  Speaker 1: the Book of Acts. We're in chapter thirteen, and this

  Speaker 1: is a great book to dive into. As we get

  Speaker 1: a little background, Paul and Barnabas were called out for
• 4:10
  Speaker 1: the work that God has prepared for them. It was
• 4:15
  Speaker 1: not man, It was not a pastor or a church

  Speaker 1: that sent them out. It was the Holy Spirit and
• 4:21
  Speaker 1: the leaders in the church just confirmed what God was
• 4:25
  Speaker 1: already doing in their lives.

  Speaker 1: And so as they were outs and they were a

  Speaker 1: call to this work, that doesn't mean tore notact going

  Speaker 1: to face opposition. Trust me, I've been there of some

  Speaker 1: all they can to block, hinder and stop the Gospel

  Speaker 1: and equipped. And like Paul and even Peter, they confronted

  Speaker 1: on the Sabbath day and sat down, and after the

  Speaker 1: reading of the Law and the prophets, the rulers of

  Speaker 1: the synagogue sent to them saying, men and brethren, if

  Speaker 1: you have any word of exhortation for the people, say on,

  Speaker 1: and pulsed it up, and, motioning with his hands, said,

  Speaker 1: men of Israel, you who fear God, listen. The God

  Speaker 1: Now, for a time of about forty years he put

  Speaker 1: up with their ways in the wilderness, and when he

  Speaker 1: had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he

  Speaker 1: distributed their land to them by allotment. All right, there

  Speaker 1: was a lot of reading right there. But let's go back,

  Speaker 1: and I went past sixteen, but I just wanted to
• 8:10
  Speaker 1: complete the thought.

  Speaker 3: Amen, Amen. Okay. So now when Paul.

  Speaker 1: And his party set from Papals that came to Perga
• 8:26
  Speaker 1: in Pamphilia and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem.

  Speaker 1: So let's break this down. This verse may look small,
• 8:38
  Speaker 1: but it's heavy. There's a lot going on in this
• 8:42
  Speaker 1: verse right here. Now, let's notice, first of all, up
• 8:46
  Speaker 1: until now, scripture has said Barnabas and Saul. But notice
• 8:52
  Speaker 1: the shift. It said Paul and his party. Now that
• 8:58
  Speaker 1: sounds like a band, right, Paul and his party. This
• 9:02
  Speaker 1: is the moment leadership transitions. And it was all done
• 9:08
  Speaker 1: by the spirit, the apostle. Paul steps into spiritual authority,
• 9:15
  Speaker 1: and it was not done by force, but it was
• 9:19
  Speaker 1: his calling. It was done by the spirit. God elevates
• 9:25
  Speaker 1: whom he chooses. And not everyone is comfortable with the shift.
• 9:32
  Speaker 1: Sometimes not everybody is comfortable with people who are chose
• 9:37
  Speaker 1: to lead. At times. I know this is happened in
• 9:42
  Speaker 1: my life, and I can think of other people that
• 9:46
  Speaker 1: this has happened to as well. Now, right after that,
• 9:53
  Speaker 1: there's a heartbreak, and if you read it too fast,
• 9:56
  Speaker 1: you're not gonna notice it. Right, we're talking abo about
• 10:01
  Speaker 1: John Mark who leaves them. He left the party, and
• 10:08
  Speaker 1: the scripture doesn't give us any explanation on why he left.
• 10:13
  Speaker 1: You don't see any public agreement on record there was
• 10:18
  Speaker 1: no line out of hands and sending him back right.
• 10:22
  Speaker 1: There was just one simple line departing from them. Now,
• 10:28
  Speaker 1: this wasn't a simple vacation.
• 10:33
  Speaker 3: Back to home. This wasn't for some R and R.
• 10:36
  Speaker 1: This was abandonment in the face of hardship. How many
• 10:44
  Speaker 1: of us have felt the sting of abandonment before. First
• 10:51
  Speaker 1: of all, they were going in dangerous territory. There is
• 10:54
  Speaker 1: harsh terrain in this area, there were diseases in this area,
• 11:00
  Speaker 1: and there was spiritual resistance. And when the pressure hit
• 11:07
  Speaker 1: Mark decided to turn back. He basically abandoned them. And
• 11:13
  Speaker 1: we can get more insight on this because this is
• 11:20
  Speaker 1: the reason why Barnadas and saw the part ways. They
• 11:24
  Speaker 1: had a harsh debate over this situation that was contentious
• 11:30
  Speaker 1: between the two because of what our brother did. He
• 11:34
  Speaker 1: left them. Now, let's be honest. Not everyone who starts
• 11:44
  Speaker 1: the journey is built to finish the session with you.
• 11:53
  Speaker 1: This is true in a lot of areas of life.
• 11:56
  Speaker 1: There's been classes that I've signed up for where the
• 12:00
  Speaker 1: class was full and then midway through people start falling
• 12:06
  Speaker 1: off to where it's actually a small crowd that will
• 12:10
  Speaker 1: actually graduate and receive their certification. Certificate, diploma, whatever.
• 12:17
  Speaker 3: It may be. Right.
• 12:19
  Speaker 1: And we've seen this even in high school that some
• 12:23
  Speaker 1: of the people that started high school were not there
• 12:26
  Speaker 1: when you graduated. Some moved, things happen, you know, God
• 12:32
  Speaker 1: forbid nothing, you know bad happens to them. But sometimes
• 12:37
  Speaker 1: people who start with you will not finish. Some people
• 12:41
  Speaker 1: they love the vision, but they don't like the process
• 12:45
  Speaker 1: of walking through. They don't want to pay the price.
• 12:50
  Speaker 1: Some people love the calling, but not the cost of
• 12:54
  Speaker 1: the calling. That's why you see a lot of people
• 12:56
  Speaker 1: even we're serving God. Yeah, they want to go to heaven,
• 13:00
  Speaker 1: but they don't want to pick up the cross daily
• 13:03
  Speaker 1: and die to self. We don't want to pay the
• 13:07
  Speaker 1: price to be there.
• 13:08
  Speaker 3: Amen.
• 13:10
  Speaker 1: And it's not easy. It's not an easy thing. It's
• 13:13
  Speaker 1: quite difficult. But we have the power of the Spirit
• 13:18
  Speaker 1: to help us in this journey. All right now, John
• 13:30
  Speaker 1: Mark didn't fall into sin, He just quit. Sometimes quitting
• 13:40
  Speaker 1: hurts the mission just as much as if somebody had
• 13:46
  Speaker 1: a moral failure or some type of gross sin that
• 13:51
  Speaker 1: would destroy the ministry as well.
• 13:55
  Speaker 3: And I've lived it.
• 13:57
  Speaker 1: I know firsthand. The people you desire to fulfill purpose
• 14:02
  Speaker 1: and destiny with sometimes they just don't get it. They
• 14:06
  Speaker 1: rather chase after things of the flesh, or they weather
• 14:11
  Speaker 1: chase after things of the world, and now be devoted
• 14:16
  Speaker 1: to the things of God. And that's not gonna look
• 14:21
  Speaker 1: well on a day of judgment. Imagine, look at your
• 14:24
  Speaker 1: service unto the Lord. Right, let's look at our service
• 14:28
  Speaker 1: unto the Lord. And trust me, mine is lacking. It's
• 14:31
  Speaker 1: not like I'm perfect. But once it temporarily passes, temporarily
• 14:37
  Speaker 1: world passes.
• 14:39
  Speaker 3: All that is.
• 14:39
  Speaker 1: Temporary, Everything that we think is a priority now will
• 14:43
  Speaker 1: not even hit the radar where we're staying. Before him.

  Speaker 1: The only thing he's gonna ask us is what did

  Speaker 1: you do for me? What did you do for my kingdom?

  Speaker 1: How did you treat my son Jesus? That's gonna be

  Speaker 1: a lot of people can walk away so easily from
• 15:10
  Speaker 1: the call of God and from ministry. It's just heartbreaking,

  Speaker 1: right verse fourteen. But when they departed from Pergama, per
• 15:27
  Speaker 1: per Perga, they came to Antioch and Passeda and went
• 15:35
  Speaker 1: into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and they sat down. Now,
• 15:44
  Speaker 1: this Antioch is the Antioch of Piseda. Not the Antioch
• 15:49
  Speaker 1: in Syria, not the missionary sending out Antioch. This is
• 15:55
  Speaker 1: a different Antioch. The things about the city, the city
• 16:01
  Speaker 1: was a Roman city, It was politically strategic, and it
• 16:09
  Speaker 1: was spiritually influential. Now, Paul's pattern always continues.
• 16:19
  Speaker 3: He goes to the.
• 16:20
  Speaker 1: Jews first, right, he goes to the synagogue. Salvation is
• 16:25
  Speaker 1: first unto the Jews, and then it comes to the Gentiles.
• 16:30
  Speaker 1: That is God's pattern. Paul has always honored God's order.
• 16:40
  Speaker 1: The apostle Paul never rejected Israel. Even when Israel rejected
• 16:46
  Speaker 1: the message of Christ. Paul prayed that he wished he
• 16:50
  Speaker 1: would be a curse if that would save his whole nation.
• 16:53
  Speaker 1: He loved his brethren to the end. So it wasn't
• 17:00
  Speaker 1: a matter of racism or anything like that. But this
• 17:04
  Speaker 1: is God's order. You know, there's an order in our homes,
• 17:08
  Speaker 1: right the husband, the wife and the children. There's order
• 17:10
  Speaker 1: in society. When there's order, there's peace, there's harmony. God
• 17:15
  Speaker 1: is a god of order. And notice they sat down.
• 17:22
  Speaker 1: That's the posture of a teacher ready to speak. See
• 17:27
  Speaker 1: back in those days, the people would stand up while
• 17:31
  Speaker 1: the teacher would sit and speak and as we saw
• 17:36
  Speaker 1: plenty of times Jesus on the Sea of Galilee was
• 17:40
  Speaker 1: sitting and speaking to the people. Okay, it looks like
• 17:55
  Speaker 1: you lost another one. Now, let's break this down even
• 18:02
  Speaker 1: a little further. Right, Sometimes doors don't open immediately. They
• 18:07
  Speaker 1: came there, and they sat down, and they waited for
• 18:11
  Speaker 1: their opportunity. They did not barge in preaching, right, they
• 18:20
  Speaker 1: just waited. Some people, some of us talk way too soon,
• 18:25
  Speaker 1: you know what I mean. Wisdom knows when to sit
• 18:31
  Speaker 1: before knowing what to speak.
• 18:36
  Speaker 3: He said that.
• 18:36
  Speaker 1: They doesn't say that again, Wisdom knows when to sit
• 18:41
  Speaker 1: before even knowing what to speak. We need to hear
• 18:45
  Speaker 1: from the Holy Spirit. Ask the Holy Spirit what should
• 18:49
  Speaker 1: we say in a giving situation? Now verse fifteen, and
• 18:54
  Speaker 1: after the reading of the Law and the prophets, the
• 18:59
  Speaker 1: rulers the Synagogue sent to them saying, men and brethren,

  Speaker 1: if you have any word or exhortation for the people,
• 19:10
  Speaker 1: say on.

  Speaker 3: Now.

  Speaker 1: This was divine timing for Paul. Now let's look at
• 19:19
  Speaker 1: the order here. The Word is read first. Always, they
• 19:24
  Speaker 1: always read the word, and the Word is the foundation
• 19:29
  Speaker 1: of what any message should be should be. Now, the
• 19:34
  Speaker 1: exhortation doesn't replace scripture. It doesn't replace it. It explains it,
• 19:42
  Speaker 1: and it applies the scripture, and it calls for people
• 19:48
  Speaker 1: to respond to the truth of the word of God.
• 19:52
  Speaker 1: Now Paul isn't invited because he demanded a mic. His invited.
• 20:04
  Speaker 1: He is invited because God made room and he said
• 20:09
  Speaker 1: that again, your gift will make wound for you. Sometimes
• 20:14
  Speaker 1: all you have to do is wait for God to
• 20:16
  Speaker 1: open the door, because God will bring that around. If
• 20:21
  Speaker 1: we're trusting and waiting on him. You don't have to
• 20:26
  Speaker 1: force doors to open that God has already unlocked. If
• 20:30
  Speaker 1: God has already unlocked the door, all you need to
• 20:33
  Speaker 1: do is gently open it. Now, if you're faithful in preparation,
• 20:40
  Speaker 1: God will give you that opportunity. And when it's time,
• 20:49
  Speaker 1: they will say to you, say on, they will give.
• 20:54
  Speaker 3: You that floor.

  Speaker 1: Amen. Now Paul stood up, mostly with his hands, said,

  Speaker 1: men of Israel, and you whom fear God, listen now,

  Speaker 1: Paul standing, he stands up. This is no longer waiting.

  Speaker 1: This is proclamation time. Now let's notice real quick who
• 21:20
  Speaker 1: he addresses. He addresses the men of Israel, right, that's
• 21:25
  Speaker 1: the order onto Israel first. Then he mentions those who
• 21:32
  Speaker 1: fear God. Now this would be the gentiles who honor
• 21:37
  Speaker 1: the God of Israel. Now Paul's here speaks with clarity.
• 21:44
  Speaker 1: He speaks with authority and with respect. He doesn't water
• 21:50
  Speaker 1: down the truth, but he also doesn't insult the audience either.
• 21:58
  Speaker 1: This is true leadership. Paul doesn't start screaming, he doesn't compromise,

  Speaker 1: but he commands attention with truth. If you want influence,
• 22:17
  Speaker 1: if I want influence, and of course we want influence
• 22:22
  Speaker 1: in the kingdom to get people saved. If we truly
• 22:25
  Speaker 1: want that influence, we need to learn to speak with
• 22:29
  Speaker 1: conviction and with compassion. We need to ask the Holy
• 22:35
  Speaker 1: Spirit help us to speak with conviction and help us
• 22:39
  Speaker 1: to speak also with compassion. Hey man, all right, time
