- 0:00Hi, everyone. This is Lucas Voss with Becker's
- 0:02Healthcare. Thanks so much for tuning in to
- 0:04the Becker's Healthcare podcast series. Fantastic to have
- 0:07you. Today, we're talking about reimagining access, aligning
- 0:11technology strategy and
- 0:13the member experience. And I'm very excited to
- 0:16be joined by Rachel French, chief strategy and
- 0:18partnerships officer,
- 0:19MD Live by Evernorth. Rachel, it's so great
- 0:23to have you. Thanks for being here.
- 0:25Thanks for having me today. Absolutely.
- 0:27I wanna start off for our audience with,
- 0:29introductions. If you could just share a little
- 0:31bit about yourself and your work and journey
- 0:33in health care.
- 0:34Absolutely.
- 0:35So my background is actually in public health
- 0:38and digital innovation.
- 0:40I've spent my career working across payers, providers,
- 0:43and tech organizations,
- 0:45really with a mission to improve how care
- 0:47is delivered and experienced.
- 0:49What drew me to virtual care and to
- 0:52MD Live more specifically
- 0:54was the opportunity to address some of the
- 0:56most persistent challenges that we see in health
- 0:58care today, which is access and affordability.
- 1:02I myself was born and raised in a
- 1:04rural state, and I know firsthand
- 1:06the challenges of not having access to quality
- 1:08and affordable care.
- 1:10But now as the chief strategy and partnerships
- 1:12officer at MDLIVE, I have the pleasure to
- 1:14continue to drive my personal passion
- 1:17along with the company mission forward. And for
- 1:19me, it's incredibly rewarding to be part of
- 1:21a team that is making health care better
- 1:23every day.
- 1:24MD Live is an Evernorth health services company,
- 1:27and we're a leading provider of virtual care
- 1:29services, which includes primary care,
- 1:32urgent care, behavioral health, and dermatology.
- 1:36Nearly 63,000,000
- 1:37people have access to MD live either through
- 1:40their health plan or employer benefits,
- 1:42and we have a national network of board
- 1:45certified providers,
- 1:46including board certified doctors, licensed therapists,
- 1:50who are specifically trained in virtual care.
- 1:53We're dedicated to delivering accessible, personalized health care
- 1:56through a seamless digital platform,
- 1:58which we'll talk about more today.
- 2:01Rachel, it's always so great to hear the
- 2:02rural perspective. As someone who lives in Iowa,
- 2:05I absolutely understand.
- 2:08And you've you've mentioned some of the the
- 2:10challenges. Right? You've talked about these challenges. So
- 2:12we talk about,
- 2:14long wait times, appointment availability,
- 2:17patient access. Right? You talked about it remains
- 2:19one of the most persistent challenges for organizations
- 2:22right now. How are you thinking about redefining
- 2:25access in a way
- 2:26that's more sustainable and equitable for members?
- 2:30Yeah. I think up until recently, we've really
- 2:33thought about access
- 2:34primarily in terms of network design.
- 2:37And what I mean by that is the
- 2:38core question patients often ask is, is my
- 2:42provider in network or out of network? Is
- 2:44the provider service covered by my insurance or
- 2:47not? But today, we're seeing a shift. Access
- 2:50really is no longer just about who's in
- 2:52network.
- 2:53It's also about how care is delivered.
- 2:56So that means thinking beyond traditional modalities like
- 2:59brick and mortar,
- 3:00but including
- 3:01virtual
- 3:02and asynchronous care.
- 3:04It's really about meeting members where they are,
- 3:06and that's beyond geography,
- 3:08and making it easier for them to take
- 3:10the next best step in their care journey
- 3:12that's only gotten increasingly complex.
- 3:16Yeah. At the end of the day, it
- 3:17is truly about patient care. How can we
- 3:19improve that step and make it as easy
- 3:21as possible so folks can receive the care
- 3:23that they deserve and that they need?
- 3:26Why is this
- 3:28more personalized connected care experience
- 3:32so crucial in this process?
- 3:35It really comes down to that personalized and
- 3:38connected care is critical for engagement.
- 3:41You really have to think about how we
- 3:42can meet patients where they are so that
- 3:45they we can also think about how we
- 3:47provide the support for them to either take
- 3:48their first step in their care journey
- 3:51or continue on their journey to better health.
- 3:53And what I mean by that, or maybe
- 3:55a more specific example,
- 3:57is that MD Live, we do this through
- 3:59our provider guided care programs.
- 4:02And an example I'll give you is through
- 4:03our provider guided weight management care plan specifically,
- 4:07which we offer as part of our virtual
- 4:09primary care solution.
- 4:11And within these care plans, our providers work
- 4:13directly with our members to create an individualized
- 4:16care plan.
- 4:17These plans include clinical oversight,
- 4:20behavioral health support, and referrals.
- 4:23We also have tailored education that includes meal
- 4:25planning and exercise plans, all that have a
- 4:28personalized goal set not only with the patient,
- 4:32but in conjunction with their provider.
- 4:34And today, we see so many solutions on
- 4:36the market that rely primarily on the technology
- 4:39piece alone. But at MD Live, we see
- 4:42firsthand how provider involvement is so critical
- 4:45to those sustained outcomes, and we see those
- 4:48today.
- 4:49We see members are losing weight, they're staying
- 4:51engaged, and they're feeling supported.
- 4:54And it's all about making sure members aren't
- 4:56just receiving care, but they're actively participating in
- 4:59it with the right guidance every step of
- 5:01the way.
- 5:02Yeah. And you've mentioned something very important,
- 5:05just now as well, and you know this.
- 5:07We've seen
- 5:08so much investment, such significant investments in digital
- 5:12point solutions to improve access.
- 5:14However, there's still a large number of members
- 5:16that struggle to get
- 5:18the care that they need.
- 5:20Where do you see that disconnect between payer
- 5:23strategies and member experiences,
- 5:25and then how can organizations better align those
- 5:27two?
- 5:28Yeah. So payers are continuing to invest in
- 5:31digital solutions at increasing rates even more so
- 5:34since the pandemic. Mhmm. And they've done so
- 5:36to solve the access problem.
- 5:38But what's happening is now they're creating new
- 5:40issues or challenges.
- 5:42Members are experiencing more confusion, more fatigue,
- 5:46and ultimately ending up more disengaged because they're
- 5:49lost in all of the different offerings that
- 5:51they have.
- 5:52They're overwhelmed by a hodgepodge of offerings that
- 5:55don't really feel connected,
- 5:57intuitive, or even easy to navigate.
- 6:00Many of the digital solutions
- 6:02really have dead ends and lack connectivity,
- 6:05and most importantly, don't have a clear call
- 6:07to action for that member to take
- 6:09for their next part of their care journey.
- 6:12So the answer really isn't more solutions.
- 6:15It's payers need to move away from deploying
- 6:18some of these solutions and silos
- 6:20and instead towards designing
- 6:23a more personalized holistic care experience
- 6:25that connects the dots for the main members.
- 6:28And that's really the only way payers will
- 6:31ultimately be able to deliver on the promise
- 6:33of access.
- 6:34What role
- 6:36does patient education play here in this context?
- 6:39Right? How can leaders drive more effective engagement
- 6:42into all of these processes that you just
- 6:44mentioned?
- 6:46Yeah. One of the biggest barriers that we
- 6:48see is simply awareness.
- 6:50In fact, according to our own research that
- 6:52we've done, seventy percent of members who had
- 6:55MD live
- 6:57didn't use it simply because they didn't know
- 6:59they had it.
- 7:00That's a huge missed opportunity for both the
- 7:02member and the health plan.
- 7:04So the answer really lies in proactive guidance,
- 7:07meaning
- 7:08that we have personalized outreach so the member
- 7:11gets the information
- 7:12that feels relevant to them, while also making
- 7:15referrals and care transitions seamless so that the
- 7:18next step in their care journey is clear.
- 7:21When we take the burden off the patient
- 7:23to figure out what's available,
- 7:25when and how and where to use it,
- 7:27engagement goes up. Outcomes improve,
- 7:30and the investment payers are making can start
- 7:32to deliver real value.
- 7:35Yeah. The easier, the better. That's really a
- 7:37a good way to go for the patient
- 7:39and for everybody really in the process.
- 7:42Looking ahead, right, how do you see technology
- 7:46shaping the next five years of health care
- 7:49access really? And what are some of those
- 7:52innovations that you think
- 7:54will have the greatest impact on payer strategies
- 7:57and member experience here?
- 8:00We're going to continue to see the impact
- 8:02of two major forces.
- 8:04One,
- 8:05provider shortages,
- 8:07and two, an increasing number of consumers who
- 8:10do expect seamless,
- 8:11unfettered access to care.
- 8:13And as clinics close and we do have
- 8:16fewer providers available,
- 8:18virtual care isn't just a convenience anymore. It's
- 8:21an essential part of how care is delivered.
- 8:24One of the more exciting things we're seeing
- 8:26is the potential
- 8:27of generative AI, and that's to help solve
- 8:30this supply demand equation
- 8:32using AI to help providers
- 8:34work more efficiently
- 8:36without replacing that personal touch.
- 8:39At MD Live, for example,
- 8:41I can speak to that AI. We're using
- 8:43AI to reduce the administrative burden on providers,
- 8:48meaning that providers can spend less time on
- 8:50paperwork and more time with their patients.
- 8:52And, of course, we always wanna make sure
- 8:54that we're leveraging this powerful technology
- 8:57ethically and responsibly.
- 8:59I also think we're going to see a
- 9:01shift towards more virtual first models where members
- 9:04begin their journey digitally,
- 9:06and technology will play a huge role in
- 9:08making that happen.
- 9:09Think of things like intelligently
- 9:11guiding patients, sharing data bilaterally,
- 9:14and connector connecting different sites of care to
- 9:17ensure that that continuity
- 9:19exists so members don't fall through the cracks.
- 9:22Rachel, it's so fantastic to have you. We
- 9:24covered so many different aspects of this topic
- 9:27today. I wanna thank you for for your
- 9:29time and your insights and turn the floor
- 9:31over to you here too. Is there anything
- 9:32else that that you wanna mention to our
- 9:34audience that we might have not touched on
- 9:35that you think is important?
- 9:37Yeah. I think the last thing I'll mention
- 9:39is innovation in healthcare, which we talk a
- 9:42lot about. We talk about how
- 9:44it's really, in some ways, easy to get
- 9:46caught up in the technology
- 9:48on the tools and platforms
- 9:50and how they integrate and how they solve
- 9:53specific problems, and that's absolutely right, how we
- 9:55can leverage technology to advance
- 9:58health care. But oftentimes, we need to ensure
- 10:00we're not overlooking how critical the provider's role
- 10:03is in making these tools meaningful and helping
- 10:06patients understand and act act on their health.
- 10:09At MD Live, we're focused on innovating technology,
- 10:12but we're still centering our model on the
- 10:14patient provider relationship.
- 10:16So when our providers are empowered with the
- 10:18right tools and data,
- 10:20patients feel more supported, and that's how we
- 10:22ultimately deliver on the promise of personalized and
- 10:24holistic care.
- 10:26Rachel, so great to have you. Thanks for
- 10:27being here. Thanks for having me. Absolutely. And
- 10:30we also want to thank our podcast sponsor,
- 10:32MD Life. You can tune in to more
