Ep. 354 - What Does “Retirement” Look Like for Christians? · The Living Waters Podcast

• 1:04
Speaker 1: I think someone who spends their life busy and then suddenly they retire.
• 1:07
Speaker 1: They're going to feel absolutely useless, just cast on a trash heap.
• 1:11
Speaker 1: And that's tragic when you've been laboring your whole life.
• 1:14
Speaker 1: But now, if you're a Christian, you can be a laborer for the Lord.
• 1:18
Speaker 1: And I think the key to being retired and keeping your brain and not becoming depressed and feeling useless is to be disciplined.
• 1:26
Speaker 1: Absolutely, just say I'm going to be disciplined.
• 1:29
Speaker 1: I'm going to start the day off with prayer.
• 1:30
Speaker 1: I'm going to read the Word, then I'm going to go to my fishing spot each day and look for a sinner.
• 1:35
Speaker 1: I'm going to get a dog, put sunglasses, go around the block.
• 1:37
Speaker 1: I'm going to take gospel tracks, give them out.
• 1:40
Speaker 1: I'm going to get a table and get a local Walmart and you can get permission to do this, permission to do this.
• 1:48
Speaker 1: Set up a table outside Walmart and just put free Christian books on it that people can take, evangelistic books, get them from Living in Waters, the scientific facts in the Bible, and they're totally free, and you just spend two hours in the morning doing that.
• 1:56
Speaker 1: You come back, have a snooze, say God, please give me more energy, because that's the problem when you get your 70s Every day.
• 2:01
Speaker 1: So, and I pray for wisdom and for energy, because energy is life and without that you're just going to roll over and die.
• 2:07
Speaker 1: And so, if you're disciplined and make sure you do this each day, life's going to have meaning because you're tapping into the eternal Charlie Brown.
• 2:29
  Speaker 4: Very good.
• 2:29
Speaker 1: My algebra teacher Oscar, are you making fun of me?
• 2:34
Speaker 3: Let me just say, gentlemen, that that was one of the most clever insights into the human mind ever created.
• 2:44
Speaker 3: It's like how do you capture in a sound what our brains do sometimes when people?
• 2:49
Speaker 1: people are talking right now literally right now yeah I know it's frightening in marriage when you're concentrating on something and your wife starts telling you something that you don't think is that important, but to her it is I have no problem with that until it comes at the end with a question.
• 3:08
  Speaker 1: That's when it's funny, that's when I panic.
• 3:10
  Speaker 1: You're accountable.
• 3:12
Speaker 3: Oh, it's like oh, and so what do you think?
• 3:15
Speaker 2: Are you good with that?
• 3:16
Speaker 3: Yeah, Next thing I know we bought like a jacuzzi or something You're just going to be like huh, could you rephrase the question?
• 3:22
Speaker 4: Yeah, I've done this.
• 3:30
Speaker 3: No, but remember, guys, when we used to Mark and Ray, when we used to go to the courthouse across the way and preach, and I would use that every time I'd say I know that some of you listening to this right now, all your hearing is wah, wah, wah, wah, wah, wah, and it was so cool to be able to draw on that because I think it would break the eyes and people would think, yeah, but what is it, guys, seriously, with just being able to actually tune out.
• 3:49
Speaker 3: We're sitting there, someone is talking, it is going in our ears and in our brain, but we cannot for the life of us.
• 3:55
Speaker 1: Well, it's by choice.
• 3:56
Speaker 1: We choose the subconscious speaking to us than the wife.
• 4:01
Speaker 1: I'll tell you, sue is so patient because I often say I'll let it go for a while, like 30, 40 seconds just talking and I haven't heard a word.
• 4:10
Speaker 1: It's wah, wah, wah, wah, wah, and I'll say what was that.
• 4:14
Speaker 1: And she never says I've already told you, you're not listening.
• 4:18
Speaker 1: She just starts again Because she's used to it, right?
• 4:20
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 4:20
Speaker 1: I guess so, and I do have problems when someone comes up and says I've got a question for you when I was two Story time.
• 4:30
Speaker 3: What's funny is that those of us who know you, we understand the panic that's hitting your heart and I can almost feel like what you're going through.
• 4:39
Speaker 3: I get anxious because I know someone's trying to pour their heart out to Ray and he's like do you want a name?
• 4:43
Speaker 4: I've seen it before.
• 4:44
  Speaker 4: I've seen it.
• 4:46
Speaker 2: I remember a guy Ray walking away one time and a guy Ray walking away one time and a guy looked at me and he goes.
• 4:50
Speaker 2: Is he okay, and what?
• 4:51
Speaker 3: did you say no, definitely not no, he's good, he's fine.
• 4:55
Speaker 4: Ray looks like someone's trying to buckle in a two year old when something like that happens hang on.
• 5:00
Speaker 1: Kirk said four year old.
• 5:01
Speaker 3: Oh sorry, so, ray, do take us into your mind, please it would be an empty, empty experience.
• 5:09
Speaker 3: What happens in those moments?
• 5:11
Speaker 1: Well, rachel has the same problem.
• 5:13
Speaker 1: She has it in her genes too.
• 5:14
Speaker 1: She says the same thing.
• 5:16
Speaker 1: She can feel glazed coming over her eyes.
• 5:18
Speaker 1: You can't help it, just the way you are.
• 5:20
Speaker 1: I guess it's not that I'm a genius and things are going on and I'm creating in my mind.
• 5:25
  Speaker 3: It's just selfish.
• 5:26
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's it I'm creating in my mind.
• 5:27
  Speaker 2: Because, you're selfish.
• 5:28
  Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it.
• 5:28
  Speaker 2: I think you've nailed it.
• 5:29
  Speaker 1: You've discovered it.
• 5:30
Speaker 1: All I care about is myself.
• 5:33
Speaker 3: You've got like cereal dancing in your head.
• 5:36
Speaker 2: You've got playing with Lacey, you've got.
• 5:38
  Speaker 2: That's true, yeah.
• 5:41
Speaker 3: But I do, look, I do want to become a better listener.
• 5:44
  Speaker 3: What's that?
• 5:45
  Speaker 2: Huh.
• 5:45
  Speaker 3: What?
• 5:46
  Speaker 3: Huh?
• 5:46
Speaker 3: Because it's sad that someone's pouring their heart out to you and you're not listening.
• 5:52
Speaker 3: And you're cleaning tassels on the floor.
• 5:53
Speaker 3: Oh, bringing back bad memories.
• 5:56
Speaker 2: I remember there was a time when I was pouring my heart out to you.
• 5:58
Speaker 2: As I look over at you, you look up at the clock.
• 6:02
Speaker 2: No, it's time to rewind.
• 6:04
Speaker 2: I hit you up about that.
• 6:05
  Speaker 2: I sure think you're right.
• 6:07
  Speaker 1: I've had that.
• 6:08
Speaker 1: When I'm witnessing to people, I see them glance at their watch and I see you're not listening, are you?
• 6:12
Speaker 1: You're looking at your watch.
• 6:13
Speaker 1: You want to get away, but I'm telling you I can find everlasting life.
• 6:15
  Speaker 1: It's crazy.
• 6:17
Speaker 2: I hear you often say you don't want to miss this.
• 6:19
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's good.
• 6:21
Speaker 3: You learn over the years, don't you like to say the things that capture people's attention?
• 6:24
  Speaker 3: I'll do that.
• 6:26
Speaker 3: When I'm preaching, I'll say now, I'll pause and I say now, listen closely to this.
• 6:30
Speaker 3: And it really does.
• 6:32
Speaker 3: It causes people to perk up.
• 6:33
Speaker 3: Well, there's another way to do it.
• 6:35
Speaker 1: You just say I don't want anyone to listen to what I'm going to say.
• 6:38
  Speaker 1: It's when I bring.
• 6:39
Speaker 1: Lately I've been bringing people through the studio when we're doing tours and I turn to them and say I'd like you to kick the camera over as you go past it.
• 6:47
Speaker 1: And they go what?
• 6:52
Speaker 1: Because I say please be careful, these cameras are expensive, so don't kick it.
• 6:54
Speaker 1: No, they're not going to listen, because that's expected.
• 6:55
Speaker 1: But if you say something that says the other way, it makes them listen and be careful.
• 6:57
Speaker 1: I often say to Sue, when she's driving, please drive dangerously, because I say I drive carefully.
• 7:03
  Speaker 1: She's.
• 7:03
Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 7:04
Speaker 3: But, ray, the thing about you is you haven't learned, because someday someone's going to do it like the kid that you told to sniff the bottom of the pool.
• 7:14
Speaker 1: I didn't think he would do it Exactly.
• 7:17
Speaker 3: You're going to think someone's not going to kick the camera.
• 7:19
Speaker 4: Ray, come and tell me dude.
• 7:19
Speaker 4: I told my niece, told your niece yeah, I was talking to my niece.

• 7:37
  Speaker 4: Candies?
• 7:38
Speaker 4: Candy canes, the plastic candy canes.
• 7:40
Speaker 4: And I look at her and I go, oh, you should lick it.
• 7:42
Speaker 4: They taste really good.
• 7:44
Speaker 1: And she walks over and goes ah, my niece, You're going to get the wrong person who's?
• 7:50
Speaker 2: going to do it.

• 12:07
Speaker 3: I use the life of Joseph, genesis 39, and how Joseph dealt with temptation, and it was really well received.
• 12:14

Speaker 3: Oh, I yell and yell.
• 12:29
Speaker 3: Wait Ray, what do you do to your wife when she's yawning sometimes?
• 12:32
  Speaker 3: No, I've stopped.
• 12:34
Speaker 1: I stopped years ago after work Because a friend of mine.
• 12:36
Speaker 1: What would you do, murray Smith?
• 12:38
Speaker 1: No, you can't help it.
• 12:39
Speaker 1: When they yawn, you put your finger in their mouth.
• 12:41
Speaker 3: I do it to Kelly.
• 12:42
  Speaker 3: She hates it.
• 12:43
Speaker 3: I used to Rachel, but I stopped her.
• 12:44
Speaker 1: Sue said please don't do that.
• 12:46
Speaker 1: And that was huge for her.
• 12:47
Speaker 1: But my friend Murray Smith started doing it to his wife and she got really mad, do you still?
• 12:52
Speaker 3: pull the sheets off when you get mad.
• 12:54
Speaker 3: No, I stopped that.
• 12:54
Speaker 3: She asked if I stopped that.
• 12:55
Speaker 1: Because that's an incredible law of nature, or something in there?
• 12:58
Speaker 3: Do you still pull up your pajama pants up to your chest?
• 13:00
Speaker 3: Yes, actually, this is getting a little personal, you still sleep in a hole, still sleep in a hole.
• 13:08
Speaker 1: Who would sleep in a hole?
• 13:09
Speaker 1: That flicking of the covers is incredible.
• 13:11
Speaker 1: What was the flicking of the covers?
• 13:13
Speaker 1: You get into bed and then you've got the covers over you, over your wife, and you just go like that and a wave goes across and pulls the covers off her, right across off the bed, and so she's got no covers and you've got double covers.
• 13:25
  Speaker 1: It's a flick.
• 13:27
Speaker 1: You would do that like every night, right?
• 13:28
Speaker 3: yeah, couldn't help that department of annoyance.
• 13:33
Speaker 1: Yeah, she was really good, though she only put up with it for about 10 years every night yeah, all right, friends, don't forget.

• 13:53
Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought I was out of a job.
• 13:54
  Speaker 3: All right, friends.
• 13:56
Speaker 3: Today, what does retirement look like for the Christian?
• 14:01
Speaker 3: It doesn't Tell us Ray, why doesn't?
• 14:05
  Speaker 1: it.
• 14:05
Speaker 1: There shouldn't be any thought of retirement for the Christian.
• 14:08
Speaker 1: For the world, yeah, retire, just go over and die somewhere, walk your dog around the block.
• 14:13
Speaker 1: But for the Christian, you can go full time for the Lord now.
• 14:17
Speaker 1: All your life you've been restricted by work.
• 14:19
Speaker 1: Work's a curse God gave work as a curse Makes you sweat.
• 14:22
Speaker 1: You can be free of that and now you can serve the Lord with all your heart, full time, and all you do is set up a, get a diary, and when you go witnessing with your dog wearing sunglasses going around the block, get the person's name and write down what you said to them and pray with them or pray for them afterwards.
• 14:38
Speaker 1: There's things you can do where retirement won't come near you, and it shouldn't.
• 14:43
Speaker 1: What a stupid word.
• 14:44
  Speaker 3: Retirement.
• 14:45
Speaker 3: I'm really curious to Ray would you Retire Mint?
• 14:49
Speaker 3: I'm really curious to know.
• 14:50
Speaker 3: Would you rather be?
• 14:52
Speaker 3: Would you rather be Wait for it, pushed off a cliff like a high cliff, like you're going to die, or be placed in that white room with nothing but white walls, no doors, windows, tied to a chair wearing a white, straight jacket.
• 15:08
  Speaker 1: No internet.
• 15:08
Speaker 1: I would not want to be pushed off a cliff because I'd jump.
• 15:14
Speaker 3: You'd jump before shaking that room.
• 15:16
Speaker 3: That's how much he hates the color white.
• 15:21
Speaker 1: No, I'm terrified of doing nothing.
• 15:22
Speaker 1: I think it's a horrible thing to just vegetate.
• 15:24
Speaker 1: I really want to test that with you, though, right?
• 15:26
Speaker 1: Yeah, well, listening to you, I get near it.
• 15:32
Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know if I've met anyone who loathes the thought of retirement more than you.
• 15:38
Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I hate it, yeah.
• 15:39
Speaker 3: Okay Now, oscar, is there a place for a Christian to retire?
• 15:47
Speaker 1: No, before he dealt with us.
• 15:48
Speaker 3: Not, but not really retire.
• 15:52
Speaker 3: So maybe we can break down the difference in perspective on what the world's talking about for retirement.
• 15:59
Speaker 1: Well, what you're talking about is not retirement, it's just tirement.
• 16:02
Speaker 3: Yeah, because we don't want to do it again.
• 16:03
Speaker 3: No, yeah, because we've never tired in the first place.
• 16:06
Speaker 2: You can't retire unless you're tired.
• 16:09
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I think what you're getting at here is the retiring from vocation is one thing, which is moving into a new season of life.
• 16:18
Speaker 4: And to clarify what Ray meant earlier, I know he meant this work is a gift from the Lord to us.
• 16:25
Speaker 4: We see Adam work in the garden.
• 16:28
Speaker 1: After the fall After the fall.
• 16:30
Speaker 4: After the fall, it becomes cursed, right.
• 16:38
Speaker 4: So Adam had God glorifying work.
• 16:39
Speaker 4: We are made to make in the same way that our maker makes.
• 16:40
Speaker 4: That's not a part of the curse.
• 16:41
Speaker 4: Part of the curse is that then, attached to that is the thistles and the thorns, and if you work in a vocation, that is hard, that's a struggle.
• 16:50
Speaker 4: You feel the thistle, you feel the thorn.
• 16:53
Speaker 4: One of the beautiful things about retiring from your vocation, though, if that is in fact you, is now look at it as you get to experience work with less of the thorn, with less of the thistle, because now you're free to work unto the Lord, not just to provide for your family and to check in on a nine to five, but now you know the day you go home, after your retirement party, it's like what do you have for me, oh Lord?
• 17:21
Speaker 4: And I thought about it in four different ways.
• 17:23
  Speaker 4: Ultimately, retirement.
• 17:24
Speaker 4: You get to steward four different things.
• 17:27
Speaker 4: It's time for you to steward your time well, because you have more time than ever.
• 17:31
Speaker 4: It's time for you to steward your talent well.
• 17:34
Speaker 4: God has gifted you, and you have an opportunity to steward that talent in a new way, because you're not being held back from the responsibility of your nine to five.
• 17:43
Speaker 4: You have an opportunity to steward your treasure well.
• 17:47
Speaker 4: In retirement age we have more excess income than we had through all of our working years, and so you have an opportunity to give, to steward that treasure in an incredible way.
• 17:59
Speaker 4: And you have an opportunity to steward your testimony well.
• 18:05
Speaker 4: You've gone through so many seasons of life.
• 18:08
Speaker 4: Why not invest that in to the next generation?
• 18:12
Speaker 4: And so when you have that perspective, you retire from your revocation.
• 18:17
Speaker 4: But now you get to experience work with less thorn and less thistles because you work unto the Lord.
• 18:23
  Speaker 4: I love it.
• 18:25
  Speaker 3: Yeah, it's so do I.
• 18:28
  Speaker 1: Oscar Beautiful.
• 18:40
Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's the misnomer that a Christian can somehow take a vacation from their calling.
• 18:43
  Speaker 3: Ultimately.
• 18:44
Speaker 3: I mean, I think we have it backwards right.
• 18:45
Speaker 3: We look at work as a source of supply for our income.
• 18:51
Speaker 3: We look at marriage as a source of supply for our relational needs or our pleasure, companionship, whatever.
• 18:54
Speaker 3: We look at school as a means to expand our minds, rather than looking at all of these things as mediums through which we can love God and love people and fulfill the two greatest commandments and the great commission.
• 19:10
Speaker 3: And when you look at life that way, then you don't get this vision of lying on the beach and just soaking in the rays all the time.
• 19:20
Speaker 3: What's wrong with rays?
• 19:22
  Speaker 2: I like rays.
• 19:24
Speaker 3: Right, you understand that life has meaning and purpose for you in all cases.
• 19:29
Speaker 3: So, mark, go ahead.
• 19:33
Speaker 2: Well, oscar started off our last program talking about we find ourselves in our name and we associate our name.
• 19:44
Speaker 2: Also, you had mentioned our identity with a profession, like who are you?
• 19:51
Speaker 2: And when somebody says like who are you, or they want to get to know you, they want to know about you, your family, and they want to know about what you do for a job, right, because this is where we find our identity.
• 20:00
Speaker 2: But now we have a problem.
• 20:02
Speaker 2: Right, because we have individuals that are now retiring at 65 years old, who have found their identity in their profession.
• 20:10
  Speaker 2: That's a good point.
• 20:11
Speaker 2: And so so many people are dying right after they retire because perhaps I don't know, I'm no psychologist but they found their identity in their profession and now they're no longer doing that profession and they don't know what it's like to live life now.
• 20:27
Speaker 2: So what is a word, what do we say to those people who, for you know 60 years, have found their identity in their profession and now they're just saying I don't know what to do because I worked, you know, eight to ten hours a day, six to seven days a week, and what do you want me to do?
• 20:43
Speaker 2: You want me to go collect seashells.
• 20:45
Speaker 2: I mean, where do I go?
• 20:46
Speaker 2: And I just I made that up, by the way that's me collecting seashells.
• 20:48
Speaker 2: I mean, where do I go?
• 20:48
Speaker 3: And I made that up, by the way, that's me collecting seashells.
• 20:50
Speaker 3: Look, lord, here's my shell collection, said Piper.
• 20:54
Speaker 1: Good money and seashells.
• 20:56
Speaker 3: Oh, I thought turtle, shells, seashells, seashells.
• 21:03
Speaker 1: I think someone who spends their life busy and then suddenly they retire.
• 21:06
Speaker 1: They're going to feel absolutely useless, just cast on a trash heap.
• 21:10
Speaker 1: And that's tragic when you've been laboring your whole life.
• 21:14
Speaker 1: But now, if you're a Christian, you can be a laborer for the Lord.
• 21:17
Speaker 1: And I think the key to being retired and keeping your brain and not becoming depressed and feeling useless is to be disciplined.
• 21:25
Speaker 1: Absolutely, just say I'm going to be disciplined.
• 21:28
Speaker 1: I'm going to start the day off with prayer.
• 21:30
Speaker 1: I'm going to read the Word, then I'm going to go to my fishing spot each day and look for a sinner.
• 21:34
Speaker 1: I'm going to get a dog, put sunglasses, go around the block.
• 21:36
Speaker 1: I'm going to take gospel tracks, give them out.
• 21:38
Speaker 1: I'm going to get a table and get a local Walmart and you can get permission to do this.
• 21:43
Speaker 1: Set up a table outside Walmart and just put free Christian books on it that people can take, evangelistic books, get them from Living in Waters, the scientific facts in the Bible, and they're totally free.
• 21:52
Speaker 1: And you just spend two hours in the morning doing that.
• 21:55
Speaker 1: You come back, have a snooze, say God, please give me more energy, because that's the problem when you get your 70s Every day.
• 22:00
Speaker 1: So and I pray for wisdom and for energy, because energy is life and without that you're just going to roll over and die.
• 22:06
Speaker 1: And so if you're disciplined and make sure you do this each day, life's going to have meaning, because you're tapping into the eternal.
• 22:14
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 22:15
  Speaker 3: Go ahead Oscar.
• 22:17
Speaker 4: I was just going to say.
• 22:18
  Speaker 4: There's so many.
• 22:19
Speaker 4: What's amazing is so many great examples.
• 22:21
  Speaker 4: I've got a friend.
• 22:22
Speaker 4: You guys know him.
• 22:23
  Speaker 1: You've got a friend.
• 22:24
Speaker 4: I do just one, but him and his wife.
• 22:26
Speaker 4: They retired and now they spend three, four days a week on college campuses handing out gospel tracts.
• 22:35
Speaker 4: And I mean they could be vacationing as a matter of fact one time.
• 22:40
Speaker 4: I invited them somewhere.
• 22:40
Speaker 1: I actually missed that I was reading a text.
• 22:42
Speaker 1: What do they do?
• 22:44
Speaker 4: They spend their retirement, mike and Vivian, they spend their retirement three, four days a week just preaching the gospel on college campuses, handing out gospel tracts.
• 22:54
Speaker 1: When you say preaching, just sharing their faith, that's exactly right, michael and Melissa, melissa, what did I say Vivian?
• 23:00
Speaker 3: Viviana's our daughter, that's right, sorry.
• 23:01
Speaker 4: And Melissa, sorry, yeah.
• 23:03
Speaker 4: And I mean they spend one time.
• 23:06
Speaker 4: I invited them somewhere and it was like, oh you know, we don't wanna go because college is in session right now and we don't wanna miss the opportunity to love on these kids and share the gospel with them.
• 23:17
Speaker 4: This is how they're spending their retirement.
• 23:19
Speaker 4: I've got another friend, brian, like he retired from the police department and him and his wife.
• 23:24
Speaker 4: He says they are busier than ever at hospital beds, having people over in their homes, investing in struggling marriages.
• 23:34
Speaker 1: They're just spending those days so well doing the Lord's work and they've got something that youth haven't got.
• 23:40
Speaker 1: They've got experience, and wisdom they can pass on, so they're not useless yeah.
• 23:45
  Speaker 2: Mark go ahead.
• 23:45
Speaker 2: Paul didn't coast into glory.
• 23:48
Speaker 2: He saw it as a finish line right.
• 23:49
Speaker 2: He picked up the pace.
• 23:50
Speaker 2: I often tell my kids and I write it in almost every birthday card to my kids pick up the pace, right, I get it.
• 23:57
Speaker 2: Life is, for a lot of us, a marathon, and slow and steady wins the race.
• 24:03
Speaker 2: But just pick up the pace.
• 24:05
Speaker 2: Have you ever seen the difference between somebody who finishes first at a track meet and somebody finishes sixth?
• 24:13
  Speaker 2: Somebody finishes first.
• 24:14
Speaker 2: There's always that lunge right.
• 24:17
Speaker 2: The difference between first and second, you know first second everybody knows your name.
• 24:21
Speaker 1: I love that Sunfield, that's okay.
• 24:24
Speaker 2: Somebody finishes sixth place, though it's almost like they're coasting.
• 24:27
  Speaker 2: There's no urgency.
• 24:31
Speaker 2: But for us Christians, right, we never retire from the Great Commission.
• 24:36
Speaker 2: We never retire from doing what God has called us to do.
• 24:40
Speaker 2: For 2 Timothy 4-7, I have fought the good fight.
• 24:43
Speaker 2: I have kept the faith right.
• 24:46
Speaker 2: You will still be in the race until you see His face.
• 24:50
Speaker 2: You'll know when God is done with you.
• 24:52
Speaker 2: Right, you die, you're done.
• 24:54
Speaker 2: So God is not done with you.
• 24:56
Speaker 2: No matter what you've done, no matter who's made your bed, no matter what drug you've done, no matter how many people's lives you've wrecked, god's not done with you.
• 25:04
Speaker 2: And we know that he's not done with you because you are still alive and by virtue of the fact that you're still alive.
• 25:12
Speaker 2: And by virtue of the fact that you're still alive means that God still has a plan that he wants for you.
• 25:15
Speaker 2: So get out of bed, go to bed with purpose.
• 25:16
Speaker 2: Lay out your clothes before you go to bed so that you know exactly what you're doing.
• 25:20
Speaker 2: Lay out your schedule in advance so you wake up in the morning with a purpose.
• 25:26
Speaker 2: Today I'm doing this, tomorrow I'm doing that.
• 25:29
Speaker 2: And therefore, when you end up doing something like that, you're going to find just this exuberant joy that comes upon you because you're doing what the Lord has you to do so you can wake up in the morning with satisfaction if you make yourself wake up at 2am and do some editing from 2am to 4am.
• 25:44
Speaker 1: When you wake up in the morning you don't just wake up with purpose, you wake up with satisfaction you did something while you were asleep.
• 25:50
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I like that.
• 25:51
Speaker 3: Yeah, sleep is so stupid I edit at night in my bed, with the wall between.
• 25:56
  Speaker 4: Sue and me.
• 25:57
Speaker 4: Oh, so you still have your wall?
• 25:58
  Speaker 4: No, I don't have a wall, don't need the wall.
• 25:59
Speaker 4: Do you have a hole in the bed In my?
• 26:01
  Speaker 1: bed.
• 26:02
Speaker 1: We used to have the wall, but the wall's I can dully light on the iPad.
• 26:08
Speaker 3: But seriously, imagine just hearing just a guy on the street just randomly say this I edit at night in the hole in my bed, Except it sounds like this Yep, yep right, actually, I
• 26:25
Speaker 1: do dictate and whisper, and it works into my iPad In the night.
• 26:29
Speaker 1: Yeah, in the night.
• 26:30
Speaker 3: You know, often when you hear I give her sleeping pills.
• 26:34
Speaker 3: Often, when you hear people who retire, you'll hear some of them say they'll go back to get another job and they'll say what I needed?
• 26:43
Speaker 3: Something to do which is indicative of right.
• 26:46
Speaker 3: We're designed to create, to do, to be productive productivity, of right.
• 26:54
Speaker 3: We're designed to create, to do, to be productive productivity.
• 26:55
Speaker 3: But I'm baffled that the Christian would ever have to say that we have so much to do.
• 26:59
Speaker 3: And I think what ends up happening is there's times when I'm working from home or something I take a break, I'm watching, and then daytime television commercials come on and I want to die.
• 27:14
Speaker 3: It's like the thought of being at home no job, no, nothing to do you're just sitting watching daytime television, soap operas oh, and these commercials come on, these infomercials that are just like it.
• 27:27
Speaker 3: Seriously, to me it's almost as bad as being at a baseball game.
• 27:30
Speaker 3: I, I just want to die.
• 27:32
Speaker 4: Okay, but General Hospital is really well you know what's funny.
• 27:36
Speaker 3: As a kid I used to watch.
• 27:37
Speaker 3: General Hospital I come home from school, my mom and grandma and aunt.
• 27:40
Speaker 3: They're sitting around watching General Hospital, so I got into it.
• 27:44
Speaker 1: Guys, don't go to the commercials.
• 27:45
Speaker 1: I think we should do a podcast Five Things I Hate.
• 27:48
Speaker 1: I think we should do a podcast Five Things I Hate.
• 27:50
Speaker 1: And there are five things I you don't use the word hate.
• 27:52
Speaker 1: Some people hate it when you use the word hate, but biblically that's one of the five.
• 27:54
Speaker 1: You can use the word hate, because God uses it in Scripture, but there's certain things that we hate all of us and I think we should do a podcast talking about what we hate.
• 28:05
Speaker 2: Easy, you really hate baseball that much.
• 28:06
Speaker 2: Have you ever seen the savannah?
• 28:08
  Speaker 3: bananas games.
• 28:09
Speaker 3: Now look, I've gone to some games with some friends.
• 28:11
Speaker 3: Save it, excuse me, no, what?
• 28:13
Speaker 3: Save it when we do the program no, I say it now, I do it right now, get it done, no look I've gone to some baseball games.
• 28:22
Speaker 3: Where they're, they're um, you know, they're the boxes, the sweets, where you have food, you eat, you hang out fellowship that's fine for the rich when I'm sitting in the stadium and it's baseball, which I'm sorry.
• 28:34
Speaker 3: I know people get it.
• 28:34
Speaker 3: It's the most boring game in the universe.
• 28:36
Speaker 2: Have you seen a Savannah Banana baseball game?
• 28:38
Speaker 3: I don't need to what is that like the Globetrotters version of baseball?
• 28:41
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's great the umpire's dancing, the guys are doing flips.
• 28:57
Speaker 3: Yeah, bring it on, have these guys out there and, and there's, there's a certain sound in the stadium.
• 28:59
  Speaker 3: It's like a white noise, it's I don't know.
• 29:00
Speaker 3: It's like this hum, it's an l, and it feels like it's gonna go on forever and ever and ever.
• 29:02
  Speaker 4: Amen.
• 29:02
  Speaker 4: Just like I'm, it's an l.
• 29:02
Speaker 4: I will just say forever and ever in no other sport.
• 29:06
Speaker 4: Do you need people to stand up and stretch to make sure they don't fall asleep?
• 29:12
Speaker 3: Amen, you hate baseball too, oscar.
• 29:14
  Speaker 4: I don't get it.
• 29:15
Speaker 1: Yes, I'm with you.
• 29:16
Speaker 1: It's just a little slow, but I've watched them play with beach balls in the stand.
• 29:21
Speaker 3: Pass those balls to each other because there's nothing else to do.
• 29:24
Speaker 3: No, that's not baseball, but I'm saying that's what they do, because they're bored.
• 29:27
Speaker 3: No, oh, yeah right.
• 29:29
Speaker 4: Exactly, yeah, the wave, all that stuff comes from baseball.
• 29:31
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, but I'm just saying and eating, eating.
• 29:34
  Speaker 3: Eating.
• 29:35
Speaker 1: You know, Now look.
• 29:36
Speaker 3: Okay, world Series game.
• 29:38
Speaker 3: Okay, it's, you know, the last game, like usually, and they make these guys play like hundreds of games in a year 161?
• 29:52
  Speaker 2: Boy.
• 29:52
Speaker 2: I feel so miserable right now.
• 29:53
Speaker 1: Combining everything being painted white at a baseball game and you have to eat cilantro.
• 30:00
Speaker 2: I think $25 hot dogs and chips are really good.
• 30:03
Speaker 3: I like the eating part and talking, but that's it.
• 30:05
Speaker 3: I'm not there for the game.
• 30:06
  Speaker 1: It's very American, it's iconic.
• 30:09
Speaker 3: Take me out to the Okay so let's get practical.
• 30:14
Speaker 1: We just lost half our audience.
• 30:15
Speaker 1: By the way, I want to go in a direction.
• 30:16
Speaker 1: Sounds like a song.
• 30:17
Speaker 3: Yeah, I want to go in a direction that I think is important.
• 30:20
Speaker 3: It may surprise some and, oscar, I'd like you to actually speak to this because, in a sense, this was your world with investment and stuff like that, I think, especially for the young people listening right now, and honestly my hope is that this will change the trajectory of some who have never thought that way.
• 30:40
Speaker 3: I was in circles as a newer believer where to talk about saving for retirement was like carnal, like oh, it's so worldly, the Lord's coming back, or you don't need to think, trust the Lord, and so forth.
• 30:55
Speaker 3: But I think it's extremely spiritual to be wise and to plan for the future so that you can become independent when that time comes and you wind down your career.
• 31:06
Speaker 3: You're too old and you can't do your specific job.
• 31:09
Speaker 3: And now, as a believer, you can transition to serving the Lord.
• 31:11
Speaker 3: So talk to that, oscar, the wisdom of planning for your retirement financially.
• 31:16
Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, what's funny is because I didn't grow up in the church and I came to a saving faith in my twenties.
• 31:21
Speaker 4: I was shocked to discover that that was a trend Like in certain circles.
• 31:26
Speaker 4: It was almost faux Paul to talk about savings, which is you're right.
• 31:31
Speaker 4: I mean, to save is to be a good steward.
• 31:32
Speaker 4: Ultimately, you're investing for something.
• 31:35
Speaker 4: You're not investing to get rich.
• 31:37
Speaker 4: You're investing for the opportunity to have more freedom with your time faster.
• 31:43
Speaker 4: And I would just say this I mean, there's a lot of helpful tools and resources on saving, but you're absolutely right.
• 31:49
Speaker 4: My main thing here is start saving as soon as humanly possible, no matter how much, because it doesn't.
• 31:57
Speaker 4: You don't need to ever make a million dollars to become a millionaire.
• 32:01
Speaker 4: You just simply need to save early and save often, as in every single time you get paid, you should save.
• 32:07
Speaker 4: And you might stop and think, whoa, oscar wants me to be a millionaire.
• 32:10
Speaker 4: That sounds so carnal.
• 32:11
Speaker 4: No, ultimately you become.
• 32:15
Speaker 4: There's seasons of your life in which you're you know, you think about it like this the Lord calls us to be prophets, priests and kings.
• 32:24
Speaker 1: Oh prophet, I see what you're saying Prophet financially, oh prophet financially.
• 32:29
  Speaker 1: F-i-t.
• 32:29
Speaker 4: It's the threefold office of Christ is a calling on every single Christian.
• 32:33
Speaker 4: You are a prophet whenever you speak God's truths, whenever you proclaim the gospel God's already written truth from the scriptures.
• 32:41
Speaker 4: You're a priest anytime you love and serve in the context of your local church.
• 32:47
Speaker 4: You come alongside and pray for one another.
• 32:49
Speaker 4: Some of us don't get to exercise our kingly duties until later in life.
• 32:53
Speaker 4: The kingly duties is leading and supporting financially.
• 32:58
Speaker 4: Saving for retirement to become a millionaire is simply your way of setting yourself up to act out your kingly duty in that second phase of your life.
• 33:09
Speaker 4: Because the reality is is when you retire, you can be paid more than you were paid when you were working.
• 33:16
Speaker 4: And why does that matter?
• 33:18
Speaker 4: Because you get to be a steward of that.
• 33:20
Speaker 4: Now you have an excess in income in which you can serve the local church through both with your time and your talent, and it's you know, the emphasis that you're making is.
• 33:32
Speaker 4: It's so easy to do.
• 33:33
Speaker 4: Everyone thinks I'm not making enough money to start saving.
• 33:36
  Speaker 4: That's hogwash.
• 33:36
Speaker 4: If you're making money, you have money to save period.
• 33:40
Speaker 3: Okay, so get practical.
• 33:41
Speaker 3: Then what would you recommend to the 18, 19, 20-year-old right now, listening who's saying, okay, but how do I do that?
• 33:47
Speaker 3: I mean just put money in the bank.
• 33:48
Speaker 3: Or what's your advice on how to save properly for the future?
• 33:53
  Speaker 4: Yeah, very practically.
• 33:54
Speaker 4: If you work in an organization that has a 401k or 403b, you should look into it, because many organizations these days will do matches.
• 34:03
Speaker 4: That's free money, and so at that point I would suggest saving anywhere between 25 and 35% of every single one of your checking account.
• 34:11
Speaker 4: That might sound like a huge sacrifice now, but it will pay off in the future.
• 34:16
Speaker 4: And what's amazing about the way savings works is you think about it like this this is how easy it is to save and accumulate.
• 34:23
Speaker 4: If you save $100 of tax-free money, you tell the bank I want to take away $100 of what I make and put it away in this tax fee account.
• 34:33
Speaker 4: But because it's saved tax-free, you actually save, let's say, $135.
• 34:38
Speaker 4: Because now, instead of paying that in taxes, it goes right into your savings account.
• 34:42
Speaker 4: On top of that, if your company or organization does anywhere between a 1% and 3% match which is pretty common, that's not even that generous, very common then you're also saving that on top of that.
• 34:54
Speaker 4: So now you're saving $115, $120 every single paycheck.
• 34:58
Speaker 4: I'm using simple math here, right?
• 34:59
Speaker 4: Then, on top of that, at an 8% accumulation every single year, with compounding interest, that money accelerates over time, and so that's as simple as it is.
• 35:11
Speaker 4: The first thing you do is go to your organization and find out if they have a 401k.
• 35:16
Speaker 4: If they don't, you can still open up an IRA.
• 35:19
Speaker 4: What's great about this is that it takes away the discipline of saving.
• 35:24
Speaker 4: You save first rather than spend first, right?
• 35:27
Speaker 4: So once you get your paycheck, normally you have to decide now I'm going to save my money.
• 35:32
  Speaker 4: That's a discipline.
• 35:33
Speaker 4: You should do it either way.
• 35:35
Speaker 4: But when you set it up through your organization, by the time you get your paycheck that money's already gone.
• 35:42
Speaker 4: You don't even see it.
• 35:44
Speaker 4: You've just taken the discipline happens once when you set it up and now it's automatic.
• 35:50
Speaker 4: You never look at it again.
• 35:52
Speaker 4: And now to me it's like a muscle when you go to the gym and you start lifting weights.
• 35:56
Speaker 4: The more you lift, the more weight you're able to lift, right.
• 36:00
Speaker 4: In that same way, when you start by disciplining yourself by saving 20%, after six months you're going to go huh, I'm doing pretty good, I'm going to raise it to 25%.
• 36:09
Speaker 4: Or another way of looking at it is every time you get a pay, raise, you increase the amount of money you're saving and before you know it, you're maxing out your 401k.
• 36:19
Speaker 4: And that is the simplest way to accelerate your retirement, not so you can get rich and save turtle shells.
• 36:28
Speaker 4: That's the fastest way to retirement so that you could steward that time and those treasures for the glory of.
• 36:35
  Speaker 1: God.
• 36:35
Speaker 1: So what's your credentials for giving us this information?
• 36:38
Speaker 2: Who are you, Oscar?
• 36:40
  Speaker 1: You're an ex-atheist Tell us that's right.
• 36:43
Speaker 4: I spent 10 years in finance and so I was licensed Series 7, series 63, 63, all of the things, and it was a.
• 36:54
Speaker 4: It was a lot of fun.
• 36:55
Speaker 4: So I'm coming from a place of just I've been.
• 36:59
Speaker 1: I've seen it happen.
• 37:00
Speaker 4: And I'll tell you this too I grew up in a low income family and I will.
• 37:06
  Speaker 4: I will retire.
• 37:08
Speaker 4: Not that I ever see myself actually retiring, but I'm in route towards doing that, and never because I made a million dollars, but because I've been faithfully saving since I was a teenager.
• 37:19
Speaker 1: So would you say to your kids, when they get of age, to buy a used car or a brand new car?
• 37:24
  Speaker 4: Always used.
• 37:25
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I mean cars are.
• 37:29
Speaker 4: In my opinion I'm starting to go on a rant here cars are the fastest way to keep yourself poor Right.
• 37:35
Speaker 3: The second you drive it off the lot, you've lost massive value.
• 37:38
  Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly right.
• 37:40
Speaker 1: So you're saying a used new car, not something like 20 years old that's going to cause you problems financially, but something that's pretty good.
• 37:47
Speaker 4: Yeah, a 7 to 10-year year old car under 60,000 miles you're gonna buy for 10 to $15,000.
• 37:53
Speaker 4: And you're gonna keep that until it goes to 280,000 miles.
• 37:56
Speaker 4: You won't have a car payment for seven, eight, nine years.
• 37:59
Speaker 4: The average American buys and sells their own car every three years.
• 38:04
Speaker 4: The average car payment is $600 a month in America right now.
• 38:08
Speaker 4: So for somebody that's like I don't have the money to save there, it is right there.
• 38:14
Speaker 4: Buy a used car, hold onto it until it's in the grave and take the money you would otherwise spend and prepare yourself for retirement.
• 38:21
Speaker 1: And if it works, don't fix it.
• 38:23
Speaker 1: A mechanic said that to me once.
• 38:24
Speaker 1: He said I can hear a noise in my motor.
• 38:26
Speaker 1: He said don't worry about it.
• 38:34
Speaker 3: Just if it's driving, keep it, yeah, keep going until something happens.
• 38:35
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that's so good, oscar okay.
• 38:36
Speaker 3: But then there are those listening right now who aren't in a job where there's a 401k, talk about roth iras and what people can do with that yeah, that's exactly right.
• 38:41
Speaker 4: Not not all companies will have a 401k for you.
• 38:44
Speaker 4: Uh, a roth ira or an ira are both simply they're your own version of a 401k, and you can either do that after you get paid or you can still set that up.
• 38:55
Speaker 4: Set that up so that it automatically comes out of your checking account, but especially for if you you know, if you're self-employed, which many young adults in America now are self-employed they're doing consultant work and every time you get paid, you know this, you get paid and no taxes come out of it and at the end of the year, you pay that giant lump sum of taxes.
• 39:15
Speaker 4: One of the best way to cut down on taxes is to pay yourself in a savings account.
• 39:21
Speaker 4: Basically, think about it like this Would you rather pay the government that money or would you rather pay your future self that money?
• 39:29
Speaker 3: Yeah, my son-in-law, matthias, he's in wealth management.
• 39:31
Speaker 3: He just kind of did this practice presentation on Rachel.
• 39:38
Speaker 3: I mean was talking about that.
• 39:39
Speaker 3: Like a lot of people don't realize.
• 39:40
Speaker 3: Like with taxes, right, I mean through different creative retirement plans you can defer that tax and, you know, then benefit more from what's in there at that time and it can grow, and so there's so many different creative things, but-.
• 39:56
Speaker 4: Let me say one other thing, if you don't mind, and I showed this to one or both of your boys when we were talking about this um, which is, there's this old study that we, we used to do to show the power of compounding interest, cause that's really where you make your money in return and savings.
• 40:13
Speaker 4: And the point is this is you ask somebody, would you what, what, what would makes more sense to you to save $ thousand dollars a year from age 15 to 25 and then never save a penny again?
• 40:24
Speaker 4: Or, at the age 25, start saving seven thousand dollars a year until the age 65, which is far more time, that's, you know whatever that is.
• 40:34
Speaker 4: That's 50 years of saving seven thousand dollars a year.
• 40:37
Speaker 4: And you would think, well, 50 years of saving seven7,000 a year.
• 40:39
Speaker 4: And you would think, well, 50 years of saving $7,000 a year will make me more money.
• 40:42
Speaker 4: But no, because of the power of compounding interest, saving $7,000 a year from 15 to 25, you'd have something like it's almost double the amount of money that you would actually have, and the reason why simply is the power of compounding interest.
• 40:57
Speaker 4: The faster you start, the faster it pays off.
• 41:01
Speaker 3: Yeah, oh, it's so good, yeah.
• 41:02
Speaker 3: And, mark, at the end of the day, it's stewardship, right, and that I've always said look, bottom line is, either you are going to take care of yourself and your family, or someone else is going to have to take care of you and your family, whether it's the government, whether it's other family members, or you end up in a destitute place, right?
• 41:21
Speaker 3: So I'd love you to speak to that, mark.
• 41:23
Speaker 3: But the balance of that, though, of trusting the Lord and also continuing to be generous, not getting lopsided on that, yeah.
• 41:32
Speaker 2: Yeah, it was DL Moody, I believe, who said make as much money as you can by all the means you can and save as much money as you can, all the while giving away as much money as you can right.
• 41:42
Speaker 2: It might have been Wesley.
• 41:43
Speaker 2: It might have been Wesley, it doesn't matter, just say somebody who's dead and people move on there is and I don't even know what we're talking about anymore.
• 41:54
Speaker 2: What was the question, sable?
• 41:57
Speaker 3: Just about wise stewardship that either we take care of ourselves and our families, or someone else will, and to balance that out with being generous as well and trusting the Lord.
• 42:09
Speaker 2: Yeah, I used to have a thing that I used to do before I had credit cards.
• 42:14
Speaker 2: I would use cash for everything and then the change that I would have left over I would put that inside my other pocket and then I would accumulate all that money and I would put that into a missions fund that I would give away to missions or put it into a different way to be able to give away to people.
• 42:28
Speaker 2: You know cash is king.
• 42:29
Speaker 2: You know Dave Ramsey says that we want to take advantage of paying off debt and you have the ability to pay off debt almost as fast as you got into debt.
• 42:37
Speaker 2: When you begin to follow into that snowball effect of throwing that money into that thing and you stop eating out, you know life is quick.
• 42:47
Speaker 2: We will leave money.
• 42:49
Speaker 2: We can't take it with us.
• 42:50
Speaker 2: Right, the old adage that you've never seen a U-Haul followed behind a hearse A.
• 42:57
  Speaker 3: U-Haul pulling a hearse A.
• 42:58
  Speaker 2: U-Haul pulling a hearse.
• 43:00
  Speaker 2: No, a hearse pulling a U-Haul.
• 43:01
Speaker 3: Yeah, it doesn't really matter.
• 43:02
Speaker 3: Yeah, it doesn't matter if they're dead.
• 43:07
Speaker 1: TL Moody said that no, it's Wesley, it was Wesley Wesley just put it in the old.
• 43:10
Speaker 2: You know you will leave money behind.
• 43:13
Speaker 2: So we can either send it on ahead up into the heavens or we can just leave it behind for other people.
• 43:20
Speaker 2: I like the idea of being able to give anonymously and give cheerfully.
• 43:26
Speaker 2: God loves a hilarious giver.
• 43:29
Speaker 2: I love to give.
• 43:30
Speaker 2: I'm always looking for creative ways to give.
• 43:31
Speaker 2: Ray has been a really great role model in that.
• 43:34
Speaker 2: I remember when I was inside the cubicle and Ray says, can I get you anything?
• 43:39
Speaker 2: And I said chocolate shake extra thick.
• 43:40
Speaker 2: You know, just joking around, but I love it, you know.
• 43:41
Speaker 2: That's why I was on the tip of my tongue.
• 43:42
Speaker 2: Next thing, you know, like 15 minutes later, here comes Ray with a chocolate shake.
• 43:46
Speaker 3: You know half full because, he drank the other half.
• 43:50
Speaker 3: I love lobster tail.
• 43:52
Speaker 3: I just, I love motorcycles, motorcycles, chaboli, chaboli, uber.
• 44:00
  Speaker 2: Eats comes.
• 44:01
Speaker 2: Ct study said only one life to a soon be passed.
• 44:04
Speaker 2: Only what's done for Christ will last.
• 44:07
Speaker 2: It was a poem in 1904.
• 44:10
Speaker 2: By Spurgeon, by Spurgeon and Wesley.
• 44:13
Speaker 1: You guys are crazy.
• 44:14
Speaker 1: I can't even concentrate when you guys are talking.
• 44:16
Speaker 1: We are listening, Mark.
• 44:20
Speaker 2: Whoa, whoa listening, mark.
• 44:21
Speaker 2: Well, he gave up his fame and fortune to become a missionary right In.
• 44:25
  Speaker 1: China and Africa.
• 44:26
Speaker 2: Who's that CT Stubbs?
• 44:27
Speaker 1: He was a cricket player.
• 44:28
Speaker 1: Yeah, a professional cricket player.
• 44:30
Speaker 2: Yeah, and he served until he died when he was 70 in the Congo.
• 44:34
  Speaker 2: That's real.
• 44:36
Speaker 2: That's what retirement looks like.
• 44:37
Speaker 2: Retirement looks like you're serving until you die.
• 44:40
Speaker 2: There's no giving up on the Great Commission.
• 44:42
Speaker 2: There's no giving up on life.
• 44:43
Speaker 2: There's no throwing in the towel.
• 44:44
Speaker 2: There's no saying I no longer have anything on my bucket list.
• 44:47
Speaker 2: So, lord, now you can take me.
• 44:48
Speaker 2: No, as long as you have a little bit of energy, you go until you die.
• 44:53
Speaker 2: That is the point and the purpose of life to serve Christ, to know Him and to make Him known.
• 44:59
Speaker 1: The cross should be first on the bucket list.
• 45:01
Speaker 1: Oh, I like that.
• 45:03
Speaker 1: Did you come up with that Fright?
• 45:07
  Speaker 1: I don't like to say.
• 45:09
Speaker 3: Yeah, Mark, that's so good.
• 45:11
Speaker 2: You weren't listening to remember.
• 45:13
Speaker 2: Yeah, I had no idea what you said.
• 45:23
Speaker 3: But you know, I think when we've seen it done right we're inspired.
• 45:27
Speaker 3: When we've seen these dear saints that had a plan the whole time, I think what retirement looks like, for a Christian too, is intentionality.
• 45:33
Speaker 3: You don't just kind of arrive there and like, okay, let's figure out what to do.
• 45:37
Speaker 3: I mean, you should be planning ahead and saying, when I get there, here's what I'm literally looking forward to doing.
• 45:43
Speaker 3: And I've seen certain saints do that where they'll move by the church.
• 45:48
Speaker 3: We have an elder at our church.
• 45:50
Speaker 3: They just moved by the church.
• 45:51
Speaker 3: They're heading into retirement.
• 45:53
  Speaker 3: Why?
• 45:53
Speaker 3: So that they can be there ready to serve.
• 45:56
Speaker 3: And there are others.
• 45:56
Speaker 3: There's a dear brother named Phil, at Kindred.
• 45:59
Speaker 3: His wife passed away, he retired, but man, he's serving in the radio ministry for our church and he's involved and he's there on Sunday mornings and you'll see him doing different things and there's so much to do for the Lord.
• 46:10
Speaker 3: But you plan it out.
• 46:11
Speaker 3: We plan for weddings, we plan for our careers, we plan for our vacations.
• 46:18
Speaker 3: We need to plan for retirement.
• 46:21
Speaker 3: We use the word because it's what we have.
• 46:23
Speaker 3: But the retirement years, when you reach that stage, when you're no longer, maybe in your normal occupation, what are you going to be doing and then you begin to approach that with intentionality.
• 46:35
Speaker 3: I love what John Piper said.
• 46:37
Speaker 3: He said finishing life to the glory of Christ means using whatever strength and eyesight and hearing and mobility and resources we have left to treasure Christ and in every way make him look like the treasure he is.
• 46:52
Speaker 3: Oh, you know you're saying, man, it's not over.
• 46:56
Speaker 3: And it's crazy because you know you'll see people today saying like, oh, the you know 60 is a new 50 or whatever.
• 47:04
Speaker 3: It keeps moving back and back and back.
• 47:06
Speaker 3: You know, but their point in that is that now I could hoard up more.
• 47:10
Speaker 3: You guys remember that illustration with the rope.
• 47:14
Speaker 3: Yes, you have a rope, imagine it goes infinitely.
• 47:18
Speaker 3: But you have this one-foot strip that represents your life, and then you have, at the tip of that, retirement, which is about an inch right, and you have people that are living those 11 inches for the purpose of really living it up in that one inch, and that the forgetting.
• 47:43
Speaker 3: Yet behind that one foot that represents our lives is an infinite rope that represents eternity.
• 47:49
Speaker 3: So instead of looking that direction and saying I want to invest all of this for that, we're throwing our all into that so we can live in that one inch when we're old and can hardly do anything anyway, so vain.
• 48:03
  Speaker 1: It certainly is.
• 48:04
Speaker 4: Yeah, On stewardship, you reminded me to go back to that.
• 48:08
Speaker 4: You know stewarding our finances well, whether it's now or in retirement.
• 48:13
Speaker 4: I think the idea of stewardship is just so important.
• 48:17
Speaker 4: And we have, you know, we're a nonprofit.
• 48:18
Speaker 4: We have friends in the ministry who partner with us and I have, you know we're a nonprofit.
• 48:20
Speaker 4: We have friends in the ministry who partner with us and I love when I call them and thank them.
• 48:24
Speaker 4: Some of them will just be like man, it's, I'm just a steward, it's not even my money, I'm just it's, I'm like passing it through, this is his money, Like they, and you really sense that they really believe they're just simply stewards obeying the lord who's you know, the gift and giver of all things.
• 48:41
Speaker 4: And it reminds me of I think I've shared with you guys this one time uh, uh, was taking my kids through in and out and I didn't get fries and I was like hey, can I have a fry?
• 48:50
Speaker 4: And one of my kids at a really young age like, oh, dad, that's my fries 17 and I go I go and I go.
• 48:58
Speaker 4: I am the giver and taker away of fries.
• 49:02
Speaker 4: I can give you bags of fries, or I can give you no fry at all, and all I want from you is one fry, truly because he is the giver and taker away of all things.
• 49:15
Speaker 4: We are simply stewards, and when we act as stewards, ultimately we're giving away something that didn't even belong to us.
• 49:24
Speaker 1: Familiarity breeds contempt is such a powerful saying.
• 49:26
Speaker 1: I got a taste of what you were talking about with your child when I was five.
• 49:31
Speaker 1: My mom always had dinner ready at five o'clock every night.
• 49:35
Speaker 1: One day it was five past five and I was angry.
• 49:38
Speaker 1: I was seriously angry as a little kid.
• 49:41
Speaker 1: I thought, where is my dinner on my table?
• 49:44
Speaker 1: And a familiarity breeds contempt.
• 49:46
Speaker 1: Oscar, what do you think of debt?
• 49:47
Speaker 1: When we came from New Zealand to America, we couldn't believe how debt was a way of life.
• 49:52
  Speaker 1: Credit card debt.
• 49:53
Speaker 1: Going to school you get into debt universities.
• 49:56
Speaker 1: What are your thoughts on debt?
• 49:58
  Speaker 4: It's a dangerous thing.
• 49:59
Speaker 4: I mean, for most people we abuse debt in a terrible way.
• 50:04
Speaker 4: I don't remember the numbers now because I'm not up to speed on it, but I mean back in the day I think the average person was carrying like tens of thousands of dollars of credit card debt.
• 50:15
Speaker 4: I think there's good debt and there's bad debt, but for most Americans there's just simply bad debt period.
• 50:22
Speaker 4: I would say, avoid it.
• 50:23
Speaker 4: I think the only contingencies on that is, you know, if you have an incredibly low interest rate of 1% to 3%, you can make more.
• 50:33
  Speaker 4: It's called arbitrage.
• 50:33
Speaker 4: You can make more than you actually spend in your debt.
• 50:36
Speaker 4: But that's very rare.
• 50:38
Speaker 4: For the most part, when we're talking about debt, we're talking about high interest rate debt and I would say avoid it at all cost.
• 50:47
Speaker 1: Send your financial questions too.
• 50:56
Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree, I mean as much as you can avoid debt because, yeah, it puts you in a certain position, but when you're free man free, um man it's, it's liberating.
• 51:00
Speaker 3: You know, to own no man anything.
• 51:02
Speaker 3: I, like you said, sometimes there are circumstances that that necessitate it or that it's wise to do it because you, you, you have certain securities, you know, uh, and reasons for it, like, for example, buying a home, um, you, you often need to go into debt to buy a home, but you have something that's appreciating, you have to live somewhere, you have to pay, so, instead of giving it to rent and it's gone forever, you're gaining it back through that investment.
• 51:27
Speaker 3: So there's things like that, I think that are sometimes some people need to go into debt to get a car because they definitely don't.
• 51:33
Speaker 2: But they need that car to go to work and that'll help them earn income, but you have to be wise.
• 51:45
Speaker 4: How do you do it?
• 51:45
Speaker 4: How much do you take on?
• 51:45
Speaker 4: Do you go out and get a 70, 80, $90,000 brand new car that you may not need and get yourself in that position?
• 51:47
Speaker 4: On that note, this is another thing, other than buying new cars.
• 51:49
Speaker 4: That that is always such a bummer to me is that when you go buy a home, here's what's going to happen there.
• 51:53
Speaker 4: You're going to go to a real estate agent and they're going to say how much can you afford?
• 51:56
Speaker 4: And you're going to say I don't know.
• 51:57
Speaker 4: And they're going to say go to a loan officer.
• 51:58
Speaker 4: And the loan officer is going to pull credit and they're going to say the maximum house you can afford is $800,000.
• 52:04
Speaker 4: And you're going to think, okay, $800,000 is my buying power.
• 52:10
Speaker 4: Why would you maximize it?
• 52:13
Speaker 4: See that the loan officer and the real estate agent wants you to max out.
• 52:17
Speaker 4: The bank is saying this is the most tolerated risk we can have.
• 52:21
Speaker 4: And we think to ourselves okay, 800, but why not 810?
• 52:26
Speaker 4: See, we are constantly thinking that the bank and the loan officer and the realtor, they all want you to buy the most expensive house possible.
• 52:32
Speaker 4: But just because you can buy a maxed out house doesn't mean you should.
• 52:38
Speaker 4: I remember when we bought our first home, they gave us a number and they were like we'll start my real estate.
• 52:44
Speaker 4: He was like, all right, that's what we're going to start shopping for and I was like, no, we're not.
• 52:47
Speaker 4: We went 30% less than that number because I didn't want to max.
• 52:52
Speaker 4: What's the obsession with max?
• 52:54
Speaker 4: What's the most I can afford?
• 52:56
Speaker 4: Why do we think that way?
• 52:57
Speaker 4: It's such an American way of thinking about buying a house and it's dangerous.
• 53:01
Speaker 2: And now you live in Compton.
• 53:02
Speaker 2: That's right, yeah, in.
• 53:03
  Speaker 4: Watts.
• 53:05
Speaker 3: Yeah, and look, you know Our apologies to Compton.
• 53:08
  Speaker 1: It's a matter.
• 53:10
Speaker 3: We talked about stewardship in terms of money.
• 53:12
Speaker 3: Right, god owns our money.
• 53:14
Speaker 3: God owns our time too, and you have to understand that.
• 53:17
Speaker 3: You have to look at your time and say what am I doing with it?
• 53:21
Speaker 3: The Christian who loves the Lord, when he thinks of retirement, says Lord, how can I redeem that time?
• 53:27
Speaker 3: And that's biblical right See then Ephesians 5, 15 to 16, that you walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise.
• 53:34
Speaker 3: Redeeming the time right, that means buy it up, take it and redeem it so that you can then use it for what really matters, and I think that's what we need to be examining.
• 53:45
Speaker 3: How can I, in those years when I have a lot of time I have a brother now who's done working and he's like man I've been reading the Word.
• 53:54
Speaker 3: I just listened to Romans on audio and I just read this book and I said man, you have the greatest gift imaginable you have time.
• 54:03
Speaker 3: You can use it for the Lord.
• 54:05
Speaker 3: You could just sit around basically rotting.
• 54:08
Speaker 2: I remember when Michael Jordan retired and he was at during the Hall of Fame induction, he had said I just want it to be made known that I never lost a game, I just ran out of time.
• 54:22
Speaker 2: Running out of time, right Time is no respecter of people.
• 54:29
  Speaker 3: Redeem it.
• 54:29
  Speaker 3: Yeah, and time?
• 54:30
Speaker 3: You know like money?
• 54:32
Speaker 3: It can either be wasted or it can be invested or spent.
• 54:37
Speaker 1: Oh, is that original?
• 54:38
Speaker 1: The word spent is it just came to me.
• 54:41
Speaker 3: But because that word is very close to spent, he gets royalties because he just used it.
• 54:45
  Speaker 3: Yeah, it's allowed.
• 54:47
  Speaker 3: Pay Ray, yeah.
• 54:49
Speaker 3: And then you know I love Proverbs 16, 31.
• 54:51
Speaker 3: The silver-haired head is a crown of glory.
• 54:56
Speaker 3: No, Listen, if it is found in the way of righteousness.
• 55:02
  Speaker 2: Oh, that's what's wrong.
• 55:03
  Speaker 2: Am I good?
• 55:04
Speaker 3: Because you don't think, oh, gray-haired, he's old.
• 55:06
Speaker 3: Whatever, he could be an old fool, or he could be wise like Ray.
• 55:11
  Speaker 1: No offense man.
• 55:12
Speaker 3: Every day gets up to pray and do it anyway.
• 55:17
Speaker 3: So yeah, and then you know Proverbs 6, matthew 6, 19 to 20, do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
• 55:33
Speaker 3: I really do believe there is going to be that moment in eternity when we stand before the Lord and there is going to be some massive regret, as some of us will realize like I could have invested more in eternity Like when the reality of eternity hits and we realized what we could have done for the sake of eternity.
• 55:52
Speaker 3: And we realized what we could have done for the sake of eternity.
• 55:54
  Speaker 3: It's like remember Schindler's List.
• 55:57
Speaker 1: We saw that just recently, Boy.
• 55:58
Speaker 1: It was a cheerful film, the clean version right.
• 56:02
Speaker 1: Yeah, it was the clean version.
• 56:04
Speaker 3: But remember when he just kept realizing because he had sold different things Right at the end, yeah, given money to save Jewish people from concentration camps and they were buying them.
• 56:14
Speaker 3: They were basically buying them and then he started to look I could have sold this.
• 56:20
Speaker 3: He became consumed with what he could have done in light of this reward of saving human beings' lives, and so I think we just that was the most moving part of that movie.
• 56:33
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 56:36
Speaker 3: And so we need to think in that direction, and I love what Paul Washer said.
• 56:44
Speaker 3: This modern idea that you hit a certain age and coast for the rest of your life.
• 56:48
Speaker 3: There's nothing biblical about that.
• 56:52
Speaker 1: We spent two hours with Paul recently.
• 56:54
Speaker 1: Oh, wasn't that great.
• 56:54
Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a good time.
• 56:55
Speaker 3: Seriously, we could have kept going.
• 56:57
Speaker 3: What I loved about him was his earnestness, his passion for the Lord, yes, and yeah, it's so good.
• 57:03
Speaker 4: I'm glad I was out of town for that.
• 57:05
Speaker 4: Yeah, he wouldn't have met with us if we were there.
• 57:09
  Speaker 3: Nancy Leigh DeMoss.
• 57:11
Speaker 3: Some of the most effective ministry in the world is being done by faithful saints who have lived long enough to know what really matters.
• 57:19
Speaker 1: That's good, I like that one.
• 57:20
  Speaker 1: Right, ray, absolutely.
• 57:23
Speaker 1: Yeah, I've lived long enough.
• 57:24
  Speaker 1: Ray, you're 75.
• 57:25
Speaker 1: Yep, how's that feel?
• 57:26
  Speaker 1: I don't know.
• 57:27
  Speaker 1: I still feel 19.
• 57:29
  Speaker 1: 75.
• 57:30
Speaker 1: Ridiculous, just can't breathe or run.
• 57:34
Speaker 3: Ray, I'm amazed by the energy you still have.
• 57:38
Speaker 2: Energy in my legs.
• 57:39
Speaker 3: In fact, where were we?
• 57:40
Speaker 3: Well, we were doing the interview here in the studio yesterday.
• 57:44
Speaker 3: Is air conditioning on?
• 57:47
  Speaker 3: It's like it's a guarantee.
• 57:49
Speaker 3: At some point you're going to say that you run hot man, I run normal.
• 57:53
Speaker 1: No, you're like a humming that you run hot man, I run normal.
• 57:54
Speaker 1: No, you're like a hummingbird no.
• 57:55
  Speaker 1: I'm normal.
• 57:56
Speaker 1: Everyone else is a bit weird.
• 57:58
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 57:58
  Speaker 1: Yeah, psalm 92, 13 and 14.
• 58:03
Speaker 2: What do you think?
• 58:03
Speaker 1: of that Isn't that great.
• 58:04
  Speaker 1: So let's close.
• 58:05
Speaker 1: Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God.
• 58:11
Speaker 1: They shall still bear fruit in old age, they shall be fresh and flourishing and they shall not retire.
• 58:18
Speaker 1: I added that last bit.
• 58:21
Speaker 1: You added that part there.
• 58:22
  Speaker 1: Book of Editions.
• 58:25
Speaker 3: So, friends, I hope that you've been encouraged today to recognize that, if you live to that stage of life where you're able to disconnect from your normal vocation, there is so much to do.
• 58:40
Speaker 3: People are sitting in hospital beds, lonely, dying.
• 58:44
Speaker 3: There are kids that are in different institutions because they don't have parents, that need big brothers and big sisters.
• 58:54
Speaker 3: There are lost people all around your neighborhood.
• 58:58
Speaker 1: And there are people coming out of Walmart and you could have your table there with Christian books on it.
• 59:03
Speaker 3: Yeah, get a dog, get it some sunglasses, get a hole in your beard.
• 59:09
Speaker 3: It's the cover of his book man I'm like yeah, right, but who said it?
• 59:14
Speaker 3: Do something, do something, do something.
• 59:17
  Speaker 1: That was.
• 59:17
  Speaker 3: Spurgeon, spurgeon.
• 59:19
Speaker 1: Societies and unions are making constitutions.
• 59:21
Speaker 1: Let us win soul.
• 59:23
Speaker 2: Yeah, he was quoting Wesley.
• 59:25
Speaker 1: Yes, wesley was quoting Stud.
• 59:28
Speaker 2: Yeah, some people are alive, but they're not living right.
• 59:31
Speaker 2: I want to live until I die, and the only way to do that, no matter what age and stage that you're at.
• 59:39
Speaker 2: It's kind of like what Oscar's saying When's the best time to start saving money?
• 59:41
Speaker 2: Now, no matter what age you are.
• 59:42
Speaker 2: You start saving now, right?
• 59:43
Speaker 2: I want to live until I die and I want to be surrounded with people who can speak truth into my life unfettered.
• 59:51
  Speaker 2: Is that right?
• 59:53
Speaker 2: And you guys are like that right?
• 59:55
Speaker 2: And I want to encourage you guys out there, whoever's listening, to be that person where you can speak inside of other people's lives and allow them to speak inside of your life and live until you die, and by virtue of the fact that you're still alive.
• 1:00:05
  Speaker 2: God's not done.
• 1:00:08
Speaker 1: Amen, and biblically you should die so you can live.
• 1:00:11
Speaker 1: Amen, and biblically you should die so you can live.
• 1:00:13
Speaker 3: Ooh, I like that.
• 1:00:14
Speaker 3: Die so that you can live.
• 1:00:16
Speaker 3: Save so that you can give Hulk.
• 1:00:19
  Speaker 1: Hogan said that.
• 1:00:20
  Speaker 1: What's that?
• 1:00:22
Speaker 4: Hulk Hogan said that.
• 1:00:23
Speaker 2: He was quoting Wesley.
• 1:00:26
Speaker 3: I'll close with this quote from JI Packer we are never too old to be useful in the work of the Lord.
• 1:00:29
Speaker 3: Old age brings wisdom that the younger desperately need.
• 1:00:34
  Speaker 3: That's so good.
• 1:00:35
Speaker 3: Yeah, there you have it, friends.
• 1:00:37
Speaker 1: He said that when he was a teenager.
• 1:00:40
Speaker 3: Don't forget, friends, fight like a man.
