- 0:02Randy Black: Randy Black.
- 0:04Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. Black. Black. Black. He's a troublemaker. Welcome back to Randy Unscripted. I'm your host, Randy Black, and this is the podcast where
- 0:14I infrequently
- 0:16share something that's just come across my mind. And today,
- 0:20I wanna share something that I've been thinking about lately, and that's a a very specific
- 0:25word.
- 0:27That word
- 0:28is remarkable.
- 0:30Honestly, it's been on my mind because of a friend of mine, Dave Jackson.
- 0:34Dave is a podcast hall of fame inductee, and he is the voice behind the school of podcasting.
- 0:40And he's been talking lately a lot about creating
- 0:44what he calls remarkable content, and and I get it. I get what he means.
- 0:49He's talking about content that stands out,
- 0:52content that that makes people lean in,
- 0:55content that makes someone say,
- 0:58wow.
- 0:59That was totally worth my time.
- 1:02And in the podcasting space, that is a worthy goal.
- 1:06Nobody
- 1:07wants to create forgettable content.
- 1:10Nobody sets out to be average.
- 1:14We wanna make something that matters.
- 1:18But as I've listened to that word,
- 1:22remarkable.
- 1:24It's made me stop,
- 1:26and it's made me think.
- 1:29Because when we hear that word,
- 1:31we almost automatically
- 1:33assume
- 1:34that it's positive.
- 1:37We say things like, that was a remarkable achievement,
- 1:41or she's a remarkable leader,
- 1:43or what a remarkable recovery.
- 1:47It sounds like praise,
- 1:51but that's not actually what the word
- 1:54means.
- 1:57At its core, remarkable simply means
- 2:00worthy of being remarked upon.
- 2:04It means something stands out.
- 2:09Something
- 2:10grabs attention.
- 2:12Something is noticeable enough that people want to talk about it.
- 2:18That's it.
- 2:20It doesn't
- 2:21automatically mean good.
- 2:24It doesn't
- 2:25automatically mean admirable.
- 2:28It just
- 2:29means
- 2:31memorable.
- 2:34And that's where things for me start to get interesting
- 2:37because something can be remarkable for two very different
- 2:42reasons.
- 2:43It can be
- 2:45breathtakingly
- 2:46good,
- 2:48or it can be
- 2:50astonishingly
- 2:51bad.
- 2:53A remarkable act of generosity,
- 2:56a remarkable innovation,
- 2:59a remarkable comeback,
- 3:02but also
- 3:04a remarkable failure,
- 3:07a remarkable scandal,
- 3:10a remarkable collapse,
- 3:13a remarkable
- 3:14lack of judgment.
- 3:19Plane crashes are remarkable.
- 3:22Public meltdowns
- 3:24are remarkable.
- 3:26Historic
- 3:27mistakes
- 3:28are remarkable.
- 3:30They stand out.
- 3:33They get talked about.
- 3:36They refuse to blend into the background.
- 3:40They are remarkable
- 3:42not because they're admirable,
- 3:45but because they're unforgettable.
- 3:48So when we talk about making
- 3:50remarkable content or or building
- 3:53a remarkable career or or living a remarkable life,
- 3:58I think there's an assumption that's built in.
- 4:01We assume
- 4:03remarkable
- 4:04equals excellent,
- 4:08but
- 4:08culture
- 4:09shows us
- 4:11something that's different.
- 4:13In a world today that's driven by clicks, by outrage, and and by algorithms,
- 4:19you could become remarkable
- 4:21by being extreme,
- 4:24by being controversial,
- 4:26by being loud, by being dramatic,
- 4:29and that right there,
- 4:31that raises attention
- 4:33for me.
- 4:35Because being remarkable isn't the same thing as being meaningful.
- 4:39Being viral isn't the same thing as being virtuous.
- 4:44Being noticed
- 4:45isn't the same thing
- 4:47as being noble.
- 4:50And I don't think that Dave means any of that when he talks about remarkable content.
- 4:56I think he means excellent,
- 4:58impactful,
- 4:59helpful,
- 5:02but the word itself carries more weight than we sometimes realize.
- 5:07And if I'm honest,
- 5:09I've had some remarkable moments in my life,
- 5:13some that I'm proud of,
- 5:16some I wish
- 5:17fewer people remembered,
- 5:20but both kinds
- 5:22get talked about.
- 5:24Both kinds
- 5:25leave a mark.
- 5:28So maybe the better question isn't just
- 5:31how do I become remarkable?
- 5:35Maybe the better question is what do I want to be remarkable for?
- 5:41Because one way or another,
- 5:43we will stand out.
- 5:46The only question is whether it will be because we were extraordinarily
- 5:49good
- 5:51or just extraordinarily
- 5:53noticeable.
- 5:56Thank you for listening to this episode of Randy Unscripted. I'm Randy Black, and this is the show where I just kinda share my thoughts on whatever's crossed my mind. I hope you will continue to check out the show as episodes come out even as infrequent as they are and maybe even consider throwing some support, for the show my way. Every episode of the show on the website, and there's a and the the website the page on the website itself for the show has links there that you can provide some support to the show, and that would be greatly appreciated.
- 6:25When I'll be back, I don't know, but I can tell you one thing. It'll definitely be Randy,
- 6:30and it'll definitely be unscripted.
