- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast.

- 0:08Shape, SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company, and Neuralink,
- 0:13and I'm your host, Will Walden. If you want uninterrupted
- 0:17episodes of the Elon Musk podcast, please go to
- 0:20clubelon.supercast.com to find out how there's a link in the
- 0:26show notes. Elon Musk's ex, previously known
- 0:33as Twitter, is taking a significant step to enhance
- 0:36brand safety for advertisers. Starting in February, the
- 0:39company will offer US advertisers more control over
- 0:42the vertical video ad placements through an expanded partnership
- 0:45with Integral Ad Services. Now this move comes after the
- 0:49platform faced criticism for its content moderation policies and
- 0:52the impact on its ad revenue and brand partnerships.
- 0:56Now, X collaboration with IAS involves classifying all
- 1:00vertical video ad adjacencies to ensure they align with the
- 1:03Global Alliance for Responsible Media Framework, or GARM.
- 1:08The company aims to reassure advertisers that their vertical
- 1:10video ads won't be placed next to harmful or offensive content.
- 1:14Now this effort is a part of X's strategy to rebuild trust with
- 1:18its advertising partners and the company's recent challenges with
- 1:21brand safety and content moderation have led to a
- 1:24significant loss in advertising revenue.
- 1:26Major advertisers have reduced their spending on X and shifted
- 1:30to other social media platforms and XS value has plummeted over
- 1:3371% since Musk's takeover in April of 2022, as estimated by
- 1:39Fidelity. And in an attempt to regain its
- 1:41footing in social media arena and attract advertisers, X is
- 1:45now positioning itself as a video first platform.
- 1:48And the company claims that video content is integral to the
- 1:51majority of user sessions, noting a nearly 30% year over
- 1:54year increase in video views. However, it remains unclear if
- 1:58this includes all video views or average video views.
- 2:02Now vertical video is reportedly the fastest growing feature on X
- 2:05with over 100 million daily viewers and significant user
- 2:09engagement. And despite these claims, there
- 2:11are concerns about the accuracy of these numbers, especially
- 2:14considering the platform's recent changes in content
- 2:16moderation and leadership. X is actively expanding its
- 2:19brand safety and content moderation teams too, which
- 2:23reverses the downsizing trend initiated by Elon Musk in 2022.
- 2:28This expansion aims to address ongoing concerns about the
- 2:31platform's approach to managing harmful content and maintaining
- 2:35a safe environment for advertisers and users alike.
- 2:38And despite these efforts, experts remain skeptical about
- 2:42X's ability to attract advertisers back.
- 2:45The company's recent emphasis on video content, including new
- 2:48formats like immersive video and enhanced video Calling Features,
- 2:52is part of its strategy to become an Everything app.
- 2:55And the platform's claims about user engagement with video
- 2:58content, such as the high rate of video watching in user
- 3:02sessions, are met with skepticism.
- 3:04Analysts and industry experts question the clarity and
- 3:07validity of these statistics, especially given the past
- 3:10discrepancy in data released by Axe and Musk.
- 3:13The expansion of video content on X is also seen as an attempt
- 3:16to win backed advertisers who distance themselves following
- 3:19must controversial actions and his statements.
- 3:22Now this shift in content strategy reflects A broader
- 3:25effort to diversify the platform's appeal and its
- 3:28revenue sources. Now, XS blog post highlighted a
- 3:3222% increase in total ad engagements, suggesting that its
- 3:36efforts to make advertising more relevant and impactful are
- 3:39bearing fruit. However, there's criticism about
- 3:43the decline quality of ads on the platform, with some users
- 3:46noticing an influx of lower quality clickbait type ads.
- 3:49Now, the company has established new partnerships with ad
- 3:52verification and brand safety measurement firms, including
- 3:55Double Verify and IAS, and these collaborations aim to reassure
- 3:59advertisers of the platform's commitment to brand safety
- 4:02following concerns about ads appearing next to inappropriate
- 4:05content. Now there's a bit of report from
- 4:07Media Matters which revealed inconsistencies in XS brand
- 4:11safety measures with ads from major brands appearing next to
- 4:14controversial content, and X challenged these findings and
- 4:17responded with legal action against Media Matters.
- 4:20The company's expanded partnership with IAS is a part
- 4:23of its effort to bolster brand safety, particularly for its
- 4:26growing vertical, video content. Now, despite these initiatives,
- 4:31there's continued skepticism about X's potential gain of lost
- 4:35advertising revenue. And experts highlight that while
- 4:39the focus on video content might appeal to advertisers, the
- 4:42overarching issue related to content moderation and Elon
- 4:45Musk's management style remained deterrent to those advertisers.
- 4:49And industry leaders believe that the root of X's advertising
- 4:52challenges lies in his leadership.
- 4:54Then Musk's actions and statements played a significant
- 4:57role in this. And the platform's struggle to
- 4:59retain and attract advertisers is compounded by the
- 5:01availability of alternative social media platforms like
- 5:04Tiktok, Instagram, Facebook, etcetera, that are all perceived
- 5:08as safer and more reliable by marketers.
- 5:12Now, X's recent efforts to promote its vertical video
- 5:14capabilities are part of a broader strategy to compete
- 5:18directly with popular social media apps like Tiktok.
- 5:21A pitch deck obtained by Ad Age reveals the platform's focus on
- 5:25brand safety tools and efforts to combat misinformation.
- 5:28Alongside initiatives to boost user engagement and AD revenue,
- 5:32the platform claims a significant increase in monthly
- 5:34active users and user engagement, particularly among
- 5:37Gen. Z users.
- 5:39In X's pitch Deck highlights its new immersive media viewer and
- 5:43various features designed to enhance user interaction with
- 5:46video content and attract more advertisers.
- 5:49Now the strategy for the upcoming holiday season, One of
- 5:52their newest strategies includes a focus on major events,
- 5:55cultural movements. Leveraging these to appeal to
- 5:57advertisers, the platform is reportedly offering significant
- 6:01discounts to entice advertisers amidst efforts to broaden its
- 6:04content offerings, including long form video and also live
- 6:07streaming. Advertisers, however, remain
- 6:10cautious about XS brand safety measures, especially given the
- 6:13platform's recent challenges with misinformation and
- 6:16controversial content. X emphasizes its commitment to
- 6:19providing a safe and trusted environment for conversation,
- 6:22advertising, and also content. Hey, thank you so much for
