- 0:32M Simple on three Media huskerillustrated.com Huskers
- 0:36had their annual open practice open to fans and media this past
- 0:39Saturday evening. So we'll get the Intel from SIP
- 0:43on some of the things that he saw, positive and negative, the
- 0:46concerns, et cetera, for the Huskers and of course, Iowa and
- 0:50Nebraska, as they always do, and the regular season on Black
- 0:54Fridays, who will talk football with SIP pursuant to the Big 10
- 0:57at 12:25. And then Mitch Holtis, his
- 0:59regular spot, the daily Chiefs training camp reports brought to
- 1:03us by Papa John's throughout the state of Iowa.
- 1:06Mitch Holtis will be here at the 12:45, one o'clock.
- 1:11And this should be good. It usually is.
- 1:13But Kappy, I'm guessing, will be a little bit hot under the
- 1:16collar as we'll head to Chicago. Catch up with David Kaplan, the
- 1:20cap man, The Cubs, if you've listened over the years, well,
- 1:22they're his team and he is not pleased the way this team is
- 1:25performing right now. So we'll talk that and Bears
- 1:28with Kappy coming up at 1:00. And then the sports director
- 1:32over at KCCI, friend Scott Reister involved and he's been
- 1:35involved in this for a while and hats off to him.
- 1:38A Shot in the dark. It's the 38th annual Prevent
- 1:42Blindness event coming up at at Terrace Hill out in Altoona.
- 1:47And that's this weekend. Is it Friday or is it when is it
- 1:51I? Believe it's Friday, Yeah, the
- 1:5315th coming up a week from Friday.
- 1:55I've done it a couple of different times.
- 1:56It's an incredible event. It's so much fun.
- 1:59Just Yeah, a group of. KX you know, right?
- 2:01Yeah, we've gone a couple of times, went out there with Sean
- 2:03and Emery, was out there one year, played with a few others
- 2:06and it's just it's such a fun different.
- 2:09So do you look? Forward to the sun going down.
- 2:11Oh, absolutely you must. Right.
- 2:12Well, because you're hitting as it's starting to get darker and
- 2:15dusk, you're hitting these glow balls that aren't true golf
- 2:19balls. Do they go?
- 2:20How far do they go? I mean if you normally hit one,
- 2:22say 250. Yeah, probably like 215, OK,
- 2:25yeah, I mean, it's like maybe 80% of your shot, OK, or
- 2:28something like that. But that's what you're waiting
- 2:29for. And then when you finally hit
- 2:31one and you you hit that wedge and just see that glowing ball
- 2:35sailing through the air, it's a really fun event.
- 2:37So if you. Get on the green you putt and
- 2:39everything like a real golf game.
- 2:40Absolutely, yeah. It's it's really fun, really
- 2:43enjoyable, different way of doing it.
- 2:44And of course, great 'cause with a great 'cause.
- 2:47With a great 'cause. So Scott Reister will be here to
- 2:50talk about that. Good for you, Scott Reister for
- 2:51being involved in that and using your name and your place in the
- 2:55market here to to promote such a a worthwhile cause.
- 2:58Trent, we'll make some plays of the day that's coming up at
- 3:01about 1:50. Look forward to doing that or
- 3:04hearing what you're going to play here today.
- 3:05Kind of mixed day yesterday, right?
- 3:07Two and three, yeah. Hit the WNBA, hit one of your
- 3:10baseball games. That's right, we lost .8 units
- 3:14yesterday. Hit on the money line with the
- 3:16Sparks last night against the Fever and hit Tampa with Pipo My
- 3:20boy plus 1/12. There you go.
- 3:23You know what? I guess it's let's start.
- 3:25I, I don't look at I'm in my 30th year.
- 3:30I didn't think we would come to a time where we'd be talking
- 3:33about a, a sex toy being not once, not twice, but three times
- 3:37thrown onto the court of a basketball game.
- 3:40Just stop it. Just stop.
- 3:42It's not funny. It's not funny.
- 3:46I mean, what kind of person goes out of their way to a purchase
- 3:50one, sneak it into the building and wait for that right moment
- 3:53to throw it onto the floor? A.
- 3:55You're a copycat because it's been done.
- 3:59Wasn't this something with the bills like 3 or 4 years ago?
- 4:01Was it? I?
- 4:01I believe so, yes. And then maybe it didn't
- 4:04resonate with me because that's obviously men.
- 4:06Yeah. That this is, this is just
- 4:08ridiculous that somebody's going to this extent to prove how just
- 4:13worthless of a person that they are.
- 4:15And I don't know what you can do to whoever this perpetrator is.
- 4:20You know, once you do catch them, obviously you're going to
- 4:23bar them from any event in that building.
- 4:25I don't know if you can go further than that.
- 4:27I don't know what if there are any charges that would stick.
- 4:30But my good God, the message that you're sending, it's not
- 4:33being received well. It's just, it just goes to show
- 4:36you, you know, just where some of society is still at when it
- 4:41comes to a woman's sport. And admittedly, I was there, not
- 4:45the dildo stage, right? But just, I'm slow to adapt, but
- 4:50it just makes me sick. It truly does.
- 4:53And you have people like Sophie Cunningham last night that plays
- 4:57the social media game as well as he can.
- 4:58She does great, yeah. But it's embarrassing.
- 5:02It is. It's embarrassing for our
- 5:04demographic. The leak's got enough to deal
- 5:07with, right? Absolutely.
- 5:09And the infighting and the ugliness and the referee and the
- 5:11referee and both game play and off the court and there's so
- 5:14much other and this just adds another layer to it.
- 5:17It's not funny. It's not, it's not.
- 5:20Come on, the bro culture. Look, we're Bros, right?
- 5:24But the bro culture part of it, it's gross.
- 5:27It is. It's just.
- 5:28It's. Gross.
- 5:30I think in a way all males have some type of misogyny.
- 5:35It's all, it's all there at some .1 one way or the other.
- 5:39I think all of us have had those thoughts, had those feelings,
- 5:41had those ideas. Whatever it may be, it's with
- 5:44everybody and it probably goes both ways.
- 5:47I'm sure there's plenty of almost every female thought at a
- 5:49time a lot smarter than that guy and a lot smarter than those
- 5:52guys. You're right, I think women
- 5:54should run the world personally. Yes, that's you have that part
- 5:58of it, but then to act to it for what?
- 6:00What? What's the end game?
- 6:02What is outside of a couple of chuckles you're hoping to get,
- 6:05What is it? There is a video that's
- 6:08circulating this morning of one that didn't make the floor last
- 6:12night in LA. There were two of them in the
- 6:14building. That didn't make the floor.
- 6:15Landed like 5 rows short and it apparently hit a kid.
- 6:20Come on, screw up. Yeah.
- 6:23Screw up, which is ridiculous and and here's another thing,
- 6:25Trent. We both love betting on sports.
- 6:26Yes, but this is too far with this offshore place.
- 6:29What is it? Bet online?
- 6:30Yes. Yeah.
- 6:32I don't even know if I want to tell the story because this will
- 6:34bring this will get draw a laugh and that's not what it's meant
- 6:36to do. It disgusts me, it truly does.
- 6:38And Trent and I both like a good laugh.
- 6:40Yes, absolutely. This isn't a laugh.
- 6:42This isn't a funny matter. You actually bet on the colour,
- 6:45right? You get some.
- 6:46Come on. I mean, obviously it's going to
- 6:48be a licensed sports book in the in the on the mainland, but it's
- 6:53just too far. Anyways, I had to say my piece
- 6:56because it bothers the hell out of me.
- 6:57Enough is enough. What can be done?
- 7:00What can be done to these people?
- 7:02You have to be swift, decisive and when they find a
- 7:05perpetrator, did I mean you have to do everything.
- 7:09Is this this? Assault.
- 7:10Yeah, I mean. You're throwing a projectile.
- 7:12At somebody, what's the list you get on the sex or the?
- 7:18Oh, his sexual registry list. Yeah, the registry.
- 7:20Yeah. I mean, is that too far?
- 7:22I I don't see why not. I had an acquaintance in college
- 7:26that was peeing in an alley. He got put on that list.
- 7:29Really. Yes.
- 7:31Yeah. For a year he was on that list
- 7:33because he was peeing in an alley, got caught by the cops,
- 7:36and because of that, well, it was out in public.
- 7:39Oh God. So same thing here.
- 7:41I I don't know the legality. Of it, well, what's worse?
- 7:44Throw the book oh absolutely right taking a leak at a college
- 7:47town Oh my God right at 2:00 AM or this or this and yes damage
- 7:54can be done like if this really would strike somebody if if that
- 7:59kid I, I just. It's got to stop.
- 8:01Yeah. It's got to stop.
- 8:02It's got to stop. All right?
- 8:04I don't know how we stop. This is not a transition off
- 8:06board. Have you 30 years?
- 8:08Have you ever had to make this transition?
- 8:10Never. And you know what, I would have
- 8:11been fine if I would have got to the end without having to do so.
- 8:14Anyways, let's let's get into the into sports.
- 8:18Let's go to ESPN and their deal with with the NFL Network and
- 8:22the NFL in particular. Does this pass the smell test to
- 8:26you? No, not at all.
- 8:27It was interesting. I was taught respects so many of
- 8:30them, right? So I, I was actually talking to
- 8:32my wife about this last night and I said, you know, I've had
- 8:34it on my notes the last two days and something and we haven't got
- 8:37to it, but it was something I want to talk about.
- 8:39But then when I think about it, my mind tends to turns to mush.
- 8:45You have an entity that's been for sale for years, NFL Network.
- 8:49The NFL owners have wanted to get rid of it and you finally
- 8:52sell it, but you sell it for a stake of Disney, ESPN.
- 9:00This you going to believe anything that comes out of Adam
- 9:02Schefter's mouth. Are we going to get to that
- 9:05point? Are they going to are they going
- 9:07to be planting stories or you know, he can't, he can't report
- 9:10on that. That doesn't look good for the
- 9:11shield. Yes, here's another angle.
- 9:14Seth Wicker, Sam Sham. Is he done?
- 9:16What does he do? He's the ESPN guy that broke the
- 9:18Deflategate. He's been.
- 9:19Oh, he's. Helped.
- 9:20Yeah, right. Yeah.
- 9:21Brush up on your resume. Yeah, exactly right.
- 9:24A great writer. Yeah.
- 9:25Great writer, but the investigative word.
- 9:27No, not not when it comes to reporting on the NFL.
- 9:31What do they own? They own the ESPN Bet the NFL
- 9:34now a a A league owns a part of a betting company.
- 9:40There are no more Monday night doubleheaders.
- 9:42I liked them. I wish they would have been
- 9:44staggered a little bit. Not this year because I think
- 9:47there's a couple on the schedule this year, but going forward
- 9:49there won't be. I don't watch the red zone but I
- 9:52know a lot of people are happy. I love the red zone.
- 9:54I know you do, and you're not alone.
- 9:56In fact, there's a millions of people like you.
- 9:58What's the host's name? Scott Hanson, he's good.
- 10:01He's not as not as good as the old DIRECTV guy.
- 10:03Ceciliano with the big ears, she was really good.
- 10:07But Scott Hanson is safe. And that made a lot of people
- 10:10happy because they've moved on from Siciliano to to to Scott
- 10:15Hanson. So he's safe.
- 10:17But I just found it really, and it's been the rumors have been
- 10:21out there for a while. The league owns part of a a
- 10:24television network. How are you supposed to report?
- 10:26Right right now, NFL Network, they haven't gone heavy-handed,
- 10:32but they also haven't shield away for the most.
- 10:34Part No, but they're never the Breakers.
- 10:36And that's and that's, I mean, I understand because we're not
- 10:38supposed to break stuff either, you know, we're I was told this
- 10:41a long time ago when I think we broke one.
- 10:43Well, I didn't, but it was nowhere near being accurate.
- 10:47What? You believe it or not, shocker
- 10:51and got called the corner. Now we don't want you breaking
- 10:52stories you guys just talk about yes anyways.
- 10:55That is not our job. Right, but it's just it doesn't
- 10:58pass the IT doesn't pass the smell test to me.
- 11:00We'll see if you know, if it's not as bad as we think it's
- 11:02going to be. But I don't like them being
- 11:04involved in the ESPN bet. I think that has should be sold
- 11:06personally. And and that part of it, I guess
- 11:08it hasn't even jumped in. It's just seeing the way that it
- 11:11is seeing reading through front office sports and over a puck
- 11:16with John O Randy. And I just can't, I can't wrap
- 11:19my mind around it, how you sell these entities, how you want to
- 11:22get rid of these things. You've been trying for years to
- 11:24get rid of them. You finally do.
- 11:26And ESPN's been for sale too, too, at two companies looking on
- 11:30the on the market. And now you're giving a part of
- 11:33your equity. This isn't that.
- 11:38That's the part that just it's so difficult to.
- 11:40Wrap my mind around We're talking about huge money.
- 11:43This is huge, not millions of dollars.
- 11:45I mean, we're talking about a huge financial stake.
- 11:48And then you couple it with what's happening with the new
- 11:51ESPN app and now available. You don't have to have a cable
- 11:54subscription. You can get everything, Monday
- 11:55Night Football, every single single thing starting here this
- 11:58month for 30 bucks a month. And then I see the press release
- 12:02that also comes out today that the pay-per-view events for
- 12:06wrestling pro Wrestling is also going to be a part of this.
- 12:09And so I haven't watched a Russell Media in, I don't know,
- 12:1330 years, however. You probably did so when it was
- 12:15free. Well, and it was a bunch of
- 12:18buddies getting together when we were middle school and that's
- 12:20when we did it and somebody got at their house and that's how we
- 12:22get it now today. So is that the 1st pay-per-view
- 12:25you ever bought? Yes.
- 12:27I mine was boxing in the 70s. OK.
- 12:31Ali got killed. Yeah.
- 12:33Who beat him that day? Was it Foreman?
- 12:35It might have been. And it was or Holmes.
- 12:37It was Larry Holmes. OK.
- 12:38And it was sad. Yeah, it was sad.
- 12:40But it was at your house. No, we went to the closed
- 12:42circuit arena. OK, yeah, 'cause.
- 12:44I remember hearing the stories at the closed circuit days.
- 12:47And that would be closed circuit, right?
- 12:49Yeah, that's. The closed circuit days where
- 12:50you went into an auditorium or or a theater or whatever it is
- 12:53and that's the way that they did it and they set it up that
- 12:56direction. This was call up, make the phone
- 13:00call, talk to the person on the other end of the phone.
- 13:02And that's how we used to do things, kids.
- 13:04And did you dial the numbers? And dial the numbers you.
- 13:07Have to stand in your kitchen because he.
- 13:09Absolutely didn't have a wireless and you make that phone
- 13:12call. Oh my God.
- 13:13And then this changed. You have to and you got and you
- 13:16got notified about this in your newspaper.
- 13:18Newspaper talked about it, probably had the the ad there,
- 13:21the number to actually call to make it happen and then voila it
- 13:25was on the television. Wild 27 inch colour TV what is
- 13:30it? A single def.
- 13:32Single def Yeah, there was. There was no.
- 13:33There's a bell and it's the last thing that came in your mind is
- 13:36I really not see this, but. Hulk Hogan against Ultimate
- 13:38Warrior. It was worth it.
- 13:40Boy Ultimate. Warrior he was something, wasn't
- 13:41he, with that face paint I saw I saw a there was a is it The
- 13:46History Channel came out with some of the like a hour show on
- 13:49some. Of the big names, yeah, I've
- 13:51wanted there's a. Few that I saw.
- 13:52Ultimate Warriors yeah, I think he was from like rural Kentucky
- 13:56or Indiana some I mean anyways, let's talk about baseball.
- 14:01Let's. Let's do that.
- 14:02Yeah, 'cause we have to and you know, but I don't know.
- 14:06But maybe 5 weeks ago I asked you, if the I asked you if this
- 14:09number is good enough, would you be interested in this Yankees to
- 14:12make the play offs? No, was plus +800 or something
- 14:16like that. And no, you couldn't get there.
- 14:17I don't know what the Cubs are. If you're a Cubs fan right now,
- 14:21you're worried if this team is even going to because the
- 14:24Brewers aren't losing. It's unbelievable.
- 14:27I bet, I guess it last night. What an idiot.
- 14:29I saw it was 4 nothing right off the bat.
- 14:31Yeah, now they're they're still in pretty good shape, the Cubs,
- 14:35right? But still, it's the way that
- 14:37they're playing right now and it's the lack of production.
- 14:40If Kyle Tucker is as hurt as we're being led on, led to
- 14:46believe, sit his ass down for 15 days or for 10 days or whatever
- 14:51it may be because he's hurting his team.
- 14:55It's and he's not alone. He's not and and maybe that's
- 14:58the issue is they all stink right now and we can't give
- 15:01anybody because we need to have at least one of these guys start
- 15:03to ignite and get going. You know, mentioned it
- 15:06yesterday, watching again last night.
- 15:08It's not that we're not getting hits happens right?
- 15:12They are flailing they're. Clueless.
- 15:15Just. Awful, awful at bats.
- 15:18And it's like they don't have a game plan.
- 15:20Just, well, maybe I'll get lucky.
- 15:22Put my bath through the zone. If I make contacts, here we go.
- 15:26It the confidence, the mannerisms, just the the lack of
- 15:32it's just that what you expect a major leaguer to look like.
- 15:35I talk about this all the time when I go to a night Cubs game.
- 15:37You can tell, oh, that dude and that dude don't even look at a
- 15:39number of roster. You can just see the way that
- 15:41they carry themselves and that roster one through 9, that
- 15:44lineup one through 9 right now, none of those guys are carrying
- 15:47them. Maybe Matt Shaw?
- 15:49He might be the guy. How about this Kyle Tucker PCA
- 15:52in Suzuki since the All Star break 4 Combined home runs Matt
- 15:55Shaw 5. Do you have that on your bingo?
- 15:58No, no, I had him coming back here.
- 16:01Right, a more likely scenario. Great in the field, but boy just
- 16:04can't figure it out at at the plate.
- 16:06It's a minago. Was terrific last night.
- 16:08Goes 6 1/3 and got pulled. To answer your question, this is
- 16:13available currently on DraftKings.
- 16:15Yes, No to make the. Playoffs for the Cubs.
- 16:17For the Chicago Cubs. I'm more interested in the no.
- 16:20The no is plus 950. That's a big price that's.
- 16:25A big price. What would have been, I mean, a
- 16:28couple of weeks ago would have been doubled 20 to 10.
- 16:30Absolutely, yes, by the way -1400 so obviously big juice
- 16:35there. So the Reds are the first team
- 16:37out of the playoffs right now. They're 4 1/2 back and you go
- 16:40the other way and you look at if you want the Reds to make the
- 16:42playoffs plus 250. I'd rather bet the Cubs know I
- 16:46would too, 'cause I think the Cub, the Padres are going to be
- 16:48fine. I think the Mets are.
- 16:49Going to be fine. I do too.
- 16:50I'm with you on the Mets. I.
- 16:51I think now the Mets have their own set of issues and that
- 16:55rotation, it's finally starting to show it's where.
- 16:58It is, I agree. Coming back to I agree, but do
- 17:01you think that the Cardinals or the Giants or the Marlins or the
- 17:04Diamondbacks, any of those teams are getting into it?
- 17:05No. So there's one team that can get
- 17:07in. It's the rest and this is a
- 17:09complete about face in the last 48 hours because when we had
- 17:12Matt Snyder on on Monday, we both thought that the six teams
- 17:15in the National League were set in stone.
- 17:17And now here we are, right with the Reds taking the 1st 2 of
- 17:20this series. Kate Horton, you better have
- 17:21yourself a day-to-day young man because this team is counting on
- 17:24you in a big way. Because once you get past that,
- 17:27I mean, all of a sudden Colin Ray, I mean, is Ben Brown going
- 17:30to be inserted into the lineup? Is he going to have to start?
- 17:33And are you going to start him knowing that, you know, in four
- 17:37days you're starting or you just kind of surprise him?
- 17:40Because I think that works out better for him.
- 17:43It is not going well. And they're going up against the
- 17:46Andrew Abbott today. Are they, that's who's pitching
- 17:48for the for the Reds and then they everybody's got to death.
- 17:52There's like 4 games tomorrow and then they go to Saint Louis
- 17:55for the weekend in a huge series.
- 17:57We'll take a time out. We're going to come back, we're
- 17:59going to head to Lincoln, catch up with our buddy Stephen M
- 18:02Sipple on the Huskers. We'll get the latest on his
- 18:05thoughts on on that team, kind of how he sees the Big 10.
- 18:08Looking forward to catching up with Sip and doing that.
- 18:12We missed him in Vegas, didn't we?
- 18:14Yeah, he stiffed us. I saw him.
- 18:16You saw him, right? I came home.
- 18:18Oh, and boy, was I giving him a hard time.
- 18:19Were you Good? Now it's your turn to give.
- 18:21Him Oh, I'm going to because he couldn't wait to wrap your arm,
- 18:24give you a great big and hug Kenny.
- 18:26Come and get it step. Then he stiffed us.
- 18:30We'll take a time out. We'll come back with Simple.
- 18:32Then Mitch Holtis, Cappy kicks off our number 2.
- 18:35We'll head to Chicago. Scott Reister and Trent's Plays
- 18:37of the Day Circus sports sponsor those.
- 18:40It's 1220 on a Wednesday. You're listening to Miller in
- 18:43Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 18:48It's time for SIP. Steven M Simple talks with
- 18:53myself and Ken on Nebraska football.
- 18:55I mean, I have a radio show, we have callers.
- 18:58I pay attention to my Twitter notifications and all that.
- 19:01There's definitely some frustration.
- 19:03We talk Hornhuskers, and you never know what else is going to
- 19:07come up with 30 years on the Nebraska beat.
- 19:12Here's Steven M Simple. As long as they're paying me to
- 19:15talk, I'm just going to keep doing it.
- 19:17Hi, I'm Hillary Condon. Welcome back.
- 19:19Coming up on 12:30 on a Wednesday, Iowa Sport Radio
- 19:22Network. Stand by your man, yeah?
- 19:26It's funny Steven M simple covers the Huskers for Husker
- 19:30illustrated part of on three media sip my subscriptions
- 19:34coming up and you know as soon as you jumped over there I
- 19:37supporting my buddy. I jumped right away got up my
- 19:40debit card signed up. It's about to renew.
- 19:42And then my buddy stood me up in Las Vegas, Man, I mean, I don't
- 19:49know what to do. It's a bad look for me.
- 19:57Now you understood. Yes, I do.
- 20:00You had a company outing. I get it.
- 20:02Yeah, it was kind of like. A company outing and that was
- 20:05we're just there 2 for one. We were there two nights, but we
- 20:10weren't, we weren't. We left, you know, after
- 20:13Nebraska was done. That was part of the reason I
- 20:16but yeah. Did you ever make it over to the
- 20:17Mandalay Bay? No, no, I never left.
- 20:21I never left circa. Well, I just should say I went
- 20:24back down the street. I went to cab a block to a pizza
- 20:26joint, but that's another story. I met up, but no.
- 20:30I wish you would have. I wish you would have seen you.
- 20:31I love catching up with Evan over It's briefly and we'll do
- 20:35it again some point, I'm guessing.
- 20:36But so how you been? I'm not good.
- 20:39Good. How are you been?
- 20:40Hey, congratulations on your retirement.
- 20:42Thank you pal. I mean it.
- 20:44I mean that God, I don't I I suppose it means we're not going
- 20:49to be talking on the. Radio, well, I'm still going to.
- 20:51I'm still going to do a Sunday show starting for football.
- 20:53So yes, you and I will. Maybe not every week because I
- 20:57only get a couple hours a week, but I'm certainly going to
- 21:00during football season. I'll find a way to get my good
- 21:02friends in there and I've talked to you on the radio longer and
- 21:04I've spoken with anybody else Sip.
- 21:06So yes. That is nice to hear and it's
- 21:11even nice specific of you to say.
- 21:13I appreciate. That no, absolutely well, let's
- 21:16get into what the real reason we had you on not to give you you
- 21:19know what, but I do. I wouldn't like to see you, but
- 21:22we'll do it another time. Let's your Saturday night was
- 21:25busy or watching open practice you and, and a bunch of fans
- 21:29were there. I guess from some of the reports
- 21:32that I've read and we keep hearing about Matt rule year #3
- 21:36and certainly there is a history there and how the success keeps
- 21:39building and year #3 it takes off and it seems sip on the
- 21:43surface that this might be a year that you know that that
- 21:47take off continues. There's a lot of positives that
- 21:50I'm reading about. Obviously the receivers and we
- 21:53know the quarterback, but let's start with the receivers.
- 21:55It seems like he's got a much better core of receivers to
- 21:59throw the ball to this year. Yeah, it's yeah.
- 22:03I would almost say I just want to be careful not to go too far,
- 22:07but almost like night and day compared to two years ago with
- 22:12what Frost kind of left him. Scott Frost, what He left it now
- 22:17and now it looks like like an SEC receiver room would look to
- 22:23me. Oh, it's yeah.
- 22:25It's impressive. They got a It's not.
- 22:28Now listen, it's not Ohio State. I don't want.
- 22:31To mislead it if you are. Yeah, yeah, it's not Ohio State,
- 22:35but I bet it's better than Penn State.
- 22:38I bet it is. Seriously, It's it's good they
- 22:41they have in this world. You can flip scripts so fast on
- 22:48a football team. You know, this was the double
- 22:51check this I think it was the 95th ranked offense in the
- 22:54country last year. And now the narrative here is
- 22:58that's the strength, you know, and that's partly the result of
- 23:03the receivers. It's partly the result of an
- 23:06offensive line that got two big time transfers.
- 23:10And it's probably a nod to Dylan Rayola being in the second year.
- 23:16The schedule sets up incredibly well, Sip.
- 23:18But we've we've played this game a lot.
- 23:21We have played this game a ton over the last.
- 23:24Couple of decades over the last couple of years too.
- 23:26And I've been warning you many times I I don't have that same
- 23:30kind of warning signal going. I think this team is going to be
- 23:32better and keep building as I thought they were going to be a
- 23:34bowl team a year ago and they were.
- 23:37But what happens if Lucy pulls the football away again this
- 23:41year and this team loses those 5050 games?
- 23:44They lose to Michigan and they lose at Minnesota and they they
- 23:47struggle in November and maybe lose four straight to end the
- 23:51season and go 5 if it goes that poorly again.
- 23:54What happens with this football program that finally for the
- 23:58first time in a long time, it's building and you can actually
- 24:01see it? What happens if that doesn't
- 24:03happen this year? How much angst is going to be
- 24:05out there amongst this fan base? Baton, I mean, just like it
- 24:09would be anywhere. But yeah, you know, it's I I
- 24:14don't listen. I know what you're getting at.
- 24:16And when I say I don't, I almost sound dismissive When I say like
- 24:20it would be anywhere. It's not anywhere here.
- 24:23It's different. It's a different feel here.
- 24:27So that would be a disaster. I and it's a disaster for it
- 24:34would be. I don't want to go too far down
- 24:35the road because it's a, it's a hypothetical, but it's a
- 24:39disaster in part because of the, I don't know, It's just you just
- 24:45keep hitting people over the head here, you know, like, like,
- 24:51and then it's like people are tired of like guys like me,
- 24:55media in Nebraska going on shows and writing, you know, and being
- 25:02optimistic. They only want to hear optimism
- 25:04really. I.
- 25:05Could understand that as a fan sip.
- 25:07You got to understand that, right?
- 25:09100% And then the other part of it is the bigger picture, and
- 25:13that is a lot of people are turned off by a lot of what's
- 25:16happened in college sports. So you got this sort of it's,
- 25:21you're getting it at both ends, like there's 2, it's a 2 pronged
- 25:25problem. You know, it's the, it's the,
- 25:30you know, the vortex of the storm is an issue.
- 25:32But then there's this other issue, this bigger issue
- 25:35outside. So now, and it's possible too,
- 25:39there's no guarantee this team isn't so good.
- 25:42Then I'm going to come on and say, oh God Dang, I win 8 no
- 25:45matter what. I don't know.
- 25:46I have a feeling no win 8 or 9. I, I, I have that feeling.
- 25:52There's still some concerns, though.
- 25:53I mean, there's definitely some concerns.
- 25:55I'll get to those concerns in a second.
- 25:57In fact, I'll ask you if this is one of them because over the
- 25:59years since Nebraska's moved to the Big 10, way back in the day
- 26:02now seemingly you've said many times that they don't look like
- 26:07a Big 10 team, they don't look like Iowa.
- 26:09You've used that line a couple of times, SIP and that pursuant
- 26:12to the offensive and defensive line in the trenches, are they
- 26:16at that point now with this group?
- 26:19Oh, that's a great question. I do remember when Frost was
- 26:21here. How well Frost, do you remember
- 26:24when Frost came to Iowa and I think it's his first year and
- 26:26said they we don't look like that.
- 26:28And it was very, very pronounced at that point.
- 26:30No, it's not like that anymore. It's still there's still a
- 26:34little. I'll start with the offensive
- 26:37line. I bet you the offensive line is
- 26:39better than Iowa. I don't even know what Iowa's
- 26:42thought but but I but I bet it's better they're good up front on
- 26:46offense. I always got 2 pre season all
- 26:48American sip. Yeah, I'd still take Nebraska
- 26:51thing, OK, they're really good up front, but.
- 26:54Here we go again. No, no, they are.
- 26:57I think they got five NFL guys up front and I'm just parroting
- 27:03what a few NFL types have told me, but not first rounders, not
- 27:09all Americans, but I think they got like guys they'll be drafted
- 27:134th, 7th round types. Now, as far as the D line goes,
- 27:18no, they're not. They're not where they need to
- 27:20be. I, I, that's the biggest concern
- 27:24and that is, you know, that's not where you want to be
- 27:28vulnerable. Now, they, it's a great
- 27:30conversation around here because it is a very pervasive
- 27:35narrative. And then the push back is pretty
- 27:38strong too. They don't want to hear it.
- 27:40Of course they don't want to hear it because it affects the
- 27:42kids. But the kids have heard it.
- 27:44They have a chip on their shoulder.
- 27:46It's sort of an unfair conversation.
- 27:48And you guys will understand this because you understand
- 27:51college football so well. They're just young.
- 27:53I mean, they're, you know, a lot of the guys they're asking to
- 27:57step into key roles are just they're not, you know, they're
- 28:00sophomores. They're they're a junior who
- 28:03didn't play much last year, Cam Lenhart.
- 28:07But a lot of them are just register freshman sophomores.
- 28:11And think about it. I mean, a lot of those guys that
- 28:14get good at Iowa, Nebraska, like Ty Robinson wasn't really very
- 28:18good. I was fifth year and then forged
- 28:21in his sixth. I mean, in two years they got a
- 28:25kid named Fiona Davis who's really good.
- 28:26You'll you'll, you'll understand what you're seeing.
- 28:29But he's a sophomore. He's good now.
- 28:32He's going to be really, really good.
- 28:34That's two years or a year away. Like Sue, you know, Sue Sue
- 28:40wasn't great as a sophomore. You know, then he started
- 28:44getting really good kind of late in the sophomore season and then
- 28:49and then took off. But they just need time and they
- 28:53don't have it. They don't have time.
- 28:55They got to be good now. All right, SIP.
- 28:58Well, we know come Black Friday, it'll probably come down to a
- 29:01field goal and signal. He always does.
- 29:03I was had a pretty major advantage there and I'm looking
- 29:06at the depth chart and I see a couple of names that I know and
- 29:09they don't exactly paint a great picture.
- 29:11There's a transfer also in the mix.
- 29:13So the kicking game, special teams, overall, it's been a
- 29:16differentiator in the Black Friday game.
- 29:18Are they confident what they have and it's going to be
- 29:20different this year? Lincoln in special teams.
- 29:22Long snapper holder issues last year.
- 29:24Remember those? Oh, yeah.
- 29:26Oh, they cleaned house. I mean, they, they, they change
- 29:30the long snap. It'll be a new holder, probably
- 29:32a new kicker. It could be John Hole, who was
- 29:34kicking in Iowa last year for Nebraska.
- 29:36But they brought in a kid, a transfer from Cal via Charlotte.
- 29:42And he, they, they, I think his name is Cal Tumannon.
- 29:46He, I think he'll be the kicker. Now the key is they got a new
- 29:50special teams coach and he's dynamic.
- 29:52Mike Eckler, who was at Tennessee.
- 29:55Now go back, go look at Tennessee's numbers.
- 29:57He was he, he's, he wants to be the best special teams coach in
- 30:02the world. And what he did at Tennessee
- 30:05start to sort of look like he's moving in that direction and
- 30:09he's confident as hell. He loves what he has here.
- 30:12I want you know, that practice they went, they did of course a
- 30:15field goal kicking live session didn't miss any.
- 30:20I think they're probably, I didn't count it probably 9 for
- 30:229. You know, they're pushing it to
- 30:2540 plus yards and it I mean 2. Nanan and Hole, the two guys are
- 30:30competing. Just looks fabulous.
- 30:33And a lot of it, just a lot of it will be Mike Eckler, the new
- 30:36special teams coach. He's here to, I mean, he, he's
- 30:42obviously this, he's extremely confident.
- 30:45And I think Nebraska, the way I size it up, I think they're
- 30:49going to be pretty good on offense and I think special
- 30:51teams is going to be legitimately good.
- 30:53They got a new punter who's a rugby style guy.
- 30:57They so they changed their scheme.
- 30:59They've never, they've never had a rug scheme in Nebraska.
- 31:03Or maybe one time with a kid named Daniel Turney who then got
- 31:06hurt. So this is all new, but it looks
- 31:09really good. So I don't, I don't know.
- 31:12I mean, I, I'm, I am, you can tell I'm pretty optimistic.
- 31:16There's there's some halting optimism because of the past and
- 31:19because that D line. Sip 3 weeks from tomorrow at off
- 31:23to Kansas City Arrowhead Stadium, Cincinnati from the Big
- 31:2712, Nebraska and the Big 10 going to be a fun week.
- 31:29We will talk to you that week. Sip appreciate if not before
- 31:33thanks for what you do for us. You join us every week during
- 31:35the season and we look forward to carrying this on this year
- 31:39and have a great rest of your day pal. 100%.
- 31:43Thanks guys. Good to talk to Stephen Siple on
- 31:45three media huskerillustrated.com and I
- 31:47showed, yes, I will renew with it.
- 31:49Of course I will. SIP he is selling it.
- 31:53You know what? He doesn't usually go that hard.
- 31:55He doesn't. So is he right or is he just
- 31:58joined the pack? He's joined the pack.
- 32:01I mean, are they going to be fine?
- 32:03Sure. What is that 758 and four?
- 32:06Fine. Better offensive line than Iowa,
- 32:08OK. I was left, tackles, the concern
- 32:11right. The other four spots, though,
- 32:13you feel. Good.
- 32:13Yeah, you're absolutely, you know.
- 32:16That special teams are fixed. I mean, we haven't seen in two
- 32:19decades, but they're fixed now. This.
- 32:20Is. The year, this is the year that
- 32:22they're fixed a wide receiver room that looks like an SCC wide
- 32:25receiver room. You know, I love SIP, but the
- 32:28hyperbole. But he did stop sure to staying
- 32:30there as good as Ohio State. So you got to give them full
- 32:33money. So they're only #2 in the
- 32:34country. Husker fans, Your media does you
- 32:39no favors. I.
- 32:40Guess. You you can agree with that.
- 32:42That that's true, but but I what I will agree with having spent
- 32:45the fall of what was it 94 over there and getting ensconced,
- 32:50it's different. And that's in the heyday.
- 32:52That's in the heyday. That's all they have.
- 32:55Well, they got volleyball. Yeah, they sell up for
- 32:58basketball. They do now.
- 33:00They do now, but it's, it's, it's Husker football and it is,
- 33:06it's something we'll take a time out.
- 33:07Holtis, Mitch. Next Daily Chiefs training camp,
- 33:10reports Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 33:38Hi, Miller Condon, welcome back. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 33:41Trent Condon, Ken Miller, we are with you until 2:00.
- 33:46By the sounds of things, we will not be with Mitch Holtis.
- 33:49Perhaps we're having some phone issues of all things.
- 33:53The show, that radio's calling show can't get any calls.
- 33:57So we're trying to obviously repair that on the fly.
- 34:02Leo Chanel was supposed to be on the spotlight today when it
- 34:04comes to the Chiefs. So hopefully that will work out
- 34:07and we'll be able to make this work at some point and get Mitch
- 34:11in here as we're navigating our way through this now as we talk
- 34:16Chiefs on a daily basis through the month of August.
- 34:19Sponsored by our friends at Papa John's here in the state of Iowa
- 34:23as well as around the entire state of Iowa.
- 34:27Looks like we are getting Mitch and Mitch Holtis.
- 34:31We patched that up just in time. Mitch saved by the bell.
- 34:35We only have about 6 minutes left.
- 34:36So let's get right into it with the Leo Chanel who's in the
- 34:40spotlight today. You know, I keep coming back to
- 34:43that play he made against the against the Broncos.
- 34:45I hate to my Broncos keep coming up in this, but that was an
- 34:49unbelievable play. I'd give Dave Taub, I guess it
- 34:51had to be his mastermind behind spotting that weakness and
- 34:54Chanel splits them and gets a pop in there and the Chiefs win.
- 34:58The Chiefs win. He's made more big plays that
- 35:02the Chiefs Kingdom in the NFL has forgotten about, but he's
- 35:07also he's on the verge of stardom, pass rusher coverage.
- 35:13He just got to get on the field and got to get him more snaps.
- 35:16But I know this, I talked to him.
- 35:18The loss in Super Bowl 59 does not deter him.
- 35:22It only motivates him even more. New level, new time, new chance,
- 35:26not only for the team but for you personally.
- 35:28As you go into this season, how do you view it and your role and
- 35:32have an even more of an expanded role?
- 35:35You know, I just view it as an opportunity.
- 35:37The greatest thing you can learn from is a loss.
- 35:39And you know, nothing hurts more than than losing where we did
- 35:42and how we did. So we, we all took a good
- 35:45reflection in the mirror and you know, we let the pain like sit
- 35:49with us for a while. And but now we're past that.
- 35:51We're past that, all that moping around and I feel like all,
- 35:54every single one of us just has that fire.
- 35:56You know, we're not, nobody's sitting here down hanging their
- 35:58heads anymore. We're all ready to go.
- 36:00You know, personally, I just look back at everything, all the
- 36:03wrongs, all the good that I did last year and try to improve on
- 36:06that and make not necessarily, you know, going to get a whole
- 36:11ton of more opportunities this year.
- 36:12But I just have to make the most of the opportunities that I'm
- 36:15given, whether I'm on the line, off the ball, dropping into
- 36:18coverage. I think I have a lot, a lot more
- 36:21big plays in the tank and I just got to prove it.
- 36:25Big plays, big plays. Blocked PAT in Super Bowl 58 can
- 36:29totally forgotten. Changed the game, kept it one
- 36:32possession, Allowed the Chiefs to get to overtime, Forced
- 36:35fumble. Christian McCaffrey early in
- 36:37that game. People forget about these plays.
- 36:39If Chanel gets on the field, he will make more of those big
- 36:41plays that people won't forget, but they'll remember.
- 36:44When we're talking about that linebacker group and kind of the
- 36:47positioning there, I know on the depth chart, at least at
- 36:49chiefs.com, it just has them all listed as line Packers.
- 36:52What are the responsibilities? We know that Bolton's in the
- 36:54middle, but when you look at Tranquil, when you look at
- 36:57Chanel, when we're talking about it, just kind of generally those
- 37:00two outside guys, what are their responsibilities?
- 37:03Yeah, great question. Loaded question.
- 37:05It would be ELB, which is everything.
- 37:07Linebacker Leo Chanel did something in this camp I don't
- 37:10think I've ever seen. He wrapped as an off defensive
- 37:14lineman in the OLDL. one-on-one. It's like watching Iowa, Iowa
- 37:18State wrestling or you and I, they it's hand, blah, blah,
- 37:21blah. one-on-one, one-on-one, it's toughest.
- 37:23And then he's done. He runs over across the field to
- 37:26go over to the other field to do 7 on 70.
- 37:29Makes the most athletic interception that anybody's made
- 37:32this year. Among the linebacking core.
- 37:34It's everything other than Bolts being the green dot middle guy.
- 37:38Everybody else can do everything and they're asked to do
- 37:41everything. So yeah, it's.
- 37:43Just put an LB by the name, but honestly there's way more to it
- 37:46than that. I want to save obviously a
- 37:48minute for the Donaldsons and Papa John's and and maybe we
- 37:51won't have time to answer this, but and everybody's different.
- 37:53I get it. But he were he referenced, you
- 37:55know, how he got over the Super Bowl.
- 37:57Everybody's different, Mitch, and obviously when you come back
- 38:00for another year, you want to be past it, but you just, there's
- 38:03no handbook, right as to how to get past a a disappointment such
- 38:07as losing a Super Bowl. Yeah, and getting wiped out.
- 38:10But this goes back to my very first podcast I did with Matt
- 38:13McMullen after the game. Why is there going to be a
- 38:16hangover? We've seen that in the NFL.
- 38:19Not with this infrastructure, Ken.
- 38:21There's just just a strong current we talked about.
- 38:24It's cliche to talk about culture, but it's really here.
- 38:28And you have all your coordinators back, you've got
- 38:30all your head, got the head coach back, you got all your
- 38:32stars back, and the division is better, but the Chiefs are
- 38:35better. It's going to be an awesome AFC
- 38:37West, but there's no hangover at these guys.
- 38:39It's just the opposite. It's like they never won
- 38:41anything. But that's part of the culture
- 38:43that has been made by Andy Reid. Let's talk about Papa John's,
- 38:47the Donaldsons, or what they do in the special that they've got
- 38:50offered. 1299, man, this medium cheeseburger pizza is going to
- 38:55get you ready for the Iowa State Fair and the football season.
- 38:58So just go with 1299 Gretzky with the 9912 Pick a 12.
- 39:03I don't know, don't pick Tom Brady, don't do that one.
- 39:06But anyway, 1299 for Papa John's.
- 39:08Love those guys and they're awesome for Iowa.
- 39:11Indeed they are. Mitch.
- 39:12Appreciate it. And we will speak with you
- 39:13tomorrow. Thank you, Mitch Holtis.
- 39:15Thanks brother. Yeah, good to talk to you.
- 39:17Mitch Holtis, the Daily Chiefs training camp report, The
- 39:20doncers, they do a lot philanthropically for the for
- 39:24central Iowa, all throughout the state of Iowa.
- 39:26Papa John's, you heard it, the 1299 special coming up in our
- 39:31number 2. So obviously, did you fix
- 39:32something? I did absolutely nothing.
- 39:35I just hit the buttons again and it finally popped.
- 39:37Up good for. You.
- 39:39It was a scary 2 minutes though. Well, keep writing.
- 39:41I hope you remember what you did, because we got to.
- 39:43Get nothing. Nothing.
- 39:45Well, you should have taken some credit and fibbed a little bit.
- 39:48I did it all, Mr. Engineer, over here.
- 39:51Good stuff, Cappy, off to Chicago, we will go.
- 39:54Cubs 20 minutes away from trying to salvage one of these three
- 39:58from the Reds. And then we'll talk to Scott
- 40:01Reister. He'll be in studio, I believe,
- 40:02to talk about the event coming up.
- 40:05It is the shot in the dark golf. 38th Annual Hour 2 is next Iowa
- 40:09Sports Radio Network.
