- 0:00Hello there. I'm Tyler Griffin and this is
- 0:04Scripture Study Insights by Scripture Central.
- 0:08Today, first in ephi. Chapters 6.
- 0:11Through 10, I hope that as we we now are a couple of weeks into
- 0:16this. New Year of.
- 0:18Studying the book Mormon, my sincere hope is that this.
- 0:23Year will be your best year ever.
- 0:26Of studying this incredible. Book.
- 0:29That you will increasingly find answers to your questions.
- 0:34You'll increasingly find better questions to ask and then to
- 0:37seek those answers, as well as to feel more connected with the.
- 0:41Lord through your. Personal and family and ward or
- 0:46branch. Scripture study together.
- 0:48I wanted to begin today. This is a.
- 0:50Powerful set of verses or set of chapters rather.
- 0:54I want to begin with a quote from President Russell M Nelson.
- 0:59It's a famous saying that. That you've probably.
- 1:01Heard many times before, but it's extremely.
- 1:04Applicable to what? We're going to talk about today,
- 1:07he said. The.
- 1:08Joy, we feel, has little to do with the.
- 1:12Circumstances of our. Lives.
- 1:14And everything to do with the. Focus of our lives.
- 1:20So the thing I want. To to 0.
- 1:24In on today in our. Scripture study is.
- 1:28To find ways. To better focus our.
- 1:31Attention on the. Lord Jesus Christ.
- 1:37Not. Just to see.
- 1:39Him as a being that exists up in heaven, or that existed in
- 1:44antiquity, but. To be able to.
- 1:47Focus on him in a way that we can see and recognize and sense.
- 1:53His characteristic traits, his attributes, his perfected
- 2:00capacities, that we're all. Striving to become more like so
- 2:03as we dive into our scriptures, let's begin in.
- 2:06Chapter 6. In verse four, what you'll see
- 2:09is Nephi gives us a reason. For why he's.
- 2:14Going to this Great. Effort to record.
- 2:16His words on metal. Plates verse four for the.
- 2:20Fullness of mining intent is that I may persuade men to come
- 2:27unto the God of Abraham and the God.
- 2:29Of Isaac. And the God.
- 2:31Of Jacob. And be saved, There's no
- 2:34question where Nephi's focus. Is he's focused?
- 2:38On Jehovah or. For us, the Christ.
- 2:43And then in verse. Five, he says.
- 2:45Wherefore the things which are pleasing unto the.
- 2:47World I. Do not write but the things
- 2:51which are pleasing unto God, and unto those who are not.
- 2:54Of the world. I love that.
- 2:57Because here's Nephi saying. His focus the.
- 3:00Fullness of his intent is to point us.
- 3:04To Christ, to God. So that we can come unto him to
- 3:08be saved. And then he says, I'm not going
- 3:11to give you the things of the. World.
- 3:15He's not focused horizontally trying to get the the accolades.
- 3:21Or the the praise of the world. He's focused 100% on.
- 3:26What does God? Want.
- 3:29Which now brings us to chapter seven, another example of
- 3:32looking at focal points. What are people?
- 3:35Looking at what are they desiring, what what drives then
- 3:39their behaviors and their actions and their beliefs.
- 3:43They're sent back to Jerusalem again, the boys this time.
- 3:47To speak with. Ishmael and his family to come
- 3:52and join them. Look at verse 4.
- 3:54It came to pass that we went up unto the House of Ishmael, and
- 3:57we did gain favor in the sight of Ishmael, insomuch that we did
- 4:01speak unto him. The words of the Lord.
- 4:07You'll notice they're focusing on.
- 4:11What does Christ? Want what?
- 4:13What? Is what is the Lord's desire
- 4:15for. Ishmael's family not giving them
- 4:18all of the worldly reasons why it's a good idea for them to
- 4:21walk away from their house and there any precious things that
- 4:24they have and come out on this journey out in the wilderness,
- 4:28they're not focused on any of that.
- 4:30They're. Focused on the Lord and the.
- 4:32Result verse 5. It came to pass that the.
- 4:34Lord. Did soften the heart of Ishmael
- 4:38and also. His household.
- 4:40Insomuch that they took their journey with us down into the
- 4:43wilderness to the tent of our Father.
- 4:45So it's the. Lord, who does?
- 4:47The softening of the heart along the way.
- 4:50You get the brothers. In verse seven it came to pass.
- 4:54That they rebelled. And they were.
- 4:57Desirous to. Return unto the land of
- 5:00Jerusalem. So at this point, Lehmann and
- 5:03Lemuel and some of the family of Ishmael, they're not focused on
- 5:06What does God want for my? Life.
- 5:09They're focused. On what do I want?
- 5:12What will feel the best? For me, what is the most
- 5:14convenient for me and that is the.
- 5:17Full focal. Point for them.
- 5:19It's not on the Lord. Consequently, they want to go
- 5:22back to Jerusalem. So the rest.
- 5:24Of Chapter 7 is Nephi talking with them, reminding them of
- 5:29what God has done and what they ought to be focusing on.
- 5:34And by the time you get to the end, they're giving thanks to
- 5:37the Lord their God, and offering sacrifices and burnt offerings
- 5:40unto him. So they're repenting.
- 5:43Which now brings us to Chapter 8, that great vision that comes
- 5:47in the dream of Lehigh. So there are a million ways that
- 5:53you can study this dream and because it's so symbolically.
- 5:57Layered. You can find great meaning
- 6:01approaching this chapter. From a.
- 6:03Variety of angles and they're all going to benefit you to 1°
- 6:07or another. The one thing I wanted to
- 6:10mention as you. Prepare to study or if you.
- 6:15Ponder. This chapter further.
- 6:18Is to look. At each object.
- 6:20In this dream of Lehigh and analyze.
- 6:24What does it? Teach you about.
- 6:27Who Christ is because every good object.
- 6:31In this dream, if you let, it can become a lens through which
- 6:36you can better focus on and recognize the Lord.
- 6:42Jesus. Christ and not just recognize
- 6:43His existence again, but better recognize what kind of a being
- 6:48He is and how. He how he.
- 6:51Acts and we want to become more like him, so it gives.
- 6:56Us a better. Target to aim for.
- 6:59As his disciples. Moving forward to be able to
- 7:02implement more of those. Christ like attributes.
- 7:05And attitudes and behaviors into our own life so that they can
- 7:09become increasingly more a part of our own character as we
- 7:13become more fully converted unto him.
- 7:16Through the process. Of time.
- 7:19So realize. That in the in the dream it's
- 7:23not. Just great symbolic objects.
- 7:28They're also. Some detracting symbolic.
- 7:31Objects. Things that would.
- 7:33Seek to pull your focus away from Jesus Christ.
- 7:37Things that would. Try to thwart your progress
- 7:41towards. Becoming more like God and so.
- 7:44You get this. Beautiful contrast on the page.
- 7:48And if you're teaching, either in the home or in church, it
- 7:53would be interesting to have your children or your students
- 7:56to be able to identify whether an object is good and point you
- 8:01to Christ. Or whether it's.
- 8:02A. A negative object that would.
- 8:05Be a type. Or a shadow, even, of what the
- 8:08devil is trying to do to us. And some of these.
- 8:10Objects. That might be in the middle that
- 8:13it depends on how people interact with them, whether or
- 8:16not. They're a Christ like object for
- 8:20you or. A detracting.
- 8:22Object for you. Because some things aren't
- 8:24inherently. Good or evil it?
- 8:26Depends entirely on how you respond to them.
- 8:29So let's begin in verse. Four, he says.
- 8:32The thought I saw in my dream a dark and.
- 8:36Dreary wilderness, So. As we consider is it a?
- 8:42Good or a Christ like object? Or is it a bad object that is?
- 8:51Thwarting our progress or getting in the way of us.
- 8:54Coming unto Christ, some of you might read that verse four and
- 8:58say, well, the dark and dreary wilderness.
- 9:00Has to be bad because dark. And Dreary would keep us from
- 9:06coming. To Christ.
- 9:08For me, again, everybody can interpret.
- 9:12This however they like. But for me, I like putting the
- 9:15dark and dreary wilderness right in the middle of the tube.
- 9:18Because. It depends on how you interact
- 9:21with it. Sometimes a dark and dreary
- 9:24wilderness of going. Through a trial or a struggle or
- 9:29a. Long drawn out.
- 9:31Series of questions that you have that that you're.
- 9:34Living in the dark, but you're having to move forward in faith
- 9:37anyway. Some of those dark and dreary
- 9:40wildernesses of my own life have been the most productive and the
- 9:44most. Fruitful periods.
- 9:46Of my life when I haven't been living on a mountain.
- 9:49Peak of Revelation, but rather walking.
- 9:53Or rather. Slogging at times.
- 9:56Through the valley of the shadow of Death.
- 9:59Trying to figure things out and to hold on with the fingernails
- 10:03of faith. As as I trust the Lord.
- 10:07In that darkness, which is what I see going on here in Lehigh's.
- 10:11Case because the. Very Next thing that it mentions
- 10:14is verse five came to pass that I saw a man and he was dressed
- 10:18in a white robe. Now that man could represent
- 10:22many things for different people at different times in different
- 10:25situations, but for me, the overarching view of this man
- 10:30symbolically would be yet another example of a symbol
- 10:36pointing me. To Jesus Christ.
- 10:38This idea? That when I'm in a dark and
- 10:40dreary wilderness, Heavenly Father wants to make sure that
- 10:45those who have entered into a covenant with him.
- 10:48Are. Experiencing this special kind
- 10:50of love that President Nelson has talked about has said that
- 10:55we would have even a traveling companion.
- 10:58And in my mind, this man in the white robe is yet another
- 11:01symbol. Of Jesus Christ.
- 11:02Himself saying? I'll walk with you because you
- 11:06have to walk this path. To get from point A to point Z.
- 11:11But I'm going to make sure you don't walk it alone and then you
- 11:15get to the. Large and spacious.
- 11:16Field and then you get to verse 10, The tree.
- 11:20The fruit. And it's desirable to make one
- 11:23happy. All of these things, the tree.
- 11:26The fruit. They're all symbols.
- 11:28Of Jesus. Christ and different.
- 11:30Attributes of the. Kind of being that he is showing
- 11:34us this perfect example of how we can live and you'll notice.
- 11:39As Lehigh partakes of that fruit.
- 11:41His description in verse 12 it filled.
- 11:44My soul, with exceedingly great joy, he recognizes it for what
- 11:50it is. It's not just a fruit tree.
- 11:53It represents Jesus Christ. And when we partake of the.
- 11:56Fruits of Jesus Christ. 'S infinite atonement and in
- 12:00our. Life today that.
- 12:02Can even happen. Very literally every.
- 12:04Sunday, when we partake of the sacrament, is it filling us with
- 12:09exceedingly? Great joy.
- 12:11Or are we just eating a piece of?
- 12:13Bread and drinking a cup. Of water.
- 12:16Are we missing the point because we're looking at the symbol
- 12:20rather than what the symbol represents?
- 12:23The Lord Jesus Christ. Now in contrast to that.
- 12:27Look at verse. 13 As I cast my eyes round about the perhaps I
- 12:31might discover my family also. I beheld a river of water.
- 12:35And he doesn't recognize that this.
- 12:37River of water is filthy water. It's Nephi's vision later on.
- 12:42Where he describes. The the filthiness of that water
- 12:45and how it represents the depths and the bitterness.
- 12:49Of. Sin and of hell so.
- 12:53There's this river. That would be in opposition to
- 12:56the path. Notice in verse 19 he describes
- 13:00a little more about that. I beheld a rod of iron and it
- 13:04extended along the bank. Of the river.
- 13:08And LED to the. Tree by which I stood.
- 13:10Now let's pause and think about what we know and what we don't
- 13:13know. We know that the iron rod, this
- 13:18rod of iron extends along the bank.
- 13:22Of the river. But you also know that those who
- 13:25are on the straight and narrow path, verse 20 I.
- 13:29Also beheld a. Straight and narrow path which
- 13:32came along by the rod of iron even to the tree by.
- 13:35Which I stood. So what you have is you have
- 13:40this river of water. You have an iron rod that
- 13:46extends along the Bank of the river, and then you have a path
- 13:50on the other side of this flowing.
- 13:54River of water so you have. Something that represents the
- 14:02bitterness in the depths. Of hell, right?
- 14:04Next to something that represents the straightener,
- 14:08the. Straightener path that.
- 14:09Represents our covenant path, our our ability to connect with
- 14:12God and to return to to heaven, to to the presence of God, and
- 14:18to come unto Christ more fully. And they're side by side.
- 14:22And you've got the rod of iron on the Bank of.
- 14:25That river. Now you can.
- 14:29You can have all kinds of fun individually or.
- 14:33With a group of people. With your family exploring
- 14:35principles of the gospel in this vision.
- 14:40But one one question I would just throw out for consideration
- 14:43would be why would? God have put his.
- 14:48Path and the rod of iron right next to even that rod of iron on
- 14:53the bank. Of this river.
- 14:56That leads to the bitterness in the depths of hell.
- 14:59Why didn't he put it? If we've got such a large and.
- 15:02Spacious filled. Why not spread things out a
- 15:04little bit and and make it a little?
- 15:06Easier for disciples of Jesus. Christ on that covenant path to
- 15:10be able to move forward without the bitterness in the depths of
- 15:13hell being. Quite so close.
- 15:15To us on our journey forward, and by asking that question,
- 15:20what I'm assuming is, is that you and I have never spent any
- 15:23time in the river that you and I are.
- 15:27Are perfect if that river. Represents sin and the reality.
- 15:32Is is. I see it as a.
- 15:35Merciful grace filled act that God would.
- 15:40Put his. Rod of iron, right on the bank.
- 15:45Of that river because God. Knew that you and I would spend
- 15:51more time than we really ought to in that river and that we
- 15:55would need help getting out of. That river.
- 15:58And what's more, it's it's much better.
- 16:02Than just a rod of iron, if you look at what?
- 16:06This symbol of that iron rod could represent in John. 14
- 16:11verse 6. When he's speaking to his.
- 16:14Apostles at the Last Supper, Jesus tells.
- 16:17Them I am the way. The truth.
- 16:21And the life No man cometh unto the Father, but by me I love
- 16:26when you when you superimpose. Those 3 words.
- 16:29Into Lehigh's dream I am the way.
- 16:33That's a lot. Like the path?
- 16:35I am the truth. That's a lot like the Iron rod.
- 16:39The Word of God, the truth. That I can hold on to.
- 16:41It's firm, steadfast, immovable. And I am the life.
- 16:46I'm the Tree of Life, brothers and sisters.
- 16:50Jesus Christ is. Symbolically represented by the
- 16:53path. The rod.
- 16:56And the. Tree all of.
- 16:57It so that if I'm in sin, I'm not reaching out for.
- 17:02Some cold hard. Iron to grab onto.
- 17:06That's just a placeholding symbol.
- 17:09I'm actually reaching out for the almighty hand of the Son of
- 17:15God, who's mighty to save and willing to forgive and to help
- 17:20me get back on the covenant path.
- 17:21Regardless of how deep in that sin I've become.
- 17:26He'll work with me, He'll help me and in the rest of this.
- 17:29Chapter you. Get all of these different
- 17:31groups of. People.
- 17:33Engaging in various. Ways.
- 17:36With this path and the rod, and then you get more opposition in
- 17:40verse 23 you get mists of darkness.
- 17:42You get in verse 26 a great and spacious building with a whole
- 17:46bunch of people pointing fingers of scorn in a spirit or an
- 17:50attitude of mocking. And I love how.
- 17:55Lehigh tells us. That we heeded them, not we
- 18:00didn't pay attention. To the detractors.
- 18:03To the people who were mocking and pointing fingers of scorn at
- 18:07him, he simply moved. Forward.
- 18:10In faith focused on Christ, which is interesting, people
- 18:16generally adopt. And adapt that which they.
- 18:21Surround themselves with the most.
- 18:24How much of our time is spent in social media listening to the?
- 18:29Voices of the world. And the experts quote UN quote.
- 18:32Of the world. Versus listening.
- 18:36To the words of the Lord through the scriptures.
- 18:38And the living prophets. We shouldn't be surprised.
- 18:42If we spend too much time focusing on the great and
- 18:44spacious building, however well-intentioned, those people
- 18:48in the building may be making fun of or trying to tell us.
- 18:52How to live our life? It shouldn't shock.
- 18:55Us if over. Time we start adopting.
- 18:58Their philosophies, Their. Attitudes and even their
- 19:02behaviors. And it shouldn't surprise us
- 19:07that if we instead choose to fill our lives.
- 19:11Our ears. Our our eyes.
- 19:14Our hearts. With divine sources.
- 19:17With our focus. Being more centered on the Lord
- 19:21Jesus Christ that over time we're going to move.
- 19:24Closer and closer to Jesus Christ.
- 19:27And making better sense of our life through the the lenses of
- 19:31His gospel and His. Attributes and characteristics
- 19:37as they slowly. Become more a part.
- 19:39Of us. So you'll you'll also see in
- 19:42here. That you have.
- 19:44Forbidden paths. You have strange roads.
- 19:47So these mists of darkness, all these things that would.
- 19:49Seek to take our focus off of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 19:54There is an opposition in all things.
- 19:56That shouldn't surprise. US The Test of mortality.
- 20:00Is how we. Respond to those oppositions as
- 20:03well as how we respond to that Clarion call.
- 20:06That the Savior gives us. To come unto him to finish the
- 20:11dream. I love.
- 20:12The group in verse 30. Because it tells.
- 20:14Us that they came forth, caught hold of the end of the rod of
- 20:18iron. They did press their way
- 20:20forward. Continually holding fast to the
- 20:23rod of iron that covenant connection with.
- 20:26Christ, it's a. Continual process.
- 20:29They're moving forward in faith. They're not driven by fear.
- 20:33They're not driven by other selfish motivations.
- 20:37They're continually holding fast to that rod as they come forth
- 20:41and then notice at the end it says they came.
- 20:44Forth they fell. Down and they partook of the.
- 20:47Fruit of the tree. This would have.
- 20:49To be a really low hanging. Tree if it's just a fruit tree,
- 20:55but if the tree is. Simply a symbolic.
- 20:58Placeholder for the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 21:02Then it would make a lot more sense that they would come
- 21:04forth, then fall down, and then. Partake of the fruit.
- 21:11That he as the. Tree of Life has to offer.
- 21:15Them. It's there at his feet, that
- 21:18they will partake of the fruit of his love.
- 21:20Of his mercy. And of his grace very.
- 21:24Similar to me sitting in a sacred meeting, or you sitting
- 21:28in a sacred meeting and having the emblems of his infinite
- 21:32atonement come by, we can either once again see them as a simple
- 21:37piece of bread and a cup. Of water or.
- 21:41Symbolically with our. Focus.
- 21:42Fixed on Jesus. Christ, look.
- 21:46Beyond the symbol of the bread and the water and actually see.
- 21:51God's love shed forth to us. In our life.
- 21:56Today. And to finish, let's jump over.
- 22:00To the very, very last. Chapter Chapter 10.
- 22:04Verse 17 here's. Nephi.
- 22:07He sat in that family home evening setting, if you will.
- 22:11He listened to Father. Lehi.
- 22:14Share the elements of his dream. Something happened inside of
- 22:18Nephi. It wasn't enough for Nephi to.
- 22:21Just take his his father's word. For it, let's see what we can
- 22:25learn from Nephi in verse 17. It came to pass that I Nephi.
- 22:31Having heard all. The words of my Father
- 22:33concerning the things which he saw in a vision, and also the
- 22:36things which he spake. By the power of the Holy Ghost.
- 22:39Which power he? Received by faith.
- 22:41On the Son of God and the Son of God was the Messiah who should
- 22:46come. Now here's what he does.
- 22:49I Nephi. Was desirous that.
- 22:52I might see and hear and know of these things by the power of the
- 22:57Holy Ghost, which is the gift of God, unto all those who
- 23:00diligently seek him as well in times of old, as in the times
- 23:04that he should manifest himself unto the children of men.
- 23:08That's my scripture study invitation to all of us that we
- 23:12don't. Just take Lehigh's word for.
- 23:15It that we sincerely seek. The Lord.
- 23:19'S inspiration and guidance in our own life to help us.
- 23:23See our. Place in these.
- 23:26Scripture stories. In these scripture symbols to
- 23:29help. Us focus our.
- 23:31Lives on the Lord. Jesus Christ.
- 23:33As we move forward and seek to emulate.
- 23:37Those attributes that we. Find and feel.
- 23:41Through our our. Deeper more.
- 23:43Devoted scripture study, especially this year.
- 23:46As we're studying the Book of Mormon in closing.
- 23:49I love the Lord. With all my.
- 23:50Heart every. Time I open these.
- 23:53Scriptures every single. Page.
- 23:56I'm looking for him and I'm looking for what he wants me to
- 24:01try to accomplish and learn and to become on.
- 24:05Every single page. So that I don't just read my
- 24:10scriptures. I use scriptures.
- 24:14As an opportunity to try to connect.
- 24:16With Christ more fully. And I leave that with you in the
- 24:20name. Of Jesus Christ.
