- 0:00The Tabernacle for Moses, the temple for us today.
- 0:04It's all about coming into the presence of God.
- 0:08It's a reminder that Jesus Christ needs to be at the very
- 0:11center of our lives. God knows your name, there is no
- 0:16doubt about that. God guides us at each stage in
- 0:19our journey. Jesus Christ is the true
- 0:22Tabernacle. He has come to dwell or
- 0:24Tabernacle among us. Friends, today we're going to be
- 0:33exploring several stories from Exodus, and we're going to be in
- 0:36the second-half, chapters 19 through 40.
- 0:39And I think normally when people think about these chapters in
- 0:42the book of Exodus, they remember the story of the 10
- 0:45commandments. Recently I saw this meme back in
- 0:48my day, Moses said we had tablets too.
- 0:50They were made of stone and filled with commandments.
- 0:52That's my kind of tablets. I also found this comic.
- 0:56It has someone saying to Moses, I like the idea of Moses, but
- 0:59simply calling them the 10 commandments won't help them go
- 1:02viral. How about 10 things you're doing
- 1:04wrong and you won't believe number six?
- 1:08Today we are going to talk about the 10 commandments, but that's
- 1:10only one part of the story in these chapters.
- 1:13We're going to see today how God is trying to help the people at
- 1:16Sinai become kings and Queens, priests and priestesses, and how
- 1:22He's trying to do that with us today.
- 1:24We'll see not only commandments, we'll also see covenants and
- 1:28connections between the Tabernacle and modern temples.
- 1:31We're going to do this by walking through 6 scenes, each
- 1:35of which is part of an unfolding story.
- 1:37Let's begin with a Kingdom of priests and priestesses.
- 1:42In Exodus chapter 19, God told Moses to say to the Israelites,
- 1:46If you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be My
- 1:50treasured possession out of all the peoples.
- 1:53Indeed, the whole earth is mine, but you shall be for me a
- 1:57priestly Kingdom and a holy nation.
- 2:00So the entire earth belongs to God.
- 2:02He lives all of his children. But the Israelites are separated
- 2:05out to be a distinct people of priestly Kingdom, a holy nation.
- 2:11Now, originally, the plan was for Israel to receive the
- 2:13ordinances of the Melchizedek priesthood and to prepare to
- 2:17enter into God's presence. But something didn't quite work.
- 2:20The Church's Scripture helps Manual says Latter Day
- 2:23Revelation clarifies that the Lord had intended for the
- 2:26ordinances of the Melchizedek priesthood to play an important
- 2:30role in the Israelites becoming a Kingdom of priests and a holy
- 2:34nation that could behold the face of God.
- 2:36However, because of the children of Israel's hard hearts, the
- 2:41Lord withdrew the Melchizedek priesthood while the Lesser
- 2:45Ironic priesthood remained. So although the Israelites in
- 2:48the time of Moses didn't become a priestly Kingdom, God's goal
- 2:52of having a Kingdom of priests remains to this day.
- 2:56In fact, the Scripture helps, Manuel continues, saying the
- 2:59Prophet Joseph Smith spoke of establishing a Kingdom of
- 3:02priests in our dispensation that would consist of men and women
- 3:07who had made covenants with God in the House of the Lord.
- 3:10Those who inherit the celestial Kingdom are called priests and
- 3:14kings, Queens and priestesses. So even though the Israelites
- 3:18didn't become the priestly nation at Sinai, God didn't give
- 3:22up on them. Instead, he met the people where
- 3:25they were and gave them what they were ready to receive.
- 3:29So that takes us to the 10 commandments.
- 3:32Now, if I were to ask you right now to name all 10 commandments
- 3:36in order, could you do it? I remember being a young
- 3:39missionary, and someone asked me if I could tell them what the 10
- 3:42commandments were. I was so embarrassed because I
- 3:45couldn't name the 10 commandments.
- 3:46And I found that if people know the 10 commandments, it's
- 3:49usually because they've learned some finger motions that can
- 3:52help them remember. All right, so let's practice
- 3:54together. 10 commandments first, hold up one finger.
- 3:56This is 1 God. That's the first commandment.
- 3:58One God. No other gods before me #2 Make
- 4:01a little ram. No graven images #3 Hold up
- 4:06three fingers. Thou shall not take the name of
- 4:08God in vain. Commandment #4 Two and two.
- 4:14Put them together. Make a little steeple.
- 4:16Honor the Sabbath day. 5th Commandment.
- 4:20You have two parents, 3 kids. Honor your father and mother.
- 4:24I don't want to see any of this. That's not the commandment.
- 4:27Just honor your father and mother.
- 4:29Number six. Thou shall not kill #7 Over
- 4:34here, these two or this is a happily married couple.
- 4:37Thou shalt not commit adultery that could split apart a
- 4:40marriage #8 Watch carefully. It's like a magic trick.
- 4:43Thou shalt not steal, You see what happens.
- 4:46Thou shalt not steal #9 Thou shalt not bear false witness and
- 4:51#10 Gimme, Gimme, Gimme. Thou shalt not covet.
- 4:55It's so easy if you can just remember these hand signals,
- 4:58practice them, teach them to someone else.
- 4:59Later today, you'll be amazed at how easy it is to remember the
- 5:0210 commandments. Now, we've actually been talking
- 5:04about the 10 commandments already.
- 5:05You remember back when we were discussing the story of Joseph
- 5:08and Potiphar's wife, we examined Thou shalt not commit adultery.
- 5:13And in the future class, when we come to the book of Deuteronomy,
- 5:16we'll see the 10 commandments again and look at some of them
- 5:19in greater depth. But today I want to focus on the
- 5:223rd commandment. Do you remember what's the third
- 5:24commandment? Don't take the name of God in
- 5:27vain. I love what Elder Renlin taught
- 5:30about this. He said at baptism and when we
- 5:33partake of the sacrament, we witness that we are willing to
- 5:35take on ourselves the name of Jesus Christ.
- 5:38In this context, let us be mindful of the Old Testament
- 5:41commandment. Thou shalt not take the name of
- 5:44the Lord thy God in vain. To our modern ears, this sounds
- 5:48like a prohibition against irreverently using the Lords
- 5:51name. The commandment includes that,
- 5:53but its injunction is even more profound.
- 5:57The Hebrew word translated as take means to lift up or carry
- 6:01as one would a banner that identifies oneself with an
- 6:04individual or group. The word translated as vain
- 6:08means empty or deceptive. The commandment to not take the
- 6:12Lord's name in vain can thus mean you should not identify
- 6:16yourself as a disciple of Jesus Christ unless you intend to
- 6:21represent him well. In other words, we might say
- 6:23that to take God's name upon us is to act as his representatives
- 6:28in the world, in a sense, to be his priests and priestesses,
- 6:32leaders in his Kingdom. So consider this statement from
- 6:36Elder Remnant. You should not identify yourself
- 6:39as a disciple of Jesus Christ unless you intend to represent
- 6:44him well. What do you think?
- 6:45How could we apply this principle in our lives today?
- 6:49Well, as someone who has dealt with perfectionism before, this
- 6:52could to my perfectionist self, that would be like, well, if you
- 6:55don't intend to just go all in, then don't go.
- 6:58But this made me think of when President Ogdor said then if we
- 7:03are measuring ourselves like against the perfect Savior and
- 7:06say that we failed, then we are all hypocrites.
- 7:09But I don't think that is what the message here.
- 7:13The message is if I am, if my heart and if I am willing to be
- 7:18with the Savior even in my imperfect attempts, as long as
- 7:22I'm honest and I'm trying and I'm holding on and looking to
- 7:26the Savior even when I make mistakes, then I think I'm doing
- 7:30well here. And and not trying to go into
- 7:33toxic perfectionism and say if I didn't do it perfectly, then why
- 7:37should I do it. That's not a reason to stay away
- 7:40from God. And that has been really helpful
- 7:42for me. That's a great perspective.
- 7:45Here's I think about my life. I have a little frame around my
- 7:47license plate that says Jesus wins.
- 7:50I just like to have that reminder.
- 7:52But then I consider my driving habits and sometimes I'm a
- 7:55pretty aggressive driver and there might be some people
- 7:57driving around me that are like, I don't want to be Christian
- 7:59because I've seen the way this guy drives.
- 8:01So I need to do a better job of representing Jesus Christ and
- 8:05how I drive. Now, the 10 commandments are
- 8:07definitely important, and I think it's good to know all the
- 8:09finger signs. But what really counts is if the
- 8:12commandments are written in our hearts.
- 8:15And God wants more than just commandments for us.
- 8:17He wants covenants. He wants a deeper relationship
- 8:20with us. And in the ancient world,
- 8:22covenants weren't created by signing a form or a handshake.
- 8:27They were sealed with blood. So that takes us to our next
- 8:31scene, the blood of the covenant.
- 8:33This is a story that we sometimes skip because it's
- 8:35pretty graphic. Let me show you a picture that I
- 8:38never saw in Primary. This is an actual depiction of
- 8:41what's taking place in Exodus chapter 24.
- 8:45Shortly after Moses received the 10 commandments, he wrote the
- 8:48words down and he built an altar.
- 8:51He gathered some young man who sacrificed oxen, and Moses took
- 8:55half of the blood and put it in basins, and half the blood he
- 8:59sprinkled on the altar. So remember half the blood on
- 9:02the altar, half the blood in the basins.
- 9:05Then Moses took the book of the covenant and read it in the
- 9:07audience of the people, and they said all that the Lord has said
- 9:11we will do and be obedient. Then Moses took the blood from
- 9:14the basins and sprinkled it on the people.
- 9:17That's the moment that you're seeing depicted in that image
- 9:20there and said, behold the blood of the covenant which the Lord
- 9:26hath made with you. So notice how Moses takes half
- 9:29the blood, puts it on the altar representing God, and then the
- 9:33other half is thrown on the people.
- 9:35So this is showing how in a sense the people in God now have
- 9:39a blood relationship. They're deeply connected in this
- 9:43covenant. Now keep your eyes on the phrase
- 9:45blood of the covenant. I want to take us to two cross
- 9:49references. First, let's go forward several
- 9:52centuries to about the year 600 BC with the prophet Jeremiah.
- 9:56The Lord tells Jeremiah, the days will come that I will make
- 10:01a new covenant with the House of Israel, not according to the
- 10:05covenant I made with their fathers.
- 10:07And the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the
- 10:10land of Egypt, which my covenant they break.
- 10:15So there's the old covenant. That's what we've been reading
- 10:17about. Now the Lord says there's going
- 10:19to be a new covenant. Let's flush forward a few more
- 10:22centuries to the Last Supper. Here we read Jesus took a cup
- 10:26and after giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying,
- 10:29drink from it all of you. For this is my blood of the new
- 10:34covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of
- 10:39sins. Can you see what's happening
- 10:41here? There was an old covenant made
- 10:43with blood that the people broke.
- 10:45Now as Jesus institutes the sacrament, he says, this is my
- 10:49blood of the new covenant that I will shed for you.
- 10:53Remember that in the scriptures anytime it talks about blood
- 10:56being shed, it's not talking about bleeding.
- 10:59That's a reference to death. Think about our modern sacrament
- 11:02prayers. We read, Oh God the Eternal
- 11:05Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son Jesus Christ, to
- 11:08bless and sanctify this water to the souls of all those who drink
- 11:12of it, that they may do it in remembrance of the blood of thy
- 11:16Son which was shed for them. So the blood that's being
- 11:20sprinkled at Sinai, it's a shadow.
- 11:22It's a type pointing forward to the blood that Jesus Christ
- 11:26would shed for us on the cross. You know, we don't sprinkle
- 11:29blood on ourselves today, but we are in a sense covered with the
- 11:34blood of Jesus Christ through his atonement.
- 11:37And so as we remember Christ's blood that was shed on the
- 11:39cross, Christ strengthens us to keep the covenants that we've
- 11:43made. But unfortunately, in the story
- 11:45of the Exodus, the people are not able to always remember
- 11:49Jesus Christ. They stumble in their covenant
- 11:51keeping. And that takes us to the story
- 11:53of the golden calf. So after sprinkling blood on the
- 11:56people, Moses went up to Mount Sinai to receive more
- 11:59revelations from the Lord. But he's gone for a long time.
- 12:03So the people start to wonder what's going on.
- 12:05The people said to Aaron, come, make gods for us.
- 12:08Who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who
- 12:11brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has
- 12:14become of him. I mean, in a way, this is kind
- 12:16of a confusing verse, right? Just recently they had
- 12:19covenanted to keep all of God's commandments, including no
- 12:23graven images. And now they're like, please,
- 12:25please make us a graven image. And you would think that Aaron
- 12:28would say, no, absolutely not. But instead he says, OK,
- 12:31everyone, give me your gold earrings.
- 12:33And he gathers them all together and makes a golden calf for
- 12:36them. Aaron says, these are your gods,
- 12:39O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
- 12:42Tomorrow shall be a festival to the Lord.
- 12:45Now there's something really interesting happening here.
- 12:47Notice that Aaron says that tomorrow will be a feast for
- 12:50Jehovah. So he's not letting go of
- 12:53Jehovah, but he's also created this golden calf.
- 12:57Do you remember back in Exodus 3, Moses asked the Lord what his
- 13:01name was, and God said it is I am.
- 13:06Contrast that with Aaron's words here.
- 13:08These are. Do you see the difference?
- 13:11The people are turning the I am the one true God into These are
- 13:18plural worship. And this is a key danger that we
- 13:22face. We want to believe in God, but
- 13:24we want to worship something else as well.
- 13:28That's the danger of the these are.
- 13:31So the people begin to party around their golden calf.
- 13:34Moses comes down from the mountain.
- 13:35He can't believe what's happening.
- 13:37He says to Aaron, what did this people do to you that you have
- 13:40brought so great a sin upon them?
- 13:43Now go back a couple of verses and let's see what actually
- 13:47happened. We read Aaron said, bring your
- 13:51gold earrings to me. Aaron took these gold earrings
- 13:55and formed them in a mold and cast an image of a calf.
- 13:59Aaron built an altar before the calf.
- 14:02Aaron made a proclamation. Who's doing all the acting in
- 14:05these verses? It's Aaron.
- 14:07But when Aaron responds to Moses, he says, you know the
- 14:11people, they are wicked. They said to me, make gods for
- 14:16us. So I said to them, whoever has
- 14:19gold, take it off. So they gave it to me.
- 14:23I threw it into the fire and out came this calf.
- 14:26Do you notice the total lack of an active agent in what Aaron's
- 14:30saying Just threw it into the fire?
- 14:32I don't know, boom, pop down the calf.
- 14:34I have no idea how it got here. Now we can't make fun of Aaron
- 14:38too much because we probably do the same thing.
- 14:40But you can see in this passage how Aaron is totally trying to
- 14:44avoid responsibility. He's blaming.
- 14:47He's shifting the responsibility to someone else.
- 14:49I know that none of you would ever make excuses or
- 14:53rationalize, but think for a moment.
- 14:55In general, think about what Aaron's doing.
- 14:57How do people do similar things today?
- 15:01And I remember the guarding of of hearing since the very
- 15:04beginning, we are blaming another people for things that
- 15:08we do. I remember when I don't think
- 15:11the women that you gave me, if you give me another kind of
- 15:15woman, maybe more obedient, I wouldn't eat of the fruit.
- 15:21So today we just do the. Things.
- 15:24It's been a pattern since the fall in the beginning.
- 15:27Yes. Thank you.
- 15:29I think if we look deep within ourselves and if we're not right
- 15:34with God, we avoid accountability.
- 15:37We have to always be right with God and be honest with ourselves
- 15:41and take accountability for our sins or our wrongdoings.
- 15:46Always be looking inside ourselves and say I'm sorry when
- 15:50we've done something wrong. That's the beginning of
- 15:53repentance. That's the beginning of just
- 15:55taking accountability. Amen.
- 15:58In fact, Elder Dilji Renlund said something along those
- 16:01lines. He said blaming others, even if
- 16:04justified, allows us to excuse our behavior.
- 16:07By doing so, we shift responsibility for our actions
- 16:10to others. When the responsibility is
- 16:13shifted, we diminish both the need and our ability to act.
- 16:18We turn ourselves into hapless victims rather than agents
- 16:23capable of independent action. But it is so much easier to make
- 16:27an excuse right to. It feels a lot easier to say,
- 16:29oh, I couldn't, I had to, they didn't do their responsibility
- 16:33than to say, I'm sorry, I was slacking off, I'll do better
- 16:37next time. But then Elder Run then says,
- 16:39instead of making excuses, let us choose repentance.
- 16:44Now the story of the golden calf, in some ways it's pretty
- 16:46discouraging. But in the middle of it we see
- 16:49something beautiful, Moses interceding on behalf of his
- 16:53people. God's pretty upset with the
- 16:54Israelites, actually. And he tells Moses that he's
- 16:57going to destroy all the people and he's just going to start
- 16:59fresh with Moses. We're going to build a whole new
- 17:01people. But Moses says, oh Lord, why
- 17:03does your wrath burn hot against your people whom you brought out
- 17:06of the land of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand?
- 17:09Why should the Egyptian say it was with evil intent that he
- 17:13brought them out to kill them in the mountains and to consume
- 17:17them from the face of the earth? I love how Moses is trying to
- 17:20talk the Lord out of destroying the people.
- 17:22It's almost like he's acting as the PR agent for God.
- 17:25It's like, God, it's going to really ruin your reputation,
- 17:27right? The Egyptians are going to be
- 17:28like, God brought them out just to destroy.
- 17:30I'm like, what kind of God is this?
- 17:31But then comes a really tender line from Moses.
- 17:35He says, alas, this people has sinned a great sin.
- 17:39They have made for themselves gods of gold.
- 17:42But now God, if you will only forgive their sin.
- 17:46But if not, please blot me out of the book you have written.
- 17:52Here we see Moses the mediator. He loves the people so much.
- 17:56He's saying, God, I don't want to enter into your Kingdom
- 18:00without them. Please, Moses with his finite
- 18:04love is trying to intercede on the behalf of the people of
- 18:09Israel. Think about that as a shadow for
- 18:12Jesus Christ, who we know will be interceding for us with His
- 18:16infinite love at the day of judgment.
- 18:19In the doctrine incumbents, we read that Jesus Christ will be
- 18:21pleading for us. He will say to the Father,
- 18:25Father, behold the sufferings and death of him who did no sin.
- 18:29Behold the blood of thy Son. Wherefore, Father, spare these
- 18:34that believe on my name, that they may come unto me and have
- 18:38everlasting life. Now the original plan was for
- 18:42the Israelites to be able to come directly into the presence
- 18:45of God. They missed that opportunity,
- 18:48but it didn't mean that all hope was lost.
- 18:50God was still willing to meet them where they were, and that
- 18:54takes us to a significant way that the Israelites would still
- 18:57connect with the Lord. It's found in the story of the
- 19:01Tabernacle, where God would dwell among his people.
- 19:04Now, if you were to ask one, what's the main event in the
- 19:07book of Exodus, they might say it's the parting of the Red Sea.
- 19:10That's perhaps the most dramatic story in Exodus, and that takes
- 19:13up maybe two or three chapters. But the story of the Israelites
- 19:17building the Tabernacle, that takes up about 1/3 of the book
- 19:22of Exodus. And this emphasis tells us that
- 19:24the true Exodus isn't just about escaping bondage.
- 19:28It's about coming into the presence of God.
- 19:32And today we're going to focus on several aspects of the
- 19:35Tabernacle. And as we talk about these
- 19:37various elements, I hope we'll remember this key verse in
- 19:41Exodus 25, verse 8. They shall make me a sanctuary
- 19:45or Tabernacle so that I I may dwell among them.
- 19:50The Tabernacle for Moses, the temple for us today.
- 19:54It's all about coming into the presence of God.
- 19:59And so as we talked about these details with the Tabernacle,
- 20:01think about what does this mean for you in your efforts to be in
- 20:05the presence of God? Also be thinking what
- 20:07correspondences do you see between the ancient Tabernacle?
- 20:11In our modern temples today. So let's start by zooming out
- 20:15and looking at where the Tabernacle was placed within the
- 20:18camp of Israel. This is a little detail that's
- 20:21easy to glide past in the Book of Numbers, but in Numbers
- 20:24chapter 2, it's showing how the 12 tribes are organized in the
- 20:27camp. And then it says the tent of
- 20:30meeting or the Tabernacle shall be set out in the center of the
- 20:36camps. Each of the 12 tribes has a very
- 20:38specific place where they're supposed to be, and in the
- 20:41center is the Tabernacle. It's a reminder that Jesus
- 20:45Christ needs to be at the very center of our lives.
- 20:48Now let's look at the structure of the Tabernacle.
- 20:51You can see here that there's an outer courtyard.
- 20:54And then within the Tabernacle, the first room is the Holy
- 20:58place, and then there's one more room and it is the Holy of
- 21:03Holies where God's presence rests on the Ark of the
- 21:07covenant. So think about this.
- 21:09There's a three-part structure to the Tabernacle with
- 21:13increasing zones of holiness. Can you see how that relates to
- 21:18our modern temples? We progressed through areas of
- 21:20increasing holiness until we're symbolically able to enter into
- 21:25the presence of God. So I want to zoom in on each of
- 21:28these areas of the temple. Let's look first at the outer
- 21:31courtyard. Notice that there are curtains
- 21:34all around the Tabernacle. Notice how there's just one
- 21:38entrance into the Tabernacle complex.
- 21:41Perhaps this reminds us of Jesus who says I am the gate.
- 21:45No one comes to the Father except through me.
- 21:48Just one way to get inside. Now, once you're inside the
- 21:51curtained area, you're in the outer courtyard.
- 21:54And here there are two objects. First is the basin of water.
- 22:00Now, this wasn't used for baptisms.
- 22:02We read the Lord saying, you shall make a bronze basin with a
- 22:06bronze stand for washing. When Aaron and his sons go into
- 22:11the tent of meeting or when they come near the altar to minister,
- 22:15to make an offering by fire to the Lord, they shall wash with
- 22:19water. The second item in the outer
- 22:21courtyard was an altar for sacrifices.
- 22:25Any Israelite was allowed to come into the outer courtyard
- 22:29and to offer an animal for sacrifice and remember that the
- 22:33person offering the animal is the one to kill the animal.
- 22:36Today we obviously do not sacrifice animals in our temple.
- 22:40You remember that after Christ crucifixion, he said I don't
- 22:43want any more animal sacrifice, but instead I want you to give
- 22:46me the offering of a broken hearts and a contrite spirit.
- 22:50How about Elder Neil A Maxwell said about this?
- 22:54He said real personal sacrifice never was placing an animal on
- 22:59the altar. Instead, it is a willingness to
- 23:01put the animal in us upon the altar and letting it be
- 23:06consumed. Animal sacrifice was always
- 23:09pointing to Jesus Christ, the ultimate sacrifice for us.
- 23:14Today the altar in the temple points us to Jesus Christ and
- 23:19his sacrifice. Now let's zoom back and look at
- 23:21the big picture of the Tabernacle.
- 23:23So we've been in the outer courtyard, and you can see here
- 23:25that next we'll go into the Holy Place.
- 23:27And then there's another curtain that will lead into the Holy of
- 23:31Holies. Here's a model of it.
- 23:34And you can see here in this model, it's cutting away so that
- 23:37you can look into the Holy of Holies, which would have been
- 23:40completely covered by the curtain.
- 23:42So let's pause first at the Holy Place.
- 23:44Notice that there's three different objects in the Holy
- 23:48Place. Each one of these three objects
- 23:51is going to point us to Christ. The 1st is the table of
- 23:54showbread, as it's called in the King James Version or in modern
- 23:58translations, the table of the Bread of the Presence.
- 24:02The bread is there to represent the presence of God being with
- 24:06the Israelites. The Lord said, you shall set the
- 24:09bread of the presence on the table before me continually.
- 24:14So 12 loaves which represented the 12 tribes of Israel were set
- 24:18up on this table, showing that God is continually with the 12
- 24:23tribes. And these 12 loaves are changed
- 24:26out every week. As we think about the bread of
- 24:29the Presence, we can't help but remember Jesus's words.
- 24:32I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never
- 24:36be hungry. So the table of the bread of the
- 24:38presence, it's on the north side, or as you enter into the
- 24:41holy place, it's on your right. On the left is a menorah.
- 24:45God said you shall make a lampstand of pure gold, you
- 24:49shall make 7 lamps for it, and the lamps shall be set up so as
- 24:53to give light on the space in front of it.
- 24:56So this lampstand known as the Menorah, it was made out of 75
- 25:00lbs of gold and the lampstand burned all night long.
- 25:04The priest made sure that there was always light in the Holy
- 25:08place from the Noor. No darkness allowed in the Holy
- 25:11place. It reminds us of Jesus Christ
- 25:14who said I am the light of the world.
- 25:16Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness.
- 25:20Now the third item in the holy place was the altar of incense,
- 25:24and it was placed directly in front of the veil that separated
- 25:27the Holy place from the Holy of Holies.
- 25:30We read Aaron shall offer fragrant incense on it every
- 25:35morning, and in the evening he shall offered a regular incense
- 25:40offering before the Lord. Throughout your generations,
- 25:43incense was an important part of ancient Israelite worship, and
- 25:47it's actually an important part of modern worship for many
- 25:50Christians. I'm embarrassed to say this, but
- 25:52many years ago when I was younger, I went to another
- 25:54Christian Church and they were using incense and I thought, oh,
- 25:57that's so weird. But I didn't realize that they
- 26:00might come to my church and be like, you guys aren't using
- 26:03incense. Oh, that's so weird.
- 26:05Incense is an ancient worship tradition and it represents
- 26:09prayers going up to God. In the book of Psalms, we read
- 26:13Let my prayer be counted as incense before you and the
- 26:18lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice.
- 26:23Notice that prayer position. We're used to a prayer position
- 26:25of arms being folded, but here the prayer position is arms
- 26:30lifted high. Consider, too, what we read in
- 26:33the Book of Revelation. 24 elders fell before the Lamb,
- 26:37each holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the
- 26:41prayers of the Saints. It's a good reminder that some
- 26:45things, like incense, might not be a part of our worship, but
- 26:49they do have ancient connections to God.
- 26:52Now step back and look at the big picture.
- 26:54Can you see what's happening? We have priests dressed in their
- 26:58priestly clothing, saying special prayers at an altar,
- 27:02with uplifted hands in front of the veil that leads into the
- 27:06presence of God. This is what was happening in
- 27:09the ancient Tabernacle. Let's look now for a moment at
- 27:12this veil, or the curtain that separates the Holy Place from
- 27:15the Most Holy Place, or as we sometimes call it, the Holy of
- 27:18Holies. The Lord gives a specific
- 27:21account of what this veil should look like.
- 27:23He says you shall make a curtain of blue, purple, and Crimson
- 27:27yarns in a fine twisted linen. It shall be made with cherubim
- 27:31skillfully worked into it. So remember that detail.
- 27:34The cherubim are going to be specifically woven into this
- 27:38veil. The curtain shall separate for
- 27:40you the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place.
- 27:45Now behind this veil is the Holy of Holies, and in the holy of
- 27:48holies was the Ark of the Covenant.
- 27:51The Lord said they shall make an ark of Acacia wood.
- 27:54You shall put the covenant that I am giving you into the ark.
- 27:59So inside the ark goes the tablets of the law, the
- 28:02covenant. That's why it's called the Ark
- 28:04of the Covenant. Scripture also tells us that a
- 28:07jar of manna and Aaron's rod were also placed into the Ark of
- 28:11the Covenant. And on top of the ark is what's
- 28:14sometimes referred to as the Mercy Seat.
- 28:17We read. Then you shall make a cover of
- 28:19pure gold. You shall make 2 cherubim of
- 28:22gold. Make one cherub at one end and 1
- 28:25cherub at the other. The cherubim shall spread out
- 28:28their wings above, overshadowing the cover.
- 28:30With their wings they shall face one another.
- 28:32The faces of the cherubim shall be turned toward the cover.
- 28:36You shall put the cover on the top of the ark.
- 28:39There I will meet you, and from above, the cover from between
- 28:44the two cherubim that are on the Ark of the Covenant.
- 28:48This is where the presence of God was resting on the mercy
- 28:51seat, the cover on top of the Ark of the Covenant.
- 28:55So go back to those cherubim that were woven into the veil.
- 28:59Do you remember in the Garden of Eden, God sent cherubim to keep
- 29:03Adam and Eve from going to the Tree of Life?
- 29:05So here we can see these cherubim, in a sense, as
- 29:08standing as Sentinels guarding the path back to the presence of
- 29:13God in the ancient Tabernacle. Once a year on the Day of
- 29:17Atonement, the high priest would go through the veil to enter the
- 29:21Holy of Holies. Now we'll talk more about the
- 29:24Day of Atonement when we get to the book of Leviticus, but think
- 29:28for a moment about the high priest once a year being able to
- 29:31enter the presence of God by going into the Holy of Holies
- 29:35and separating everyone else from the presence of God.
- 29:38Is this curtain or veil? Do you remember what happened
- 29:42when Jesus was crucified? We read at that moment the
- 29:46curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
- 29:51So the tearing of the curtain or veil is a symbol that now
- 29:55through Christ's sacrifice, all are welcomed into the presence
- 29:58of God. Now everyone can enter into
- 30:01God's presence. The author of the book of
- 30:03Hebrews reflects on this. He writes we have confidence to
- 30:07enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living
- 30:12way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is,
- 30:17through his flesh. You might have heard that the
- 30:20veil of the temple represents Jesus Christ.
- 30:23That's what we see here in Hebrews chapter 10.
- 30:26Through Christ we're able to enter the presence of God.
- 30:29What we're seeing is Jesus Christ is central in every part
- 30:32of the Tabernacle. He's the altar, the lampstand.
- 30:36He's the bread of the Presence and He's the veil.
- 30:39In fact, Jesus is the Tabernacle itself.
- 30:42In John chapter one, verse 14, we read the Word was made flesh
- 30:48and dwelt among us. Now that might not seem like a
- 30:51lot, but I want to look at the Greek word that underlies the
- 30:54word dwelt there. And I know some of us are
- 30:56thinking, wait, I don't speak any Greek.
- 30:58Don't worry. Remember our tool, the blue
- 31:00letter Bible. This helps to see what the
- 31:03underlying Hebrew or Greek words mean.
- 31:05And the Greek word that's here translated as lived or dwelt
- 31:09among us actually has a more specific meaning.
- 31:12It means to fix one's Tabernacle, to abide or live in
- 31:17a Tabernacle or tent. So if you remember, the
- 31:20Septuagint is the Greek version of the Old Testament.
- 31:24And so when the Old Testament is translated into Greek, the same
- 31:28word that's used in John 1 is used to describe the Tabernacle.
- 31:33In other words, John is saying something like Jesus Christ is
- 31:37the true Tabernacle. He has come to dwell or
- 31:39Tabernacle among us. Now I know some of your
- 31:42thinking. Holy cow, all of these details
- 31:44about the Tabernacle. This is incredible.
- 31:46I wish I could learn more about it.
- 31:48Wish granted. My friend Daniel Smith has a
- 31:51YouTube channel called Messages of Christ and he has a series of
- 31:54videos all about the Tabernacle and their connections to the
- 31:57Savior, and they're all linked on the course website.
- 31:59But for now, it's time for one last story.
- 32:02It's the lesser known story of Bethzalel and the Holy AB and
- 32:06the sacred clothing that they create.
- 32:08So the Lord revealed to Moses some very specific instructions
- 32:11on how to build a Tabernacle and on what type of clothing the
- 32:15priest should wear, and he also raised up specific individuals
- 32:19to construct the Tabernacle. God said to Moses, See, I have
- 32:22called by name Bezalel. I have filled him with a divine
- 32:26spirit, with ability, intelligence, and knowledge, and
- 32:29every kind of skill to devise artistic designs.
- 32:33Moreover, I have appointed with him a holy AB that they may make
- 32:37all that I have commanded you. There are lots of lessons that
- 32:40we can learn from Bezalel and a holy AB.
- 32:42First, I want to focus on the beginning line.
- 32:44See, I have called by name Bezalel.
- 32:49That's a pattern in Scripture. Later we'll read God saying to
- 32:52Moses, I know you by name. You remember at the sacred Grove
- 32:57one of them spaken to me, Joseph Smith said, calling me by name.
- 33:02God knows your name. There is no doubt about that.
- 33:07In this case, God is calling Betzilel a holy AB and many
- 33:09others to help with building the Tabernacle.
- 33:12We read Moses called Betzilel and a Holy AB, and every skilled
- 33:17person to whom the Lord had given skill.
- 33:20Now you might read that and say, well, that's great for Betzel
- 33:23and Holy AB and all the skilled people, but what about me?
- 33:25I have no skills. And in my case that is literally
- 33:28true. I failed art in 6th grade.
- 33:31I quit practicing the piano when I was 14.
- 33:33Of course, I regret it like everyone else who quit
- 33:35practicing the piano when they were a teenager.
- 33:37So I guess I have nothing to offer the Lord in the creation
- 33:40process. But that's not true.
- 33:42Look at the very next phrase. The Lord also calls everyone
- 33:45whose heart was stirred to come do the work.
- 33:48It doesn't say everyone who had talents was invited to come to
- 33:51the work. It doesn't say every artistic
- 33:54person whose heart was stirred could come to the work.
- 33:56Anyone who had the desire was welcome to come build the
- 34:00Tabernacle. And it's the same for us today.
- 34:03God invites all of us to create. I love what President Uggdorf
- 34:08said. Everyone can create.
- 34:10You don't need money, position, or influence in order to create
- 34:14something of substance or beauty.
- 34:17So over the next nine months, the people were very busy
- 34:20sewing, constructing, building everything needed for the
- 34:24Tabernacle as outlined by the Lord.
- 34:26We also see that they made holy garments for Aaron as the Lord
- 34:31commanded Moses. Now notice that in this verse,
- 34:33the word garments, it means articles of clothing.
- 34:37And look at the specific articles of clothing that the
- 34:39priests would wear. We read the priests wore tunics
- 34:43or robes, sashes and caps. So you can see that the temple
- 34:49clothes we have today are patterned after the clothing
- 34:52that ancient priests wore in the temple.
- 34:54That's why our temple clothing doesn't look like modern
- 34:57clothes. It's not meant to.
- 34:59They're patterned after clothing that is thousands of years old.
- 35:02And wearing this clothing symbolically shows that we're
- 35:05becoming priests and priests, justicees, as we prepare to
- 35:09become leaders in God's Kingdom. Now, I want you to think for a
- 35:13moment about Bezalel and a holy app.
- 35:15They're working so hard to create items that are related to
- 35:18our temple worship today. But you probably never heard of
- 35:22Bezalel and a holy app. It's a reminder that often we
- 35:25labor in anonymity. There's many things like Bezalel
- 35:29and a holy app that we're doing in our lives that are also going
- 35:31to go unrecognized. Maybe we work to raise our
- 35:34children or serve in our callings, help our neighbors,
- 35:37and it's possible that nobody will recognize our efforts.
- 35:40But that doesn't mean they're not important.
- 35:43Bezalel and a holy AB Like many others in scriptures.
- 35:47They served anonymously, but God knew their name.
- 35:51You might be serving anonymously, but God knows.
- 35:56So finally the Tabernacle is complete.
- 35:58Let's go to the last chapter in the book of Exodus.
- 36:01The Lord says to Moses, Thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons
- 36:05unto the door of the Tabernacle of the congregation, and wash
- 36:09them with water. And thou shalt put upon Aaron
- 36:12the holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him.
- 36:16In the time of Moses, these ordinances were only meant for
- 36:19male priests, but it's interesting that in our day
- 36:22they've been expanded to both men and women.
- 36:25In the book Saints, we read, by revealing additional ordinances
- 36:29in the Nauvoo Temple to faithful men and women of the Church, the
- 36:34Lord would make them kings and Queens, priests and priestesses.
- 36:40So from the very beginning of the endowment ordinance in our
- 36:42day, women were washed and anointed by other women,
- 36:47beginning with Emma Smith, who was the first female temple
- 36:51worker. Sometimes people who haven't
- 36:53been endowed are surprised to learn that in the initiatory,
- 36:56females are the ones who are washing, anointing, and blessing
- 37:01other females. But it's been that way from the
- 37:02beginning of the restoration. So finally the day came when the
- 37:06Tabernacle was complete. We read.
- 37:08Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the
- 37:12Lord filled the Tabernacle. Whenever the cloud was taken up
- 37:15from the Tabernacle, the Israelites, the Knights, would
- 37:18set out on each stage of their journey.
- 37:20But if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out
- 37:24until the day that it was taken up.
- 37:27So there's a cloud, a shadow that's going to be guiding the
- 37:30Israelites on their journey, we read.
- 37:33For the cloud of the Lord was on the Tabernacle by day, and fire
- 37:38was in the cloud by night, before the eyes of all the House
- 37:42of Israel at each stage of their journey.
- 37:46I love that insight. God is guiding the Israelites
- 37:50line upon line at each stage. And I testify the same thing is
- 37:55true for us. God guides us at each stage in
- 37:58our journey. Now do you notice the
- 38:00connections between this passage here and the hymn we love to
- 38:03sing? Our shadow by day and our pillar
- 38:07by night. Our King, our deliverer are all.
- 38:10This is a reference to the Tabernacle.
- 38:12The same God who filled the Tabernacle with fire and glory
- 38:15is still inviting his people into His presence through
- 38:19covenant relationships with our Heavenly Father in Jesus Christ.
- 38:23We are preparing to become priests and priestesses.
- 38:26I love what President Kimball said in a BYU devotional.
- 38:30My beloved youth, I pray you date faithful members.
- 38:33Marry only in the holy temples of God.
- 38:35Plan your course, Chart your way, Live righteously.
- 38:39Always listen to your leaders. Read the scriptures, Pray much
- 38:43and often. Claim your throne.
- 38:45Hold tightly to the scepter. You will be priests and
- 38:49priestesses, kings and Queens, throughout all eternity.
- 38:54That is our destiny.
