Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I'll jump into.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Actually any kind of recently joined the previous sport In them,
- 0:08Speaker 2: I played guitar alongside Justin who's not in the call
- 0:12Speaker 2: with us. But yeah, album coming out very soon, Very excited, beautiful.
- 0:19Speaker 1: What else have we got?
- 0:24Speaker 3: I'm Lucas, I'm the drummer. Nothing else to add for
- 0:30Speaker 3: the album.
- 0:36Speaker 4: Hi, I am Mary and I am the singer of
- 0:39Speaker 4: to Octavia and the album Melodrama comes out on Halloween.
- 0:43Speaker 1: So get it at.
- 0:45Speaker 5: Least your debut album, Melodrama this Friday, October thirty first.
- 0:49Speaker 1: So how do you feel that's getting close?
- 0:54Speaker 4: Very exciting. Yeah, this album has been in the works
- 0:57Speaker 4: for a very long time, and yeah, it's really exciting
- 1:01Speaker 4: to finally get it out.
- 1:04Speaker 2: It's consumed more than the past year of my life
- 1:08Speaker 2: at the moment, but I think more than a year
- 1:10Speaker 2: of everyone else's.
- 1:14Speaker 5: Could he dive into a bit deeper musically for us
- 1:16Speaker 5: to tell us what you were going for?
- 1:21Speaker 4: I think yeah, we all were sort of on the
- 1:25Speaker 4: same page when we were writing it about taking whatever
- 1:30Speaker 4: it was going to be. We didn't know it was
- 1:31Speaker 4: going to be an album at the time, but I
- 1:34Speaker 4: guess more of a darker tone than the previous EP,
- 1:39Speaker 4: wonder Land, which is a bit more upbeat, a bit
- 1:42Speaker 4: more poppy rocky. We decided, oh, I guess naturally that
- 1:46Speaker 4: we'd go back to a more metal influencer, like a
- 1:51Speaker 4: our Roots really and yeah, that led to experimenting more
- 1:58Speaker 4: and more with different kinds of sound and things, and
- 2:01Speaker 4: when we decided this is going to be like a
- 2:04Speaker 4: full length album, that's when we really locked in and
- 2:07Speaker 4: had the freedom to sort of experiment and you know,
- 2:10Speaker 4: like one thing might not be a single or whatever,
- 2:12Speaker 4: but on a full length you can. You can spread
- 2:15Speaker 4: those out and have nice cool things in the middle
- 2:19Speaker 4: for experimenting, and yeah, I know. It was a good
- 2:22Speaker 4: fun writing experience.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Yeah, it all happened like actually, yeah, really naturally in
- 2:30Speaker 3: that the earlier some of the older songs on the
- 2:32Speaker 3: album I think were written around the same time that
- 2:36Speaker 3: we were writing our RCP Wonderland, so it did kind
- 2:39Speaker 3: of Yeah, we had these songs and we kind of
- 2:41Speaker 3: built off it from there.
- 2:44Speaker 5: You released a single something in the Water, What's My Name,
- 2:47Speaker 5: Chalk is Cheap, and Bury Me? So are there a
- 2:49Speaker 5: good slightly propresentation of what you expect?
- 2:51Speaker 1: That's all.
- 2:55Speaker 4: I would say. Those are, Yeah, I feel like that
- 3:00Speaker 4: they represent a yeah, I guess a general idea of
- 3:07Speaker 4: what the album is, its moods and elements and things
- 3:10Speaker 4: like that, for sure.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Hm, just a tack onto that. I feel like they
- 3:15Speaker 2: kind of sit in like the comfortable middle ground of
- 3:18Speaker 2: the album. There's definitely darker slash heavier stuff on the
- 3:22Speaker 2: album in addition to lighter or wright us off the
- 3:27Speaker 2: stuff on the album.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I think the.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Tracks released so far I kind of like the in
- 3:31Speaker 2: between of I guess the two extremities of the album.
- 3:36Speaker 4: Yeah, there's some surprises in there for sure.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Touched on us a little bit before made.
- 3:41Speaker 5: But you mentioned the heavier, darker direction on this, so
- 3:45Speaker 5: it is move forward that it's going to keep continuing
- 3:49Speaker 5: to explore or is that just for this album.
- 3:54Speaker 4: That's a good question. I think we haven't thought about
- 3:58Speaker 4: that yet.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Yea.
- 4:01Speaker 5: Now, how does it differ musically? I guess then from
- 4:07Speaker 5: your breakthrough EP Somewhere in the World, not of a Dream.
- 4:13Speaker 4: I think it's more. Oh, I was gonna say, I
- 4:17Speaker 4: think it's a bit more refined. I think Somewhere in
- 4:21Speaker 4: the World we were still sort of finding out. Somewhere
- 4:24Speaker 4: in the World and Wonderland are both sort of like
- 4:26Speaker 4: finding out what two Octavia could be, and then this
- 4:31Speaker 4: full length album is sort of a representation of where
- 4:37Speaker 4: we sort of landed after those two yeah collections of songs.
- 4:45Speaker 3: I guess.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Some it's it's a very brave move from you, guys.
- 4:49Speaker 5: You know, like to say that those two EPs are
- 4:51Speaker 5: different sonically and you sort of built your fan base
- 4:54Speaker 5: on those, So most bands would play it safe and
- 4:57Speaker 5: they just rehashed that winning formula. Bit good on you
- 4:59Speaker 5: guys exchange taking that risk and on your debut go
- 5:03Speaker 5: on a bit more balls down.
- 5:04Speaker 1: It's I say balls you Maybe.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Guys le done appreciate it.
- 5:09Speaker 5: Yeah, But would you would to say that fans of
- 5:14Speaker 5: the older stuff would feel alienated with this sow would jo?
- 5:19Speaker 4: I don't think so. I think fans always wanted to
- 5:24Speaker 4: us to go heavier from the start.
- 5:28Speaker 3: I think we do like the album does feel like
- 5:30Speaker 3: it it will tick boxes for someone who's been a
- 5:35Speaker 3: fan at any point. I think it's it's got a
- 5:38Speaker 3: bit of everything from that's taken from our experiences, from
- 5:42Speaker 3: every other release that we've done.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I also feel like, even though it is I
- 5:47Speaker 2: guess a fair bit darker than the previous stuff, instrumentally
- 5:52Speaker 2: and obviously vocally, it still feels very too Octavia to me. Yeah,
- 5:59Speaker 2: even though it's I guess a little bit of a
- 6:01Speaker 2: different approach, I feel like you can definitely see the
- 6:05Speaker 2: hopefully people still like it.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Revention.
- 6:09Speaker 5: Like if you've had a couple of EPs out now
- 6:11Speaker 5: you guys have been around for a fair while, but
- 6:14Speaker 5: going into your debut album.
- 6:15Speaker 1: But it's a pretty big deal.
- 6:16Speaker 5: So as a band, what sorts of things do you
- 6:19Speaker 5: discuss leading into that, Like you work out the battle plan,
- 6:22Speaker 5: how you want to do things, or do you just
- 6:24Speaker 5: put the best of what you got together and throw
- 6:26Speaker 5: it out there.
- 6:29Speaker 4: We definitely had a battle plan for sure, like a
- 6:32Speaker 4: lot of meetings.
- 6:36Speaker 1: What what was discussing those? Like what sorts of things
- 6:38Speaker 1: were we after?
- 6:41Speaker 4: Well, I wasn't listening so the other guys can the
- 6:46Speaker 4: other guys can answer that.
- 6:49Speaker 1: No, I think.
- 6:52Speaker 3: We I think yeah, because it wasn't planned to initially
- 6:56Speaker 3: be the album. I think a lot of the bits
- 6:59Speaker 3: and pieces did kind of come together without that plan
- 7:03Speaker 3: in mind, and I think that once it did, we
- 7:05Speaker 3: could kind of see the bigger picture, Like we were thinking,
- 7:10Speaker 3: I guess what we kind of wanted to say on
- 7:12Speaker 3: the album that it is a bit bit darker, and
- 7:15Speaker 3: it does explore some things that we haven't really explored before,
- 7:20Speaker 3: So I guess, yeah, just trying to push the envelope
- 7:22Speaker 3: a little bit more in that regard, I think was
- 7:24Speaker 3: the battle plan a bit.
- 7:26Speaker 5: I noticed there's no song on the album called Melodrama,
- 7:30Speaker 5: which to me implies that there's the greatest significance to
- 7:33Speaker 5: the title.
- 7:37Speaker 4: The melodrama actually comes from a lyric in talk is Cheap,
- 7:44Speaker 4: and Lucas really attached to that that lyric and especially
- 7:50Speaker 4: that word as a sort of representation of not just
- 7:56Speaker 4: the song talk is Cheap, but the entire album, and
- 7:59Speaker 4: it's sort of yeah, being full of dramatic emotional elements
- 8:06Speaker 4: and also I guess somewhat theatrical moments within the album,
- 8:13Speaker 4: And yeah, melodrama sort of as an all encompassing title
- 8:17Speaker 4: sort of just made a lot of sense.
- 8:19Speaker 2: I think that that title actually kind of was decided upon,
- 8:24Speaker 2: almost more organically than any other title, because initially, I
- 8:28Speaker 2: don't think we actually discussed that that would be the
- 8:31Speaker 2: name we like, I don't know High Mind collectively actively
- 8:36Speaker 2: decided between ourselves, just kind of working on the assumption
- 8:39Speaker 2: that that was the name individually and then we're like, yeah,
- 8:42Speaker 2: we're calling it. It's like, are we calling it Melodramaone's
- 8:46Speaker 2: like that's what weird?
- 8:48Speaker 1: It was.
- 8:49Speaker 3: The idea was thrown out very early on, and I
- 8:52Speaker 3: think it just made sense. I think the whole way through,
- 8:56Speaker 3: like nothing else felt like it fit any better.
- 9:01Speaker 4: I think the only title of anything we've ever released
- 9:04Speaker 4: that didn't have to go through like a few different
- 9:08Speaker 4: versions and a few discussions.
- 9:10Speaker 1: How are you guys maturing?
- 9:13Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 9:18Speaker 5: I was speaking of maturing the release of the first
- 9:20Speaker 5: single off the album Bury Me saw the debut of
- 9:23Speaker 5: yourself there noam, So how have you settled in?
- 9:27Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, great, so.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Obviously like this one't.
- 9:31Speaker 2: I know each other from a long, long time ago
- 9:35Speaker 2: where I played in a different band and we kind
- 9:38Speaker 2: of played on shared bills, so that's how we kind
- 9:41Speaker 2: of first met. But yeah, ever since, I guess touching
- 9:46Speaker 2: beats a bit more closely before joining officially as a
- 9:51Speaker 2: part of to Octavia and I jelled perfectly. It's what
- 9:57Speaker 2: how I would explain. It felt very much at home
- 10:00Speaker 2: just in conversation. So yeah, it wasn't a hard decision
- 10:05Speaker 2: for me. I'd like to think it wasn't a hard
- 10:07Speaker 2: decision for anyone else.
- 10:08Speaker 1: I'm going to say, that's what you think. Let's see
- 10:10Speaker 1: what the other boys.
- 10:12Speaker 2: So hopefully, but who knows.
- 10:15Speaker 4: He was our last choice. Actually everyone else said no.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Wanted by default.
- 10:22Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I'm kidding. I'm kidding. He was literally our
- 10:24Speaker 4: first choice. That's who wanted, and we're lucky to have him.
- 10:29Speaker 5: I'm imagining with the album coming out, you guys have
- 10:31Speaker 5: planned some shows to launch it somewhere.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Yes, for sure, we will be.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Are they not announced?
- 10:41Speaker 4: We can't tell anyone about them just yet, but yeah,
- 10:44Speaker 4: more news will be coming. Just focus on the release
- 10:48Speaker 4: day at the moment we can.
- 10:49Speaker 1: People keep an eye out to see what he's coming up.
- 10:54Speaker 4: All the usual places Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, all of that
- 11:01Speaker 4: Zuckerberg nonsense. You can get on there and look us up, Chassy.
- 11:06Speaker 5: Before I let you go, guys, I've got a new
- 11:07Speaker 5: segment I've started called photo Bomb. So basically, I've trod
- 11:11Speaker 5: through your social media before you got a chat, I
- 11:13Speaker 5: found a couple of photos I want to know some
- 11:16Speaker 5: more about.
- 11:17Speaker 1: So this is one of them, right, I'm.
- 11:19Speaker 5: Not sure if this is a home brand Christmas you
- 11:20Speaker 5: got it that's the story there.
- 11:25Speaker 1: That is I'll help you go.
- 11:28Speaker 3: No, yeah, justin our guitarist that was where did you
- 11:35Speaker 3: find that?
- 11:37Speaker 1: It was like.
- 11:40Speaker 4: We were at my place, I don't know, like twenty twenty,
- 11:43Speaker 4: just before like the whole COVID thing happened, I think,
- 11:47Speaker 4: And yeah, there was like a fluffel food truck like
- 11:51Speaker 4: down the street from mine, and you know, we're all
- 11:54Speaker 4: sort of half cooked and went out for a little
- 11:57Speaker 4: wonder to get a get a kebab or something, and
- 12:00Speaker 4: this genius thought it was a good idea to grab
- 12:03Speaker 4: one of these orange cones that he found off the
- 12:06Speaker 4: off the side of the road and bring it back,
- 12:08Speaker 4: put it on his head and started playing guitar. I
- 12:11Speaker 4: don't know, And we obviously took a photo of him
- 12:13Speaker 4: because it's great. I don't even know why we posted that.
- 12:20Speaker 3: I remember we found a was it a red back?
- 12:24Speaker 3: There was a spider in there of some sort.
- 12:26Speaker 4: Oh yeah, in the thing there was like an actual
- 12:30Speaker 4: venomous spider in the top of it that he was
- 12:33Speaker 4: wearing on his head. The whole.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Head you found it.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Yeah, it was probably the a lot time. Maybe it
- 12:41Speaker 3: crawled out of his hair into the cone.
- 12:44Speaker 4: Yeah, true, true, yeah, yeah, I.
- 12:47Speaker 5: Found one more and there's a couple of photos. This
- 12:50Speaker 5: a little bit disturbing guys, like why are your eyes
- 12:53Speaker 5: scratched out?
- 12:57Speaker 4: Yeah? Whose idea was that?
- 13:00Speaker 3: No, that was a bit of a creative thing that
- 13:03Speaker 3: we wanted to try. We kind of liked the idea
- 13:06Speaker 3: of just try. Yeah, I guess trying to put that
- 13:11Speaker 3: out there a little bit with some of our pictures,
- 13:14Speaker 3: and yeah, we gave it to try. Love the pictures.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Those were taken by Andrew Vaughan and he did a
- 13:23Speaker 3: great job without adding all the effects on there.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Two year old childed Di scribbling out because I think
- 13:34Speaker 1: it is a.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Little bit into like album concept and even the album artwork.
- 13:41Speaker 2: I think we wanted to approach the concept of identity
- 13:45Speaker 2: a little bit and that kind of leans into it,
- 13:48Speaker 2: and I think in a similar passion to the album artwork.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Just with that kind of that mixed media approach and
- 13:57Speaker 2: no defined facial features, I get very nice.
- 14:02Speaker 1: All right, boys, That's all I've got for you.
- 14:04Speaker 5: The album Melodrama comes out this Friday, October thirty first,
- 14:08Speaker 5: just in time for Halloween. The boys are going out
- 14:10Speaker 5: on the road, but they're not allowed to tell us
- 14:12Speaker 5: when they keep an eye on their socials and make
- 14:14Speaker 5: sure you get along and check them out when they
- 14:16Speaker 5: come to us.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Out near
