- 0:18Hello, and welcome to Gates Leapers, the pop culture game show that shines
- 0:22a spotlight onto everyone's favorite fandoms. I'm your games master and planet destroying bureaucrat
- 0:28who does a little poetry on the side, Matt Watson. But a games
- 0:32master needs games and games need players. And do we have a great cast
- 0:37or should I say crewe lineup for you today? Please welcome. First,
- 0:41he is a podcaster and voice artist who you can hear on the Supernatural podcast
- 0:46Carrying Wayward. It's Drew Shulman. That's a metro. You shut up for
- 0:53the wrong. This is the Merrio one right, this is I got my
- 0:57suspenders, my my little like my iHeart Chris Pratt. Sorry. And he's
- 1:03a comic book writer and podcaster who you can hear on the Geek Exploration podcast.
- 1:07It's Ben Robinson. Hey, welcome, Hey, Hey, hey,
- 1:11was that like, Nope, I shouldn't make that joke, never mind,
- 1:15I just sorry, I might cut that. It was Yep, that's exactly
- 1:23what it was. I was trying to riff off of Drew doing the Mario
- 1:25thing, and I was gonna be like, oh, that's a different property
- 1:26as well. Never doing a Cosby show episode never Happening. All right,
- 1:34I'll just do a clean one in case I decided to cut all of that.
- 1:37I've had one beer for the first time in a few weeks. Clearly
- 1:40it's affecting you. So welcome Drew, Welcome Ben. How are you both
- 1:46doing good on this side over here? I've also got myself a nice sour
- 1:49beer thematic hor show. Hell, Yes, very good, very good Drew.
- 1:53We'll start with you, see is how you made the first reference?
- 1:56Are you a Hitchhiker's Guide fan? Such a big fan? I I was
- 2:00never a big reader. Like I feel like there's so many, like major
- 2:04nerdy books I've just missed out all and like I know I've said it before
- 2:07and I'll repeat it. I've only read The Hobbit, never The Lord of
- 2:09the Rings. I'm in the middle of doing the first book now. So
- 2:13nice for me to find a book that has drawn me in so much that
- 2:16I've read it through multiple times, including the entire series and his other works.
- 2:22Really says like this book connected with me, and this series has always
- 2:23been like my favorite. Like I quote him often, I quote the series
- 2:29too frequently. Yeah, it's so quotable. Good stuff, good stuff And
- 2:34to your teammate, Ben, are you a big hitchhike his Guide fan?
- 2:37I consider myself a bit of a hoopy frud Okay, okay, deep come,
- 2:43but yeah, yeah, yeah, I've been Uh. I've discovered this
- 2:46book when I was probably in late elementary school, junior high maybe somewhere around
- 2:53in there. I instantly fell in love with it, and I've read it
- 2:55through many times. I think I've purchased that combined hardcover volume with little things
- 3:00in it like three or four times, and then like lent it out to
- 3:02people be like you need to read this, and never got it back.
- 3:07I currently don't even own one, but I've bought many. That's a that's
- 3:10a good sign that people like the recommendation and the Hitchhiker's Guide. Love was
- 3:15spread throughout this small planet. I was gonna say, the universe. I
- 3:19don't think you sent it off this planet. I'm gonna I feel safe making
- 3:22that bad. I mean, you never know where where it ended up.
- 3:24True, that's true, that's true. Not impossible, just highly improbable.
- 3:29This is when, like the Simpson's Little montage shows the book making it all
- 3:31the way to like the furthest reach of the galaxy, but then eventually back
- 3:35to a dump on Earth. Yes, it's gonna start an intergalactic war.
- 3:42Oh fantastic. Okay, Well, as a team, you'll need some opponents,
- 3:46and it says here this is the part where I introduce them. So
- 3:49leap frogs please welcome. He is a podcaster and comic book artist. Head
- 3:53on over to Space oddityscomic dot com to find out more. It's John Williams.
- 3:58Oh hi, and she's a podcast and the Depressed Marvin to my anxious
- 4:01Arthur, It's Audra Stevenson. Hello. Hello. I thought about saying hello
- 4:06in my best Zoey Deschanel impression, but then it wasn't good, and so
- 4:12I was like, this is bad in a way that's not funny. I
- 4:15think I think even Zoey Deschanelle was doing a bad zoe Deschanell impression in that
- 4:18movie. Yeah, just just say after hello, I'm a singer, and
- 4:23then you're you're doing You're doing her job for well, she wants you to
- 4:27know that she makes music. Just just a random shot of someone coming to
- 4:30talk to me while I'm in the shower for no reason. That happens in
- 4:33so many of her movies. Yeah, and a new girl in every other
- 4:38episode. That's yeah, that's something for Hollywood to figure out. That's not
- 4:42what we're here for. We are. He had to play a game about
- 4:46Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and John, let's start with you. Have you
- 4:49always been a fan of Hitchhiker's Guide. I can't say always, you know,
- 4:53and I heard about it when we were kids from Ben, And like
- 4:57I've known the name Zaffot or Zephot. I don't know if if there's a
- 5:00standard way to say it, you know, a different different versions say ze
- 5:04fold. But that's all I said in like the BBC radio plays, Oh
- 5:10do that? When I was a kid, I always thought, for some
- 5:12reason, I read the entire book series as zafoid. Yeah at all.
- 5:16No, but that does happen with characters sometimes, especially he's got some wacky
- 5:20ass characters. Oh yeah, oh yeah fold And it's pronounced like that people
- 5:27books for example. But no, I I came to it in my twenties.
- 5:32I was, I was in college and I bought that that big volume,
- 5:36that combined volume and started reading it and devoured it and loved it.
- 5:41Similar to Ben, I've had multiple copies that I've lent out and uh and
- 5:45they disappear. I do currently have one that that I need to read.
- 5:48Hey, what was that? That's probably fine? Oh you know one of
- 5:55the people Ben's name in big letters and the cover just crossed out. No,
- 6:00but yeah, and similar to Drew too, you know, I just
- 6:03I fell in love with that. I've read the first one several times.
- 6:08I've only consumed the whole series once, but I've read the first two books
- 6:13many times. Getting up there and having a family and stuff, you just
- 6:15don't have time to read books the same way animal slow reader, So even
- 6:19though they're not big books, it still takes me a while. Oh,
- 6:23we're building up a good, good cast of fans, Hea Ordrick, can
- 6:26you complete the set? Are you a fan of Hitchhiker's Guide? I am.
- 6:29I haven't reread it recently, but I did read all of them also
- 6:32in college, just going through and being like, have you how did everybody
- 6:38else know about this, my quirky ass? And no one fucking told me?
- 6:44And your parents probably would have let you read it too, Yeah,
- 6:47they genuinely would have. We probably have me. Well, I don't know
- 6:51if they read the first couple of pages and they're talking about that dude and
- 6:56his books against God. I don't know who is this god guy? Any
- 6:59Yeah, what is the whole thing about? Like, uh, God created
- 7:02the universe? Most people agree it was a pretty bad idea. Yeah,
- 7:06yeah, that's part. You might have had to have kept secret. No
- 7:10weird thing. My dad probably would have loved it, the weirdest dichotomy.
- 7:15But we probably even owned it. But it just took me a while to
- 7:17get there. I have not reread it since. So we'll see what stored.
- 7:25We'll see, I'll see, we'll see what's stored. No, I'm
- 7:28just I'm just glad that we got full fans here of a thing. It's
- 7:30kind of a gate leapers Riorty. I think I think we normally. Yeah,
- 7:33there's there's no uh, there's no. Every person dumb. I was
- 7:39about to say, there's no. Jason, just say much. Jason's sitting
- 7:45down to listen to today this stop of his book. Like three seconds ago,
- 7:48just said, Discord, I'm going to go record. I can't wait
- 7:50you to listen to it. The most horrible trailer ever committed to him and
- 7:57I love him. Eight minutes in come on now. I was hoping to
- 8:01pay tribute to Jason for by dressing up that was I was massively appreciate that
- 8:07John, and I know Jason will as well the effort of Yeah for our
- 8:11audio listeners. John is wearing the full I'll call it the classic Arthur or
- 8:16the classic Dent with the robe and the towel combination, perfect for hitchhiking across
- 8:22the galaxy. I will say I am not wearing it today, but the
- 8:24last time I did wear it was in public and I met Adam West wearing
- 8:28it. Well, there you go. So John, just take a step
- 8:33out onto the streets and you'll meet a batman. That's how it works.
- 8:37I would love to probably gonna be George Clooney, though. Now my sister
- 8:43has met two batman's. I need to know which too, Ye, Val
- 8:48Kilmer and Michael Keaton. Oh god, damn those are good. Yeah.
- 8:50She met Michael Keaton and when he when he introduced himself, put his hand
- 8:54out, she said, and you are on that chick. Wow? Yeah
- 9:03he apparently so. I mean, I mean, if you're that famous,
- 9:07it's probably refreshingly that he doesn't. Yeah, you probably get she was just
- 9:13being a ship. Wow, maybe we'll get your sister on this podcast,
- 9:20I'll he up the competition. Okay, teams, don't panic. You've just
- 9:24been informed that Earth has twelve minutes left before it's destroyed, so let's use
- 9:28that time wisely. I'd like each the pet to come up with a Hitchhiker's
- 9:31theme team name. Please, that's wise, time well spent. Let's start
- 9:35with Drew and Ben. What have you got? Let's see. I don't
- 9:39know if I want to whittle this list down, I'll just blast for them
- 9:41and you can shoot down any ones you don't want. So the first one
- 9:45I had was the deep Thoughts, as in T O th h O T
- 9:50S. Okay, yeah, I like that, and that feels a team
- 9:56name, I'll be honest. It was Andre. That was definitely. If
- 10:01I was still on Twitter, my new name would be deep Thought currently thought
- 10:09topic but thought related. Yeah. Then I had the pan geeklactic gargle blasters
- 10:16if it was going to be John and I. That's good, it's very
- 10:20good. I like that one. Then I've got Agrijag's luck. Oh that's
- 10:24why, don't I don't think I know that reference. Agrijag is the entity
- 10:26that Arthur Dent kills over and over and over on accident. I remember his
- 10:31name. I'll be honest, I didn't know the name, and you said
- 10:35it clicked. I was like, oh wait, it has a name,
- 10:37that thing. Yeah. And then for the for the potty humor, because
- 10:41you got to have that, I got the part of gold, of course.
- 10:46And then just finally and simply mostly harmless, classic classic. I only
- 10:52got three floating around, but the vogue on poets m H and classy.
- 10:58One of my weirdly favorite reference is what he's on that. I think it's
- 11:01in the fourth book, where he's living on a weird planet making sandwiches,
- 11:05hunting the perfectly normal beasts. I think we should be the perfectly normal team.
- 11:09Okay, yeah, and then I'm actually blaming. I had another pangalactic
- 11:13one, but it wasn't as good as yours. I can't what it was
- 11:15now though, probably probably going down the pot Huma route and saying pangalactic ass
- 11:20blaster or something with something like that. Yeah, it's not a bad choice.
- 11:26What do you think we're going with here? There's a lot of good
- 11:28choices there. I think whichever one takes the longest to say and can't be
- 11:33shortened easily trying to think of something with slarty bart fast in Itlight ground was
- 11:41a really rough one, slotty butt fast, slutty butt fest, but I
- 11:52do have slurty bart slow, so good I was. I also really want
- 12:03to hear you try and shout that during the lightning. It's going to be
- 12:07just as difficult as anything else. That's all your secret. It doesn't matter
- 12:11how easy your heart it is. It's hard. Yeah, suddenly, suddenly
- 12:16I buzz in no problems. That's the use every route perfectly enunciated. We're
- 12:22all just amazing. I just needed a challenge. So what do we think?
- 12:28I kind of want to go with deep thoughts If you're cool that one,
- 12:33I like, hell, yes, twenty twenty four men can be thoughts
- 12:39to exactly break those gender stereotypes. Yeah, deep thoughts, I love it
- 12:43so much. Okay, and let's find out who they're going to be facing
- 12:48Auldra John I had like my standard one in deep thoughts, but like normal
- 12:54uh, I also had had deep thought or thinkers. Yeah, like Magrathion's
- 13:01normal pangalactic gargle blasters. I also looked up the name of the mice mm
- 13:09hmm lunk Will and fuk are very funny. They did have different names.
- 13:18Trillion called them Frankie and Benjie, but lunk Will and fuk Is that's a
- 13:26much better name, very much better names for mice my opinion. All Right,
- 13:33some good choices that John, What what have you got? Well,
- 13:35Like I said, I had deep thoughts, I also had mostly harmless on
- 13:39there, but I have some smother standards like paranoid androids that also scratch scratched
- 13:45my my radio head itch Hearts of Gold. But but the my favorite on
- 13:52here maybe is the petunias. Nice. That is good, but I also
- 14:00like food. Yes, I honestly I do like the petunias. It's a
- 14:05good reference and it's nice to have a clean reference. Yeah, its exactly,
- 14:15and I feel like it's enough of a tongue twistles will be fun for
- 14:18uh for Adro in the speed round, just straight up the petunias. The
- 14:22petunias. Yeah, you have to say it like that though petunias. Okay,
- 14:26I can do that. It's it's thematic to do my BBC radio voice
- 14:31throughout this episode. So yeah, we'll see how it goes, all right,
- 14:33So we have deep thoughts versus the petunias. I love it, I
- 14:39forget I'd also consider doing the doing the the ravenous bug bladder beasts of troll
- 14:43just to make Matt say it over yeah, and you know immediately I'd write
- 14:46it down wrong and then not be able to say it properly. Was it
- 14:52too late to pick the deeper thoughts? You know what? We like the
- 14:58for names so that it doesn't get too confusing for me. But that is
- 15:01very cool. We would just become the deepest thoughts at that point, can
- 15:05we actually change our the most deepest, the most the most deepest thoughts deeper
- 15:11deep, the deeper than the other team plus one thoughts deepest, the deepest
- 15:18thoughters. And none of these are going to be used, all right?
- 15:24And if you're listening to this and thinking, well, you'll seem lovely.
- 15:28But I don't know anything about hitch hiking two left thumbs, don't worry his
- 15:33order with a little segment we like to call passing knowledge. The Hitchhiker's Guide
- 15:41to the Galaxy is a comedy science fiction franchise created by the writer Douglas Adams.
- 15:46Originally broadcast as a radio comedy on the BBC from nineteen seventy nine,
- 15:52onwards. If you don't know what radio is, it was just podcasting,
- 15:56but with more sound effects. Over the decades, it has been adapted into
- 16:03other formats as well, including novels, stage shows, comic books, a
- 16:07TV series, a text adventure game, and a two thousand and five feature
- 16:11film, which stars Martin Freeman playing Tim from the office, but in a
- 16:17dressing gown this time. I don't know what happy ending is. Life isn't
- 16:19about endings is. It's a series of moments. The franchise centers on Arthur
- 16:23Dent, a surviving Earthling, as he hitchhikes around the galaxy with his best
- 16:29friend and alien Ford Prefect, his crush Trillion, his president Zeyfod Beebelbrox,
- 16:37and his paranoid android Marvin. The paranoid android Life start to talk to me
- 16:44about life. Together. They have pulp style sci fi misadventures, but along
- 16:48the way search for deep philosophical answers to many of the musings of existence.
- 16:53It's like if Star Wars was written by Jean Paul Sartre. What how can
- 16:57you do this? This is outrageous, It's unfair. Hitchhiker's legacy is perhaps
- 17:04the number of memes it managed to produce in a pre mass meme culture.
- 17:10That's a real phrase. There's don't panic. Forty two cowls, mostly harmless
- 17:18and so long and thanks for all the fish. And with that, I
- 17:22say, so long and thanks for listening to this. Let's play gayly?
- 17:26Yes, thank you, Adre. That was brilliant, Thank you. Okay,
- 17:37just before we get to today's games, I've asked each player to bring
- 17:41in a muse, something that inspires them or something they love from this particular
- 17:45fandom. Hitchhikers is inspiring to me because it essentially predicted Wikipedia, and without
- 17:52Wikipedia research, this podcast would be nothing. So Drew, we'll start with
- 17:59you. What's inspired you from the world of HG TTG. It would actually
- 18:03have to be just how bizarre the life of the author, Douglas Adams truly
- 18:10was, and the weird shit that happened to him that like basically could have
- 18:15been in the book. In fact, there are things that happen in the
- 18:18book that are based off true events, and some that have then been written
- 18:22to other books. What there is, in fact an entire book out called
- 18:25The Salmon of Doubt, my favorite piece of his literature, that was found
- 18:29on a discarded hard drive bought at a state sale that some fan happened to
- 18:33stumble across and like reached out to his like estates to get it like reinstated
- 18:38and brought back to him and then eventually published. Wow. I did not
- 18:42know that that was the I'm rereading that right now. Yeah. It is
- 18:45one of the like weird and then that is full of like his personal essays,
- 18:48bits of things that were made. It's the book and just like you
- 18:52start to sort of see like this man was Arthur dead. He was the
- 18:55everyday boring man who just had the miraculous happen around and just lived to accept
- 19:00it. So this is happening him and that book are very much my inspiration
- 19:06and I just absolute muse. Yeah, that's that's incredible. I didn't know
- 19:12that as the origin story for the for the Salmon of Doubt being published.
- 19:15That's great. What What are some of the things that happened to him in
- 19:18real life that happened to him within Hitchhikers Guide? Sorry to put you on
- 19:22the smoke. I can remember the exact ones, but I know there's at
- 19:26least one or two like weird interactions that Arthur has, like usually things that
- 19:29are like a little more mundane. Like there's something that happens to him in
- 19:32a weird coffee shop with like another customer, and like it's this like really
- 19:36weird scene in like one of the later books, and it like turns out
- 19:37it actually happened to him in real life Arthur Dent nice as as if he
- 19:42were Arthur Dent. Yes, yeah, yeah, there's the Yeah, I
- 19:45think that's somebody to do with. Like cookies in a train station is another
- 19:47one. That's another part. Like he tells the full version in the Salmon
- 19:49of Doubt where he like sat down to the train station with a complete stranger
- 19:53and the stranger starts like stealing his biscuits, and like he does know how
- 19:57to approach it, and then find the guy leaves, and then he gets
- 20:00up and finds under his bag his package of business. He'd been feeling the
- 20:07other guy's biscuits actually, And just like that is that doesn't happen to normal
- 20:12people. Yeah, yeah, that's that's fantastic, definite, definitely a man
- 20:18worth being inspired by. And yeah, what a what a wild life?
- 20:22Okay, Ben, let's let's move on on to you the other half of
- 20:25deep Thoughts, Uh, what is inspiring you from Hitchings Guide. Interestingly enough,
- 20:32it is Deep Thought, uh, not one from the book. When
- 20:37I was a youth back in you know, nineteen digity two or whenever it
- 20:42was, we had, we had the good old dial up internet in the
- 20:47pre or in the pre real Internet era, and I used to go all
- 20:52the time and I'd get this thing called California Computer News and it would just
- 20:56have like nerd shit in it and in the back and had a listing of
- 21:00like local BBS's, which for all the children out there were bulletin board systems
- 21:07where you would dial up with your modem and connect directly to them, and
- 21:10it was all text based stuff and you could tell okay images and there was
- 21:14games and kind of like forums and stuff specific to like someone had set it
- 21:19up. It'd be in their garage and you'd call their phone number and connect
- 21:22to it. Yeah. Yeah, And one of them was one called Deep
- 21:26Thought, and it was like a Hitchhiker's Guide themed fandom bb bbs in the
- 21:33Sacramento area because everything was low I mean, I call it from New York
- 21:36if you wanted, but you'd be charged long distance fees, yes, And
- 21:42it was probably like the first online fandom community I was ever really involved in,
- 21:48and it wasn't all Hitchhiker's Guide stuff, like they had some other stuff
- 21:52on there, Like I remember playing this game called the Legend of the Red
- 21:55Dragon on there. It was like a pseudo m m O RPG for to
- 22:00all tech space for that time. Very tongue in cheek, fit the tone
- 22:03very well, and I whittled away many hours of my uh my young life
- 22:07on on that BBS, just dialing up that Sacramento number, hearing the modems
- 22:14scream at you, and then it pop up and there's like a like an
- 22:18asch graphic of deep thought and then like you type in where you wanted to
- 22:22go. Yeah, very primitive. Look, very very primitive, but also
- 22:26a great great to hear an example of like early internet fandom. I love
- 22:30these stories so much. Yeah, that's that's I can see why that's inspiring.
- 22:34Yeah, it was nearly as impressive as my digital watch at the time.
- 22:41Oh, you've just you've just helped us figure out what the dignity was
- 22:44then copy copy too early, copy too early, decoding the diggity. Yeah,
- 22:52also a calculator, good question. Who, well, I wasn't I
- 22:56wasn't loaded. We're a family of bigger means. Okay, let's move on
- 23:03over to the patunas and find the petunias and find out what's inspiring them.
- 23:07John will start with you. What's inspiring you from the Hitchhiker's Guide. I'm
- 23:12going to go with a bit more broad with this. The concept of the
- 23:18absurd and its acceptability in creation. I love it. That's the essay title.
- 23:22You've got five minutes to read words. I just love Douglas Adams's ability
- 23:30to spin a yarn that tells a story but also tells you everything else that
- 23:36you don't even need to know, and in joke form, like he'll he'll
- 23:38just have these sentences that get to a point in such a roundabout way and
- 23:44always make me laugh. And it's it's damn near every paragraph, you know.
- 23:48So it like that. That's what caught me when I started reading this.
- 23:51I wasn't a big reader back then, you know, Like I think
- 23:55I had only read like murder Mysteries. I didn't read books in school.
- 23:57I just I just bullshat my way through it. But Hitchhiker's Guy just really
- 24:03really grabbed me, and uh and I fell in love with it, and
- 24:07it's it worked its way into my life also, and I think I think
- 24:12I can speak for Ben too that that, you know, like our sense
- 24:15of humor a lot comes from that. And like, you know, this
- 24:18isn't a plug, but like the comic book that we work on wouldn't exist
- 24:22without Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Like it's it's oh, it can be
- 24:26a want to do, it can be a bad We get enough plugs on
- 24:30this show. But but yeah, I mean we always say that it's a
- 24:33that it's the love child of hit of a Hitchhiker's Guide in Indiana Jones.
- 24:37You know, it's an adventurous space comedy and and like you know, just
- 24:41science fiction comedy just really hits a certain spot for me, whether it's this
- 24:47or Futurama, you know, just like the the space funny absurd, you
- 24:52know, and absurd for absurd steak or absurd for absurd's sake. I didn't
- 24:59even drink any stunch. You're naturally drug inside. I'm on water. A
- 25:07plus on that essay, though, that was a very good case made for
- 25:11the absurd and the acceptability of the absurd. And yeah, sci fi comedy
- 25:15the origins of right here with the Hitchhiker's Guide, So yeah, good stuff.
- 25:19I still remember the line that hooked me early on. I think it's
- 25:22it's in the first chapter on in Hitchhiker's Guide, was that the Vogon ship
- 25:26hung in the sky exactly the way a brick doesn't. And I was like,
- 25:30yes, right here. I have a very bad habit of like coming
- 25:33up with really punny names for my magic the gathering decks, and I have
- 25:37a deck that has all walls that attack and it is called exactly the way
- 25:41bricks don't. And Odra the other half of the petunias. Yes, what's
- 25:48inspiring you from Hitchhikers? My muse is trillion. I found Hitchhiker's Guide to
- 25:55the Galaxy while I was at university, so me reading the book with a
- 26:00female astrophysicist me there like taking breaks between like CALC three and diffy Q,
- 26:06and I'm like, I'm going to take a break out. I'm going to
- 26:08read a chapter and it's gonna be fine. SHELI is going to be in
- 26:14the stars, and then I'm going to find out how to program my graphic
- 26:17calculator on your digital watch on my digital watch, but just it's the type
- 26:25of thing of like representation being important in the sense of I was studying all
- 26:30kinds of math and seeing a character, even in an absurd story, as
- 26:36like, no, no, she's the reasonable one here being it was just
- 26:41great for me when times were tough. Nicely the smartest person on the crew.
- 26:49Oh yeah, a long she would be fucked without her, and so
- 26:57it was just like, no, if she can do it in the face
- 27:00of all of this insanity, I could probably figure this out. Yeah,
- 27:06I imagine you've had some bosses reminiscent of beeble Brox. Yeah, two heads,
- 27:14two heads, Yeah, both equally up the ass between them. No,
- 27:21we love our women in stem and our women in space. We do,
- 27:23Yes, we absolutely in Stemino women in space. That's a it's a
- 27:29great inspiration. God, no one packed her one hundred tampons for a week
- 27:33and ask a thousand enough. No one did that, and honestly that was
- 27:37an inspiration as well. Honestly that makes a fod bieble Brocks actually a hero.
- 27:42He's a feminist icon. He didn't pack trillion a thousand tampas right,
- 27:52seems with that with a thousand tampons are very out of context. Douglas Adams
- 27:56thing. I think it's real. That's a real Sorry, they sent a
- 28:00woman to a space for a week, and they yeah, either one hundred
- 28:04or a thousand. I can't, I don't. I don't think they didn't
- 28:10actually send it. They asked her, is one hundred enough for a week
- 28:12in space? Yeah? Well, this is what happens when you spend your
- 28:15time designing rockets instead of talking to women. Yeah, more chat than NESSA
- 28:21that's what we're learning. Enough, all right, I'm still gonna say with
- 28:29that. With that, let's stick out our thumbs and hope we're beamed up
- 28:33into the Vogun constructor fleet. That is Round one. Round one is called
- 28:42Stowaways Manual to the Universe. Perhaps the most iconic aspect of Hitchhikers is Douglas
- 28:48adams wonderful way of writing encyclopedia style entries on various things within the universe.
- 28:56But when presented with an entry extract, will our teams be able to identif
- 29:00by it as a genuine Adams or if I had a I write it for
- 29:03the Stowaways Manual to the Universe. And before you get too excited by a
- 29:10I, I mean AI as in an individual, and that individual was made
- 29:17so it was going to the first ethical use of a I've ever heard of.
- 29:22That's the season five thing. We'll stop playing with it. Then the
- 29:26entries. Are they written by Adams or are they official from official books?
- 29:32They are official from official books, so I guess I've probably a couple a
- 29:37couple of them might but their official Hitchhiker's Guide cannon yeah, by the other
- 29:45guy. Yes, And technically some of the radio plays were actually written by
- 29:49Pratchett. Yes, yeah, the later ones. Yeah, but yeah,
- 29:55you guys know a lot about I just want to make sure because like,
- 30:00is this atoms or not? Or is this that's true? I believe they're
- 30:03from the trilogy of five. I believe, Okay, but we'll find out
- 30:08as we go. I think you guys will know enough. I don't think
- 30:11I'll trick any of you here. I'll say that up top. Challenge accepted,
- 30:15So we will begin with deep thoughts. Here is your first Hitchhiker's entry.
- 30:22Space is big, really big. You just won't believe how vastly,
- 30:26hugely, mind bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's
- 30:30a long way down the road to the Chemist. But that's just peanuts to
- 30:33space. Ben. Do you remember this one? Yeah, no, this
- 30:36is one hundred percent. I mean it's it's it's yeah, it's from the
- 30:38first book. Like I still quote the space is big a lot. Actually,
- 30:44we spoofed it in the first issue of Space Oddities. I have to
- 30:48read it. I'm so bad. I don't order for you guys in the
- 30:51little blurb we had in there, unless Matt's changed one word just to fuck
- 30:56with us. Look it is, it is like me, but question one,
- 31:00come on, guys, question one later. The tricks come later.
- 31:04Exactly. That is a point to deep thoughts. Very good. That is
- 31:07that is genuine Hitchhiker's guide. Okay, now moving on over to the petunias.
- 31:12Here is your extract, and I should say, actually, what these
- 31:17extracts are on That was the part that I was going to say to help
- 31:19potentially try and throw you off with these. So now let me just double
- 31:22bluff this by saying I could have remembered this for for the previous one for
- 31:26a different reason. So their entry was on space. Your entry is on
- 31:30time. Here is your entry on time. Time is a universal concept observed
- 31:37by most of the galaxy in a linear way. It's recommended that you try
- 31:41not to think about time too much, as it can lead to migrains and
- 31:45death. Ooh, I don't necessarily remember this one. I think it goes
- 31:52without saying that it fits the right energy. But that's the game. Yeah,
- 31:59and it almost seems like it's too short for such a large concept concept
- 32:05as time. I will say each extract is around about the same number of
- 32:10words I've I've shortened the extracts in places that just an extract of the extract
- 32:17shit you have you chopped him up, or that you've just ended it at
- 32:22the end of a sentence, ended it at the end of a sentence.
- 32:23I don't believe I've broken up any sentences in any of these. I'm gonna
- 32:28go wild. Maybe this is game. In the game, theirs was real.
- 32:31I think ours is fake. Okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna go with
- 32:35you with that. You're saying fake fake, it is fake. There was
- 32:39no entry on time in The Hitchhiker's Guy. The ending on death was very
- 32:44good that it was very Douglas Adams of like the Something Innocuous and Death.
- 32:47Yeah, Migrain's and Death. There you go yeah, throw two things together.
- 32:52Mm hmm. Okay, well, thank you for the compliments. I
- 32:54again, I don't think I'm gonna trick you with any of these, but
- 32:57let's see how things go with deep thoughts. Here is your next one,
- 33:02and your entry is on toast. Toast is bread that has been browned by
- 33:07short term exposure to radiant heat. It's thought that the perfect slice of toast
- 33:13has been produced only once, in nineteen sixty seven by Timothy Dillinger of Saint
- 33:17Louis, Missouri. And for what it's worth, he chose marmalade. It
- 33:22sounds very familiar, Yeah, it does, and it sounds very appropriate.
- 33:28It's something about that like it happened one time at a very niche specific moment
- 33:32that is like very Douglas Adams. So I can tell of vis is again
- 33:37Matt being really good at knowing this game, or if it is actually one,
- 33:42and I'd say, like you know, I'd lean towards it, because
- 33:45no American would choose marmalade. But Matt's is the weird thing. Yes,
- 33:52of course, a Lord and savior, I'd follow him. My gut says
- 34:00real. Yeah, Sam, I'm gonna go with real with you on this
- 34:01one. You're going with real, This one's fake, This one I made
- 34:06up on. Well done? Yeah good. My brain was a little suspicious
- 34:13about Saint Louis. Hmm, it should have been was the one that stuck
- 34:16out to me a little bit. It felt like that was like it sounded
- 34:19like a city I've heard in the book. I should be like upped in
- 34:22on time or some stupid I thought about that so much, and then I
- 34:25was like, then would there be I I don't want to Actually, I
- 34:28don't admit how long I spent thinking about what town in this question. It
- 34:32was longer than anyone should spend on it. I'm picturing now the map of
- 34:36the entirety of the world in your office, with like little note in every
- 34:38city and country, like you have red lines trying to like triangulate. Yeah,
- 34:44you can't see what's on the other side of the camera. Hebe Sylvia.
- 34:46Okay, we will move back on over to the petunias, and here
- 34:51is your extract, and it is about alcohol. The best drink in existence
- 34:54is the pangalactic goggle blaster. It says that the effect of a pangalactic gargle
- 35:00blaster is like having your brain smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped around
- 35:04a large gold brick. Yeah that's real. Yeah, even finishing the line.
- 35:12There no no debate over this one, just simple as we don't change,
- 35:20I say, don't complicate a perfect cocktail. No chance I've just changed
- 35:24some changed some words there or anything, just a I. If you did,
- 35:30I'm not going to know. You've got it. It's it's correct that
- 35:36that one is real. That one absolutely is real. There's a petunias there,
- 35:39and that's fair. We got the space one. Yeah, there you
- 35:43go. That was our gimme. Yeah. Yeah, let's let's get a
- 35:46little bit, a little bit tougher now we lost the last one. I
- 35:52love the toughness. Deep thoughts. There is your next extract. We're getting
- 35:57a bit more universe specific now. Your extract is on the planet of Vogsphea,
- 36:01considered to be the second worst holiday destination in the universe. Volkspia is
- 36:07also home to the deliciously scintillating jeweled scuttling crabs. The worst holiday destination is
- 36:15Clacton on Sea. I mean, I do I remember something about the Vogons,
- 36:21like being a shitty, poorly evolved species and something about you know,
- 36:24like the rest of the species are really nice. Like there's these really great
- 36:28crabs that they eat, and there's these antelopes that they sit on, but
- 36:30they're too fat to ride. It kills the antelopes. Yeah, like how
- 36:36they're just the fucking worst. And so there are crabs on vog space.
- 36:38See the crabs was the only part throwing me, because everything else has that're
- 36:42familiar with the crabs didn't. Well, there are I can confirm there are
- 36:45crabs on vogsphere. However, Matt might also know that. I mean,
- 36:49everything else works for me, even like the idea. I even remember Claxton
- 36:52Sea being like the worst place and I can't remember why, but it must
- 36:54be this entry. I don't know where Claxton on Sea is, but that
- 36:58sounds super British. So I'm down for real if you are. Yeah,
- 37:02you didn't say Saint Louis. It's not Saint Louis. But it's also not
- 37:07real. Yeah I made this one up. This fake. Wow, I'm
- 37:15wondering if it's just a British and reading these it's like scuing me. Yeah,
- 37:23I just went with a fairly generic and also, for what it's worth,
- 37:27terrible holiday destination in the UK. But the dual scuttling crabs are real.
- 37:34I just like pulled that from not being in a guide thing to make
- 37:37it a guide thing. Damn bit all right, moving back on over to
- 37:45the Betunias. Here is your extract, also on a planet, this time
- 37:50for Magarethea. So successful was this venture that Magarethia itself soon became the richest
- 37:55planet of all time, and the rest of the galaxy was reduced to abject
- 38:00poverty. And so the system broke down and the empire collapsed. Okay,
- 38:06so here's here's my issue. Yes, that seems accurate to the story,
- 38:10but I'm not sure if that is an actual quote or a pull from the
- 38:16book. While it was, Yeah, when they were making planets and stuff,
- 38:22they did become like just turbo rich to the point where they had to
- 38:25like shut down. Yeah, but I don't know if it was the rest
- 38:30of everyone else that had to shut down. Geez, I don't know.
- 38:37I'm really torn on this. Yeah, I'm kind of I'm fifty to fifty.
- 38:43I feel like if it was a actual quote, I would want more
- 38:47of like a I want a little something something punchy at the end, other
- 38:52than an empire collapsing. I guess that was quite punchy for the citizens of
- 38:58that empire. Well, it's it's possible that in the actually, like if
- 39:01this is from the book, that there is something punchy that comes after and
- 39:06Matt just cut it off and if we're if we're trying to game the game,
- 39:09He's also, oh no, let's see how it would just be back
- 39:14and forth at this point. Oh, I don't know, I want to
- 39:16go fake. Let's go fake, all right, fake, Yeah, it's
- 39:22real. Sorry, no point there. Yeah, the trick I was going
- 39:27for there. It was just the least Douglas Adams sounding entry. I thought
- 39:30it was just quite bleak without the humor. Yeah, yep, yeah,
- 39:35and that's what got us. You can't all the time, Yeah, exactly
- 39:40right. Some of it's just going to be he kind of did. I
- 39:45mean, so there's there's gonna be something between, like, you know,
- 39:47someone picked the thing up. Not every sentence can be they walked to this
- 39:53place. Yeah, well you can make that funny sentence funny though, by
- 39:57filling in the blanks of being like the dog picked the poop up unexpected the
- 40:02sun. There is he doing there picking up the dog poop story. I'm
- 40:10so sorry. I'm so sorry. I follow along better Next time, I've
- 40:15got one more extract for each team. We're gonna we're gonna deal with some
- 40:19pretty big concepts to finish off. Back on over to deep thoughts. Your
- 40:22extract is on Infinity, bigger than the biggest thing ever, and then some
- 40:29much bigger than that, in fact, really amazingly immense, a totally stunning
- 40:35size. Wow, that's big time. Infinity is just so big that by
- 40:39comparison, Bigness itself looks really titchy. I mean, combine this with a
- 40:44Space entry we got. I really don't remember this one, do you,
- 40:47Ben? I don't remember it specifically, but it sounds right. But that
- 40:52could just be met being clever. It's like it's both levels of comedy.
- 40:57The idea of repeating the same joke as the Space one is very Douglas Adams.
- 41:01But then it also just feels like the perfect way to like dup us
- 41:05is to do that. I'm trying to think of when it would have had
- 41:08an entry on infinite. I feel like it's the intibility drive, so it
- 41:15could have, oh yeah, had something in there, but there there's already
- 41:20entries on it. Specifically, there's also when he encounters the five dimensional new
- 41:25edition of the Guide. It exists in all of time and space at once.
- 41:30I feel like that one has an interesting content, but that one's like
- 41:31a really like it's really intelligent sounding, so the entries wouldn't be a silly
- 41:36I love making people feel like this. It's my favorite thing in the world.
- 41:39Yeah, success, right, It's the entire reason he does this podcast.
- 41:44It's a very vogue one if you met. Of course, I can't
- 41:52wait for the poetry round. Are you leaning any direction? Drew? There's
- 41:58almost the meta game part of me now where it's like my brain wants to
- 42:00say it's fake, so I have to say it's real. I'm with you
- 42:04on that. Let's go real, real, going with real. That's good
- 42:08meta gaming. It is real. This one is real. I was like
- 42:13so so bad. I was like staring at you. You wouldn't you would
- 42:17look and then you were covering your mouth with your hands. You know that
- 42:21one, John, No, no, no, I was thinking the same
- 42:27thing, but but no, I had's okay. On the last one,
- 42:29I was trying to casually smile to make you think I knew the answer.
- 42:32But I would have each other. I mean, I mean, we're we're
- 42:39all looking at cameras, but but Ben is directly in front of my face.
- 42:43So that's true. I badly want to win, and I'm I I
- 42:47play the game badly because I because you badly want to win. Yeah,
- 42:52okay, final extract for the Petunias, It is about dreams. Your extract
- 42:59is about dream sweet dreams. Very little is known about the complex immensity of
- 43:04our passive subconscious. The wise Hula Vou of Gelstick three once conducted a study
- 43:10into the concept of dreams, and their thesis produced a one word answer to
- 43:15their quandary, don't oh my goodness, if this isn't real, this is
- 43:22the best one yet. I want this to be. Although if it's not
- 43:27real, it means that I can make that right. All the hitchhikers got
- 43:34I want you want to eight? Yeah you do. It's just oh yeah,
- 43:45or we've got it cast us right now. We can have better sound
- 43:49effects than the BBC one too, because it's tough. It's it's very in
- 43:54your fit ears, not your face. It was very nineteen seventy. Yeah,
- 44:01my instinct is that I want this to be. This is very good,
- 44:06and so I'm like, this has gotta be real. This's gotta be
- 44:07real, not a photo confidence for your husband. Like, also, if
- 44:15it's not real, I also win. So yeah, I think it feels
- 44:21so real that I don't actually have any reason beyond like like paranoid thoughts and
- 44:29trying to overthink the game to say it's fake. So I I mean,
- 44:32I I guess I would lean towards real, or I would I wouldn't call
- 44:37anybody absurd for answering real. If it's fake, I'm gonna be so mad.
- 44:42Well, I'll be exactly I'll be exactly pleased. Let's go, you
- 44:52go, you're going with real. Let's do it. A pat on the
- 44:55back for this, right because it's fake. Yeah, that one's not real.
- 45:00Although I will say, who lavou are real? That that is a
- 45:05real race from Hitchhiker's Guide. So I threw some reality in that. I
- 45:10think that might be what I was. I was like, oh, yeah,
- 45:13I know, I know those guys, everyone knows them. Love me
- 45:20a day on gel Nick three gelstick. But that's okay. Dreams don't just
- 45:28sounded so Adams. I mean, Matt, you can reveal obviously you read
- 45:31a bunch of these. There is one that does end with like a one
- 45:35word like, oh for sure. Actually the one it's very similar to the
- 45:40one in the movie that isn't in the the original book or series that's about
- 45:45the concept of falling in love. It's it's advised that you don't love.
- 45:51I knew off of that from the from the movies. I knew there was
- 45:54one of those, like doned Things was one of them. That's why.
- 45:57And he was heavily involved in the movies too, like even it's it's a
- 46:00bit of a departure from the book, so you you can feel his hand.
- 46:04Oh yeah, for sure, for sure. I wish they did my
- 46:07Holy Grail collectible. Is I want the movie prop plushies they use with the
- 46:13yarn. Oh yes, ever find those on sale somewhere like an auction.
- 46:17I will go bankrupt getting those. I was gonna say that this podcast happens
- 46:24to know a craft. The Yper artists in October. I'm just saying that
- 46:36is the end of round one. Let's consult the guide to see what it
- 46:39says about the scores. It says the scores are deep. Thoughts are on
- 46:44two. The petunias are also on two. It's all tied up up.
- 46:47Next is round two after these campaign commercials to re elect presidents zey Ford,
- 46:52Beebel Brocks two heads better than one. See you after this. Round two
- 47:02is a twist on our classic fan fiction improv game flash Fiction, except this
- 47:07time, instead of composing original fan fiction one word at a time about Hitchhiker's
- 47:13characters, our teams will be attempting to create vogue on poetry, one word
- 47:19at a time, back and forth between teammates. And I've got to shout
- 47:22out Ben for coming up with this idea, because this is just a great
- 47:24idea for a game. It's obligatory, it's assumed. Yeah yeah, But
- 47:31what will the subjects of your poems be? Well, we have the dice
- 47:36of destiny to decide that. On each side of the dice is a word.
- 47:40Score maximum points by making your poem about this word. But then you'll
- 47:45also score lots of points for using either made up vogue on words and for
- 47:50following the vogon style, which is generally bad. So the worse this is,
- 47:54the more points you'll get. My time to shine stressed. Honestly,
- 48:04I'm feeling pretty good because i think I've got the losing this record here,
- 48:10I'm I think a lot of people on this this episode are on losing streaks.
- 48:20That's bad luck. Recently. Five of the words on here are very
- 48:22normal, are very like. This is what poems are about. We've got
- 48:27like flowers, we've got love, we've got war, we've got the ocean.
- 48:30But I couldn't think of a sixth, so I just put bees on
- 48:34there. So good luck if you get bees. Yeah, let's I've handed
- 48:37it to Ordro. But let's begin with deep thoughts. We're going to begin
- 48:40with deep thoughts. Order if you would like to roll the dice of destiny,
- 48:44we're supposed to roll that roll on a shitty one. Oh that's loud
- 48:50and heavy, genuine panic in our eyes. You're not supposed to do that,
- 48:57JOm panic. Clouds. Subject is clouds, Okay, So one word
- 49:02at a time. I would like to hear a vogue on poem about clouds,
- 49:07and whoever would like to start, Oh grum pumpless clouds, how they
- 49:17distractedly dangle on our frum bumpless when we flagulate skyword our thrummings, bgun should
- 49:42dick. I'm gonna stop you there, partly because I've run out of words
- 49:46to be able to write here. It was it was realizing you were writing
- 49:52this, and I'm like, oh my god, this is amazing. It's
- 49:54hard to write words never heard before. Let me let me see how any
- 50:00of these words I managed to write down correctly. Here is your vogue on
- 50:02poem Oh grumpumpulus clouds. How does disdanctedly dangle on our frombumpulous when we flagulate
- 50:12skyward our thrummings? But gunchit take that last one was rough. That was
- 50:20fantastic. I feel like you guys, you've had a word that like makes
- 50:23up one of my fake words. It was it was wild so close to
- 50:29one of mine. Do you have fake words? Yeah? I knew I'm
- 50:35close because I did not. It's also just a matter of like knowing when
- 50:38to use a real word or a fake word like you don't want to.
- 50:42It's a really fun balance agact. Yeah, you guys do well with that,
- 50:45as far as I can tell, you did that masterfully. I don't
- 50:49want to sort of like set the bar really high and maybe we'll go above
- 50:52five for the first time in this round ever, but we're going to go
- 50:54five full five points for that because that was fantastic. I wasn't aired before.
- 51:04I mean, yeah, I'll keep my bad case like Grumpus is all
- 51:09right. So we're gonna move on over to the petunias. Old just gonna
- 51:13get a twisted grill spin. Watch out for the drink that's right there.
- 51:16Do you hold onto this for christ I'm becoming my father. Watch out for
- 51:21the drink that's right now. No, you're know you're correct. That means
- 51:24it's correct. Oh it's be I will that sound? Oh it's bees.
- 51:37I do hate bees? You really? I am? Yeah? I actually
- 51:44run when they're around, like right, or walk quickly. I just they
- 51:47love me. I've got honey in my veins, and I guess they go
- 51:52to they go after honey as well. That tricksy, but bears always chase
- 51:55me. Can the idiot? I get it? Okay, Well, we're
- 52:05about to hear a poem, a vogue on poem on bees from the petunias.
- 52:08John, would you like to start this one off? Oh? Yes,
- 52:13I would love to. Oh boy, as the leak lid b postigilated
- 52:23a lungst the duciferous flower thy, I'm just going for it. Yeah th
- 52:37h y okay, flask Antennae twitched amusedly in Harmophonious last word gash turtledom Jesus,
- 52:59I stand buy this, yeah, and so you should. Are you
- 53:02need to compliment A longst my new favorite word. I might start using a
- 53:08lungst good word. Okay, we have your vogue on poem as the leak
- 53:15lid b prestigated alongst the deciferous flower. Thy Phlasic Antennae twitched a music in
- 53:29harmphonious gaster Do you look, gum. It's really hard to write these down
- 53:35as you're saying them for the first time ever. I think I see magb
- 53:39like I'm regretting this hurd hell. I also love a game that's tough on
- 53:46matt look. Okay, from a from a poetry perspective, the first poem
- 53:54made me feel more, but from a word invention perspective, I loved what
- 53:59was going on with that second one. So I've got to keep this bar
- 54:01high. And I'm going to say five points as well because I love that.
- 54:06And yeah, a lungs and that final word from you, John,
- 54:10Harmphonious is also just great, like it means exactly what you know it means.
- 54:15I love the postization of actual words, because that's what bad poetry should
- 54:21do. Like you're you're taking words that do exist and just fucking them up.
- 54:27Yes, it's about the vibe that it brings to you. All right?
- 54:32Should we go for one more poem each? Can I ask another poem
- 54:36of each team? Oh? Yeah, let's do it. Twist that dice,
- 54:39let's give that fright. I got poetry in my soul? Well,
- 54:44have we got oldra Yes, I've ruled it. Love love. If there's
- 54:52anything Bogans know about, it's love first in love and drew. If you
- 54:59would like to take the lead on this vogon poem about love scramberly we love
- 55:08our lines four fifittedly. Yeah, go on, then, everyone, come
- 55:32spratulate. I beg your Pardson. You heard him specially? Oh I hold
- 55:42you linely in skid somehow that's the grossest words. Pleasure, Oh no,
- 55:57and frumpd hate. All right, I think that's it. I think I've
- 56:04followed the structure of that poem. Okay, here is your volgone poem about
- 56:12love scrambly we love our lines for tharum if BELI no to everyone, come
- 56:22spatulate limely in skitch pleasure and frunket hate. It's almost too good. They're
- 56:30almost too good doing the comparison of what I was like, what is the
- 56:37one that we know that vogons love and it's bureaucracy and lighting up for shit
- 56:43and you know, come spatulating everywhere. Apparently that might be my new favorite
- 56:49word. It is fantastic. And you know what it's This is Volguan poetry.
- 56:54And it's almost too good because you you've made a comparison there between I
- 56:58believe love and pleasure and hate. But I suppose the poem was about love.
- 57:02So I'm gonna say four points for that one. I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 57:06knock a point off there for it being too damn good. It's outside of
- 57:10the mode. If it has demonstrable skill is made. Yeah, it's that's
- 57:20That's how bad Vogue on poetry is. It makes you doubt reality. This
- 57:23all round is making me doubt real. It's only the third worst poetry in
- 57:28the universe, mind you, Yes, so we don't want to be the
- 57:31worst. Yeah, that's what we're going for here. If nothing else,
- 57:36I think you got the T shirt with comes spatulate. Let's uh, let's
- 57:42not do the artwork for that one. I'm picturing it in the like phoenix
- 57:45right objection font. Okay, let's let's have one more crack at some vogue
- 57:53on poetry, this time back on over to the petunias. We got one
- 57:58more topic left to do, Audre keipro until it until it produces a new
- 58:00topic. War please, it's war war war existence is useless. Very good
- 58:14voice that there's so much delicious paperwork involved in war, Audre. When,
- 58:20if you're ready, take away yours. John's vogue on poem on war Boom
- 58:30the booms A lord did ah God, Well, I want to come up
- 58:38with a god any words, any word is good? Said uh smashing smashing
- 58:52worth the weight, it wasn't don't mock me exploded the ram shorkle m shack
- 59:04period got it. There's no punctuation in vogan poetry. Gallant Lee volgantrious stormed
- 59:21up for two grumple fromp his Oh man, mm hm take us on foot.
- 59:39Now we're gonna have to leave the whole silence in your vogue on poem
- 59:49about war is boom the booms a large it smashing exploded the ramshackle shack gallantly
- 59:58volgun storm up for to grumple fromp his foot. I think I felt ready
- 1:00:06for war with that. That was a rousing speech, and for that,
- 1:00:10for that exact same reason, I'm gonna have to give you four points,
- 1:00:13because it was too good at what it did. It was the line the
- 1:00:17ramshackle shack, the ramshackle shack, very doctor SEUs. I like it it.
- 1:00:23I think it was ram shorkle. That's it's so hard to write down
- 1:00:30fakes real fast. It's one of those things where I see it as you
- 1:00:34were, like, oh shit, I gotta write these down. I also
- 1:00:37couldn't remember what I used either. That's why I don't make notes ahead of
- 1:00:44time out of your brain. Whereas I weirdly prepared for this round slightly by
- 1:00:51the fact that on the ferry ride home today I just read the run poetry
- 1:00:57can I read? I was like, you know what we're talking about?
- 1:00:58The show later, let me get it fresh one. I think you all
- 1:01:01nailed that. I think there was some fantastic vogue on poetry there from all
- 1:01:06four of you. But that is the end of the round. Let's ask
- 1:01:08Marvin to calculate the latest scores. Oh, he's too depressed for maths.
- 1:01:15And those scores are you are each eleven points. It's all tied up,
- 1:01:19as though I can do that by design the size of a planet. The
- 1:01:28storms Round three next, But first, these messages from the serious Cybernetics corporation,
- 1:01:36known for their catchy jingles and elite level marketing, but also faulty products
- 1:01:39designed to break. Sound familiar in any company back soon stick your head in
- 1:01:46a big. Round three is called a galaxy of pop culture. I have
- 1:01:57before me a list of twelve clues to other aspects of pop culture that have
- 1:02:01been influenced by, or have referenced Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Those twelve
- 1:02:07clues are split into three categories, the Tricky trillions, which are worth three
- 1:02:12points, the Arthur Averages, which are worth two points, and worth a
- 1:02:16lowly one point. We have the simple slatly bart fasts. Oh Billy,
- 1:02:24So just a nice, nice simple Do you want easy, medium or hard?
- 1:02:29Simple? As so we will begin. I was gonna say with the
- 1:02:30team in last place, but it is tied, so let's just begin with
- 1:02:34deep thoughts. Deep thoughts, what kind of clue would you like? I
- 1:02:37mean tricky trillions for sure? Right? Oh yeah, I was gonna say,
- 1:02:39we're going ham right, you know, not to not to expose my
- 1:02:43logic, but if we get it wrong, we steal them being able to
- 1:02:46get it later. Exactly, there's no reason to go low at all.
- 1:02:51All right, good strategy there, good stuff, And thank you for keeping
- 1:02:53the illusion of choice there as well. That's that's your clude. Were three
- 1:03:00points, if you can get this. This pop punk band had an album
- 1:03:06titled Don't Panic and a song titled so long and thanks for all the booze.
- 1:03:12So wrong. It's right, but nothing personal. I know I've heard
- 1:03:15the fucking song too. Is the bad part. I know I've heard them
- 1:03:19pop punk band. Huh, there's a lot of those. Well right after
- 1:03:23our time. You have no idea, man, No, I did not,
- 1:03:30you know, Just to defend myself a little bit. This is a
- 1:03:31time when I wasn't into music, so I would just find like that one
- 1:03:35song from a band, and like, I still have that one song somewhere
- 1:03:38in my iTunes library. But I could never tell you a name of the
- 1:03:40band. I feel like they were a band that, like the name itself,
- 1:03:43was a reference to something in the content. The Marvins. Going with
- 1:03:47the Marvins, I mean that does no, I do not have a better
- 1:03:52idea is the answer to that? All right? Going with the Marvins.
- 1:03:54It's not the Marvins. This is tricky of course, hence the name Tricky
- 1:03:59Trillions. The band was All Time Low, All Time Low. I was
- 1:04:04gonna say, I know that name. That's about as far as I could
- 1:04:08go, So I was question right. I could probably sing it if you
- 1:04:13played their top hit. Yeah, I think I think Weightless was was a
- 1:04:17big one of those yea from from All Time Low, and that their names
- 1:04:21of their albums are so wrong it's right and nothing personal as well. There
- 1:04:26was extra extra little clues in there. Hopefully one listener got that one.
- 1:04:29There's a there's an All Time Low fan out there. I can tell that
- 1:04:31they like the way you were saying that. I was like, that's got
- 1:04:34to mean something such albums or tours or every word is carefully placed here.
- 1:04:43So we will throw things over to the petunias. What category would you like?
- 1:04:47What are you thinking? I was gonna say Tricky Trillion just to follow
- 1:04:49the exact same logic and copy them. Terrible or average average and guarantee of
- 1:04:58point. Yeah, the average we get, we get two points right,
- 1:05:01and then and then it's you. They can keep get going after three and
- 1:05:06not getting it, and we don't have to worry about it because I wouldn't
- 1:05:10have gotten that one anyway. I probably would have guessed. I would have
- 1:05:13guessed a band, but it would have been wrong. Yeah, so you're
- 1:05:17going for author averages Arthur average. I think I think that's a safer bet.
- 1:05:21Yeah, score a couple of points, that'd be cool. Here is
- 1:05:24your author average for two points. An Arthur Dent caricature was referenced in this
- 1:05:29twenty twenty two animated comedy, A movie filled with references and caricatures. You
- 1:05:36say animated? Mm hmm. What was the big animated one? Was there
- 1:05:41a big animated one? Oh? H space Jam? Was that twenty twenty
- 1:05:45two? When did the Last Space gam come out? I would believe if
- 1:05:47somebody said definitively that or they felt definitively that it was twenty twenty two,
- 1:05:51I wouldn't disagree with them because it was full of caricatures, so we could
- 1:05:59Oh, was that virus and threat protection? Did you say, Matt,
- 1:06:06that it was a film? Yes, yes, twenty twenty two animated comedy
- 1:06:11movie. Yeah, I don't have anything else coming to me right now,
- 1:06:14which I've got a kid, so I should know a bit more. But
- 1:06:16yeah, let's you're going with space Jam. Yeah, let's do it.
- 1:06:24You're on the right lines with space Jam. But it's not space Jam.
- 1:06:27This is Chippendale Rescue Rangers, the twenty twenty two film that was filled with
- 1:06:32pop culture references. That was the whole gimmick and the plot of the Now
- 1:06:38I even watched that still stuff I didn't see. I also watched it,
- 1:06:43and yeah, do you what the reference was? Yeahur Arthur Denti is in
- 1:06:47it. There's a there's a guy walking around dressed pretty much like John is
- 1:06:51now in the in the scene where it's a lot of the intellectual property characters
- 1:06:58gathering. Still. I wonder if they had to pay for that, or
- 1:07:01they're just like, let's we're Disney, we can steal this from this dead
- 1:07:05Yeah. Probably probably that question didn't seem so average. This Yeah, okay,
- 1:07:12there you go for a that was probably an average move. That's better
- 1:07:19than I thought it would be. That's what I heard about it. Yeah,
- 1:07:21yeah, I enjoyed it. That's how we felt. Let's move on
- 1:07:24to another clue. Honestly then, given how tough that level two question was,
- 1:07:29I think we stick to wear guns and go with three because if we're
- 1:07:30gonna get stumped, at least we have a chance of stumbling into more points
- 1:07:34balls to the wall. Let's do it. And also, I feel like
- 1:07:36the music's out of the way now, I know I know other media.
- 1:07:40Okay, okay, maybe let's go for all the media. That's why roman
- 1:07:45Stone Tablet's damage. We're not going to get too far from that. But
- 1:07:49here is your other media. This m M O r p G features an
- 1:07:55island called Moss Harmless, but you'll need some Java if you're going to XP
- 1:08:00grind all night. It's definitely a world of Warcraft. I don't play it
- 1:08:04enough, but I know most of the islands and lands names. I feel
- 1:08:08like if that was the thing, I would have heard it by now.
- 1:08:10I want to say RuneScape because I think the general Oh yeah, it wasn't
- 1:08:15the whole thing with the RuneScape. It was all Java based back in the
- 1:08:17day. Yeah, it has to be RuneScape. No, you're right,
- 1:08:19yeah, RuneScape is my kid. I think I'm I mean, it might
- 1:08:23not be right, but I'm gonna confident. I'm confident you're going for RuneScape?
- 1:08:28It is RuneScape? Yes, three points. It's a tricky question.
- 1:08:31God, wow, you good stuff with the Java knowledge there hit the hit
- 1:08:36the right old man there. As soon as you said RuneScape, I just
- 1:08:40I literally saw the Java splash screen. I've been transported. All right,
- 1:08:49let's let's have another clue the petunias what you're going with? I mean the
- 1:08:54three pointer scares me? Yeah, that's all you do. That's that's the
- 1:09:00thing is it? Does it does frighten me that they have acquired a three
- 1:09:04pointer? Does it frighten me enough to also attempt the last three point?
- 1:09:11This two more three point is left one of the two of the three.
- 1:09:15Stick with the average. I personally think we're safer with average. I think
- 1:09:18we're more likely to get it, and if we're one point behind them,
- 1:09:23that's better than than that means jack shit. When it comes to quick fire,
- 1:09:26Yep, let's go for another average. You're going for another Arthur Average.
- 1:09:30Here we go. This band's third album and its lead single A both
- 1:09:33Hitchhiker's references. No surprises if you're lucky on this, but if you're wrong,
- 1:09:39you'll be let down. Oh it's h it's Radiohead yeah, andid Android
- 1:09:45Yeah, yeah, it absolutely is Radiohead for two points. Then yeah,
- 1:09:47I was like thinking this, I was, I was like lucky let down.
- 1:09:53Yeah okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, no, I was.
- 1:09:56I was kind of thinking like old band roughly the same as twenty twenty two
- 1:10:00movie in terms of remembering. Yeah, oh yeah, I mean there are
- 1:10:06a great old Hey. Look, twenty sixteen was their last album release.
- 1:10:11I've been eagerly awaiting another one. But until they release another one, they
- 1:10:14are an old band. Yeah. Sweet, Okay, back on over to
- 1:10:17deep thoughts your choice of the board. Do we continue with our trend of
- 1:10:21three pointers? Yeah, hundred percent. Well, I mean it's not much
- 1:10:25of a trend because we missed one and got one, but uh we're at
- 1:10:30now. Yes, yeah, yeah, Okay, let's see if that streak
- 1:10:33can continue for three points. This knitting pattern, often used for shoals,
- 1:10:41has forty two teeth and was designed by Martina Bem. I'm subtly establishing fiber
- 1:10:47arts as a known fandom on this podcast. I love that there's at least
- 1:10:55one person yelling at their phone right now. I don't even know what the
- 1:10:59term means in this context. Perfect let's go ahead and assume it's a Hitchhiker's
- 1:11:04reference. Maybe it's not. Let's assume it is what would be a good
- 1:11:11knitting stitch name from the Hitchhikers. I mean I could see it being called
- 1:11:16the Douglas stitch. Like that actually sounds like a thing I could hear someone
- 1:11:19doing, like just doing it. Douglas stitch here, Douglas. I don't
- 1:11:24know why I sound like guys just say you don't know. I don't even
- 1:11:30guess what this happened. Douglas dish. I like that, Yeah, Douglas.
- 1:11:36If it's Adams stitch, I'm gonna be bummed because there's only two names
- 1:11:41there. But I think I think that's a solid it's his middle name,
- 1:11:45Noel. It's for the real hard fans. Yeah, they were bigger nerds
- 1:11:50than us. Yeah, let's go with the Douglas. You're going with the
- 1:11:54Douglas. That is a very good stitch name, and I think it's even
- 1:11:57better than the one that they've got. This This is a stitch known as
- 1:12:00the hitch Hiker. Oh, I should have the right come on starting a
- 1:12:13beef with them now. If I like the Douglas, I think it should
- 1:12:16be called the Douglas stitch. I'm going to change the Wikipedia and then we
- 1:12:19get up three points. I hate how I heard that, and I was
- 1:12:24like, oh, yeah, that makes sense if it's common for shawls.
- 1:12:27Then it was like, dang, it really is a fandom. Biber arts.
- 1:12:31Yeah, I believe it. Okay, the petunias. What are you
- 1:12:34going with? There's one three points left, a couple of two pointers,
- 1:12:41all the singers, I'm okay, I'm okay, sticking with average, all
- 1:12:45the questions, all the single questions. Sorry, let's go for John's motto,
- 1:12:53sticking with the yeah in my choice of friends podcasting partners. Okay,
- 1:13:00here is your two point clue. One of the protagonists of this TV series
- 1:13:04lives at an apartment forty two, and this Fox shouldn't be too surprised by
- 1:13:11extraterrestrials. I can't say for sure, but I think it's Futurama. Oh,
- 1:13:17I mean, wait, no, Fox? No, what's Fox?
- 1:13:20I think of? Mister Fox is the only one that I can think of.
- 1:13:25But is it a TV series, you said? Or TV series?
- 1:13:30Where is there a Fox? Where's a Fox? The only other Fox I'm
- 1:13:34thinking of is the Mighty Boosh that's the only one I can think of.
- 1:13:40Robin Hood. Yeah. Well, and the reason why why Fox made sense
- 1:13:45to me at first was Futurama originally aired on Fox. Even though Extra Terrestrials
- 1:13:50Extra, what's an alien show? I don't know anything about it. I
- 1:13:55know I choose to believe X files choose to Fox Molder, Fox Molder,
- 1:14:02X files. I didn't think you were going to get that, but you
- 1:14:05did. X files figured that out. Wow, Like go with you,
- 1:14:11drama. It was fool, John Odra, thank you so much. We
- 1:14:20binging it as we speak. Every time we see his apartment, I think
- 1:14:24of this. Oh wow, I was just watching Ben Andy's faces. That
- 1:14:29that was. That was to watch the video. Okay, back on over
- 1:14:35to deep thoughts. You have control of the board. It's the pointer.
- 1:14:41Is the last three pointer up there? Absolutely? You want to take it?
- 1:14:44Yeah, I'm stupid. What what weird fan throw this time? Let's
- 1:14:51find out because extreme sports will be so mad. In the two thousand and
- 1:14:57five film The Rebuilding of Earth uses Coynist Katzi photographic editing techniques, a film
- 1:15:03that features time laps footage set to the music of this composer. You're not
- 1:15:09even using rewards anymore. I like that face made. Then did you say
- 1:15:13that again? Because I think at least two of those words used weren't real.
- 1:15:16Absolutely. In the two thousand and five film The Rebuilding of Earth uses
- 1:15:23coynist Katsi photographic editing techniques. This is a film that features time lapse footage
- 1:15:30set to the music of this composer. It's gate Leapers is high brow.
- 1:15:33We are a high brow podcast. I did not think classical music would be
- 1:15:39the fourth fandom. I thought the outlier here may have clarified something, but
- 1:15:47it declarified at least three of them. Okay, so my understanding is at
- 1:15:53the at the end, you know, when they rebuild the Earth. Yeah,
- 1:15:55and it's like all the time laps. There is a separate film.
- 1:16:00So there is a separate film called I'm gonna have to say it again coin
- 1:16:02Iskatsy, which is what the two thousand and five Hitchhiker's Guide film was inspired
- 1:16:09by when doing the these kind of shots at the end, and you're looking
- 1:16:14for the music from the coats. But yes, yes, that is correct.
- 1:16:20Holy so let's just pick a classical composer whose name we both know.
- 1:16:26Okay, So, so who's like, what classical composer would you Well,
- 1:16:30it doesn't need to be a classical composer. It could be contemporary if we're
- 1:16:33not going I mean like, if I was going to rebuild a planet,
- 1:16:36I'd probably pick like Hans Zimmer, but he's expensive, and I don't know
- 1:16:41what Capatsy is. But if it comes Batchelor or something like that, my
- 1:16:48favorite. So my guess is they would have had to have gone with,
- 1:16:56Uh, something that was was public domain at that point, is whatever this
- 1:17:03come Dragle fu Stick movie was they needed? Uh, they didn't have the
- 1:17:10budget to hire a modern composer, So what would you rebuild a planet to?
- 1:17:16I feel like chop is a good answer for this. For some reason,
- 1:17:19I don't know why. I want to say, yeah, yeah,
- 1:17:21Chopin might not be bad. I could see that's why not. I don't
- 1:17:28know a better answer than that, Yeah, why not? Why not chopin?
- 1:17:30But we'll go with we'll go We'll go with, Okay, chopping you
- 1:17:36two, I'm gonna kill myself. You chop you chomp into. No,
- 1:17:43it's not it's not Chopin. It's a good guess. It's Philip Glass to
- 1:17:46the Music of composed of Philip Glass. Uh I think that's yeah, that's
- 1:17:53why it's a tricky trillion and they out there are no more tricky trillion questions
- 1:17:57left, So back on over to the petunias. You've got two Arthur averages
- 1:18:01and then the simple slatty bartfasts are untouched. You want to stick with average.
- 1:18:05Yeah, this has been working out for us, all right, sticking
- 1:18:09with the average. Here you go for two points. This classic video game
- 1:18:13shooter would offer the rank of mostly harmless in multiplayer. Playing this with friends
- 1:18:18meant forming a special bond. Oh, it's got to be. It's got
- 1:18:23to be Golden KNIGHTE special bond. I'll get that one. That one you
- 1:18:27didn't need a few minutes to work out. Sorry, sorry, now that's
- 1:18:30okay. It is. It's Golden Eye, specifically Golden Eye double O seven.
- 1:18:33You can have the rank of mostly harmless in that but two points we
- 1:18:39were the right age for that. Slappers only, golden slab slabers only.
- 1:18:44No odd load. You can be Civilian number two and get away with the
- 1:18:48same the same advantage as odd job because everyone knows that you can't play as
- 1:18:53odd job, no matter how bad it was. I always wanted to kill
- 1:18:58some with a laser watch worked useless fucking weapon. I went back and started
- 1:19:03to play that game. It's not good like that, Like it's so poorly.
- 1:19:10Oh yeah, that's the ability to like jump like you're on a balcony
- 1:19:13and you can't or aim your crosshairs without pressing another button. It's rough,
- 1:19:17but it was good for the time. Yeah, okay, deep thoughts.
- 1:19:21Uh, the control of the board is yours. We got one author average
- 1:19:26left and the right. Regardless of how poorly our strategy has worked thus far,
- 1:19:30I don't see any reason to deviate from Nope, Arthur Average, you're
- 1:19:34going for the author average. Okay, you can get them, we can
- 1:19:36get them. Oh my bad, we've actually did run out of author averages.
- 1:19:42I I was gonna say. My math was like, how is it
- 1:19:46right? You just have to give us two points if we get this one
- 1:19:51for the for the simple one. No, I'm gonna I'm gonna set it
- 1:19:55up again in case I decided to cut that for time. I can best
- 1:20:01joke now now on every take, Ben's just going to say like, oh,
- 1:20:05after you fucked up a second ago. Yeah, so I'm gonna leave
- 1:20:09this whole bit in. That's your prerogative. Ben, in the next round
- 1:20:13and start with just a recording of Ben. I think we should move on.
- 1:20:18Yeah, we'll just make an ai Ben, he's done that before.
- 1:20:21Yeah, that's true, it's true. I got one think so deep thoughts.
- 1:20:27There are only simple, slatty bart fast questions left. So what do
- 1:20:31you think, Ben? What should we go for? Ah? It's a
- 1:20:33tough decision. I mean, if there were still some two pointers out,
- 1:20:36I would love to go for one, but I guess we can, so
- 1:20:40one pointer it is. Yeah, let's go for the slightly bars. Okay,
- 1:20:44okay, it's all stay it in. Well done, guys. Here
- 1:20:47is your question. Here is your clue for one point, with four,
- 1:20:51eight, fifteen, sixteen, and twenty three being the other numbers. A
- 1:20:56producer of this TV show confirmed forty two as a hitchhike his reference. Hurly,
- 1:21:00you'll get this one. I don't know, Ben, I'm pretty lost
- 1:21:04on this one. All right, Yeah, you got this for one point.
- 1:21:06Let's not take any more time over it. There's there's a point,
- 1:21:11thank it? Shall I just quick fire these because we've only got the left.
- 1:21:15Yeah, thet'll preview. Okay, the petunias. Here you go.
- 1:21:18This X rated billionaire claims that The Hitchhiker's Guide is his favorite book series,
- 1:21:24but I find him boring when it comes to taxes. You better pay Pal.
- 1:21:30Yes, it is indeed, Elon Musk, good stuff. The biggest
- 1:21:33shame, sad fucking man. You could tell he just doesn't understand the buck.
- 1:21:40Three different references and not a single pejorative. Pretty good, Pretty good
- 1:21:44for me. It's actually I respect your restraint. I was enjoying the PayPal
- 1:21:49and the boring pun too much. They were great. They were well more
- 1:21:56creative and innovative than anything that he has done. Yes, exactly, there
- 1:21:59we Oh, there we go, there's the burn. Yeah, okay,
- 1:22:02deep thoughts, Here is your clue. A two thousand and seven episode of
- 1:22:06this sci fi TV series was titled forty two and featured multiple generated references.
- 1:22:14To the number regenerated references, you could say, one of my favorite Doctor
- 1:22:18Who episodes. Yeah, there we go. It is indeed Doctor Who.
- 1:22:21There's a point for the deep thoughts and the final clue for the petunias.
- 1:22:26Here it is. This sitcom featured several Hitchhikers references across its twelve season run.
- 1:22:31They say this show made geeks chic, but at Gate leapers with each
- 1:22:35and every episode. We're desperate to prove them wrong. I mean, I'm
- 1:22:41assuming it's those assholes on Big Bang Theory, but I never never watched it.
- 1:22:45Yeah, it felt like the first couple episodes they were laughing with me,
- 1:22:48and then it just didn't feel like they were laughing with me anymore.
- 1:22:51But yes, probably Big Bang. It is indeed the Big Bang Theory.
- 1:22:55There's a few Hitchhikers references throughout the twelve years, because what else are you
- 1:22:59going to talk about across I bet there is a shit ton of references.
- 1:23:01They love that shit, and I bet they wish I would laugh at them.
- 1:23:05And I bet you have the references. The fact that someone said the
- 1:23:09name of one of the characters with no reason long yeah, yeah, Sheldon
- 1:23:14says, oh, don't panic, and then ever and then the laugh track,
- 1:23:16laugh track happen. So that's how you make successful billion dollar comedy.
- 1:23:19Yeah, Okay, that is the end of round three. Let's ask Trillian
- 1:23:25to calculate the latest scores. She's a mathematician and astrophysicist in the books,
- 1:23:30but a manic pixie dream girl in the movie. So two thousand and five,
- 1:23:34it's just what happened. Yeah, why you both? That's true.
- 1:23:39In twenty twenty four we would say why not both? She probably made music
- 1:23:43too. You don't know where she keeps the ukulelea. That's a big ship.
- 1:23:49It's a big ship. Yes, those scores are deep. Thoughts are
- 1:23:55on sixteen points, but the Petunias have taken a lead with their strategy have
- 1:24:00nineteen points. Okay, before we get to the quick fire around, let's
- 1:24:03talk prizes. This episode. Star prize is the concept of hitch hiking,
- 1:24:08So stick out your thumb and see where the road takes you, probably to
- 1:24:11some guy's basement, but our winning team will also receive the real answer to
- 1:24:16life, the universe, and everything. Yes, you guessed it. It's
- 1:24:21Jesus that so I get Jesus? Yeah? Why not? This section written
- 1:24:30by address parents. Yes we can all have Jesus. I think I could
- 1:24:32do a lot with Jesus under my belt. Hell yeah, rock on,
- 1:24:38Sexy Christ? What's happening? I should stop now, I should stop saying
- 1:24:41words. I don't think he's like me very much. We the last time
- 1:24:45he hung out with Juice, did in? Well? I think rock on
- 1:24:49Sexy Christ might be the new motto of this shit. My next team name
- 1:24:54rock on Sexy Christ. Up. Next is our crucial quickfire around, But
- 1:24:59first we must play one final set of ads. You don't need to buy
- 1:25:02any of the products or services they're offering, unless it's towels. You should
- 1:25:06always buy a towel. A final quick fire around will test your broader pop
- 1:25:17culture knowledge, and it's called so long. This game's a list of fish.
- 1:25:27The Hitchhiker's Guide is full of references to marine animals, including the highly
- 1:25:32intelligent species of dolphin, who we all know will do anything for fish.
- 1:25:38No one reference in the hand jobs, no one at all. No,
- 1:25:42I mean, that's what a scientist would do for ability to get published.
- 1:25:46Oh yeah, I mean, and then there's a deeper story there. Yeah,
- 1:25:51I need no more scientists. So in this game, I will give
- 1:25:57our players clues to a marine animal from pop culture history. We're talking fish,
- 1:26:01dolphins, sharks, whales, the big the big fish looking ones.
- 1:26:04There's gonna be no crabs. I don't believe you. Those clues will be
- 1:26:09in this Those clues will be in the style of a Hitchhiker's Guide entry on
- 1:26:15this particular character. Oh and there's of course a classic gate Leapers twist.
- 1:26:19You need to say so long and thanks for all the fish after after your
- 1:26:24answer, simple as that, or I can't give you the point. It's
- 1:26:27quick fire, so buzz in by yelling out your team name. Let's practice
- 1:26:30that now. I love it. Thoughts and petunias, it's a good weekend.
- 1:26:39Which way you go with that? I don't know. I think here's
- 1:26:42the thing. I've had two beers for the first time. That sounds like
- 1:26:45a pretty pleasant week Yeah, sitting around thinking about punias. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:26:50surrounded by beautiful flowers and that hole over there exactly thereas how do you
- 1:27:00think we planted the petunias? So, for example, if I said this
- 1:27:09mammal was the target of a maniacal quest and the origin of the phrase white
- 1:27:14whale, it's also how you might describe yes, true, moby dick,
- 1:27:19so long and thanks for all the fish, exactly that. That's exactly how
- 1:27:23you would answer the questions in this round. You can interrupt me at any
- 1:27:27point. Are we ready? Let's do it all right, I will start
- 1:27:31the timer. Now, this fish is the result of excess pollution from the
- 1:27:36nearby nuclear power plant. Deep. I think I heard petunias first there from
- 1:27:42John three eyed fish and thanks for all the fish. Yeah, I take
- 1:27:46it, I'll take it. We know the name, We know the name
- 1:27:49of the dam fish it you do know the name of the fish. It
- 1:27:53is also officially on wikipedias known as three eyed fish slash blinky blink. I
- 1:28:01would have gone specific if if the rest of the world had but three eyed
- 1:28:05fish is apparently valid. This is why I lose this game. Not fast
- 1:28:13enough correct. This predator is known for his time on land, perhaps more
- 1:28:19so than the ocean. He's thought to be the fourth best member of the
- 1:28:24suicide squad. And this is yes, John, King Sharks, so long
- 1:28:28and thanks for all the fish. It is King Shark. That's who we're
- 1:28:30looking for here, good stuff, fun we're getting This small bluefish is thought
- 1:28:36to be one of the most forgetful creatures. Indeed, yes, drewe it
- 1:28:45is indeed Dory from finding Nemo. Good stuff. It's one of those Pixar
- 1:28:48fish I just have. Yeah, And then we learned that the forgetfulness is
- 1:28:53actually trauma informed in the sequel. That's like, that's just picks. It's
- 1:28:57amazing. Often referred to as the Lassie of the sea. This, yes,
- 1:29:03Ben Flipper, so long, and thanks for all the fish. It
- 1:29:06is indeed flipper. Yes, I'm old as fuck. I'm having I have
- 1:29:14that. I have another one sitting here, just ready to go. I
- 1:29:16know it's not going to come up, but I'm ready for it. All
- 1:29:17right, there's only so many fish. Okay. This fish is known to
- 1:29:23have two forms, one considerably more fish like than the other. When she's
- 1:29:29not a five year old girl, she's a goldfish or no, yes,
- 1:29:33drue for all the fish, it is pono. Yes the studio Gibbli fan.
- 1:29:39Okay, next clue. This proud escapologist Orca desires only to be on
- 1:29:44the other side of that row. Yeah, yeah, I definitely heard petunias
- 1:29:55over the sound of someone vomiting. Willy or free Willy, so long,
- 1:30:01Thanks for all the fish. Yeah, I actually have here. Willie brackets
- 1:30:04free because I don't know. Yeah, free Jeffrey, Willie, free William,
- 1:30:16thank you, his mother calls him. Okay, your next clue.
- 1:30:23This intelligent, anthropomorphic mud skipper has developed enough dextrous abilities to be able to
- 1:30:29fire a gun. He is an underwater secret agent after all, but yes,
- 1:30:34Ben Muddy mud Skipper, so long and thanks for all the fish.
- 1:30:41Is that a real thing? Sorry, it's that's that's interesting. Okay,
- 1:30:47No, that's not what I've got here, because I don't unless you can
- 1:30:50prove that muddy mud Skipper once held a gun. I mean, is that
- 1:30:59would not hold on? Let me google it. The clue does also say
- 1:31:01secret agent as well. I didn't see a gun. Yeah, it doesn't
- 1:31:05fully match the clue. Otherwise I give you this. This is James Pondus.
- 1:31:12James pond a frog. I thought it was a frog, a cod.
- 1:31:17He's a mud skipper. Okay, your next clue. This yellow and
- 1:31:21blue tropical fish can often be found. Yes, John Flounder, so long
- 1:31:28and thanks for all the fish. It is indeed flounder flounder from The Little
- 1:31:30Mermaid. Yes, this Irish fish is a creature from the Fennian cycle of
- 1:31:35mythology, believed to be a wise man who was transformed into a stream dwelling
- 1:31:41creature. Yes, I I know this one. Is it whiskey fish.
- 1:31:51It's a it's some kind of koy or a carp. It's some kind of
- 1:31:55carb. It's a fucking magic carp. It's a magic. It's not magic,
- 1:32:00but they locked it in. I'm afraid it's not that. It's a
- 1:32:04good guess, but it's it's not that Petunias. I feel like there's one
- 1:32:10that was a type of fish like this that had a name that started with
- 1:32:13an N, Nimrod. It's not Nimrod, but I appreciate it as a
- 1:32:16guess. It's not. This is the salmon of knowledge, which is where
- 1:32:24the name from. No. I will read another clue or that that works
- 1:32:33too. It's still unknown whether this character is actually a fish, at least
- 1:32:38to me. On the movie poster, it appears she's a fish, but
- 1:32:41the cast list says it's Jamie Lee Curtis. We'll have to ask John Clees.
- 1:32:45I suppose that was That was thoughts just before Petunia there, Yeah,
- 1:32:51wander so long as thanks, just in time, Just in time? Yes
- 1:32:58it is. Do youone know if that film actually has a fish in it?
- 1:33:01Has anyone seen that film? I have no idea. I know that
- 1:33:04now that you say it. I know the name, but that's what all
- 1:33:05I know. She's like, I mean she's a mermaid. I mean,
- 1:33:09is that a fish? I don't know. She's got boobs. I've never
- 1:33:11met a fish with boobs. Yeah, a lot more fish in the sea,
- 1:33:17that's what they mean by that. Yeah, some of them have boobs.
- 1:33:20The name of this vicious shark is still unknown, despite his many attacks
- 1:33:26on unsuspecting beach goers. Yeah, Drew Drew for deep there, it's the
- 1:33:30shark from Jaws, who I think canonically is named Bruce. So long and
- 1:33:34thanks for all the fish Yep, that'll do. I accept Bruce or Jaws
- 1:33:38the shark as no one really knows that it's one of the greatest villains in
- 1:33:43movie history. He doesn't have a name. I'm pretty sure his name is
- 1:33:45Bruce. That's what they called the model the animatronic, but it was named
- 1:33:54after Spielberg's lawyer commentary, Okay, quick before the buzzer, small yellow and
- 1:34:04leech like and probably be honest battle fish, so long and thanks for all
- 1:34:14the fish. I'm gonna give it to you. I'm gonna There was a
- 1:34:16huge blast of noise there where I heard every single person say the same thing,
- 1:34:20But I'm going to give it to deep thoughts there, there's there's the
- 1:34:23point I definitely did not call out our name of busy listening to is the
- 1:34:30sound of babelfish. Okay, that is the buzzer, and I'll edit that
- 1:34:39sentence in before we get to the final scores. And it was. It
- 1:34:45couldn't have been closer. I'd like to thank our players. You've saved Earth
- 1:34:49from a corporate, bureaucratic demise, once again proving that this is indeed a
- 1:34:55work of fiction. True. Let's talk. Let's talk Carrying Waywards, the
- 1:35:00Supernatural podcast. You co host. You've just wrapped up season seven. Yeah,
- 1:35:05we just wrapped season seven. We are by the time this comes out,
- 1:35:09eight should just be starting. It has been an amazing shift in direction
- 1:35:14for the show because it's been a lot more fun season six to seven or
- 1:35:16a slog and we're doing much better. And I am looking forward to everyone
- 1:35:20coming to join as we have some fun new stuff happening. Nice, amazing,
- 1:35:25nice links to everything Carrying Wayward in the show notes, Drew, do

- 1:35:39it. Hell yes, I will put links to that also in the show
- 1:35:42notes. Thank you, Ben John. Let's talk Exploration first, because you
- 1:35:45just put a new episode out about Mad Magazine. We're not dead, yes,
- 1:35:57well, yeah, yeah we are. We're a little more sporadic with
- 1:36:00our releases these days with the Exploration the podcast. But there's almost two hundred
- 1:36:06episodes to uh to listen to on a on a backlog there, so go
- 1:36:12check it out. You'll probably find something you think is pretty neat. Yeah,
- 1:36:15and we're going to record a debrief right after this that. Uh,
- 1:36:19are you sure it's not just gonna be going no guarantee understand it. We've
- 1:36:29got one that I haven't edited. Yeah. We're still releasing things. Yeah,
- 1:36:32work, We are alive, and Space Oddities will hopefully be having a
- 1:36:38Kickstarter this like early summer, ye summer summertime. Uh, Space Oudities number
- 1:36:44three is coming to Kickstarter. You can find numbers one and two either online
- 1:36:49at Drive through Comics or on our website space odescomic dot com. They're nice.
- 1:36:55Got a link Big Cartel if you want to get like a paper copy
- 1:36:58in your hands, Yeah, you can get it, smell and lick.
- 1:37:00Yeah, read it first and then lick it. You do it your copy.
- 1:37:04You can do it, yes, exactly to put no restrictions on my
- 1:37:10liquor copy and the and the reader. Yeah, you don't even need to
- 1:37:14read it. I don't care. Just lick it. Copy for licking and
- 1:37:16a copy for reading. Yeah, I'd appreciate it if you read it.
- 1:37:19I put a lot of work into that thing. But oh yeah, it's
- 1:37:24it's fantastic stuff. And look, if you if you are listening to this,
- 1:37:26if you've found us here, you probably love Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
- 1:37:30So you will probably love Space Oddities links to why you can pick up
- 1:37:34a physical or digital copy in the show notes of this podcast. Yeah,
- 1:37:39and episode forty two that we did was Hitchhiker's Guide, and it's probably good.
- 1:37:43I don't have any you know, I'll link that specific episode good.
- 1:37:47Yeah, yeah, I'll take your word for it. Yeah. I went
- 1:37:53back to listen to it as prep let's find out if it helped. Not.
- 1:37:58Really, we're as ignorant then as we are now. Yeah, I'm
- 1:38:01a narcissist, so I like listening to us. I'm anist. And a
- 1:38:09huge thank you to Ash and Adam, Justin Dodberg, Aaron Randolph, and
- 1:38:13Derek and Taylor for their continued support at the highest tier over at patreon dot
- 1:38:16com forward slash Kate Leapers. You are our executive producers, so you have
- 1:38:21the power to adapt this audio format into a visual medium, replacing me with
- 1:38:27Martin Freeman. Okay, let's get to the final scores. Here we go.
- 1:38:31There was one point in it, guys, one point in it.
- 1:38:35Unfortunately, no one made it up to forty two, so you know,
- 1:38:41be more lightning round. I don't think Ben will be able to speak after
- 1:38:47that. It's probably deep thoughts. You finish on twenty two points, that's
- 1:38:56like forty two close. It's pretty close to forty two. There is a
- 1:39:00too. If it was a tie at twenty one, that would have been
- 1:39:01great. That would have been perfect. But that's not what's happened, because
- 1:39:04it would also be perfect if you got twenty I'm just saying that hasn't happened
- 1:39:12either, because this episode's winners are the Petunias, who finished with twenty three
- 1:39:18points. Not again. Yeah, someone someone had to win in this episode,
- 1:39:32so yeah, someone's John. Your losing streak has ended. Ah,
- 1:39:38but we had a good time here. This was fantastic. I loved this
- 1:39:40episode. Yeah, yeah, to quote the petunias. Not again. We
- 1:39:48have been gate leapers. Thank you so much for listening. Subscribe to this
