- 0:00The law of the new Kingdom. The time of the Passover was drawing near,
- 0:05and again Jesus turned toward Jerusalem. In his heart was the peace of
- 0:10perfect oneness with the Father's will. And with eager steps he pressed on towards
- 0:14the place of sacrifice. But a sense of mystery, of doubt and fear
- 0:18fell upon the disciples. The Savior went before them, and they were amazed,
- 0:23And as they followed, they were afraid. Again. Christ called the
- 0:28twelve about him, and with greater definiteness than ever before, he opened to
- 0:33them his betrayal and sufferings. Behold, he said, we go up to
- 0:37Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son a
- 0:41man shall be accomplished. For he shall be delivered unto the gentiles, and
- 0:45shall be mocked and spitefully entreated and spitted on, and they shall scourge him
- 0:51and put him to death. And the third day he shall rise again.
- 0:55And they understood none of these things, And this saying was hid from them.
- 0:59Neither knew they the things which were spoken. Had they not just before
- 1:03proclaimed everywhere the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand, had not Christ himself promised
- 1:08that many should sit down with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the Kingdom of
- 1:12God. Had he not promised to all who had left aught for his sake
- 1:17a hundredfold in this life and a part in his kingdom, And had he
- 1:21not given to the twelve the special promise of positions of high honor in his
- 1:25kingdom to sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Even now he
- 1:30had said that all things written in the prophets concerning him should be fulfilled,
- 1:34And had not the prophets foretold the glory of the Messiah's reign. In the
- 1:40light of these thoughts, his words in regard to betrayal, persecution, and
- 1:45death seemed vague and shadowy. Whatever difficulties might intervene, they believed that the
- 1:51kingdom was soon to be established. John the son of Zebedee, had been
- 1:55one of the first two disciples who had followed Jesus. He and his brother
- 1:59James had been among the first group who had left all for his service.
- 2:02Gladly, they had forsaken home and friends that they might be with him.
- 2:07They had walked and talked with him. They had been with him in the
- 2:09privacy of the home, and in the public assemblies. He had quieted their
- 2:14fears, delivered them from danger, relieved their sufferings, comforted their grief,
- 2:20and with patience and tenderness, had taught them till their hearts seemed linked with
- 2:23his, and in the ardor of their love, they longed to be nearest
- 2:28to Him in his kingdom at every possible opportunity. John took his place next
- 2:32to Savior, and James longed to be honored with as close connection with him.
- 2:38Their mother was a follower of Christ and administered to him freely of her
- 2:43substance. With a mother's love and ambition for her sons, she coveted for
- 2:47them the most honored place in the new kingdom. For this she encouraged him
- 2:52to make request. Together, the mother and her sons came to Jesus,
- 2:57asking that he would grant a petition on which their heart were set. What
- 3:00would ye that I should do for you, he questioned. The mother answered,
- 3:06grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on my right
- 3:08hand and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. Jesus bears tenderly
- 3:13with them, not rebuking their selfishness and seeking preference above their brethren. He
- 3:17reads her hearts. He knows the depth of their attachment to him. Their
- 3:22love is not a mere human affection, though defiled by the earthliness of its
- 3:27human channel, it is an outflowing from the fountain of his own redeeming love.
- 3:30He will not rebuke, but deepen and purify. He said, are
- 3:36ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of? And to
- 3:38be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They recall his mysterious
- 3:45words, pointing to trial and suffering, Yet answer confidently, we are able.
- 3:51They would count it highest honor to prove their loyalty by sharing all that
- 3:55is to befall their Lord. Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and
- 4:00be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with. He said before him
- 4:04a cross instead of a throne. Two malefactors, his companions at his right
- 4:09hand and his left, John and James, were to share with their master
- 4:13in suffering. The one first of the brethren, to perish with the sword,
- 4:16the other longest of all, to endure toil and reproach and persecution.
- 4:23But to sit on my right hand and on my left, he continued,
- 4:26is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom
- 4:30it is prepared of my Father. In the Kingdom of God, position is
- 4:33not gained through favoritism. It is not earned, nor is it received through
- 4:38an arbitrary bestow It is the result of character. The crown and the throne
- 4:44are the tokens of a condition attained. They are the tokens of self conquest
- 4:47through our Lord Jesus Christ. Long afterward, when the Disciple had been brought
- 4:53into sympathy with Christ through the fellowship of his sufferings, the Lord revealed to
- 4:57John, what is the condition of nearness in his kingdom? To him that
- 5:00overcometh, Christ said, will I grant to sit with me in my throne,
- 5:04even as I also overcame and am set down with my Father and his
- 5:09throne. Him that overcometh, will I make a pillar in the temple of
- 5:13my God, and he shall go no more out, And I will write
- 5:15upon him the name of my God, and I will write upon him my
- 5:19new name. Revelation three twenty one twelve. So Paul the Apostle wrote,
- 5:26I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is
- 5:30at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course.
- 5:33I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a
- 5:36crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me
- 5:41at that day, said Timothy four six eight. The one who stands nearest
- 5:46to Christ will be he who on earth has drunk most deeply of the spirit
- 5:49of his Self. Sacrificing love. Love that vaunteth not itself, is not
- 5:55puffed up, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no
- 5:59evil. First Corinthians thirteen four or five. Love that moves the disciple,
- 6:03as it moved our Lord to give all to live in labor and sacrifice,
- 6:09even unto death, for the saving of humanity. This spirit was made manifest
- 6:14in the life of Paul. He said, for to me, to live
- 6:16is Christ, for his life revealed Christ's to men, And to die is
- 6:21gain gained to Christ. Death itself would make manifest the power of his grace
- 6:28and gather souls to him. Christ shall be magnified in my body, he
- 6:31said, whether it be by life or by death. Philippians won twenty one
- 6:38twenty. When the ten heard of the request of James and John. They
- 6:42were much displeased. The highest place in the kingdom was just what every one
- 6:46of them was seeking for himself, and they were angry that the two disciples
- 6:50had gained a seeming advantage over them. Again, the strifeest to which should
- 6:55be greatest, seemed about to be renewed. When Jesus, calling them to
- 6:58him, said to the indignant disciples, he know that they which are accounted
- 7:02to rule over the gentiles, exercise lordship over them, and their great ones
- 7:06exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you. In
- 7:12the kingdoms of the world. Position meant self aggrandizement. The people were supposed
- 7:16to exist for the benefit of the ruling classes. Influence, wealth, education,
- 7:21were so many means of gaining control of the masses for the use of
- 7:26the leaders. The higher classes were to think, decide, in joy,
- 7:30and rule. The lower were to obey and serve. Religion, like all
- 7:33things else, was a matter of authority. The people were expected to believe
- 7:38in practice as their superiors directed. The right of man as man to think
- 7:44and act for himself was wholly unrecognized. Christ was establishing a kingdom on different
- 7:49principles. He called men, not to authority, but to service the strong,
- 7:55to bear the infirmities of the weak. Power position, talent education placed
- 8:00their possessor under the greater obligation to serve his fellows. To even the lowliest
- 8:05of Christ's disciples, it is said, all things are for your sakes Second
- 8:11Corinthians four fifteen. The son of Man came not to be ministered unto,
- 8:15but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Among
- 8:18his disciples, Christ was in every sense a caretaker, a burden bearer.
- 8:24He shared their poverty, He practiced self denial on their account. He went
- 8:28before them to smooth the more difficult places, and soon he would consummate his
- 8:33work on earth by laying down his life. The principle on which Christ acted
- 8:37is to actuate the members of the Church, which is his body. The
- 8:41plan and ground of salvation is love. In the Kingdom of Christ, those
- 8:46are greatest who follow the example he is given and act as shepherds of his
- 8:50flock. The words of Paul reveal the true dignity and honor of the Christian
- 8:54life. Though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself
- 8:58servant unto all not seeking mine? Own prophet, but the prophet of many,
- 9:03that they may be saved. First Corinthians nine nineteen ten thirty three.
- 9:09In matters of conscience, the soul must be left untrammeled. No one is
- 9:13to control another's mind, to judge for another, or to prescribe his duty.
- 9:18God gives to every soul freedom to think and to follow his own convictions.
- 9:24Every one of us shall give account of himself to God. No one
- 9:28has a right to merge his own individuality in that of another. In all
- 9:31matters where principle is involved, Let every man be fully persuaded in his own
- 9:35mind Romans fourteen twelve and five. In Christ's kingdom there is no lordly oppression,
- 9:43no compulsion of manner. The angels of heaven do not come to the
- 9:46earth to rule and to exact homage, but as messengers of mercy, to
- 9:52cooperate with men in uplifting humanity. The principles and the very words of the
- 9:56Saviour's teaching in their divine beauty dwelt in the memory of the beloved Disciple to
- 10:01his latest days. The burden of John's testimony to the churches was this is
- 10:07the message that she heard from the beginning that we should love one another.
- 10:11Hereby perceive we the love of God, because He laid down his life for
- 10:15us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. First
- 10:18John three eleven sixteen. This was the spirit that pervaded the Early Church after
- 10:24the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The multitude of them that believed were of
- 10:28one heart and of one soul. Neither said any of them that aught of
- 10:31the things which he possessed was his own. Neither was there any among them
- 10:35that lacked. And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of
- 10:39the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all Acts four thirty two,
- 10:45thirty four, thirty three, end of Chapter sixty
