- 0:06Good evening everyone, this is Bob Gimire along with Phil Ruggiero and Frank Vespa at Yankee Stadium.
- 0:12And we're getting ready for the second game of the doubleheader between the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers.
- 0:18Tigers won a rather lackluster opening ball game, but it had a little more luster on it for the Tigers than for the Yankees,
- 0:24because they won it by a final score of 2-1. There was no scoring in the game after the fifth inning.
- 0:30The Tigers scored first in the third with two outs, Mickey Stanley tripled and scored on a wild pitch.
- 0:35Yankees tied it up in the third, Jean Michael singles, Charlo Bajor sacrificed in the second, and Thurman Mungston came through with a base hit.
- 0:43Tigers got the winning run in the fifth inning on a double by Stanley.
- 0:47They went to third on a ground ball of firsts by Kalein and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jim Nautrup.
- 0:53Yankees had two hits from Johnny Ellis, his last hit coming in the fourth inning, and that was the last hit for the New York Yankees.
- 1:00The closest they came, the tie in the ball game, was Roy White's long line drive that Kalein loped back and caught just above the fence in right field,
- 1:10and that was in the sixth inning, and the last ten men in a row went down.
- 1:15As the winning pitcher was the left-hander for the Detroit Tigers, Mike Kilkenny and Mel Salomayr, the loser.
- 1:22Two runs, eight hits for the Detroit Tigers, and one run and four hits for the New York Yankees in the opener of the doubleheader.
- 1:29The Tigers come up with their first win at Yankee Stadium this year. The Yankees have beaten them the other two ball games, and we'll have the other game in just a little while.
- 1:38Stan Vons will be the pitcher for the New York Yankees, and Joe Necrow, who pitched an outstanding ball game against the Yankees the last time he faced them out in Detroit.
- 1:47He'll be on the mound for the Detroit Tigers.
- 1:51We have a lineup for the second game, and we have changes for both teams.
- 1:55The Yankees' Horace Clark will be leading off and playing second base.
- 1:59Jake Gibbs will bat second in catch.
- 2:01Bobby Rocha hits third in centerfield.
- 2:03Roy White, the left fielder, bats fourth.
- 2:05Pete Ward will be at first base in fifth.
- 2:08Kurt Lusbury in right field, sixth.
- 2:10Jerry Kenney at third base, seventh.
- 2:12Gene Michael at shortstop, eighth.
- 2:14And Stan Vons will be on the mound and batting ninth.
- 2:17Vons has won four out of his last five starts, with McDaniel getting credit for a save in each of the four victories.
- 2:24And tonight will be his third shot of the year against the Tigers.
- 2:27He beats them four to one on May the 15th as he held a six-hitter, and then he had no decision against them on May the 25th.
- 2:33He went eight innings and he allowed three runs from six hits.
- 2:36The Tigers went in four to three.
- 2:38Steve Hamilton was the loser in relief on that one on a freehand home run.
- 2:42For the Tigers, Dalton Jones leads off at third base.
- 2:45Dan Stanley in centerfield bats second.
- 2:47Gates Brown in left field hits third.
- 2:50Norm Cash, the first baseman, bats fourth.
- 2:52And Cash did a great stop of a ground ball by Bobby Mercer in the ninth inning of the night cap.
- 2:58Russ Nagleton will be in right field batting fifth.
- 3:01Don Ward will be batting sixth.
- 3:04Jim Price catches seventh.
- 3:06Susan Gutierrez, eighth.
- 3:08And Joe Neacrow on the mound, and he'll be batting ninth.
- 3:11Don Ward will be the third baseman.
- 3:13So we have to change what we said about Dalton Jones.
- 3:16He will be playing second base in leading off.
- 3:19So Jones will be the second baseman, although he has played for the most part at third base.
- 3:24So it'll be Jones' second.
- 3:26He better go around the infield defensively for the Tigers.
- 3:29Cash at first, Jones at second.
- 3:31Shortstop Gutierrez and Ward at third.
- 3:34In the outfield and left field will be Gates Brown, centerfield Mickey Stanley,
- 3:38and in right field it'll be Russ Nagleton.
- 3:41He'll be playing defense defensively.
- 3:44At first base, Pete Ward at second base, Horace Clark.
- 3:47Shortstop Gene Michael at third base, Jerry Kenney.
- 3:50In the outfield, Roy White in left.
- 3:52Bobby Mercer in center.
- 3:54And Kirk Leffrey in right field.
- 4:01We'll be checking the scores of the other ballgames for you, but first this message.
- 4:06When Atlantic Richfield Company discovered oil on the north slope of Alaska,
- 4:13the place we call the Arco Circle, it took 100,000 tons of supplies and equipment to get started.
- 4:20It took 100,000 tons of pipes, cement, drills, gravel, pockets, gloves, cuts, heaters, tractors, ladders, radios, and orange juice.
- 4:31It took planes that carry 48,000 pounds and cost $4,000 a trip.
- 4:37It took 160 flights to set up one camp and five flights a day to keep it going.
- 4:43It took a specially constructed airstrip.
- 4:46In short, it took the biggest civilian airlift in history.
- 4:50At Atlantic Richfield, we went all the way to Alaska so we can provide your local Atlantic dealer
- 4:56with the finest Arco petroleum products for your car.
- 5:01On the scoreboard, Cleveland defeated Baltimore in the first game for doubleheader at Cleveland.
- 5:14Four to nothing as Dean Jantz hits a four-hitter.
- 5:17That's a tough golf club to shut out in that ballpark.
- 5:20Baltimore has all the big power hitters and the short fences in Cleveland,
- 5:24but the Indians did it four runs, seven hits, and one error for Cleveland.
- 5:27No runs, four hits, and no errors for Baltimore.
- 5:30Chance the winner was seven and five, and Clay Iver lose with 15 and eight.
- 5:34Tony Horton got the big blow, a three-run home in the first inning.
- 5:38That was, uh, then Greg Nellis hit one, his 17th, and that came in the sixth inning.
- 5:44Second game of the doubleheader, the pitchers are in, Harden against Dunning.
- 5:48The Red Sox failed the score on the top of the first inning at Washington.
- 5:51The speed is against Cox.
- 5:53Chicago beating Milwaukee seven to three, seven, eight, and oh for the White Sox,
- 5:57three, 11, and one for the Brewers.
- 5:59The winner was Jadewski, and the loser was Downing, and Bill Melton hit home run number 20.
- 6:05In the National League, the Giants beat Cincinnati by a score of 92.
- 6:10Reaver's of the winner was four and four, Washburn was starter and loser.
- 6:13The Giants got seven in the first inning, and Noriega came on the pitch in that first inning.
- 6:18Tony Perez has hit home run number 32, also picked up his 100th RBI of the season.
- 6:25Frank Johnson hit home run number three with two on in the first.
- 6:28And Willie McCovey, home run number 28, also with two on in the first inning.
- 6:32The Giants got seven in the first, and went on to win it by a score of nine to three.
- 6:37Pittsburgh in a big doubleheader against the Phillies.
- 6:39The Pirates lead the Phillies three to nothing at the end of sixth.
- 6:42Ellis against Bunning, that's the first of two.
- 6:45The Mets at St. Louis and Chicago at once, we all later, as well as Atlanta at Los Angeles and Houston at San Diego.
- 6:51So you're up to date.
- 6:52Right now on Yankee baseball, we pause for station identification.
- 6:57This is your guy, hi agent.
- 6:59Join me for your kind of music, weekday, three to seven.
- 7:02You're on the fresh air sound of Radio 81, WGY Schenectady.
- 7:11Bob Gimenez along with Frank Lester at the Polar Judo Yankee Stadium, and we're all set for the start of the second game of the doubleheader.
- 7:18Pam Bonson goes out to the mound to take his final warm-up.
- 7:22Bonson has won four out of his last five starts.
- 7:25And as we mentioned, Lindy McDaniel has gotten credit for a save in each of them.
- 7:29Bonson has a record of ten wins and seven losses.
- 7:33So adjusting the American League standings for what's happened,
- 7:36Baltimore remains in first place, now nine games ahead of the Detroit Tigers and nine and a half games ahead of the New York Yankees.
- 7:45Yankees remain nine and a half hours with a drop a notch down to third place.
- 8:04Dalton Jones, Mickey Stanley, and Gates Brown will be the first three batters for the Tigers.
- 8:09Jones with a batting average of 225.
- 8:11He has two homers, two doubles, and no triples.
- 8:14Jones picks up the Boston Red Sox in the offseason.
- 8:22The Yankees, of course, have to go up against tough Joe Necro.
- 8:27He picked a one-hitter against the Yankees as the Tigers swept the three-game series back the first week in July.
- 8:34It was on July the 2nd that he picked a one-hitter, Horace Clark getting the hit in the ninth inning.
- 8:46Horace got his hit with one out of the ninth inning that night to spoil Necro's no-hitter.
- 8:51And it was the third time in a month that Horace had done that, spoiled a no-hitter in the ninth inning.
- 8:57The other two times were against Jim Rooker of Kansas City on June 4th and Sonny Stuped of Boston on June the 19th.
- 9:06Necro had one other start against the Yankees this year.
- 9:09On May 27th, he was a losing player.
- 9:11He gave up four runs, three of which were earned in the three and a third inning.
- 9:15Yankees winning that one by a score of four to two.
- 9:18I, John Jones, stepped in. Jones batting 225.
- 9:25Tigers won the first one two to one. So Kenny the winner and Donald Myers the loser.
- 9:31Boston into the windup. The first pitch of the second game was swung on on this strike one.
- 9:44Boston into the windup. The next pitch to Jones. Fastball locked deep to right field.
- 9:48This one way back. Clifford going back. Going way back and the ball is in the bleachers for a home run.
- 9:57John Jones has led off the game with a home run into the right field bleachers.
- 10:03A long line drive shot. Clifford started back, then gave up.
- 10:08He would go back and play the ball off the scoreboard and could miss going into the bleachers.
- 10:13He really couldn't catch it, but the ball just hit clear of the bleachers fence and goes in for a home run.
- 10:18The third home run of the season for Jones.
- 10:22Mickey Stanley will be the batter. Stanley with a batting average of 268.
- 10:27Ten homers, five triples and twelve doubles.
- 10:30Boston delivers. Fastball in there for the called strike. No balls in one strike.
- 10:36I tell you that John Jones has always given promise of being an outstanding hitter in the major league.
- 10:42He hits a lot like that in batting practice and every now and then he connected a ball game.
- 10:46A good line drive hitter. The pitch is low and it's one and one.
- 10:50Tigers won on the Yankees nothing. We're on the top half of the first inning of the night.
- 10:54After the Tigers won the opener two to one.
- 11:01Boston winds up delivers. Curveball hitting the half hour. Out of play. First base side. One ball and two strikes.
- 11:30Dan Bonson taking plenty of time. Gets the sign.
- 11:34The one two pitch of Mickey Stanley. Check swing. It's low and outside for a ball and it's two and two.
- 11:39Two balls and two strikes.
- 11:51One to nothing. The Tigers lead it.
- 11:53Bonson winds. Here it comes. Low in the dirt. It hit about a yard and a half in front of the plate. Three balls and two strikes.
- 12:01With Dan Bonson having a bit of a problem here on the top half of the first inning.
- 12:05Counts three balls and two strikes for Mickey Stanley.
- 12:14Yankee infield as Pete Watered first. Thomas Clark at second.
- 12:19Michael to shortstop. Jerry Kenny at third. In the outfield it's Roy White, Bobby Mercer and Kurt Fluffery.
- 12:25Three balls and two strikes for Mickey Stanley.
- 12:28Tigers beginning a long road trip. The wind up. The full count check. Swung on and fouled at home plate. The count holds three and two.
- 12:42Three balls and two strikes. Two years ago, Dan Bonson was the American League Rookie of the Year.
- 12:49He had a disappointing season last year and he bounced back this year. The full count check. Low for ball four.
- 12:56So Stanley drops on down to first base.
- 12:59And it'll bring up Gates Brown. Brown the left fielder in this ball game hitting 271. Two homers and two doubles.
- 13:13So the first two Tigers have gotten on base here in the top half of the first inning.
- 13:29The pitch to Brown is low for ball one. One ball and no strikes.
- 13:35J. Gibbs the Yankee catcher here in the second game and Stan Bonson the fifth here.
- 13:42Lifetime against the Tigers. Stan Bonson is one three and lost two.
- 13:49Bonson checks Stanley off first. Here it comes. There it goes.
- 13:52Line drive on the left fielder. White coming on. Coming on. He makes the catch. Ball to his knees. Gets up.
- 13:57Throws the ball into Gene Michael and back to first base for Mickey Stanley.
- 14:01So Gates Brown hits it on the nose but right to Roy White.
- 14:06One out. A runner on. A runner in. And Norm Cash to batter.
- 14:11Cash batting 253. 12 homers. One triple and 11 doubles.
- 14:19Cash in the first game went 0 for 3 but he had a base on ball.
- 14:24And he also had a base hit. He had a base hit in the eighth inning so he was 1 for 3 plus a walk plus an outstanding defensive play.
- 14:33Stan Bonson checks Stanley. Delivers a serve low and inside for ball one. One ball and no strikes.
- 14:41Tigers won the opener 2 to 1. They lead here by a score of 1 to nothing in the top of the first inning.
- 14:49One ball and no strikes to count to Norm Cash.
- 14:54Bonson goes for the belt. Pitch curve ball low and outside for ball two. Two balls and no strikes.
- 15:02Two and out of cash.
- 15:09Mickey Stanley with the lead off for Bonson to the belt. Here it comes.
- 15:15Low and outside. Three and all.
- 15:18Three and out of cash.
- 15:23The 3-0 delivery. Low for ball four and Cash throws the base on ball. The second walk off Bonson.
- 15:39Down to second base goes Mickey Stanley. And out of the Yankee dugouts comes Ralph House.
- 15:46House make his first appearance on the field tonight aside from bringing out the scorecards.
- 15:53Mel Stollmeyer went all the way in the opener but was a loser by a score of 2 to 1.
- 16:06Russ Nagelson will be the batter. He was picked up from Cleveland along with Billy Rohr in exchange for Fred Lasher and that was back on May 22nd.
- 16:13Nagelson is only hitting 147. He's had one homer and one double.
- 16:28Nagelson on the left-handed batter. First and second and one out for the Tigers. They've got a run in on Dalton Jones' home run.
- 16:34It's third of the year. As the stretch by Bonson, he delivers on the outside for ball strike one.
- 16:41Two balls and one strike. 0-1 the count on Nagelson.
- 16:53Bonson goes to the bell check. The runners both have good lead. Still checking. Now he delivers. Fast ball, low for ball and it's 1-1.
- 17:03On second base Stanley on first base catch. There's one out and a run in on Dalton Jones' home run. So is it always going to.
- 17:11Oh, that was a heartbreak of that first ball game.
- 17:15It's a shame because though Mel Stollmeyer struggled in the first four innings, he came on strong. Would have been a big win.
- 17:22The pitch is hit on the ground out to Horace Brock at second. Over to Michael for one. The relay to first. Not on time at first. Runners on first and third and two out.
- 17:34So two outs for the Tigers. Over to third base is Mickey Stanley. Dash is the race and the fourth play. And safe at first is Nagelson.
- 17:42Stanley on third. Nagelson on first. Two out and the batter is Don Wert.
- 17:59Wert batting 249. First game he was 1-4. Bonson to the bell. He delivers. Fast ball foul to the screen. Strike one. No balls and one strike.
- 18:23Tigers won. Yankees nothing. In the top of the first of the nightcap. First game to Detroit. Two to one.
- 18:34Dan Bonson checks the runners off first and third. The pitch fast ball hit in the end to short right field. Bluffrey coming on. He won't get it.
- 18:40It's in there for a base hit. End of score for Mickey Stanley. Over to third goes Nagelson. Bluffrey for the heart of Clark. Two to nothing Tigers.
- 18:51Still an RBI for Wert. That'll be his 24th of the season. The Tigers quickly off to a two to nothing lead and it brings up the catcher Jim Price.
- 19:01Price with a batting average of 197. He's only had four RBI's but he's only been up six to one time. He's had one homer and two doubles.
- 19:23Price to bat it with runners on first and third and two out. Bonson looks in to get the sign.
- 19:37Dan goes to the bell. Here's the pitch. Hit on the ground. Why the third? Kenny over can't get it. Michael has it. Third of second. Out a beautiful play by Michael.
- 19:46What a play by Gene Michael deep in the hole and he's been playing a fine shot stop at the ball game tonight after having a bit of a rough day he's out in flavor.
- 19:55However the Tigers get two runs on two hits. No errors and two men left at the end of the half inning of the night captain.
- 20:02Choice two and the Yankees coming up. Recently you may have received a new credit card through the mail. Across the top is the name ARCO. You may have noticed the name Atlantic on the card in smaller type.
- 20:17This new ARCO card is the same as the old Atlantic credit card. Your new ARCO credit card is good for all the things you get at your Atlantic service station plus some new things.
- 20:27When the Richfield and Atlantic merged to form the Atlantic Richfield Company it seemed to make sense to have one national credit card honored at thousands of service stations from coast to coast.
- 20:36The name chosen was ARCO. This new card has lots of friends. It'll pay for your rental car at Hertz or your food and lodging at any Ramada or Treadway Inn, Hyatt House Motel, Hyatt Lodge, Travel Lodge, Friendship Inn, Hemans Walker Inns, Inc. or Superior Motel.
- 20:54All these people now just have one name to remember. ARCO.
- 20:58What'd you do? Get stuck on a name Phil? A name or what?
- 21:06I can't. With my glasses I don't know what that says. It looks like P-I-R.
- 21:14Peter Perch. That's what it is.
- 21:19Pretty good name for a riddle isn't it?
- 21:21Yes it is.
- 21:22Like you picked a peck of pickled peppers can you say that?
- 21:25No I can't. I can't even say Peter Perch.
- 21:32Alright we're all set for the bottom half of the first inning.
- 21:37Two to nothing the Tigers lead the Yankees.
- 21:43Alright Clark set to lead it off. Yankees looking for a little bit of life now as they come to bat in the bottom of the first inning.
- 21:50Went down quietly in the first game two to one. Hadn't had a hit since the fourth inning of that first game.
- 21:55First pick to Horace Clark from Neekrow is outside for ball one.
- 22:00Joe Neekrow on the mound.
- 22:03And he well remembers Horace Clark. He got the only hit off him and it came in the ninth inning out of Tiger Stadium.
- 22:12The wind up and the pitch. Low for a ball.
- 22:16Two balls and no strikes.
- 22:24Tigers leading two to nothing in the first inning of the second game. Two balls and no strikes to Horace Clark.
- 22:30Neekrow into the wind up and the pitch. Clark swings and a high ball and more chop. First base side going foul and picked up by Neekrow.
- 22:38Two and one the count to Clark.
- 22:45Tigers won their first game of the Yankee Stadium season in the opener after the Yankees won the only two game play.
- 22:52Way back in the beginning of the season.
- 22:56Then we lost the double header to the rain.
- 22:59That was back on, let's see was it in May? Yes it was. May 17.
- 23:06Two balls and one strike to count to Horace Clark.
- 23:10So the Yankees have to win this to get back in the second play.
- 23:14The wind up and the pitch to Clark. Swing and a little bounce. First base side Neekrow off the bat.
- 23:19We'll have to hurry the throw out of first.
- 23:22Nice play by Neekrow and there's one out.
- 23:26So Horace Clark bounces out on a two and one. That's going to bring up Jake Gibbs the Yankee catcher.
- 23:31Gibbs batting 254. Three homers, one triple and three doubles.
- 23:36And so is it. It had some light. Does it still look like Peter Perch?
- 23:40Now it does. Yes, Peter Perch. There it is P-I-R-S-E-A.
- 23:45You know I thought it was a joke when Bill came but that name is quite a name there.
- 23:49The Frivolous Sound Volunteers from Poughkeepsie.
- 23:53Peter Perch from Poughkeepsie.
- 23:57Oh wait no it's not. Peter Perch is in there. The fire truck is named Peter Perch.
- 24:01Oh the pitch is low for ball one. One ball and no strike.
- 24:04No not the pitch is low. Peter Perch.
- 24:09One ball and no strike to Jake Gibbs.
- 24:13Bottom half of the first inning. Tigers leading 2-0.
- 24:17The lineup by Neekrow. Here it comes. It's low and it's two balls and no strike.
- 24:21The fire truck had to be named after somebody didn't it?
- 24:24I think you have to Peter Perch Bob.
- 24:29Bill's going to be a bastard. I thought the next time he gets that one to read.
- 24:33I want to see Frank Messer. Frank hasn't been yet.
- 24:36He's going to have to flip that one to him one of these innings. Two balls and no strike.
- 24:40The windup and the pitch. In there for the called strike.
- 24:44You know we had those other ones for so long that you could almost do them from memory.
- 24:48That's right that's what I thought this was. I picked it up nonchalantly and oh and I started.
- 24:52Forget it.
- 24:56Two and one the count to Gibbs. The windup and Neekrow's pitch. Popped foul onto the screen.
- 25:00It's two and two.
- 25:05Tigers won the opener two to one. They lead here two to nothing in the bottom half of the first inning.
- 25:09Two balls two strikes and Jake Gibbs was one out.
- 25:21Neekrow into the lineup. The two two pitch curveball line in the left field for a very pitch.
- 25:26Jake just dribbled that one right over third base.
- 25:29The windup by Gates Brown. He throws it in the second on the fly and Jake Gibbs helps him back to first.
- 25:35Jake Gibbs with a line drive base hit. The first Yankee hit of the second game.
- 25:39That first hit was the fourth inning of the opener.
- 25:43And Bobby Messer steps in.
- 25:47Bobby batting two forty seven.
- 25:51Bobby in the first game and 0 for 3 also had a base on ball.
- 25:55So Bobby gets to see a right handed pitcher for the first time in a while.
- 25:59He saw Sam Mcdowell last night and Mike Joe Kenny in the first game.
- 26:03The stretch and the pitch Bobby takes outside the ball one.
- 26:07One ball and no strikes.
- 26:11Cleveland beat Baltimore four to nothing in the first game of the S.Y. Niner.
- 26:15Here the Tigers beat the
- 26:16Yankees two to one. 1 and 0 to Bobby Messer.
- 26:26There's the stretch and the pitch.
- 26:28Messer takes outside the ball two. Two balls and no strikes.
- 26:46Jake Gibbs with the lead off first. One out.
- 26:50Bottom half of the first inning.
- 26:52The stretch. Here it comes in half of the called strike.
- 26:56Just above the knees. He didn't give Messer a fat pitch to an hour but he got it over.
- 27:00Two balls and one strike.
- 27:07Nick Lowe overall has a record of ten wins and nine losses.
- 27:11One and one against the Yankees and that's his lifetime mark.
- 27:18The two on pitch on its way fouls back to the screen.
- 27:22It's all even at two balls and two strikes.
- 27:31Joe Niekro last year was with the Codes and the San Diego Padres.
- 27:36He was traded to the Tigers but put your Pat Dowdson and infielder Dave Campbell.
- 27:40And he's done the job.
- 27:42Last year he was eight and eighteen in the National League.
- 27:46Yeah before that he had a good mark of fourteen and ten.
- 27:49The two to a pitch versus swing pops it up foul.
- 27:52It will be out of play down the left field line.
- 27:54Ball coming back and into the upper deck.
- 28:00Uh oh here comes the Kurt Bluffery sign out of the upper deck.
- 28:04And a huge sign out there for Kurt Bluffery.
- 28:08And it just broke loose and it's hanging out of the upper deck.
- 28:12That has got to be one of the biggest signs I've ever seen.
- 28:19There's something about Kurt Bluffery.
- 28:23Two balls two strikes the stretch and the pitch.
- 28:25Low for ball three and it's three and two.
- 28:31Half of the sign is now on the screen and the other half is hanging down.
- 28:35I hope it's not in front of the TV camera so you won't be able to see anything.
- 28:41They're pulling it back up from up above.
- 28:45Anybody behind that you couldn't see it was through the ball game.
- 28:48Three balls and two strikes.
- 28:50Gibbs off first with one out.
- 28:52Throw to first Gibbs gets back.
- 29:01As the stretch.
- 29:04Throw to first no dice.
- 29:06Now Bobby Mercer goes for a walk outside the batter's box.
- 29:09Tigers the opener two to one.
- 29:11This one may lead two to nothing in the bottom of the first inning.
- 29:15Three and two to Mercer.
- 29:17Gibbs on it first with one out.
- 29:19Throw right on deck.
- 29:22Here's the stretch.
- 29:24There goes Gibbs the pitch outside the ball for.
- 29:27So J. Ken take it easy.
- 29:29Goes in the second base standing as Bobby Mercer draws the base on ball.
- 29:34Roy White will be the batter.
- 29:41It's been a long time since he's been below the 300 mark but he is right now.
- 29:45Roy batting 298.
- 29:4713 homers.
- 29:48Three triples and 23 doubles.
- 30:00The Yankees have gone down first and second.
- 30:02One out bottom half of the first inning.
- 30:09Roy was 0-4 in the first game but he gave it the big bid on a long flight of rights.
- 30:13It almost tied it up.
- 30:15In the sixth inning K-line made a fine catch on it.
- 30:18The first pitch to Roy.
- 30:19Curved ball in there after the call.
- 30:21Strike one.
- 30:22No balls and one strike.
- 30:26Last time Roy White was below the 300 block was on April the 12th.
- 30:30This is the fourth game of the season.
- 30:34No balls and one strike.
- 30:37Bill Kane with all of statistics never thought he'd have that one.
- 30:41The stretch and the pitch.
- 30:43Low for a ball and it's one and one.
- 30:47Jake Gibbs on second.
- 30:49Bobby Mercer on first.
- 30:50One out bottom half of the first inning.
- 30:52Two to nothing Tigers after they won the opener two to one.
- 31:05The pitch to White.
- 31:06Curve is low and two balls and one strike.
- 31:10On deck is Pete Ward.
- 31:13Now Jim Price walks the ball halfway out to the mound and then flips it to Niko.
- 31:22Two and one the counter Roy White.
- 31:24Yankees trying to get even here in the bottom of the first inning and get even in the second game.
- 31:35Gibbs with a good lead off second.
- 31:37Mercer off to off first.
- 31:39Two and one the counter White.
- 31:40Here's the pitch.
- 31:41A long drive at the right field.
- 31:43This one is high for and down home run.
- 32:12Well that puts Roy White back to the 300 mark mighty fast.
- 32:20Bounding average back to 300 and home run number 14 and you now have 66 RBI.
- 32:26And the Yankees lead it three to two.
- 32:31Here's Pete Ward.
- 32:34A pitch to Pete is outside for ball one.
- 32:37Ward is batting 250.
- 32:39And last night he laid down a beautiful bunt in the ball game at Cleveland that hit third base.
- 32:45Three to two Yankees and we've had more scoring in the first inning than we had in the entire first game.
- 32:51The Tigers winning that two to one.
- 32:53The 1-0 pitch.
- 32:55High and two balls and another strike.
- 33:01Two and 0 the count to Pete Ward.
- 33:07So Necro got hard to block but then he gave up a single to give.
- 33:11A walk to Mercer and a home run to Roy White.
- 33:15Two balls and no strikes to Pete Ward.
- 33:19A wind up.
- 33:20Here it comes inside of three balls and no strikes.
- 33:26So Necro pitched a one hitter against the Yankees the last time.
- 33:31Having his troubles in the first inning this time.
- 33:34Three and 0 the count, the wind up and the pitch.
- 33:37On the corner for the called strike.
- 33:39Got the outside corner.
- 33:41Three balls and one strike to Pete Ward.
- 33:53The wind up.
- 33:54Here it comes outside for ball four and Pete Ward draws the base on ball.
- 33:59And here comes Mayo Smith out of the Tigers dugout.
- 34:03So in the first game neither manager had a come out and talk to the pitchers.
- 34:07And here in the second game we've seen both managers here in the first inning.
- 34:14This game has had a little more excitement already than the first game Phil.
- 34:18You know it's a strange thing Bob.
- 34:20Very seldom do you get two well pitched games in a double header.
- 34:25The first game the pitching dominated when young Mike Kilkenny
- 34:30bested Mel Sattelmeyer in a real pitches duel two to one.
- 34:35And then always it seems in the second game for some reason or other it's a slugfest.
- 34:40And as you say we've already scored many more runs in this game than we scored in the whole first game.
- 34:47And I'm not sure whether he's taking them out or not.
- 34:49It doesn't look like it.
- 34:51All right don't let him stay in there.
- 34:54All right.
- 34:56Mayo Smith a little upset he was pitching his belt up.
- 35:00This is a battle for second place.
- 35:02Yankees got to win this to regain it.
- 35:05And Kurt Bluffrey will be the batter.
- 35:08Run it on first one out three runs in for the Yankees.
- 35:11And they lead three to two in the bottom half of the first inning.
- 35:17Pete Warnard first with one out and Bluffrey steps in.
- 35:24Bluffrey batting two 14.
- 35:26Nicrow to the belt.
- 35:28The pitch to Kurt low for ball one.
- 35:30One ball and no strikes.
- 35:37One and over count on Bluffrey.
- 35:40Tigers the opener two to one.
- 35:41Yankees lead here three to two but we're only in the first inning.
- 35:45One ball and no strikes the count to Bluffrey.
- 35:47Nicrow with a stretch Ward dancing away the pitch.
- 35:51Hit in the air deep to right center field barely going back.
- 35:54Turns under it and he makes the catch.
- 35:57Lobs it in the second base.
- 35:59Bluffrey got good wood on but he hit it to right center field.
- 36:03And there are two outs.
- 36:07Two outs for the Yankees.
- 36:08He will be back to first base.
- 36:10And Jerry Kenney will be getting his first pass out of the evening.
- 36:12Kenney with a batting average of two oh seven.
- 36:14He's not playing the first game.
- 36:17Yankees leading it three to two.
- 36:20Here in the first inning we had a lead off home run by Dalton Jones for the Tigers.
- 36:25And a free run shot by Roy White of the Yankees.
- 36:36The stretch.
- 36:37A first pitch to Kenney.
- 36:39Low for ball one.
- 36:40One ball and no strikes.
- 36:44Jerry batting two oh seven.
- 36:52And Silveruzudo has a lavender flower to go with his lavender pen.
- 36:58All right Robyn.
- 36:59The pitch fouled off.
- 37:00Coming back towards the press box and back on the screen.
- 37:03One ball and one strike.
- 37:04Where did you have to get that?
- 37:06Well that's really not mine.
- 37:07I think somebody gave it a Frank Metzger.
- 37:11Somebody's in love with him.
- 37:15One ball and one strike.
- 37:21Yankees three and the Tigers two.
- 37:23Bottom of the first.
- 37:24Tigers won the opener two to one.
- 37:26Here's the stretch.
- 37:28The pitch.
- 37:29Kenney takes.
- 37:30Strike called on a curve ball.
- 37:32It's one ball and two strikes.
- 37:36It's been a long first inning of the nightcap.
- 37:39It held up the second game until about eight o'clock.
- 37:44First game was over about seven twenty five.
- 37:46One ball and two strikes.
- 37:48The lead by Ward.
- 37:49The pitch to Kenney.
- 37:50Plung on and fouled.
- 37:51Back just below the press box.
- 37:53It onto the screen again.
- 38:09One into the count.
- 38:10Here's the stretch.
- 38:12The pitch to Kenny.
- 38:13Flow curve is high and it's two and two.
- 38:16Two balls and two strikes.
- 38:19Baltimore scored three runs in the top half of the second inning at Cleveland.
- 38:25That's Harden against Dunning.
- 38:26The Indians won the first one quarter nothing.
- 38:33The stretch and the pitch inside for a ball.
- 38:37Three balls and two strikes to Jerry Kenny.
- 38:39He wore it on the first with two outs and the Yankees leading at three to two.
- 38:52Three into the count.
- 38:53Ward will be off and running.
- 38:54There he goes.
- 38:55The pitch is.
- 38:56Strike three called and the side's retired.
- 38:58And Kenny didn't like the call.
- 39:00He said so to John Rice.
- 39:01The whole play down by Jerry has fouled out on strike.
- 39:04But the Yankees get three runs on two hits.
- 39:07There were no errors and a man lost and Kenny is still drawing away with Rice.
- 39:12Now Dick Hauser comes down and steps right in between them.
- 39:16And leaves Jerry Kenny by the hand back to the dugout.
- 39:20The score at the end of one.
- 39:22The Yankees three and the Tigers two.
- 39:24Right now Chevrolet dealers are back on Chevrolet's savings time.
- 39:28Before we go along any further right now let's pause for station identification.
- 39:33This is Harry Downey bringing the Upside Downey game your way weekdays 10 to 3 here on the Fresh Air Sound of Radio 81 WGY's Connected E.
- 39:45All right both Bonson and Negros have been treated rather roughly in the first inning.
- 39:49So let's see as they go back and take their rest whether things will be different Bob.
- 39:53All right on we go to the top half of the second inning Yankees leading at three to two.
- 39:57Gutierrez, Necro and Dalton Jones will be the batter.
- 40:03Bonson into his wind up.
- 40:04Atmopet outside with the curve ball for ball one and Jerry Kenny was racing in from third as Gutierrez fluffed the bunt.
- 40:11One ball and no strike.
- 40:15Yankees three and the Tigers two but the Tigers won the opener two to one.
- 40:24The pitch is hit in the air out towards right field.
- 40:27Bluffery in his track backing up a little bit.
- 40:29Catches it head high and there's one out.
- 40:33Gutierrez flies out to right field for the first out of the top of the second.
- 40:37It will bring out Joe Necro the pitcher.
- 40:40Necro is batting 149.
- 40:43He's had seven base hits and 47 at bats and one of the hits was for a triple.
- 40:48Two of them for a double.
- 40:53One out top of the second Yankees leading three to two after the Tigers won the opener two to one.
- 41:03Each team has had two hits.
- 41:05Bonson one, kick delivers.
- 41:07Swing and a mid-strike run.
- 41:08Necro flung over that one.
- 41:10No balls and one strike.
- 41:20Bonson into the wind up.
- 41:21Delivers again.
- 41:23Necro takes high for a ball that's one and one.
- 41:25One ball and one strike.
- 41:36The one-one pitch hit on the ground back to the box and in the center field for a base hit.
- 41:41Up with the ball is Bobby Mercer.
- 41:43He throws on in the second.
- 41:45And Joe Necro the pitcher comes up with a base hit of the season.
- 41:50So Necro is on and he wants his warm-up jacket.
- 41:56Tigers have a base runner with one out and Dalton Jones with his third home of the season to start off the ballgame steps in.
- 42:17First pitch to Jones is low for ball one.
- 42:20One ball and no strike.
- 42:27Necro not taking much of a lead at all.
- 42:32He's got about a one-yard lead.
- 42:34Here's the pitch.
- 42:35Low for ball two, balls and no strike.
- 42:39Yankees three and the Tigers two, top half of the second inning.
- 42:54Necro leads off the 2-0 pitch.
- 42:56Outside three balls and no strike.
- 43:00Bonson walks a couple in the first inning now in danger of his third walk of the ballgame.
- 43:05Stanley is on deck.
- 43:09The little consolation to face the Tigers without K-line on the batting auto though.
- 43:15He's being rested in this nightcap.
- 43:17The pitch is over for a called strike three and one.
- 43:22But I'd imagine he could be a pretty good threat as a pinch hitter later on in the ballgame.
- 43:27Three balls and one strike to Dalton Jones.
- 43:33Stan Bonson checks Necro.
- 43:35Here it comes, low for ball four and Jones draws the base on ball.
- 43:39That's the third one giving up by Stan Bonson in an inning and a third.
- 43:43And it'll bring out Mickey Stanley who drew the first walk off bounce.
- 43:46But it came in the three and two pitch of the first inning.
- 43:52So with one out here in the second inning, Necro has walked.
- 43:55Jones has walked after Necro's single.
- 43:59First and second with one out and Mickey Stanley the batter.
- 44:24Mickey Stanley steps in.
- 44:28Necro on it, second, Jones on it.
- 44:30First and now Stanley steps out as Bonson is taking too long for him.
- 44:34Stanley batting 268.
- 44:38Mickey's hit ten home runs.
- 44:40He had a good first game.
- 44:41He had a double and a triple and scored both Tiger runs.
- 44:44Bonson to the belt.
- 44:45The pitch curve low in the dirt football.
- 44:47One nice walk by Jake Gibbs.
- 44:49One ball and no strikes and now we have some activity out in the Yankee bullpen.
- 44:57The manager went to the bullpen in the first game.
- 45:08Both managers have had the bullpen up already in this one.
- 45:11Bonson stretches and the pitch curve in the half of the call strikes.
- 45:14That was a beauty.
- 45:15One ball and one strike.
- 45:18Yankees leading 3-2 after the Tigers won the opener 2-1.
- 45:34The pitch is low for a ball, 2-1.
- 45:42Whatever breeze we have here at the stadium right now blowing out towards left field.
- 45:46Very comfortable night for baseball.
- 45:50Looks as if the good weather followed us right along.
- 45:53We had a pleasant after the first day in Milwaukee.
- 45:57Certainly nights in Cleveland and now nights here in New York.
- 45:59The 2-1 pitch is inside the 3-1.
- 46:03That's play jumping around on Stan Bonson.
- 46:06Three balls and one strike.
- 46:11Check is Gabe Brown.
- 46:19Mickey Stanley the center fielder up there.
- 46:213-1 Bonson stretches.
- 46:23The pitch hit on the ground.
- 46:24Back over Bonson.
- 46:25Gloves in the center field for a base hit.
- 46:27Mitchell around third.
- 46:28He'll score.
- 46:29Going on to third base is Jones.
- 46:31The throw cut off by Ward.
- 46:33And their runners on first and third in the tie ball game.
- 46:37Stan Bonson just missed that ball.
- 46:39It was well hit up the middle but he almost slagged it down.
- 46:42Went right over his glove and kept right on going in the center field.
- 46:46And Routhouse is out of the Yankee dugout.
- 46:51This is his second time out.
- 46:55But not the second time in this inning.
- 46:57But he's going to make the change anyhow and he wants the left-hander.
- 47:04So Mickey Stanley has single to tie up the ball game.
- 47:09Jones is on third.
- 47:10Stanley on first with one out.
- 47:13And this is Steve Hamilton.
- 47:15And this is quite early for Steve Hamilton in the ball game.
- 47:19I think right now with two left-hander's it is actually three in a row.
- 47:24Schedule of that.
- 47:25Ralph Hough wants to get out of this inning.
- 47:27And Steve, as everyone knows, is a short relief man.
- 47:31And what Ralph will probably do, get out of this jam, or hope to get out of this jam,
- 47:35and then pinch hit maybe for Steve Hamilton.
- 47:38I've often thought of the possibility of letting Hamilton, let's say,
- 47:41pitch to the left-handed batters and then putting them someplace on the field.
- 47:45And Ralph has said that he's been like tempted so often,
- 47:49but he says there's always one man out of place.
- 47:52Like he's always one lefty or one right-handed hitter away.
- 47:56I don't think you do it this early in the ball game,
- 47:58because Hamilton is so effective against the lefty that you have to think about it.
- 48:02You know something, Bob?
- 48:03I mentioned that same thing down to him when I was talking to him between games,
- 48:08interviewing him, and he said he gets a little upset when people say that,
- 48:12well, we know you can get left-handers out, but you have trouble against right-handers.
- 48:16And he said it's something that has stuck with him because he does get left-handers out so well.
- 48:21They weigh that against the way he pitches against right-handers.
- 48:24And he said if you check the records, you'll see that he does as well against right-hand hitters
- 48:29as other pitchers, not as well as he does against left-hand batters naturally,
- 48:33but he's so great getting them out.
- 48:35But he just gets a little upset when they say, well, you can't get right-handers out.
- 48:39Well, he's been getting them out and getting them out well all year,
- 48:42but as you say, he's been tremendous against the left-handers.
- 48:45Now, wait a minute.
- 48:46Gates Brown is heading back to the dugout, and we're waiting to see what happens.
- 48:52Ike Brown will be the 10th hitter, 10th hitting for Gates Brown.
- 49:02All we've got to do is change first names and leave him right in there.
- 49:08What was the all in Gates and Ike? They look alike, they swing alike?
- 49:12No, it wasn't Gates and Ike. It was Mike and Ike.
- 49:14All right.
- 49:15That's too many people with the name of Gates.
- 49:19Ike Brown will be the 10th hitter.
- 49:38So Gates Brown will be the 10th hitter.
- 49:41Boy, if we're early in the ballgame, we have a short-release pitcher and a 10th hitter.
- 49:46Some fans may be wondering about Horton.
- 49:49Willie Horton is on the disabled list.
- 49:52He was injured, I guess, when we were out in California.
- 49:56So they do not have Willie Horton, and the Yankees are happy about that.
- 49:59Not happy for Willie's sake, but he has written murder on Yankee pitching.
- 50:03Here's Gates Brown.
- 50:09Three through the score, first and third and one out, second inning, the stretch, the pitch,
- 50:14and a no-strike one.
- 50:18Gates Brown is batting 271. He has two doubles and two home runs.
- 50:32No balls and one strike.
- 50:37Hamilton goes to the ball.
- 50:39Fastball inside low, and it's one and one on Ike Brown.
- 50:43So Gates Brown only got off once, and he lined out to left field.
- 50:51Three through the score, top of the second. Tigers won the opener two to one.
- 51:04The pitch, hung on, hit on the ground, play down the first base line, the players to the plate, and safe at home.
- 51:11Nate Ward was slow getting rid of that ball. Seemed to hesitate for just a second.
- 51:16There was no slide at home plate.
- 51:20He seemed to hesitate, Phil.
- 51:22He didn't think he had a chance for the runner at home, and then was surprised to see him so far from the plate.
- 51:27And that slight hesitation caused the Yankees to run.
- 51:31Now they trail four to three. That'll be a field of choice.
- 51:36They're field of choice, and they give Ike Brown an RBI.
- 51:41Dalton Jones scored from third.
- 51:44Down the second goes Mickey Stanley, and Ike Brown is safe at first.
- 51:47Now the left-handed batter is Norm Cash.
- 51:50Little Gribbler down the first base line.
- 51:52Here's the pitch. Here's the demand for the called strike one. No balls and one strike.
- 51:59So the Tigers lead four to three in the top half of the second inning.
- 52:03No balls and one strike.
- 52:08Hamilton to the belt delivers the curve outside for a ball that's one and one.
- 52:14Steve Hamilton with a record of four wins and three losses, and earned run average of 2.25.
- 52:20Tigers four, Yankees three, top half of the second inning.
- 52:24There's the stretch and the pitch.
- 52:27Two balls and one strike.
- 52:33Tigers won the opener two to one.
- 52:36We've had wild scoring in this one.
- 52:38Tigers got two in the first, Yankees three in the bottom of the first.
- 52:41Tigers two here in the top of the second, and they're still at it.
- 52:44First and second, one out.
- 52:46Pulling on McCann on cash.
- 52:51There's the stretch and the pitch. Pulling a miss, and it's still in two.
- 52:56Two balls and two strikes.
- 52:59And that play to the plate, Jones never did bother to slide, and they almost had them after all, even after the hesitation.
- 53:06I think that Jake could have really given him a dirty play there, given him a hit, and he'd have been up in the seat.
- 53:11Two to five is low for ball three.
- 53:14Three and two to count.
- 53:17Ross Nagelson is on deck.
- 53:22Three balls, two strikes. We'll see if the runners are going.
- 53:26Stanley and Eichbaum.
- 53:32There's the stretch.
- 53:34They're not going to pitch. Hit on the ground slowly, foul outside of first.
- 53:38McCann holds a three and two.
- 53:51Three balls and two strikes to non-cash.
- 54:05Cash walks his first time up with stretch and the pitch.
- 54:08Swing and a foul ball back to the screen and hold a three and two.
- 54:13He bounced that one back and just didn't get a piece of it.
- 54:15Three balls and two strikes.
- 54:18It's funny, we were talking about Hamilton in the right-hand batters.
- 54:21Well, he fooled Eichbaum so badly that it turned out he fooled him too much.
- 54:25He hit it off the end of the bat and it was hit so slowly to run score.
- 54:28It doesn't show on the box scores, but Steve did his job.
- 54:31He's just got a bad break.
- 54:35There's the stretch and the pitch. Low for ball four.
- 54:38So cash draws the base on balls.
- 54:42And the bases are loaded with one out.
- 54:45Thank you Stanley goes to third. Eichbaum goes to second.
- 54:48Non-cash goes to first.
- 54:51And the battle will be Russ Nagleton.
- 54:53Nagleton grounded to a fourth play his first time up by hitting a ground ball to Harrah Scott.
- 55:01Nagleton came in only batting 147.
- 55:04So another lefty for Steve Hamilton to face.
- 55:08But after this he runs out of lefties with John Wirtz together.
- 55:12The wind up in the pitch. High for ball one.
- 55:15One ball and no strike.
- 55:27Tigers have them loaded. Here's the pitch.
- 55:29Bring in a high pop out. Maybe playable.
- 55:31Coming back is Gibbs. It's going to be close.
- 55:33Right to the screen. Can't get it on the screen.
- 55:39One and one. Jacobs ready to climb the screen for that one.
- 55:42What a spot for a pop out. The bases loaded.
- 55:47But it was back on the screen. One ball and one strike.
- 55:56Yankee outfield of second game.
- 55:59Roy White, Bobby Mercer, and Tate Leffler.
- 56:01And they're pulled way around for Russ Nagleton.
- 56:05Tigers have the bases loaded. They lead 4-3 in the second inning of the nightcap.
- 56:09They won the opener 2-1.
- 56:12One ball, one strike, one out. Hamilton the wind up and the pitch.
- 56:15First strike to a beauty. One ball and two strikes.
- 56:22Now a new supply of baseball.
- 56:24Brought out to plate umpire John Rice.
- 56:26Rice is the home plate umpire.
- 56:28Marty Spring started first. Larry Barnett at second and Larry Knapp around at third.
- 56:39Strike three swinging and Hamilton gets a big strike out.
- 56:44So he strikes out Nagleton after walking Chad.
- 56:49Two outs for the Tigers and John Way will be the batter.
- 56:53And it looks as if Hamilton will stay on the mound to pitch to Wirt.
- 56:59Tigers leading 4-3 top half of the second inning.
- 57:06John Wirt got a base hit to drive it around in the first inning.
- 57:12Hamilton delivers low for ball one. One ball and no strike.
- 57:16So this is the second right-handed batter that he's had to face.
- 57:20The other one being Ike Brown.
- 57:27Pitch is hitting the edge. Deep to left. Right going back.
- 57:30Back to the warning card. To the front. He's got it.
- 57:33And that and many ball parkers are grand plan homo.
- 57:39But it's a big out for the Tigers to the top half of the second inning.
- 57:44They regain the lead. As they scored two runs they had two hits.
- 57:47There were no errors in three left.
- 57:49At the end of the inning and a half the Tigers four and the Yankees three.
- 57:54There's leeching and bird for everyone at the Catskill Game Farm.
- 58:04See all the game both wild and tame at the Catskill Game Farm.
- 58:11You'll enjoy seeing the rare imported antelope in the new African exhibit.
- 58:16Besides petting and feeding the many animals at the game farm,
- 58:20you may go for a train ride in the colorful bird area
- 58:23where there is a large modern cafeteria serving delicious hot and cold meals.
- 58:29If you're nature minded, don't miss the wildlife art gallery with many beautiful animal paintings.
- 58:35There are so many enjoyable things to see at the Catskill Game Farm.
- 58:39Be sure to visit it some day this week.
- 58:42It's located two miles off Route 32 south of K.O. New York.
- 58:47See all the game both wild and tame at the Catskill Game Farm.
- 59:03Well it looks like that Ike Brown is going to stay in left field Bob.
- 59:06So all we got to do is keep the name Ike there and leave Brown in left field.
- 59:11And Ike as far as I know, I haven't seen him in the outfield.
- 59:15I know he's played a lot of second and third base for the Tigers.
- 59:19Oh he got his chance in the outfield.
- 59:21It's also, they still have K.Line they could have put in there.
- 59:26But they're giving K.Line a rest.
- 59:27He's been in the big league for 18 years, 35 years old.
- 59:32And probably the only time we'll see him would be at a pinch hitting role
- 59:35or later on in the ball game.
- 59:37All right, Gene Michael is trying to get things going for the Yankees
- 59:41and we go to the bottom of the second.
- 59:44Four to two the Tigers lead it.
- 59:52The Traips, the win on the first game, 2-1 at Co. Kennings, bested Mel Salomar.
- 59:58The windup and the pitch, Michael takes in there for the call strike.
- 1:00:03And the Yankees have been given a reprieve after that free run home on the first inning by Roy White.
- 1:00:09No balls and run strike.
- 1:00:16The windup and the pitch, Michael with the line drive to first base and cash one out.
- 1:00:23One up and one down.
- 1:00:26And it'll bring out the Yankee pitcher Steve Hamilton.
- 1:00:31A stand bounce, he never did get a chance to bat in the ball game.
- 1:00:37Hamilton has got only five outbats this year and no base yet.
- 1:00:47Four to three the Tigers lead it, bottom half of the second inning.
- 1:00:54Big thief, the left-handed batter, the putscher Nick Lowe in there for the call strike.
- 1:01:00Hamilton thought it was below his knee, he's got some pretty tall knees.
- 1:01:04Used to be a basketball player for the old Minneapolis Lakers.
- 1:01:08No balls and one strike.
- 1:01:10The windup and the pitch, swing and a broken bat off.
- 1:01:14Back to Nick Lowe who made the play, the throw to first for the second out.
- 1:01:18He got that one backhanded between his legs.
- 1:01:21Absolutely, oh we've got to get a replay on that on TV, that was beautiful.
- 1:01:27It was a broken bat by Hamilton, the ball went back to the mound.
- 1:01:31And somehow Nick Lowe had his legs all tangled up, the ball went right between his legs.
- 1:01:36And he was cross-legged at the time, shut down the glove and had the ball.
- 1:01:41Two outs.
- 1:01:44Bill's still looking for his replay.
- 1:01:48Hanson Harv, Clark will be the batter.
- 1:01:58Harv Clark steps in.
- 1:02:01Clark bounced to the mound in the first inning.
- 1:02:04Four to three to Tigers leader, the windup.
- 1:02:07The pitch to Clark, he's taking all the way and a throw for ball one.
- 1:02:10One ball and no strike.
- 1:02:14One and 0 the count. The windup and the pitch to Clark, flung on and rocked foul outside of first.
- 1:02:22One and one.
- 1:02:30Scramble for the base ball, nobody wound up with it.
- 1:02:33One and one the count on Harv's part.
- 1:02:37Tigers leading four to three, second inning of the nightcap, they won the opener, two to one.
- 1:02:43The windup, here it comes, it's outside with two balls and one strike.
- 1:02:52Hanson Harv, Clark made out in the first inning, a single by Gibb and a walk to Mercer with three run homer by Roy White.
- 1:02:59Two and one the count.
- 1:03:02Necro goes into the windup, he delivers, low curve, high on outside, three and one the Harv's part.
- 1:03:08Jake Gibb's on deck.
- 1:03:13Big ball game for these two teams, the winner goes into second place, right now it's the Tigers by a half game over the Yankees.
- 1:03:21Three and one, the windup and the pitch, Clark takes high for ball four.
- 1:03:26So Harv shuts on down the first, it's the third walk for the Yankees and he'll bring up Jake Gibb.
- 1:03:34Gibb's going to base hit the left field to get the Yankees going in the first inning.
- 1:03:41Jake will fail to hit a home run last year, has hit three home runs this year, he also has one triple and three doubles.
- 1:03:58The stretch by Necro, go to first and Harv's clock gets back.
- 1:04:11Necro fires the first, no dice.
- 1:04:15Harv's back with the belly-whopper.
- 1:04:20Harv's tucked off, Necro's stepped off.
- 1:04:24Clark's back with his big lead, Necro to the belt.
- 1:04:29Great pitch to Jake Gibb, fastball accidentally hit foul outside of first strike one.
- 1:04:34No balls in one strike, Jake was trying to check his swing on that.
- 1:04:38Oh and one the count to Gibb.
- 1:04:41Gibb will be doing a lot of catching for the Yankees for the next two weeks, months of the Labas military reserve duties.
- 1:04:48Oh and one the count on Jake.
- 1:04:59Four to three, the Tigers lead it, we're on the bottom half of the second inning.
- 1:05:07The lead by Clark, a throw over there and Harv's inside.
- 1:05:14Harv's has 12-goal invasions, two outs, he's got a big lead, another throw, he gets back.
- 1:05:31It's going to be a long night cap, played about an hour, but it's been a lot of excitement.
- 1:05:37Four to three, the Tigers lead it, to the belt goes Necro, the pitch.
- 1:05:41It's a long drive, it's a home run if it's fair, there's serving foul way back into the upper deck.
- 1:05:50No balls and two strikes.
- 1:05:58Mayo's going for a drink of water over in the Tiger dugout. Oh and two the count on Gibb.
- 1:06:12Harv's Clark on his first, two outs, the stretch, the pitch to Jake.
- 1:06:17Line drive, hits down in the left field corner for the base hit, Clark around second, digging for third.
- 1:06:22Down up at the ball in the corner, Clark the third, they hold him up.
- 1:06:27Jake's play by Ike Brown who went in to play left field, a hole after a double.
- 1:06:32Not so much to keep Gibb's second, but the stops are very three-footed, Harv's Clark from scoring.
- 1:06:38Jake just reached out and bumped that ball down the left of your line, middle playing them over that way.
- 1:06:43So actually Ike Brown had a head start on the ball.
- 1:06:46They did not as a rule play Gibb's as a full hitter.
- 1:06:49There was a case where Gibb did pull the ball into the upper deck and then he hit one the opposite way.
- 1:06:54So it's a stroke to have. A lot of pitches will hang one inside, see them pull a pitch outside.
- 1:07:00Might pull some hitters, but Jake is as good going to left field as any left-hand hitter on the Yankees.
- 1:07:09So the Yankees have a life here on the second and it was two outs, a walk for Clark, a double by Jake.
- 1:07:15And here comes Mayo Smith out of the dugout.
- 1:07:19He went for a long drink of water after Gibb hit that long foul.
- 1:07:28Mayo is in no hurry to get out to the mound.
- 1:07:32Nickra has been hit well to three-base hit.
- 1:07:36Home run, a double and a single and that's all. He's had it.
- 1:07:40So Jake Gibb's got two out of the three hits off Nickra and he loses the ball game, but the Tigers leading it four to three.
- 1:07:48Right now on Yankee Bay, ball is called for station identification.
- 1:07:52This is Steve Fitz, your contact host. Call us weeknights from eight to midnight.
- 1:07:56Hear on the fresh air sound of Radio 81, WGY Schenectady.
- 1:08:09Looks like we're going to have a left-hander coming on, which will not be anything new for Bobby Mercer,
- 1:08:15who will be the scheduled batter to face the new pitcher coming on.
- 1:08:20Bobby's getting more than his share of left-hand pitches about against this year.
- 1:08:25Well, let's see, it looks like it could be Hiller. It's hard to see.
- 1:08:34Let's see, Longfin sideburns. Does that help, Bill Cain?
- 1:08:39Number 18, John Hiller. Very good.
- 1:08:43Got to be lucky once in a while, Bob.
- 1:08:45But anyway, Hiller is not the type left-hand pitcher to give left-hand batters that much trouble.
- 1:08:53In other words, he doesn't come that side on like Steve Hamillin does.
- 1:08:57Hiller is making his 31st appearance of the year and he has won five and lost three.
- 1:09:03He actually started one game for the Tigers this year. All the rest have been in relief.
- 1:09:09Has an earned run average of 3.06. Not bad, not good.
- 1:09:15Not good enough to keep you in there.
- 1:09:19He'll get his warm-up pitches and then have to face Bobby Mercer.
- 1:09:24And as we said, Bobby, really facing his share of left-hand hitters.
- 1:09:29Let's see what Bobby did in the first game.
- 1:09:32He was 0-3 and had one walk while he was in there.
- 1:09:39So as Bob said, it's going to be a wild and molly ball game after that first one.
- 1:09:43A fine pitching goal between Mike Kilkenny, who the young left-hander was the winner against Mel Saddelmeyer.
- 1:09:51And now this one, already 4-3. We're in the bottom of the second two-out.
- 1:09:55But the Yankees threatening with Jake Gibbs' second and Horace Clark at third.
- 1:10:00And Bobby Mercer the batter.
- 1:10:05Meanwhile, as we told you in that first game out at Cleveland,
- 1:10:10the Indians behind Dean Chance shut out Baltimore, but in the second game,
- 1:10:13Baltimore scored three times.
- 1:10:15And at the end of two innings, they lead Cleveland 3-0 in that second game.
- 1:10:21We'll give you all the scores of all the other games at the end of the third inning.
- 1:10:27Right now, Mercer ready, the Tigers ready, and so is our Bob Gammier.
- 1:10:31All right, so Bobby Mercer steps in. First base is open.
- 1:10:35Gibbs is on second. Horace Clark is on third.
- 1:10:39Tigers leading at 4-3 after winning the opener 3-1.
- 1:10:47Here's the windup. The first pitch to Mercer is low for ball one.
- 1:10:51Might have been a little outside. One ball and no strike.
- 1:10:56Joe Necrow takes one and three-thirds innings.
- 1:11:00He's given up three runs to two runners of his responsibility.
- 1:11:04Only three hits. The walk's got him in trouble. He gave up three walks.
- 1:11:08One-and-oh to count, to stretch. The pitch to Bobby Mercer.
- 1:11:12Third and after the call, strike at one and one.
- 1:11:17Bobby Mercer drew a walk on a three-and-two pitch in the first inning.
- 1:11:21Four to three, Detroit leading the nightcap after winning the opener 2-1.
- 1:11:25We're only in the second inning.
- 1:11:27The stretch and the pitch. Mercer swings and Mercer strikes two.
- 1:11:31One ball and three strikes. They didn't even get close to that one.
- 1:11:35One and two to count on Mercer.
- 1:11:40Final naps. The late score. The Pirates beat the Phillies 4-0 in the first game of the double header.
- 1:11:47One ball and two strikes. That will keep the Pirates in first place.
- 1:11:51Here's the stretch. Hiller delivers Mercer takes high and a two-and-zero.
- 1:11:57Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:12:13John Hiller looks in to get the sign from Jim Price.
- 1:12:19Mercer brings it to the belt.
- 1:12:22Here's the pitch. Swinging a foul ball to the Tiger dugout.
- 1:12:25That bounces around the dugout.
- 1:12:28He never did get back out, but we could see it in two different places bouncing around.
- 1:12:32Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:12:34Now they throw it out of there.
- 1:12:39Cleveland got a run on the bottom of the third.
- 1:12:42It's Baltimore three and Cleveland one after three.
- 1:12:46Two balls, two strikes and two outs.
- 1:12:50The stretch and the pitch. Swinging a most-striked play on the side of the tire.
- 1:12:54No runs, one hit, no errors and two outs.
- 1:12:57At the end of two is the Tigers four and the Yankees three.

- 1:14:04All right, Steve Hamilton.
- 1:14:06That hand was for Austin Howard who had come out to warm up Steve Hamilton
- 1:14:10while Jake Gibbs was getting the gear on.
- 1:14:12Now Jake is back there with all the gear on.
- 1:14:15Hamilton just about ready to conclude his warm up.
- 1:14:18And he'll be pitching at the bottom fair to the order.
- 1:14:21Price, Gutierrez, and the new pitcher, John Hiller.
- 1:14:25Bob Elsel, they held up the second game of the year.
- 1:14:29The first game ended early, but they won an hour with two innings.
- 1:14:34It was exciting baseball.
- 1:14:36Yes, it was.
- 1:14:37By the time the night's over, they may be sorry that we held it up a little.
- 1:14:40All right, we got set for the top half of the third inning.
- 1:14:44Tigers leading it 4-3.
- 1:14:48And it looks as if both ball clubs are going to wind up using a lot of players before this is over.
- 1:14:54Jim Price steps in and into a fourth play to end the first inning.
- 1:14:59Outstanding player was by Gene Michael who went way over in the hole and came up with it.
- 1:15:04Steve Hamilton is the windup and the pitch.
- 1:15:06Price takes outside for ball one.
- 1:15:09Got to watch for the floater any time now.
- 1:15:11He couldn't throw the folly floater last inning because there were men on base.
- 1:15:15One ball and no strike.
- 1:15:17Hamilton winds the pitch.
- 1:15:19Curve in there for the call.
- 1:15:24Strike and it's one and one.
- 1:15:26One ball, one strike.
- 1:15:28Tigers leading 4-3 in the third inning of the night cap.
- 1:15:31They won the opener 2-1.
- 1:15:37Steve Hamilton winds the left hander.
- 1:15:39Throws the floater.
- 1:15:40Here it comes.
- 1:15:41Price swings a high pop-up ball outside of third.
- 1:15:44Penny over to the rally.
- 1:15:45He can't get it.
- 1:15:46In the space it goes.
- 1:15:47Strike.
- 1:15:49One and two.
- 1:15:57I want to tell you Price was ready to come back and Price almost hit the umpire.
- 1:16:02He went back so far.
- 1:16:03He was really leaning with that pitch all the way and he almost hit it straight up in the air.
- 1:16:08He wanted to hit it so badly.
- 1:16:12Hamilton really gets the crowd alive with that pitch.
- 1:16:15Alright, one ball, two strikes.
- 1:16:17Hamilton ends the wind up.
- 1:16:19Stopped the pop-up.
- 1:16:20Fastball, swung on and foul.
- 1:16:22And that was the folly faker.
- 1:16:25So they call that the hesitation hummer.
- 1:16:27A hesitation hummer.
- 1:16:30Well what it is is he makes believe that he's going to throw the folly floater and then just whips it in.
- 1:16:36One and two.
- 1:16:38Look at Price.
- 1:16:41Price is going to get the pine car.
- 1:16:45One ball and two strikes on him.
- 1:16:49Price the first man up here in the third inning.
- 1:16:52Four to three.
- 1:16:53The Tigers lead the Yankees.
- 1:16:57Hamilton made out he was going to throw that blooper kick.
- 1:17:00You know people who haven't been following Yankee baseball, we've got to always explain it so they don't think we're crazy.
- 1:17:06What did do?
- 1:17:07Here's the wind up.
- 1:17:09Regular curveball lined over second for a base hit in the center field.
- 1:17:14So Jim Price gets a base hit.
- 1:17:17As Hamilton explained it's great on that one and a wind up a line drive base hit.
- 1:17:22He got foul balls on the folly floater and the hesitation hummer.
- 1:17:29And then he just tried a regular curveball and Price got a base hit.
- 1:17:33Here seems a goodie arrow to fly it out to right field the first time up.
- 1:17:38Fans of course would love to see Hamilton stay in there and do well.
- 1:17:42If they get a chance maybe to see it next inning again.
- 1:17:45The pitch to goodie arrows.
- 1:17:47Hard ground ball foul outside of third strike one.
- 1:17:50He was taking the bunt that time and on the last minute he stepped back and he swung.
- 1:17:55No balls in one strike.
- 1:18:09All in one the goodie arrow.
- 1:18:11Tigers leading it 4-3 top half of the third inning.
- 1:18:18The stretch and the pitch.
- 1:18:20Hit in the air foul and into the feet.
- 1:18:22Right field side hits in the upper deck and back down.
- 1:18:24No balls and two strikes.
- 1:18:28Tigers leading 4-3 top half of the third inning.
- 1:18:31Yankees won the rest of the Tigers won the opener 2-1.
- 1:18:35But there's been more excitement in two innings plus in this game than there was in the entire nine innings of the opener.
- 1:18:44No balls and two strikes to count on goodie arrows.
- 1:18:48That folly floater is a huge blue bookmark that Hamilton just throw fatally right up in the air and it just floats down in the vicinity of the plate.
- 1:18:57Floater first getting back is Jim Price.
- 1:19:01And the hesitation Hummer is when he fakes that he's going to do it on the next pitch and then just whips it in fast.
- 1:19:09No balls and two strikes to goodie arrows.
- 1:19:12The pitch hit on the ground foul outside of third.
- 1:19:20Roe Verwezenger the third base coach had to dance out of the way of that one.
- 1:19:24No balls and two strikes.
- 1:19:35Steve Hamelin checks the run up right.
- 1:19:37The pitch to goodie arrows hit on the ground foul outside of third again.
- 1:19:41And there's still no balls and two strikes.
- 1:19:46Hamilton cannot throw either the folly floater or the hesitation Hummer with a man on base.
- 1:19:53It would be ruled a loss.
- 1:19:55He got a decision from the league president on that.
- 1:19:59Oh Hamilton still gives pretty good reasons why it shouldn't be.
- 1:20:03Nonetheless he abides by the decision. He's allowed to throw it with nobody on but he can't throw it with somebody on base.
- 1:20:10No balls two strikes to goodie arrows.
- 1:20:13Which is John Hiller's on deck. Here's the pitch.
- 1:20:16He just reaches out with the base hit in the center field.
- 1:20:19Down a second goes twice. He holds on. Goodie arrows makes a big turn at first for some reason and then goes back.
- 1:20:25He just reached out his bat and flunked it in the center field.
- 1:20:30And the Tigers have back to back singles to start off the third inning.
- 1:20:34And John Hiller will be coming up at an obvious bump situation.
- 1:20:39No doubt it'll be the bunt and Hiller a left hand batter.
- 1:20:47He's trying to lay one down and this should be interesting if he does lay one down they get a good shot.
- 1:20:53For a price at third base price with not too much speed.
- 1:20:58Left hand pitch to that best right hander.
- 1:21:03Gene Michael is coming in to talk to Steve Hamilton about the possibilities here.
- 1:21:09Tigers have them on again first and second and nobody out.
- 1:21:12They lead four to three in the top half of the third inning.
- 1:21:16And a wild and willing nightcap.
- 1:21:20All right look at Pete Waters he's almost at the plate the pitch.
- 1:21:24Low for ball one. One ball and no strikes.
- 1:21:31Jerry Kenny did not come in that much. He's anchoring at third.
- 1:21:36Thought the idea for Hiller would be to bunt it down towards third. Draw Kenny in.
- 1:21:40The stretch. Squares around. Bunts the ball right in front of the plate.
- 1:21:43Hamilton over to Kenny for one. The throw to first base. Safe at first base.
- 1:21:48Just missed that big triangle double play.
- 1:21:52But they get the key man at third base.
- 1:21:55Jim Price four to third and he was out by a mile.
- 1:21:59Bunted right back to Hamilton right where the Yankees would like it.
- 1:22:02Especially with the left handed pitcher he just had to whoop it over there.
- 1:22:05And Kenny alertly threw on the first and just missed.
- 1:22:08That big Steve bounced around real well for the veteran that he is.
- 1:22:14One out and here's Dalton Jones and they haven't gotten him out yet.
- 1:22:17He's at a home run on the walk.
- 1:22:21Didn't hit the walk he got a walk. The pitch. Swing it in that strike one.
- 1:22:25No balls in one strike. Jones first chance to bat against Hamilton.
- 1:22:32Tigers leading it four to three. First and second and one out.
- 1:22:36Jones a wicked line drive hitter was the rule. Here's the pitch.
- 1:22:39Curve is outside and it's one and one.
- 1:22:41Here's a fellow Phil. A lot of people always thought it would really be a good hitter in the big leagues.
- 1:22:45And somehow he just hasn't reached his potential.
- 1:22:48It's a strange case it really is. The only thing is they have never found a spot for him to play permanently.
- 1:22:53There was no doubt they everybody knew he could hit but they just couldn't find a spot for him to play.
- 1:22:57One on one the Jones the pitch. Swing line drive hit deep to right.
- 1:23:01Lefty going back he has room. He has the ball. Two out.
- 1:23:05Gidderich tag goes to third holding up first to tell her.
- 1:23:09One is on first and dead and two out.
- 1:23:11And there was another Jones line drive right on the button.
- 1:23:15All right two out. So now Steve Hamilton is one out away from getting out of it here on the top of the third.
- 1:23:23Tigers got two in the first. The Yankees got three in the first on a home run by Roy White a three run blast.
- 1:23:30Tigers got two in the second.
- 1:23:32Yankees had second and third in the bottom of the second but didn't get them in.
- 1:23:36The Tigers here at first and second nobody out but they haven't scored yet.
- 1:23:39First and third and two out.
- 1:23:44Gutierrez who can move is on third.
- 1:23:47Hillary Cant on first. The pitch outside for ball one.
- 1:23:56One ball and no strikes. Stanley's been tough all night. He's got a walking single in this game.
- 1:24:00First game he had a triple and a double and scored both their runs.
- 1:24:04The stretch. The pitch Stanley takes. Just missed the corner. Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:24:10That didn't miss by an awful lot.
- 1:24:13Two and all to count.
- 1:24:16Fans enjoying the second game.
- 1:24:20Yankee fans would love to see them win it. Pitch hit on the ground foul and it's two and one.
- 1:24:32Phil and I have often debated the merits of those low scoring games compared to a three for all like this.
- 1:24:38Now you couldn't say that first game was more exciting than this could you Phil?
- 1:24:41I could Bob.
- 1:24:43Hit on the ground between third and short. It's in the left field for a base hit.
- 1:24:47Hillary goes to second. Gutierrez is in the score. And that Mickey Stanley has done it again.
- 1:24:54Two singles and a walk in three innings. He walked in the first, singles in the second, singles here in the third.
- 1:25:00And that's after scoring both runs following a triple and a double in the first game.
- 1:25:06Five to three the Tigers lead it.
- 1:25:16Ike Brown the next batter. Ike came up as a pinch hitter for Gates Brown in the second inning.
- 1:25:21It was the first batter that Hamilton faced. And he hit a little ground ball the first day.
- 1:25:26Pete Ward hesitated. Been through a home and it was too late.
- 1:25:30Five to three the Tigers. H. Gordon every inning. Hamilton's pitch high for ball one. One ball and no strike.
- 1:25:41Pitches of record right now. Stan Bonson.
- 1:25:48And John Hiller. The stretch and the pitch. Swing and a miss and what a cut he took. One and one.
- 1:26:00Bonson left with one out in the second inning.
- 1:26:06Here's the pitch. Curve is in there for the call. Strike and it's one and two.
- 1:26:20The stretch and the pitch. Swing and a pop up foul coming back and onto the screen.
- 1:26:28One ball and two strikes.
- 1:26:36Stan Bonson gave up two runs in the first inning on two hits. One of which was a home run by Jones.
- 1:26:41Second inning he faced four men. Got one out, two hits and a walk.
- 1:26:46Pitch a little blooper hit in the center field. Bobby Mercer under it and he makes the catch to the Tigers' diet.
- 1:26:52Brown did not get good wood on that ball.
- 1:26:55Actually didn't get his body behind it and it flies out to center field.
- 1:26:59However the Tigers get another run in the third inning. They have three hits, no Yankees errors and two left.
- 1:27:04At the end of two and a half the Tigers five and the Yankees three.

- 1:28:04Speaking of our favorite ball team, let's get back to today's game.
- 1:28:17I was on the bottom of the third. Detroit leading 5-3. The Tigers have seven hits.
- 1:28:21The Yankees have three. And for the Yankees, Roy White who hit the three run homer in the first inning will be ready to lead off.
- 1:28:29Only this time Roy will be switching around about right handed against the left handed John Hiller.
- 1:28:34And here is Bob.
- 1:28:36Alright, Roy White steps in. He'll get a nice hand following that three run homer that he hit.
- 1:28:45First pitch to Roy. Swing and a foul back. Strike one. No balls and one strike.
- 1:28:55White hitting an even three hundredth. His average fell below the three hundred mark in the first game of the doubleheader.
- 1:29:00The first time since the fourth game of the season.
- 1:29:03Hiller delivers. White takes outside. The ball and it's one and one.
- 1:29:14Hiller has only started one game in 31 appearances.
- 1:29:17White lives one beyond second but going back to make the catch second baseman Dalton Jones and there's one out.
- 1:29:26One up and one down.
- 1:29:31And it brings up Danny Cader who is going to pinch hit for Pete Ward.
- 1:29:38Look down and saw Cader and you more or less expect him because he plays his most ball games.
- 1:29:42But I just realized Pete Ward is expected to bat so Cader is the pinch hitter.
- 1:29:53Danny Cader is a pinch hitter. One out in the bottom of the third. Five to three the Tigers later.
- 1:29:58Cader will probably go in to play first base.
- 1:30:01Hiller winds and delivers outside for ball one. One ball and no strike.
- 1:30:15Here's the wind up and the pitch. Swing and a miss for the call. Strike and it's one and one.
- 1:30:20One ball one strike to Danny Cader. Roy White has popped out to start off the bottom of the third.
- 1:30:27Five to three the Tigers lead it. First game of the Tigers two to one.
- 1:30:34The wind up by Hiller and the pitch. Swing and a bounce to the third. Big hop and it's stayed with it by Ward.
- 1:30:40A throw to first is in time. Ward really stayed with that one. A huge hop and he just smothered it in his chest.
- 1:30:46And he made the play on Danny Cader. Two out.
- 1:30:50Well this has been a very quiet bottom of the third inning. Two up and two down. It brings up Kirk Leffrie.
- 1:30:57Leffrie flat out to center field his first time up.
- 1:31:15Hiller will have a complete run down on the straws for you after the next out.
- 1:31:20Five to three the Tigers lead it. Bottom of the third.
- 1:31:25Hiller into the wind up and the pitch. High for ball one. One ball and no strike.
- 1:31:29Hiller doesn't look like the type of release pitcher who can go all the way from the second inning either.
- 1:31:37The pitch hit for a long drive to right field. Maybe a little bit too high.
- 1:31:41Coming in and under it is Northrop. He makes the catch and the side retires.
- 1:31:45Leffrie got under that ball just a little bit too much. No runs, no hits, no arrows and nobody left.
- 1:31:50At the end of three the Tigers five, the Yankees three. For the scores in the next three innings Phil Lizudo.
- 1:31:58All right on the scoreboard Cleveland shut out the Orioles four nothing. Dean chance to win it all the way.
- 1:32:03Way out the loser. Tony Horton home in the first with two on and Greg Nettles in the sixth and seventeenth.
- 1:32:11In the second game at the end of four and a half is Baltimore three Cleveland one Hardin against Dunning.
- 1:32:16The Senators lead the Red Sox three to two at the end of seven. Hardenstein against Cox and Mike Andrews got his 11th home run of the year and the third for the Red Sox.
- 1:32:25The White Sox beat Milwaukee seven to three this afternoon. Janeski the winner downing the loser.
- 1:32:30Bill Melton got his 20th home run of the year for the White Sox. Oakland three Kansas City nothing and a two.
- 1:32:36Seguir for Oakland. Rooker started Fitzmaurice in the second. Angels fail to score on the top of the first twins batting.
- 1:32:43Messer Smith against Zep. The Mets fail to score on the top of the first Cardinals batting.
- 1:32:48It's Sievers 16 and five against Nelson Briles with the Cardinals.
- 1:32:52Pittsburgh shut out the Phillies four nothing in the first game. Ellis the winner bunning the loser.
- 1:32:56That game took only one hour and 47 minutes to play. Second game Phillies scored two in the first. Pirates batting.
- 1:33:04And at the end of one half inning is Phillies two. Pirates nothing. Champion against Dow Canton.
- 1:33:11Cubs two Montreal nothing and a four Holtzman against Morton.
- 1:33:16A Giants beat Cincinnati nine three. Reberg of the winner Washburn the loser.
- 1:33:21Tony Perez got his 30 second home run of the year and now has 100 RBI's on the year and the first pitch.
- 1:33:28What a play by Clark. The throw. He dropped it. Oh he was just ready to call him out.
- 1:33:35As Norm Cash hit a ground ball over second. Clark made a great backhand stop. His throw would have been in time.
- 1:33:42A little low. Danny Cater dropped the ball. It'll go as a base hit.
- 1:33:47A fine effort by Horace Clark. And it's a base hit for Norm Cash who has now walked twice and single.
- 1:33:58And now Rush Nagleton who bounced the second and struck out.
- 1:34:05William McCovey got his 28th home of the year with two on for the Giants in that game. Nagleton takes the strike.
- 1:34:12The Dodgers at L.A. a latest start and Houston at San Diego a latest start.
- 1:34:25One strike. The Yankees trailing five three.
- 1:34:30Steve Hamilton in relief of Stan Bonson. Throw to first base and Cash is back.
- 1:34:48Hamilton's first style on Kirk Bonnet. It's a beauty. Kenny up with it. Fires the first just in time.
- 1:34:58That play goes five to three. Third baseman of the first baseman covering it's a sacrifice.
- 1:35:05Beautiful sacrifice by Nagleton who brings up downward. Worth single right. They drive in a run in the first inning.
- 1:35:11Fly to left in the second. And I might add fly deep to left with the bases loaded.
- 1:35:20He's set wide back on the warning track almost against the fence near the 402 foot sign.
- 1:35:27In a long three innings Frank Messer. It has and I'm going to shake you up in just a second.
- 1:35:33All right one out. Word swings pops it up it's playable.
- 1:35:37Jake Gibbs and look out Cater now Gibbs calls and makes the catch.
- 1:35:42And it's two away. And the battle will be Jimmy Price who is bounced to short and single center.
- 1:35:50Looking back at that ball Norm Cash hit. Yes. Would you believe an error has been charged to Danny Cater. Oh no I don't believe it.
- 1:36:01Who is our official score tonight. Joe Donnelly I believe. Joe Donnelly. I believe so. I will have to be given Mr. Donnelly a call.
- 1:36:12Unbelievable. If there were to be an error I think I'd have to go the other way. Yes.
- 1:36:17The throw is in the dirt right. There's a ball popped to shallow right field. Bluffery will have to hurry.
- 1:36:22Digging looses the hat. Look out and Flock. He makes the run.
- 1:36:26Holy cow how Flock ever got there I'll never know. I thought Bluffery was the only one that had a chance to catch it.
- 1:36:34But Flock came out of nowhere as a part of the collision made a great play.
- 1:36:40Well as of now no runs no hits one error and a man left. And at the end of three and a half it's Detroit five and the Yankees three.
- 1:36:50Well while Phil goes to argue with the official score.
- 1:36:57We're going to tell you about something that's always very very worthwhile.
- 1:37:02And that is the annual baseball game between the Yankees and the New York Mets the Mayor's Trophy game for the proceeds going to further the Sandlot baseball program here in the New York area.
- 1:37:13Certainly for a very worthwhile cause everybody always has a lot of fun and don't you think these players don't go all out to win that ballgame.
- 1:37:20Of the seven games played the Mets have won five so the Yankees have some catching up to do and they'll try to catch start catching up here in their own backyard.
- 1:37:29Yankee Stadium Monday night August 17th the eighth annual Mayor's Trophy game will start at seven o'clock Monday night August 17th.
- 1:37:40So we hope you'll get your tickets and be on hand and enjoy the fun enjoy good baseball game.
- 1:37:46I know that as you buy your ticket you're helping the kids in New York to play Sandlot baseball by furthering that program.
- 1:37:57Well you're back. Yes I'm back.
- 1:38:00I have made my call and Joe Donnelly is thinking it over.
- 1:38:06I'll let you know in just a little while whether I've persuaded him to change his call is Jerry Kenny swings and this is strike one Jerry struck out his first time.
- 1:38:22Thank you.
- 1:38:23The three and the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:38:27He'll his pitch high and tight one of my.
- 1:38:32So neither Joe Negros nor Stan Bonson stayed around very long in this ballgame as both clubs had their hitting shoes on very early in the game as a curve outside.
- 1:38:41One thing we see that quite often fill the first game with double header see a tight pitchers dual second game the hitters really break out and you can't figure it out.
- 1:38:54There's a strike on the outside.
- 1:38:55There's no rhyme or reason for it.
- 1:38:57You would think the second game be just the opposite players might be so tired but here it is the first game a two to one thriller and this one looks like it could be any sort of pops it up that third base downward and foul territory makes the catch right
- 1:39:10because of and there's one away that'll bring up Jean Michael Jean line hard to first base his first time up.
- 1:39:20I guess for two in the first two in the second one in the third all three Yankee runs coming in the bottom of the first on a three run homer by raw white Johnny Ellis is on deck so it looks like that's going to be all for Steve Hamilton.
- 1:39:37First pitch is strike one a game Michael.
- 1:39:47He started a bunch takes it in a strike two call.
- 1:39:53Nothing in to
- 1:40:03feel straight away on James batting right handed against the left handed hill of the curve outside one ball two strikes.
- 1:40:17A beautiful night for this twin bill.
- 1:40:20One to pretty curve outside and it's true and true.
- 1:40:37The two to pitch low and inside ball three.
- 1:40:51Your old law fair first game in Cleveland.
- 1:40:54As a line drive in a left center field by coming on as Stanley and he makes the catch.
- 1:41:00And we pause for station identification.
- 1:41:04This is Shannon in the morning coming your way Monday through Saturday 530 to 10 here on the fresh air sound of radio 81 W. G. Weiss connected.
- 1:41:17Oh, very Johnny Ellis comes on.
- 1:41:21Do the batting.
- 1:41:24You are there and nobody on.
- 1:41:31John Hiller getting the time he wine is pitch outside and high ball one.
- 1:41:48This will fall back on the screen.
- 1:41:55One ball one strike to.
- 1:42:03Bill kicks off speed pitch line hard but foul in the seats alongside the left field by line.
- 1:42:22There's a one to delivery fastball foul just below it.
- 1:42:26That's a new dance step that Frank messages came up with you should have seen it.
- 1:42:31The end Adam for the left right side was purely a quick.
- 1:42:36He started to go for it and was coming back to bed as I lean to my right frankly into his left.
- 1:42:45Once you pitch again line deep but foul a left field.
- 1:42:50I was just leaning out of the way to give you room to catch that one.
- 1:42:53Now listen you're a lot better than we had a couple red barbers soon as a foul was that he'd go right underneath the table.
- 1:43:09Somebody just brought a check to Frank Mesa.
- 1:43:11How do you like that.
- 1:43:15The one to pitch hard line drive caught by Don word fall it right on the button to line drive that ending but no basis.
- 1:43:26Nobody left and at the end of four full innings it's Detroit five and the Yankees three mid Hudson Yankee fans attention.

- 1:44:48The plumber will come on the pitch to Gutierrez and the pitcher will be due for Detroit and then the top of the order Steve Hamilton goes two and two thirds innings.
- 1:45:00Hamilton gave up one run three hits.
- 1:45:05Walked one and struck out about it.
- 1:45:16Klinckowski has done just about everything for the Yankees. He has started he's worked in long relief and short relief.
- 1:45:25Coming into his 31st ballgame with a record of three wins and four losses.
- 1:45:30He started only two times.
- 1:45:34And pitches to an earned run average of three point fourteen.
- 1:45:39Sure that Phil and Bob talked about it before but in case you weren't listening we'd like to tell you that Mayor John Lindsay has proclaimed Saturday August 8th as Casey Stengel Day here in New York City.
- 1:45:51Stengel the guest of honor at Old Timers Day Saturday here at the stadium and the mayor will honor Stengel and formal ceremonies in the Blue Room of City Hall tomorrow morning at eleven thirty.
- 1:46:01Casey and his wife Mrs. Edna Stengel arrived in town from Glendale California tonight will be at City Hall tomorrow at eleven thirty accompanied by Lee McPhail executive vice president and general manager of the Yankees.
- 1:46:14And Mr. George Weiss the Yankee general manager during Casey's managerial days here at the stadium.
- 1:46:22Mr. Weiss was also a general manager and president of Mets while Casey was the Mets pilot.
- 1:46:28Mayor Lindsay will present the bronze medallion of the city of New York to Casey tomorrow.
- 1:46:33The medallion the highest award presented by the city of New York.
- 1:46:38Right now from Kelsky ready to take on Cesar Gutierrez and here's Phil.
- 1:46:43All right Frank the first pitch to Gutierrez he bluffs the bunt takes a strike.
- 1:46:47He's required to write single incentive so far in this game.
- 1:46:51And in the first game he beat out a beautiful bunt.
- 1:46:55He was one for four in the first game.
- 1:46:59The right hand batter from Kelsky's pitch bounce the third backhanded by Kenny.
- 1:47:03Nice play by the person.
- 1:47:06Oh that was a pretty play by Jerry Kenny.
- 1:47:10And Kelsky really hit the deck as Jerry had a fire right over Kelsky's head.
- 1:47:16So one out and now John Hiller wanted into a force play his only time in bat in this ballgame.
- 1:47:24John Hickrow who started the game was a bad one time single and scored a run.
- 1:47:32And neither starting pitchers around.
- 1:47:35This is a curve in their strike one ball.
- 1:47:45And Kelsky's curve again in their strike two.
- 1:47:51On deck Dauvin Jones.
- 1:47:59Another curve bounces there at Kenny has this on a big hobby he plays.
- 1:48:03Fires the first.
- 1:48:06And they're a two away.
- 1:48:11I still have a hit up there for Norm Cash Frank.
- 1:48:14Now waiting for word I know it Mr. Donnelly.
- 1:48:23Don Jones homered leading off the ballgame walked and scored in the second and then line deep the right field in the third.
- 1:48:33Dick McCall of Tigers regular second baseman getting a rest.
- 1:48:37As is Al Kalin in his second game of the double header there's a strike as ball just above the knee.
- 1:48:50You are nobody on five three Tigers lead breaking pitch long and admit that that pitch was in and down.
- 1:48:58Nothing in two.
- 1:49:10And then the strikeout gives Gibbs an assistant caterer put out three up three down and now at the end of four and a half.
- 1:49:29Well the answers and the Tigers wind up this series tomorrow night with a single game here at the stadium at eight o'clock and it looks like a fair of left handers will be the
- 1:49:37Provos less game very possibly will go over to try to the shoulders OK and for the New York Yankees Mike McCormick is the probable starter game starts at eight o'clock here at the stadium.
- 1:49:54Right hard clock the top of the order. Ellis pitches inside ball one clock hits in the box and walk.
- 1:50:08The pitches hit in a shallow right field could be trouble and it's up to a basic and gets away from the second baseman the clock goes into second.
- 1:50:18Good heads up base running by hard clock as he's done one in shallow right field.
- 1:50:25Don't go on one half and the ball pops out of his glove and was sliding in the second base.
- 1:50:33And we're going to give Clark a double.
- 1:50:38I'm going to do it Mr. Donnelly gives him and the better Jake gives you a single and double and quarter on in this game.
- 1:50:51All right.
- 1:50:52That's a second base a double it's a double.
- 1:51:08And the other who came out in the second inning struck out Mercer got the side in order in the third and fourth.
- 1:51:23I once tried going Jake get Yankee trail 5 3 but nobody out here in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:51:29And he's got to go away. He'll take his pitches. I almost got away from right one on one and on deck Bobby Mercer.
- 1:51:49That's again high and outside again ball to do one or he'll want to new baseball.
- 1:52:00That's it from play them by John Rice.
- 1:52:05I see him by a price to catch the 2 1 delivery outside ball 3 3 and 1 Yankee fans coming alive here.
- 1:52:21Haven't had too much to cheer about in the first game.
- 1:52:24They scored just one run in this game.
- 1:52:26They scored their three runs in one inning.
- 1:52:31Now the 3 1 pitch right ball Jake has started down to first base and taking two steps.
- 1:52:52Right the stretch now by Hello block leads off second the pitch bringing in a missed right three room slider and got him.
- 1:53:03He'll his second strikeouts is coming in the ballgame and a big one and it brings up Bobby Mercer Bobby has walked and struck out.
- 1:53:12Mercer and give Iran when Roy White unloaded his long home run in the first inning and Roy is on deck.
- 1:53:23It's the Bobby Mercer is a curve high and tight ball one.
- 1:53:34Now they want to take a look at that baseball and writes is going to throw it out of play.
- 1:53:42I'll be Mercer saw something on it.
- 1:53:43He didn't like.
- 1:53:51I'm ready for the 1 0 pitch Bobby swings it down the left field line.
- 1:53:55I'm going to be on the warning track and it went into the stand.
- 1:54:04Well, I don't know how you like that.
- 1:54:07They got to it.
- 1:54:09The ball hit right in his glove and it went right into the stand.
- 1:54:14And Bobby Mercer gets himself a good call.
- 1:54:19That's exactly it.
- 1:54:25And watching the play with the binoculars.
- 1:54:28Well, that's exactly what happened.
- 1:54:30Brown talked the ball out of any of love going toward the seat.
- 1:54:34The ball popped out of his glove and fell into the state, which makes it a home run and did not touch the ground.
- 1:54:41All right, Frank and his life or hit a home run with two on in the first inning, pop the second takes a quick drive ball one.
- 1:54:52Now, Bobby Mercer, only one home run the whole month of July, July 1st now has it back to back on runs and tonight.
- 1:54:59Right. He has that and both left hand pitchers.
- 1:55:05All right, right now with the two balls, those like we got a brand new ballgame here outside by five.
- 1:55:12Hella takes the liver, hits low ball three, three and nothing.
- 1:55:18We told you earlier when I found one out to left field, he is an infielder, occasionally plays the outfield.
- 1:55:25It's pretty tough when an infielder goes out there.
- 1:55:28That's a lot of room out there and you kind of lost as a strike to Roy three and one.
- 1:55:34I found got to the ball after losing his cap, but it hit right in his glove and bounce right into the stand.
- 1:55:42The three one delivery swing and a miss and Roy was gone for that home run out in front of the curve ball three and two.
- 1:55:53So Bobby Mercer's 17th home run of the year and now has 54 runs batted in.
- 1:55:59This ball is low ball for Earthwalk given up by Hella.
- 1:56:06White on first and about an hour Danny Tater.
- 1:56:11Pete Ward started the game at first base. Pete was at bat once in walk.
- 1:56:15Tater came on and batted for Ward in the third and bounced out in the third.
- 1:56:21Now there's one out, old giant five five.
- 1:56:27Yankees scored all their runs a return of homers.
- 1:56:31Three run homer by Roy White, a two run homer by Bobby Mercer.
- 1:56:35Tater really digging himself a hole at the plate.
- 1:56:43Go to first base, White is back.
- 1:56:50I think that's the first time I can recall seeing a fly ball hit in a fielders glove and then a bouncer out of the park for a home run.
- 1:56:56I know it's happened before.
- 1:56:58Line drive, what a play by Ward.
- 1:57:00You know Frank it's the first time I ever remember it.
- 1:57:03Playing or watching, really doing a game. Yes.
- 1:57:06Very unusual.
- 1:57:08But that was quite a play by Don Ward.
- 1:57:12I don't know what Ike Brown thought it was three out or what he was backing up but he's a little upset with that play and he started running off the field.
- 1:57:19Now realizes it's only two out and goes back to left field.
- 1:57:22He's a little embarrassed but that was quite a play by Ward as he robbed Danny Kader of an extra base hit.
- 1:57:36First pistol, Bluffery, strike one call. Bluffery fly to center and fly to right.
- 1:57:46Service high outside, one and one. Two out, two runs in, all side, five five, bottom of the fifth.
- 1:58:01White leads away at first.
- 1:58:03Has a curve low, ball two, two and one.
- 1:58:12Hella drops the ball out on the mound, walks down, picks it up.
- 1:58:24Now the stretch. Curve swung out and missed even to count it two and two.
- 1:58:38And now the two two pitch. Fly ball to center field.
- 1:58:42Starting back at Stanley now come running in and makes the catch.
- 1:58:46But the Yankees tie it up. Two runs, two hits, no error as the man left.
- 1:58:51And at the end of five it's Detroit five and the Yankees five.
- 1:59:09Well the grounds crew has done its work on the infield and we settle back for the second half of this ballgame.
- 1:59:15The Yankees have come from behind twice now.
- 1:59:18They've tied it down two nothing in the first one, they had three to two in the bottom half of the first.
- 1:59:22Then down five to three and they've tied it up.
- 1:59:25On the home run by Bobby Merson and Mickey Stanley is set to lead off the top half of the sixth.
- 1:59:33Wide run, Kremkowski.
- 1:59:38There's now the pitcher of record along with John Heller.
- 1:59:43The Yankees stand bouncing, Steve Hamilton and now Kremkowski.
- 1:59:52Mickey Stanley has walked single twice and has driven in two runs.
- 1:59:57And Jim Northrup is on deck swinging a bat and looks like he'll bat for Brown.
- 2:00:02Is the bouncing ball clock to his right, has it? Why is an in time to first base?
- 2:00:09The Yankees are really bouncing around now in this second ballgame.
- 2:00:13And Northrup will come on a bat for Ike Brown.
- 2:00:22Northrup who has had kind of a gimpy leg is in there.
- 2:00:28In the first game Northrup got a single, a walk and a sacrifice fly.
- 2:00:34He knocked in the winning run with that sacrifice fly by the way in the fifth inning.
- 2:00:41So he was one for two in that first game and he hits one in deep left center.
- 2:00:45Way back, way back.
- 2:00:47And Roy White catches it, falls down, does a somersault and holds onto it.
- 2:00:53Holy cow.
- 2:00:55That ball was hit about 420 feet, the deep left center.
- 2:01:01And Roy White after catching the ball, lost his cap, fell down, turned completely over.
- 2:01:08And there goes Northrup's helmet lying out of the dugout and I don't blame him.
- 2:01:12He was robbed of a triple at least.
- 2:01:16What a play by Roy White.
- 2:01:23It brings up Norm Cashew's walk twice and I still say has an infield hit.
- 2:01:29But Joe Donnelly says an error was given to Cader on a great stop by Clark.
- 2:01:34A left balance throw that was in the dirt.
- 2:01:42One strike, two out, nobody on 5-5 the score.
- 2:01:46Foul upstairs out of play.
- 2:01:530-2.
- 2:02:07Klenkowski checks the sign with Gibbs.
- 2:02:13Bouncing ball to first base, Cader has it.
- 2:02:15He'll make the play unassisted.
- 2:02:17And Klenkowski for the second inning in a row retires the Tigers in order.
- 2:02:22At the end of 5-1 half it's still the Tigers 5, the Yankees 5.
- 2:02:31All right, we get ready to go.
- 2:02:35So Northrup remains in the ball game and will play Lovefield.
- 2:02:43They batted for Brown, he stays in at Lovefield.
- 2:02:46Kenny swings and misses.
- 2:02:49High fastball by Hiller.
- 2:02:51Kenny is struck out and pops at third base.
- 2:02:54All tied at 5-5.
- 2:03:02Mr. Kenny is a little bit low, 1-1.
- 2:03:11Frank Messer will have all the scores for you at the end of this half inning.
- 2:03:161-1 delivery, he bunched, oh but it goes foul.
- 2:03:19And man, Kenny would have beaten that one out easily had it stayed fair.
- 2:03:23You talk about a run and jump, he had it that time.
- 2:03:29So it's one ball, two strikes.
- 2:03:31Yankees lost the first game 2-1 and this game is all tied up 5-5.
- 2:03:42Long road trip by the Yankees, just concluded.
- 2:03:51Tigers are on the start of a real rough road trip.
- 2:03:56But once you pitch, he checked his swing and his eye, 2-2.
- 2:04:10Line drive to Lovefield, fair ball, fair ball.
- 2:04:14Kenny's going to be in at second base with a standup double.
- 2:04:18And that looked like a high inside fastball and Kenny drilled it over third in the left field, right down the corner.
- 2:04:27The Yankees face lead number 6 and it brings up Gene Michael.
- 2:04:32Gene, line to first and line to center.
- 2:04:54Gene swings and misses strike line.
- 2:04:57Yankees have had six great hits, five of them extra base hits.
- 2:05:02And Lindy McDaniel gets up in the Yankee bullpen.
- 2:05:07All tied at 5-5 and Fairman Monson is coming out on deck.
- 2:05:12So let's see now if the Yankees go for the sacrifice.
- 2:05:14Here's the stretch.
- 2:05:16Michael starts the punt, takes it low, 1-1.
- 2:05:21Fairman Monson is in the on deck circle.
- 2:05:27Now this could be a decoy or he could be sending Monson up to bat for Klemkowski.
- 2:05:35Jerry Kenny leads off second.
- 2:05:38The pitch, Michael bunts it down, third at the dandy and Hillel looks the throw, not in time, he's made the base hit.
- 2:05:46Beautiful punt by Gene Michael.
- 2:05:48He's got the wall off balance, Hillel caught the ball, took a look at third base and that's what ruins his chances of getting Michael.
- 2:05:56That'll be a single for Gene Michael, running that first and carrying nobody out.
- 2:06:03And now Fairman Monson will come on the back for Klemkowski.
- 2:06:08By first real pause for station identification.
- 2:06:12This is your guy, High Agents.
- 2:06:14Your Kind of Music, weekdays 3 to 7, here on the fresh air sound of Radio 81, WGY Schenectady.
- 2:06:34Now it looks like we're going to have a new pitcher, Frank, a right hander.
- 2:06:38That's it, Hillel is out of the ball game now.
- 2:06:43Three and one third innings, has given up two runs, four hits.
- 2:06:50Walked only one and struck out two men.
- 2:06:54And the double by Jerry Kenny to left field, looks like Kenny picked that ball right off his left ear, didn't it Phil?
- 2:07:00Sure did, Frank.
- 2:07:01And the bunt single perfectly placed by Gene Michael.
- 2:07:06And John Hiller goes out of the ball game.
- 2:07:10Fairman Monson, that's a tough spot for Monson right now.
- 2:07:15He's got a 12 game history going.
- 2:07:17And technically if he doesn't get a base hit as a pinch hitter here it would end.
- 2:07:20That's right, it certainly would.
- 2:07:23And that is a tough break, but this young man has done pretty well as a pinch hitter I believe this year.
- 2:07:30I think he's done very well.
- 2:07:32In fact he may be batting a thousand as a pinch hitter.
- 2:07:35Three for four, that's right.
- 2:07:37He's not bad in any league.
- 2:07:42Jimmy Hunter tells us it's number 43 coming in.
- 2:07:47And number 43, what always happens to all of the numberless, it's Darryl Patterson.
- 2:08:03Alright, Darryl Patterson, if I remember rightly he's a hard-throwing right-hander.
- 2:08:12Darryl Patterson has a record of two and one.
- 2:08:16He's been in 24 games.
- 2:08:18He's also credited with two saves.
- 2:08:24He's having a long huddle out there with Price as Mayo Smith leaves.
- 2:08:30Maybe the first time Price has taught him in a long time, Price doesn't get in too many games.
- 2:08:34Oh, that's true, he doesn't with that brand out there.
- 2:08:39Let's see what Patterson has done against the Yankees this year.
- 2:08:43He's been in only one ball game I believe, July the 1st in Detroit.
- 2:08:50That was an 11-inning ball game.
- 2:08:52Detroit won it 6-5 and Patterson pitched one in the third innings, did not give up a run or a hit.
- 2:08:58He pitched one and didn't strike out anybody.
- 2:09:04Well, the names are still going up on the message board.
- 2:09:06Those accepting invitations for all time and stay, just glancing up there right now,
- 2:09:11Yogi Berra, Dominic DiMaggio, and Bob Shirley.
- 2:09:16I'll tell you, Phil, there's trio right there worth going out to see if there wasn't anybody else.
- 2:09:20Absolutely.
- 2:09:22The little professor, Dominic DiMaggio, and the old professor, Casey Singles.
- 2:09:27That's what they used to call Dominic because he looked like a teacher with the big glasses he wore,
- 2:09:31very scholarly, hardly ever smiled, you know.
- 2:09:34Oh really? Oh yeah.
- 2:09:35He and DiMaggio would say hello at the beginning of the year and goodbye at the end of the year.
- 2:09:41Brothers, you know, and they were brothers, but a very closed-mouthed family at that time.
- 2:09:47But now both of them, since being out of baseball, have become extroverts now.
- 2:09:52Really?
- 2:09:53It's hard to shut either one up.
- 2:09:54How about Vince?
- 2:09:55Was he like the other two?
- 2:09:57He was exactly like the other two, except that he had studied opera, and he would sing at the drop of a hat.
- 2:10:04Would it have to be an opera hat?
- 2:10:06No. I roomed with him for a while in Kansas City.
- 2:10:09Oh really?
- 2:10:10I was very fortunate, but you know, you like to room with big leaguers in talking when I was in the minor league,
- 2:10:16but as much as I loved the opera, he got to me.
- 2:10:22Now was he a good singer?
- 2:10:23Oh yes.
- 2:10:24He was.
- 2:10:25Very good.
- 2:10:26But you know, when you're in those small minor league hotels, and there's only one play,
- 2:10:29go in the bathroom and sing, you always sound better off.
- 2:10:32Would he sing in Italian?
- 2:10:33Oh yes.
- 2:10:35All right. Well, let's take care of the DiMaggio's. Let's get back here now with Thurman Munson.
- 2:10:39Okay. Thurman Munson.
- 2:10:43So Munson kept his hitting streak going in the first game.
- 2:10:48He was one for three with a walk and a run batted in. That's a throw to first.
- 2:10:53But Michael is back.
- 2:10:56Kenny Bluffing coming down the line at third so Cash holds the ball.
- 2:11:00The Yankees have good speed now on the bases and at home plate.
- 2:11:05Nobody out of five-five ball game in the bottom of the sixth.
- 2:11:09The stretch by Patterson.
- 2:11:11The pitch to Munson. Outside ball line.
- 2:11:19Harris Clark is on deck.
- 2:11:35Patterson gets the sign.
- 2:11:39And he leads wide of third in foul territory.
- 2:11:41The pitch is a little bit high.
- 2:11:44To an all, Patterson almost stumbled off the mound and Price wanted to know why that wasn't a strike.
- 2:11:58Two balls, no strike.
- 2:12:04What happens sometimes on those close calls, the catcher will jump up too quickly and he'll actually block the umpire's view of the pitch.
- 2:12:13By Patterson sets again.
- 2:12:16His pitch swing and a miss.
- 2:12:18Two balls and a strike. That pitch was out of the strike zone but Thurman was guessing and going for it.
- 2:12:23You can't blame him. Ahead two and nothing.
- 2:12:27If he likes it, at least get a long fly ball.
- 2:12:35Nobody out.
- 2:12:39Five-five to score.
- 2:12:42Gene Michael with a good lead at first. Kenny leading off third.
- 2:12:47The 2-1 pitch. A bouncer up the middle but right there the second baseman steps on the back, throws the first double play.
- 2:12:54The run scores. The Yankees go out in front six to five.
- 2:12:58But Munson bounces into a double play.
- 2:13:03Four, four, three.
- 2:13:14Jolton Jones backhanded that high hopping ground ball, stepped on second and threw the first.
- 2:13:20No RBI for Munson but the Yankees go out in front six to five.
- 2:13:25And now Harris Clark hits to the box, walks and double the right field and scored ahead of Mercer's home in the fifth.
- 2:13:41So Patterson delivers the clock at tie ball one.
- 2:13:51Jolton Jones was shading Munson over that way and it looked like it might be a base hitter, a bouncer right over the pitcher's head.
- 2:13:58Almost over the bag.
- 2:14:01Line, oh that off Patterson's glove. Jones is there, fires the first. They got him.
- 2:14:07And I want to tell you that play had everything. It almost took Patterson's head off. He slowed it down with his glove.
- 2:14:15Jones picked it up through to Cash who's foot came off that bag way too soon and called out at first base.
- 2:14:22But it was excitement all the way. One, four, three.
- 2:14:26The Yankees pick up a run. Two hits, no errors and nobody left.
- 2:14:31The end of six is the Yankees sixth. Detroit five, Frank Messer will have all the scores for him and carry it right down to the wire.
- 2:14:38Now Lindy McDaniel is on the pitch for the Yankees and we go to the seventh inning.
- 2:14:42Russ Nagelson leads things off for the Detroit Tigers. Nagelson left hand batter is over two and he has a sacrifice.
- 2:14:48He takes low ball one.
- 2:14:52Ron Klunkowski pitched two perfect innings, retired six men in a row, struck out one of them.
- 2:14:58Got a great catch behind him by Roy White.
- 2:15:01There's a fastball for a strike and John Rice a little undecided what to call it and good gracious is the Detroit bench getting on him or not?
- 2:15:13John Rice now puts up a finger on each hand signifying one and one.
- 2:15:19Mayo Smith is really getting on Rice from the Detroit dugout.
- 2:15:23There's a pitch loan outside to make it two and one.
- 2:15:26The Tigers have not agreed with Mr. Rice on several occasions tonight.
- 2:15:31And now John Rice looks over and it appears that he is warning the bench that he doesn't want to hear anymore.
- 2:15:41He also has a strike to Nagelson. McDaniel kicks and deals down low at it's ball three, three and one.
- 2:15:56Word on deck and then Rice.
- 2:15:59Three one pitch right down the middle for a call strike two and the count goes full three and two to Nagelson.
- 2:16:08Lindy McDaniel is not allowed to run in his last nine appearances covering 17 innings.
- 2:16:13He has an ERA of 167 and he walks Nagelson with a ball four low.
- 2:16:22Lindy McDaniel has picked up seven saves in his last nine outings.
- 2:16:28Now Don Wert with the Yankees leading six to five.
- 2:16:33He's single and a long fly ball to left field and fouled out to the catcher Jake Gibbs.
- 2:16:45McDaniel off the stretch.
- 2:16:48Cater holding on the runner on the pitch.
- 2:16:50Wirt takes it low. It's dug out of the dirt by Gibbs.
- 2:17:00Lindy McDaniel in 40 appearances has now walked only 13 men.
- 2:17:09He delivers the one-oh pitch and it's low or no. It gets the outside corner at the knees for a call strike one and one.
- 2:17:25Jim Price is on deck.
- 2:17:28Cater holding against the base runner Nagelson. In field set for the double play possibility.
- 2:17:33McDaniel turns it loose. Curve ball is hit in the air to left field. Roy White digging to his left now goes back, back and makes the catch.
- 2:17:43White went to his left first then had the backpedal and bowls it in in deep left field.
- 2:17:48And I'll tell you Roy White has had a lot of ground to cover out there tonight.
- 2:17:55He caught Don Wirt's drive next to the seats in the second inning.
- 2:18:00He caught Jim Moplip's drive in deep, deep left center about 420 feet or so back.
- 2:18:08And now he goes deep to take care of Wirt again. Jim Price steps in. Drag one goal.
- 2:18:17Now Price is going to argue with Rice.
- 2:18:29No balls and a strike to Jim Price. The catcher has gone one for three tonight.
- 2:18:43Price still has not stepped in. Now he moves into the batter's box. Nagelson short lead at first base.
- 2:18:50Only one step right now. That's all he takes. There's the set. Here's the pitch. There he goes.
- 2:18:55Pitch is hung on. Lofted down the right field line. Digging back for Cater and foul territory and Cater's got it.
- 2:19:06Go away. It will bring up Cesar Gutierrez.
- 2:19:19Yankees leading 6-5 here in the top half of the seventh inning. Cesar Gutierrez is one for three.
- 2:19:27Lied to right, singled to center, and ground it out to third.
- 2:19:41McDaniel looks down the lane to give. There's the set. And the pitch.
- 2:19:48And a foul off the end of the bat, end of the mezzanine on the first base side.
- 2:20:04Yankees six runs, seven hits. Detroit five runs, seven hits. Detroit one, the opener, two to one.
- 2:20:13McDaniel to the belt. Goal one delivery. Line foul again and again back in the mezzanine.
- 2:20:19Just about the same spot, maybe a little deeper.
- 2:20:25Double off and two strikes to Cesar Gutierrez.
- 2:20:44Oh and two-pitch. Get off the end of the bat on the ground and second.
- 2:20:48Marsh clock digs it up, throws to first just in time. He's out. A close play at first base.
- 2:20:57No runs, a base hit. There were no errors. A walk and a man left.
- 2:21:01At the end of the top of the seventh, the Yankees six and the Tigers five.
- 2:21:20We go to the bottom half of the seventh inning. The fans are stretching their legs here in the seventh inning stretch of the second game of the doubleheaders.
- 2:21:29Jake Gibbs will be the leadoff hitter for the Yankees.
- 2:21:32Bob Gammir back over from television.
- 2:21:36He'll sit in with us for the rest of this ballgame.
- 2:21:39In some second game, I don't know, these people like pitches to. It's pretty hard to say that first game could be better than the second one Frank.
- 2:21:45Oh no, there's been a lot of action in this one. A lot of scoring.
- 2:21:49Wild play as here's the pitch to Gibbs. High and tight and he sits down.
- 2:22:07One ball and no strikes to Jake. The wind up by Patterson the pitch. Swing and a miss. Strike wide. Count evens one and one.
- 2:22:26One one pitch coming. Gibbs checks his swing and takes out. It's now called strike two by John Rice. Ball and two strikes to Jake.
- 2:22:38Grant and I had a twenty two thousand four hundred and thirty four here at Yankee Stadium.
- 2:22:49One two pitch. Get in the air out of the right field. Fairly deep but not deep enough to be out. Waiting for it is Nagelson and he makes the catch.
- 2:23:02Bill Gibbs is retired. One down and Bobby Mercer steps in. Bobby Hummert in the fifth inning to tie the ballgame up.
- 2:23:18Mercer had a fly ball deep to left field and a bounce off the glove of Ike Brown and into the seat.
- 2:23:26He takes a strike. It was Mercer's 17th home run of the year and the first time I can ever recall seeing a ball bounce out of the fielder's glove and out of the ballpark for a home run.
- 2:23:39Bill Rosito has been around this game for what twenty seven years in the major leagues as a player and a broadcaster and a few years before that in the minors and he said he could never recall seeing it happen.
- 2:23:49Pitch to Mercer. Inside fastball spins him back. One and one.
- 2:23:58It looks like I used to always say as a kid here this is one park where continuously you could see a four base error. Now they didn't score it that way but actually it could have been. It would have had a very bad mad Bobby Mercer on their hands.
- 2:24:12There's ball two outside to Mercer. I did see a four base error in the minor leagues. Really? In the international league? No it was really a line drive.
- 2:24:26The outfielder didn't get it. Went off his glove, hit the wall, bounced around. The man who hit it went all the way around and scored. Pitch is inside spins Mercer back ball three and three and one.
- 2:24:44First of all they had quite a conference on scoring it. First of all they called it a triple and an error. Then they made it a double and a two base error. Finally they made it a single and a three base error.
- 2:24:56Mercer hits one out into left field again. Meltzer Phil floats back with this one still going back and makes the catch over his head.
- 2:25:05And finally after much consultation they scored it an error all the way and that was the only four base error I've ever seen. Mercer retired two down.
- 2:25:19Now Roy White. White put the Yankees in the lead with a three run homer in the first inning. Popped up in the third and walked in the fifth.
- 2:25:30The second game is Seesaw back and forth. White check swing grounded back to the mound. Spotted by Patterson he picks up throws the first out by a half a step and the side is retired.
- 2:25:43The Yankees go three up three down nothing across and at the end of seven the score is New York six and Detroit five.
- 2:25:54This will go with a pinch hitter for Patterson. It's going to be Dick McAuliffe. McAuliffe played second base in the first game and went 0 for 4 with a walk.
- 2:26:05He's got the left hand on it.
- 2:26:29The Yankees as we mentioned earlier a little bit shorthanded without Willie Horton and Ken Sokowitz. Horton with an ankle injury. Sokowitz with a leg injury.
- 2:26:40Now McAuliffe steps in the pitch to him from McDaniel is low ball one. One ball and no strikes.
- 2:26:52Let's fly. Strike for the fastball one on one. We talk a lot about Lindy's fourth ball but Lindy feels his big pitch is the fastball.
- 2:27:03The forkball makes it even better he says. The hitter has to think about the forkball.
- 2:27:10There's a fly ball that deep to right center. Back there though waiting for it is Bluffery and he's got it.
- 2:27:18Way back on the running track in front of the auxiliary scoreboard and McAuliffe is retired.
- 2:27:26One down and Dalton Jones the batter and there have been some long fly balls in this ballgame.
- 2:27:51Ball one to Dalton Jones. Jones Hummert leading off the first inning.
- 2:27:58Many walked, flied to right and struck out. He hits a high fly ball again to right center field.
- 2:28:03This time it's Mercer over from center in front of the scoreboard and he's got it.
- 2:28:13Let's check him back. The Yankees did not make a put out at first base until the fourth inning.
- 2:28:21I don't believe if I read my scorecard correctly.
- 2:28:28There have been only six and one of those was a pop up.
- 2:28:38Mickey Stanley the batter. Two for three and he takes low ball one.
- 2:28:51Yankees leading at six five. The wind up and the pitch is swung on and missed strike one. A ball and a strike.
- 2:29:05Lindley McDaniel the fourth pitcher used by the Yankees. Stan Bonson started. Ben Hamilton, Blankowski and now McDaniel.
- 2:29:14One one pitch coming. Here it went right back through the box and out over second in the center field.
- 2:29:19Base hit for Stanley and Stanley has had a hot bat this evening.
- 2:29:24Three hits in this game. He had two in the opener.
- 2:29:27So he is now five. Four let's see. Nine.
- 2:29:39It brings up Jim Northrup. In the sixth inning batting for Ike Brown. Northrup had a drive to deep left center field.
- 2:29:47It went oh four hundred and twenty feet anyway and Roy White made the catch.
- 2:29:52Fell down somersaulted and held on to it. Northrup left hand batter swings and misses strike one.
- 2:29:59He wants John Rice to take a look at the baseball.
- 2:30:07And the ball comes out of play so Northrup saw something on it.
- 2:30:11It's always amazing to me how these hitters standing up there will see that little smudge on the baseball.
- 2:30:15As far as it's thrown up there to the plate.
- 2:30:25Stanley leads at first. McDaniel's pitch to Northrup bowled back toward the upper deck.
- 2:30:37I think he's trying to gain a split. Lost the first game 2 to 1 leading them this one 6 to 5.
- 2:30:510 and 2 the count to Northrup. McDaniel's pitch.
- 2:30:57He bowled it away again. Reached out for it. Just got the tip end of the bat on it.
- 2:31:04And he came back to the upper deck on the third base side.
- 2:31:10Norm Cash is on deck.
- 2:31:16We got the guys from the New York Military Academy at Cornwall on the Hudson with us tonight.
- 2:31:22Happy to have them.
- 2:31:24There's a ground ball back to McDaniel. He's got it. Makes his play to first base and plenty of time to retire Northrup and the side.
- 2:31:32No runs at base yet. There are no errors and the man is left at the end of the top half of the eighth inning.
- 2:31:37The score, New York 6 and Detroit 5.
- 2:31:43Dr. Schling speaking.
- 2:31:45Doctor, I can't see you today doctor because my car isn't breathing right.
- 2:31:50Your car isn't breathing right. Leonard we have been through these reaction formations before.
- 2:31:55If you don't want to come, don't come. But please none of these crazy, excuse me I didn't mean that, these silly excuses.
- 2:32:01Doctor this is no excuse. Cars breathe.
- 2:32:05I understand how you feel. If someone tells you that their car isn't breathing right, they're every bit as sane as you and I.
- 2:32:13Cars do breathe. At Atlantic we make a new gasoline, Arco Supreme gasoline, that helps your car breathe in easy to breathe out cleaner.
- 2:32:23Arco Supreme helps prevent deposits from clogging the carburetor, air intake valves, and anti-pollution valve of your car.
- 2:32:32So your car gets better mileage and produces less unburned hydrocarbons to pollute the air.
- 2:32:38New Arco Supreme gasoline, at your Atlantic dealer now.
- 2:32:43Hi Bob, I'm here, the star of the bullpen for Detroit, Tom Tillerman comes on the pitch.
- 2:32:48And as Tillerman takes his warm up throws, why don't you slip in here and tell the folks about him and carry him through the rest of this ballgame.
- 2:32:56Well good thanks. Tillerman is coming on for his 42nd ballgame, which reckons his 4 wins and 3 losses, and his earned run average is 4.09.
- 2:33:04The big contribution that he has made to this staff is the fact that he has 18 saves. He has saved 18 ballgames.
- 2:33:12And that puts him by himself, whereas on the Yankees, Lindy McDaniel and Jack Aker both have a lot of saves.
- 2:33:18He has 18 in the closest man to him. John Hiller has 3.
- 2:33:23The Yankees on the other hand, the save department, it's been pretty even, in fact dead even. 14 for McDaniel and 14 for Jack Aker.
- 2:33:32Steve Hamilton also has 3.
- 2:33:35Danny Kader will be leading it off as we go into the bottom half of the 8th inning.
- 2:33:44This game has had a little bit of everything. The Yankees lead it 6 to 5, and as it stands now the key play, the one that Mercer hit the left field.
- 2:33:53And Ike Brown got his glove in the ball, the ball hit out of his glove and bounded up into the seat for a home run.
- 2:34:00Kader to the batter, the pitch. Curve is in there, strike one from Tillerman. No balls and one strike.
- 2:34:10All in one to Kader. The pitch. Danny swings and Mercer is going to. Kader does not stop this game.
- 2:34:18He went in as a pinch hitter for Pete Ward when the left-handed pitcher John Hiller came in.
- 2:34:23No balls and two strikes.
- 2:34:29Tillerman's pitch is rolling away and it's 1 and 2.
- 2:34:40Been a long night of baseball and excitement at the stadium. Here it comes, here it goes, about to round over the mound.
- 2:34:47Out towards shortstop Gideon's gloves, it's a throw, in time and there's one out.
- 2:34:52Right now on Yankee baseball we pause for station identification.
- 2:34:57This is Harry Downey bringing the Upside Downey game your way, weekdays 10 to 3 here on the Fresh Air Sound of Radio 81, WGY's Connected E.
- 2:35:10One out and it brings up Leffrey who has flat out three times in the ball again.
- 2:35:18The pitch occurred, hit in the air over third base, maybe dropping in there it is, it's a base hit down the left-field line.
- 2:35:24Chasing the ball to shortstop Vidiera as he picks it up but Leffrey is in standing a second with a double.
- 2:35:34And that'll be a night for Coach Leffrey, Jimmy Lytle is coming out of the Yankee dugout and he'll be pinch running for Coach Leffrey.
- 2:35:45So Lytle is the pinch runner with one out in the ninth inning.
- 2:35:52And Jerry Kenny will be the batter.
- 2:36:04Last year at Detroit, Zimmerman had a record of four and three, they brought him up towards the end of the season.
- 2:36:10And the first game he ever pitched in the Major Leagues was right here at Yankee Stadium.
- 2:36:15And it was the first of five successive scoreless relief appearances.
- 2:36:21And he's out of the batter's box.
- 2:36:25He's back on June the 18th of last year.
- 2:36:31To the bell, Bill Zimmerman.
- 2:36:34The pitch to Kenny, he swings it at the high bounder over the box again.
- 2:36:37Over to Gettit Gutierrez, he has it to throw out at first.
- 2:36:41And again the Yankees are going to play and the catch took his foot off the bag.
- 2:36:46That's the second time they've played that.
- 2:36:50And Jerry Kenny is arguing with not his spring foot and Ralph Hark has to join the play.
- 2:36:55He wants to keep Kenny away.
- 2:36:58That is the second time tonight.
- 2:37:00Here comes Mayo Smith out.
- 2:37:02I don't know what he's going to argue about.
- 2:37:06They're going to show that again on the TV playback here.
- 2:37:09I'll tell you, I know they allow a little leeway for the first baseman.
- 2:37:15But Norm Cash has gotten away with it twice and it's a good play if you do it.
- 2:37:20Awful how did they catch?
- 2:37:23Because nobody wants to keep his foot on the bag.
- 2:37:26Let's face it, because he could get spiked.
- 2:37:28So normally if you just touch it, in a split second they'll give it to you.
- 2:37:32But he stretched it a little.
- 2:37:34Two outs for the Yankees.
- 2:37:37Over at third base is Jimmy Lionel, the pinch runner.
- 2:37:40Mayo Smith has just gone to talk to Zimmerman about what to do with Gene Michael.
- 2:37:44Gene Michael is the number eight hitter.
- 2:37:47And with Linda McDaniel, the next gauge will batter.
- 2:37:49Chances are they'll give him a free base on balls here.
- 2:37:53But let's wait and see.
- 2:38:03Price is coming back and he's getting down on the crouch.
- 2:38:12So it looks as if they're going to pitch to Gene Michael with two outs and a run around third.
- 2:38:17First pitch to Gene.
- 2:38:19On the corner strike, no balls and one strike.
- 2:38:23Linda McDaniel is on deck.
- 2:38:29Both teams today have hit the Yankees six, the Tigers five.
- 2:38:32Tigers won the opener two to one.
- 2:38:36Pitch is low and it's one and one.
- 2:38:38Baltimore and Cleveland have split.
- 2:38:40Cleveland the first game, four to nothing.
- 2:38:42Baltimore the second game, seven to one.
- 2:38:45So if the Yankees win this, it's a Mexican standoff.
- 2:38:50One and one to Michael.
- 2:38:52Zimmerman throws.
- 2:38:53Michael swings foul ball third base side off the railing and the count's one and two.
- 2:39:02As quiet a game as the first game was with no Yankee hits after the fourth inning and no runs for anybody after the fifth.
- 2:39:09This one has been jam packed.
- 2:39:11From the leadoff man, Dalton Jones' home run right to this point.
- 2:39:15Yankees lead six to five at the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:39:17It's one and two to Gene Michael.
- 2:39:20Lytle off third.
- 2:39:22Zimmerman is stretching.
- 2:39:23He isn't going on any wind-ups.
- 2:39:26Now he goes to his motion to the belt.
- 2:39:28The pitch, Michael swings.
- 2:39:29Blinds right base head up the middle.
- 2:39:32In the start comes Lytle and the Yankees lead seven to five.
- 2:39:37And now the pitcher, Lindy McDaniel, is two outs in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:39:53So the Yankees get McDaniel an insurance run as Lindy steps in.
- 2:40:01First pitch to him is low and inside for ball one.
- 2:40:06McDaniel's batting average is 111.
- 2:40:15Zimmerman checks Michael.
- 2:40:16The pitch, McDaniel swings and misses it, and he really missed.
- 2:40:19One ball and a run strike.
- 2:40:23Yankees have had two home runs, one a long line drive deep into the seats by Roy Weiss,
- 2:40:29and the other one, who drives that most of the hits, went out of the right, grounds, drove, and into the seat.
- 2:40:36Curve is over.
- 2:40:37Strike two is one and two.
- 2:40:40That was a big blow for the Yankees because they tied it up in the bottom of the fifth at five-five.
- 2:40:48And the pitch.
- 2:40:49Line drive, base hit for Lindy McDaniel in the center field.
- 2:40:52Ball being fielded by Stanley.
- 2:40:54Rooms it in most of the way.
- 2:40:56First pitch is a second, and McDaniel gets a base hit.
- 2:41:04First and second for the Yankees and two out.
- 2:41:08So the Yankees are treating Zimmerman rather roughly here on the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:41:14Although roughly hitting with a blue fillet.
- 2:41:17Michael and McDaniel are followed with singles.
- 2:41:20The Yankees lead it seven to five.
- 2:41:27Harv Park has had one hit, but it was a big double.
- 2:41:29He swings it, he fires it, strike one.
- 2:41:32His double, like Bluffer's, was not that hard hit, but it was a big hit in the ball game.
- 2:41:38And the Yankees trailing five to three.
- 2:41:41Hiller had retired seven in a row, and he popped it into short right field.
- 2:41:44And when Jones knocked up, kicked it away, he went for two.
- 2:41:48Pitch is outside low at one and one.
- 2:41:51One ball and one strike.
- 2:41:55So the Yankees looking for a split, and they'll play the rubber game tomorrow.
- 2:42:00The stretch, the pitch, crack, take, strike two, it's called a one and two.
- 2:42:19Seven to five Yankees, bottom half of the eighth inning.
- 2:42:24Zimmerman goes to the bell, checks the runners.
- 2:42:26He delivers, swinging a little bounce of foul over towards the Yankee dugout.
- 2:42:30The count holds at one ball and two strikes.
- 2:42:36Zimmerman is 29 years old, he's 6'4", 210 pounds.
- 2:42:41He's a graduate of Southern Illinois University.
- 2:42:49Big right hand to deliver, Clark swings and pops a foul, and out of play.
- 2:42:53Third base side, well, comes down into the lower deck.
- 2:43:09One ball and two strikes to Harris Park.
- 2:43:15The stretch, and now stepping off is Zimmerman.
- 2:43:19Clark stays right in there.
- 2:43:21Zimmerman gets back on the rubber.
- 2:43:23He delivers, Clark swings and fouls it back behind the plate on the ground.
- 2:43:27The count holds at one and two.
- 2:43:32The National League, the Cardinals lead the Mets 3-0 at the end of four.
- 2:43:39Pittsburgh is in the process of winning a double header.
- 2:43:41They beat the Phillies 4-0, they're leading the Nightshifts 6-2.
- 2:43:45They went into today with a one game lead in that Eastern Division.
- 2:43:49It's one and two to clock.
- 2:43:51Here it comes, and there it goes, a high pop of this foul outside of first.
- 2:43:55Coming over Cas, he does not have room, it's in the stands.
- 2:44:18One and two to clock.
- 2:44:20Here's the pick, swinging about for outside second baseman Jones.
- 2:44:23Gets it, flips it over to the shortstop, goodie errors and the sides retire.
- 2:44:27For the Yankees in the eighth inning, they get a run on three hits.
- 2:44:31There were no errors, and one man left.
- 2:44:33At the end of eight, it's the Yankees 7 and the Tigers 5.
- 2:44:38Well, here's the list of the places where you can purchase tickets for the big ball games coming up at Yankee Stadium.

- 2:46:07It's Saratoga, home of the crazy.
- 2:46:13Daily Double closes at 8, post-time 8.15.
- 2:46:19With 1-3 lost to and split by.
- 2:46:24McDaniel Lacash swinging on a no-strike one.
- 2:46:28Lindy can throw all he's got now on the ninth inning.
- 2:46:30This will be his third inning of relief.
- 2:46:32No balls and one strike.
- 2:46:34The pitcher of record is Benkowski, who stands to be the winner.
- 2:46:37McDaniel another save.
- 2:46:39The windup, the pitch, fourth ball misses outside and it's 1-1.
- 2:46:54McDaniel winds.
- 2:46:55He delivers outside, two balls and one strike.
- 2:47:05Doublehead is the Tigers of 1-2, lost none and split by.
- 2:47:09The pitch, swinging about the foul outside of first down the right field.
- 2:47:13Line up, two balls and two strikes.
- 2:47:23Two and two to count on catch.
- 2:47:31McDaniel ends the line up, the pitch just misses the inside corner.
- 2:47:35It's three and two.
- 2:47:37Yankees leading at seven to five, top half of the ninth inning.
- 2:47:52McDaniel winds the full count pitch high for ball four.
- 2:47:56That's a rare walk given up by Lindy McDaniel.
- 2:48:02That's Lindy's second walk of the night.
- 2:48:07And on the year only his 14th base on balls in about 83 innings.
- 2:48:18Here's Russ Nagelson and suddenly the tying run is out the plate with nobody out for the Tigers.
- 2:48:24Nagelson has one home run.
- 2:48:27Here's the stretch.
- 2:48:29McDaniel delivers.
- 2:48:30Nagelson swings and misses strike one.
- 2:48:32No balls and one strike.
- 2:48:47And the ball goes to McDaniel.
- 2:48:48The pitch, fourth ball lined out in the center field.
- 2:48:50Mason's got a long run coming on.
- 2:48:52He makes the catch.
- 2:48:53Reached down with a glove hand and came up with it and there's one out.
- 2:49:01So McDaniel gets one out with one on and Don Ward will be the batter.
- 2:49:04Ward's single in the first inning.
- 2:49:06Right out to deep left field with the bases loaded in the second.
- 2:49:10Popped up in the fourth and flat out to left field in the seventh inning.
- 2:49:19One out and Ward's the batter.
- 2:49:23Ward has five home runs.
- 2:49:32The pitch is high for ball on. One ball and no strikes.
- 2:49:42One and out of the count.
- 2:49:46The stretch.
- 2:49:48The pitch to Ward. He swings.
- 2:49:50Line drives it out to right field.
- 2:49:52Lytle and a strike.
- 2:49:53Makes the catch.
- 2:49:54Oh, he's got two outs and back to first base.
- 2:49:58Well, it's a two star line drives off, Lindy, but they've been big outs.
- 2:50:03And let's see who the batter will be.
- 2:50:06Jim Price is due to bat.
- 2:50:09Could be Bill Frehand.
- 2:50:14Now, the tail line hasn't been in the game yet.
- 2:50:17It's Bill Frehand who'll be doing the pinchheading.
- 2:50:27Now, Linda McDaniels down to the last out.
- 2:50:31I remember one night in Detroit, Frehand on the bottom of the ninth, won the ball again for the Tigers with a long home run.
- 2:50:40Frehand hasn't hit for a high percentage, but he's been a home run hitter.
- 2:50:46Frehand has 15 home runs and a batting average of 232.
- 2:51:06Frehand steps in. Yankees aren't going to worry about cash over there on his first. Nobody's going to hold him close.
- 2:51:20All right, Frehand in the batter's box. He'll be swinging for all his work.
- 2:51:24The stretch by McDaniel.
- 2:51:26The pitch. Frehand takes strike once for all. No balls and one strike.
- 2:51:33Yankees seven, the Tigers five, we're on the top of the ninth. Tigers won the opener two to one.
- 2:51:46As the stretch by McDaniel, Linda kicks the liver, swinging about the head wide a third.
- 2:51:51Kenny up at the ball, goes to short. Wait a second, the ball game's over.
- 2:51:55Kenny to half clock and the game is over. In the ninth inning, no runs, no hits, no errors.
- 2:52:00One man left. For a final score, the Yankees get a split. The Yankees seven, the Tigers five.
- 2:52:06The big, big changes to the big, big A. The big, big changes to the big, big A. The big changes to A-Mart's stores.
- 2:52:32And this week, beef prices are low, low at A-Mart, A&P's discount food stores.
- 2:52:36Super-right quality sirloin steaks, a dollar-eight-a-pound.
- 2:52:39Imagine a dollar-eight-a-pound for A-Mart's grain-fed steer beef.
- 2:52:43Guaranteed delicious or money-backed. Stock up for indoor meals, for the charcoal grill.
- 2:52:48Sirloin steaks, a dollar-eight-a-pound at A-Mart.
- 2:52:51To go with your steak, get Bird's Eye Tasty Fries, potato puffs, five 10-ounce packages, one dollar.
- 2:52:57And for salads, sandwiches, A-Mart's Vine-Ripened Tomatoes, 29 cents a pound.
- 2:53:02Be smart, shop A-Mart, open nine till nine.
- 2:53:14Rod Kingkowski, as we suspected, gets the win in the night. Half his record is four and four.
