he's aware the police is over there.
- 24:55Alou is running.
- 24:56The pitch is lined to the left center field.
- 24:58It's in between them.
- 24:59Alou will score.
- 25:00Shetball bounces to the fifth.
- 25:02Pagan is digging into second.
- 25:03He may try for three.
- 25:04He's headed for third.
- 25:05Wells with the relay.
- 25:07No throw.
- 25:08Pagan's in with a triple.
- 25:10And the Giants beat the Dodgers five to one.
- 25:13The heroes were many for the Giants.
- 25:15The Giants are on the field on August 23rd.
- 25:17The Mets at the Polo grounds in New York.
- 25:19The Giants have lost six out of seven.
- 25:21And then Ernie Bowman starts us on a five game win streak.
- 25:27Leading off with the Giants hitting number five.
- 25:29The second baseman Ernie Bowman will be followed by Juan Marichal and then by Harvey King.
- 25:36Ernie Bowman who grounded out to first on the system his first time is up.
- 25:40With New York leading one to nothing.
- 25:42The young left-hander throws to the plate.
- 25:44The swing to the line drive deep to left field and tell it bye bye baby.
- 25:50Ernie Bowman, hovering into the left field stand for the first home run of his major league career.
- 25:55That was only part of the dramatics for Ernie Bowman that day.
- 25:58Let's switch now to the top of the tenth.
- 26:02Orsino at second.
- 26:03Pagan at first.
- 26:04Two down.
- 26:05Top of the tenth.
- 26:06One to one ball again.
- 26:07Orsino and Pagan ready to crank up and go.
- 26:10Here's the third baseman Ernie Bowman trying to move in behind Orsino.
- 26:14Here's the three two fifth.
- 26:16Ground ball up the middle base hit.
- 26:18Coming in to score Orsino throwing the third Pagan.
- 26:21And Bowman is driven in his second run the Giants lead it through the walk.
- 26:25September 3rd the Giants try to break a ten game Los Angeles streak at Dodger Stadium.
- 26:30They've lost ten in a row to the Dodgers in LA.
- 26:32As they send Willie Mays to bat against Stan Williams in the third inning.
- 26:36Willie Mays up here to a walk his first time.
- 26:38Runners at first and third with now one man out.
- 26:41Stan Williams takes the stretch for the pitch to Mays.
- 26:45A long high drive hits the left field.
- 26:48Allen's going way back.
- 26:49Snyder back near the wall.
- 26:51Tell it goodbye.
- 26:53Willie Mays with number 42 drives in three runs there.
- 26:57The Giants lead it four to one.
- 26:59A high towering shot over the 370 foot mark.
- 27:03Well Willie Mays got the punch going but another streak was going.
- 27:07Jack Sanford tries for his 20th victory of the year.
- 27:11And let's turn to the ninth inning as Sanford pitches to Johnny Roseboro.
- 27:15And it's now seven to three ball game with two men out.
- 27:18The batter will be John Roseboro.
- 27:21Two down, base is empty, two runs in.
- 27:24Giants lead it seven to three.
- 27:27Jack Sanford just one out of the way now.
- 27:30Right under one there's the pitch.
- 27:32Ball off the foot of Roseboro strike one.
- 27:36And one count to Roseboro.
- 27:39Here's the pitch bounded to Hiller.
- 27:41This could be it.
- 27:42Hiller has it.
- 27:43Rose the first, that's all.
- 27:44The Giants win it.
- 27:46A first win for the Giants and Dodgers stadium.
- 27:48Jack Sanford wins his 14th in a row.
- 27:50His 20th win of the season.
- 27:53And the Giants have broken a ten game losing streak in Los Angeles.
- 27:57The Giants and Dodgers split the next two.
- 27:59The Dodgers winning five to four and the Giants three to nothing.
- 28:01It's Marichal and Boland combined for a shutout.
- 28:04That set the stage for great dramatics.
- 28:06On the 6th of September in the ninth inning with the score tied,
- 28:09Orlando Cepeda drove base on balls off Ron Paranosky.
- 28:12The Giants went ahead six to five and blue eyed Harvey Keane came to bat.
- 28:17One and two count to Harvey.
- 28:19Base is loaded, two men down, six to five.
- 28:21The Giants lead top of the ninth, the windup and the pitch.
- 28:24Line drive, base hit into left center field.
- 28:26That's going to go clear to the wall.
- 28:28Two runs score.
- 28:30Cepeda's around third.
- 28:31He's coming in to score and Keane has himself a double.
- 28:34And the score gets by Rosebourne.
- 28:36Keane goes to third base.
- 28:39Harvey Keane ripping a solid liner in the left center field.
- 28:44For a double to score three runners.
- 28:47And the Giants wind up winning that one nine to six.
- 28:50Now on September 11th, another dramatic highlight.
- 28:52Pittsburgh at Candlestick Park,
- 28:54top of the ninth as Jack Sanford tries to tie a major league record of 16 wins in a row.
- 28:59Two to nothing San Francisco, top of the ninth.
- 29:02Don Clendenin at first.
- 29:04Schofield waiting on the two and oh pitch.
- 29:07Sanford throws, Schofield bounds it to the right side.
- 29:10Cepeda flicks to Sanford and the ballgame is over.
- 29:13Jack Sanford has won his 16th in a row in shutout style.
- 29:18Russ, an answer to your question at the start of this tape.
- 29:21We were talking about did the Giants win the pennants.
- 29:24Well the last game of the season and all the dramatics wrapped up in this one.
- 29:28San Francisco hopeful of a Dodger loss and a Giants win.
- 29:32Ed Bailey is at the plate and Ed looks like he hits one, then he doesn't, then he does.
- 29:38Let's listen.
- 29:39Whitey Lachman and Wes Westrom facing up and down in the third and first base coaching lines respectively.
- 29:48Crowd sitting in anticipation waiting for some fireworks.
- 29:51The pitch, there's a swing and a long drive.
- 29:53That might be the fireworks.
- 29:54It's deep in the right field.
- 29:55It is full by inches.
- 30:02Full count with one out to big X.
- 30:05Parallel in the motion, here it is.
- 30:07There's a swing and another drive.
- 30:09Throw back in the right field.
- 30:10That one is going.
- 30:11It is gone for a whole run.
- 30:20Well Houston tied it at one and one, but then Russ you'll recall this.
- 30:24Willie Mays batting in the eighth inning and more dramatics.
- 30:28As Farrell is warming up for the bottom of the eighth inning, Lloyd Fox, the very fine organist here at Candlestick Park,
- 30:35who uses so much showmanship, is suggesting, faintly, you know, putting in the subtle net as he's playing bye-bye baby.
- 30:44As Willie Mays, Willie McCovey and Ed Bailey, will face Nick Farrell in the bottom of the eighth inning
- 30:50with a score tied here at one and one and tied at the end of five innings at Dodger Stadium.
- 30:56Nothing to nothing, the cards against the Dodgers.
- 30:59The entire 162 games wrapped right up here today on the west coast at Dodger Stadium and here at Candlestick Park.
- 31:10Here's Farrell winding.
- 31:11He throws to Mays.
- 31:12Willie swings, slaps it foul.
- 31:14He's the right fielder.
- 31:160-1 pitch.
- 31:17Mays hits it with a three.
- 31:19Hit it boy, boy, baby!
- 31:22Mays put one in the organist.
- 31:38That's as long a home run as he's ever hit in his career.
- 31:41Hits far back up to the left field.
- 31:44Leaps in the giant, 2-1.
- 31:46Mays 47-4.
- 31:48The Lloyd Fox really was psychic on that one as he played bye-bye maybe before.
- 31:55Mays came up to the plate.
- 31:57Well, we had dramatics in 62.
- 31:59You want an oddity?
- 32:00Willie Mays hit the first pitch he saw in the season for a home run off Warren Spahn.
- 32:04He hit the last pitch he saw in the regular season off Dick Farrell for a home run.
- 32:08Now let's go to the ninth inning of that same ball game, the last day of the season.
- 32:12Billy Goodman up.
- 32:13Stu Miller pitching a 2-2 count.
- 32:16Now the delivery.
- 32:18Here's a swing and it's a 4-0.
- 32:23The Giants are awarded by a score of 2-1.
- 32:28They haven't won anything yet, but they're still alive.
- 32:32A tremendous thriller winding up here at Janice Dick Park as Stu Miller cuts the side out of order
- 32:41and the Giants have won their 100th first ball game of the season.
- 32:45Two runs, nine hits, no errors.
- 32:48One run, seven hits, and no errors.
- 32:52The crowd didn't leave then, and as they were doing at Kizar Stadium,
- 32:56they were listening to you Russ as you were explaining what was going on down at Chavez-Ravis.
- 33:01Simmons checks with a rosin bag and fiddles around.
- 33:05He knows the importance of this pitch.
- 33:08So does Gilliam.
- 33:10So do the some 50,000 fans at Dodger Stadium.
- 33:14He pops up to Javier. We have a playoff.
- 33:22Well Lon, you've proven one thing for me.
- 33:24In 1962, at least the San Francisco Giants tied for the pennant.
- 33:28Well they certainly did Russ, if you're still not convinced, let's go to tomorrow and the playoff.
- 33:34Good idea.
- 33:35In that first game of the playoff, home runs but Davenport, Zepeda, two by Willie Mays,
- 33:39and a bases loaded double by Pagan.
- 33:41Billy Pierce went into the ninth inning leading eight to nothing, two outs and Frank Howard at bat.
- 33:48One ball, two strikes.
- 33:50Giants leading eight to nothing here in the top of the ninth, two outs and the bases empty for the Dodgers.
- 33:56Billy Pierce won the one and two pitch.
- 33:59Swirling and missed, he struck him out.
- 34:01The Giants have won it and Pierce bashed him a shutout on a three hitter.
- 34:07And the Giants have won the first game of the playoff, Pierce is mobbed as they leave the field.
- 34:12What about that second game Lon?
- 34:14Oh forget it Russ, I'm trying to convince you the Giants won the pennant. Let's go on to the third one.
- 34:19Alright, this was down to Chevez Ravine.
- 34:21The Dodgers leading in the top of the ninth inning by a score of four to two.
- 34:24Mattie Allou at bat is a pinch hitter for Don Larson.
- 34:27Mattie Allou waiting as Ed Robock winds the pitch.
- 34:30Line drive, base hitter to right center field.
- 34:32Mattie Allou hitting the first pitch and singles to center.
- 34:35The Giants have a shot at it.
- 34:37Mattie was forced by Harvey Keene.
- 34:39McCovey batted for Hiller and drew a base on balls.
- 34:41Philippe Ballou also walked, they were loaded.
- 34:44Maye singled, one run came in and the Giants trailed by one four to three.
- 34:48And here is Orlando Cepeda with a chance to tie it or win it.
- 34:52Now the wind up for the pitch to Cepeda.
- 34:54A fly ball hits it deep right.
- 34:56Fairleigh's going back.
- 34:57He makes the catch, here comes Boland panging.
- 34:59Here's the throw, it's going to be close but Boland scores and the ball tied up.
- 35:04Then with Ed Bailey batting there was a passed ball.
- 35:06Maye went to second so Bailey drew an intentional pass.
- 35:09And that set the stage for Jim Davenport.
- 35:12Three and one count to Davenport.
- 35:14Jimmy checks the bat.
- 35:16Wait, the base is loaded, two outs.
- 35:18Dan Williams with a three one count.
- 35:20Big right hander ready.
- 35:22Here's the pitch.
- 35:24Ball poor, he walked in and that forces in a lead run.
- 35:27Davenport goes the first as Williams walks.
- 35:31Davenport a loop, comes in the Giants lead at five to four.
- 35:35And the Giants with a chance to get some more runs.
- 35:38As the bases remain loaded they might need insurance going into the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 35:42And Jose Pagan the batter.
- 35:44Jose Pagan up here, Jose is two for four.
- 35:48Ron Paranowski with a one and one count.
- 35:51Here's the pitch.
- 35:52Ground ball to second base.
- 35:54Furlough foul hits, throws to second, not in time and a run scores.
- 35:58The stage comes in.
- 36:02That proved to be a big run because there in Chavez Ravine the Dodgers are very tough.
- 36:06So Billy Pierce had been the hero of the first game pitching a shutout.
- 36:10Let's hear him pitch to Lee Walls in the bottom of the ninth inning with two down.
- 36:14So with a count one and one on Lee Walls, Lee backs away.
- 36:17Doesn't want Pierce to quick pitch him and Pierce backs off the rubber now.
- 36:21Two down, bases empty, Giants six, Dodgers four, bottom of the ninth.
- 36:26Here's one, here's the pitch.
- 36:28A line drive to center this trip, he had Mays waiting.
- 36:31He's done it, it goes through the house.
- 36:34The Giants have won it.
- 36:36Here's his mom by the Giants, they won it six to four on a dramatic four run rally in the ninth.
- 36:42The Giants are going crazy down there.
- 36:44Well see what I told you Russ, the Giants did win the pennant.
- 36:47You know I believe after all they did that must have really been something in that clubhouse.
- 36:51I'd like to remember it myself, I can't.
- 36:53Shall we listen into a bit of the clubhouse?
- 36:56Alright, where is Alvin?
- 36:58Oh fine, here's our great minster Alvin.
- 37:01Alvin you had it all the way didn't you?
- 37:03Well I'll tell you, the fellows just showed me more and more and more that they just bounced back when they walked through and half through.
- 37:09They've done this all year long and uh, yes.
- 37:13Turn around here so we can catch it on the camera.
- 37:14Alvin we were just talking about the ball players, the fact that all year long they've been bouncing back.
- 37:19It looks like they've been beaten and all of a sudden they bounce back day after day.
- 37:23Lon you have convinced me, the Giants did win the pennant in 1962.
- 37:27What else do you have for us?
- 37:29Only this Russ, remember 51, 54 and 62.
- 37:34That means there will be more and more unpredictable thrills from the San Francisco Giants in years to come.
