- 0:11Hello, friends. It's shown here.
- 0:14It is the 12th of February. That's right, the 12th of first
- 0:20thinking. It can't be Valentine's Day yet.
- 0:22No. Still two more days to go.
- 0:24That's right. Talk to your florist.
- 0:25You'll be fine. You'll be fine.
- 0:27Yes, it is the new week. It is a Monday, and this is the
- 0:31week when you and I are going to finish reading through the book
- 0:35of First Samuel. And we are going to get to the
- 0:37end on Thursday before our Sam on Friday.
- 0:40And sadly for Saul, this will not end well for him.
- 0:44It will be his demise as we see how the story plays out.
- 0:48And then of course in the second half of this book in Second
- 0:50Samuel, we will see the rise of David to the throne and on from
- 0:55there. But we are not going to get to
- 0:572nd Samuel for a little while actually, because we will be
- 1:00heading into some New Testament territory with a couple of
- 1:03epistles and then a gospel as we lead up to Easter.
- 1:07But boy, that is still a little ways ahead.
- 1:11Here we are going to finish off the story of First Samuel.
- 1:15So let us put down everything that's coming this month, that's
- 1:20coming this week, that's coming today.
- 1:23Settle ourselves before our God and prepared to hear what he has
- 1:28to say to us today. All right, friends, won't you
- 1:33join me? Let us read First Samuel Chapter
- 1:3628. About that time, the Philistines
- 1:49mustered their armies for another war with Israel, King
- 1:53Akish told David. You and your men will be
- 1:56expected to join me in battle. Very well, David agreed.
- 2:01Now you will see for yourself what we can do then, Akish told
- 2:05David. I will make you my personal
- 2:09bodyguard for life. Meanwhile, Samuel had died and
- 2:13all Israel had mourned for him. He was buried in Rama, his
- 2:18hometown, and Saul had banned from the land of Israel all
- 2:22mediums and those who consult the spirits of the dead.
- 2:27The Philistines set up their camp at Shunem, and Saul
- 2:30gathered all the army of Israel and camped at Gilboa.
- 2:35When Saul saw the vast Philistine army, he became
- 2:38frantic With fear. He asked the Lord what he should
- 2:41do, but the Lord refused to answer him, either by dreams or
- 2:45by sacred lots, or by the prophets.
- 2:49Soul then said to his advisors, Find a woman who is a medium so
- 2:53I can go and ask her what to do. His advisors replied there is a
- 2:59medium at Endor, so Saul disguised himself by wearing
- 3:03ordinary clothing instead of his royal robes.
- 3:06Then he went to the woman's home at night, accompanied by two of
- 3:09his men. I have to talk to a man who has
- 3:12died, he said. Will you call up the spirit for
- 3:15me? Are you trying to get me killed?
- 3:19The woman demanded. You know that Saul has outlawed
- 3:22all the mediums and all who consult the spirits of the dead.
- 3:27Why are you setting a trap for me?
- 3:30But Saul took an oath in the name of the Lord and promised as
- 3:33surely as the Lord lives. Nothing bad will happen to you
- 3:37for doing this, finally, the woman said.
- 3:40Well, whose spirit do you want me to call up?
- 3:45Call up Samuel? Sole replied.
- 3:48When the woman saw Samuel, she screamed.
- 3:51You've deceived me. You are soul.
- 3:54Don't be afraid, the king told her.
- 3:57What do you see? I see a God coming up out of the
- 4:02earth, she said. What does he look like?
- 4:05Saul asked. He is an old man wrapped in a
- 4:09robe, she replied. Saul realised it was Samuel, and
- 4:13he fell to the ground before him.
- 4:16Why have you disturbed me by calling me back, Samuel Assal?
- 4:22Because I'm in deep trouble, soul, replied.
- 4:26The Philistines are at war with me, and God has left me and
- 4:29won't reply by prophets or dreams.
- 4:33So I have called for you to tell me what to do, but Samuel
- 4:37replied, Why ask me? Since the Lord has left you and
- 4:43has become your enemy, the Lord has done just as he said he
- 4:48would. He has torn the Kingdom from you
- 4:51and given it to your rival David.
- 4:53The Lord has done this to you to day, because you refuse to carry
- 4:58out His fierce anger against the Amalekites.
- 5:01What's more, the Lord will hand you and the army of Israel over
- 5:06to the Philistines tomorrow, and you and your sons will be here
- 5:10with me. The Lord will bring down the
- 5:13entire army of Israel in defeat. Soul fell full length on the
- 5:19ground, paralysed with fright because of Samuel's words.
- 5:23He was also faint with hunger, for he had eaten nothing all day
- 5:27and all night when the woman saw how distraught he was, she said.
- 5:32Sir, I obeyed your command. At the risk of my life now, do
- 5:38what I say and let me give you a little something to eat so you
- 5:42can regain your strength for the trip back.
- 5:45But Saul refused to eat anything.
- 5:47Then his advisors joined the woman in urging him to eat.
- 5:51So he finally yielded and got up from the ground and sat on the
- 5:55couch. The woman had been fattening A
- 5:58calf, so she hurried out and killed it.
- 6:01She took some flour, kneaded it into dough, and baked unleavened
- 6:05bread. She brought the meal to Saul and
- 6:07his advisors, and they ate it. Then they went out into the
- 6:13night. Lord, this Bible reading can
- 6:24sound so strange to our modern ears when we read that Saul was
- 6:27so distressed that he did not know your will for his next
- 6:31move. And that crippled him, paralysed
- 6:34him, unable to move forward. And here we are.
- 6:38No, we are not the king of your nation, But we are your people.
- 6:42And each day we live our lives, we make decisions.
- 6:46We do what we believe is the right thing to do.
- 6:50But Lord, I know for myself, and I'm sure all who are praying now
- 6:54that so often we find ourselves just relying on our own
- 6:59intuition, our own ideas, our own logic, our own sense of what
- 7:04should be continue to humble us so that we come to you and we
- 7:10seek your will and thank you that you do not sit on a throne
- 7:15aloof and far away. But you give us your son who has
- 7:19rescued us, and you give us your spirit who resides here in US,
- 7:26that you can prompt us and guide us and lead us.
- 7:29So I just pray for your guidance as we go about our daily lives.
- 7:36Lead us. Show us your heart so that we
- 7:41can know our identity in you, our place in your family, and
- 7:46the way that you would have us live our lives.
- 7:49We just offer ourselves to you, Jesus.
- 7:53We want to do your work and follow your will, So we lift you
- 7:59up. We praise you and we pray all of
- 8:01this in your name. Amen.
