- 1:12Great Detectives dot net. Well, some changes for Mister Malone this week and
- 1:22pretty significant. First of all, these episodes of Mister Malone, we're going
- 1:30to hear we're on NBC rather than ABC, and we have a new actor
- 1:34starring in the lead role, George Petre. We heard him previously as the
- 1:45second actor to play Bill Grant on Call the Police around two hundred and fifty
- 1:53episodes back, and he actually had quite a run on radio going back to
- 1:59forty two. But he was one of these actors who really started to get
- 2:05some juicier roles as the golden age of radio decline, because he was a
- 2:14little bit more affordable than some of the leading men who were being lured away
- 2:17by television. And in addition to his work on the Murder Amazing Mister Malone
- 2:28story, we'll also hear him as the last actor to play the falcon between
- 2:34the two titles. Though John J. Malone's stories ran for a total of
- 2:38one hundred and sixty seven weeks on ABC, starring Frank Lovejoy and Gene Raymond,
- 2:46among those, we have just the four full episodes we've played the last
- 2:54four weeks. This particular iteration of the Malones of the Malone series will only
- 3:05ran for eight weeks, but we have all eight episodes. The Amazing Mister
- 3:09Malone took over the timeslot of Dangerous Assignment, which NBC didn't actually canceled,
- 3:15but just took off the air four months and brought back at another time zone,
- 3:21and we'll be replaced by another show which would only last for eleven weeks,
- 3:24which is perhaps an indication of the state of NBC programming as we're getting
- 3:30to the point where in this point in radio history where television is making more
- 3:35of than radio. But we've gone long enough with this introduction, so let's
- 3:38go ahead and take a listen to today's episode. This one from May the
- 3:44twenty fifth, nineteen fifty one, is called A strong offense is the best
- 3:49defense. The Amazing Mister Malone Operator definitely the Office of John J. Malone.
- 4:11The National Broadcasting Company presents The Amazing Mister Malone, an exciting half power
- 4:16of mysterray starring George Petrie as the lawyer who's practiced before every type of bar
- 4:21has become a legend. All hotel is the city of Chicago, the time,
- 4:26the present, and the hero of these weekly adventures, the Amazing Mister
- 4:30Malone. Malone's the name, John J. Malone, Attorney in constlor of
- 4:45law and now. It's often said that no visit to Chicago was complete without
- 4:48taking in the Field Museum, the stockyards, and yours. Truly, and
- 4:54as you probably guess, I'm the one who often says it, my hobby
- 4:59is collecting cliches. Tonight, I'd like to trot out for your inspection.
- 5:02The little number that goes A strong offense is the best defense. There's a
- 5:08case in point I give you Steve Kemper. Mister Kemper is the stockier of
- 5:15the two gentlemen getting out of the elevator on the fourth floor of the Belvedere.
- 5:18He owns the Bangor Club, the Lusco's gambling joint this side of Vegas.
- 5:24And if you're wondering why Steve keeps patting his right hand code pocket as
- 5:27he marches along, that's because he's carrying his life insurance there. But obviously
- 5:31his associated Curly Michaels, doesn't approve of that policy. Don't like it,
- 5:35Steve, I don't like it one bit. Then maybe you better wait downstairs,
- 5:40Curly. Oh look, Steve, I didn't mean it that well,
- 5:42I did. I suppose friend Willard gets tough. I only hope he does.
- 5:46Okay, you'll be done in the lung. No, you better make
- 5:48it in the car. I may want to leave real fast. I get
- 5:51you. Oh is it rum status? That's the second Hello? Will it?
- 6:01Wait a minute? I'm even willing to wait too, But suppose I
- 6:05do it inside? Kemper's the name Steve Kemper. Oh I take it you've
- 6:12heard of me? Who hasn't. I was in your joint A couple of
- 6:14weeks ago. A nice layout you got there. My daughter isn't bad either,
- 6:18Vicky. They don't follow your campoo. No, you didn't waste any
- 6:21time following her. Maybe the shoes on the other foot. Maybe she's the
- 6:25one who did the chasing, who checked that Bagasy fella, you're going to
- 6:29stay away from Vicky? Do you understand? Who think you of being a
- 6:30little melodramatic? That type of farmer went out with East Slim. I'm warning
- 6:34you will it? You're warning me? Did it ever a cur to you?
- 6:36Why I might be in love with Vicky? Oh, don't make me
- 6:39laugh? What about your wife? Vicky knows all about Marcia? Does she
- 6:42know all about your other women? Francis Carson, Paula Lewis, nor a
- 6:46Stone? Shall I go on? You've been doing some research? Uh huh
- 6:49weuve kemper. I know I'm no barggain, but neither is your daughter.
- 6:54What did you say if you ever do any checking there with a page?
- 6:58We are two of a kind, right out of the same dick. Maybe
- 7:00that's why she's got it familiar you journey a Jordan car drop, Stop kidding,
- 7:05Come on, come on a drop only allow one chance for cutting on.
- 7:14You wanna play rough? Ho will to complain like that? I gotta
- 7:16hunch him a lot better at this game than you. I'm telling you,
- 7:28Steeve, you should have stopped up first to see a doctor before I brought
- 7:30you home. I said, no, Curly, keys are in my side
- 7:33pocket. I got him. It's so small and so we would think I
- 7:36was never here before. Ye me and Curly helped me in the better than
- 7:44fast. I didn't want it too late? Well, aren't you a lovely
- 7:47sight? I had an accident, Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was
- 7:50all my fault, Vicky. You see this car was coming on, not
- 7:53a lion, Curly. I just finished talking to Willard, and you know,
- 7:57yes, indeed, I know. I'm only sorry I didn't kill you,
- 8:01Vicky. I mean no, honey, that's no way to talk your
- 8:03own man's maybe. Whatever I tried to do, whatever you try to do,
- 8:09why can't you mind your own business? Well, if you knew what
- 8:11he said about you, and every word was true, Vicky, every single
- 8:15word. And you know why, because you've always fied on, because you
- 8:18never let me do anything I want. That's because it's gon go on say
- 8:22it. It's because you were afraid I might take after my mother. Well,
- 8:26I don't blame her for running off. That's you. I can imagine
- 8:30what it must have been like being married to you, always watching, always
- 8:33fighting. It's not true. I don't know how she stood it as long
- 8:35as she did. Well, I've had my feel too. I'm going to
- 8:39live my own Picky, where are you're going? Thinky? Come back?
- 8:43Maybe I haven't handled it right, but whatever I do. Hey, nobody
- 9:03own? Oh, I swear, Okay, I'm coming Hello alone? Do
- 9:15I know you? I think so. The voice is familiar, but I
- 9:18can't place the face. What happened to You're old one? That's not funny,
- 9:22Malone? Well, my writer goes to bed at three? Can I
- 9:24come in? Look? Steve? You know my office is in the press.
- 9:28Could bullying her? You're never there? Why didn't I think of that?
- 9:31Yeah? Nice, I want to drink. You look like you could
- 9:33stand one. No, I'll pass, but I'll let that stop you.
- 9:37It never does. I'll come right to the point, Malone, for my
- 9:41money, you're the best lawyer in Chicas. I'll never mind the con Steve,
- 9:43what's on your mind? Vicky is running around with a wrong old party
- 9:48named Willard? Grant. I tried to break it up tonight, putting your
- 9:52face in his fist. Yeah, obviously it didn't work. No, what
- 9:56do I do now? Illegally, you can't do a thing, can't force
- 10:00a man out of time because you don't like the way parts his hair.
- 10:01There's nothing to prevent you from arriving at an agreement that will affect the same
- 10:05thing. What do you mean buy him off? Of course you went to
- 10:07this Willard and lay it on the line. Now if I were handling it,
- 10:11why don't you you get him to agree to leave Vicky alone. I'll
- 10:13pay whatever fee you think it's fair. Look, Steve, I hate like
- 10:16the devil. I'll tell you this, but you're a little Vicky. I
- 10:18suppose we leave her out of this. You take care of Willard. I'll
- 10:22take care of you. How much can I offer him? Ten grand?
- 10:28You don't care how you spend my money? What it's just a bad joke.
- 10:31I figure I left most of that door at your place, trying to
- 10:33make a seven the hard way with two three and a half. Okay,
- 10:37Steve may got your check. I'll do what I can. Yes, I
- 10:56beg your pardon. What's for you haven't done anything. Yeah, but I'm
- 11:01afraid I made a mistake. The desk clerk told me this was Willard Grant's
- 11:03room. I must have known what he was talking about. Oh, if
- 11:05you're the hotel chamber maid, I'm moving here myself. He's wasting your time.
- 11:09I'm staying at the Stockton. Mister alone, John J. Malone.
- 11:13Not be amazing? Ain't it awful? Well? This is a pleasure,
- 11:16mister Malone. I can't tell you I'm here. You've got company, will
- 11:20It? Thought you were gone. I was on my way, darling,
- 11:24when I ran into this gentleman. It's been real charming. Malone. Let's
- 11:28do it again. Sometimes you said with Stockton, I said, and the
- 11:31name Marcia Grast. Oh then you're his wife. Yes, but don't let
- 11:37that stop, lovely girl. I'm glad you approved that. Someone would think
- 11:43you too don't get along? Would then if they judge by appearances, I
- 11:46think you've gut. My name is Malone. I'm a lawyer, will It.
- 11:48I represent Steve Kemper. Get out. At first, I'd like to
- 11:52show you something. Well why you impressed? One way? Take it to
- 11:56La on the super cheap and a check for ten thousand dollars. You know
- 12:00what you can do with it? Don't be your sap friend. That's as
- 12:01high aste will go. You won't get any more through Vicky. How would
- 12:05you like a punch in the nose? How's that? What's the matter?
- 12:07Don't you think I can let me fill your muscle up? Mylone? Yeah?
- 12:11I guess you could. Okay, Well, don't fret yourself. I'm
- 12:13practically on my way. Bang clet jeeve. Yeah alone, I just saw
- 12:31it, boy will it? Grant? And he threw me out? How
- 12:33much does he want? Brace yourself for a shock, daddy? I think
- 12:37he's in love with our Vicky. Oh, don't talk like an idiot.
- 12:41It does seem impossible, doesn't it. He wasn't interested in ten thousand?
- 12:46Okay, Malone? Thanks anyway, what are you gonna do? I don't
- 12:50know yet. I'll let you know when I make up my mind. Yeah,
- 13:07I wonder if I have the right party? Are you Willard Grant?
- 13:09Yes? Well, this is indeed a pleasure, mister Grant. You don't
- 13:13know how i'd look forward to this, Leslie Brett, so you've never heard
- 13:18of me? I don't know if it spoil your day, little man,
- 13:20Chicago's follow people I never heard of. I suppose that's true enough. All
- 13:24right, what's on your mind, Leslie? Well, I've been asked to
- 13:26deliver something to your Where did I put it? Oh? Here it is?
- 13:31What's the idea that Canon Handsome? Isn't he? I call him Marvin?
- 13:37I wish you wouldn't take this personally. Believe me, I have nothing
- 13:39against you. Thanks, I mean that sincerely. Who sent you here?
- 13:43Anyway? And you couldn't expect me to devose the name of my clients Steve
- 13:46Camper, wasn't it. Please don't press me, mister Grant, as much
- 13:50as I'd like to oblige. Look, if you don't put that thing away,
- 13:54I'm gonna take it and ram it down your throat. I think you'll
- 13:58mean that. I'm out certainly well in that case, so that to forgive
- 14:03me Willard that I can't stand in touched. You're listening to the amazing mister
- 14:20Malone. In years gone by, immigrant ships used to dock in New York,
- 14:24filled with the people who had heard legends in the Old Country about opportunity
- 14:28to be found in America. Well, they soon found out that in America
- 14:31is everywhere else money and the things money can buy don't go on trees.
- 14:37It's our American economic system which sets our standard of living. It's important for
- 14:41all of us to know just how this economic system of ours works as opposed
- 14:45to any other. So here's the thought for today. Why not do a
- 14:48little reading up on the workings of our economy. Go to your library and
- 14:52find a good, easy text and study it. You'll find it helps you
- 14:56to understand the important issues of the day. Now back to the amazing mister
- 15:01Malone. So, like they say in Time magazine, death with a little
- 15:15forty five came for Willard Grant at the ripe old age of thirty four.
- 15:20But the first I knew of it was some twelve hours later. I was
- 15:22relaxing in the steamroom that Gusu's getting a massage out of the fog. I
- 15:26heard a familiar voice and it robbed me the wrong way. That's a lovely
- 15:31back you got there, Malone. And wouldn't I love to plant a life
- 15:33in it? That wouldn't be Lieutenant Brooks? Would I want to bet?
- 15:37Come on, Malone, it's time to be amazing. What are you babbling
- 15:39about? We've got a fellow downtown who's crying for your services? Oh Steve
- 15:43Kemper. And what's Steve alleged to have done? Oh? That's what I
- 15:46love about you, Malone, You're so legal. What's he alleged to have
- 15:48done? There's nothing alleged about it. He killed a boy named Willard Grant.
- 15:52I mean will it's dead. What most people generally are when they've been
- 15:56murdered. And you think Steve did it? Ain't I a fool? You
- 15:58certainly are. Come on, I want to talk to him. You look,
- 16:02brooks On, Steve's lawyer. You can't stop me from singing an I
- 16:03can. If you insist on going like that, put your pants on,
- 16:07Malone, or don't you care how people talk? I tell him alone,
- 16:19I didn't kill Willard. You've got to believe that, Oh I do,
- 16:22Steve. Lieutenant Brooks is the boy you got to convince. Go on,
- 16:26Steve, you want to try. I did. Don't be a sad Brooks.
- 16:27Whereis his motive? Or you're joking? Of course? Don't you think
- 16:30we know? He sent you around to get rid of Willard, and Steve
- 16:33made an attempt on Willard's life. Yes, so one time? Was Willard
- 16:36killed? Three this morning three am here and that lets me out why you
- 16:40got all of my Sure I was at the club. One hundred people must
- 16:42have seen me. So what so what? How can one man be in
- 16:45two places at the same time? And who said he was malone? I
- 16:48didn't say Steve actually shot Willard? You didn't know? No, I said
- 16:52he was responsible. He hired someone else to do the job. How do
- 16:55you know that? Well, a desk clerk told us that five minutes before
- 16:57the shooting, an odd looking character asked for Willard Grant's rule. The desk
- 17:02clerk also tell you that this odd looking character was hired by Steve. Well,
- 17:06doesn't it figure out? Not the way I add it unless you take
- 17:07Steve for an awful jerny. No, No, I think he's a smart
- 17:10operator. Or you think a smart operator would pull so many boners? How
- 17:12do you suppose it would look to a jury? How you tell me you're
- 17:15the lawyer? All right? They'd never believe that Steve had a fight with
- 17:18Willard, try to gun him, buy him off, and arrange for his
- 17:21murder, all in the space of twenty four hours. It's two pass Then
- 17:25you believe it's a frame, don't you. I'll let you know after I
- 17:27think it over. Do that. Listen, Steve, what do you think
- 17:30might have framed you? Nobody? How about your club manager, Curly Michael
- 17:34Yati of mind? Well, what happens to your club? If anything happens
- 17:40to you goes to Vicky? Imagine I almost forgot about her. What are
- 17:44you getting at? How was Vicky's reaction when she heard you had trouble with
- 17:47Willard? I didn't tell her about it now, but Willard might have.
- 17:49And suppose he got so disgusted he packed her in nuts. I will soon
- 17:52find out. You're not to bother Vicky. Understand you under estimate my charm,
- 17:56Steve, who says I'm gonna bother? Sorry? Our times up?
- 17:59Right, lieutenant? Right? And let me ask it's time. I was
- 18:02amazing to one of those things, just one of those crazy things, one
- 18:19of those bells. But now and then, I mean, yes, hello,
- 18:26big what do you want? No? Love her? That's no way
- 18:29to talk to someone. To think you weren't glad to see me? Be
- 18:32right? If you're looking for my father isn't here. I know I just
- 18:34saw him. He's in a bad spot. I hope he burns. Careful
- 18:40lover, you don't know what you're saying. I hate him and I want
- 18:42to be there when they strap him into the chair. I don't think they
- 18:45will. They wouldn't have quit him with him alone. It's I am representing
- 18:49it. Let's Malone. If you get him off, I'll kill you.
- 18:53I mean that, I'll kill you, fool. Your father always did everything
- 18:57he could for you, as it was always in the theory, always fine.
- 19:02We thought Willard was no good. Point. Willard was a married man.
- 19:07He was the only man I ever loved. He was no good And
- 19:10what makes you think I'm any better? We were two of a kind,
- 19:14he used to say, right out of the same deck. And he was
- 19:18right. You'd have left you in a month never, no matter what he
- 19:21said. He never did he say money of bins. Maybe I can guess
- 19:26the boys you were living on borrowed times. Suppose Willard told you we thought
- 19:30you were more trouble than you were worse, you'll get out. Well,
- 19:33we got to think of things like that. Are you going to get out
- 19:34of here? Sure, lover, but you're such a fascinating creature. Don't
- 19:40blame me if I come back. Well, it's about time, mister Malone,
- 19:52huh, have you any idea? How long I've been waiting? How
- 19:56did you get in? I use these? You're a full one. Not
- 20:02shut the door, won't you? It'll be kind of stuffy. Worse comes
- 20:06to worse. I can always let a little air in through you with this,
- 20:10you know what I mean? Hey, that's real good. I thought
- 20:12so. Now I suppose you sit down over there over here. That's fine.
- 20:22You're probably wondering who I am. I got an idea. You're the
- 20:26odd looking character the desk clerk saw shortly before Willard was gone? What did
- 20:30you call me? Now? That was a quote. You'll think you're smart,
- 20:33don't you. You're one of those forceful men who knows all the answers.
- 20:36Well, I careful you, and you're you're working yourself into a snith.
- 20:38I've got a good mind to No. No, you're not going to
- 20:44make me angry. You thought you would, didn't you believe me? That
- 20:48was the furthest thing from my mind. Don't tell me you're scared of a
- 20:49little gun, scared of death. They remind me of weddings. Very funny,
- 20:53I guess not. Well, what can I do for you? Nothing?
- 20:56But you could do something for yourself, such as such as getting up
- 21:00Steve Kemper as a client. Why should I do that because a friend of
- 21:03mine wants you to? You wouldn't consider telling me this friend's name? What
- 21:07do you think? Yeah? I think you wouldn't. And if I continue
- 21:11to represent Steve, I'd like to see you again, only next time Marvin
- 21:15will do the talking bout me. Marvin my gun? You say that's real?
- 21:21Cure you and Marvin the bobbs between you always go out together. You'll
- 21:26find out? Or what do you say? Mister Malone? What can I
- 21:29say? I'd be a fool who represents Steve after this. Thanks for dropping
- 21:33around, friend. I hope you won't go to the trouble again. It
- 21:51second, oh, Marcia? Oh and I thought I made a definite impression.
- 21:56Don't you remember we met in Willard's hotel room? Oh? Yes,
- 22:00yes, you were on your way in and you were on your way out.
- 22:03Yes. How could I forget? The name's Malone, isn't it?
- 22:04Uh huh? You did invite me to drop around, yes, and I'm
- 22:07mad it coming. Thanks. Hey, hey, this is quite a layoff.
- 22:12I'd certainly hate to pick up the tab for this. Let me take
- 22:15you to lover you got it? Is it down? No mind? If
- 22:19I do? Don't things a little crowded to the two of us on this
- 22:23chair? You're planning the sofa a lot more comfortable. Okay, let's try
- 22:26it. No, No, I mean by yourself. But I can sit
- 22:30by myself at home. Well after a alone You've got to consider my position.
- 22:33My poor husband is lying dead in the morning. Yeah, you're really
- 22:36broken up about that, aren't you? What's your death? And I suppose
- 22:38you were upset when he said he was going to get a divorce and marry
- 22:41Vicky? Who told you that? But then he did plan to marry her?
- 22:45Never would have gone through with it. He was in love with her,
- 22:48He never would have lasted. Now you sort of that? And what
- 22:51made you send Junior around to frighten me off? Who the character who keeps
- 22:55company with Marvin? Are you on your mind? Well? What you must
- 22:57be if you thought that would do the trick? Okay, what's wrong with
- 23:00me? Anyway? No one seems to want me around. First Willard,
- 23:03then VICKI, Now you are you going to get out of here? Yeah?
- 23:06But it's lucky I know a police lieutenant. It is crazy to have
- 23:07me around. It reminds me I better check on him too. Hello Tennant.
- 23:18Oh no, look, Malone, If you don't quit hanging around,
- 23:22police said quarters. People who took so they might look. Look Malone,
- 23:26will you brief me on one thing? You're a lawyer? No, I'm
- 23:29a lawyer. Yet, why can't you act like the rest of them?
- 23:30Get your suit, priss, go to court. My way is better.
- 23:33This way, I don't have to drag around a briefcase. I'm telling you,
- 23:36brook you're better. Let Steve go. He didn't kill Willard. I
- 23:37didn't say he did. I said he was responsible. He odd looking character
- 23:41to the actual shooting. I suppose I told you I saw him, Gwen.
- 23:44He was waiting for me in my apartment. He let him get away.
- 23:45Oh he let me get away. Why didn't you stop him? Are
- 23:48you serious? He could have killed me? That's no excuse, I tell
- 23:52you, Brooks, this is our boy who was carrying a forty five that
- 23:53he kept referring to his Marvin. But why didn't he shoot you? You
- 23:57seem disappointed? I am, I am all right. What was he after?
- 24:02He wanted me to drop Steve Kemper as a client, and he couldn't
- 24:03have been working for U. Rika. You finally saw it. You're gonna
- 24:06let Steve go. Well, here's your head, Brooks, I crucify in
- 24:08court. I told you before a case against Steve was too pat Now,
- 24:12who would want me out of this man? Me? For what? Come
- 24:15on? I'm not comming. Okay, okay, a lot of Steve's release.
- 24:18Now you're talking? How about you, Tuck? Who sent that boy
- 24:21up to see you? It's easy? The same party who was behind Willid's
- 24:23murder. That tells me a lot. Who was there? His wife?
- 24:26Oh, Willard's wife, Marcia. Oh so you think she's a foul miscreant.
- 24:29I know she is. She's got the best motive of all. Willard
- 24:32was gonna divorce her to marry Vicky. So this is a little girl whould
- 24:34never let go of a meal ticket? Did you see her? Sweet at
- 24:37a stock him m I bet it runs at least seventy five bucks a day,
- 24:41one hundred. I checked. Well, where do you think the money
- 24:42came from? She was probably breeding Willard to death, and when she saw
- 24:45the ride was over, she I don't kill right at malone. There's just
- 24:48one teeny thing wrong with that theory. I feel like a cad for even
- 24:52mentioning it right. Well, Marcia happens to be the daughter of Sylvester Braden,
- 24:56the guy who owns half a stock. Yah. Yeah, yeah,
- 25:00that girl's got more doll than Fort Knox, so she had will It killed
- 25:03for his insurance. Eh. I guess I was wrong. You guess you
- 25:06are wrong. Well, I'll say one thing for you, Malone. You
- 25:10may not be amusing, but you sit in the are amazing. You're listening
- 25:22to the amazing mister Malone. If you bought us defense bonds ten years ago,
- 25:27they'll mature this year. However, you don't have to redeem them and
- 25:30buy new bonds to continue getting your interest. Congress has just passed the law
- 25:33to extend the life of these same bonds you now hold for ten years more.
- 25:37You can, of course cash your bonds now, but think twice before
- 25:41you do. There's no surer, safer investment. I think that for yourself
- 25:45and for America, you want to keep your bonds and keep on buying them
- 25:48too, because defenses everybody's job now, and there's no investment that helps your
- 25:55country more. Today and now back to the amazing, mister Malone. You
- 26:07can talk about your luck of the Irish, but to me, it's strictly
- 26:10heresaying here. I had it so neatly figured out that Marsha Grant was responsible
- 26:15for her husband's murder, and Lieutenant Brooks had to go and drop his bomb
- 26:19after the explosion died down. I sat there for five minutes without saying a
- 26:22word, which must have established some sort of a record. Malone, your
- 26:26mouth, so it'll close it. Listen, Lieutenant, I made a mistake.
- 26:30Okay, so I was wrong, but I see it all. Now.
- 26:33There's one character we've been overlooking in this little drama, all right?
- 26:36Who Curry? Michael? Curly Michael. But he works for Steve. That
- 26:38doesn't preclude extracurricular activities. It could have double crossed. But you heard Steve
- 26:41say if anything happened to him, the club went to his daughter. Well,
- 26:44you know, Vicky, how much effort do you think it would take
- 26:45the swindler? Not much? There you are, if I will get your
- 26:48ten. Curly was the boy who sent that gunman around to scare me off.
- 26:52You know, I hate to say this, Malone, but you might
- 26:53have a point there. Well, they ain't gonna do us any good here
- 26:56let's go stick it in, Curly. Well, you're guys, miss too
- 27:08your any house? Lemon here, I get a light on yourself. Shoot
- 27:11five gram yout faded and coming out the papa little foreign and free. I'll
- 27:18do it. It's the point. Hats the point? I got two birds
- 27:23that says he's right? Oh, how are you counseling? Hi? Curly?
- 27:26We want a word with you? We you know, Lieutenant Brooks Surrey
- 27:30take over the game? Will you take I'm going to be busy for a
- 27:32while. Let's go to Steve's office. Well, what's on your mind?
- 27:36Concern? What's always on my mind? That ain't going to get Steve out?
- 27:40Why haven't you heard, Curly, Steve has been released. What?
- 27:42Yeah, I'm surprised he's not here yet. He left ten minutes before weeks.
- 27:47Maybe he stopped off at the apartment to see Vicky. What do you
- 27:49think of her, Curly? Don't ask? I am. Well, if
- 27:53she was my kid, I'd break her back. You never appreciate anything Steve's
- 27:57done for anything happened is Steve? This club would go to her? I
- 28:00know. I guess it wouldn't be any trouble for someone that Connor out of
- 28:03the would serve it right? The note good? Look go on, Curly,
- 28:08what were you saying? But pee Steve and might tickle to see you.
- 28:11The fellas were just telling me. I came in. It looked like
- 28:14you were telling them, don't stop on my accounts. Okay. If you
- 28:18weren't blind, you'd see she's her mother all over again at thirty rotten.
- 28:21Let you got anything else to say? Uh, that's set my piece,
- 28:26and I suppose it's my turn. Steve. Suppose I told you that Curly
- 28:29tried to frame you for Willard's murder. Yeah? Crazy? You know how
- 28:32it feels about Vicky if you went to the cherry take this place away from
- 28:34her in twenty minutes? Yeah? Wrong? Show me where Curly's been with
- 28:37me for fifteen years? So last Christmas I offered him a twenty five percent
- 28:41piece of the joint. I suppose he turned it down. He certainly did.
- 28:45Who needs it? What do you know? I know you better do
- 28:48some fast talking. Looks like guy was wrong again, Lieutenant. Looks like
- 28:52you got any more bright ideas? Yeah, and this one's at DLLY.
- 28:56I looked alone. I got a mine at Lieutenant, asked yourself this?
- 29:00Who was the first to know if Steve's fight with Willard the first to know.
- 29:03I flop when I try to buy him off. VICKI no, Steve,
- 29:07what are you talking about? I'm sorry it had end like this,
- 29:11Steve, But every once in a while one of my own clients turns out
- 29:15to be Believe me, it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Just one
- 29:41of those crazy things, same thing, one of those band fat now in
- 29:47name ring very just one of those things. Mary, ol Oh, it's
- 29:53something bothering you att Yeah, yeah, Why I don't take off my shoe
- 29:57and put you to death with him? I said all along that Steve was
- 30:02the party behind Willard's murdered Why did you let him go? Why did I
- 30:06let who said the case was too fast? Well? It was sending that
- 30:10odd looking character around scare me off was a beautiful touch. It didn't seem
- 30:14possible that Steve was behind That was he, of course, and that convinced
- 30:17us he was being framed. I still want to know why you bet on
- 30:19Steve will It all came down a motivation, and Steve had the best motive
- 30:22of all. He was the one who really hated Willard. He called he
- 30:26was bad for Vicky, so he got rid of him. Oh why didn't
- 30:29he kill Willard himself? He tried it once in all far he got Oh,
- 30:32that hired guns was a much better bet. Incidentally, you pick him
- 30:36up yet, yeah? Yeah? Yeah? And Cicero. His name is
- 30:38Leslie Brett. What about Marvin Marvin? Oh, Marvin Marvin? You mean
- 30:42his gun? We found that on him too. Not surely they were going
- 30:45steady Yet I'm alone. I can't get over it. Why talk about switches?
- 30:51There were two here? One the cop was right all along. It'll
- 30:56probably never happen again. Maybe he made But secondly, secondly, this is
- 31:03the first case I remember where the guy who was making like a private detective
- 31:07wasn't fopped on. Ahead, Jay, that's right. Yeah, Well,
- 31:11let's hope that never happens again. Good Night alone, ever hear the story
- 31:27of the incurable Gamber. This boy would take a chance on anything he found
- 31:33out. Murder was a bad breast. I'll tell you all about him next
- 31:37week. So why not pick me up in my office at the same time.
- 31:40I'll be waiting for you. Good Night. George Peepree was starred as
- 31:48John J. Malone with Larry Haynes as Lieutenant Brooks. Our program is written
- 31:53by Gene Wang and directed by Richard Lewis. The Amazing Mister Malone is based
- 31:59on the character by Craig Rice and produced by Bernard L. Schubert. The
- 32:02events and characters in this story were entirely fictitional, and any resemblance to persons
- 32:07living or dead is entirely coincidental. Arthur Gary speaking, the Amazing Mister Malone
- 32:13has come to you from New York. Three times mean good Times on NVC
- 32:22this Sunday, You're invited to meet one of your favorite families here on NVC
- 32:24The Blandings Carry Grant and Betsy Drake Store every Sunday, and another delightful Adventures
- 32:30the Proud but Confused owners of the Famous Greenhouse. And on Theater Guilt on
- 32:35the Air. This Sunday, you'll hear a one hour adaptation of Bring Gardner's
- 32:37famous story, Elma the Great, starring Paul Douglas. Elma the Great is
- 32:42an absurd and heartwarming story with a blundering hero who's been described as solid bone
- 32:46above the ears, but the best pitcher in the three I League. It's
- 32:52another outstanding production by Theater Guild on the air this Sunday with Paul Douglas in
- 32:55the title role, and don't forget from Mystery. This Sunday, you'll hear
- 32:59a new private I mister Mothole, who arrives with a swash of the buckle,
- 33:04and I for a pretty girl and a handy talent for solving murders.
- 33:07This is NBC, the National Broadcasting Company. Welcome back well. In addition
- 33:23to George Petray, this episode we featured Larry Haynes as Lieutenant Brooks, and
- 33:31Haynes is another one of those actors who really benefited during the mid early to
- 33:39mid fifties with a lot of roles. We will hear him later on this
- 33:46season in Manhunt, which is actually from earlier, and then an Easy Money
- 33:52which is later, and then eventually we'll hear him as my camera in that
- 33:59hammer guy striking. Here is how consistent the show is. In this one,
- 34:09we have a different network, different producer, a lot of things very
- 34:17different, but and we still have the same opening plot set up in the
- 34:25same theme and same closing, which isn't something you see consistently across all networks.
- 34:32I did kind of find the daughter's statement of what he said, as
- 34:46about them being identical, two pis in the pot just because he said that,
- 34:52I didn't make it. So there are people who when they're around others
- 34:59will kind of flacked their values and virtues and such. So there's an indication
- 35:04from the story that per you know that perhaps she had a bit of a
- 35:08history, but nevertheless an interesting way altered a way to look at it all
- 35:15right, Listener comments and feedback now. Derek rits in, Thanks Adam and
- 35:21great work. I've been tuning in for a couple of years now I'm planned
- 35:24to keep doing so. Thanks so much, Derek and Joel emails in.
- 35:29This is a very entertaining show. How many programs are left to hit here,
- 35:34Like Pete Kelly's Blues. It had a short run. You do a
- 35:37great service bringing these shows to us. Thanks so much. Well, you
- 35:42know it had it had actually I would say a decent run. We just
- 35:46have very few episodes of it. But in terms of how many weeks we
- 35:52have left, we have seven more weeks of this show and then we're going
- 35:58to delve into the Australian transcriptions. There's four of those, and so we
- 36:05have eleven more weeks of mister Malone to enjoy. All Right, Well,
- 36:10I think that'll do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow with Johnny Fletcher.
- 36:15Mystery Yours truly Johnny Dollar will be heard on Friday, and then join
