- 5:28Speaker 4: Dear sir, I have some information for you about a
- 5:30Speaker 4: big dope ring. It's important I talk to you. I'll
- 5:34Speaker 4: meet you at the street car stop at seventh and
- 5:36Speaker 4: Broadway on the East Side after three forty five.
- 5:39Speaker 5: Pm tomorrow afternoon Wednesday, that's today. Uh, you know, read
- 5:43Speaker 5: the rest of it.
- 5:44Speaker 4: I can't tell you my name now, but I'll be
- 5:46Speaker 4: wearing a green skirt and a plaid sweater.
- 5:49Speaker 5: I'll be standing right by the street car stop. What
- 5:52Speaker 5: do you think? I don't know. No signature, you got
- 5:55Speaker 5: anything in the envelope?
- 5:56Speaker 4: You know it's postmarked LA, addressed a Jewil Division. No
- 6:00Speaker 4: way of telling where it came from. I think it's
- 6:02Speaker 4: from Cray. Oh there's one place we can find out, yeah,
- 6:05Speaker 4: seventh and Broadway. The fact that the note had been
- 6:12Speaker 4: addressed to Juvenile Division instead of narcotics detail indicated that
- 6:15Speaker 4: the person who wrote it had some knowledge of the
- 6:17Speaker 4: workings of the police department.
- 6:19Speaker 5: It also led us to believe that the writer was
- 6:21Speaker 5: a juvenile.
- 6:22Speaker 4: We checked again with Captain Powers on the letter, and
- 6:24Speaker 4: it was decided that we'd make the meat. That afternoon,
- 6:27Speaker 4: Frank and I spent the rest of the morning going
- 6:28Speaker 4: over reports on a case that we just finished in.
- 6:30Speaker 4: At three fifteen pm, we left the office. Frank stopped
- 6:34Speaker 4: the cart eighth then Broadway for a traffic signal, and
- 6:35Speaker 4: I got out and walked the remaining block. There was
- 6:38Speaker 4: no one at the street car stopped dressed in a
- 6:40Speaker 4: green skirt in a plaid sweater, while Frank circle the block.
- 6:43Speaker 5: I waited three forty pm, still no sign.
- 6:46Speaker 4: At three point fifty two, a woman of about twenty
- 6:48Speaker 4: three got off a street car and waited on the corner.
- 6:50Speaker 4: She was wearing a dark green suit with a plaid blouse.
- 6:53Speaker 4: I waited for some indication that she might be the
- 6:54Speaker 4: person we were waiting for, but she gave men. Finally
- 6:57Speaker 4: she turned, walked across the street and disappeared into the crowd.
- 7:01Speaker 4: Four o'clock four or fifteen, still no sign up a
- 7:03Speaker 4: letter writing four thirty quarter to five, Frank pulled into
- 7:07Speaker 4: a loading zone near the corner, and I went over
- 7:08Speaker 4: to talk to him. What do you think, Well, I
- 7:10Speaker 4: don't know. She's an hour late now, uh huh uh
- 7:13Speaker 4: noe must have been from a crank, I guess so well,
- 7:16Speaker 4: come on, get in.
- 7:16Speaker 7: We better go back to the.
- 7:17Speaker 5: Office now, He'll wait a minute.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Job.
- 7:21Speaker 5: Huh right there a crossing the street.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Oh yeah, matches the description. Let's be her now she's
- 7:27Speaker 4: looking this way, I'll check it. She looked about fifteen,
- 7:33Speaker 4: brown hair and a thin young face. She was carrying
- 7:35Speaker 4: an armful of school books. She paused in the corner
- 7:38Speaker 4: and watched me. I walked up to her and told
- 7:40Speaker 4: her I was a police officer. She nodded and then
- 7:43Speaker 4: walked out to the safety zone and climbed onto a
- 7:45Speaker 4: waiting street car.
- 7:46Speaker 5: I followed her.
- 7:47Speaker 4: She walked to the back of the car and took
- 7:49Speaker 4: a seat. I sat down next to her. I could
- 7:51Speaker 4: see Frank following us in our car. We rode three
- 7:54Speaker 4: blocks before.
- 7:55Speaker 8: She spoke, I'm sorry, I was late.
- 7:58Speaker 5: Sorry.
- 7:59Speaker 9: I usually try to be on time, maybe even a
- 8:01Speaker 9: little early. That's the way it should be, don't you think.
- 8:04Speaker 5: Well, what was it you wanted to talk about? Miss?
- 8:05Speaker 8: I got hung up at school, couldn't get away when
- 8:07Speaker 8: I thought I would. Yeah, that's the reason I'm late.
- 8:10Speaker 5: You said something in the note about a narcotics ring.
- 8:13Speaker 8: How much am I gonna get involved in this?
- 8:15Speaker 5: What do you mean, how deep am.
- 8:16Speaker 9: I gonna get? I don't want any trouble myself. We're
- 8:19Speaker 9: doing this to help somebody, but I don't wanna get
- 8:21Speaker 9: mixed up.
- 8:22Speaker 8: In it myself.
- 8:23Speaker 5: Maybe you better tell me what it's all about first. Huh.
- 8:25Speaker 5: We can decide the rest of it later.
- 8:27Speaker 8: That's the way it has to be.
- 8:29Speaker 5: Well, you called us, remember, yeah, I guess. So what's
- 8:33Speaker 5: your name?
- 8:34Speaker 8: Edna?
- 8:34Speaker 5: Is your last name?
- 8:35Speaker 8: That isn't gonna help any you don't need it.
- 8:38Speaker 5: How old are you?
- 8:39Speaker 8: Fifteen?
- 8:41Speaker 5: All right? What about this dope ring?
- 8:43Speaker 9: I wanna tell you about it. A friend of mine
- 8:46Speaker 9: is in pretty deep. I think she's hooked bad. I
- 8:48Speaker 9: wanna help her.
- 8:49Speaker 5: What's your friend's name? You have to have that or
- 8:53Speaker 5: we're not gonna be able to do very much without it, are.
- 8:55Speaker 9: We, Catherine, I can't give you a last name.
- 8:58Speaker 8: I can't. She fifteen?
- 9:02Speaker 5: All right?
- 9:02Speaker 9: Now?
- 9:02Speaker 5: What makes you think she's using narcotics?
- 9:04Speaker 8: I just know that's all.
- 9:05Speaker 5: Well, it's a pretty serious charge. You must have some
- 9:07Speaker 5: reason for saying it.
- 9:08Speaker 8: Got a reason. I've got good reasons. Do you think
- 9:10Speaker 8: i'd go to the cops if I didn't have?
- 9:11Speaker 4: You think that what kind of narcotics. Do you think
- 9:14Speaker 4: she's using heroin? You know that for sure, do you?
- 9:16Speaker 8: Yeah? I've seen her take a fix.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Where where'd she take the fix?
- 9:20Speaker 9: I've seen her do it in her room at home,
- 9:22Speaker 9: placed near school up but Lewis apartments. Louis, Lewis Conklin.
- 9:27Speaker 8: He'd got Catherine hooked. He's the one I want to
- 9:30Speaker 8: see you get.
- 9:31Speaker 5: Oh's he?
- 9:32Speaker 8: Well, I don't know. I think around twenty twenty one.
- 9:34Speaker 5: Where'd you meet him?
- 9:35Speaker 9: Down at bal Bol last summer? Katherine and me went
- 9:38Speaker 9: down for a week. We met him then Lewis and Vince.
- 9:40Speaker 5: You know this Vince's last name?
- 9:42Speaker 8: I think it's bal b e A L. I guess.
- 9:45Speaker 5: So now these two boys are they supplying Katherine with
- 9:48Speaker 5: a heroin?
- 9:49Speaker 8: Yeah? They got it for how'd you.
- 9:51Speaker 5: Happen to meet him?
- 9:52Speaker 9: First day we were down at bal Bol, we went
- 9:54Speaker 9: down to the beach.
- 9:55Speaker 8: We saw him. Then we didn't talk to him right off,
- 9:58Speaker 8: not the first day.
- 9:59Speaker 5: Uh huh.
- 10:00Speaker 9: Next day they came over to where we were and
- 10:02Speaker 9: laid down on the beach. They had a portable radio
- 10:05Speaker 9: and they were playing it loud. They were playing it
- 10:07Speaker 9: real loud. Yeah, Well, Lewis asked us if they had
- 10:11Speaker 9: the radio on too loud, and we said no.
- 10:13Speaker 8: Then we got to talking.
- 10:16Speaker 5: All right, go ahead.
- 10:17Speaker 9: We found out that they knew a lot of the
- 10:19Speaker 9: kids that go to our school, so we talked about them.
- 10:22Speaker 8: We talked and listened to the radio.
- 10:25Speaker 5: Were either you're are Catherine's parents with you?
- 10:28Speaker 9: No, Catherine's father's got a friend, elyzat Balbo all the
- 10:31Speaker 9: time we were staying with her.
- 10:33Speaker 5: All right, go ahead.
- 10:35Speaker 9: After we knew him a week, one night, they suggested
- 10:37Speaker 9: that we'd go for a ride down the coast towards
- 10:39Speaker 9: San Diego. No, they'd never given us any trouble, so
- 10:44Speaker 9: Katherine and me talked it over and.
- 10:45Speaker 8: Decided to go. They'd never gotten fresh or anything, so
- 10:48Speaker 8: we thought it'd be all right.
- 10:51Speaker 9: We drove down the beach and then we stopped. Boys
- 10:54Speaker 9: had some beer in the car, and we drank some
- 10:55Speaker 9: of it, just a little. We didn't think it would hurt,
- 10:58Speaker 9: just a little, all right. I guess we'd drank more
- 11:02Speaker 9: than we thought, cause we both got a little drunk.
- 11:05Speaker 9: First time I ever got drunk. All I wanted to
- 11:08Speaker 9: do was go home and go to sleep. That's all
- 11:09Speaker 9: I wanted to do. I didn't feel good. I remember
- 11:11Speaker 9: that I didn't feel good. Go ahead, I got out
- 11:15Speaker 9: of the car and I walked around for a while.
- 11:18Speaker 9: After I walked, I felt better and I went back
- 11:19Speaker 9: to the car. Katherine and the two boys were smoking.
- 11:22Speaker 9: I could smell it when I got in the car.
- 11:24Speaker 5: Real sweet, sickening marijuana.
- 11:26Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 11:27Speaker 9: Vince asked me if I wanted some. I told him
- 11:30Speaker 9: I didn't. They all laughed again, said I was just
- 11:32Speaker 9: a little kid, called me chicken. So I did you
- 11:36Speaker 9: smoked the marijuana, did J Yeah, but not very much.
- 11:39Speaker 9: Got sick again. I threw the stick away. That made
- 11:42Speaker 9: Vince sore because I hadn't smoked very much. He got
- 11:45Speaker 9: out of the car and found it was left of
- 11:46Speaker 9: the cigarette and put it in a box he had.
- 11:48Speaker 9: Then he got in the car and the three of
- 11:50Speaker 9: 'em all drank some more of the beer and smoked
- 11:52Speaker 9: the rest.
- 11:52Speaker 8: Of the marijuana. They were all laughing and yelling.
- 11:56Speaker 5: Katherine was smoking too.
- 11:57Speaker 8: Yes, she was having a great time laughing it up.
- 12:00Speaker 8: Seemed like everything that happened was just about the funniest
- 12:02Speaker 8: thing she ever heard.
- 12:04Speaker 9: They were all laughing and telling me what a square
- 12:06Speaker 9: I was. Finally, I couldn't stand it any more. So
- 12:09Speaker 9: I said, if they wouldn't take.
- 12:10Speaker 8: Me home, i'd walk. And what'd they say to that
- 12:13Speaker 8: told me to go ahead? Said I was a drag anyway,
- 12:16Speaker 8: and they'd be glad to get rid of me.
- 12:17Speaker 5: And you left them? Yeah.
- 12:19Speaker 8: I tried to get Catherine to go with me.
- 12:21Speaker 9: She said she was having too good a time and
- 12:22Speaker 9: she wasn't leaving. She told me to go home and
- 12:25Speaker 9: to expect her when she walked in.
- 12:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:28Speaker 8: So I left, got out of the car and walked
- 12:31Speaker 8: up the highway.
- 12:32Speaker 9: It was gonna catch her ride back to town. Pretty scared,
- 12:35Speaker 9: but I wanted to get back. I didn't feel very good.
- 12:38Speaker 9: I waited for the car, but the ones that went
- 12:40Speaker 9: by wouldn't stop. Then Vincent Lewis and Catherine came by.
- 12:44Speaker 9: They told me to get into the car and we
- 12:45Speaker 9: drove home. I had to wait out in front with
- 12:47Speaker 9: Catherine until she sobered up. Said she was too drunk
- 12:50Speaker 9: to go into the house.
- 12:52Speaker 5: What time did you get home?
- 12:53Speaker 8: Oh, must have been three or three thirty mm.
- 12:56Speaker 5: Did you see Vincent Lewis again?
- 12:58Speaker 8: Oh?
- 12:58Speaker 9: I didn't, but Catherine did. Every night we were there,
- 13:01Speaker 9: she went out with him. I didn't want to have
- 13:03Speaker 9: anything more to do with 'em. She told me if
- 13:06Speaker 9: I said anything to the people we were staying with,
- 13:08Speaker 9: she'd caused me a lot of trouble. I like Catherine,
- 13:11Speaker 9: she's my best friend. I didn't want to see her
- 13:13Speaker 9: get into any trouble.
- 13:15Speaker 8: Thought when we left Balboa she'd quit seeing the fellows.
- 13:19Speaker 8: That's what I thought she'd stop seeing.
- 13:22Speaker 5: Did she no?
- 13:24Speaker 9: When school started again, she was still goin be flew Us.
- 13:27Speaker 9: I'd see her around the school, but she wouldn't have
- 13:29Speaker 9: anything to do with me, said I was a cube,
- 13:32Speaker 9: talking all the time about how she didn't know they
- 13:34Speaker 9: grew corners like me any more.
- 13:36Speaker 5: How'd you find out she was on Heroin?
- 13:37Speaker 8: One day?
- 13:38Speaker 9: I saw her take a pop. She was at her house,
- 13:40Speaker 9: and I came over to talk to her. She was
- 13:42Speaker 9: pretty sick and she went into her room. I went
- 13:44Speaker 9: in after her to see if I could help, and
- 13:46Speaker 9: I saw her takin a fix. After that, I didn't
- 13:49Speaker 9: see much of her. I guess she didn't want me
- 13:51Speaker 9: around knowing she was hooked. When was all us about
- 13:54Speaker 9: two months ago. I've seen our couple of times since.
- 13:57Speaker 9: She looks real bad.
- 13:59Speaker 5: Her parents know anything about the narcotics.
- 14:00Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 14:01Speaker 9: There's just your father. I don't think he cares much.
- 14:04Speaker 9: If he does, he's not doing anything about it. I'm
- 14:08Speaker 9: just telling you all this so you'll get Lewis and Vince.
- 14:10Speaker 9: They're the ones who started her. They're seeing that she
- 14:13Speaker 9: gets the aide.
- 14:14Speaker 5: You know where we can find him.
- 14:15Speaker 9: Yeah, Lewis has a little apartment over in the west
- 14:18Speaker 9: Lake area.
- 14:19Speaker 5: You know the address?
- 14:20Speaker 9: No, but I can show you where it is, all right.
- 14:22Speaker 9: I just want to see you get them, get them good.
- 14:25Speaker 9: She was my best friend, or she won't have anything.
- 14:28Speaker 8: To do with me nothing.
- 14:29Speaker 5: I may wait and straighten it out.
- 14:31Speaker 8: What do you want to do now, Well, first we.
- 14:33Speaker 4: Better get off the street car hm end of the line.
- 14:42Speaker 4: Edna and I got off the street car and Frank
- 14:43Speaker 4: picked us up. We stopped at a drugstore and put
- 14:45Speaker 4: in a call to the office requesting that a police woman.
- 14:47Speaker 5: Be sent out to take the girl into custody.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Ten minutes later, off Sir Irene Gardner arrived and the
- 14:52Speaker 4: four of us drove over to the west Lake area.
- 14:55Speaker 4: The young girl pointed out the building where she told
- 14:56Speaker 4: us that Vince Bale and Lewis Conklin lived she gave
- 14:59Speaker 4: us a description of the two suspects, and finally, after
- 15:02Speaker 4: miss Gardner had talked to her, she also gave us
- 15:04Speaker 4: the full name of her friend, Catherine Pilgrim. We checked
- 15:07Speaker 4: at the building and found that the two suspects occupied
- 15:09Speaker 4: apartment four G. Frank and I talked to the manager
- 15:12Speaker 4: of the place, but she told us that the pair
- 15:14Speaker 4: weren't in and that she didn't know when they'd be back.
- 15:17Speaker 4: We returned to the car and told Officer Gardener to
- 15:19Speaker 4: take edd In to Georgia Street Juvenile and hold her
- 15:20Speaker 4: until we could get there. After that, Frank called the
- 15:23Speaker 4: office and ran the names Vincent Bale and Lewis Concklin
- 15:26Speaker 4: through R and I. They both had misdemeanor records in California,
- 15:29Speaker 4: and Beale had served time in the County jail for
- 15:31Speaker 4: possession of narcotics. We called Captain Powers and told him
- 15:34Speaker 4: what had happened, and then we returned to the apartment
- 15:36Speaker 4: and set up a surveillance. At seven twenty five pm,
- 15:39Speaker 4: we heard someone coming down the hall.
- 15:46Speaker 5: Don't worry about a thing, who needs to all to
- 15:48Speaker 5: be all.

- 16:22Speaker 5: Violation of the Narcotics Acting contributing?
- 16:24Speaker 6: Yeah, you didn't find anything on me. You didn't find
- 16:26Speaker 6: anything in the pad. You've been on a spike, cop,
- 16:28Speaker 6: and you know it. I why don't you run along?
- 16:29Speaker 6: And I forget all about you being all right?
- 16:31Speaker 5: Let's go. Where are you taking downtown? To Jai Hall?
- 16:34Speaker 5: You can call my father, that's right.
- 16:36Speaker 8: Well, he won't tell you anything.
- 16:37Speaker 9: You won't tell you give my shut why I got
- 16:39Speaker 9: nothing to hide?
- 16:39Speaker 8: I'm not a HiPE. You ask my father.
- 16:41Speaker 4: Let me see your arms, veil, huh, your sleeves, roll
- 16:43Speaker 4: them up? Come on quick here, where'd you get those marks?
- 16:48Speaker 4: You tell me you see your arms, Miss Pilgrim.
- 16:50Speaker 8: It's not gonna prove anything, not a sense.
- 16:52Speaker 5: You see him.
- 16:53Speaker 6: Go ahead, honey, if you don't go along with him
- 16:54Speaker 6: to bring out the rubber hose.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Somebody messed with you a long time ago. Come on this, Pilgrim,
- 16:58Speaker 4: let me see your arms.
- 17:00Speaker 8: Well, all right here, how.
- 17:03Speaker 5: About it, Joe, think a look?
- 17:07Speaker 4: Yeah, fresh needle marks. We called a narcotics division and
- 17:15Speaker 4: asked them to come out and go over the room
- 17:16Speaker 4: in an attempt to find a trace of narcotics. We
- 17:19Speaker 4: put in a call to the office and Irene Gardner
- 17:20Speaker 4: came out and took the Pilgrim girl.
- 17:22Speaker 5: In the custody. The stakeout was set up on the
- 17:24Speaker 5: apartment to apprehend the other suspect.
- 17:25Speaker 4: Lewis Conklin, Frank and I took Vince Bial to the
- 17:28Speaker 4: office and questioned him for over an hour, but he
- 17:30Speaker 4: failed to come up.
- 17:31Speaker 5: With his source of supply for the heroin.
- 17:33Speaker 4: He was turned over to officers from Narcotics Detail and
- 17:35Speaker 4: booked in at the main jail and suspicion the violation
- 17:37Speaker 4: of the State.
- 17:38Speaker 5: Narcotic Act, a felony.
- 17:40Speaker 4: The call had been put into the father of Catherine Pilgrim,
- 17:42Speaker 4: and at nine thirty seven pm he arrived at the.
- 17:44Speaker 7: Office Friday and Smith. Where at?
- 17:48Speaker 5: My name's Friday. What can I do for you?
- 17:50Speaker 7: I'm Robert Pilgrim. I want my daughter.
- 17:52Speaker 4: She's downstairs right now, a doctor's taking care of her.
- 17:54Speaker 4: What for, Well, she's pretty sick, mister Pilgrim, sick?
- 17:57Speaker 7: What's the matter?
- 17:58Speaker 10: You've gotten a right to give her any kind of
- 17:59Speaker 10: medication without my approval.
- 18:00Speaker 5: We couldn't reach you.
- 18:01Speaker 4: How hard did you try? We called your home and
- 18:03Speaker 4: your place of business. We got no answer. Our doctor
- 18:06Speaker 4: thought it was best to give the girl something right away.
- 18:07Speaker 7: What's wrong with it? What are you doing to her?
- 18:09Speaker 5: Your daughter's a narcotic addeguist, Pilgrim.
- 18:11Speaker 7: That is a lie. Now you get her up here
- 18:13Speaker 7: right now. You hear me. You get on that phone
- 18:15Speaker 7: and have I brought this office right now? I'm taking
- 18:16Speaker 7: her home.
- 18:17Speaker 5: Afraid we can't do that.
- 18:18Speaker 10: Will you to tell me what's gonna happen? I pay
- 18:20Speaker 10: you a salary officer don't forget it if you don't
- 18:23Speaker 10: get on that phone and have my daughter brought up
- 18:24Speaker 10: here right now. I'll make some calls and you'll be
- 18:26Speaker 10: pounding the beat out in the tooleys. I've got a
- 18:28Speaker 10: lot of friends in this town, and you've got a
- 18:29Speaker 10: daughter who's hooked bad. As she told you that. No, sir,
- 18:32Speaker 10: but all the test point that way. She's got needle
- 18:34Speaker 10: marks all up and down.
- 18:34Speaker 5: Aron.
- 18:35Speaker 10: Well, you better get out and find a lawyer fast,
- 18:36Speaker 10: because I'm gonna pull that ten bads right off because
- 18:38Speaker 10: that's so you bet it is.
- 18:40Speaker 7: How do I get a line?
- 18:42Speaker 5: Dial NAE?
- 18:53Speaker 10: Hello, Jackets? Is Bob Pilgrim. I'm down at the police station. Yeah,
- 18:57Speaker 10: Kathy's here. The cop says she's a hophead. I want
- 19:00Speaker 10: you to tell him here.
- 19:02Speaker 7: You talk to.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Him, Yes, sir, Who am I speaking with?
- 19:07Speaker 5: M hm?
- 19:09Speaker 4: Yes, sir, Yes sir. Well we did find hypodermic marks.
- 19:16Speaker 4: I see all right, sir. We'll be checking with you now.
- 19:21Speaker 4: You'll get my daughter.
- 19:23Speaker 5: I'll ever sent right up. I want malcohol, frank. Yeah,
- 19:32Speaker 5: who do you call? Is a family doctor? We might
- 19:35Speaker 5: not have a case here. What's the matter?
- 19:37Speaker 4: Well, the doctor says he's been treating the girl for
- 19:39Speaker 4: the past six months. Yeah, been giving her hypodermic injections.
- 19:51Speaker 2: You are listening to Dragnet, the authentic story of your
- 19:54Speaker 2: police force and action.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Tobacco has been one of man's basic pleasures. Were over
- 20:00Speaker 1: four hundred years and the Chesterfields you smoke today are
- 20:04Speaker 1: the best cigarettes ever made. And when I say that,
- 20:07Speaker 1: I mean Chesterfield Regular, I mean Chesterfield King Size. Remember
- 20:13Speaker 1: this is the cigarette that's tested and approved by thirty
- 20:16Speaker 1: years of scientific tobacco research. The cigarette that gives you
- 20:20Speaker 1: proof of highest quality, low nicotine, the taste you want,
- 20:25Speaker 1: the mildness you want, the cigarette that has an established
- 20:29Speaker 1: good record with smokers, proven by test after test. Yes, friends,
- 20:34Speaker 1: the Chesterfields you smoke today are the best cigarettes ever made.
- 20:40Speaker 1: So join the thousands now changing to Chesterfield Regular or
- 20:45Speaker 1: King Size, always say Chesterfields for me.
- 20:58Speaker 4: With a doctor's statement, that was no thing we could
- 21:00Speaker 4: do but release the girl to her father, pending for
- 21:02Speaker 4: their investigation. The parents of the teenager who had written
- 21:05Speaker 4: us the first letter came to the office and she
- 21:07Speaker 4: was released to them. At eleven forty pm that night,
- 21:10Speaker 4: we got word that the other suspect had returned to
- 21:12Speaker 4: the apartment and had been taken into custody. It was
- 21:15Speaker 4: identified as Lewis Conklin, aged twenty three, and was taken
- 21:18Speaker 4: to the main jail and booked on the same.
- 21:19Speaker 5: Charges as Vincent Viale.
- 21:22Speaker 4: Their apartment was gone over, but no trace in narcotics
- 21:24Speaker 4: was found. We questioned both suspects again but they failed
- 21:27Speaker 4: to cooperate with us. Frank and I checked out of
- 21:29Speaker 4: the office and went home. The following morning, we drove
- 21:32Speaker 4: out to see the doctor who had told me he
- 21:34Speaker 4: was treating the pilgrim girl. He said the girl was
- 21:36Speaker 4: underweight and highly nervous, and that he had been giving
- 21:38Speaker 4: her vitamin injections. He went on to say that he'd
- 21:41Speaker 4: stopped treating her five months previous at her father's request,
- 21:44Speaker 4: and that he had not seen the girl since then.
- 21:47Speaker 4: February eleventh, ten twenty four am, we checked the car
- 21:50Speaker 4: belonging to Vincent Viale. In the trunk we found an
- 21:53Speaker 4: expensive letter jacket. It looked too expensive to be worn
- 21:56Speaker 4: by a man who had the reputation of.
- 21:57Speaker 5: Never holding a job.
- 21:59Speaker 4: We took the jacket over the crime labn't had a
- 22:01Speaker 4: checked from a cleaning tag.
- 22:02Speaker 5: We got the name of the cleaner who'd serviced the jacket.
- 22:05Speaker 4: We contacted him and he remembered the jacket as having
- 22:07Speaker 4: been among several stolen from his store. With this information,
- 22:11Speaker 4: we went back to the main jail and had the
- 22:12Speaker 4: Conklan boy brought from his cell. He told us that
- 22:15Speaker 4: the jacket belonged to Vincent Beale. He was brought into
- 22:17Speaker 4: the interview room.
- 22:18Speaker 7: This leather jacket belonged to you, Evince, No, I never
- 22:21Speaker 7: saw it before.
- 22:22Speaker 5: Conklin says, it's yours.
- 22:24Speaker 7: I don't know, maybe it is. What difference does it make?
- 22:26Speaker 7: Take a look?
- 22:26Speaker 5: We want to know.
- 22:29Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, where'd you get it? Where do you think
- 22:32Speaker 6: I bought it? You know someplace you can get these
- 22:34Speaker 6: without buying them?
- 22:34Speaker 5: Yeah, the same place you picked this one up. What's
- 22:36Speaker 5: that supposed to me an?
- 22:37Speaker 4: A man named Ted Hartman who Ted Hartman? Ted Hartman
- 22:42Speaker 4: never heard of him, He knows you. Maybe he's got
- 22:44Speaker 4: a better memory than me, says you used to.
- 22:46Speaker 5: Work for him?
- 22:46Speaker 7: Ye're right?
- 22:47Speaker 5: Yeah, how about it?
- 22:49Speaker 7: Maybe I did. I had a lot of jobs.
- 22:51Speaker 5: A cleaner says, you worked for him a couple of
- 22:52Speaker 5: weeks last December. It's a long time ago, says this
- 22:55Speaker 5: jacket was stolen from him.
- 22:56Speaker 4: But where do I fit? He thinks you stolen. He's
- 22:58Speaker 4: crazy and sure enough to make complain.
- 23:00Speaker 7: Now laugh, I'm out of court.
- 23:02Speaker 5: Conklin says, it's yours.
- 23:03Speaker 7: I told you I bought it.
- 23:05Speaker 5: Conkland wants no part of a burglary.
- 23:07Speaker 7: Wrap.
- 23:09Speaker 5: Well, Conklan tell you, maybe we got to get your
- 23:11Speaker 5: side of it.
- 23:11Speaker 7: Huh what he tell you?
- 23:12Speaker 5: I got to write to know.
- 23:14Speaker 7: Look, he's gonna make a beef like that. I mean,
- 23:15Speaker 7: I gotta write to know what he said.
- 23:17Speaker 5: He wants no part of it. He lays it all
- 23:18Speaker 5: on you. He's no good.
- 23:21Speaker 7: I hadn't figured for a guy I could trust. He
- 23:23Speaker 7: did all right on the deal. Luke kept us both going,
- 23:25Speaker 7: what do you mean? I thought he told you all
- 23:28Speaker 7: about it.
- 23:28Speaker 4: We want to hear it from you. A lot of
- 23:30Speaker 4: time stories get all mixed up. Now we want to
- 23:32Speaker 4: get it right.
- 23:34Speaker 7: We knocked the place, but it was both of us.
- 23:36Speaker 7: Lou was in on it all the way go ahead.
- 23:38Speaker 6: We were scratching for h We had a real bad
- 23:40Speaker 6: We needed some way out. I thought about the cleaning place,
- 23:43Speaker 6: figured we could score good. But we did all right.
- 23:46Speaker 6: Took care of three of us for a long time.
- 23:47Speaker 4: You conklent on the Pilgrim girls. It yeah, that's it.
- 23:50Speaker 4: What were you shooting? Me and Luke kept it down
- 23:52Speaker 4: the Pilgrim kids. She built up fast. She was using
- 23:55Speaker 4: five caps a day. I should have listened to Louis
- 23:58Speaker 4: kept telling me to drop or leave her alone. Wasn't
- 24:00Speaker 4: anything between us. It just for last and then all
- 24:02Speaker 4: of a sudden she was hooked bad. We had to
- 24:03Speaker 4: do something. We stole a jacket so we could keep
- 24:06Speaker 4: her supplied. Five caps a.
- 24:07Speaker 6: Day and that's a lot of h I tried to
- 24:10Speaker 6: break her down.
- 24:11Speaker 7: I tried to cut her habit. I did what I could.
- 24:13Speaker 7: You can see that can't I did everything I could.
- 24:15Speaker 5: How much was that?
- 24:22Speaker 4: Five twenty three pm, Frank and I, along with the policewoman,
- 24:24Speaker 4: Irene Gardener, go out to the Pilgrim residence.
- 24:27Speaker 5: We went up to the front porch and rang the bell.
- 24:29Speaker 10: Yeah, what do you want like to see your daughter?
- 24:33Speaker 10: You get out of here. You get out of here
- 24:34Speaker 10: right now. I've had enough of this shoving around from you.
- 24:36Speaker 10: It's about time you learned your plate.
- 24:37Speaker 5: It might be better if we came in.
- 24:39Speaker 10: Anything you got to say to me, you can say here,
- 24:41Speaker 10: I don't want any cops in my house.
- 24:43Speaker 5: You want to get your daughter? What four? You're gonna
- 24:45Speaker 5: have to take her down at juvenile home?
- 24:47Speaker 10: You guys just don't give up, do you? You want
- 24:49Speaker 10: me to call my doctor again. We talked to him
- 24:50Speaker 10: this afternoon, and you know the story. And I get
- 24:52Speaker 10: out of here. You want to get your daughter. Look,
- 24:54Speaker 10: I've got a gun inside. If you're still here when
- 24:56Speaker 10: I come back, I'm gonna get you.
- 24:57Speaker 4: Listen to me, mister. You've been aking like a big
- 24:59Speaker 4: man long enough. You can play the part of the
- 25:01Speaker 4: outrage parent with your family, but don't try it with us.
- 25:03Speaker 7: I'm not gonna have you talk to me like that.
- 25:05Speaker 4: Now much you can do about it. We got the
- 25:06Speaker 4: boys been supplying your daughter with narcotics. It's pretty clear
- 25:08Speaker 4: that this home isn't the place for She's a good girl.
- 25:10Speaker 4: We didn't say she wasn't. And why don't you leave
- 25:12Speaker 4: her alone?
- 25:12Speaker 5: You know better than that?
- 25:15Speaker 7: Do you? Boys? Some good downtown? I got a lot
- 25:16Speaker 7: of friends.
- 25:17Speaker 5: You're gonna need them all right.
- 25:19Speaker 10: You want to make a case out of this, I'll
- 25:20Speaker 10: fight you in every court in the country before I let.
- 25:22Speaker 7: You take my daughter away from me. Now you just
- 25:23Speaker 7: try it.
- 25:24Speaker 5: Your daughter's a drug addict. She's sick. She's got to
- 25:26Speaker 5: be straightened out. She needs help.
- 25:28Speaker 7: Who are you to set yourself up as the jury.
- 25:29Speaker 5: You got a fine girl in there. She got all
- 25:31Speaker 5: the breaks except somebody who thinks enough of her to
- 25:32Speaker 5: stand by her.
- 25:33Speaker 7: There isn't anything she wants she doesn't have.
- 25:35Speaker 4: What about the things she needed? You let her run
- 25:37Speaker 4: all over the town by herself. She gets in trouble
- 25:39Speaker 4: and you won't take the time to care for it.
- 25:42Speaker 10: What about those two men who got her started? What
- 25:44Speaker 10: are you gonna do with them? They're guilty. If it
- 25:46Speaker 10: hadn't been for those two, this never would have happened.
- 25:48Speaker 4: They'll be taken care of. You lay the blame any
- 25:49Speaker 4: place you want, mister, but if you're honest, you'll keep it.
- 25:53Speaker 7: What's gonna happen to her, she'd be.
- 25:54Speaker 5: Giving medical attention. Will do what we can.
- 25:57Speaker 10: I can't afford to take care of her. I've got
- 25:58Speaker 10: the money. I'll hire the best people wanted to have
- 26:00Speaker 10: the bests here.
- 26:01Speaker 7: She's mine. I'm a father. I've got the right to
